From New Era to New Deal: Herbert Hoover, the Economists, and American Economic Policy, 1921-1933 (Historical Perspectives on Modern Economics)

From New Era to New Deal: Herbert Hoover, the Economists, and American Economic Policy, 1921-1933 (Historical Perspectives on Modern Economics)
William J. Barber | 1989-01-27 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 252 | Economics
In popular imagery, Herbert Hoover is often stereotyped as a 'do-nothing' president who offered only nineteenth-century slogans for the greatest economic catastrophe in twentieth-century American history. Nothing could be further from the truth. This study examines the properties of an innovative approach to economic growth and stability formulated by Hoover and his associates during his years as secretary of commerce (1921-9) and inspects his deployment of this strategy from the White House following the Great Crash in the autumn of 1929. Attention is then focused on Hoover's attempts to reformulate his macro-economic programme as the depression deepened in late 1931 and 1932. Archival materials provide arresting insights into Hoover's aspirations for a new institution - the Reconstruction Finance Corporations - as a vehicle for stimulating investment through a novel form of 'off-budget' financing. To complement the discussion of Hoover's theories of economic policy in their various manifestations, the views of contemporary economists on problems of the day are surveyed.

The Man-Eating Tigers of Sundarbans

The Man-Eating Tigers of Sundarbans
Sy Montgomery | 2001-02-26 00:00:00 | Houghton Mifflin Books for Children | 64 | Animals
Along the Bay of Bengal between India and Bangladesh stretches a strange and beautiful flooded forest. This enchanted forest is called the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve and is home to more tigers than anywhere else on earth. There are said to be some five hundred tigers here. Nowhere else do tigers live in a mangrove swamp. And nowhere else do healthy tigers routinely hunt people. Yet about three hundred people are killed each year by the tigers of Sundarbans. No one knows why. The Man-Eating Tigers of Sundarbans is a mystery story, but it is also a story about science and myth, about people and tigers, and about different ways of seeing the natural world. Sy Montgomery traveled to Sundarbans searching for answers to the mysteries surrounding these tigers. She listened to what scientists had to say about the unusual tiger behavior and to the stories of the villagers who revere the very animals who hunt them.
Reviews
I have already read (and eventually bought )"Spell of the Tiger" also by Sy Montgomery, and notice she wrote this one with illustrations for young people. When I (age 71!) began to read it, it was like a ride on the boat and a walk in the Sunderbans itself. Sy certainly would enthrall a young reader. She describes the Sunderbans and the men and women who live daily with danger. She tells how the people do not hate, though they fear, the tiger, whom they honor as a god. Without the tiger, the forest would not exist. They believe the tiger is protector of the forest, and he is. I highly recommend the book and hope it is a success. The illustrations are beautiful, depicting the Bangladeshi and Indian peoples in a respectful and loving way, especially Girindra and Rathin and their wives.
Reviews
an author whose personal agenda raises questions about the credibility of victims and their family-members, often the source of her information. Nothing new..seen on National Geographic and numerous other T.V. programs..Sorry I wasted my money..
Reviews
I feel sympathetic to the author. There was a lot of work placed in this book. Unfortunately for the purchaser or reader there is no story here. I bought this book and read it cover to cover. This book may be of peripheral interest only to those in academia who are wildlife experts or interested in minutiae regarding Bangladesh.

This book holds nothing for a wildlife "enthusiast" who keeps tuning the pages hoping for something of interest to occur before the last page. It dosen't. Not even on the last page.

For those who are interested in fascinating stories of tiger behavior, maneaters or India in the years between 1920 to WWII; the books by Jim Corbett are touchingly tragic, human, tense, humorous and fascinating Vinjets (Spelling?).....short stories, which fill each book and will be re read by the owners of the book every few years for life.

Reviews
This is a high quality non-fiction book. A portion of it was used on the MCAS ELA test. My class has voted to highly recommend this book!
Reviews
I love Tigers and everything about it. About this book, I was surprised to read it in less than an hour, it looks like a very short book or a phamphlet. The content it is ok but the title suggest information and documentation on man eaters, but instead is a shallow review of the general situation. I love sundarbans but no recommend this book.

