Mathematical Relationships In Education

Mathematical Relationships In Education
Laura Black | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | | 266 | Education
This book is the result of a seminar series entitled Mathematical Relationships: Identities and Participation held in the UK between September 2006 and July 2007. The seminars were funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the British Educational Research Association. We organised them along with Melissa Rodd and Margaret Brown and spent a year touring the UK, starting in London, then heading to Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Shef? eld, before returning to London for the ? nal seminar. These six seminars brought together a number of researchers and practitioners working in the areas of mathematics education and in edu-cation and identity to discuss how we can better understand patterns of participation in mathematics. This book is an edited collection mostly of the papers presented at those seminars, with additional contributions from other international scholars.

Reviews
One of the best books I have read for my research on child sexuality. Yates writes not from theory but from a large experience as child psychologist. Her views are very progressive and she favors a totally permissive approach for parents when taking care of helping their child(ren) to develop a healthy and pleasurable sexual life.

Murder Has a Sweet Tooth

Murder Has a Sweet Tooth
Miranda Bliss | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Berkley | 256 | Fiction Other
With Murder Has a Sweet Tooth, Annie prides herself as an investigator who has already solved 4 crimes and who everyone turns to when Alex is arrested. For that alone I love this book. Throw in Eve who wants to have her dog as ring boy and wants to wear a dress flashier than a Vegas costume and you have a perfectly hilarious cozy mystery where you're guaranteed that Annie is going to get her man (or woman), save Alex and pull off the perfect wedding to the man of her dreams. I highly recommend this series for anyone who loves cozy mysteries.

Space 2030: Exploring the Future of Space Applications (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development)

Space 2030: Exploring the Future of Space Applications (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development)
OECD Publishing | 2004-05-10 00:00:00 | Org. for Economic Cooperation & Development | 242 | Social Sciences
Ever since the launching of Sputnik in 1957, media attention has focused almost exclusively on spectacular space missions such as the landing of Apollo on the Moon in 1969 or, more recently, the stunning pictures transmitted from Mars by Mars Pathfinder in 1997 and Spirit in 2004. However, space actors have also faced their fair share of setbacks, including dramatic failures such as the Columbia tragedy, extravagant cost overruns, grossly unfulfilled promises and painful reductions in public support to space ventures.

But space is more than a showroom where nations can display their technological proficiency. Over the years, advances in space technologies have led to the development of increasingly sophisticated military and civil space assets offering a growing number of space-based services, ranging from communication, remote sensing and earth observation services to navigation and location-based services. While military space assets have gained strategic prominence in the arsenals of space-faring nations, the services provided by civil space assets are having an increasing impact on our daily life, even if we are not always aware of it.

Where is the space sector heading now? What are the obstacles to its further development? What are its future prospects? What are the applications that are likely to be successful in the future?

To answer these questions, this report adopted a scenario-based approach to explore the future evolution of major components of the space sector (military space, civil space, commercial space) over the next thirty years, taking into account four major factors of change: geopolitical developments, socio-economic developments, energy and the environment, and technology. This provides the basis for assessing the prospects of a number of space applications, taking into account expected progress in technologies such as microelectronics, nanotechnology or robotics, as well as space technologies.

Research on Community-Based Mental Health Services for Children and Adolescents, Volume 14 (Research in Community and Mental Health)

Research on Community-Based Mental Health Services for Children and Adolescents, Volume 14 (Research in Community and Mental Health)
William H. Fisher | 2007-01-11 00:00:00 | JAI Press | 250 | Mental Health
Research on mental health services for children and adolescents has become a vibrant subspecialty within the larger field of mental health services research. This research program experienced a somewhat later start than that focusing on adults, and faces a set of issues and challenges that are both different and in many ways more complex.

The served population itself is bounded by infancy and the late teen years, and includes all age groups in between. This developmental spectrum naturally necessitates there being a correspondingly diverse array of mental health services. The disorders experienced by children and adolescents can become apparent in the family, the school, the pediatrician's office, the social welfare agency or the courts, and the settings in which services may be provided can include any or all of these, as well as numerous others. Indeed, it has become standard practice in discussing mental health service delivery for this population to emphasize "systems of care," although identifying the outlines and boundaries of such systems can itself be a daunting task.

The chapters in this volume singly and collectively reflect the richness and complexity of research in this burgeoning and vitally important area and also highlight the novel conceptual and methodological approaches researchers in this field are taking in tackling its most critical issues.

Data Network Design

Data Network Design
Darren L. Spohn | 1997-01-15 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill Companies | 983 | Certification Central
The technologies and procedures of data network design in a single bestselling volume now in an updated edition. Chronologically organized, abudndantly illustrated, and filled with technical references for further study, this is the ideal blueprint for network designers who want to achieve an effective design plan. Includes coverage of ATM, Frame Relay, SONET, and X.25 Packet Switching.
Reviews
It is obvious that previous reviews have been made twice to
reduce average rating on purpose. However it doesn't change
the reality that this is a very good book. It covers networking
technologies very well and it is a well written informative book.
It made 3 editions after all. I warmly recommend this book. It
is a good reference to keep in your technical library.

