High Resolution X-Ray Diffractometry And Topography

High Resolution X-Ray Diffractometry And Topography
D.K. Bowen,Brian K. Tanner | 1998-02-05 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 264 | Engineering
The application of electronic materials has created a demand for reliable techniques for examining these materials. This book looks at the area of x-ray diffraction and the modern techniques available for deployment in research.
Reviews
This is a new generation book. Most books available in the field cover the whole history of the X-ray scattering theories and applications. Then, specific applications that are very important in our days for industries and scientific researches are not properly treated. This book does begin where other related books have finished. The issues covered are not found anywhere else together, in a same volume, as they are here. It is fundamental to the new era of materials characterization.

Conflict Across Cultures: A Unique Experience of Bridging Differences

Conflict Across Cultures: A Unique Experience of Bridging Differences
Michelle LeBaron,Venashri Pillay | 2006-10-02 00:00:00 | Intercultural Press | 224 | Negotiating
Cultural differences among members of a group, be it a multinational business team or a multinational family, are frequently the source of misunderstanding and conflict. Using stories from a variety of cultures to illustrate techniques for resolving or at least reducing culture-inspired conflicts, LeBaron, Pillay and contributors from around the globe demystify the intricate and important relationships between conflict and culture. The authors describe processes and identify the tools and skills that make for successful conflict resolution. The stories, which are at the heart of the book, are from a variety of cultures and geogaphic locations and have application for groups in all kinds of settings: business, law, social services, government, non-governmental agencies, academia, even families.
Reviews
I would concur with the other reviewer that this a great book for college students exploring intercultural conflict. One of the contributors, Tatsushi Arai, was a professor of mine and we used this book in class. Take time to research professor Arai as he is an amazing practioner and true leader in conflict transformation in the field. This book is a great book to read along with Liisa Malkki's "Purity in Exile". Also, read Vamik Volcan for further depth of the intergenerational psychological root components of conflict. This book is an edited work so each piece stands a little bit on its own yet they are all woven together by a group of authors that took great effort to make a cohesive work.
Reviews
On April 29, 1992, a California jury acquitted four Los Angeles police officers of using excessive force against Rodney King, an African-American motorist whom they had severely beaten after a high-speed car chase. The beating had been caught on camera and televised. The not-guilty verdict sparked four days of massive rioting by blacks in Los Angeles. To help quell the mayhem, King appealed for public order by asking, "Can we all get along?" Unfortunately, "getting along" is never easy, particularly when cultures come into conflict, as embodied by the white law enforcement officers and the black driver. Considering the number of such seemingly intractable conflicts around the world, many contend that they simply cannot be resolved. This book claims otherwise, at least for smaller-scale disagreements where members of different cultures can sit down with each other to iron things out. Michelle LeBaron and Venashri Pillay explain the potential of "building relationships" as a solution to conflict. They focus on using knowledge and understanding to bridge cultural chasms, and report on international studies and case histories. They also explain the psychology of conflict and cultural assumptions. We applaud the authors for their insightful analysis and intelligent approach, and recommend this book to human resource managers and others who work with employees from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
Reviews
CONFLICT ACROSS CULTURES: A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE OF BRIDGING DIFFERENCES comes from modern conflict resolution scholars from Canada, South Africa, Japan and the U.S. who describe the latest concepts and framework for successful conflict resolution. With these new techniques in hand comes new understanding of the roots of cultural conflicts, exposed in a series of stories which come from a range of groups and locales. College-level students of international studies will find this perfect for classroom debate and study.

The Modern Cowboy: Second Edition (Western Life Series)

