Global Justice: A Cosmopolitan Account

Global Justice: A Cosmopolitan Account
Gillian Brock | 2009-03-15 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 288 | Philosophy
Gillian Brock develops a viable cosmopolitan model of global justice that takes seriously the equal moral worth of persons, yet leaves scope for defensible forms of nationalism and for other legitimate identifications and affiliations people have. Brock addresses two prominent kinds of skeptic about global justice: those who doubt its feasibility and those who believe that cosmopolitanism interferes illegitimately with the defensible scope of nationalism by undermining goods of national importance, such as authentic democracy or national self-determination. The model addresses concerns about implementation in the world, showing how we can move from theory to public policy that makes progress toward global justice. It also makes clear how legitimate forms of nationalism are compatible with commitments to global justice.

Global Justice is divided into three central parts. In the first, Brock defends a cosmopolitan model of global justice. In the second, which is largely concerned with public policy issues, she argues that there is much we can and should do toward achieving global justice. She addresses several pressing problems, discussing both theoretical and public policy issues involved with each. These include tackling global poverty, taxation reform, protection of basic liberties, humanitarian intervention, immigration, and problems associated with global economic arrangements. In the third part, she shows how the discussion of public policy issues can usefully inform our theorizing; in particular, it assists our thinking about the place of nationalism and equality in an account of global justice.

Anatomical Terms and their Derivation

Anatomical Terms and their Derivation
F. Peter Lisowski; Charles E. Oxnard | 2007-01-03 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing | 136 | Hospital Administration
Anatomical terms are the vocabulary of medicine. Anatomy began as a descriptive science in the days when Latin was the universal scientific language. Early anatomists described the structures they saw in that language, comparing them to common and familiar objects, or borrowing terms from the Greek and Arabic masters before them. In anatomic terminology, common Latin or Greek words are used as such for any part of the body for which the ancients had a name. For many other structures, scientific names have been invented either by using certain classical words which appear to be descriptive of the part concerned, or commonly, by combining Greek or Latin roots to form a new compound term. Memorization of such terms without understanding their meaning can lead to mental indigestion.

The Oxford History of World Cinema

The Oxford History of World Cinema
Geoffrey Nowell-Smith | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 856 | Movies
From its humble beginnings as a novelty in a handful of cities, cinema has risen to become a billion-dollar industry and the most spectacular and original contemporary art form. In The Oxford History of World Cinema, an international team of film historians traces the history of this enduringly popular entertainment medium. Covering all aspects of its development, stars, studios, and cultural impact, the book celebrates and chronicles over one hundred years of diverse achievement from westerns to the New Wave, from animation to the avant-garde, and from Hollywood to Hong Kong.

The Oxford History of World Cinema tells the story of the major inventions and developments in the cinema business, its institutions, genres, and personnel, and they outline the evolution of national cinemas round the world--the varied and distinctive film traditions that have developed alongside Hollywood. A unique aspect of the book are the special inset features on the film-makers and personalities--Garbo and Godard, Keaton and Kurosawa, Bugs Bunny and Bergman--who have had an enduring impact in popular memory and cinematic lore. With over 280 illustrations, a full bibliography, and an extensive index, this is the buff's ultimate guide to cinema worldwide.
Most histories of the international cinema focus on the careers of prominent directors. But the authors of The Oxford History of World Cinema set cinematic genres, trends, and national themes at the fore, composing a history of the cinema that is equally a history of our multifarious world culture. Still, in deference to the older historical style, the text of this hefty book is dotted with hundreds of minibiographies on individual filmmakers. The result of this hybrid approach is one of the most comprehensive film histories ever, allowing insight into its complex subject from a number of different perspectives.
Reviews
Did you know that spaghetti westerns gained popularity because of their Marxist sensibilities? Did you know that talent unions in Hollywood sprang up to resist the evil studio capitalists? McCarthyism anyone?

Ah yes, the repugnant leftist version of 20th century world history is firmly stamped on this film reference.
Reviews
They have reduced the price, and now the book is affordable. So take advantage of this. THE OXFORD HISTORY OF WORLD CINEMA introduces the readers to foreign films/international productions, and explains the different genres of pictures throughout the history of world cinema.

You should add this book to your library if you like cinema.
Reviews
This is an excellent reference source for the expert and lover of world cinema. It is complete and authoritative. All genres are well discussed, and the chronology is superb.
Reviews
This is recommendable guide for all those who assumed the commitment to know about the Cinema considered as an artistic discipline. Plenty of abundant information about the well different tendencies and filmmakers along a Century you will find important and decisive data for having a whole vision around the last of the Arts.