This is one of the worst books I've read! It was poorly written, (lot's of type-o's). I also did not like the authors writting style. (he jumps around topics too much). I have read a lot of IT Books this last year and a half(over 50) and this is the first book I came across that I had to write a review about. I caution you if thinking about buying this book. The book I am reading now is Data Network Design 2nd Edition (reprint by Mcgraw-Hill copyright 2000 and it says it contains select material from this book) I don't know maybe McGraw-Hill screwed it up royally because the other reviews I've read are all high marks.
Reviews
As a network architect (12yrs), I have designed many large networks for major banks and Wall St firms. When it comes to technology design of networks, this book is the bible. (I own two copies, one for work and one for home, and I own two copies of the first edition, which was hardcover. The second edition is better, but the first I still refer to, sometimes just to review what has changed in the standards between ed. 1 and ed 2.

If you need to honstly design networks and do capacity planning with real capacity calculations based on queuing theory, and you were never great with queuing theory, and don't know who Klinerock is (The father of queuing theory), this book gives you the key modling methods used for each type of network (Cell, Frame, voice (for convergence)), and shows you how to plug in the numbers to get the information you need to size a network properly.

The first edition spends a lot of time on Frame Relay, and less time on ATM. The second edition spends a little less on Frame Relay and more on ATM. The SONET section is almost unchanged, but he found a way to make some changes that make it better. SONET is also pointed out as the NA standard, and that everyone else in the world uses SDH. When you are done with the chapter you know the difference, and why it is significant. It does a great job of pointing out that SONET is not a network, only a transport method, like pavement is not a transport vehical only a road by which transport vehicals can get people to their destinations.

If you can only have one network design book on your desk, and you are tasked with the function of designing or understanding professional network designs, this is the book.

While I realize there are a lot of people that design and build networks by empirical means, and they would get real uncomfortable if you asked them if they used a M/M/1, M/G/1, or M/D/1 model to base your capacity planning for QOS/COS on... It is in this book. (Oh yea... the proofs and theory aren't there so it won't give you bad flash-backs to college (:-)) But they do show the different types of models used (4), explain the key formulas, and use an example. You can use this to determine which model fits the network you need to build (from the core to the access... thats in there too!), and then plug in the numbers to the example to define your capacities. So you know your network can do the job, or if you have a weak spot, what the parameters of that weak spot are ahead of time to assure a CUA. (Cover your A**).

I am sorry it is out of print. I lent a copy, and of course never got it back. Now I am down to one!
Reviews
This was very comprehensive book covering how the X.25, packet switching, Frame Relay, SMDS, and ATM data technologies work. It also does a good job of explaining how the various protocols interoperate by encapsulating packets, cells, or frames of data into their own packet, cell or frame formats. Very readable. The book has lots of diagrams and is not too technical. I learned a lot from the book and would recommend it to anyone seeking an in-depth overview of data communications systems.

This book did not really teach me how to design data networks, but I feel I have a much better understanding of how data networks function since reading this book.

My only complaint with the book is the excessive use of acronyms. While the acronyms are listed in the back of the book in a table, their pervasive use in the text was annoying and made it harder to understand. A minor irritant, at worst.

My best testament to the book is that I lost my original copy and was so dismayed by the prospect of not finishing it that I spent another $65 to buy a second copy!

Linear Algebra, 3rd Edition

Linear Algebra (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics)
By Serge Lang

* Publisher: Springer
* Number Of Pages: 296
* Publication Date: 2004-03-09
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0387964126
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780387964126

Product Description:

"Linear Algebra" is intended for a one-term course at the junior or senior level. It begins with an exposition of the basic theory of vector spaces and proceeds to explain the fundamental structure theorem for linear maps, including eigenvectors and eigenvalues, quadratic and hermitian forms, diagnolization of symmetric, hermitian, and unitary linear maps and matrices, triangulation, and Jordan canonical form. The book also includes a useful chapter on convex sets and the finite-dimensional Krein-Milman theorem. The presentation is aimed at the student who has already had some exposure to the elementary theory of matrices, determinants and linear maps. However the book is logically self-contained. In this new edition, many parts of the book have been rewritten and reorganized, and new exercises have been added.

Summary: Strong concise book for linear algebra over the Complex numbers
Rating: 5

Lang's Linear Algebra is one of my favorite undergraduate math books. The style is concise and clear, and the approach is rather rigorous. I found the chapters on polynomials particularly interesting.

Minor complaints: (1) I would rather Lang have done the book over general (e.g. finite) fields rather than sticking with subfields of the complex numbers. That way it would be more clear which results truly rely on results in Complex analysis and which rely only on the fact that the every n-degree polynomial over the complex numbers has n roots. (2) A couple more examples involving function vector spaces would have been interesting. Although all-in-all he strikes a great balance for as short a book as this is.

