A Concise History of Greece (Cambridge Concise Histories)

A Concise History of Greece (Cambridge Concise Histories)
Richard Clogg | 1992-08-28 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 271 | Greece
This book provides a concise, illustrated introduction to the history of modern Greece, from the first stirrings of the national movement in the late eighteenth century to the present day. It is designed to provide a basic introduction for general and academic readers with little or no prior knowledge of the subject, and supersedes Professor Clogg's Short History of Modern Greece which has become a classic since its initial publication in 1979. This latest account is a wholly new book, conceived afresh for a broad readership, in which the many illustrations with their extensive captions form an important part of the text.
Reviews
If you're looking for a blood and guts tale of the rich history of Greece, this isn't it. However it does seem authoritative and worth keeping on your shelf as a reference text. It reads more like a doctoral thesis, than a lively page-turner, but the main characters in modern Greek history were not bloodless, bland creatures, like Wooldrow Wilson, but tough politicoes, and you get no sense of personality in this book.If the author, Richard Clogg, had gone to Podunk State College instead of Cambridge, he might have been able to breath more life into his writing instead of sounding like the "Enclopedia Brittanica".
Reviews
Richard Clogg provides a rich history in a concise fashion. Highly recommended to students of Greek history for its well documented and supported writing. Factual evidence and sources add to the history, even though concise. I can think of no better short history of Greece. It is a must read for anyone wishing to understand the trends that have molded the modern Greek state and the historical infuences on Greek national identity. Many have written histories of Greece, but few have delved into an anaylsis of the historical trends that have helped to create the Greek world view and national identity.
Reviews
It is well structured, brief and not boring. How could it be? It's about my country's history! It concludes all the history of Greece so anyone could be informed about the facts from 1770-2000.I like the way it presents the destruction of Smyrna and the exchange of populations.

There are enough pictures and drawings as well. There are not enough about the recent history, but I was totally impressed when I saw at least few pages about the students occupation in Athens Polytechnic in 1973. I enjoyed it very much considering that in greek schools there is not even a little paragraph about this occupation.

Finally, I think the tables at the last pages of the book are quite useful for anyone who wants to search more or compare to.
Reviews
A very interesting and concise history of Greece from the 18th century to the present. It includes detailed examinations of all the major turning points in Greek history in the last three hundred years; the Greek war of independence, Greece under the Nazis, the Greek Civil War and the dictatorship. All of the important passions that have overcome the Greeks are woven into the story as is the story of the destruction of the Greek peoples of Anatolia (The Pontic Greeks and Smyrna Greeks and others) as well as the ethnic-cleansing of Greeks by the Turks from places such as Adrianople, Constantinople and Rumania and Bulgaria. The conflict over Macedonia is highlighted as is the tragic story of the 100,000 strong Greek community of Egypt that was also cleansed by the Nasser regime.

A fascinating history,

Seth J. Frantzman
Reviews
Now in an expanded second edition, A Concise History Of Greece by Richard Clogg (Fellow of St. Anthony's College, Oxford University, England) is a straightforward, scholarly chronicle of the modern history of Greece, ranging from the Ottoman rule of the late 1700's, to the pressures of Balkan strife and political modernization of the present day. Deftly written and carefully researched, supplemented with tables, short biographies, as well as a listing of the royal houses of Greece, A Concise History Of Greece is an excellent and scholarly survey of the modern growth of the nation which is a strongly recommended addition to academic World History collections in general, and Hellenic History supplemental reading lists in particular.

Archaeology in the Lowland American Tropics: Current Analytical Methods and Applications

Archaeology in the Lowland American Tropics: Current Analytical Methods and Applications
Peter W. Stahl | 2006-11-02 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 332 | Native American
The lowland American tropics have posed great challenges for archaeologists. Working in awkward terrain, in humid conditions where preservation is difficult, modern scholars pioneered new methods that increasingly influence archaeological practice internationally. The contributors to this volume all have substantial experience in the region. Their essays explore problems including site discovery, excavation, the preservation of artifacts, and methods of analysis. This book will be welcomed by all archaeologists, ecologists and paleontologists working in the tropics.
Reviews
The collapse of the Clovis paradigm has meant, among a great deal of other things,a re-evaluation of lowland tropical American archaeology. This is an invaluable and comprehensive guide to the field, which provides judicious analysis of recent research as well as very useful intellectual histories of debates. The very extensive bibliography is especially useful. My own interests are in the environmental history of the Amazon, and I found the chapters by Erickson, Bray, Pearsall and Piperno especially helpful. My only criticism is one of omission: I think a contextualising chapter putting the developments in lowland South American archaeology in a wider continental and hemispheric context would have been useful, especially since one of the most interesting implications of recent developments elsewhere is not the uniqueness of the lowlands, but the parallels between the South American lowlands and similar environments elsewhere in the Americas, such as the mound complexes and drained fields of the Mississippi valley. Nevertheless, a fitting and appropriate memorial to Donald Lathrap. David Cleary Harvard University

Home Possessions

Home Possessions
Daniel Miller | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Berg Publishers | 256 | Decorating
Although so much of the life we care about takes place at home, this private space often remains behind closed doors and is notoriously difficult for researchers to infiltrate. We may think it is just up to us to decorate, transform and construct out homes, but in this book we discover a new form of "estate agency," the active participation of the home and its material culture in the construction of our lives. What do the possessions people choose to take with them when moving say about who they are, and should we emphasize the mobility of a move or the stability of what movers take with them? How is the home an active partner in developing relationships? Why are our homes sometimes haunted by ghosts?

