Israeli Culture between the Two Intifadas: A Brief Romance

Israeli Culture between the Two Intifadas: A Brief Romance
Yaron Peleg | 2008-12-01 00:00:00 | University of Texas Press | 170 | Middle East
Over the past two decades, profound changes in Israel opened its society to powerful outside forces and the dominance of global capitalism. As a result, the centrality of Zionism as an organizing ideology waned, prompting expressions of anxiety in Israel about the coming of a post-Zionist age. The fears about the end of Zionism were quelled, however, by the Palestinian uprising in 2000, which spurred at least a partial return to more traditional perceptions of homeland. Looking at Israeli literature of the late twentieth century, Yaron Peleg shows how a young, urban class of Israelis felt alienated from the Zionist values of their forebears, and how they adopted a form of escapist romanticism as a defiant response that replaced traditional nationalism.One of the first books in English to identify the end of the post-Zionist era through inspired readings of Hebrew literature and popular media, "Israeli Culture between the Two Intifadas" examines Israel's ambivalent relationship with Jewish nationalism at the end of the twentieth century.
Reviews
"Israeli Culture between the Two Intifadas" is on the ROROTOKO list of cutting-edge intellectual nonfiction. Professor Peleg's book interview ran here as cover feature on April 21, 2009.

Practical Text Mining with Perl (Wiley Series on Methods and Applications in Data Mining)

Practical Text Mining with Perl (Wiley Series on Methods and Applications in Data Mining)
| 2008-08-18 00:00:00 | | 0 | Perl

Provides readers with the methods, algorithms, and means to perform text mining tasks

This book is devoted to the fundamentals of text mining using Perl, an open-source programming tool that is freely available via the Internet (www.perl.org). It covers mining ideas from several perspectives--statistics, data mining, linguistics, and information retrieval--and provides readers with the means to successfully complete text mining tasks on their own.

The book begins with an introduction to regular expressions, a text pattern methodology, and quantitative text summaries, all of which are fundamental tools of analyzing text. Then, it builds upon this foundation to explore: Probability and texts, including the bag-of-words model Information retrieval techniques such as the TF-IDF similarity measure Concordance lines and corpus linguistics Multivariate techniques such as correlation, principal components analysis, and clustering Perl modules, German, and permutation tests

Each chapter is devoted to a single key topic, and the author carefully and thoughtfully introduces mathematical concepts as they arise, allowing readers to learn as they go without having to refer to additional books. The inclusion of numerous exercises and worked-out examples further complements the book's student-friendly format.

Practical Text Mining with Perl is ideal as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses in text mining and as a reference for a variety of professionals who are interested in extracting information from text documents.

Christian Zanier | 2007-01-03 00:00:00 | Amerotica | 48 | Fantasy
After the orgy of violence that has befallen she-boy Alex and the amazingly buxom Simone, Alex, in a stupor, or possibly even coma, dreams back to her past from grimy sex for sale to a sublime encounter with Simone??? Not quite as violent as the previous volumes, this one breathes with the heat and surrender of sweet sex, as we get to know Alex better.

After two blood-and-gore fests, Mr. Zanier pulled back on those and ramped up the sex in a flashback by the shemale. All I can say is, "It's about time!" The first two made me very leery about getting this one, but now I'm glad I did. I hope this trend continues in Volume 4.

Exploring in vivid detail the trap into which the dreams of America's leaders have taken us and the likely consequences of our dependence on a permanent war economy, Johnson's prophetic book, Nemesis, shows how imperial overstretch is undermining the republic itself, economically and politically.
Reviews
In a day and age of mindless reality TV shows and copious books written for the pop culture mind, Chalmers Johnson deftly and thoroughly defines, both from a modern perspective and historically as well, why America can keep its empire and lose its democracy or lose its empire and keep its democracy. It, however, cannot do both simultaneously. You will never read or listen to another news report in the same way after reading this book. In my opinion, we may have elected a new and very capable president, but a larger corporate machine actually rules the earth.

Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic (American Empire Project)
Reviews
Chalmers' previous work, Blowback had come highly recommended to me by a friend whose political views are pretty much the opposite of mine, but who I deeply respect and quite enjoy arguing with. I had really intended to read that volume first, but as I am live in Germany and must take what I can get in terms of English writing, I came across this one first.

I was deeply disappointed with this book. Let me open by putting my cards on the table; I suppose I am relatively conservative, with an emotional bent towards libertarianism, but I've studied enough economics and read enough politics to temper my emotions with reason. I like the United States, but am not blind to its flaws nor am I a fan of Bush, Cheney, or their associates, and I did not vote for them in either election in which they ran. I also feel that the Iraq war has been an almost unmitigated disaster. The nation needs a serious and critical discussion examining our response to 9/11, and some soul searching about how to deal with it and how to deal with future events of its type that will likely occur. "Nemesis" is not a serious examination.

To be sure, Mr. Chalmers has extensively footnoted his tome, perhaps in an attempt to give it a sheen of academic respectability. Footnotes, however, can be a double edged sword. After all, the reader may actually go out and look them up, as I have done to more than a few of them.

Mr. Chalmers opens the book with some contentions that are, and there is no kinder way to put this, sheer fantasy. The first is that some sort of military coup lies just around the corner. He states early on that General Tommy Franks is "open to the idea that `the constitution could be scrapped in favor of a military form of government.'" (Nemesis, p.14) I'm relatively familiar with the organizational culture of the American military. I've never served, but I did write my master's thesis about the origins of military coups in developing countries, and did extensive work comparing their military cultures to that of the European powers (particularly the UK) and the United States. Given that my research indicated that civilian objective control is a deeply ingrained value in American military culture, I found this comment a little surprising. I can't imagine a four star general stating, or even thinking, that knocking of the congress and the president would be a good idea. So I dug out the original interview with Franks, where he actually laments the militarization of US foreign policy, and states that a military coup would be a "worst case scenario." That's hardly being, as Mr. Chalmers claims, "open to the idea." Of course, the source for Mr. Chalmers claims is the Propagandmatrix website, which is hardly reputable, and also distorts General Franks statements to the point of libel. So either Mr. Chalmers is deliberately distorting the truth about General Frank's statement, or he's simply a very bad researcher. I'll be charitable and assume the latter.

Throughout the book, Mr. Chalmers' sources are either biased, dodgy, misquoted, or out and out bogus. He also seems to be carrying a very serious political axe to grind.

The truth is that neither party, Republicans or Democrats, covered themselves with glory in the lead up to the Iraq war. The Republicans were vainglorious and foolhardy, and the Democrats willingly supine. But the people singled out for excoriation are, unsurprisingly, almost exclusively members of one party. Guess which one it is.

An additional target for slander is the US military itself. "...Soldiers are unaccountable for their acts to any authority except their military superiors...[US Military] investigations are normally oriented towards covering up what happened. (Nemesis, p.31)" This is both misleading and blatently misrepresentative of actual events. The military does indeed have its own court system, and its own body of regulations (the Universal Code of Military Justice), and soldiers that commit crimes while under the flag are prosecuted and dealt with by this system. But I would like to remind the reader that it is no picnic to be prosecuted under the UCMJ- most penalties are far harsher than civilians would likely receive outside the system. I would also like to point out that the Judge Advocate General's Corps is by no means a rubber stamp body. The only significant resistance, for example, to the extreme broadening of rules governing torture did not come from Congress, or from civilian legal groups (although some of them did object). The most vehement, longstanding, and effective attempt to stop the "broadening" of interrogation techniques, or use of "enhanced interrogation, came from within the military. It was the JAG that fought the good fight. (Josh White, Washington Post, July 15th, 2005). The Military lawyers that I know universally condemn these procedures as both unlawful, ill conceived, and ineffective. Mr. Chalmers want to present a picture of the military as wishing to run buck wild and fight the whole planet. This is hardly the case.

Mr. Chalmers problems with sources extend beyond misquotation into misrepresentation or misidentification. "Historian" Kevin Baker is actually a journalist who has written a historical novel. Is Dan Brown also a "historian?" Naomi Klein, though potentially a good source, is presented as an uncontroversial one, which she is not. Items from conspiracy theory websites are valued at the same rate as legitimate news organs as the Washington Post. Noam Chomsky is taken seriously. Good God, it's awful.