Summary: Difficult for undergrads
Rating: 4

I think the term "undergraduate" is a bit misleading. I think you would have had to have at least one course in linear algebra and abtract algebra to truly appreciate this book. I read it over a summer (as a master's student who lacked any coursework in linear algebra) - kind of as an independent project, and I found it to be very easy to understand. Then again, I had just taken abstract algebra. There were a couple parts that I found challenging though. I love it when he says that the proof or rest of the proof is "trivial" and unnecessary to write. I have heard he does this in many of his books. Overall great book if you have some background.

Summary: Solid piece of work
Rating: 5

Like in other math books by Lang, the theory of Linear Algebra is presented in an axiomatic way, the best way of presenting since The Elements of Euclid. The way in which the theory is presented adds to the beauty. I have read this book as a refresher for Linear Algebra, about 20 years after the completion of a master's degree in an exact science. For me the level was perfect. If you have no experience with Linear Algebra beyond high school, you must first read "Introduction to Linear Algebra" by Lang or some other introductory course. The book under review does not talk about basics like Gauss-elimination. I have seen remarkably few typos. Some cross-references to theorems in other chapters were wrong, though. In all: a very good book and well worth the money.

Summary: Serge Lang is a Very Gifted Expositor
Rating: 5

Serge Lang is a very gifted expositor. I've read the reviews saying that his books are notorious for their "dryness". At least as concerns this book - that couldn't be less true.

This book is not only methodical and well written, it is a joy. Every section is a well rounded presentation: Lang clearly and effectively introduces new concepts and patiently develops even the most basic results. But Lang achieves much more: his illuminating examples are stepping stones to a more abstract understanding.

Enjoying this book is like enjoying anything of high quality and craftsmanship. Admittedly, that is not always for everyone to enjoy.

Summary: This Book Is Almost Excellent
Rating: 4

I had this book as the text for my second course in Abstract Algebra, having already taken some elementary Linear Algebra course. I might argue that this is not the best subject for such a course, yet this is very irrelevant here.

All through the class I struggled to understand concepts. I did not. That was not due to the book since I did not even bother opening it. After finishing the course, I realized that the material of this book is of the most importance to anyone planning on continuing his/her grad degree in math, so I decided to read the book. The mission was accomplished in a matter of a couple of weeks.

I do not claim that this is the easiest book to understand the material. In fact, Lang's books are remarked for their dryness. Motivation is almost nonextant. If you, however, have a fairly good background in Linear Algebra (something like the material of Anton's "Elementary Linear Algebra" or the like) and Abstract Algebra (an excellent introduction can be sought in Herstein's "Abstract Algebra") you would much benefit from this book.

The book is a very good book for a second course in linear algebra, that is, it is not a good book for those who had no experience with matrix theory before. The reason is that the book does not mention anything about Gaussian elimination and treats the solutions of n equations in m unknowns using dimension theorems, which is not the standard way of proving existence of such solutions. One more thing is that it does not talk about elementary matrices (one can interpret column or row operations by multiplication of elementary matrices to the right or left). I am not saying the book
is bad, I am saying it is not the right book for a beginner.

The book introduces the basic notions of vector spaces, linear mappings, matrices scalar products, determinants, and eigenvalues and spaces. It then moves to unitary, symmetric, and Hermitian operators and explores their Eigenvalues. Polynomials have a whole chapter followed by triangulation of a linear map. The book concludes with applications of Linear algebra to convex geometry.

I might disagree with the definition of the determinant the author offers, but I would have to admit that his approach is the traditional one.

The subjects of the books must be mastered (or at least absorbed) by anyone who wants to go to analysis (Functional analysis to be precise), Algebra, Geometry, and Differential Equations. To ensure this you should do almost all the exercises of the book since they are so excellent and help a lot in understanding the material presented.

Time and Time Again: Reports from a Boundary of the Universe (Supplements to the Study of Time)

Time and Time Again: Reports from a Boundary of the Universe (Supplements to the Study of Time)
J. T. Fraser | 2007-04-01 00:00:00 | Brill Academic Publishers | 433 | Social Sciences
This work represents a guided tour to the interdisciplinary, integrated study of time. Through twenty-two connected essays, selected from the author's extensive writings, "Time and Time Again" advances new insights into understanding the nature of time seen through philosophy, the arts and letters, the sciences of matter, life, mind and society. Traditionally, attitudes to future, past, and present remained distinct for different cultures. But upon the globalizing earth, all cultural regions are now in instant by instant communication. There is a consequent turmoil about individual and collective identities and about value judgements, in all of which attitudes to time play crucial roles. The book explores this turmoil and, through its references, it also serves as a guide to the broadly spread literature about time.
Reviews
"Time and Time Again: Reports from a Boundary of the Universe" deserves to be regarded as a canonical work for humankind's journey into the 21st century. I first discovered Julius Thomas Fraser through "Time, Passion and Knowledge" in the 1980's and have been amazed by the continuing depth and breadth of his thinking. Fraser was born in 1923 in Hungary and emigrated to the US in 1946. Let us hope that his works will reach a broader audience. The world sorely needs J. T. Fraser : "History is now at all gates, everywhere and all the time. I do not mean agreement on the dates of one or other king. I mean an agreement about the origin and evolution of man, the origin and evolution of the universe."

