Good for beginners,,.
The book is a solid offering, actually the ONLY offering, of paper references for the Unity engine. It is a clear, reasonable, well executed book that goes step by step from infancy to toddler stage in learning Unity. It thankfully doesn't spend a lot of time teaching common game programming concepts, but does cover them just enough to keep readers oriented in the right direction.

Much of the book is covered in the documentation available online, but in a sensible and orderly and readable fashion. The writer uses clear, understandable examples in most cases.

As a beginner book, it is stellar. What it begs is for another book to be written which covers intermediate and advanced topics. For professional development, there are quite a few topics that merit coverage (Asset pipeline, dynamic loading, professional code structure, advanced UI, advanced animation, render targets, build pipeline, advanced optimization and profiling, asset server, etc.) These are still untouched topics that could fill a second volume.

See for yourselve
That book is a must, cause there is no other book anyway. It dose the job to teach some stuff like ray casting, collision detection etc,,. But some stuff are missing, like real explanation of every meaning of the line by line. More the book advanced and less explanation you get. If you never really programmed object oriented, not much knowledge of game design, you might think it is not such a good book. But if you have experience with unity you might find it interesting. The book aim at basic stuff, but it kinda assume you know how to program Flash and actionscript. I learned BASIC, so jumping with dots everywhere in the statement to get something dose it a head hacke for me.

The book would be 5* if it explained how to get by yourselves in the script reference (the help file about scripting in Unity) and find your way there. But it don't do so, after reading the whole book, I can do the examples mentioned, but I am not sure about all of them or how to create my own cause everything he describe is not explained all the time.

The author feed us, but dose not teach us how to go fishing by yourselves. But the book is a must, if you are looking for a book, it is because you want to know more about unity, that is the right way.

Unity Game Development Essentials is here. Now Read the F***ing Manual
Will Goldstone's Unity Game Development Essentials (UGDE) has arrived. It's the first book about the [,,.] Unity Game Engine by the person whose videos were the first and most comprehensive Unity videos to date. Will also runs [,,.] and [,,.] is a crisp and detailed primer into the powerful Unity engine, 3D programing and game development all at once. Will shares his hard-earned insight and productivity tips as he guides you through learning the Unity IDE. In the early chapters you will learn the various tools available for developing realistic terrains complete with varied trees and grass. You'll take a deep dive into the First Person Controller and its components including the CharacterController. As Will puts it, `If you know how something is put together then you're able to fix it when something goes wrong`.

Unity Game Development Essentials guides the learner through importing a 3D model into Unity with animations intact. You can then control the animations from the code. Speaking of code. You'll cover how to use Javascript to add functionality to your game from requiring the player to have met conditions to earn rewards to deciding if he'll be warm by bonfire for the night. Will explains it in such a way that developers coming from a Flash background will feel at home enough to reach for Control-Enter. Everything from making your variables accessible from the Unity workspace to manipulating your public static variables from other objects and updating your Heads-up display receives a generous yet concise coverage. Subtle reminders and reviews of key procedures help you walk away from the book with a habits that will make you productive and a foundation that prepares you for exploring the Unityverse.

One of my favorite parts of the book is the coverage of Collision detection. You first use colliders, with an initial examination of `isTrigger` then use Raycasting finally followed by a deeper discussion of the role of `isTrigger`. This is reviewed and summarized in the section of the book that made crystal clear the previously elusive decision-making algorithm between OnCollisionEnter(), OnTriggerEnter() and RayCasting.

My only complaint about this book is that I wish it could have gone on to some of the more advanced topics. I've read tutorials about physics and springs, and animation but the clarity that Unity Game Development Essentials provides is unmatched and I would love to be as comfortable in those advanced topics as this book has made me with the topics covered. On another note- the clarity of this book and the thorough coverage of a standard set of approaches sets expectations. As this book get more well deserved circulation asking a question that is explained within might earn someone a serving of RTFM. I wish I could have taken the 3 short days that it took me to read this book several months and many long fruitless and error filled nights ago. The first book in the Unity Game Development arena sets the bar high.