This intriguing book is a rare behind-the-scenes exposé of the domestic sphere across a range of cultures. Examples come from working class housewives in Norway, a tribal society in Taiwan, a museum in London, tenants in Canada and students from Greece, to produce a genuinely comparative perspective based in every case on sustained fieldwork. Japan, long thought to be a nation that idealizes uncluttered simplicity, is shown behind closed doors to harbor illicit pockets of disorganization, while the warmth inside Romanian apartments is used to expel the presence of the state.

Representing a vital development in the study of material culture, this book clearly shows that we may think we possess our homes, but our homes more likely possess us.

Spatial and Social Disparities

Spatial and Social Disparities
John Stillwell, Paul Norman | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 300 | Geosciences
Inequality is one of the major problems of the contemporary world. Significant geographical disparities exist within nations of the developed world, as well as between these countries and those referred to as the ‘South’ in the Bruntland Report. Issues of equity and deprivation must be addressed in view of sustainable development. However, before policymakers can remove the obstacles to a fairer world, it is essential to understand the nature of inequality, both in terms of its spatial and socio-demographic characteristics.

This second volume in the series contains population studies that examine the disparities evident across geographical space in the UK and between different individuals or groups. Topics include demographic and social change, deprivation, happiness, cultural consumption, ethnicity, gender, employment, health, religion, education and social values. These topics and the relationships between them are explored using secondary data from censuses, surveys or administrative records.

Value-Focused Business Process Engineering

Value-Focused Business Process Engineering
Dina Neiger, Leonid Churilov, and Andrew Flitman | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 284 | Management
One of the keys to successful business process engineering is tight alignment of processes with organisational goals and values. Historically, however, it has always been difficult to relate different levels of organizational processes to the strategic and operational objectives of a complex organization with many interrelated and interdependent processes and goals. This lack of integration is especially well recognized within the Human Resource Management (HRM) discipline, where there is a clearly defined need for greater alignment of HRM processes with the overall organizational objectives.

Value-Focused Business Process Engineering is a monograph that combines and extends the best on offer in Information Systems and Operations Research/Decision Sciences modelling paradigms to facilitate gains in both business efficiency and business effectiveness.

The first part of the book examines a wide range of research issues in modelling business processes and objectives by expanding the focus of business process engineering from creating more efficient business processes to also making them more effective. The second part of the book presents methodology and tools for a holistic approach to business process engineering within the HRM context. The original contribution of the value-focused process engineering methodology lies in the integration of the best aspects of event-process driven chains and the value-focused thinking within a single model, in a way that preserves the strengths of the respective models while facilitating the emergence of new properties that satisfy goal-oriented business process modelling requirements.

The result is an up-to-date expository monograph that provides industry practitioners and researchers in OR/MS and IS domains, as well as those concerned with the practice of HRM, with a framework and implementation guidelines for ensuring that day-to-day business activities are congruent with organizational values and strategic objectives.

Getting the Best out of Your Juicer

Getting the Best out of Your Juicer
William H. Lee | 1998-11-11 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill | 176 | Juice
Use of a variety of juices can enhance various diets, even the most healthful, and juices have been shown to help relieve or prevent the widest range of ailments, from heaqdaches to cancer.
Reviews
I just started juicing and wanted a basic Juice book to start with. This book was perfect. I didn't want to spend hours reading about the wonders of juicing and all that sort of fluff. This book has very little fluff then talks about what nutrition most fruits and veggies offer in alphabetical order. There are also recipes separated by type of problems you have, along with just good tasting recipes. So now, when my husband asks why I'm adding parsley to his orange juice, I can pop open my book and tell him "It's loaded with chlorophyll, vitamins A & C, and a host of minerals including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and sulpher."
Reviews
This book is a nice addition for anyone who has a juicer. It provides an overview of the benefits of several different types of fruits and veggies. It also describes fruit juice "cures" for different ailments (including hangovers).

Julie Stafford also has written a solid book on juicing that might be an alternative. The advantage of Stafford's book (relative to this one) is that she organizes the recipe by the fruit or vegetable (rather than by ailment). When shopping, it is a bit more helpful to have the stafford book handy, though both books provide very similar recipes.
Reviews
there are many books on the topic juice book, and non of them that i have seen ,is coming near that book. this book is giving the reader the knoledge of the nutrition values, as well as the therapeutic aspects of each single fruit or vegetable, as well as for the mixed fruits and or vegetables as a healthy healing juices. there is also a section of diseases that are treated by specific fruits or vegetables juice combination.the reason of the healing properties for each juice is also explain in a very simple, and easy to understand, plus a small section that is telling you what kind of a juicer is the most suitable to your specific needs.in short, and in general, this book is a comprehansive yet simple and correct, and easy to follow book, and you have my best recommandation.i am on my way to the juicer.