Totally recommended.
Reviews
This book includes a large collection of writings on various film movements and styles throughout history. It touches on cinema from all continents and includes sidebars focusing on important filmmakers and their contributions to film. The book is illustrated with many black and white stills with several pages of full-color photographs in the middle.

I would recommend this book to film scholars who are interested in film theory rather than film history or casual discussion. The writings included in this book are not for light reading; they are very heady and in-depth analyses of the art of film.

I consider myself well-viewed and an intelligent film student and am always willing for good discussion about film, but I was a little disappointed with this volume. I was expecting something a little more accessible and approachable and I found this book to be a little dry. It is definitely not for the casual film buff, but for someone interested in the mechanics and the psychology of film, so be aware of this.

I have also been looking at Robert Sklar's "A World History of Film" and, judging from the less intimidating approach used by that book, think that is more of what I was looking for in this.

Sell and Sell Short

Sell and Sell Short
Wiley | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Wiley | 250 | Management
The latest book from best-selling author Alexander Elder, Sell and Sell Short, provides important insights into the often-neglected topic of exiting a long position and shorting a weak market. Most traders spend the bulk of their time figuring out what to buy and spend hardly any time at all on when to sell. The truth is mismanaging the back end of trades can be the difference between winning and losing. Based on his long experience as a trader and trading educator, Dr. Elder provides a variety of selling techniques to preserve capital and take reasonable profits in both trending and non-trending markets and for both short-term and long-term positions. Moreover, Dr. Elder explains why traders and investors who limit themselves to long positions are conceding a big advantage to market professionals who are just as likely to go short as go long. Stocks tend to fall much faster than they rise, which means that big profits can be made quickly รข€“ if the right strategies are employed. Dr. Elder shows traders how to identify a market top, how to jump on a downtrend, and how to monitor short selling activity in order to better manage a short position. Ultimately, Dr. Elder says active traders should run their trading account much like a hedge fund, holding a changing mix of long and short positions as their view of the market changes. By embracing the advice in this important book, traders will be empowered to capitalize on the markets ups and downs and to move decisively in and out of positions so as to preserve capital and generate superior returns.

As with his other bestselling books, Dr. Elder has also created a valuable companion study guide, the Study Guide for Sell Short Study Guide, to help readers master and apply the material.

Language Test Construction and Evaluation (Cambridge Language Teaching Library)

Language Test Construction and Evaluation (Cambridge Language Teaching Library)
J. Charles Alderson,Caroline Clapham,Dianne Wall | 1995-05-26 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 324 | Education
Language Test Construction and Evaluation describes the process of language test construction clearly and comprehensively. Each chapter deals with one stage of the test construction process; from drafting initial test specifications, to reporting test scores, test validation and washback. In addition, current practice in the examining of English as a Foreign Language by different examining boards is reviewed in order to compare testing principles with present test practice. The focus of the book is on the practical: it does not assume a statistical background but explains and demystifies the procedures and concepts that are relevant to the construction and evaluation of language tests. Language Test Construction and Evaluation will provide an invaluable reference for anyone who wishes to understand how language tests are, and should be, constructed.
Reviews
After reading Language Testing (Oxford Introduction to Language Series), "Language Test Construction" formed a good further step into the theory that underlies various tests and considerations that go into construction.

As mentioned by a previous reviewer, this book is really not written for teachers who have to administer the tests themselves, (though some may be interested in having some knowledge of it anyway). It is more aimed at those who will be involved in the construction, testing and modifying of the tests themselves.

The book covers a lot of territory, though it does not get into overwhelming amounts of mind-boggling information. It draws some definite lines and sticks to brief overviews. However, should one wish to have some more boggling of the mind, the authors make suggestions aplenty about where to get it.

The topics that are covered in book include such things as exam testing, (reliability, validity and so on), statistical analysis of tests and results, the monitoring of test administrators, develop specfications and so on. While not overwhelming, some parts require some concentration, (well, they did with me), and may not really be all that light on the brain.

All things considered, I found this book a valuable read and an interesting insight into the murky world of language testing. It is well-organised, well-explained and realistic in what it attempts to achieve. I think it is a valuable resource for people wanting to get into the field of language testing, or wish to take their own testing to the next level.
Reviews
This book isn't for the teacher who'd like to make a weekly quiz for their class. This is intended for those who are interested in large scale institutional testing, like TOEFL. It doesn't give much information on writing test items, but covers how to write testing guidelines in great detail. It also covers how to evaluate items and tests, and it goes into detail about reliability and validity without getting to deep into statistics. In general, I found the style of this book to be very easy to read since it is written with test administrators in mind rather than test writting techies. If you're interested in the process of making large scale institutional tests, then this is a good book, but if you're looking for a book to help you write test items, then you should look elsewhere.