In my view Fraser takes the standard raised by luminaries such as Kant, Goethe and Karl Popper and passes it to us as a challenge to seek truth and nothing less while at the same time recognising that absolutes do not await us. Rather like Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game master, Julius Thomas Fraser plays with the Study of Time with intellectual rigor and lyrical beauty. Those who join his intellectual journey will be better for it. We need more men like Fraser and fewer polemicists whether they be atheists or religious.

This book is beautifully bound with a cover of Caspar David Friedrich's "Wanderer Overlooking a Sea of Fog". We are wanderers overlooking a sea of fog. Thinkers like Fraser can take us by the hand. This book has had pride of place in my library, alongside his other works.

Superconductivity, Superfluids, and Condensates
| 2004-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 200 | Physics
Superconductivity, provides a basic introduction to one of the most innovative areas in condensed matter physics today. This book includes ample tutorial material, including illustrations, chapter summaries, graded problem sets, and concise examples. This book is part of the Oxford Master Series in Condensed Matter Physics.

Review
"Annett (physics, University of Bristol) covers three main strands in condensed matter physics in this text for senior undergraduate and graduate students. Subjects are developed in a way which gradually builds up key concepts and the necessary mathematical machinery. The book begins with a review of basics of the Bose-Einstein ideal gas before going into techniques of magnetic trapping and cooling of atoms and the discovery of Bose-Einstein condensates in dilute atomic gases. The physical phenomena of superfluidity are then introduced, and the theory of superconductivity is developed in stages, starting with simpler theories and then developing the mathematical concepts of a quantum coherent state. --SciTech Book News

Melancholic Freedom Agency and the Spirit of Politics

Melancholic Freedom Agency and the Spirit of Politics
David Kyuman Kim | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press | 208 | Philosophy
Why does agency -- the capacity to make choices and to act in the world -- matter to us? Why is it meaningful that our intentions have effects in the world, that they reflect our sense of identity, that they embody what we value? What kinds of motivations are available for political agency and judgment in an age that lacks the enthusiasm associated with the great emancipatory movements for civil rights and gender equality? What are the conditions for the possibility of being an effective agent when the meaning of democracy has become less transparent? David Kyuman Kim addresses these crucial questions by uncovering the political, moral, philosophical, and religious dimensions of human agency.

Kim treats agency as a form of religious experience that reflects implicit and explicit notions of the good. Of particular concern are the moral, political, and religious motivations that underpin an understanding of agency as meaningful action. Through critical engagement with the work of theorists such as Judith Butler, Charles Taylor, and Stanley Cavell, Kim argues that late modern and postmodern agency is found most effectively at work in what he calls "projects of regenerating agency" or critical and strategic responses to loss. Agency as melancholic freedom begins and endures, Kim maintains, through the moral and psychic losses associated with a broad range of experiences, including the moral identities shaped by secularized modernity and the multifold forms of alienation experienced by those who suffer the indignities of racial, gender, class, and sexuality discrimination and oppression. Kim calls for renewing the sense of urgency in our political and moral engagements by seeing agency as a vocation, where the aspiration for self-transformation and the human need for hope are fundamental concerns.

Complete Course in Astrobiology

Complete Course in Astrobiology
Gerda Horneck, Petra Rettberg | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co KGaA | 436 | Biology
Astrobiology is a relatively new research area that addresses questions that have intrigued humans for a long time: â€Å“How did life originate?” â€Å“Are we alone in the Universe?” â€Å“What is the future of life on Earth and in the Universe?” These questions are jointly tackled by scientists converging from widely different fields, reaching from astrophysics to molecular biology and from planetology to ecology, among others. Whereas classical biological research has concentrated on the only example of â€Å“life” so far known – life on Earth – astrobiology extends the boundaries of biological investigations beyond the Earth to other planets, comets, meteorites, and space at large. Focal points are the different steps of the evolutionary pathways through cosmic history that may be related to the origin, evolution, and distribution of life. In the interstellar medium, as well as in comets and meteorites, complex organics are detected in huge reservoirs that eventually may provide the chemical ingredients for life.

A Cycle of Outrage: America's Reaction to the Juvenile Delinquent in the 1950s

A Cycle of Outrage: America's Reaction to the Juvenile Delinquent in the 1950s
James Gilbert | 1988-10-13 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 272 | 20th Century
The youth culture is on everyone's lips today, as pressures build to ban controversial song lyrics, reintroduce school prayer, and prohibit teenagers' access to contraceptives. It's not the first time Americans have been outraged over the "seuction of the innocent."