Philosophers on Race: Critical Essays

Philosophers on Race: Critical Essays
Julie K. Ward,Tommy L. Lott | 2002-03-08 00:00:00 | Wiley-Blackwell | 336 | Philosophy
This volume adds a new dimension to current research on race theory by examining its historical roots in the works of major Western philosophers.

The essays included in this book span a wide range of topics, including the opposition between Greek and "barbarian" in the works of Plato and Aristotle, the notion of racial difference employed in medieval Islamic thought, as well as the existence of racial categories within the social contract and Enlightenment theories of Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Kant. The readings also discuss repercussions in the post-Enlightenment period in the views of Nietzsche, Mill, and Carlyle, and twentieth-century reflections on race in the thought of Heidegger, Dewey, Sartre, and Beauvoir. Philosophers on Race contributes to the increasing debate on the subject of race by elucidating the philosophical origins of race in Greek and medieval thought and the subsequent development of racial categories in modern Western philosophy.
Reviews
Although it probably wasn't brought up when you took a philosophy class in college, many famous philosophers have made blatantly racist remarks in their writings. For example, Hobbes justified colonial conquests, and Hume, Kant and Hegel made notoriously odious remarks about Africans. In this very significant collection of essays, Julie Ward and Tommy Lott (who each contribute one essay to the collection, as well) have gathered extremely well-researched statements by noteworthy scholars on the subject.

We learn, for example, that "Although Locke did not own slaves, he did buy (and sell at a profit) shares in ... slave-trading companies." In Locke's famous Essay Concerning Human Understanding, he wrote that American Indians "are confined to a few simple ideas or a few abstract ideas, as akin to animals." Kant wrote, "The [...] can be disciplined and cultivated, but is never genuinely civilized. He falls of his own accord into savagery."

The collection of essays is very well-balanced, and diverse: some of the essays are, "Race and Genos in Plato," "Aristotle and Race," "Medieval Muslim Philosophers on Race," "Locke and the Dispossession of the American Indian," "Liberalism's Limits: Carlyle and Mill on 'The [...] Question,'" "Heidegger and the Jewish Question," and more.

The scholars are scrupulously fair in their asessments. For example, in his essay, "Kant as an Unfamiliar Source of Racism," Robert Bernasconi observes that "It is extraordinary that Hume's racism has received more attention than Kant's, even though Hume's racism is much less extensive than Kant's and far less integrated into his philosophy." He also comments, "I am aware of no direct statement of Kant calling for the abolition of either African slavery or the slave trade, even if only in principle."

This is a book that, although it is disquieting to read statements from a philosopher that one respects which literally turn one's stomach, is very important for anyone interested in the history of philosophy, philosophical biographies, ethnic studies, racism, or society in general. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Statistics for Nuclear and Particle Physicists

Statistics for Nuclear and Particle Physicists
Louis Lyons | 1986-03-31 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 236 | Nuclear Physics
Written by a non-statistician for non-statisticians, the book emphasizes the practical approach to those problems in statistics that arise regularly in data analysis situations in nuclear and high energy physics experiments. Rather than concentrate on proofs and theorems, the author provides an abundance of simple examples that illustrate the general ideas presented. This allows the reader to obtain maximum information in the simplest manner. Possible difficulties with the various techniques, and pitfalls to be avoided, are also discussed. This commonsense approach to statistical formalism enables nuclear physicists to better understand how to do justice to their analysis and interpretation of data.
Reviews
A book with clear graphs and good example which help the reader to get both knowledge and skills of statistics. It would be really helpful for real research work.
Reviews
As a high energy physics graduate student, I know of no other book which provides a better grounding in the data analysis techniques needed in an HEP phd. This book has been invaluable to me. It has also been invaluable to many of my professors and friends. If you are doing an HEP phd, you should get this book. Its as simple as that.

Structure Function Relationships of Human Pathogenic Viruses

Structure Function Relationships of Human Pathogenic Viruses
Andreas Holzenburg,Elke Bogner | 2002-06-15 00:00:00 | Springer | 526 | Internal Medicine

Structure-Function Relationships of Human Pathogenic Viruses provides information on the mechanisms by which viruses enter the cell, replicate, package their DNA into capsids and mature into new virions. The relation between structural features and the pathogenicity and oncogenicity of some of the most relevant human viral pathogens are demonstrated and the acquisition of defense mechanisms through virus-host interactions are presented. In contrast to textbooks, this volume combines timely research data to provide a holistic view of viral pathogenesis.

Furthermore Structure-Function Relationships of Human Pathogenic Viruses illustrates in a single volume the fundamental processes involved in viral life cycles using up-to-date information from research laboratories around the world. Knowledge of these processes is crucial to develop rationales for the design of future drugs. The timeliness of the data and the comprehensive yet concise approach this book takes in order to present the world of viral pathogens should make it a frontrunner in higher education and R&D.

Reviews
"this book...contains a series of reviews, each of which uses a well-characterized virus to illustrate the fundamental processes involved in viral life cycles...the volume brings together several interesting topics under one cover."

