Environmental and Health and Safety Management: A Guide to Compliance

Environmental and Health and Safety Management: A Guide to Compliance
Nicholas P. Cheremisinoff,Madelyn L. Haber | 1996-01-14 00:00:00 | William Andrew | 519 | Civil Procedure
This volume has been prepared for the Environmental and Health & Safety Manager. The EH&S Manager is a new breed of corporate professionals that are faced with the responsibility of handling both environmental policy/issues and occupational safety issues within organizations. Throughout the 1980s there was a proliferation of health and safety departments, environmental compliance personnel, and technical people associated with handling pollution control and waste management. American industry has been over the last several years contracting and downsizing their operations. In doing so, many corporations, large and small, are demanding greater responsibilities be delegated to middle and line function management. In this regard, many corporations today are moving towards a single management entity, the EH&S Manager, who's responsibilities require extensive knowledge of both the environmental statutes and OSHA standards.

This desk reference has been written as a compliance source for the EH&S Manager. The authors prefer to call the EH&S Manager an Occupational Safety Professional and use this designation interchangeably throughout the text. This individual, as stated above, has a dual responsibility that requires both technical and managerial skills in two arenas. In this regard, this book provides the working professional a reference on both the environmental regulations and industry safety standards. Additionally, it covers management practices for on-site hazard materials handling operations and constitutes an important reference for establishing hazard communication and training programs for employees.

Reading Hegel's Phenomenology (Studies in Continental Thought)

Reading Hegel's Phenomenology (Studies in Continental Thought)
John Russon | 2004-09-28 00:00:00 | Indiana University Press | 320 | Philosophy
Product Description:

In Reading Hegel's Phenomenology, John Russon uses the theme of reading to clarify the methods, premises, evidence, reasoning, and conclusions developed in Hegel's seminal text. Russon's approach facilitates comparing major sections and movements of the text, and demonstrates that each section of Phenomenology of Spirit stands independently in its focus on the themes of human experience. Along the way, Russon considers the rich relevance of Hegel's philosophy to understanding other key Western philosophers, such as Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, Husserl, Heidegger, and Derrida. Major themes include language, embodiment, desire, conscience, forgiveness, skepticism, law, ritual, multiculturalism, existentialism, deconstruction, and absolute knowing. An important companion to contemporary Hegel studies, this book will be of interest to all students of Hegel's philosophy.

User review
Great desk reference
While this book is quite the industrial doorstop and is rather daunting for newbies, it serves as a nice reference and does a great job explaining in-depth such things as VxFS/JFS, kernel options, and memory utilization. There is a section on identifying bottlenecks that I found particularly interesting. With the new exams coming out (soon or already), its usefulness as a study guide is somewhat diminished, but the information contained should continue to be valid for years to come. One of the nice things about operating systems at this level is the long lifetimes and backward compatibility.

User review
Excellent Study Guide and Desk Reference
Sometimes you buy a book and wonder if it is any good or not.

This book provides excellent, thorough and detailed information on HP-UX S/W and the platform H/W.

It is a hard-cover book, and it is about 1700 pages. This book touches on PA-RISC and Itanium Servers with SuperDome.

Handbook of Biometrics

Handbook of Biometrics
| 2007-10-29 00:00:00 | | 0 | Biometrics

Biometric recognition, or simply Biometrics, is a rapidly evolving field with applications ranging from accessing one's computer to gaining entry into a country. Biometric systems rely on the use of physical or behavioral traits, such as fingerprints, face, voice and hand geometry, to establish the identity of an individual. The deployment of large-scale biometric systems in both commercial (e.g., grocery stores, amusement parks, airports) and government (e.g., US-VISIT) applications has served to increase the public's awareness of this technology. This rapid growth has also highlighted the challenges associated with designing and deploying biometric systems. Indeed, the problem of biometric recognition is a `Grand Challenge` in its own right. The past five years has seen a significant growth in biometric research resulting in the development of innovative sensors, robust and efficient algorithms for feature extraction and matching, enhanced test methodologies and novel applications. These advances have resulted in robust, accurate, secure and cost effective biometric systems.

The Handbook of Biometrics -- an edited volume contributed by prominent invited researchers in Biometrics -- describes the fundamentals as well as the latest advancements in the burgeoning field of biometrics. It is designed for professionals composed of practitioners and researchers in Biometrics, Pattern Recognition and Computer Security. The Handbook of Biometrics can be used as a primary textbook for an undergraduate biometrics class. This book is also suitable as a secondary textbook or reference for advanced-level students in computer science.

Clinical Data-Mining: Integrating Practice and Research

Clinical Data-Mining: Integrating Practice and Research

Clinical Data-Mining: Integrating Practice and Research (Pocket Guides to Social Work Research Methods)
By Irwin Epstein

* Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
* Number Of Pages: 240
* Publication Date: 2009-11-02
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 019533552X
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780195335521

Product Description:

Clinical Data-Mining (CDM) involves the conceptualization, extraction, analysis, and interpretation of available clinical data for practice knowledge-building, clinical decision-making and practitioner reflection. Depending upon the type of data mined, CDM can be qualitative or quantitative; it is generally retrospective, but may be meaningfully combined with original data collection.