Currencies and Crises

Currencies and Crises
Paul Krugman | 1992-01-01 00:00:00 | The MIT Press | 538 | Finances and Money
Paul Krugman's first collection of essays, Rethinking International Trade, mounted a spirited assault on established trade theory and proposed an alternative approach to account for increasing returns and imperfect competition. Less theoretical and more embedded in real-world experience, this new collection revolves around Krugman's work on international monetary economics from the late 1970s to the present in an effort to make sense of a turbulent period that "involved one surprise after another, most of them unpleasant." The eleven essays cover such key areas as the role of exchange rates in balance-of-payments adjustment policy, the role of speculation in the functioning of exchange rate regimes, Third World debt, and the construction of an international monetary system. They are unified by the same basic methodology and style the construction of a small theoretical model in order to simplify or clarify a puzzling or difficult world monetary problem. Paul R. Krugman is Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of the Group of Thirty.

The Maritime Political Boundaries Of The World

The Maritime Political Boundaries Of The World
Victor Prescott,Clive H. Schofield,J. R. V. Prescott | 2005-01-30 00:00:00 | Brill Academic Publishers | 666 | International Law
This book addresses the often vexed question of national maritime claims and the delimitation of international maritime boundaries. The number of undelimited international maritime boundaries is much larger than the number of agreed lines. The two boundaries that define the marine domain of coastal states are examined. First the baselines along the coast may consist of low-water lines or straight lines or a combination of both. When straight lines are used they define the seaward limit of the state's internal waters. Second the outer limits of claims to territorial seas, contiguous zones and exclusive economic zones are measured from the baselines. All states will have to delimit at least one international boundary with a neighbouring state, whether adjacent or opposite. In confined seas no state can claim the full entitlement and must negotiate international boundaries with all neighbours. Many states bordering oceans can claim the full entitlement seawards, although they will need to delimit national boundaries with adjacent neighbours.

Reviews
I bought this book to get info on a couple of islands I had not visited before. I skimmed it on the plane to San Juan and it was very helpful in guiding me to a few new snorkel sites. I especially enjoyed Long Bay on the west coast of Antigua. The sand and water were as described in the book. I found the book quite accurate in its descriptions and would recommend it to others who are looking for short summaries of places in the Caribbean.
Reviews
Purchased both the Frommers and Fodors books (same title). The Fodors book seems to provide more information and in a much more readable format.
Reviews
After determining a travel destination, my first step is to consult the U.S. State Department's Consular Information Sheet on the country. My second is to get the latest Frommer's book. They have never failed me, I can always count on the advice, tips and information. Very well formatted, all the information you need is easy to find and always accurate.
Reviews
Of all the travel books, Frommer's are the best. The Caribbean 2008 is a solid book, the information is updated with a number of handy hints. The Caribbean, in general, offers fewer insights than larger countries one can travel so it does not get the highest rating.
Reviews
I find this one of the best books of the caribbean as I have traveled there before. It's a great help on seeing more of the islands, where to go and not spend a fortune. Frommer's is one of the best travel authorities around...

Writing Solid Code (Microsoft Programming Series)

Writing Solid Code (Microsoft Programming Series)
Steve Maguire | 1993-01-01 00:00:00 | Microsoft Press | 256 | Microsoft
"This book has useful things to say and an engaging way of saying them...a worthwhile addition to the shelves of any full-time programmer." - PC Week. Here, from a former Microsoft developer, are super secrets for developing bug-free C programs. Maguire provides examples of how bugs are caught at Microsoft (using actual case histories) and shows how readers can use these proven programming techniques to get products to market faster.
Any programmer worth their silicon knows that it is wiser to invest time preventing bugs from hatching than to try to exterminate them afterwards. And this is one of the best books for developing a proactive attitude towards electronic entomology. Follow Maguire's advice, and your testers, supervisors and customers will love you. Recommended.
Reviews
A classic that is dated in some respects (C language?) but still has much to offer. Should have a spot on every developer's and project manager's book shelf.

Deserves an update.
Reviews
"Writing Solid Code" contains a creative list of excellent ways to improve your software coding ability, with an emphasis on techniques that simplify and speed up the debugging process. The book is written toward the C language, but most of the advice can be generally applied to any language. I have both a Bachleors and a Masters Degree in Computer Science, and very few of these valuable techniques were mentioned anywhere in my undergraduate or graduate degree courses.