Reelin Glycoprotein: Structure, Biology and Roles in Health and Disease

Reelin Glycoprotein: Structure, Biology and Roles in Health and Disease
S.H. Fatemi | 2008-06-13 00:00:00 | Springer | 444 | Internal Medicine

Reelin glycoprotein is a serine protease with important roles in embryogenesis and during adult life. Reelin mutations or deficiency of the protein product could cause abnormal cortical development and reelin signaling impairment in brain. Reelin abnormalities in several neurospychiatric disorders, such as autism, schizophrenia, mood disorders and lissencephaly, may provide mechanistic explanations for etiologies of these disorders. There is also emerging data indicating the feasibility of using various medications (valproic acid, olanzapine) to increase mRNA/protein levels for reelin and/or gene therapy to prevent or treat reelin deficiencies observed in the above-mentioned disorders.

This comprehensive and integrative book examines the role that reelin plays in the etiology of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia and autism.

Evaluating Theories Of Language: Evidence From Disordered Communication

Evaluating Theories Of Language: Evidence From Disordered Communication
Barbara Dodd,Ruth Campbell,Linda Worrall | 1996-11-30 00:00:00 | Whurr Publishers, Ltd. | 250 | Entertainment
One approach to the study of language has been to describe people whose ability to communicate is impaired. Some researchers have argued that it is possible to identify the component mental processes that contribute to the ability to communicate by describing the ways in which language can break down. Other researchers have expressed doubts about the extent to which data from impairment reflects normal language function. This volume reflects the problems of constructing theory of how the normal brain deals with language from data from impaired individuals from the perspective of a range of disciplines: psycholinguistics, linguistics, neurophysiology and speech-language pathology. The chapters include critiques of methodology; application of new technology; the study of bilingual people; and cross-linguistic studies. A range of language skills is discussed (phonology, prosody, syntax, semantics, reading and spelling) in the context of both developmental and acquired impairments (hearing loss, cerebellar dysarthria, sub-cortical aphasia, cortical aphasia, phonological disorder, and dyslexia). This book icludes contributions from researchers and clinicians on both sides of the Atlantic as well as from Australia and Hong Kong.

Transport in Nanostructures, Second Edition

Transport in Nanostructures, Second Edition
Stephen M. Goodnick, Jonathan Bird | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 670 | Physics
The advent of semiconductor structures whose characteristic dimensions are smaller than the mean free path of carriers has led to the development of novel devices, and advances in theoretical understanding of mesoscopic systems or nanostructures. This book has been thoroughly revised and provides a much-needed update on the very latest experimental research into mesoscopic devices and develops a detailed theoretical framework for understanding their behaviour. Beginning with the key observable phenomena in nanostructures, the authors describe quantum confined systems, transmission in nanostructures, quantum dots, and single electron phenomena. Separate chapters are devoted to interference in diffusive transport, temperature decay of fluctuations, and non-equilibrium transport and nanodevices. Throughout the book, the authors interweave experimental results with the appropriate theoretical formalism. The book will be of great interest to graduate students taking courses in mesoscopic physics or nanoelectronics, and researchers working on semiconductor nanostructures.

Color Atlas Of Forensic Pathology

Color Atlas Of Forensic Pathology
Jay Dix | 1999-01-01 00:00:00 | CRC; 1 edition | 192 | Medicine
A male homicide victim with a shotgun blast to the chest. A female drug addict who has overdosed on crack cocaine. An elderly woman with deep stab wounds to the neck. A two-year-old motor vehicle accident victim with blunt head trauma. For forensic pathologists, police detectives, and crime scene investigators, dealing with death and injury is a daily routine. But even after investigating thousands of drownings, shootings, stabbings, electrocutions, overdoses, and traffic accidents, most professionals in the investigative fields still haven't seen it all. Originally published on CD-ROM, the Color Atlas of Forensic Pathology addresses much of the basic information which forensic pathologists and other investigators deal with on a day to day basis. Packed with 780 full-color, captioned photographs, this atlas examines everything from time of death and decomposition, to identification, to causes of death from blunt trauma, firearm injuries, asphyxia, cutting and stabbing injuries, and more. The atlas shows the various causes of death and injury with case -- "visuals" to help investigators understand the work they perform. Indeed, with its exhaustive coverage, the Color Atlas of Forensic Pathology will provide investigators with valuable insight into the many different causes of death and injury they must deal with and how the manners of death are diagnosed.