Any research method that relies on the contents of case records or information systems data inevitably has limitations, but with proper safeguards these can be minimized. Among CDM's strengths however, are that it is unobtrusive, inexpensive, presents little risk to research subjects, and is ethically compatible with practitioner value commitments. When conducted by practitioners, CDM yields conceptual as well as data-driven insight into their own practice- and program-generated questions.
This pocket guide, from a seasoned practice-based researcher, covers all the basics of conducting practitioner-initiated CDM studies or CDM doctoral dissertations, drawing extensively on published CDM studies and completed CDM dissertations from multiple social work settings in the United States, Australia, Israel, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. In addition, it describes consulting principles for researchers interested in forging collaborative university-agency CDM partnerships, making it a practical tool for novice practitioner-researchers and veteran academic-researchers alike.

As such, this book is an exceptional guide both for professionals conducting practice-based research as well as for social work faculty seeking an evidence-informed approach to practice-research integration.

Summary: A Most Important (and Enjoyable) Addition to Your Research Library
Rating: 5

In Moliere's ballet-play, Le Bourgeoise Gentilhomme," a comedic element involves the discovery by the main character that he was speaking prose, but didn't know it. Similarly, social work clinicians have long been producing informational "ore" in the practices, but may have been unaware of the extent to which this was valuable research data needing to be "prospected" and "mined."
Fortunately, for the readers of this very informative and entertaining book, Clinical Data-Mining feels like a substantive and enjoyable conversation with the author in either his or the reader's living room.
Professor Epstein has written an innovative book that can serve as a research strategy for those contemplating a doctoral dissertation, as well as a research tool for agency-based and independent social work clinicians interested in conducting and integrating research into their clinical practices. If it is not already there, it is easy to imagine that faculty in schools of social work will find it a valuable new tool in their research curriculum kits.
The "mining" metaphor is cleverly used throughout the volume and simultaneously serves to unify the conceptual material and arouse the reader's interest in the utilization of CDM. It also provides additional levity to a book that already succeeds in being fun-to-read...no small achievement for a research text.
Dr. Epstein has managed to do in this book with CDM what he has been long known to achieve in the classroom and in his workshops and lectures: make research and related concepts thought-provoking and engaging, give the reader a tour of the research possibilities in front of them, and give instruction and guidance to the ways in which clinical data is research worthy and how mined data can inform and enhance clinical practice in all settings.
His CDM fluency and the comprehensive tour of his subject offered in this tight informational package make it an important book for research-oriented practitioners, students, and academics both in and out of social work.

Summary: A must read for CDM researchers
Rating: 5

I am a doctoral student in social work and found this book to be a breath of fresh air. It has always been a personal challenge to pick up and read a book about social work research. Due to the relevance of the material in this book for my research purpose, I decided to read the book while waiting at the doctor's office as I was 'stuck' in one place. I was thrilled to find that it was an easy read (ie: I did not need a strong cup of coffee to keep me awake!) and I appreciated the humor. The content is very clear and the chapters are well laid out. A great book to add to my social work research collection. This is a must read for students who are considering or carrying out Clinical Data - Mining for their research/dissertations.

Summary: Expanding Your Social Work Research Worlview
Rating: 5

Clinical Data-Mining: Integrating Practice and Research, is a must read for social work researchers and educators, particularly those who teach research. Dr. Epstein demonstrates to the reader in a concise, candid, and humorous manner, the strengths of CDM for social work faculty and practitioners. In his discussion of CDM, Dr. Epstein provides a historical context which illuminates the challenges that he and other researchers have experienced in the acceptance of this approach as valid and useful. At the same time,he offers examples of original CDM research measuring program effectiveness, fidelity, as well as treatment outcomes. These examples provide validation that CDM is a valuable, practical, and useful research method for practitioners, faculty, and researchers of social work. An enriching and practical guide that will expand your social work research worldview.

Summary: Little book; big job
Rating: 5

This little book does a big job--and does it very well. As a teacher of social work, I know how crucial it is for practitioners to believe that what they learn from their work has value to their profession. Unfortunately, until books like Dr. Epstein's (which are almost non-existent)came on the scene, practitioners had little way to demonstrate to a wider audience the importance of what they were doing and learning. Quantitative researchers had the field pretty much convinced that they, and they alone, could draw meaning from data.

Not so, say I, and many of my colleagues; and Dr. Epstein shows us and our students how to prove that. In a clear, accessible, and engaging book, he gives social work practitioners specific tools--and examples of their use--for drawing meaningful, usable information from the many forms of data that they create and have ready at hand. The data can be handled quantitatively, or qualitatively; what is most important is that it is there, waiting to be used.

Nine times out of ten, I would opt for root canal work before reading a book on social work research. This is the tenth time. This is not your typical bloodless, formulaic, statistic-strangled research text. This is a book written by a person: a person with a sense of humor, and a sense of humility; a person who knows what social work practice is; who knows what research is, and who shows how practitioners can bring them together.

Summary: Timely and Relevant
Rating: 5

Dr. Epstein's concise and convincing argument for CDM is an important and timely work. As a practioner with over thirty years experience in children's services, Dr. Epstein has a clear and insightful understanding of practice and the powerful data that is available that can be utilized to better understand clients and interventions. CDM is a timely work in light of the advent of an explosion of available data in the electronic age of health and mental health records. Well done.....