When James Dean and Marlon Brando donned their motorcycle jackets and adopted alienated poses in Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden, and The Wild One, in the 1950's, so did countless numbers of American teenagers. Or so it seemed to their parents. American teenagers were looking and acting like juvenile delinquents. By mid-decade, the nation had reached a pitch of near obsession with the harmful effects of film, radio, comic books, and television on American youth. Experts across the land denounced mass culture as depriving young people of their innocence and weakening their parents' hold on them. By the end of the decade, the obsession had ended, although the actual numbers of juvenile delinquents had apparently risen.

A Cycle of Outrage explores the 1950's debate over the media and juvenile delinquency among parents, professionals, and the creators of mass culture themselves. In this groundbreaking study, James Gilbert sees the attempt to blame the media as part of a larger reaction of discomfort echoed in recent debates over censorship. The book examines how the central phenomena of the 1950's--the development of youth culture and the rise of a mass media society--became intertwined and confused and argues that young people ceased to be a threat as they were recognized to be a market.

,bout the Author:

Reviews
I was doing a report based upon the film "Rebel Without A Cause" for an Art History class, and needed a book that discussed the causes and problems of the juvenile delinquency issues in the 1950s. This book was unbelievable in the amount of credible information it had discussing this issue. Highly recommended!

Local Fields (London Mathematical Society Student Texts)

Local Fields (London Mathematical Society Student Texts)
J. W. S. Cassels | 1986-08-29 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 376 | Mathematics
The p-adic numbers, the earliest of local fields, were introduced by Hensel some 70 years ago as a natural tool in algebra number theory. Today the use of this and other local fields pervades much of mathematics, yet these simple and natural concepts, which often provide remarkably easy solutions to complex problems, are not as familiar as they should be. This book, based on postgraduate lectures at Cambridge, is meant to rectify this situation by providing a fairly elementary and self-contained introduction to local fields. After a general introduction, attention centres on the p-adic numbers and their use in number theory. There follow chapters on algebraic number theory, diophantine equations and on the analysis of a p-adic variable. This book will appeal to undergraduates, and even amateurs, interested in number theory, as well as to graduate students.

Inositol Phospholipid Metabolism and Phosphatidyl Inositol Kinases (Laboratory Techniques in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology)

Inositol Phospholipid Metabolism and Phosphatidyl Inositol Kinases (Laboratory Techniques in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology)
A. Kuksis | 2003-09-26 00:00:00 | Elsevier Science | 1000 | Biochemistry
This book offers a wide ranging and review of cutting edge developments along with tried and tested methods for isolation, resolution and quantification of inositol phospholipids and inositol polyphosphates in both cells and tissues. It includes detailed and rigorous methodology for identification of molecular species of inositol phospholipids, including their phosphates and glycans, with numerous examples of specific applications.

Wherever available, both chromatographic and mass spectrometric
evidence is presented for specific phospholipid involvement in the biochemical transformations accompanying metabolic signalling events and, where possible, controversies have been resolved on basis of analytical ambiguity. The review of the lipid
analyses extends to products of phosphatidylinositol kinases, phosphatases and lipases.

A general review chapter is included on metabolic signalling with special emphasis on the lipid products of 3-kinases. In view of the general lack of commercially available standards for inositol phospholipids and inositol phosphates, the book concludes with a chapter on the preparation and collection of chromatographic and mass spectrometric proof of their purity and identity.

This book complements recent books and reviews on the mechanisms metabolic signalling, receptor binding and the polypeptide structure of the proteins involved in the various signalling pathways. It also complements those texts that deal exclusively with the chemical synthesis of the phosphatidylinositols and their polyphosphates and glycans.

Birational Geometry of Algebraic Varieties (Cambridge Tracts in Mathematics)

Birational Geometry of Algebraic Varieties (Cambridge Tracts in Mathematics)
Janos Kollár,Shigefumi Mori | 1998-10-28 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 264 | Mathematics
One of the major discoveries of the past two decades in algebraic geometry is the realization that the theory of minimal models of surfaces can be generalized to higher dimensional varieties. This generalization, called the minimal model program, or Mori's program, has developed into a powerful tool with applications to diverse questions in algebraic geometry and beyond. This book provides the first comprehensive introduction to the circle of ideas developed around the program, the prerequisites being only a basic knowledge of algebraic geometry. It will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers working in algebraic geometry and related fields.
Reviews
This book provides a neat introduction to (basically) what happened in birational geometry in the '80s. It contains a description of so-called minimal model program which deals which birational classification of complex algebraic varieties. Some level of familiarity with standard algebraic geometry (like what're written in Hartshorne's famous book) is required to be able to read this book. All the important results in MMP were established in this book except the (general) existence of flips in 3 dimension, which doesn't appear anywhere else but the original research articles. One other thing that's missing in this book is discussions of complex analytic methods, which are proved to be extremely useful in dealing with some problems (for example, Fujita conjecture, invariance of plurigenera, so on...).
In conclusion, this is THE must-read book for people who would like to know MMP. It may not be very reader-friendly, but it's a book that you must read if you want to study birational geometry.