Mystic Cults in Magna Graecia

Mystic Cults in Magna Graecia
Giovanni Casadio,Patricia A. Johnston | 2009-09-01 00:00:00 | University of Texas Press | 390 | Greece
In Vergil's Aeneid, the poet implies that those who have been initiated into mystery cults enjoy a blessed situation both in life and after death. This collection of essays brings new insight to the study of mystic cults in the ancient world, particularly those that flourished in Magna Graecia (essentially the area of present-day Southern Italy and Sicily). Implementing a variety of methodologies, the contributors to Mystic Cults in Magna Graecia examine an array of features associated with such "mystery religions" that were concerned with individual salvation through initiation and hidden knowledge rather than civic cults directed toward Olympian deities usually associated with Greek religion. Contributors present contemporary theories of ancient religion, field reports from recent archaeological work, and other frameworks for exploring mystic cults in general and individual deities specifically, with observations about cultural interactions throughout. Topics include Dionysos and Orpheus, the Goddess Cults, Isis in Italy, and Roman Mithras, explored by an international array of scholars including Giulia Sfameni Gasparro ("Aspects of the Cult of Demeter in Magna Graecia") and Alberto Bernabé ("Imago Inferorum Orphica"). The resulting volume illuminates this often misunderstood range of religious phenomena.

Mormon founder Joseph Smith is one of the most controversial figures of nineteenth-century American history, and a virtually inexhaustible subject for analysis. In this volume, fifteen scholars offer essays on how to interpret and understand Smith and his legacy. Including essays by both Mormons and non-Mormons, this wide-ranging collection is the only available survey of contemporary scholarly opinion on the extraordinary man who started one of the fastest growing religious traditions in the modern world.
Reviews
Interesting to note chapters by LDS and non-LDS scholars looking at the contributions of a long awaited 19th century prophet. With so much incorrect 'information' placed by those who profess to be Christian but display nothing but hate and ignorance, it is good to have a scholarly work such as this.

This Book Does What it Claims
This book was written for the non-technical professional who either wants or needs to learn about data warehousing. The book will give her the basics of data warehousing in a step by step fashion, describing what's involved in creating a data warehouse and how you deliver the data when it's needed. That's a mouthful. The book wasn't easy for me to go through, but I believe it does what it claims. I do now have a grasp of what data warehousing all about and most importantly I've learned what I needed to know, that it's not a field for me. Had it not been for this book I might have spent endless hours learning the field, only to find out it would have been work that I wouldn't have been happy doing. Thanks to this book I've reconsidered two classes I was going to take, so it deserves five stars, because it's really been a benefit to me.

User review
Dry as dust, but has useful information
Data (information) is the base of all organizations, from small to large. Organizing data is a challenge and always has been. What has changed is that the technology now allows not only for the accumulation of more data, but makes keeping it easier and less expensive. Government regulations, insurance requirements and other factors make it mandatory to retain some information for varying periods while some information is best disposed of as quickly as possible to avoid or mitigate legal liability. People working on the tech side of the organization usually know little of the present or potential value of the data they are responsible for managing, while manager typically know little of how the technology might make delivery of vital information more efficient and put the information into easily usable form.

Enter the `data warehouse`. Not long ago, it was a buzzword, but as the hype died down, some people truly got the idea of what a data warehouse is and how it can be used. Author Laura Reeves appears to be one of them. In one of the clearest sentences in her book, she says `the purpose and characteristics of a data warehousing environment are to provide data in a format easily understood by the business community in order to support decision-making processes. The data warehouse supports looking at the business data over time to identify significant trends in buying behavior, customer retention, or changes in employee productivity.`

The dry as dust tone of the above carries through the entire book. It is eye-wearying stuff, but much of the information Reeves conveys will be useful for the non-technical business manager trying to get a grasp of the data warehouse concept. A lot of it is also hooey, such as the fake case histories with lines like this classic: `The project tea members all work hard to keep the project moving forward in a timely manner, and often this happens without the direct intervention from the sponsor.` This corporate silly talk takes up way too much space: this book could easily have been two-thirds the size without surrendering any vital information.

Overall, Reeves stays in descriptive mode, describing how a model project might flow, how appropriate information might be collected and so on. There is very little specificity within these more than 400 pages. On the other hand, business managers typically don't prosper in the detail rich environment a technical person demands.

My impression is that this is information presented in a manner executives seek out at seminars presented at 5-star resorts billed as training sessions.

This is a good book, in general, for people who need to comprehend from a level of zero practical knowledge what data warehousing is about. The more intelligent reader may find Reeves' presentation irritating. It is bone-dry and presumes the reader has little intelligence. But the book does provide useful information on the subject and that is what counts in the final analysis.