Recently, I was asked to help out Nantucket Community Sailing by writing and producing a video about the organization for prospective sponsors of Nantucket Race Week. I was asked because it's known that I have an (extremely modest) knowledge of how to operate a video camera, which made me an expert relative to everyone else.

I've never actually written a script before, or indeed, tried anything in marketing of this nature. "Power Sales Words" helped me figure out who our prospective sponsors were, what our pitch was, and how to frame the pitch appropriately.

Very glad to have found this book, because the resulting video is a huge improvement over what we did last year, and now that we've done it once, we know how to make it better next time.

New Directions in Bioprocess Modeling and Control: Maximizing Process Analytical Technology Benefits
    Michael A. Boudreau and Gregory K. McMillan | 2006-09-19 00:00:00 | isa | 338 | Engineering
Models offer benefits even before they are put on line. Based on years of experience, the authors reveal in New Directions in Bioprocess Modeling and Control that significant improvements can result from the process knowledge and insight that are gained when building experimental and first-principle models for process monitoring and control. Doing modeling in the process development and early commercialization phases is advantageous because it increases process efficiency and provides ongoing opportunities for improving process control. This technology is important for maximizing benefits from analyzers and control tool investments.

If you are a process design, quality control, information systems, or automation engineer in the biopharmaceutical, brewing, or bio-fuel industry, this handy resource will help you define, develop, and apply a virtual plant, model predictive control, first-principle models, neural networks, and multivariate statistical process control. The synergistic knowledge discovery on bench top or pilot plant scale can be ported to industrial scale processes. This learning process is consistent with the intent in the Process Analyzer and Process Control Tools sections of the FDA s Guidance for Industry PAT A Framework for Innovative Pharmaceutical Development, Manufacturing and Quality Assurance.

It states in the Process Analyzer section of the FDA s guidance: For certain applications, sensor-based measurements can provide a useful process signature that may be related to the underlying process steps or transformations. Based on the level of process understanding these signatures may also be useful for the process monitoring, control, and end point determination when these patterns or signatures relate to product and process quality.

Iron Melting Cupola Furnaces for the Small Foundry

Iron Melting Cupola Furnaces for the Small Foundry
    Stephen D. Chastain | 2000-07-01 00:00:00 | Stephen D. Chastain | 128 | Engineering
Complete plans and operating instructions for a 10 inch diameter cupola that melts 330 pounds of iron when powered by a shop vac. Also included are plans for a high pressure blower that will increase the output to 660 pound of iron per hour. All can be built for little cost, mostly from scrap.
    Reviews
I won't re-iterate the previous good reviews on this book. However, there's one review in which the author mentions the cupola furnace is "small". A furnace that melts upwards of 600 pounds of grey iron per hour is nothing to sneeze at. And, the furnace can provide approximately 200 lbs of iron per tap. That's more than one man can handle. Besides, he gives you all the information necessary to build whatever size you want! As for the requirement of welding equipment, lathe, etc. - if you don't own or have access to this equipment and the knowledge to use it correctly, you shouldn't be attempting to build anything of this sort to begin with. This is an excellent book written by someone with the practical knowledge that uses the furnace the way an above average machinist/mechainc/repairman would. This book will give an individual an opportunity to make him/herself an excellent living.

This is a nice book on how to build a realatively small cupola for melting iron. It is well written, and he has a couple of pictures in the book. This is not a beginners furnace however and it requires a cutting torch, welder, and a small lathe for a couple of parts. Also, iron in general is rather dangerous for a beginner, so start with lead or Aluminum. For info on melting aluminum, check out ...
In general, I would recommend this book for reference if you are a beginning foundry person, but if you are really serious, go for it.

Steve's book has a good mix of practicalinformation and theory. Using his little book, two of my friends and I have taken the detailed information presented and have fabricated a working coke burning cupola furnace (including the blower). I would not have started the project without his book. Steve also gives detailed information on running the furnace to melt iron. His book now finds its self dog-eared, highlighted, annotated, and returned to often - it is well worth the money.

Steve Chastain has written a modern, comprehensive "how to" guide on the construction and operation of small cupola furnaces. I have built and operated a 10 inch cupola furnace using his book as the major reference. The chapters include:

    1) Cupola theory and design considerations

    2) Building a 10 inch cupola

    3) Cupola operation

    4) Air supply and blowers

    5) Designing centrifugal fans

    6) Construction of centrifugal fans

    7) Construction of a Pitot tube and manometer

    8) Calculation of Air Flow

    9) Additional Cupolas based on the 15 inch shell

    10) Oxygen enrichment

    11) Purchase of Coke

    12) Conclusion

    Appendix:

    Suppliers

    Airflow through pipe

This 128 page book is a treasure trove for the amateur foundryman. It is absolutely packed with accurate information. I have operated a small propane fired crucible furnace for several years and needed larger volumes of cast iron. Without any prior experience I was able to build a functioning 10 inch cupola furnace. I made mistakes along the way. The two most glaring were not following the blower selection and cupola operation exactly. You can not take shortcuts, period. I was intimidated by the thought of building a powerful blower and tried to substitute insulation and dust collection blowers. It didn't work. Re-reading the book explained why in eloquent detail (with straight forward math to back it up). I had never built and balanced a blower before. Following the book I had a blower that worked the first time and exceeded design specifications. I picked the wrong size coke for the furnace and produced a disappointing quantity of cast iron as a result. Using the correct size coke and following the instructions remedied the situation. If there are limitations with this small book it is that the author expects that you will read and comprehend the book before you rush off and start building the furnace. Do not take short cuts. This will ultimately save you time, money and frustration.