In all seriousness, the issues that this book addresses need to be talked about, and this book needs to be written. But not by Mr. Chalmers.

Reviews
If I was to base my review of this book based solely on it's depth of information and the necessity for it to be read by those who aren't aware of America's behavior in other countries, or who are obstinately in denial about it, I would give it 5 stars. Chalmers Johnson isn't just some policy wonk or wind bag pundit; he's a guy that has had a lot of hands-on experience in dealing with the issues he talks about in this book. His level of detail and sense of urgency are tangible.

The reason I gave it 3 stars is because:

1.) As someone pointed out, this book is pretty depressing. The picture Mr. Johnson paints is pretty bleak, so much so that his comparisons to Rome and it's fall seem like a fait accompli; an unchangeable fate of collapse and hardship. While his analysis may be spot on, it certainly doesn't leave the reader with the warm and fuzzies.

2.) The authors data is sound and his theories may prove to be true, but he does also have some opinions that have to be sorted through. He definitely has some opinions about things that are, of course, going to set the arch of the narrative he's writing, but they do occasionally manifest themselves in the form of personal attacks. The dust jacket of the book will certainly confirm that he isn't/wasn't a fan of the Bush administration, but he also seems to have a problem with author Thomas Friedman and takes a very negative view of Congressman Charlie Wilson's actions towards Afghanistan.

Pros: The author shows the reader a world that isn't often covered by most regular, liberal, or conservative media sources. America's armaments manufacturing industry, world wide network of military bases (garrisons), and concentration of too much power in the hands of too few are dirty little secrets no one can deny responsibility for. This is important information that people should know about.

There are some good history lessons here for those that aren't familiar with America's Machiavellian tinkering with the political systems of other countries.

This book should serve as a clear warning to those of us that still care enough about the US to not bury our heads in the sands of ignorance or pointless self aggrandizement.

Cons: This book is depressing. It's stark history and cold analysis. Reality is brutal and we have to accept our part in it or fail.

The author's opinions will instantly turn off people of a certain mindset. The author isn't a pinko liberal elitist, but I'm sure his angle on things will make some think he is.

Not the good-time read of the summer.

If you have the guts to take a body blow to your patriotism, and the brains to weed out the author's personal BS, READ THIS BOOK.
Reviews
Together all three books in Johnson's "American Empire Project", Blowback, The Sorrows of Empire, & the final one, Nemesis should serve as a wake-up call to the dangers facing this country & the sobering thought that the last days of the American Republic might actually be at hand. These are not the only good books written on this subject but they're among the best I've read. I thoroughly enjoyed them. They should be read in the chronological order in which they were written. Excellent treatment of a truly scary subject. Well done!
Reviews
Nemesis is the most negative book I've read in years. The author, an academic intelectual, has virtually NOTHING good to say about America or Americans. He has the Noam Chomsky-Chicken Little view of the world. ANYTHING wrong is America's fault no matter what.We are the most dangerous, evil, contemptable, bunch of corrupt people in the world. There is no relief from the first page to the last. It is too one sided to have ANY merit.

C# Design Patterns: A Tutorial

C# Design Patterns: A Tutorial
| 2002-09-17 00:00:00 | | 0 | Design Patterns

The first book for C# programmers on how to use Design Patterns. Explains how to write C# programs using some of the most common design patterns. Softcover. CD-ROM included.

User review
Questionable Content
I bought the book in high hopes and good faith for a well researched and easy to read text. I was mistaken.

I didn't mind the first 7 chapters being a sort of 'programming overview' and introduction to the concepts used in the book - what I did mind was that it was poorly expressed, often missed key points and was sloppy and felt rushed. For example, in Chapter 4 some of the code (in the 4th edition of the text mind you), went something like this:

if (index > length of array) {

return array[index]

} else {

return special value

}

I am sure I am the only one to see the problem with that.