Applying mathematics to biology has a long history, but only recently has there been an explosion of interest in the field. Some reasons for this include: the explosion of data-rich information sets, due to the genomics revolution, which are difficult to understand without the use of analytical tools, recent development of mathematical tools such as chaos theory to help understand complex, non-linear mechanisms in biology, an increase in computing power which enables calculations and simulations to be performed that were not previously possible, and an increasing interest in in-silico experimentation due to the complications involved in human and animal research.

Rockefeller, Morgan, Vanderbilt, Carnegie, Harriman, Gould, Frick...this is the story of the giant american capitalists who seized economic power after the Civil War and altered the shape of american life forever. Index.

Reviews
This book is a classic of denegration based on ideology. The author does not understand that the only way to create wealth is to please other people and chooses to ignore the fact that a handful of people think and are willing to invest their time and money on their knowledge. The entrepreneurs made the United States the most powerful country in the history of the world and are continuously berated by those who haven't the courage to compete in the open market place!
Reviews
This book - "The Robber Barons" - was supposed to be in good condition. It arrived with scotch tape on the cover and looked old, dog-eared, and not carefully used. The sellers comments were "Limited marks in text. Spine uncreased" Condition: Used - Good. No mention of tape, scraped spine and age. I would have listed it as Fair. Yes, it is readable, but it is the tackiest looking book I've bought from Amazon with a listing of "Good" condition.
Reviews
This chronicles the post civil war to early 1900s greed grab of some of the greatest scoundrels in American history. Vanderbilt, Astor, Rockefeller, Carnegie, J.P Morgan, Harriman, and the slithery Jay Gould. Immoral Capitalist pig scumbags who made money no matter what the cost (to others) through steel, oil, banking, coal and especially through the railroads. At that time if you controlled the railroads you 100% controlled all shipping and movement of goods so they got their cut even if it wasn't an industry that they had a controlling interest in. Some of these peoples descendents are currently at the top of the food chain of the criminal globalist network that currently controls the world.

There was some but not enough in this about how they screwed over the working man and consumer but it was laugh out loud funny to see how they would backstab each other. In some cases they took great delight in completely destroying the very people who gave them their first break so they could get their feet in the door in the world of big business. It was funny to see how they would slander anybody who opposed them with the communist (never mind that these uber-capitalists had a huge hand in funding various communist revolutions themselves) slur, which worked well for these types well into the 1970s. Now the same types throw around terms like racist and terrorist in the same way at anybody that opposes them. Also it was not surprising to see how these same types then, as they do now, use immigration and the Christian church to their advantage. One thing I would liked to have seen in this book which wasn't even touched on is the belief many have that most of the Robber Barons were creations of and lackeys for banking houses based in Britain and Europe but overall this was an excellent book.
Reviews
Of course this book is famous. Josephson coined the term 'Robber Baron'. What is fascinating and important about this book is;

a) It confirms the paradox that many of the best writers of the history of business and capitalism are socialists or communists. Marx, Lenin, Hobsbawm, Dreiser, Galbraith, etc. Their writing is addictive. I have read Josephson's book multiple times for the sheer pleasure of his style as I have the books of Eric Hobsbawm. The irony is that these authors have probably done more to enthuse young and aspiring tycoons than discourage them. Much like Oliver Stone's shock at discovering that Gordon Geko became a hero to an entire generation of Wall Street traders.

b) It, along with the books of the other gifted writers, was totally wrong. The reason why their predictions on the end of capitalism failed to materialize is because the 'facts' they base their forecasts on were not facts after all. What we now know, and much of this was known in Josephson's time, is that the crimes of the Gould's, Vanderbilt's, etc were pure fantasy or at best exaggerations. It simply did not happen that way. These men simply were not the 'robbers' of Josephson's imagination.

c) Its wonderful writing style actually inspired a future generation of pro-capitalist authors to reach for the same level of writing excellence. Such is the irony of history and the law of unintended consequences.
Reviews
A book this durable probably deserves a decent rating just for being able to tough it through all these decades. Overall, Mr. Josephson's book has the features of Karl Marx's practical prescriptions for a capitalist economy, without much of Marx's considerable understanding about the creation of capital. Since Marx did make an outstanding analysis of the genesis and growth of capital in market economies (at least at that time), but faltered badly on the "prescription" part, Josephson's book clearly needs other features to recommend it.

One of those is the smooth style in which "Robber Barons" is written. Josephson is interesting, although not reliably authoritative. Every good writer knows the value of including stories within nonfiction, and this author does a quite creditable job here. Stories glue nonfiction subsection together well, making the reading often less dry. Unlike most of my reviews, I shall excerpt some pieces from "Robber Barons" to show the book's heavy slant:

· On page 7, right off the bat, he speaks about the "sordid and practical materialism" of entrepreneurs.

· Entrepreneurs' "keen eyes" would swoop down and offer better rates and services (during the story of Cornelius Vanderbilt, p13).

· Smart business practice caused, "activity, volume, lower prices vs. honest, but limited services at higher tariffs," p16. [Good grief!]

· Railroads were rich, but people were poor (during the later 19th century), p253.