I can recommend Mr. Chastains book with enthusiasm.

Post Walrasian Macroeconomics: Beyond the Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Model

Post Walrasian Macroeconomics: Beyond the Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Model
    David Colander | 2006-07-17 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 440 | Economics
Macroeconomics is evolving in an almost dialectic fashion. The latest evolution is the development of a new synthesis that combines insights of new classical, new Keynesian and real business cycle traditions into a dynamic, stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model that serves as a foundation for thinking about macro policy. That new synthesis has opened up the door to a new antithesis, which is being driven by advances in computing power and analytic techniques. This new synthesis is coalescing around developments in complexity theory, automated general to specific econometric modeling, agent-based models, and non-linear and statistical dynamical models. This book thus provides the reader with an introduction to what might be called a Post Walrasian research program that is developing as the antithesis of the Walrasian DSGE synthesis.
    Reviews
David Colander is an intelligent, principled, and indefatiguable proponent of alternatives to the received wisdom in economics. This book lays out a cogent critique of standard macroeconomic theory and proposes directions for empirically-grounded alternatives.

It is easy to critique the three main traditional branches of macroeconomics, Walrasian, Keynesian, and New Classical. The Walrasian model is purely an equilibrium model with no known analytically-based dynamics. Because macroeconomics deals centrally with disequilibrium and dynamical phenomena, it is perfectly useless for macroeconomic dynamics, and this has been well-known for fifty years. The Keynesian and New Classical models are "toy" models with "representative agents" and single markets in investment and consumption. The Keynesian model makes assumptions concerning individual irrationality that it claims underly the volatility of the market economy, and the New Classical model makes even more bizarre assumptions concerning rationality and market clearing. These models are, to my mind, so incredibly stupid that it is unbelievable that reasonable economists would hold any credence in them.

In fact, most economists don't really buy the standard models, but they are more or less in agreement with the policy implications of these models. This is lamentable, because it is clear that their policy implications are reasonable as often as unreasonable (although I must say that the New Classical policy recommendations are sometimes even stupider than the theory from which they are derived, and the Keynesian recommendations are often just social democratic crap---I tend to prefer the latter as the lesser of two really, really, distateful evils). I also think a great case can be made for the argument that many Nobel prizes awarded to New Classical ideologues are due to the right-wing zeal of Nobel Prize Committee's august chairman. The idea that Lucas, Prescott, et al. have made "scientific discoveries" is just one big joke.

What about alternatives? Let me say first that Colander has made a big mistake in identifying the reigning wisdom in macroeconomics as "Walrasian," and his proposed alternatives as "post-Walrasian." As Alan Kirman clearly states in the Forward to this book, not a single one of the attributions to Walras of the "post-Walrasians" is even remotely correct. Here are just a single example, others being scattered throughout the volume. "Walrasians assume high-level information processing capability and a rich information set." (p. 2) In fact, agents in the Walrasian general equilibrium model are price takes who know nothing but their own personal consumption/production/ownership characteristics.

By the choice of Colander's contributors, it is possible to infer that he sees two distinct directions for what he calls post-Walrasian macroeonomics. The first is what I would call "Walrasian Dynamics," which treats the economy as a complex dynamic nonlinear system, and uses techniques from complexity theory, especially agent-based modeling and analytical models with "fat tail" error distributions. This is ably represented by Leigh Tesfatsion, Robert Axtell, and Blake LeBaron. For the interested reader, my paper "The Dynamics of General Equilibrium" (Economic Journal, 2007) lies in this area and is the first to demonstrate both the quasi-stability and excessivel volatility of a dynamic version of Walrasian general equilibrium. The second is vector autoregression techniques that attempt to do without a specific "representative agent" model of the macro economy. I have no faith in the possibilities of such models, but the reader can judge for himself.

This book does not deliever the goods, but it is inspirational for those who are hardy enough to attempt to forge an alternative to the ghastly macro models that monopolize the field these days.
    Reviews
This book is a collection of essays that deals with Keynes, uncertainty, " modern " macroeconomic modeling and the DSGE model. This model is criticized .However, the criticism is not decisive because the majority of essay authors still want to work within the confines of mathematical probability theory which requires additivity and linearity.

My review will concentrate on the introduction and essays written by Leijonhufvud and Colander. Many of the other essays concentrate on the " modern " form of General Equilibrium theory called the " Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium " model(DSGE).The DSGE model is simply a version of the rational expectations approach based on a reinterpretation of Khinchin's physics gas -particle model that leads to the conclusion that the economy can be correctly modeled as following a Weiner process over time,i.e.,a normal probability distribution. The normal distribution is used in this reinterpreted model to describe the millions of random interactions of particles( trading activities of millions of independent and identically distributed consumer -producers ) that gain/lose energy ( gain/lose by exchanging above/below the mean market price ) through the gain /lose of electrons ( incomes increase/decrease ) in the endless collisions of the gas particles( endless market exchanges above /below the expected, mean, equilibrium market price). Heating up( economic expansion) the gas particles increases the interactions while cooling the particles down decreases( economic contraction ) the interactions. The law of large numbers and the central limit theorem allow one to calculate the mean and standard deviations, which measure the 'uncertainties'(risk)of this process over time.