Non-Technical Guide
The target audience is the non-technical manger who has identified a potential benefit to consolidating corporate data and needs to understand the risks, cost and benefits more fully. It covers the various roles and responsibilities for the project and the operational differences between an OLTP and DW requirements. It would have useful to have more discussion of dynamic provisioning, data retention and archiving.

User review
non-trivial
One take home message emphasised by the book is that data warehousing is not cheap and not easy to implement. Why so is explained at length in the text. A key idea is that your company has to invest many resources, not least in educating key people in the organisation. The book is written for a non-technical manager, who probably has to supervise technical IT personnel.

Chapter 7, on modelling of data, is rudimentary. A person from a database background would find the discussion trivial. It is more so that the manager can try a top level modelling of a business situation for herself. Where this is then passed to her technical staff for a more detailed exposition. Another scenario is to get enough background about the ideas of making models so that she can understand those pushed up to her from the staff.

Business intelligence is covered here in generalities. One slightly frustrating aspect is that if you want some specific details about a non-trivial case, that the book never quite puts these forth. This is not confined to this book. It appears that involved real world cases of BI might be still held tightly inside companies; no one is willing to expose a case study for everyone else to study.

Chapter 3 has a table of vendors that can provide different parts of an inventory software application. SAS and Informatica are 2 such vendors. Useful if you need to delve further into actual commercial offerings.

Good but,,.
I bought this book after reading chapter 1.

Both chapter 1 - 3 are good readings but the remaining chapters are not fantastic.

I have read the entire Wiley-Ralph Kimball series, perhaps that's why I feel that the content of the book is diluted.

Mars (Space!)

Mars (Space!)
George Capaccio | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Benchmark Books | 64 | Astronomy and Cosmology
This intriguing series takes at our universe and the planets, stars, etc. that are part of it.

After discussing the formation of our solar system, author Capaccio compares Earth and Mars, the planet most like our own. Often called the "Red Planet," Mars was associated by ancient peoples with war and violence, and named for the Roman god of war. By the 1500s, Tycho Brahe had collected extensive data about Mars, from which Kepler noted its elliptical orbit. In the eighteenth century, William Herschel used telescopes to calculate Mars's tilted axis and to chart the planet's features. Mars has always been a focus for creative speculation; young astronomers will enjoy the section describing fantastic notions ranging from creature-built canals to a Martian invasion of Earth. Using space probes and rovers, scientists have now made new discoveries, engendering even more fantastic speculation. Were there once floods on Mars? Could there be minute microorganisms there? Can humans expect some day to live on Mars? The author reveals that NASA is planning to land astronauts on Mars sometime in the future, though much expensive research and engineering will need to take place before human life can be transported to and survive on this intriguing planet. Vivid illustrations, a fact page, a glossary, and bibliographies enhance the often fascinating text, making Mars attractive to space explorers at varying levels of sophistication

The most clinical and diagnostic of the major works in Occupational & Environmental Medicine. The text includes all the usual (and necessary) approaches to cover this topic: - disease by organ system - disease by chemical / physical cause - disease by industry / business sector

Includes necessary components on ethics and advocacy. Not as program-focussed as other works which seem designed to support medical directors more than diagnostic clinicians.

Globalization and Its Outcomes

Globalization and Its Outcomes
John O'Loughlin,Lynn Staeheli,Edward Greenberg | 2004-06-14 00:00:00 | The Guilford Press | 404 | Economics
Balanced, authoritative, and up to date, this volume examines the profound effects of economic globalization on the well-being of individuals and communities in both developed and less-developed societies. Using a variety of research methods and conceptual tools, leading experts from a range of disciplines trace the complex interactions of globalization with social, political, and health and welfare processes around the world. Compelling findings are presented on "winners" and "losers" across national boundaries, regions, class and ethnic divisions, gender, and age; the ways in which different groups have mobilized to respond to globalization's challenges; and the important policy questions raised. Also considered is the crucial question of whether globalization can adequately be addressed from the perspective of contemporary social scientific theory, or whether it requires a new paradigm for analysis.Balanced, authoritative, and up to date, this volume examines the profound effects of economic globalization on the well-being of individuals and communities in both developed and less-developed societies. Computer Graphics, C Version (2nd Edition)

Computer Graphics, C Version (2nd Edition)
| 1969-12-31 00:00:00 | | 0 | Computer Science

This timely new version of a popular computer graphics book features the C language in programming examples to demonstrate the implementation of graphics application. These well-known authors assume no prior knowledge of computer graphics when presenting the basic principles for the design, use, and understanding of computer graphics systems. However, some knowledge of C programming is assumed as the reader learns how to use algorithms for creating and manipulating graphics displays.