· In a humorously odd twist, the author called WWI a period of peace for big businessmen; post-war saw the revival of domestic warfare again (p418). Remember the movie "Dr. Strangelove"? Near the end, the US president tells a scuffling military officer and the Soviet ambassador, "Gentlemen! You can't fight in the war room!" Same odd reversal.

Unfortunately, the book consists mostly of similar points of view.

Let's be fair. "Robber Barons" was written in the late Depression in the US. At that time, there was considerable radical frustration with the US economy. Much of that frustration came from persons like the author, who truly wished the FDR programs to work. Few ever did by any measure. Seen in this light, "Robber Barons" makes sense. Give the author a break.

The Peopling of Britain: The Shaping of a Human Landscape (The Linacre Lectures)
Paul Slack,Ryk Ward | 2002-05-16 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 312 | England
This volume reviews the way in which, over the centuries, the evolving human presence in Britain has shaped the British landscape and how, in turn, the British landscape has molded the development of British communities. The chapters in this book - by archaeologists, historians, and geographers - present an interdisciplinary and accessible account of that long process. Together they trace the various phases of the story, showing how much of it has only recently been unearthed, and how much remains to be discovered.

The Concept of Probability in Statistical Physics (Cambridge Studies in Probability, Induction and Decision Theory)

The Concept of Probability in Statistical Physics (Cambridge Studies in Probability, Induction and Decision Theory)
Y. M. Guttmann | 1999-07-13 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 280 | Philosophy
Foundational issues in statistical mechanics and the more general question of how probability is to be understood in the context of physical theories are both areas that have been neglected by philosophers of physics. This book fills an important gap in the literature by providing the most systematic study to date of how to interpret probabilistic assertions in the context of statistical mechanics. The book will be of particular interest to philosophers of science, physicists and mathematicians interested in foundational issues, and also to historians of science.
Reviews
As a specialist on statistical physics and its history, I found this book rather disappointing, misleading and conceptually confused. Be warned that the book is evidently written from a specific perspective of a philosopher who strongly prefers an ontic ("frequentists") interpretation of probability, basically in a spirit of the old Boltzmann-Ehrenfest ideology and its conceptual difficulties. Consequently, Guttmann puts undue emphasis on struggles with ergodicity, coarse-graining, etc., whilst not showing too much sympathy and understanding for epistemically thinking schools of statistical physics (Gibbs, Bohr, Schroedinger, Jaynes, etc.).

One of principal Guttmann's mistakes was his choice of a language he uses for labelling different interpretations of probability. His labelling by the terms "objective" and "subjective" is doomed to failure from the very beginning, and just adds to some old confusions and misunderstandings. In the real-world statistical physics, it is easy to show that the ontic nterpretations of probabilities always possess many "subjective" aspects whilst the epistemic views of probabilities bring some important "objective" aspects. Thus, any finer discussion of different interpretations of probabilities in physics can hardly be rationally based on the naive and misleading "subjective" vs. "objective" labelling.

The book is particularly far from reality when dealing with Edwin T. Jaynes and his information-theoretic interpretation of statistical mechanics. It almost seems that Guttmann's major motivation for writting the book was his obvious hostility to Jaynes' ideas. Guttmann is double-wrong concerning Jaynes: he is wrong about true Jaynes' probabilistic legacy, opinions and interpretations. But he is also confusing the very rationale of statistical physics. It is just paradoxical that Guttmann uses a label "ultra-subjective" for a man who contributed more than anybody after Gibbs to clarify, rationalize and generalize the whole subject of statistical physics. Guttmann is just repeating some old misunderstandings and naive attacks (e.g., by Uhlenbeck, Shimony, Friedman or Seidenfeld) which Jaynes analyzed in details in his many papers. However, these important papers are not even mentioned by Guttmann.

Relatively more successfull, original and interesting appears the Ch. 4, Measure and Topology in Statistical Mechanics.

In summary, Guttmann's book does contain some valuable reference material, and the very topic of the book is extremely important. Unfortunately, Dr. Guttmann did not succeed to elaborate a concise and logical view of the topic, but rather added his own confusions and misunderstandings concerning different conceptual aspects of probability theory in statistical physics. Fundamentally distorted and biased is his treatment of Jaynes' ideas, his interpretation of Gibbs method, and his perception of epistemic probabilities in physics in general.

Turn Up the Heat: Unlock the Fat-Burning Power of Your Metabolism

Turn Up the Heat: Unlock the Fat-Burning Power of Your Metabolism
Philip L. Goglia | 2003-05-27 00:00:00 | Plume | 384 | Diets
Discover the program that has worked for hundreds of thousands of people, including countless celebrities and athletes, helping them to achieve permanent weight loss and healthier lives.

Turn Up the Heat provides a thoroughly documented food management system personalized to each individual's metabolic type-fat-and-protein efficient, carbohydrate efficient, or dually efficient. The system is comprised of three components: eating the right kinds and amounts of foods in the correct sequence; following a specific exercise program based on the individual's metabolic type; and drinking the appropriate amount of water daily. Including easy-to-use questionnaires to determine your metabolic type, weekly food plans, and a 2-week Quickstart plan, Turn Up the Heat will forever break the apathy and frustration of dieters who just never seem to get to their ideal weight.
Reviews
Whenever you see a new diet program - especially one that promises to be tailored just for you - you get all excited. However, after perusing this book, I can tell this is the "same old, same old" - basically eat more protein and cut out carbs.