If you're a Flash developer interested in 3D in Actionscript you may also want to read Papervision3D Essentials by Paul Tondeur. It's a great book to ease the transition into 3D thinking and provides a lot of information that applies equally to 3D development in Unity.

DISCLOSURE: I Would like to thank Packt Publishing for providing me with a copy of Unity Game Development Essentials for the purpose of reviewing the book.Unity Game Development Essentials

Great reference
This book is exactly what I was looking for. There is a lot of reference material for Unity out there but to have a project-based book as well written and thought out as this is priceless.

Essential reading
Will Goldstone has a way of clarifying and simplifying concepts that at first seem obscure. He's a natural teacher and his book is a great primer for those serious about delving into the Unity game engine. And for those new to scripting, it will all begin to make sense after working through his exercises. There's a lot to learn to master Unity, but this is a great place to start. I keep wishing I had Will sitting by my side while I learn to use Unity, but in a way, I guess I do since his book is sitting next to my computer keyboard as I write this.

English: Meaning and Culture

English: Meaning and Culture
Anna Wierzbicka | 2006-04-27 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 368 | Social Sciences
It is widely accepted that English is the first truly global language and lingua franca. Its dominance has even led to its use and adaptation by local communities for their own purposes and needs. One might see English in this context as being simply a neutral, universal vehicle for the expression of local thoughts and ideas. In fact, English words and phrases have embedded in them a wealth of cultural baggage that is invisible to most native speakers. Anna Wierzbicka, a distinguished linguist known for her theories of semantics, has written the first book that connects the English language with what she terms "Anglo" culture.

Wierzbicka points out that language and culture are not just interconnected, but inseparable. This is evident to non-speakers trying to learn puzzling English expressions. She uses original research to investigate the "universe of meaning" within the English language (both grammar and vocabulary) and places it in historical and geographical perspective. For example, she looks at the history of the terms "right" and "wrong" and how with the influence of the Reformation "right" came to mean "correct." She examines the ideas of "fairness" and "reasonableness" and shows that, far from being cultural universals, they are in fact unique creations of modern English. This engrossing and fascinating work of scholarship should appeal not only to linguists and others concerned with language and culture, but the large group of scholars studying English and English as a second language.

Handbook of Inca Mythology (Handbooks of World Mythology)

Handbook of Inca Mythology (Handbooks of World Mythology)
Paul Steele | 2004-12-08 00:00:00 | ABC-CLIO | 319 | Incan
Reviews
This book is for a general audience. It is well written with only occasional use of perhaps overly technical words, for example, chthonic for underworld. It has a very good Index and a list of essential references, at least those that have been published in English. The glossary is also quite useful. In areas in which I am somewhat knowledgeable, I find a good summary is presented but with a minimum of references.

Missing is any reference to the common origin myth of the Maya (Popul Vuh) and Andeans (Huarichiri); likewise other shared myths such as the revolt of the objects are not mentioned. Further, the common substitution of body parts in Andean sculpture, such as at ChavĆn is not contrasted to the another region where it is well-known, China, as seen in dragons. The Maya case must represent diffusion for the degree of similarity in the quite unusual origin myth; that of China would at least apprise the reader that the Andean case is not unique.

In brief, the book provides a good introduction to Inca mythology and that treatment is extended to pre-Incan peoples in some instances, such as the Moche. It is pitched to somewhere between a popular readership and one useful as a good introductory treatment in a class room at a low grade level at a university. General readers will find the alienness of the myths, less tempered by the introduction of European ones than, say, in Central America, accessible, although the hand of the ethnographer Catherine J. Allen, listed as "with the assistance of") would have helped the readers understanding by supplying more contemporary examples.
Reviews

It is said that today there are no more Inca and little history left by them. Even if it is so, then Paul Steel's version of Inca Mythology inclines me to state that ancient Incas were great myth-makers and Andean culture has evolved its own unique mythology, offering a way, sometimes even provocative, to understand the world.