The Modern Cowboy: Second Edition (Western Life Series)
John R. Erickson | 2004-05-25 00:00:00 | University of North Texas Press | 272 | United States
"The American cowboy is a mythical character who refuses to die," says author John R. Erickson. On the one hand he is a common man: a laborer, a hired hand who works for wages. Yet in his lonely struggle against nature and animal cunning, he becomes larger than life. Who is this cowboy? Where did he come from and where is he today? Erickson addresses these questions based on firsthand observation and experience in Texas and Oklahoma. And in the process of describing and defining the modern working cowboy-his work, his tools and equipment, his horse, his roping technique, his style of dress, his relationships with his wife and his employer-Erickson gives a thorough description of modern ranching, the economic milieu in which the cowboy operates. The first edition of this book was published in 1981. For this second edition Erickson has thoroughly revised and expanded the book to discuss recent developments in cowboy culture, making The Modern Cowboy the most up-to-date source on cowboy and ranch life today. "We meet the modern cowboy (his dress depends on weather, chores, and vanity) and follow him through the year: spring roundup, branding and 'working' the calves; spotting problem animals and cutting them from the herd; repairing windmills and mending fences; fall roundup, and feeding animals in winter. . . . This is a lively portrait, sure to appeal to all Western buffs."- Publishers Weekly "For a straightforward, highly readable account of today's cowboy, you can't do better. . . . Informative, engaging, and clearly the real thing."- Kirkus Reviews "Erickson has caught the ambience of the working cowboy, what he loves to do, and what he must do to keep a ranch operating day-to-day and season-to-season. In doing this, he actually provides an account of how much cowboying has changed in the hundred or so years of its existence."- Western American Literature
Reviews
I loved John R. Erickson's 1981 1st end edition of this book and wondered if the 2nd edition would live up to standards set by the first edition. I was not disappointed. Erickson gives a unique insight to cowboying. The chapters "Economics and the Cowboy" and "The Cowboys Wife" are in themselves enough to make this book a unique contribution to Western American literature.

I have only one small complaint about Erickson's work. That is that he gives feedyard cowboys the short shrift. His only discussion of them is a few condensending comments in "The Last Cowboy" chapter. He says he doesn't mean to disparage them and yet turns around and does just that. A book about "THE Modern Cowboy" needs a thorough treatment of feedyard cowboys. Moreover the distinction between feedyard cowboys and ranch cowboys is largely an artificial separation that exists only in Erickson's mind. The majority of feedyard cowboys that I've worked with have worked ranches and you will find quite a few ranch cowboys on the Great Plains who have put in their time in the feedyards. However, I would not let this one oversight of Erickson's keep me from reccommending this book to anyone and everyone.
Reviews
Now in its second edition, The Modern Cowboy strives to answer the query: who is the American cowboy? Where did he come from, and what is he today? Digging deep into American history, legend, and practical reality, as well as taking a solid look at the contemporary lives led today by men responsible for the welfare of cattle, The Modern Cowboy is a superb source of background material for anyone who truly wants to know more about the legendary figure who appears in so many Western novels and movies. Highly recommended both for entertainment and personal edification.

Reviews
I just finished reading The Modern Cowboy by John Erickson. It is a very good book about the life of the American cowboy. Erickson covers every aspect of the cowboy working on a ranch in our country. He not only covers the day to day life of the cowboy, he gives the reader a view of what is in the future for cowboys and ranching. A great book.

Pest and Vector Control

Pest and Vector Control
H. F. van Emden,M. W. Service | 2004-02-09 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 362 | Crop Science
As ravagers of crops and carriers of diseases affecting plants, humans and animals, insects present a challenge to a growing human population. In Pest and Vector Control, H.F. van Emden and Mike Service describe the available options for meeting this challenge, discussing their relative advantages, disadvantages and future potential. Methods such as chemical and biological control, host tolerance and resistance are discussed, intergrating--often for the first time--information and experience from the agricultural and medical/veterinary fields. Chemical control is seen as a major component of insect control, both now and in the future, but this is balanced with an extensive account of associated problems, especially the development of pesticide-tolerant populations. The authors are leading authorities in their respective fields and two of the best known entomologists of their generation.

A book for IT PROs
What a great book! I resolved a complex problem I had in less than 12 lines of code when I discovered the power of Associators on page 83. I have been using consumer events in other languages for many years, until I read Ed's book, I had no idea they could be used with WMI. This book is a very nice complement to chapters 8, 9 and 10 from his Microsoft Windows Scripting Self-Paced Learning Guide.

Although Ed's book is not a technical reference book (MSDN already provides syntax information), the appendixes provide all the key information required to search MSDN, SDK, CIM studio and other tools presented in the book. Rather than being focused on syntax and formal grammar, Ed's approach is to show IT PROs how to use WMI to resolve real life problems that need to be addressed on a daily basis. The CD contains many scripts that can be put to work with no or little modifications for your environment.

Ed's book goes further. It has a complete chapter on configuring and administering WMI, material which is typically not found in manuals but that are key for understanding and working with WMI.

Being a consultant, I consult the printed book on a regular basis and I have a copy of the electronic version on my laptop.