I strongly disagree with boastful reviewers who poo-poo the advice as "obvious." Most good advice is obvious once you have heard it. I highly doubt that these reviewers knew all or even most of these tricks before reading, or could enunciate supporting reasons for doing each. Likewise, sure, a rare few pieces of advice are outdated, and you probably hate Microsoft. So what? Avoiding this book for those reasons is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater -- short sighted.

This is an excellent book. I highly recommend it.
Reviews
Certainly no book can cover all the best practices to write best code but this book has done good attempt. Must read for all the fresh grads and developers before they start writing production code!
Reviews
This book quickly reminded me that the "old school" rules to software development will always apply, no matter how many new labels you put on it (e.g. Agile). It was recommended to me by a college professor aside from the regular classroom reading we had to complete. And I was more than happy I purchased it and added it to my bookshelf.
Reviews
This book has been recently recommended to me by Amazon based on my previous purchase habits and I decided to go take a look at its description. At first, I was little bit skeptic about the value of a book published in 1993 and prepared with Word for Windows 2.0 because software programming has changed a lot since then! However, it was a very low risk purchase because of its very low price tag so I decided to give it a try and I have been pleasantly surprised!

This book is the proof that that there are few things in programming that are timeless. Errors of the past still occur today. The programming language used for the examples is C but what is taught is also applicable to C++ programming as well. Topics discussed in the book are: assertions, integrity checks, stepping through code with a debugger, how to not design interfaces that are error prone, avoid language features that are error prone and finally the author conclude his book by describing the attitude that a programmer should have. Among other things, a programmer should prioritize safe code before micro-optimizations. All these concepts are written in a style easy to understand filled with anecdotes that make this book a pleasant read.

To conclude, I have not been blown away by the content of this book but I have learn one thing or two and I am glad that I have read it especially with its very low price tag.

Armed Servants: Agency, Oversight, and Civil-Military Relations

Armed Servants: Agency, Oversight, and Civil-Military Relations
Peter D. Feaver | 2005-03-15 00:00:00 | Harvard University Press | 400 | Arms Control

How do civilians control the military? In the wake of September 11, the renewed presence of national security in everyday life has made this question all the more pressing. In this book, Peter Feaver proposes an ambitious new theory that treats civil-military relations as a principal-agent relationship, with the civilian executive monitoring the actions of military agents, the "armed servants" of the nation-state. Military obedience is not automatic but depends on strategic calculations of whether civilians will catch and punish misbehavior.

This model challenges Samuel Huntington's professionalism-based model of civil-military relations, and provides an innovative way of making sense of the U.S. Cold War and post-Cold War experience--especially the distinctively stormy civil-military relations of the Clinton era. In the decade after the Cold War ended, civilians and the military had a variety of run-ins over whether and how to use military force. These episodes, as interpreted by agency theory, contradict the conventional wisdom that civil-military relations matter only if there is risk of a coup. On the contrary, military professionalism does not by itself ensure unchallenged civilian authority. As Feaver argues, agency theory offers the best foundation for thinking about relations between military and civilian leaders, now and in the future.

Stopping Power: Why 70 Million Americans Own Guns

Stopping Power: Why 70 Million Americans Own Guns
J. Neil Schulman,Gary Kleck | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Pulpless.com | 324 | Social Policy
Did you know that every 13 seconds one of America's 70 million gun owners uses a firearm in defense against a criminal? That American women use handguns 416 times a day in defense against rapists, which is a dozen times more often than rapists use a gun? That a gun kept in the home for protection is 216 times as likely to be used in defense against a criminal than it is to cause the death of an innocent victim in that household?

These are just a few of the surprises this book has in store for anyone whose belief in gun control is based on TV news or popular magazines.

Award-winning novelist, screenwriter, and journalist, J. Neil Schulman, challenges the misinformation that pundits ranging from network anchors to ill-informed doctors are promoting about guns.

Especially for the reader who doesn't own a gun and has never even considered buying one, Stopping Power should be an eye-opener.
Reviews
This book has been quoted in many places including Congressional hearings, federal appellate-court briefs, the Internet, and other publications including national magazines and Washington think-tank white-papers. It's wonderful to have at your fingertips so much information covering so many aspects of firearms ownership, self defense, and gun-control laws.

You get a real insight into the prejudiced and corrupt workings of the media and government in their unceasing attempt to diminish your natural right of self-defense. Very few books have provided a step-by-step analysis of the manipulation necessary to convince the public to support the proven counterproductive gun-restriction agenda.