The Handbook of Inca Mythology contains a short description of ancient Inca and Andean Civilization as well as explains the reason why this culture has almost vanished under the influence of another, Spanish, culture. However, the only carriers of the Inca Mythology: Mythic Narratives, Themes and Concepts to which we refer today are the texts left by the chroniclers and Andean authors of the time of the Spanish invasion. Despite this limitation, the book offers an interesting interpretation of Incan myths, stories and beliefs, from which emerges a Mythology whose central concerns were similar to those of all the great civilizations: the creation of the world, death and rebirth, deities and heroes, and cults and shrines.

They seem extremely detailed and complex, with a large number of difficult names to read. However, the supporting examples portrayed in the book underline a logically striking way of seeing the world.

Unlike Western tradition, Andean stories and narratives depicting deities and cultural heroes from A to Z in graphic details would be a fascinatingly informative reading for those interested in the Inca Mythology.

However, The Handbook of Inca Mythology is let down by poor illustrations, and needs more, higher quality pictures and drawings in order to achieve its aims.

Conflicting Paradigms in Adult Literacy Education: In Quest of a U.S. Democratic Politics of Literacy

Conflicting Paradigms in Adult Literacy Education: In Quest of a U.S. Democratic Politics of Literacy
George Demetrion | 2004-11-30 00:00:00 | Routledge | 320 | Education
The book provides a historical overview of adult literacy theory, policy, practice, and research from the mid-1980s to the present. The main focus is a descriptive analysis of three distinctive schools of literacy: the Freirean-based participatory literacy movement grounded in oppositional politics and grass-roots community activism; the British-based New Literacy Studies that focuses on the ways in which diverse students utilize various literacy practices in their daily lives; and the U.S. federal government's focus on functional literacy linked to a 45-year policy emphasis on workforce readiness. These three schools of thought lead to substantially different implications over such critical areas as curriculum, assessment and accountability, and the socio-cultural role of literacy, policy, and political culture, which are discussed throughout the chapters of the book. This discussion includes a chapter on research traditions that closely parallels these perspectives on literacy education.

Demetrion argues that unless values grounded ultimately in political culture emerge, it is exceedingly unlikely that the adult literacy field will be able to move from its current marginalized status toward that of achieving the level of public and policy legitimacy many believe it needs for its long-term institutional flourishing. It is argued that any settlement of this issue must be accomplished in the field of practice rather than the ground of theory, even as theoretical insight can help to frame the issues.

Conflicting Paradigms in Adult Literacy Education: In Quest of a U.S. Democratic Politics of Literacy speaks to a wide audience, including not only the adult literacy community, but anyone interested in educational theory, practice, policy, research traditions, or political culture, and more fundamentally, in their intersection. Given the breadth of the topics covered, as well as the broad scope of the argument, the book is also meant for those who would like to gain a useful perspective on contemporary U.S. culture, through the window of these conflicting tensions within the field of adult literacy education.
Reviews
Demetrion offers us a genealogy of and emerging, conflicted and underfunded literacy field over the past 30 plus years. It is a Genealogy, rather than a history because Demetrion doesn't just offer a chronological list of events, but rather describes the contest between conflicting forces that shaped those events. Demetrion also relates conflicts of assessemnt and accountability, and an attempt by the "Equipped for the Future" project to create a middle ground view on assessemnt and pedagogy for the field. Finally Demetrion offers a possible vision for the field grounded in American democratic founding principles.