Her Daughter's Dream

Her Daughter's Dream
Francine Rivers | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Tyndale House Publishers | 592 | Fiction Other
Overall, I would call the two books in this series as an epic. It spans four generations of this family and shows how the relationship between mother and daughter was broken and repaired. The family is dysfunctional, to say the least, and things weren't always happy but under it all they loved each other. The story is also a really interesting look into American history. The first book looked at American history from an immigrant and first generation children's point of view. This book takes it from the viewpoint of children who have always grown up in American and get to experience the privileges of their citizenship to the fullest. They reaped the rewards that previous generations had worked hard to achieve. It's really hard to sum up this book in a small review so I would recommend that you just go out and read it for yourself. These books are some of Francine's best and I would recommend them for all mothers and daughters to read and then discuss. HIGHLY recommended.

Hayek's Journey: The Mind of Friedrich Hayek

Hayek's Journey: The Mind of Friedrich Hayek
Dr. Alan Ebenstein,Alan Ebenstein | 2003-07-01 00:00:00 | Palgrave Macmillan | 288 | Historical
Hayek's Journey is a philosophical, intellectual exploration of Hayek's comprehensive life work. Tracing Hayek's intellectual journey from Vienna at the turn of the 20th century through London, Chicago, and Freiburg, Hayek's Journey provides a deeper understanding and exploration of Hayek's thought than previously attempted. Special attention is given to Hayek's intellectual relationships with Carl Menger, Ludwig von Mises, John Maynard Keynes, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Karl Popper, and Milton Friedman. Hayek's Journey presents Hayek as an economist, political philosopher, and pure philosopher. Particular consideration is given also to development of Hayek's final work, The Fatal Conceit. In Hayek's Journey, Hayek emerges as a thinker and writer of the greatest depth and importance.

Reviews
Having read this book without first reading Ebenstein's companion biography on Hayek, perhaps my criticism is not fully warranted, but this book seemed to fall a little short. Hayek is unarguably a fascinating thinker and my hope when picking this up was to learn how that thinking developed: how for example did he wrestle to change from his early socialist leanings when confronted with the problem of economic calculation. There is a lot of interesting factual information to be found in the book, but it is disjointed and ultimately a little frustrating to read. Perhaps Ebenstein's companion biography on Hayak's life reads a little smoother and expresses more of a compelling narrative, and this is just an unfortunate result of a failed biographical mind body split.

All this being said I still think many will still find the book worth a read. There is much to be gained in exploring Hayek - kind of like if I were to take a photograph of a supper model with a point and shoot camera, I'd end up with a picture worth viewing, but not because of my exemplary photographic skills. Eberstein doesn't take the greatest picture of Hayek but based on the merit of the subject I'd still recommend taking a look.

Reviews
In this readable volume, Ebenstein offers an overview of Hayek's thought organized thematically rather than chronologically. It is meant as a companion volume to Ebenstein's biography of Hayek, but I read it as a supplement to Caldwell's intellectual biography, Hayek's Challenge.

Being only modestly acquainted with 20th century history, and even less so on economic and political theories, I strongly endorse reading a historical account of Hayek prior to considering this thematic presentation. Hayek was a man of his time, passionately contending with political ideologies and economic centralization that he felt threatened individual liberties. In my view, a historical approach can more aptly express the interplay of social, cultural, and personal influences that shaped Hayek's life and thought.

Be that as it may, Ebenstein has done a fine job in this book. Each chapter is devoted to a specific idea of, or a major influence on, Hayek. Foundational ideas incorporated into Hayek's thought are discussed (Darwinianism, German historicism, Austrian school economics) as are significant works that denoted major changes in his thought. Individual chapters deal with Mises, Keynes, Friedman and Popper, and another contrasts Hayek's thought with Marx, Mill, and Freud. Hayek's major economic thought is address in chapters devoted to both his early years and his later work.

I recommend this book primarily as a ready and current reference for the ongoing debates and interpretations of Hayek. Ebenstein's Bibliographical Essay on the collected works of Hayek may be an essential source for those studying this man.
Reviews
I read Ebenstein's biography of Hayek with high expectations, only to find the work disjointed, inadequate, and incomplete, and I was left with the feeling that either the author did not understand Hayek, had problems expressing himself or did not do adequate research.

When this title hit the bookshops, I immediately purchased a copy thinking that this volume would make up for the inadequacies of the first. But again, I am left with the feeling that a better work on the life and writings of the great Von Hayek is still to be written!
Reviews
A very good starting point for those who have heard about Hayek and his ideas, but are not ready to jump into the details of his other works. A few well known traders say that to do well in the stock market, one must have a good understanding of the thinking of the Austrian School.

This book summarizes the ideas and discusses his many books, most of which are currently in print. It is written in an easy to read style. It may help you decide which of Hayek's works to read first.