Great book with lots of good examples. Note correction below.
I recently attended a Microsoft sponsored workshop that was taught by the author of this book. I learned a great deal. If for nothing else, this book is worth purchasing to get a hold of the event consumer scripts. Important note: The author made the class aware that a line was missing in the event consumer script in both the print and companion CD versions.

To get the script to run, at the bottom of page 110 add the following line of code.

objfilter.EventNameSpace = `rootcimv2`

Stongly advise against this book
I don't like being so harsh, but I strongly advise you NOT purchase this book. My reason for this is the poor coverage of the material presented.

The first three chapters were fine. The author was building logically, presenting material in a logical fashion. He demonstrated some simple queries, and described them clearly. The examples were pretty basic, and served no signifcant purpose.

Chapter 4 is where the wheels started to come off (and continued through to chapter 6). With no explanation, or background material, terms and undocumented examples began to show up everywhere. By the time the author got to event queries, it was obvious this was a lost cause.

For example, page 70 of the book used an query example that included the additional clause `WITHIN 10`. I skipped around through pages, checked the indexed (and non existant glossary), but couldn't find an explanation. Eventually a check of MSDN explained what it was.

The section describing 'associators' on page 83 and 'references of' on page 85 were ambigious. The code examples provided no clarity, nor explanation.

I'm an experienced developer and administrator with 17 years in system's level programming. I had picked up this book to help get my hands around the topic of WMI -- to assist our administrative staff managing DFS-Replication services.

After two days, I've given up on the text, and purchased another more substantive manual `Developing WMI Solutions: A Guide to Windows Management Instrumentation`.

BTW: So as not to completely trash this book, it does provide an excellant CD. There are a terrific number of tools, sample source code and script templates. In addition, the CD includes an electronic version of the book, and an electronic copy of `Microsoft Windows Scripting Self-Paced Learning Guide`. Also, the later chapters develop some more useful scripts. If you need a cook-book to drop in one of these, you may find it useful.

In my advice, you'd be better off purchasing something else.

User review
Finally an excellent, well written indpeth wmi book
Over the years, I have purchased at least 5 wmi books. These books fall into two categories: the ones that never seem to go beyond the basics of running simple wmi queries, and those that are so far advanced, as to be virtually meaningless to a mere mortal. Now comes this book. This book is well written, with loads of analogies. It breaks the subject of WMI in to small enough chunks of information (each chapter is around 25 pages or so) so you can sit down read the book, and then do re-inforce the material by doing the labs. The fact that the person who wrote the book is a consultant, means the labs have real world application. I have taken many of the scripts from the book, and with only a few small changes, made them perform usefull work for me on my network. High points of the book: excellent coverage of WMI event driven scripts, and associators of type of queries. This has open new horizons for my scripts. Low points of the book: the labs for chapter one are lame ,,. I do not get this one. Every other chapter has awesome labs, but somehow chapter one kind of missed out. There are labs for chapter one, they just are not all that interesting. Would I buy this book again? You bet. In fact, I purchased 10 copies for the other network administrators at my company! I liked it that well.

A Tale of Two Cities: A novel

A Tale of Two Cities: A novel
Charles Dickens | 2003-01-01 00:00:00 | Usborne Books | 220 | Fiction Other
This book is incredible. I read it last year (in eighth grade), and I love it. I love Charles Dickens' language and style. Whoever is reading this may have little or no respect for my opinions, thinking that I am to young to comprehend the greatness of the plot and language, and I admit that I probably do not completely appreciate this classic piece of literature. I do read above a 12th grade level, although that doesn't count for a whole lot. It took me a while to get into this book. In fact, I dreaded reading it for a long time. But nearer to the end, I was drawn in by the poignant figure of a jackal, Sydney Carton. In his story I became enthralled with this book, especially his pitiful life. After I read and cried at Carton's transformation from an ignoble jackal to the noblest of persons, I was able to look back over the parts of the book that I had not appreciated, and realize how truly awesome they are. I learned to appreciate all of the characters, from Lucy Manette to Madame Defarge. I also was affected by all of the symbolism involved with both the French Revolution, and the nature of sinful man, no matter what the time or place. My pitiful review could never do justice to this great book, please don't be discouraged by my inability.