Then in chapter 7 (I think), they have this gem:

pos = string.trim().indexOf(` `);

if (pos > 0) {

left = string.substring(0, pos).trim();

,,,,

}

Ok, so most of the time this is going to work, but if the string begins with some whitespace? *sigh*

Then when they finally got to the patterns, it still felt rushed, the descriptions were little more than an introduction to the code (as stated already questionable) that implemented the pattern - not much to give you that 'aha' moment they talked about in the introduction, and from what I understand they didn't even explain the Singleton pattern correctly,,,,

It was at this point that I returned the book and bought the original `Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software` - at least I know they know what they are talking about, and so far it has been much better (and cheaper), so now I can relax and actually learn something.

In this book's defence I didn't actually open the CD and try to run the code to see if they had fixed the bugs as written in the text - but if a programming book can't even match discussed code with runnable code, then it's pretty poorly written/maintained in my opinion.

Nuf said.

Quite A Different Way Of Mind
While reading this book, I found myself wondering what took me so long to get this book. It's not difficult to read, and each of its 22 design patterns is both applicatable for different goals I needed, and easy to implement in my code.

I recommand this book to anyone starting to program C# applications, and/or Buisness logic classes.

It blew my mind, and Improved my C-Sharp skills a lot.

I hope it does the same for you !

User review
Waste of money - I wish I hadn't bought this,,.
Basically a horrible book for the same reasons listed by all the other 1 star ratings. I bought it on a whim whilst browsing in a bookstore - wished I'd read a review or few first.

To echo my major issues with it:

- The book is 363 pages long, the first 96 being a tutorial on C# and OO, so its effectively only 259 pages on design patterns.

- The tutorial pupports to teach you both C# and OO general principles in 96 pages (and some UML as well)? Seriously now,,.

- The whole book is full of typographical errors, particularly in the code with regards to erroneous spaces (or lack of) - there are inconsistencies everywhere, as well as misspelled words etc. etc.

- Poor and erroneous commenting e.g.: //create a new Arraylist

- Examples are very contrived and often far from real world scenarios. I realise examples have to be somewhat contrived for print publishing, but this goes way too far,,.

- As others have mentioned, the code seems more like Java than C# a lot of the time.

Given the above, I haven't even bothered to load the CD.

Consequently the only bits of the book that are actually valuable are the bits transcribed and summarised from other people books, most obviously the classic `Design Patterns` be Gamma et. al. Given this you're much better off just referring to the original source material. (Ironically both of these books are published by Addison-Wesley)

User review
Terrible book for beginner or expert
I'm what I would call an advanced C# developer, but have always felt I could use some education in accepted design patterns. I thought this book would be a great start. Boy was I wrong! I second every complaint I've read in these user reviews.

That said, I'd like to add one more to the list: Often there was nothing in the text to explain how exactly the example code exemplified the pattern being discussed! This was maddening to me--you get some bad code, then an unnecessary line-by-line description of how the bad code works, but you're no closer to understanding the proper application of the design pattern.

User review
Very solid read
Personally, I found this book very easy to read - and I actually appreciate the fact that some time is spent on C# fundamentals prior to diving into the patterns. If you're already a C# master, skip the intro and go right to the patterns. But just about everyone can use a refresher on language fundamentals so even though I'm pretty familiar with C#, I still found it a valuable part of the book.

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics 2th Edition

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics 2th Edition
David J. Griffiths | 2004-04-10 00:00:00 | | 0 | Mechanical Engineering
I used this text book for my undergraduate quantum mechanics class. In that class, we covered basically everything in Griffiths. I have since gone on to graduate school. I have found myself very well prepared and I still use Griffiths as a reference because it explains basic ideas and basic problems better than most other text books. More importantly, it provided me with a good foundation for further study.
This text book is a great introductory text book. It is a text book for students for whom quantum mechanics is a new subject. It is not a text book for people who already know any significant amount of quantum mechanics, nor is it a great text to use for independent study (unless you work the problems and have some way of checking yourself.)
Shankar is too advanced for most students new to the subject. It's also too much material to cover in a standard two semester course where the material is completely new. The only school I know of which uses it is Yale, and they count on students having a stronger background than most students at most schools have. Moreover, I know from personal experience that teachers at Yale focus on getting students to calculate the right answer rather than developing a solid understanding of the ideas behind the physics.