Dr. Goglia tries to convince the reader that there are "3 TYPES OF METABOLISM" in the population. It's very confusing according to his criteria to determine which type you are. However, he says that 74% of the population are the "Fat-and-Protein-Efficient Types." All this means is that, for most people, we eat too many carbs and not enough protein. So, you need to add more protein in the form of fish, chicken, eggs and nuts to your diet and cut down on sugars, even fruit, but especially yeast breads. This is no great surprise. I think most Americans know we eat too many carbs and that we're actually addicted to them.

This is the basic plan for most people:

Meal 1: Grain (like oatmeal) & Fruit & Meat

Meal 2: Fruit & Nuts

Meal 3: Grain & Meat & Veggie

Meal 4: Fruit & Nuts

Meal 5: Grain & Meat & Veggie

Meal 6: Grain & Fruit (You eventually eliminate this fruit/meal.)

Plus, you are suppose to drink an oz. of water for every pound you weigh. If you weigh 160, that would be 160 oz. or 20 glasses of 8 oz. a day. Even when I purposefully try to drink more water, I can't hit this level (I'd be in the ladies' room all the time if I did).

I'll save you the cost of the book: eat more protein (easy on fatty cuts of beef), cut down on carbs (even fruit) as much as possible, and drink more water. It's a cardinal sin to eat breads that have yeast in them.

Here's the easy version of this diet: Try to eat some protein with each meal (6 times a day) in the form of nuts, cheese, eggs, etc. This will slow down the metabolism of carbs and be more satiating, and you won't crave sugar as much. Eat a limited amount of fruit for your sugar (but not cakes and other refined carbs).

On a side note, the quality of this book is poor. There were a lot of typos.
Reviews
Love this, makes sense and I am seeing changes in my body in only a week and a half!
Reviews
As a weightlifter/powerlifter, I've been preaching all of the same things Phil says for several years. The book is spot-on and a fairly easy read. Follow the diet and exercise plan, weight/inches come off and muscles grow.

For the begginer that wants to "get in shape" - lose weight and build some muscle - this book is a great guide.
Reviews
This book was an interesting read. Not only are there ways to change

eatiing habits but also excersize options. The reader has to determine whether or not they are willing to invest the time and

energy to see this diet thru till it starts to work.
Reviews
The book wasn't easy to locate, but I had no trouble at Amazon. I had seen an interview with the author, and wanted more information. The book contains lots of information, some more helpful that others, but I am disappointed that the bulk of the book is meal plans and charts.

Computer Networking Illuminated (Jones and Bartlett Illuminated)

Computer Networking Illuminated (Jones and Bartlett Illuminated)
| 2005-04-25 00:00:00 | | 0 | Networks

Computer Networking Illuminated provides a practical, hands-on introduction to the fundamental concepts, technologies, and applications of networks. Combining many years of professional and academic expertise, the authors have written an easy-to-understand text covering the basics of data communication, network topologies, protocols, security, routing and switching, naming and addressing, troubleshooting, and much more. Key concepts are reinforced by numerous Challenge Exercises, which allow students to gain hands-on experience with networking tools and utilities, and Challenge Scenarios, which help them pull together everything they?ve learned and apply their knowledge to real-world situations they?ll encounter in the workplace. With strong pedagogy throughout -- including many illustrations, step-by-step examples, and screen shots to convey important concepts -- the book is ideal for undergraduate networking courses or as a self-study guide.

Great transaction
The seller was great! They really tried to work with me. The book was in great condition and delivery was very fast!

User review
Used it as a text for two years, found it lacking in depth
Several years ago, on very short notice I took over the teaching of the networking classes offered at the college where I teach. With no syllabus or any other guidance to give me a place to start, I had to select the textbook and try to develop the content as I went. Without a great deal of investigation, I selected this book as the text.

I used it for two years, growing increasingly dissatisfied with how it presented the principles of networking. In my opinion, to understand networking you must have a thorough understanding of the seven layers of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model and the structure of the primary protocols used to create messages between computers. In my class, I delve as deeply as possible into these topics. As I found myself writing longer and more detailed supplements, I decided that it made sense for me to complete the creation of what I wanted to use.

I also wanted to give students as much hands-on experience as possible, so I used Cisco Configmaker, which allowed them to create networks using simulations of the Cisco devices. Therefore, after the second year, I dropped this as a textbook, using my handouts instead. With almost no coverage of IPv6 and other technologies such as SOAP, XML, HTTP, UTF-8, XDR, SCTP and little explanation of the common ways networks are attacked, I will not be using this book again.

User review
see the sections on the Internet
Barrett offers you a nice coverage of the most common types of computer networks existing today. The book is written mostly for the electrical engineer or perhaps the computer scientist.