Global Positioning Systems, Inertial Navigation, and Integration

Global Positioning Systems, Inertial Navigation, and Integration
| 2007-01-22 00:00:00 | | 0 | Miscellaneous

An updated guide to GNSS and INS, and solutions to real-world GPS/INS problems with Kalman filtering

Written by recognized authorities in the field, this second edition of a landmark work provides engineers, computer scientists, and others with a working familiarity with the theory and contemporary applications of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Inertial Navigational Systems (INS), and Kalman filters. Throughout, the focus is on solving real-world problems, with an emphasis on the effective use of state-of-the-art integration techniques for those systems, especially the application of Kalman filtering. To that end, the authors explore the various subtleties, common failures, and inherent limitations of the theory as it applies to real-world situations, and provide numerous detailed application examples and practice problems, including GNSS-aided INS, modeling of gyros and accelerometers, and SBAS and GBAS.

Drawing upon their many years of experience with GNSS, INS, and the Kalman filter, the authors present numerous design and implementation techniques not found in other professional references. This Second Edition has been updated to include: GNSS signal integrity with SBAS Mitigation of multipath, including results Ionospheric delay estimation with Kalman filters New MATLAB programs for satellite position determination using almanac and ephemeris data and ionospheric delay calculations from single and dual frequency data New algorithms for GEO with L1 /L5 frequencies and clock steering Implementation of mechanization equations in numerically stable algorithms

To enhance comprehension of the subjects covered, the authors have included software in MATLAB, demonstrating the working of the GNSS, INS, and filter algorithms. In addition to showing the Kalman filter in action, the software also demonstrates various practical aspects of finite word length arithmetic and the need for alternative algorithms to preserve result accuracy.

GPS, INS and Kalman Filtering finally in one single book
This book puts all together concepts and theories normally found only in separated books. GPS, inertial navigation and how to integrate both things normally require reading a lot of different articles and journals. These subjects are individually complex and demanding but its modern GPS concepts approach were deep enough to allow the proper correlation between the inertial theory and GPS through the Kalman Filtering. The book demands some previous and basic concepts knowledge regarding filtering. And if you are a self-made student you will miss the answers for the proposed problems which worth trying to solve. But it should not prevent you to buy this book. It is clear that the authors are not only one of main expertise on their area but know how to transmit their great experience.

GPS World Magazine reviewer recommends this book
Here are some quotes from a review of this book in GPS World, July 2001, pp 46-47, by Dr. John Angus, a consultant and researcher in the area of GPS-aided navigation systems, AND professor at Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA. Dr. Angus' credentials qualify him to review this book.

`Noteworthy is the comprehensiveness of the material on GPS, Kalman filtering and Kalman filter engineering, and the appendix on coordinate transforms,,.An instructor could easily develop a one-semester course on basic GPS or a full year course on GPS and inertial navigation, each of them `glued` together by the Kalman filter and enlivened by computer experiments with the MATLAB code provided.`

`The writing,,.tends to be concise and the mathematics is kept to the minimum necessary to expose the theory and methods of filtering, GPS, and INS.`

`,,.effectively addresses most of the basic engineering and performance issues relating to GPS/INS.`

`,,.recommended for personal and professional libraries.`

This is an application-oriented book, which as such, does not include detailed mathematical derivations. It does provide Kalman filter algorithms (on floppy and in text), but if one needs the theory of Kalman filtering behind these, one needs to use a Kalman filtering text, such as Kalman Filtering Theory & Practice Using MATLAB (Second Edition), Wiley 2001, by Grewal and Andrews. The latter book gives all of the methods in square root filtering algorithms and derivations and more. If the `Asian Reviewer` is most interested in Kalman filtering, he/she would be better advised to buy a book on Kalman filtering.

Almost completely useless book ,,.
Of course the experience of the authors is great but none of it you can use either in your study or research. It is impossible to learn about Kalman filtering from this book as well as to improve your knowledge in this area. Book is intended for professionals in this area but professionals will not need it. Many intersting facts but no detailed information. For example one can know that the square root filtering method came from James Potter but there is nothing more about this method from this book. Otherwise you have to study sources of the software (included). Book is written as advertizing of author's skills and nothing else. Too much about nothing ,,.

Colloquial Scottish Gaelic: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series)

Colloquial Scottish Gaelic: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series)
Katie Graham,Katherine M. Spadaro | 2001-03-27 00:00:00 | Routledge | 304 | Gaelic
Colloquial Scottish Gaelic is the ideal introduction to the language of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland: a modern language with a rich tradition. This step-by-step approach has been devised to make speaking, reading and writing Scottish Gaelic easy and enjoyable. No previous knowledge of the language is required. What makes Colloquial Scottish Gaelic your best choice for learning the language?