The only problem is that there is not a shred of empirical, historical or statistical evidence to support this Ptolomaic type artificially constructed model .Benoit Mandelbrot ,as well as the thousand of researchers outside the economics profession who have duplicated and replicated his work, has established over the last 50 years that the distributions are Cauchy. An examination of the data totally and completely refutes the DSGE.

The second problem with the essays of Leijonhufvud and Colander is that the authors are ignorant of the basic model Keynes used in the GT in chapters 20 and 21.This model is an economic version of Keynes's conventional coefficient of risk and weight ,c,model which introduced non linearity and non additivity into the decision making calculus.Keynes integrates the decisive difference between the very special case of a linear and additive risk concept used by the DSGE model through the specification of his e and ed subscripts(see pp.304-306 of the GT).e and ed subscript elasticities that equal 1 lead to the special case result of the DSGE of full employment over time while values of e and ed subscript < 1 lead to the general result of involuntary unemployment.

I append Keynes's 1921 A Treatise on Probability(TP) form of the analysis below for the interested reader. It can be found in sections 6-8 of chapter 26.The technical details can be found on p.315 and in footnote 2 on p.315 .Keynes presented a very precise analysis demonstrating that an analysis of uncertainty introduced non additivity and non linearity into the formal representation of decision making. The subjectivist, Bayesian approach regards probability as another name for the purely mathematical laws of the probability calculus that requires additivity and linearity. The Subjectivist approach makes the crucial error of conflating probability theory with decision theory.Keynes realized that ,due to the impact of the weight of the evidence (confidence)on decision makers ,as well as the optimism-pessimism of the decision maker, decision theory would have to be able to take into account the importance of non linearity and non additivity. The concept of expected value or utility is crucial to the Ramsey-De Finetti approach.Keynes demonstrated that expected value or expected utility can ,at best,be a special case only of a much more general theory .

The Ramsey-De Finetti approach is the mathematical translation of Jeremy Benthem's Benthamite Utilitarian approach.Bentham's approach was that the whole can not be anything more than the sum of the individual ,atomic parts. However, this requires the assumptions of additivity and linearity.Bentham assumed also that all decision makers can calculate the odds.Keynes showed that this was not the case. Keynes's demonstration ,taken from chapter 26 of his A Treatise on Probability(1921;TP),of the special case nature of any expected value(utility) approach ,based on the purely mathematical laws of the probability calculus, shows this to be a very special case when w=1.Bentham claimed that all individuals have the capability to calculate the odds and outcomes and act on the expected utility (the probability times the utility of the outcome) in a rational way. This can be expressed by the following ,where p is the probability of success,q is the probability of failure, and A is the outcome:

    Maximize pA.

The modern version of this is to Maximize pU(A),where p is a subjective probability that is additive, linear, precise, and exact and U(A) is a Von Neumann-Morgenstern Utility function. The goal is to

    Maximize pU(A).

The modern name for Benthamite Utilitarianism in neoclassical economics is SEU theory(Subjective Expected Utility). Therefore,a microeconomic foundation based on Utility Maximization is just Benthamite Utilitarianism updated with modern mathematical probability techniques.Modern macroeconomics is all disguised SEU theory.

Keynes rejected Benthamite Utilitarianism as a very special case that would only hold under the special assumptions of the subjectivist, Bayesian model-that all probabilities were additive, linear, precise, single number answers that obeyed the purely mathematical laws of the probability calculus.

Keynes specifies his conventional coefficient of risk and weight,c, model in chapter 26 of the TP on p.314 and footnote 2 on p.314,as a counter weight to the Benthamite Utilitarian approach of Ramsey.

Essentially, Keynes's generalized model is given by

    c=2pw/(1+q)(1+w),

where w is Keynes's weight of the evidence variable that measures the completeness of the relevant, available evidence upon which the probabilities p and q are calculated.(Benthamite Utilitarians always assume that the value of w is always 1.)w is an index defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1,p is the probability of success, and q is the probability of failure.p+q sum to 1 if they are additive. This requires that w=1.Keynes's c coefficient can be rewritten as

    c=p [1/(1+q)][2w/(1+w)].

Now multiply the above by A or U(A).One obtains

    cA =p[1/(1+q) ][2w/(1+w)] A or

    cU(A)= p[1/(1+q)][2w/(1+w)]U(A).

The goal is to maximuze cA or cU(A).The weight 1/(1+q) deals with non linearity of probability preferences. The weight 2w/(1+w) deals with non additivity.Modern Macroeconomics amounts to nothing more than the claim that c=p or cA [cU(A])= pA [pU(A)] .

It is now straightforward to see that the neoclassical microfoundations of macroeconomics assumes that all probabilities are additive and linear. This is nothing but a special case of Keynes's generalized decision rule to maximize cA,or cU(A),as opposed to the Benthamite Utilitarian rule to maximize pA or pU(A). Economists today have only a very vague, hazy, cloudy understanding of Keynes 's distinction between risk and uncertainty. It is this distinction that has to be grasped first before any economist can have any hope of understanding what Keynes meant in the GT.