The Economics of Sustainable Development: The Case of India (Natural Resource Management and Policy)

The Economics of Sustainable Development: The Case of India (Natural Resource Management and Policy)
Surender Kumar,Shunsuke Managi | 2009-06-22 00:00:00 | Springer | 312 | Economics

This book provides a look at the current status and future potential of sustainable development in India. Macroeconomic developments, regional disparity and poverty situation, the trend in natural resource depletion and environmental degradation, trajectory of economic development, and conventional wealth are discussed. A history of environmental regulations and the current state of the environment in India are provided along with the possible reasons for non-compliance of environmental standards in the country. This book studies many different aspects of industries in India from supply and demand sides and efficiency and productivity analyses are provided in detail. Before the liberalization of its economy began in 1991, India had been one of the most over-regulated and closed economies in the world. Market productivity is examined and tests whether the post-reform period shows any improvement in productivity and efficiency in comparison to the pre-reform period. Other subjects are discussed, including the economic value that the urban population of India places on improving the air quality, the cost of sustainable industrial development, industrial water use and analysis of the relationship between the price of oil and the macro economy as it applies to India.

Technological change is central to maintaining standards of living in modern economies with finite resources and increasingly stringent environmental goals. Successful environmental policies can contribute to efficiency by encouraging, rather than inhibiting, technological innovation. However, little research to date has focused on the design and implementation of environmental regulations that encourage technological progress, or in insuring productivity improvements in the face of increasing stringency of environmental regulations, especially in developing countries. This study models and measures productivity change, with an application to India using Data Envelopment Analysis, which is critical because energy resources are central to sustaining an economy. The traditional issues of measuring productivity change were recast by recognizing that production activity implicitly embodies joint production of market and environmental outputs. Furthermore, the Porter Hypothesis, which states that well designed environmental regulations can potentially contribute to productive efficiency in the long run by encouraging innovation, is tested using the panel data of 92 water-polluting firms.

The advent of ever more sophisticated molecular manipulation techniques has made it clear that cellular systems are far more complex and dynamic than previously thought. At the same time, experimental techniques are providing an almost overwhelming amount of new data. It is increasingly apparent that linking molecular and cellular structure to function will require the use of new computational tools. This book provides specific examples, across a wide range of molecular and cellular systems, of how modeling techniques can be used to explore functionally relevant molecular and cellular relationships. The modeling techniques covered are applicable to cell, developmental, structural, and mathematical biology; genetics; and computational neuroscience. The book, intended as a primer for both theoretical and experimental biologists, is organized in two parts: models of gene activity and models of interactions among gene products. Modeling examples are provided at several scales for each subject. Each chapter includes an overview of the biological system in question and extensive references to important work in the area.

Reviews
This book has good content but what a cheap company for not including listening CD's! How silly is this? How are you supposed to get practice? Reading the scripts isn't the same. I recommend BARRON's 2009 AP Spanish Language Prep because there are plenty of difficult audio practice activities that will challenge you and really prepare you well for the AP test. Don't BUY this book unless you just want to practice reading comprehension.
Reviews
Don't buy this book unless you only want more written practice activities and you think the price justifies it. THERE ARE NO CDs for the listening or speaking sections so you can not do those sections. What is a student supposed to do, read the conversations and interact, read the dialogs and answer questions? It's not the same thing. I'm sorry that is just stupid and I am stupid for not reading the fine print. How cheap can a publishing company get? I have not found any CDs in existance, as far as I know they cannot be purchased separately. That being said, the practice activities are ok and this book would supplement another practice book if you run out of reading or grammar activities. It is nice and short and doesn't waste a hundred pages on explanation that no one reads anyway. Good luck getting a five without practicing the listening and speaking sections, I guess they left that out of their five steps.

On second thought, I strongly recommend this book for Latinos whose native language is Spanish or who speak Spanish at home or in their neighborhoods. Why would you need to practicet the listening and speaking anyway? In that case, this book is cheaper than others and just focuses on the academics.