* emphasis on up-to-date, conversational language
* clear explanations of how the language works
* helpful grammar notes
* comprehensive vocabulary lists (Scottish Gaelic-English and English-Scottish Gaelic)
* lively illustrations throughout

This rewarding course will give you confidence in using Scottish Gaelic in a wide range of situations. Two 60-minute cassettes are available to accompany Colloquial Scottish Gaelic. Recorded by native speakers, they will help you perfect your pronunciation, listening and speaking skills.
Reviews
I would respectfully disagree with a few of my fellow reviewers. This is a great way to start learning Scottish Gaelic. The audio is clear, and follows the book. The speakers might be fast, but that is how people normally talk. There is no point in the speakers talking slow, this gives you an opportunity to hear how Gaelic is really spoken. If you where to listen to slow speakers and learn to speak like that I'm sure that most native speakers would wonder why. Also you would not be able to understand native speakers, and would be asking them to speak slower or repeat themselves.

Now, I have tried to use Teach Yourself Irish which is similar is style to TY Gaelic. Both texts have dialogs followed by phrases and idioms. There is no true vocabulary lists aside from the vocabulary lists at the end of the book. That is my biggest problem with those books. I'm the type of person the needs to understand the words before understanding the idioms and such. Thus Colloquial Gaelic is on this line of thought, for after each dialog and most readings there is a vocabulary of words (not idioms!).

This might not be the best for everyone, but it works for me.
Reviews
An effective book for beginning Scottish Gaelic, especially now that it includes both CD and audio tape.
Reviews
One thing Colloquial Scottish Gaelic does very well is focusing on the phrases, expressions and idioms that are such an important part of the Gaelic language. However, the coverage of grammar is skimpy and inadequate. The pronunciation and spelling section at the beginning of the book is also quite poorly done; a lot of essential information is missing. In addition, what information there is describes a general Hebridean pronunciation, but the speakers on the accompanying recording have rather strong Lewis accents, and Lewis Gaelic is the most phonologically distinct dialect in the Hebrides; in short, the book describes (incompletely) one way of pronouncing Gaelic while the recordings feature another. I have personally had several students who got lost and confused trying to teach themselves with Colloquial Scottish Gaelic for this reason. So while I would say that this course is good supplementary material for somebody who already has studied some Gaelic, I do not recommend it as a first course for new students of the language.
Reviews
There's a long preamble, the pronunciation is very accurately explained, it runs later.
If you have some knowledge of Scottish Gaelic, it can be useful to have a rehearsal in little time; gaelic songs and crosswords are unvaluable.
Well, it's everything but an introduction to the language; I would be curious to know someone that has really become proficient only with the aid of that book.
If you don't want to forget your Gaelic, try it
Reviews
Look elsewhere for a beginning point in gaelic. This course seems to be okay for a person that has some gaelic understanding. A beginner starts like a child learning names of things and people and then basic adjectives. The basic verbs come next and then more sophisticated conjugations.
The tapes do follow the book but they go too quick driving me crazy pushing "stop, rewind and play" to repeat the word. The book gives the sounds of the vowels and consonants but many of the words heard on the tape defy any attempt to construct the same word phonetically as found in print. If you have an apptitude in languages then you could try this method of learning but if you are like most of us - don't! I have studied other languages but nothing like this ancient Gaelic, it has only 16 letters in its alphabet.

Analyzing Single System Design Data (Pocket Guides to Social Work Research Methods)

Analyzing Single System Design Data (Pocket Guides to Social Work Research Methods)
William Nugent | 2009-12-11 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 184 | Social Sciences
Single system, or single case, design studies are a convenient method for evaluating practice, allowing professionals to track clients' response to treatment and change over time. They also allow researchers to gather data where it might be difficult to conduct a study involving treatment and control groups; in a school setting, or a community mental health agency, for example, random assignment may be impossible, whereas individual student or client progress across time can be more easily monitored.

This pocket guide reviews a wide range of techniques for analyzing single system design data, including visual analysis methods, graphical methods, and statistical methods. From basic visual observation to complex ARIMA statistical models for use with interrupted time series designs, numerous data analysis methods are described and illustrated in this unique and handy book. The author frankly describes limitations and strengths of the data analysis methods so that readers can select an appropriate method and use the results responsibly in order to improve practice and client well-being.

This accessible yet in-depth introduction will serve as a highly practical resource for doctoral students and researchers alike.