There is a nice, easy start with the basics of wave propagation. Nothing that a physicist would call deep, perhaps. But in EE or CS, and at the level of this book's intended audience, it's a good level of detail. Then, she rapidly goes into Asynchronous Transport Mode, SONET and [of course] TCP/IP. The latter being the Internet. Possibly for most of you, it is the Internet sections that will be of interest. The Internet version 4 is explained. Along with a brief synopsis on the 128 bit version 6.

Barrett also takes you into the higher levels. Of what it means to run a network. And how to defend it against malware attacks. These latter sections of the book are more about software issues. With a warning about social engineering as one attack vector against your users.

Contemporary French Philosophy: Modernity and the Persistence of the Subject (Continuum Collection)

Contemporary French Philosophy: Modernity and the Persistence of the Subject (Continuum Collection)
Caroline Williams | 2005-12-01 00:00:00 | Continuum | 272 | Philosophy
French philosophy and cultural theory continue to hold a prestigious and influential position in European thought. One of the central themes of contemporary French philosophy is its concern with the theoretical and political status of the subject, a question which has been broached by structuralists and poststructuralists through an analysis of the construction of the subject in and by language, discourse, power and ideology. Contemporary French Philosophy outlines the construction of the subject in modern philosophy, focusing in particular on the seminal work of Althusser, Lacan, Derrida and Foucault. The book interrogates some of the most influential perspectives on the question of the subject to contest those postmodern voices which announce its disappearance or death. It argues instead that the question of the subject persists, even in those perspectives which seek to abandon it altogether. Providing a broad introduction to the field and an original analysis of some of the most influential theorists of the 20th Century, the book will be of great interest to political and literary theorists, cultural historians, as well as to philosophers.
Reviews
An ambitious but successful project. This critical overview of contemporary french thought focuses on the continuing role of the subject and traces the overlap and the distance between the theories of Althusser, Lacan, Derrida, Foucault and situates them in relation to the thought of Spinoza, Hegel and brings in the works of many other contemporary figures. This study is great for bringing out key themes in an instructive and critical manner, especially for the student who is advanced in philosophy but lacks specialized knowledge in this area of thought. A great introduction into current debates on subjectivity, the unconscious, language and social structures, etc... and surely of interest to those with a deeper background as well.

The Teen Survival Guide To Dating & Relating: Real-World Advice on Guys, Girls, Growing Up, and Getting Along

The Teen Survival Guide To Dating & Relating: Real-World Advice on Guys, Girls, Growing Up, and Getting Along
Annie Fox,Elizabeth Verdick | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Free Spirit Publishing | 244 | Social Issues
Answers letters received by Talk City's "The InSite" and provides advice about dealing with authority figures, handling problems with parents and siblings, making a relationship work, finding and keeping real friends, sex, and more topics important to teens.
Reviews
From author Annie Fox: This book was first published as Can You Relate? in 2000. In 2005 it was re-released as The Teen Survival Guide to Dating and Relating. It went out of print in 2008. That's the way things go sometimes. Instead of letting all this truly great relationship information vanish forever, I decided to give it away for FREE. No strings attached. So here it is. Everything you need to know about getting along better with yourself and everyone else. This book is for you. It's a gift. Yours to read wherever you want. Hopefully you'll think about what you read. See how it applies to situations you've already been in. Remember the stuff that makes the most sense to you because you never know when you might need it. And if you've got friends who could use help sorting out their feelings, pass it on to them. That's what friends are for. [...]
Reviews
This book is full of useful information for teens, and presented in a manner that appeals to teens. The illustrations are helpful and specific to different situations common for teens. The advice is practical and

logical with consequences of choices clearly explained but not preachy.

The teen reader is treated with respect for his or her growing independence. I highly recommend this book for parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, to give to their young family members, students, and friends.
Reviews
This really is a book for anyone, and given to me by a friend, I was suprised with just how much I learnt.

The book gives advice for all kinds of relationships, with real life examples from letters she has recieved and answered. Its not the cheesy "Dear Abby" (well "Dear Deidre" in Britain) that you read in the newspaper, nor does it tell you what you HAVE to do. Instead Annie helps you to listen to your inner voice and be respectful in each of your relationships, along with more common sense advice, that its perhaps easy to forget.

It has helped to highlight key areas in my current and past relationships that were problamatic, and whilst giving me the determination to improve on these, also helped confirm what I was getting right. In both ways the book has helped me with relating better to my friends and family...So thanks Annie!

Finally this is an invalueable source for you to find further help, either on the internet, by phone, or even writing to Terra herself. I hope the books a huge success, then perhaps we'll have more of Annie's insightful advice soon ?
Reviews
I LOVED this book! With the ease that the author "related" to the letters that she recieved from teens all around the world, I wouldn't be surprised if she was one herself. Every teen and every parent with a teen should read this book. The information in here is invaluable.

Reviews
MANY OF THE K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Series), books are excellent. Some are not that good. But ALL of them have the tagline: "The Only _____(fill in ssubject) Book You'll Ever Need".