User review
Introduction to Graphics Theory
I bought this book long ago and I have used it more than any other book I own. This book covers the basics of graphics theory. The book assumes some mathematical knowledge (linear algebra), but provides a solid review in the appendix. Beginning graphics student often worry about the technical details of their particular platform (how to put a pixel), and this book doesn't cover those issues; you'll need an OpenGL guide and a C book for that. Hearn and Baker write far more lucid prose than most academics.

User review
Concepts need more explanation
The book is very accurate but tries to explain everything mathematically. First you need to make clear what you need to do and then things can be formalized to equations. But in this book you give the equations a run with your own imaginary numbers and than you understand the concept. If you are willing to work out things on paper with your imagination and the details given in the book you will understand the book but that is very time consuming and of course after all that you will not give the book its due credit.
Otherwise a good book. Accurate and to the point.

User review
Needed more C code
The 3-D concepts aren't explained well. And yes, C code's sure lacking. I will give it 4 stars, because of the good explanations that accompany the 2-D chapters.
I would have given it 5 stars had it featured more sample code (and yes, well documented too), and had the 3-D sections been more lucidly explained.

User review
Seems a bit outdated.
This book is in sore need of an update! Much of the pictures and info is from the early 90's and has changed quite a bit. However, the parts describing the non-changing algorithms seem fairly well written.

User review
Excellent!
Let's face it, learning 3D graphics takes effort. I have read most of Hill(falls short of the mark) and all of both of Angel's books (excellent for OpenGL). Hearn and Baker do an excellent job of explaining difficult 3D concepts. The examples are clear, the C code is very useful, and the diagrams are most helpful. The book is well-written, concise, and thorough. Compared to other books, this one does not gloss over details,,. yes, effort is required, but the explanations are as straightforward in this book as you will find anywhere. I get lost in Foley, there's just too much detail. I get lost in Hill, as he touches on scores of `thoughts` and ends up losing sight of the basic concepts. Hearn and Baker just get right down to the business of teaching and explaining a conceptually tough subject, thoroughly, succinctly, and completely. No, they are not going to make you a graphics programmer without effort on your part, but no one will. This book is the best I've seen for achieving an understanding of the basics. If you're doing OpenGL, combine Hearn and Baker with Angel's books and you'll be off and running.
I wish I could give this one 8 stars!

While I've only begun reading this book, it is very informative and well written. Additionally, I entered a typo in my mailing address, which caused some confusion and inconvenience. The author exchanged emails with me, and had the book shipped out immediately. Great purchase for any one interested in understanding the dynamics of motorcycles.

Foot and ankle in rheumatoid arthritis

Foot and ankle in rheumatoid arthritis
Maurice Bouysset, Yves Tourne, Karl Tillmann | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 251 | Medicine
One of the earliest signs of rheumatoid arthritis may be pain in the foot. However, this part of the body is very often neglected during clinical assessment of the illness in favour of the articulations of the upper limbs, knees and hips. Nevertheless, it appears evident that a detailed clinical examination of the forefoot, ankle and heel could be useful in order to get closer to a rheumatological diagnosis. Thanks to blood tests and conventional imaging, completed with a scanner or MRI if needed, every doctor should be in a position to detect the beginning of rheumatoid arthritis in the foot or ankle.

Gulliver's Travels (Collector's Library)

Gulliver's Travels (Collector's Library)
Jonathan Swift | 2011-03-01 00:00:00 | Collector's Library | 408 | Classics
Jonathan Swift's masterpiece is the finest satire in the English language. Shipwrecked traveller Lemuel Gulliver finds himself washed ashore in Lilliput, a kingdom populated by tiny people. Fascinated by their exotic visitor, the Lilliputians enlist Gulliver's services in their bitter civil war. But Gulliver becomes the object of a court intrigue and has to make a hasty escape. On his next voyage, his ship is blown off course to Brobdingnag, whose giant inhabitants strike him as horrific and occasionally revolting. A third journey takes him to Laputa, a floating island occupied by pedantic scientists and philosophers. Finally, he encounters a society of rational horses, the Houyhnhnms, and witnesses the appalling behaviour of their servants the Yahoos, a group who are in many ways disturbingly similar to Man at his most bestial. Swift's brilliantly original story is a timeless portrait of the human condition in all its misery and majesty.