The conclusion is very straightforward. SEU theorists use the rule to Maximize pU(A).Keynes used the rule to maximize cU(A).Keynes's rule is of the same kind or type of rule used by the overwhelmingly ambiguity averse decision makers that populated the real world in the past as well as in the present.Keynes's analysis of uncertainty is clearly related to non additivity and non linearity. It is only an anomaly in a neoclassical world of linearity and additivity that exists for Benthamite Utilitarian and for the DSGE model .

One doesn't usually think about reading an encyclopedia straight through, but I really enjoyed doing so with this one. The entries are clearly written and interesting, illustrating the breadth of evolutionary science. Of course, it can also be used as a reference source to review brief summaries of the key concepts in evolution. An intriguing perspective is provided by Rice on creationist nonsense as he was once one himself and openly shares how his viewpoint shifted to the other side. He is a botanist and so many of the references to evolution from the plant perspective were refreshingly new to someone like me who has been more interested by animal evolution. The Appendix is a very nice summary of the Origin of Species; reading it really made me appreciate just what an incredible genius Darwin was. Strongly recommended!!

If I'm not mistaken CA public school science standards don't introduce evolution into grade schools until the 7th grade. The CA textbooks that I come across for recycle at public libraries and elsewhere confirm this.

In that light, I purchased a few good books on evolution for my daughter that would fill that void. If very young children can get a fear-based education in bible school every week, surely a 6th grader should be provided with a decent home library to supplement what is sorely lacking.

This one by Rice arrived in the mail first. While it IS geared toward 9th grade and HS readers, it is exactly what one could expect from an experienced and qualified biology teacher. Rice includes excellent book and web references. As a scientist and practicing Christian he handles the creationist/evolution debate nicely.

Of course my daughter immediately had to bring to the old man's attention the entry WHY DO HUMANS DIE?

Aging and Death Are in the Body--

"From age 30 to 75, the average male human loses 44 percent of his brain capacity, 64 percent of his taste buds, and 44 pecent of his lung capacity. The older man's heart output is 30 percent lower, and his nerves 10 percent slower. His brain receives 20 percent less blood. During exercise the older man absorbs 60 percent less oxygen into the blood." And so on.

I immediately turned to the entry 'religion, evolution of' for some consolation.

"Religion would probably have been a local abberation in early human populations had it not provided some evolutionary advantage."

In my shrinking brain I'm going to remember that when I review creationist lit on Amazon.

I started reading books on evolution 2 years ago. I stopped counting at 35. Authors such as: Mayr, Goulding, Simpson, Huxley, Ridley, Zimmer, Goldsmith, Margulis, Simpson, Dawkins, Eisley, Darwin, Dennett, Eldredge, Greene, Futuyma. I consider this book to be among the best. A great tool to get a handle on the most significant facts, discoveries and personalities in the field. This would be a great book for college and high school libraries. I would never have thought that an Encyclopedia type format would be so interesting to simply sit down and read. One has only to turn to the first pages of the book in the Acknowledgments to see the people who have reviewed the volume... basically a who's who of leaders in the field of Evolution... to realize that this book is a significant contribution... and worthy of anybody's time. I checked the book out of the library... but I'm afraid I'm going to have to go out and buy my own copy.

If you know nothing about economics but know something is wrong in America and want to find out what is really going on, read this book. The fundamental problem with our currency, the American dollar, is what is wrong. This book explains why. The Federal Reserve Bank is not federal, not a reserve and not a real bank. It is a partnership between the federal government and some very wealthy people who have rigged the system so that neither partner looses but everybody else does. This is a well written mystery book that explains exactly who the guilty are and how they continue with this scam. MUST READING!

This book will keep you from being deceived from every trick in the book the bankers will try to steal your money. It exposes the corruption of our banking system and therefore opens your eyes to how you can protect your wealth from being stolen.

If you can read this book and not feel compelled to educate people and fight the current banking system, then you're either a zombie or a banker.
    Reviews
I used to work in banking 20 years ago. What most people do not understand about the banking system is this... Congress will pass a bill to print more money. When that money is placed into a bank account (i.e.: checking, money market, CD, etc...) the bank can actuall report that they have 90% more money available to loan to customers. (Example: If you open a checking account with $100, then the bank can claim to have $1,000 for the purposes of loans. Where does the extra $900 come from?) The extra 90% is printed by the treasury to allow the banks to perform their loans. When the loan is paid back, the 90% is adjusted (destroyed) to match the balance of the customers on hand. The interest that is paid with the loan is used to pay salary, wages, utilities, etc... So, when a 30 year loan for a $200,000 house is given to a customer, the bank will earn close to $600,000 in interest. The principle $200,000 is backed only by $20,000 worth of deposits. So when the bank receives up to $800,000 for a $200,000 house, the treasury must allow enough cash to be flowing in public to cover this amount. The Federal Reserve Act that was blessed by Congress has allowed the banks to work this way for money. The interest rate is used to control the flow of money. (If the public does not have enough money to cover their loans, the interest rate will then be changed to allow consumer prices to change. Money spent is more money flowing and more loans available to get more money out in public. The opposite is true when too much money is in public and consumer prices are threatening to change. The interest rate is adjust to prevent price changes, but interest rates on loans will eat-up the extra cash that flows throughout the public.) So, Congress and the Federal Reserve is to blame. Plus, interest rates are used to control the accumulation of public wealth, but the banks will always come out ahead. As for this book? The book is actually good. It provides a better history of money from ancient times to the present than anyother book that I have come across. My suggestion? Read this book and then do the necessary research to prove or disprove to yourself the facts therein. One or two minor points from other readers is not enough to condemn a 600 page book.
    Reviews
Simply the best review of the genesis of the federal reserve that I have ever read. This is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the fundementals of our failing monetary policy.