Asian Englishes: Beyond The Canon (Asian Englishes Today)

Asian Englishes: Beyond The Canon (Asian Englishes Today)
Braj B. Kachru | 2005-06-30 00:00:00 | University of Washington Press | 1 | English
In recent decades, the cultural and linguistic legacies of the colonial era have been superseded by the globalization of English through the international mass media, particularly via satellite television and the Internet. In many societies that were previously the colonies of Anglophone powers, ‘new Englishes’ have appeared, visible most dramatically in the ‘new literatures’ of India, Singapore, the Philippines etc. However, many of these new Englishes are much older in provenance than many linguists have previously recognized. The process of British and American imperial expansion in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries took the English language to many parts of the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, China and Japan. Indeed, it is typically in these initial stages of political, historical and cultural contact that we can identify the dynamics of ‘languages in contact’, and the origins of ‘World Englishes’, in a range of settings, including South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia.

This Major Work from Routledge, a new title in the History and Development of World Englishes series, is a unique reference collection. It brings together a range of sources, reprinted in facsimile, charting the spread of English throughout Asia and the development of ‘Asian Englishes’ from the eighteenth century through to the 1960s.

The Archaeology of Animal Bones

The Archaeology of Animal Bones
Terry O'Connor | 2004-04-23 00:00:00 | Sutton Publishing Ltd | 224 | Social Sciences
Animal bones are one of the most abundant types of evidence found in archaeological sites dating from pre-historic times to the Middle Ages, and they can reveal a startling amount about the economy and way of life of people in the past. This is a fascinating introduction for anyone seeking how to understand how these bones can shed light on our knowledge of the past, as well as the complex relationship between human and animals. Written by one of the most respected experts in this field, and published for the first time in paperback, this book will be essential reading for archaeologists, or indeed anyone intrigued by the recreation of long lost worlds from the most insignificant-seeming fragments of animal bones.
Reviews
I have once again ordered Terry O'Connor's excellent introduction to zooarchaeology as the primary text for my one semester long (13 weeks) course on zooarchaeology.

While this is not a comprehensive guide to zooarchaeology, I believe it is the best introduction currently available for undergraduate students, for the following reasons:

a. it covers a wide range of topics, including areas that might receive less coverage in most North American courses (e.g. analysis of complex urban economies)

b. it uses examples from a variety of areas

c. it is well written, with little use of jargon

d. each chapter serves very well to introduce major topics in zooarchaeology; these can be supplemented by journal readings selected by the instructor to provide more detailed case studies for students to read.

e. it is reasonably priced

Coherent Stress Testing: A Bayesian Approach to the Analysis of Financial Risk

Coherent Stress Testing: A Bayesian Approach to the Analysis of Financial Risk
Riccardo Rebonato | 2010-08-03 00:00:00 | Wiley | 238 | Finance
In Coherent Stress Testing: A Bayesian Approach, industry expert Riccardo Rebonato presents a groundbreaking new approach to this important but often undervalued part of the risk management toolkit.

Based on the author's extensive work, research and presentations in the area, the book fills a gap in quantitative risk management by introducing a new and very intuitively appealing approach to stress testing based on expert judgement and Bayesian networks. It constitutes a radical departure from the traditional statistical methodologies based on Economic Capital or Extreme-Value-Theory approaches.

The book is split into four parts. Part I looks at stress testing and at its role in modern risk management. It discusses the distinctions between risk and uncertainty, the different types of probability that are used in risk management today and for which tasks they are best used. Stress testing is positioned as a bridge between the statistical areas where VaR can be effective and the domain of total Keynesian uncertainty. Part II lays down the quantitative foundations for the concepts described in the rest of the book. Part III takes readers through the application of the tools discussed in part II, and introduces two different systematic approaches to obtaining a coherent stress testing output that can satisfy the needs of industry users and regulators. In part IV the author addresses more practical questions such as embedding the suggestions of the book into a viable governance structure.

Spectacular Narratives: Hollywood in the Age of the Blockbuster (Cinema and Society)
Geoff King | 2001-02-03 00:00:00 | I. B. Tauris | 192 | Cinematography
What makes today's Hollywood films so successful? Is it the sheer scale of special effects that gives films like "Jurassic Park" or "The Matrix" their mass audience appeal? Geoff King looks at the underexplored dynamic relationship between narrative and spectacle in contemporary Hollywood cinema. He uses the myth of the American frontier against a range of Hollywood filmsand drawes examples from the digital-effects-based and virtual-reality spectacles, space fictions, action films, war epics and disaster films that now dominate cinema.