America's Backyard: The United States and Latin America from the Monroe Doctrine to the War on Terror

America's Backyard: The United States and Latin America from the Monroe Doctrine to the War on Terror
Grace Livingstone | 2009-04-15 00:00:00 | Zed Books | 256 | Central America

Using newly-declassified documents, Grace Livingstone reveals the U.S. role in the darkest periods of Latin American history including Pinochet's coup in Chile, the Contra War in Nicaragua and the death squads in El Salvador. She shows how the U.S. administration used the War on Terror as a new pretext for intervention and how it tried to destabilize leftwing governments and push back the 'pink tide' washing across the Americas.  America's Backyard also has chapters on drugs, economy and culture. It explains why U.S. drug policy has caused widespread environmental damage, yet failed to reduce the supply of cocaine and looks at the U.S. economic stake in Latin America and the strategies of the big corporations. Today Latin Americans are demanding respect and an end to the Washington Consensus. Will the White House listen?

Ecological Engineering: Principles and Practice

Ecological Engineering: Principles and Practice
Patrick Kangas | 2003-09-25 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 472 | Conservation
Less expensive and more environmentally appropriate than conventional engineering approaches, constructed ecosystems are a promising technology for environmental problem solving. Graduate students need an introductory text that details the biology and the ecology of this rapidly developing discipline, known as ecological engineering. Ecological Engineering: Principles and Practice fills this need by describing ecological concepts and theory and demonstrating their application to constructed ecosystems. Designed as a textbook for a semester length graduate-level course, the text introduces the major concepts and methods of ecological engineering along with this new discipline's most important real-world applications: treatment wetlands, microcosms, composting systems, restoration ecology, soil bioengineering, and invasive species control. The text surveys the field with an introductory chapter on definitions and principles, six chapters treating major sub-fields, a chapter on applications of economics, and a conclusion chapter with synthetic propositions with comments on education and future directions.

Zakk Wylde - Special Guitar Lecture Pentatonic Speedballer

Zakk Wylde - Special Guitar Lecture Pentatonic Speedballer
Zakk Wylde | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Black Label Society | 11 | Video (tutorials, how-to, etc.)
Speaking of Zakk Wylde, you know, "Hey, kids, this is Zakk Wylde of Hootie and the Blowfish fame, Ozzie Osbourne, Blue Cheer, Black Label Society [pauses] and a Lawrence Welk man" [I loved that line in the GW "Guitar Heroes" DVD], anyway, back to the 2006 issued Euro-invasion "Doom Troopin" DVD [double disk] and Zakk and the band are doing "Genocide Junkies" -- now Just as Zakk is known to hurl 'whatever' into the audience, he's also known to pull members of the audience up on the stage. In this case, a guy is plucked from the audience [the guy is wearing a black T-shirt but I can't quite make out what it says although it's not the BLS logo or BLS 'colors' thing], so Zakk hands the guy his guitar and the guy begins jamming with the band! For anyone in the know -- was this someone known to Zakk or just an audience member who simply began jamming with the band and did rather well to boot! As for Zakk himself, what can I say, I like the guy's humor when the expectation is that he'll be on the more serious side as when asked in that last GW video to make with the guitar lesson and Zakk botches [but not on purpose] the A minor pentatonic scale demonstration but, as could have been predicted, simply keeps going, smiles, finishes up and declares, "Yes, my name is Mookey Fish" [pauses] "Kids, practice it enough and 'you' can get it as clean as that ... I've done it like that for many years, decades actually ... that is pure clarity." I loved it! That segment, BTW, is presently making the rounds on Youtube-com and approaching 7 thousand hits! Hey! I'm always in favor of a sense of humor versus those who seem to be perpetually standing under a cloud and/or forever sucking on lemons!