Reviews
This book is a masterpiece. I picked up an old dusty copy of this title at a book fair just so I could have this classic on my shelf. I was just out of college and not too interested in reading anything too boring and heavy. I figured I would scan through it just so I would be able to to say I read it and talk about it a little. What a surprise when I started reading- I couldn't put it down!

It was the original version with the addition of footnotes that explained the political climate and other relevant facts of the day. I strongly suggest that you obtain a version with this information as without it you are missing 3/4 of the reading experience. I actually read the whole book twice just to try and pick up the funny, quirky things I might have missed. There are just so many levels to this book. On the surface it is a book about a man and his travels to strange faraway places. Underneath it is a scathing, comical, statement on the state of society and the movers and shakers of the day. I did not know that Jonathan Swift was a comic genius, but this is a fact you cannot miss if you read this book understanding the social satire weaved throught its chapters. I actually would find myself laughing out loud and being overcome with awe at the complexity of the humor the author was able to conjure.
Reviews
It is difficult to review a "classic" novel given the weight of history and the number of reviews already written. However, this is an enjoyable adventure with very imaginative settings.

I agree with earlier reviews that the first 2 voyages are the more interesting, or at least not so laden with political messages. The later two are more interesting ideas for alternative fantasy settings but are bogged down by too much preaching.

There is a gem in here for Studio Ghibli fans, the third voyage was inspiration for a popular Ghibli movie.
Reviews
My first experience of Gulliver's Travels was when I was about 7 or 8. My father had been a part of this subscription service from some publisher (I think it's the Franklin Library) called the "100 Greatest Books of All Time." The edition he had was heavy with gilded pages and was something that seemed like one of those medieval illuminated manuscripts. Each few pages had a beautiful, colored illustration of Gulliver struggling.

Before I'd go to bed, he'd sit by my dresser on his wooden chair with a glass of water--at least that's what I thought it was--on his knee, and I'd be wrapped in a blanket with my back to the head of my bed frame. When he started reading, his posture would straighten out and he'd hold the gold hardback up to his eyes with one hand, the glass of "water" held in the other. Every few page turns, he'd sip at the glass and inhale sharply as if he were washing down what he had read. I remember hearing his voice bellow above the reading lamp in a kind of dark monotone. It wasn't like when he read My Father's Dragon or Wonderland. He would describe Gulliver trapped and tied down, and I remember feeling guilty for laughing. The most he would do is invisibly smile in the shadow of the lamplight and snicker.

My father died this past summer. About a month after the funeral, I was walking through Border's trying to figure out what books I wanted my students to read (I just started a teaching apprenticeship at a local high school), and I ended up finding this edition. The good thing about it is that the price is so cheap.

Upon rereading it this past summer, I suddenly realized what Swift and my Father saw in the text. This was by no means simply a children's book or even a "misanthropic" novel, but instead, Gulliver's Travels maps perfectly the lifespan of a human being. This novel is clearly a bildungsroman. This occurred to me when I realized that the reader's concept of the author "Gulliver" is a result of his travels. Each world he visits, he is at first considered an outsider and then becomes, somewhat, a part of the society. Gulliver is an amorphous narrator; he exists only through these worlds and therefore, grows with the text. He is not just a passive observer to these magical places, but the context of his visits shapes him, the narrator, as much as it does change the reader.

How he is seen is through the context in which he is put. The Lilliputians are, obviously, a symbol for childhood. Brobbindang is pubescence as in this section, Gulliver sees the ugliness of the human form. The things that were cute in childhood now are these frightening forms. The last world Gulliver visits is a reference to the cynicism of old age. He sees humanity for what it is, a bunch of Yahoos. With this key in mind, you can clearly see how Gulliver's Travels is not misanthropic but an acceptance and analysis of the "human life cycle." We all go through these stages during our life, just like how we go through them while reading the text. My father helped me realize this. When he read this novel to me as a child, he was teaching me what to expect from this world.