"The K.I.S.S. Guide To Astrology", by Julia & Derek Parker, DOES live up, (delightfully!), to the K.I.S.S. motto! (Or at least for beginners, like me!) Full of delightful, beautiful, and thoughtful illustrations and charts, this book is full of easy-to-understand text, large print, good paper, and a binding which could be a BIT stronger, but is perfectly adequate if you do not pile other books on top of it! The chapters begin by going into astrological data with which even beginners are familiar, (the 12 sign of the zodiac, their encompassing dates during the year, and the basic personality each sign encompasses), and then go on to far more complex, (but always easily explained and understood), material, such as the various signs "at work", and what it means when another sign of the zodiac enters your "house". The Appendix is filled with detailed, (and I do

mean DETAILED!) charts on such things as 'Planetary Tables', "Moon Tables", and "How To Find Your Midheaven". These charts are in necessairily(????) teeny-tiny print size, (no, NOT necessairily, I don't think, as an even slighly larger type size would be very welcome), but the charts are in clear type, which can be read through magnifying glasses if necessary....) This is followed by a few pages of 'More Resources', on selected Books, Schools, Bookstores, and Organizations, (in the USA, Canada, the UK, and Australia!), and give complete addresses, phone numbers, and websites, where available. Herein is also inluded a selection of selected websites, for information on General Astrology, Astrological Books and Magazines, Astrological Newsgroups, Astrological Schools On-Line, Astrological Theories and Techniques, Sports, Weather, Medical, Psychological and Financial Astrology, and also an intriguing site for Horary Astrology, which, the book explains, is the art of asking a question and getting the answer from a drawn-up astrological chart. There follows, (as in all of the K.I.S.S. books I have encountered), a full index, and a list of Acknowlegements.

Some people say that astrology is really only a myth, because new planets, (namely Pluto and Neptune), have been discovered since ancient times, when astrology first began, and, anyway, the planets and stars have MOVED! Perhaps so -- but then, I think modern astrologers have changed their knowledge basis these new facts into consideration. All I know is that, whenever I read a basic description of my own Sun-Sign, it's so accurate, it almost looks like a psychological profile! However, I believe that one should not be "hemmed in" by the proclivities one is said to have, from one's astrological chart. An astrological sign or chart, to me, ONLY tells you what your habits, talents, and liabilities probably are; what you DO with these things is totally up to each individual! The authors of this book write with the same basic philosophy!

There is a great deal of information in this book's 429 pages. It may not get you an astrologist's certification -- but it can give you a basic, (and probably more than a basic), understanding of astrological ideas and protocols, if you truly apply yourself to this book, and read ALL the information in it. It can lead you to other sources, if you feel you need them. But there is SO much good, basic, and supra-basic information in this book that it reminds me of a (true!) story I once heard about a legal secretary.... This lady had been a legal secretary for about 20 years -- and now she wanted to become a lawyer. One cannot become a lawyer merely by graduating law school -- though that undoubtedly helps. No -- the crucial step in becoming a lawyer is, of course, to pass the bar exam. (J.F.K. Jr -- despite being brilliant and knowledgeable -- had to three times before he passed it.) But this lady -- with NO law school study at all, and her 20 years as a legal secretary as her ONLY legal knowedge -- passed the bar exam the very FIRST time. : ) I don't know if examinations are more crucial than a diploma, in astrological circles o not -- but if you read this book carefully and thoroughly, your astrological knowledge will certainly be far past the beginner's stage...and will make any further reading or training you desire, that much more easy to understand. Your knowlege, with this book, will increase astrologically -- er, I mean, astronomically! ** : )

P.S.: I have looked on the website of the DK Company, and it seems they are now not now reprinting too many of their excellent K.I.S.S. books. I hope they will change their mind, soon, so that more people can be sure of getting this, and other excellent K.I.S.S. books!

I have both Parker's Astrology and this book by the same author. Why buy this one if I already had the other? Well DK puts out good books for people who are left handed. ie right brain people. We tend to be able to grasp things faster with visual aids. In that respect this book was easyer to use than Parker's even though it essentially had about the same information. What makes me torn between the two? They didn't include the chart progression in this book and if they had I'd probably have given it a 5 instead of a 4.

If your interested in astrology and working your own chart by hand this book will help you do that much. It will also give you some information about what it all means. But unlike the first book Parker's Astrology it will not tell you how to progress the chart. if you just want to a copy of your natal chart though you can get it free at www.astro.com in minutes and the same results as doing it yourself. This a good book for all us right brained people who wanted to learn how to do it ourselves though.

This is an excellent general knowledge book. Great if you don't know a lot about astrology and want to learn. Like all DK books this one is illustrated beautifully.

This is a good book to buy if you want to know more than the sun signs, but aren't sure where to start.

If you are familiar with Parker's Astrology, this book is by the same authors and is similiar to it, but it is smaller and on a more basic level than the former, which is good for somebody brand new to astrology.

Personally I prefer Parker's; it's more comprehensive--I don't want two books on my shelf that are so similiar. But like I said, this may be a great choice if you don't want to spend a lot of money and aren't sure if you are ready for the more detailed aspects of astrology.

I never understood my friends' fascination with Astrology until I was given this great book. This Kiss guide is so easy to read that I devoured the entire book in one weekend, and now I'm an Astrology fanatic!