PHP Object-Oriented Solutions

PHP Object-Oriented Solutions
| 2008-08-21 00:00:00 | | 0 | PHP

With the surge of popularity of PHP 5, and with PHP 6 just around the corner, Object-Oriented Programming is now an important consideration for PHP developers. This version-neutral book is a gentle introduction to Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) that wont overburden you with complex theory. It teaches you the essential basics of OOP that youll need to know before moving onto a more advanced level, and includes a series of pre-packaged scripts that you can incorporate into your existing sites with the minimum of effort. It shows how OOP can be used to create reusable and portable code by walking you through a series of simple projects. The projects feature the sorts of things developers run up against every day, and include a validator for filtering user input, a simple Date class that avoids the need to remember all the esoteric format codes in PHP, and an XML generator. Teaches the fundamentals of OOP Simple projects show how OOP concepts work in the real world Pre-packaged scripts can easily be added to your own projects What youll learn PHP features, such as the Standard PHP Library (SPL), that are poorly documented or ignored by existing books How to develop classes of their own OOP in easy-to-understand language without getting bogged down in dense theory Solid foundations for developers wishing to delve more deeply into OOP How to leverage the strengths of OOP as a means for creating reusable code that can be used successfully within a procedural context How to code for both PHP 5 and 6 Who is this book for? This book is aimed at intermediate-level PHP developers who want to take their skills to the next level by exploring object-oriented programming as a way of creating reusable code for a everyday website tasks. A typical reader would be someone who has read one of the authors previous title, such as PHP Solutions, or one of the PHP books for Dreamweaverand feels ready to tackle something a little more challenging.

User review
Good Beginner Knowledge for Diving into PHP OOP
I should of listened to the previous reviewers who said that this book did not go far enough into the PHP language.

As I already am aware of OOP and the basic concepts from JAVA and Actionscript, I wanted to find a book that would show me the syntax and procedures in PHP. This book is a good foundation for that but I quickly out grew it.

I do still think its a solid book for learning PHP as its clear and easy to read.

User review
Great Book For Intro To OOP/PHP
If you have a solid understanding of procedural PHP, including variables, functions, arrays etc. then this is the perfect next step. It's a great introduction to classes, objects, abstract classes and interfaces. It's a pretty easy read but prepare to do some studying and follow along by writing the code out yourself for practice.

User review
Best way to learn OOP in PHP
I have read a few books on OOP (there is always something new to learn), but this one is the best by far.

Good constant level of complexity; not too abstract, not too easy, but something to put your teeth in, sweat a little, but in the end come to a good understanding of the subject without frustrations.

There are many examples following the to the point explanations. It's always a challenge for an author I guess to address the reader at a good adequate level to hold his/her attention. Knowing where the bottlenecks are. Giving a concrete example when it start to become abstract. Offering meaningful cases. The author does al that!

This book is a real must for anybody who wants too start learning OOP from the beginning, although it's recommendable to know a good deal of (procedural) php when starting with this book.

User review
If you wanna be sure to get it,,. here's the way.
The book is pretty straight foward, and presents the subject matter in a down to earth, understandable way. Plus it's well organized so it makes a rather handy reference as well. If I had to gripe about one thing it's the quantity of information in the book. It's a great book, don't get me wrong, but I would have loved for it to keep going. Help me understand more. Perhaps another volume is on the way?

User review
Once again, David gets how to teach us regular folks.
Excellent transition book! I had started some basic OOP PHP coding, but this book helps you really understand how to make the leap from procedural to OOP. I love David Powers books.

The Economic and Social Impacts of E-Commerce

The Economic and Social Impacts of E-Commerce
Sam Lubbe,Johanna Maria Van Heerden | 2003-03-20 00:00:00 | Idea Group Publishing | 279 | Economics
E-Commerce has brought about many changes in organizations and has had significant impacts on the quality of life that is experienced by individuals or even indirectly as members of society. The need to have fast and efficient information on products is crucial to our socially conscious and technologically dependent society; hence, information technology has increased the intolerable burden of handling the increasing amount of information and human errors which the society is expected to contend with. The Economic and Social Impacts of E-Commerce addresses issues associated with the advent of e-commerce, and its significance within society.
Reviews
This book is covering all the aspects of the economic and social aspects of e-Commerce. It is well thought through. I enjoyed the book.