Unlike many academic treatises on this subject, Stopping Power has many original insights, frequent moments of real humor, and avoids focusing on some narrow aspect of the topic, such as merely the crime statistics or legal arguments. One of the best things about the book is that the author doesn't rely on debating straw men but instead goes into the real world--ACLU pamphlets, TV Public Service Announcements, and even on-line chat rooms--to bring out the actual concerns and thought processes of those who are afraid to allow gun ownership. Then the author uses the best available technical expertise, criminology, and legal scholarship to answer these concerns--concisely, wittily, and decisively.

The Center for the Study of Crime recommends this as one of the best books in the field and it is without doubt the most entertaining.
Reviews
It's difficult to understand the enthusiasm other reviewers feel for this book. While I am a staunch advocate of Second Amendment rights, "Stopping Power" adds little to the debate. The book contains very little material written orginally for this edition; rather, it's a compilation of various unpleasant e-mail threads and letters to the editor. It seriously aggravated me to have paid for a book containing verbatim transcripts of junk I could have read for free on the Internet. Mr. Schulman is bright and makes some strong arguments, but overall the work is shoddy -- petulant, unscholarly, and devoid of editing.

Pass on this one.
Reviews
I have studied writings and listened to many arguments on the Second Amendment, its true meaning and intent by our constitutional framers. This book is the best collection of "fact-based" pro-gun arguements that will convince the most staunch gun-control advocate of the dangers in that folly. It is a must read for those seeking the truth about our Second Amendment and the true reason thereof. Mr. Schulman's style of writing, his sincerity and belief in freedom lends itself to a truly great read. If you want to inform your anti-gun friends of the true dangers of "gun control", THIS BOOK IS A MUST!
Reviews
An award-winning science fiction writer, Schulman has penned a well-written, forcefully argued explanation of why gun ownership by good people enhances public safety. The book is a collection of essays that Schulman has written over the last several years. Some of the essays were first printed in the Los Angeles Times, while others have shown up on computer bulletin boards and similar places. Many of the essays deal with the meaning of the Second Amendment, and with why ordinary folks should be allowed to carry a gun for protection. Schulman persuasively shows that such laws--rather than turning a state into "the wild west"--actually enhance the safety of everyone--including people who don't choose to carry a gun. Schulman's writing style is clear, and fun to read. The straight-forward writing and the short chapters make Stopping Power is a good first book for people who want to learn more about the gun issue. Stopping Power is also an excellent choice for your friends who are anti-gun, but who have enough intellectual curiousity to want to check out the argument in favor of gun ownership. By the time they're finished with Stopping Power, they may well have decided to switch sides in the gun control struggle. Review by Dave Kopel, Independence Institute, http://i2i.org.

Isochronous Systems

Isochronous Systems
Francesco Calogero | 2008-04-15 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 256 | Astronomy
A dynamical system is called isochronous if it features in its phase space an open, fully-dimensional region where all its solutions are periodic in all its degrees of freedom with the same, fixed period. Recently a simple transformation has been introduced, applicable to quite a large class of dynamical systems, that yields autonomous systems which are isochronous. This justifies the notion that isochronous systems are not rare.

In this book the procedure to manufacture isochronous systems is reviewed, and many examples of such systems are provided. Examples include many-body problems characterized by Newtonian equations of motion in spaces of one or more dimensions, Hamiltonian systems, and also nonlinear evolution equations (PDEs).

The book shall be of interest to students and researchers working on dynamical systems, including integrable and nonintegrable models, with a finite or infinite number of degrees of freedom. It might be used as a basic textbook, or as backup material for an undergraduate or graduate course.

Good Americans: Italian and Jewish Immigrants During the First World War

Good Americans: Italian and Jewish Immigrants During the First World War
Christopher M. Sterba | 2003-03-27 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 288 | 20th Century
Among the Americans who joined the ranks of the Doughboys fighting World War I were thousands of America's newest residents. Good Americans examines the contributions of Italian and Jewish immigrants, both on the homefront and overseas, in the Great War. While residing in strong, insular communities, both groups faced a barrage of demands to participate in a conflict that had been raging in their home countries for nearly three years. Italians and Jews ""did their bit"" in relief, recruitment, conservation, and war bond campaigns, while immigrants and second-generation ethnic soldiers fought on the Western front. Within a year of the Armistice, they found themselves redefined as foreigners and perceived as a major threat to American life, rather than remembered as participants in its defense. Wartime experiences, Christopher Sterba argues, served to deeply politicize first and second generation immigrants, greatly accelerating their transformation from relatively powerless newcomers to a major political force in the United States during the New Deal and beyond.