The Flight of the Century: Charles Lindbergh and the Rise of American Aviation (Pivotal Moments in American History)

The Flight of the Century: Charles Lindbergh and the Rise of American Aviation (Pivotal Moments in American History)
    Thomas Kessner | 2010-07-21 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 336 | Lindbergh, Charles
In late May 1927 an inexperienced and unassuming 25-year-old Air Mail pilot from rural Minnesota stunned the world by making the first non-stop transatlantic flight. A spectacular feat of individual daring and collective technological accomplishment, Charles Lindbergh's flight from New York to Paris ushered in America's age of commercial aviation.
In The Flight of the Century, Thomas Kessner takes a fresh look at one of America's greatest moments, explaining how what was essentially a publicity stunt became a turning point in history. He vividly recreates the flight itself and the euphoric reaction to it on both sides of the Atlantic, and argues that Lindbergh's amazing feat occurred just when the world--still struggling with the disillusionment of WWI--desperately needed a hero to restore a sense of optimism and innocence. Kessner also shows how new forms of mass media made Lindbergh into the most famous international celebrity of his time, casting him in the role of a humble yet dashing American hero of rural origins and traditional values. Much has been made of Lindbergh's personal integrity and his refusal to cash in on his fame. But Kessner reveals that Lindbergh was closely allied with, and managed by, a group of powerful businessmen--Harry Guggenheim, Dwight Morrow, and Henry Breckenridge chief among them--who sought to exploit aviation for mass transport and massive profits. Their efforts paid off as commercial air traffic soared from 6,000 passengers in 1926 to 173,000 passengers in 1929. Kessner's book is the first to fully explore Lindbergh's central role in promoting the airline industry--the rise of which has influenced everything from where we live to how we wage war and do business.
The Flight of the Century sheds new light on one of America's fascinatingly enigmatic heroes and most transformative moments.

    Praise for Capital City:

"In Capital City, Kessner has achieved for his subject what James McPherson accomplished for the Civil War."

Cholesterol Binding and Cholesterol Transport Proteins:: Structure and Function in Health and Disease (Subcellular Biochemistry)
    J. Robin Harris | 2010-03-15 00:00:00 | Springer | 619 | Biochemistry

Knowledge of cholesterol and its interaction with protein molecules is of fundamental importance in both animal and human biology. This book contains 22 chapters, dealing in depth with structural and functional aspects of the currently known and extremely diverse unrelated families of cholesterol-binding and cholesterol transport proteins. By drawing together this range of topics the Editor has attempted to correlate this broad field of study for the first time. Technical aspects are given considerable emphasis, particularly in relation cholesterol reporter molecules and to the isolation and study of membrane cholesterol- and sphingomyelin-rich "raft" domains. Cell biological, biochemical and clinical topics are included in this book, which serve to emphasize the acknowledged and important benefits to be gained from the study of cholesterol and cholesterol-binding proteins within the biomedical sciences and the involvement of cholesterol in several clinical disorders.

It is hoped that by presenting this topic in this integrated manner that an appreciation of the fact that there is much more that needs to be taken into account, studied and understood than the widely discussed "bad and good cholesterol" associated, respectively, with the low- and high-density lipoproteins, LDL and HDL.