However, this edition is worth "four stars" because the book is fairly cheap and feels like it will fall apart at any second. It feels as if there is no weight to it and is poorly constructed. Pages would be ripped out as they were turned. My father's stable, gold hardback edition was sold in a garage sale for a few cents four years ago. It's sad to say i don't think you can read it like that hardback tomb anymore.
Reviews
I purchased this book in Kindle form in order to use it as a reference book for a research paper regarding Swift & Gulliver;s Travels. I thought it would be easier than using the Google Books version, since it would be at my disposal regardless of being online or not. Imagine my surprise when I opened the book & it was the exact same book I already have, Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift & NOT Gulliver's Travels (Case Studies in Contemporary Criticism) by Swift & Christopher Fox. Kindle didn't even pick it up as the same book, but when I clicked on this new book, it actually opened up to the place I had bookmarked in my previously purchased "Gulliver" book. I do NOT need two exact copies of the same book!!! Bad Amazon!!!
Reviews
What a good story. If you remove the fairy tale element and actually listen to the political and ethical issues raised in the commentary, it really hits home. Well worth the time to read.

Fantasy City: Pleasure and Profit in the Postmodern Metropolis

Fantasy City: Pleasure and Profit in the Postmodern Metropolis
John Hannigan | 1998-11-10 00:00:00 | Routledge | 256 | Social Sciences
Following a wave of de-industrialization and cutbacks in public spending, American downtowns are reinventing themselves in the image of Disneyland and Las Vegas. Fantasy City looks at the changing face of the city and what it means for its citizens and for the future of urban development.

America's central cities more and more begin to resemble theme parks. While this appears to have brought a new energy and hope to the urban landscape, it has yet to deliver an economic miracle to the surrounding residents and merchants. Local communities struggle to maintain their distinctiveness even as they embrace the commercial fantasies offered by global entertainment companies. John A. Hannigan shows how the growth of the fantasy city reflects an ongoing search for risk-free mass entertainment by middle-class consumers.

By discussing examples from a wide variety of venues, including casinos, malls, heritage developments and theme parks, Hannigan traces the rise of urban entertainment at the beginning of this century, its decline after World War II to its surprising renaissance in the 1980s and 1990s. He offers provocative insights into urban development from structuralist, cultural and constructionist perspectives. By drawing on extensive material from business, cultural studies and urban planning, he shows that the growth of the fantasy city signals not only the arrival of a new urban space, but also the eventual destruction of the "inner city".

User review
This is more of a cookbook
This book is good, but it is more of a cookbook approach to CSS than a learn from scratch approach. If you don't already know CSS and have had enough experience playing with it, this book may not provide the best starting point.

The language and flow of the book is great and it is very readable. Some of the CSS ideas presented on images, flash replacement of text are good and the authors build them up from simple versions to complete ones which is really nice.

User review
Great Examples
This is probably the best CSS book I've ever seen. It's got lots of interesting and creative ways to use CSS. It's more for experienced users than for people unfamiliar with style sheets. My only knock on it is that it only gives you the CSS, and sometimes assumes that the reader knows the HTML needed to make use of the styles.

But the examples the book uses are inventive and unlike any I've seen in other books. This book shows you how the page should look, explains why, and gives you the code.

It's pretty easy to understand and has a lot of visuals to help explain concepts.

User review
Excellent Manual for Modern CSS
This is a most excellent and timely book of CSS examples that can be put to quick and good use. Though the book is a couple of years old at this point, it is a great way for a semi-experienced HTML designer or developer to jump in and produce some really good content with CSS. There are loads of code snippets that can be implemented right away.

The book is broken up into sections like Images, Navigation and Forms making it easy for the reader to locate what he or she is after. There is a whole section on Rounded Corners which is definitely worth a look. Overall I really enjoy Sitepoint's formatting of their books -- this one included -- which makes it easy to pick out what I'm look for quickly.

I've been writing CSS since 1997, and I'm always looking for new ideas and tricks. I found a couple in this book -- you just never know what's going to spark your creativity.

This is a particularly good book to pick up if you've been exposed to CSS and now want to put it into use and be really creative with it.

User review
Great value - probably too short
I really like this book. It is EXACTLY what I seek in a design/development book. I want examples, code and explanation. Nothing more.

I've been doing this stuff for 7 years, so much of this wasn't particularly new to me, but the value is in seeing what experts think (and why) and then taking what you want from it. No cruft; just good solutions.

My only gripe is that it could be considerably longer. The book covers 7 topics really well. I'd like at least 10 more, please. I'm sure this is the most common complaint. Additionally, I could do without the fancy book layout design, but I guess it doesn't hurt.