Image, Language, Brain: Papers from the First Mind Articulation Project Symposium

Image, Language, Brain: Papers from the First Mind Articulation Project Symposium
Alec Marantz,Yasushi Miyashita,Wayne O'Neil | 2000-12-25 00:00:00 | The MIT Press | 280 | Foreign Languages
Recent attempts to unify linguistic theory and brain science have grown out of recognition that a proper understanding of language in the brain must reflect the steady advances in linguistic theory of the last forty years. The first Mind Articulation Project Symposium addressed two main questions: How can the understanding of language from linguistic research be transformed through the study of the biological basis of language? And how can our understanding of the brain be transformed through this same research? The best model so far of such mutual constraint is research on vision. Indeed, the two long-term goals of the Project are to make linguistics and brain science mutually constraining in the way that has been attempted in the study of the visual system and to formulate a cognitive theory that more strongly constrains visual neuroscience. The papers in this volume discuss the current status of the cognitive/neuroscience synthesis in research on vision, whether and how linguistics and neuroscience can be integrated, and how integrative brain mechanisms can be studied through the use of noninvasive brain-imaging techniques. Contributors Noam Chomsky, Ann Christophe, Robert Desimone, Richard Frackowiak, Angela Friederici, Edward Gibson, Peter Indefrey, Masao Ito, Willem Levelt, Alec Marantz, Jacques Mehler, Yasushi Miyashita, David Poeppel, Franck Ramus, John Reynolds, Kensuke Sekihara, Hiroshi Shibasaki.

An Introduction to Riemann-Finsler Geometry (Graduate Texts in Mathematics)

An Introduction to Riemann-Finsler Geometry (Graduate Texts in Mathematics)
David Dai-Wai Bao,Shiing-Shen Chern,Zhongmin Shen | 2000-03-17 00:00:00 | Springer | 431 | Mathematics
In Riemannian geometry, measurements are made with both yardsticks and protractors. These tools are represented by a family of inner-products. In Riemann-Finsler geometry (or Finsler geometry for short), one is in principle equipped with only a family of Minkowski norms. So yardsticks are assigned but protractors are not. With such a limited tool kit, it is natural to wonder just how much geometry one can uncover and describe? It now appears that there is a reasonable answer. Finsler geometry encompasses a solid repertoire of rigidity and comparison theorems, most of them founded upon a fruitful analogue of the sectional curvature. There is also a bewildering array of explicit examples, illustrating many phenomena which admit only Finslerian interpretations. This book focuses on the elementary but essential items among these results. Much thought has gone into making the account a teachable one. David Bao is Professor of Mathematics and of the Honors College, at the University of Houston. He obtained his Ph. D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1983, with Jerry Marsden as his advisor. Before coming to Houston, he did two years of post-doctoral studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Besides differential geometry, he is passionately curious about the ways cats and goldfish think. Shiing-Shen Chern is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley, and Director Emeritus of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. He is also Distinguished Visiting Professor Emeritus at the University of Houston. Chern received his D. Sc. in 1936, as a student of W. Blaschke. He carried out his post-doctoral studies under E. Cartan. Chern has garnered a good number of distinctions to date. These include the Chauvenet Prize (1970), National Medal of Science (1975), the Humboldt Award (1982), the Steele Prize (1983), and the Wolf Foundation Prize (1983-84). Zhongmin Shen is Associate Professor of Mathematics at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He earned his Ph. D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1990 under Detlef Gromoll. He spent 1990-91 at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley, and 1991-93 as a Hildebrandt Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
Reviews
The authors claim to turn the subject of Finsler geometry with this book

into a more teachable one and to have a candid style of writing.

This is definitly true for the first 50 pages, where the concepts of

Finsler geometry are very well explained and the exercises

are manageable and perfectly interrelated with the text.

Then the Chern connection and the curvature tensor of Finsler geometry

drop out of the heaven without any explanation of the ideas leading to these

constructions. So one has to derive them alone. In doing so older

texts on Finsler geometry like the Grundlehren text of Rund are more

helpful than this volume.

But the book was apparently prepared with great care. The layout must be called

beautyful and it really facilitates reading this book. Many references

to the literature and classical papers of the subject are included. So beginners,

which want to get a first aquaintance in Finsler geometry, find at least some help.