The book is a must for literacy students, workers, and anyone interested in becoming familiar with the field. It is not an easy book, requiring time and effort. But it is purposeful, well organized, thought provoking and a satisfying read. It is also instructive about pedagogy, assessment and it has a very strong Dewey inclination.
Reviews
This book details the rise of the adult literacy field--more money, more legislative interest, more advocacy, since A Nation At Risk. Demetrion sparks interest through inclusion of ongoing list serv debates from the National Institute for Literacy list servs. Those involved in this field (as I am) care passionately about giving a boost to low literate adults through classes and methods that increase their skills. Coming as it does during the culture wars, much of the debate is political--from the goals for adult literacy, to curriculum, to ultimate purposes: democratic access to printed documents and laws, or utilitarian focus on job skills. This book should appeal especially to those who look at the world through a political lens.
Reviews
The book was interesting and very helpful. He went into enough detail so that I understood the background and history so that his conclusions made a lot of sense.
Reviews
This historical review of adult education over the last 20 years provides a convincing argument for a stronger commitment to democracy in society-at-large. The audience is adult educators, educational policy makers, legislators, college students, and librarians.

Adult literacy has become hostage to a workforce model. Librarians who work with literacy providers may wonder why literacy is not a central policy focus. In George Demetrion's clear and insightful book, Conflicting Paradigms in Adult Literacy Education: In Quest of a U.S. Democratic Politics of Literacy, the workforce readiness model prevalent in the U.S. is explained. I have found this approach inimical, for the most part, to the librarians' commitment to human capabilities. Demetrion helps us all to learn that there are alternative models and gives us the intellectual tools to implement them-- if we have the will.

I will be using this text as recommended for my classes on adult lifelong learning.

Research and Technology Buildings: A Design Manual

Research and Technology Buildings: A Design Manual
Hardo Braun, Dieter Gromling | 2005-01-01 00:00:00 | Birkhauser Basel | 238 | Architecture
A handbook on planning and designing architecture for research and technology.

The significance of research and technology in today's economies is undisputed and continues to grow. Designing buildings to accommodate a range of functions, from laboratory experiments through prototype development to presentation and marketing is an architectural field of great potential. Commissioned by universities, public institutes and private companies, the challenge is to reconcile security and accessibility, laboratories equipped with sensitive, state-ofthe-art instruments and facilities for theoretical research.

Zoning, circulation and functional requirements, as well as the historical development and contemporary context of research building, are covered in the opening systematic chapters of this Design Manual. Following this some 70 built projects, largely from Europe, the USA and Asia, are analysed according to a variety of aspects such as urban integration and communications infrastructure.

The authors, both from the internationally renowned Max Planck Society, and contributors draw on their own substantial practical expe rience of planning and building research facilities.

CCSP CSI Exam Cram 2 (Exam Cram 642-541)

CCSP CSI Exam Cram 2 (Exam Cram 642-541)
Annlee Hines | 2003-11-25 00:00:00 | Que | 456 | CCSP

CCSP CSI Exam Cram 2 covers the fifth and final exam in the CCSP certification program. The SAFE Implementation is a very broad topic and the book's primary objective is to detail the proper scope for testing purposes. It accomplishes this through strict mapping of book content to the Cisco exam blueprint, actual configuration examples, and unparalleled analogies to help demystify complex technologies.

The CD includes PrepLogic Practice Tests, Preview Edition, which offers a complete PrepLogic Practice Test, a test engine with two study modes, Practice Test and Flash Review, full exam customization, and a detailed score report.
Reviews
Annlee Hines has a real knack for explaining complex concepts in an easy to understand fashion. The book is written in a great conversational style. Not only does it go into full detail about the material covered in the Cisco SAFE Blueprints, it also makes sure you understand the "why" behind the "what". Obviously she agrees with the concept that if you understand what's going on underneath the surface, not just memorize a bunch of facts, you're much more likely to be successful at the test (not to mention building real expertise). I highly recommend the book to anyone pursuing the individual test, the CCSP certification, or a better understanding of network security. If you absorb the information in this book, you may still struggle with the poorly written certification test, but it won't be due to a lack of knowledge or understanding of the material.