I enjoyed it.
Reviews
Frederich Hayek was a genius who happened upon his brilliance by both nature and nurture. He lived in an era which thought it not unusual to work in both the physical and social sciences. In Hayek's case it was most important that his first love was biology since the evolutionary underpinnings of society were fundamental to his approach to the social sciences.

He is today remembered for such classics as THE FATAL CONCEIT, THE CONSTITUTION OF LIBERTY and especially THE ROAD TO SERFDOM. He excelled in many categories and it was this fusion of various fields that made his work so unique and so vital. Starting as a scientist in the tradition of Ernest Mach, he soon began studies in economics, particularly value. From semi-Socialist leanings he became convinced of the link between economic and political freedom. This was the subtext of THE ROAD TO SERFDOM.

His argument against collectivism and central-run economies are as valid today as they were in the early part of last century. Central economies fail because 1) Society has too much knowledge to be centrally commanded (2) all economic decisions become political and thus authoritarian and noncreative and (3) there is no way to set value (price) under Socialism.

THE SENSORY ORDER dealt with epistomology, then he branched out to philosophy and politics. As an example of how Socialist we have become, Hayek's views were called ""liberal" and are now called "conservative" despite the fact that they're unchanged. He wrote one piece "WHY I AM NOT A CONSERVATIVE" which is a clarion call for libertarianism and classical liberalism.

The book examines the clashes between intellectual giants - von Mises, Popper, Mach, Wittgenstein (his cousin) and others. He was a secularist, a capitalist and a political liberal in the classical sense. His work on monetary policy still affects us (adjusting interest rates to increase or decrease the money supply, "floating" currencies externally). His influence with Western politicians and intellectual leaders was and is huge. He won the Nobel Prize for Economics in appreciation for his many contributions.

Almost as an afterward Hayek issued a brilliant statement. The aim of all economists is the increase in material wealth. He wanted this accomplished through an increase in wealth (capitalism) rather than a confiscation / redistribution of wealth (socialism / central run economies). The battle between these two points of view are with us today.

Rude Republic: Americans and Their Politics in the Nineteenth Century.

Rude Republic: Americans and Their Politics in the Nineteenth Century.
Glenn C. Altschuler,Stuart M. Blumin | 2001-10-01 00:00:00 | Princeton University Press | 328 | 19th Century
What did politics and public affairs mean to those generations of Americans who first experienced democratic self-rule? Taking their cue from vibrant political campaigns and very high voter turnouts, historians have depicted the nineteenth century as an era of intense and widespread political enthusiasm. But rarely have these historians examined popular political engagement directly, or within the broader contexts of day-to-day life. In this bold and in-depth look at Americans and their politics, Glenn Altschuler and Stuart Blumin argue for a more complex understanding of the "space" occupied by politics in nineteenth-century American society and culture. Mining such sources as diaries, letters, autobiographies, novels, cartoons, contested-election voter testimony to state legislative committees, and the partisan newspapers of representative American communities ranging from Massachusetts and Georgia to Texas and California, the authors explore a wide range of political actions and attitudes. They consider the enthusiastic commitment celebrated by historians together with various forms of skepticism, conflicted engagement, detachment, and hostility that rarely have been recognized as part of the American political landscape. Rude Republic sets the political parties and their noisy and attractive campaign spectacles, as well as the massive turnout of voters on election day, within the communal social structure and calendar, the local human landscape of farms, roads, and county towns, and the organizational capacities of emerging nineteenth-century institutions. Political action and engagement are set, too, within the tide of events: the construction of the mass-based party system, the gathering crisis over slavery and disunion, and the gradual expansion of government (and of cities) in the post-Civil War era. By placing the question of popular engagement within these broader social, cultural, and historical contexts, the authors bring new understanding to the complex trajectory of American democracy.
Reviews
"Rude Republic" is an attempt to portray the heated political atmosphere of the first years of the United States, where everyone seemed to have a political opinion on any subject and was willing to share it. It's a great premise of a politically charged time in US history that hasn't really been explored in great detail. The authors attempt to dispute the premise that the average citizen during the 19th century was politically active because of the exceptionally high turnout at the polls. The authors contend that this just means that the political parties were successful in getting men to the polls, but that the average citizen considered party politics as dirty and beneath the genteel citizen. The book provides a good examination of popular literature, both magazines and novels, and how it reflected the opinion of politics. Unfortunately, the authors' prose is dense and hard to follow; descriptions of historical facts are often interrupted for opinions; and the historical perspective veers too far into the sociological realm without seeming to make a point.

Design of Distillation Column Control Systems

Design of Distillation Column Control Systems
P. Buckley , J. Shunta, W. Luyben | 1985-01-01 00:00:00 | Butterworth-Heinemann | 576 | Chemical Engineering
Product Description
A distillation column is both multivariable and nonlinear - and it consumes immense quantities of energy. Yet, despite the desigh challenges it presents, it is still the most popular unit operation for refining in industrial plants today. Much has been published on the subject of distillation column design, but much remains to be explained. That is why this book is unique. In a departure from the more traditional empirical and theoretical approaches, it introduced the reader to the practical realm, by presenting quantitative design techniques that have been demonstrated to be useful and valid over the course of hundreds of actual applications.