Definite value here. It's next to my desk all the time and I use almost all of their techniques in my projects. It's disappointing that more publishers don't create this kind of book.

User review
Very short, disappointing
I think there are many books that cover this ground a lot better and cheaper as well. Friends of Ed actually has a couple that I would recommend before this. And most certainly Bulletproof Web Design by Cederholm.

This book is really light on details and light on content. It's not at all worth its price, and it's only covering the very basics in a small number of areas. This is definitely not one of the first books you should be looking at about CSS.

Applied Nanotechnology (Micro and Nano Technologies)

Applied Nanotechnology (Micro and Nano Technologies)
Jeremy Ramsden | 2009-09-08 00:00:00 | William Andrew | 250 | Electrical Engineering
This book joins, for the first time, technical nanotechnology information with the non-technical to explain the fundamentals — with an emphasis on a succinct set of principles.

It takes a "first principles" look at the economics of converting research results to products, highly important due to the potentially disruptive nature ofnanotechnology.

How nanotechnology builds on earlier technologies is shown while introducing its own unique paradoxes. The book surveys what has actually been realized, comparing laboratory achievements with commercially successful products, and offers a profound, clear analysis of industrial impacts and current applications.

Forget You Had a Daughter: Doing Time in the 'Bangkok Hilton'

Forget You Had a Daughter: Doing Time in the 'Bangkok Hilton'
Sandra Gregory,Michael Tierney | 2003-01-01 00:00:00 | Vision | 280 | Memoirs

Following two years of living abroad in Thailand, Sandra Gregory suddenly became desperately ill and as her medical bills began to mount, her bank account dwindled. In exchange for $2,000 she agreed to carry 89 grams of heroin to Tokyo for a friend, but before she even boarded the plane she was caught by Bangkok Airport security and ultimately sentenced to 25 years inside the infamous Lard Yao prison. In this shocking account, Sandra details the four and a half years she spent in Thai prison and describes scenes of horrific brutality and suffering. She tells of her daily fight for survival, of the many women who died with no medical care or loved ones around them, and of her acceptance of her guilt and ultimate redemption. Amidst the pain and torture, this honest recollection shows how Sandra fought for survival, and prevailed.

Reviews
Read this book in two days, only because I had to work! Made both my daughters read it, just in case!
Reviews
I just finished reading "Forget You Had a Daughter" by Sandra Gregory and I found it to be one scary book. Young people take a lot of chances and this young lady took one too - big mistake. She should have just called home and asked her parents for money. That's what parents are there for (I'm a parent, and I know!). I enjoyed the book immensely and felt badly for the author who lost a lot of years in her young life to prison. Glad that she's doing well now and has moved on! On a lighter note, my daughter walked past the book on my dresser and was very hurt to think that I would read a book about trying to forget that I had her. I had to explain the title to her and I also had to interject a life lesson about the potential dangers of traveling abroad with drugs. I think she was sorry she brought the whole subject up!
Reviews
I felt the gamut of emotions when I read this book. I felt there weren't enough words described by the author for her reason to smuggle the drugs in the first place.

She described how she needed the money, but what were the underlying real reasons she would put herself through such risk? I never felt satisfied with her answer. I kept wondering how anyone would risk being jailed abroad--maybe a combination of youthful naivete' and extreme risk taking?

Her account of her prison time was heart breaking and difficult to read, at times. She is truly a survivor.

Reviews
I saw her story on National Geographic's "Locked Up Abroad" and did a google search the next day to learn more about her story. I found she had written a memoir and ordered the book. I read it within 24 hours - it was very interesting and as the others mention, feel it should be required reading by students before travelling abroad. I myself am naive in assuming the best in people and probably could have easily found myself in her shoes had I travelled that early in my life.
Reviews
Sandra Gregory takes us deep inside life in a Thailand women's prison and then into the Durham prison of England. Life was terrible for this woman who was arrested for drug trafficking a very small amount of heroin in her vagina. She truly did not deserve such a long and harrowing sentence. She is a hero in my opinion for having survived such an incredibly soul-destroying incarceration. God bless Sandy for writing such a critically-needed memoir. Her book should be on everybody's required reading list, especially high school and college-age kids. They could benefit from Sandy's horrible experience, and might be deterred from doing the same. Thank God she finally got released, but how terrible was her suffering in the mean time! A truly sad but unforgettable read.