    The Guide To MIDI Orchestration
    Paul Gilreath, Jim Aikin, Omar Torres | 2004-01-01 00:00:00 | | 1 | Music
The Guide to MIDI Orchestration by Paul Gilreath, 1st edition was released in 1997. Since that time, it has been the premiere text on creating realistic emulations of a symphony orchestra using samplers and computer recording techniques. Recent years have seen huge advances in sampling technology. Likewise, the demands put on the MIDI composer to produce extremely realistic orchestral textures have never been higher. Now in its 3rd edition, The Guide to MIDI Orchestration explains how to merge this ever-expanding technology with the artistry of orchestration to produce the most lifelike recordings possible and is a must-have for anyone who is serious about making orchestral music with samplers and computers. Gilreath takes this difficult task and presents a clear start to finish roadmap that anyone can follow.
The Guide to MIDI Orchestration, 3rd edition is a hardback comprehensive text comprising over 700 pages that progresses from an overview of orchestral history to in-depth discussions of each section of the orchestra. The book is printed with four color process throughout.
Detailed information on each instrument’s timbre, range and uses is included. Specific orchestration techniques are discussed, including how to use the various instruments for accompaniment and melody, how to approach an orchestration from the ground up and how to achieve balance and interest within the orchestration. Gilreath then shifts gears and translates these elements into the MIDI and sampling environment, providing a clear and precise approach that will allow the reader to employ the necessary techniques with assurance. Chapters on studio setup and requirements, effects processing and plug-in considerations, DAW choices and mixing guidelines highlight the text. Detailed reviews and recommendations of orchestral libraries are included. Insightful interviews with mastering engineers Bob Katz and Bob Ludwig provide useful, real-world knowledge that can be implemented in your work on a daily basis. Interviews with library developers Eric Persing, Doug Rogers, Gary Garritan and Herb Tucmadl (among others) give the reader a look into various aspects of the orchestral library development process as well as a glimpse of the future of the industry.
The book is written for composers, arrangers and MIDI musicians of all levels and will be helpful to video game and multi-media composers, film and television composers, traditional orchestral composers, teachers, orchestration and composition students, instructors and the serious hobbyist. The Guide to MIDI Orchestration is a one-of-a-kind text that provides the information necessary to help composers who demand the best achieve successful and realistic MIDI orchestrations. Though this book is not intended to teach in-depth orchestration concepts and techniques, it is an important resource for anyone who routinely works with virtual orchestras. Orchestration techniques are shown in order to facilitate an understanding of how to manipulate MIDI files to obtain the desired result. In addition, for the beginning orchestrator, the book provides basic to intermediate orchestration concepts and examples.

A Designer's Guide to Adobe InDesign and XML: Harness the Power of XML to Automate your Print and Web Workflows

A Designer's Guide to Adobe InDesign and XML: Harness the Power of XML to Automate your Print and Web Workflows
    | 2007-12-14 00:00:00 | | 0 | Adobe InDesign

Is this book for programmers?  Written specifically for graphic designers and production artists already comfortable working with Adobe InDesign, this book teaches you how to automate publishing without learning a lot of scary code. XML simplifies the process of moving content in and out of your layouts and can speed up any print or Web assignment.

Why should I care about XML? If you?re managing data-intensive layout projects, and you want to keep that data consistent, accurate, and up-to-date, then incorporating XML can help. You can also use XML to automate processes like importing text and large numbers of graphics into a layout, or repurposing content from one application to another. Do I need additional plug-ins or special software? You need only the powerful features built into InDesign CS2, CS3 or CS4 to use this book.

    How will I learn XML?
This guide includes nine easy-to-follow projects with downloadable support files. With these hands-on tutorials, you will learn XML in context. By the final project, XML will no longer be a mystery, but a powerful tool you can use to support your company or clients.

These real-world projects will teach you:
l Business cards: Create a structured layout in InDesign and then import XML. Format text automatically and flow the text into multiple examples.
l Product catalog: Learn how to import XML data into a structured layout using nested styles and cloned text.
l Direct mail and variable data printing: Use XML and InDesign to create sophisticated direct mail pieces without costly plug-ins or third-party software.
l Magazine and newspaper: Build and export magazine-style publications for online distribution.
l Web: Transform XML into XHTML to incorporate directly into your Web pages, or use Cascading Style Sheets to instantly format your exported XML.

    Simply the best to start.
all is on the title. I was looking for a first, professional book about XML and Indesign. I don't have seen an other book like this yet.

Really a good book, well done, filled with information to knowing and to keep with you.

    A God send
This book is the most valuable book to all production catalog designers alike! We are part designers and part programers. We like it done fast, efficiently, correct and printable. I am using Adobe Suite 4 and XML is still supported. There are programs that are out there that automatically create catalogs. But if you are savvy enough to learn xml, javascript and a few other small programs, you can be just as powerful. Great book!

    XML in design speak!
This is an outstanding book. Finally, XML explained in terminology that meshes with the way a designer thinks! Get this book and learn how to use this! You'll see a dramatic increase in your production time! (People will think you are super human as well!) I didn't take time to figure out XML in InDesign prior to this book because it was so confusing. This book does a great job exlaining how it works and giving actual examples to learn from.

    Superb
I nearly wept with joy when I read this book. It contains clear guidance to stuff I've been trying to get InDesign CS3 to do for months. They make it look easy - and it is with this book - but if I hadn't tried on my own for so long I wouldn't have appreciated how useful this book is. I would have paid $500 for this and would have considered it a bargain, let along $33.

XML for the Rest of Us!
Despite being an Adobe Certified Instructor in InDesign, I never really understood working with XML until I read this book. Maivald and Palmer have taken an otherwise mysterious language and made it clear and understandable for anyone. This book has no peer and is a must for those interested in harnessing the power of XML.

    The Bliss Factor

    The Bliss Factor
    Penny McCall | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Berkley | 336 | Romance Novels
A fan of Ms. McCall's books like ALL JACKED UP and PACKING HEAT, I was looking forward to her latest offering and she doesn't disappoint.

The idea of hunky undercover agent Connor Larkin having amnesia and believing he's a blacksmith from the 14th century in a contemporay novel is absolutely brilliant. Pair this with snippy and straitlaced Rae Blissfield who ends up trying to watch over a man who clearly can protect himself, witty dialogue and fast paced action, and you've got a well-written blockbuster.

There were plenty of laugh out loud scenes guaranteed to keep you up at night. Smart, sexy and fun-THE BLISS FACTOR is a definite keeper!