The book is divided into three main parts. Part I, an introduction, presents an industrial perspective of control objectives. It discusses briefly the relationship between column design features and column controllability. It thus provides a short refresher course for chemical engineers and background for those trained in other branches of engineering. Part II, Concepts and Configurations, discusses column overhead and base arrangements, typical control schemes, and some hardware considerations. Part III is dedicated to quantitative design. Mathematical models are presented for pressure and differential pressure controls, liquid level control, and composition control of binary distillation.

Emphasis on topics of primary interest to the control engineer
Essentially nonmathematical treatment
Ideal for those involved in troubleshooting existing columns as well to design engineers

Physical Chemistry in Depth

Physical Chemistry in Depth
Johannes Karl Fink | 2009-10-01 00:00:00 | springer | 532 | Chemistry
"Physical Chemistry in Depth" is not a stand-alone text, but complements the text of any standard textbook on "Physical Chemistry" into depth having in mind to provide profound understanding of some of the topics presented in these textbooks. Standard textbooks inPhysical Chemistry start with thermodynamics, deal with kinetics, structure of matter, etc. The "Physical Chemistry in Depth " follows this adjustment, but adds chapters that are treated traditionally in ordinary textbooks inadequately, e.g., general scaling laws, the graphlike structure of matter, and cross connections between the individual disciplines ofPhysical Chemistry . Admittedly, the text is loaded with some mathematics, which is a prerequisite to thoroughly understand the topics presented here. However, the mathematics needed is explained at a really low level so that no additional mathematical textbook is needed.

Voice Over IPv6: Architectures for Next Generation VoIP Networks

Voice Over IPv6: Architectures for Next Generation VoIP Networks
| 2006-04-11 00:00:00 | | 0 | VoIP/IP Telephony

IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is the future of Internet telephony. And this book is your guide to that future.

IPv6 is the replacement for the currently used IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4). IPv6 will offer increased IP addresses (full 128-bit addresses, compared to the 32-bit addresses of IPv4), enhanced security, and greater robustness. It will also be fully `backwards compatible` with existing IPv4 systems. These capabilities will finally make Internet telephony a viable competitor to conventional switched telephone networks. In this book, Dan Minoli clearly explains IPv6 and how telephone networks can be built on its foundations.

This is not just another IPv6 book; instead, it focuses on those aspects of IPv6 relevant to Internet telephony systems and voice networks. Minoli uses a compare/contrast approach, exploring where IPv6 is similar to IPv4 and where it differs, to let you quickly grasp the essence of IPv6 and the similarities (and differences) between current IPv4-based systems and IPv6-based systems.

If you will be designing, implementing, or maintaining the next generation of Internet telephony systems, then you need the information in this book!

*Explains the essential concepts of IPv6 and how they relate to Internet telephony
*Describes how Internet telephony systems using IPv6 are different from, and better than, Internet telephony systems based on the older IPv4 standard
*Discusses how to transition existing IPv4 Internet telephony systems and conventional switched systems to IPv6-based systems
*Extensive treatment of security issues, including IP layer encryption and authentication methods
*Explains connection techniques, including `plug and play` approaches, for equipment used in IPv6 systems

* The first title describing how the next generation Internet protocol-IPv6-can be used for Internet telephony
* Explains IPv6 as it applies to Internet telephony (VoIP)
* Shows how IPv6 gives better security, QoS, and signal integrity in Internet telephony

Deception

Deception
Jonathan Kellerman | 2010-03-30 00:00:00 | | 0 | Fiction
Alex Delaware fans will enjoy Deception. The plot is tight, the balance between Alex/Milo just about right, the cutesy-poo interchanges with Alex's luthier/love kept to a bare minimum. A substitute teacher/tutor at an elite Westwood prep school turns up dead, packed with dry ice. With a taste for Grey Goose and a roving eye that extends beyond her relationship with a pudgy, gambler/salesman, there are any number of possible suspects and motives for the icing. The problem is that the LAPD Chief's son is a student at the school and the Chief fears that any adverse publicity could jeopardize the school's reputation and, hence, the son's chances for admission to Yale.

It's great to see the Chief again, a model of insight/cleverness yoked with snarky political incorrectness. In a world where coptalk and copspeak are the coin of the realm, you can see why he is the head honcho. He tries to keep Milo on a short leash (with predictable, negative results) as Milo and Alex investigate the pomps and works of prep schools and the politics of the SAT's/ACT's. Alex gets to use a bit of his psychological training; we get to see some of the dark side of L.A. and the even darker side of L.A.'s prep schools.

This is a solid outing, not the best of the series necessarily, but one which is smooth, tight and to the point. The chief and his son are worlds apart in their takes on things; you'll like both.
