Personal Firewalls for Administrators and Remote Users

Personal Firewalls for Administrators and Remote Users
| 1969-12-31 00:00:00 | | 0 | Network Security

While corporate system administrators spend lots of time thinking about enterprise firewall systems for their in-house employees, a vulnerability that is often overlooked is the remote employee's unprotected computer system, the unprotected computers of mobile laptop users (employees on the road) and all those unprotected but networked handheld devices. At the same time, many home computer users who have always relied on high speed Internet access don't realize that without a personal firewall, they too are quite vulnerable to intrusion and attacks. This book is designed to explain how personal firewalls work and how to determine which type of firewall works best in a given situation. Yeo starts with an intro to security basics -basic data protection measures (passwords, virus software, encryption, and firewalls) and reviews common vulnerabilities and issues with the always-on Internet. Yeo then explains protection methods used by firewalls in general - proxy server firewalls, packet filters, signature-based firewalls and stateful inspection-based firewalls while examining strengths and weaknesses of each type. She then explains how each type of protection method is implemented in a `personal` firewall, the various products including Black Ice Defender, Zone Alarm, Linux iptables that use a given firewall method, and the pros and cons of relying on this method in a personal firewall. An entire chapter is devoted to maintenance of personal firewalls.

User review
Learn some effective paranoia
If you are using a local machine and are not currently using a personal firewall, then this is a book you must read. Furthermore, if you believe your security worries are over because you are running a firewall, then you also must read this book.
The role of firewalls in computer security is only one of the topics covered. Other points are the limitations of firewalls, some of the tactics used by hackers to break into systems and how some of the features of firewalls are implemented. These topics are critical to the effective use of a firewall in the securing of a personal system. Like most other instances of complex technology, it is necessary to understand some of the inner workings of firewalls if you are to use them efficiently. Also, this will help you understand the security holes that they do not cover, or may not cover if improperly configured. In many ways, this is the most important information found in the book.
In computer security, a false sense of security is the worst position to be in. To have any valid sense of security, you must also be paranoid, trusting no one and no thing until proven otherwise. After reading this book, you will still be paranoid, even after installing a firewall. However, at least now you will know many of the things that you should be paranoid about.

User review
Perfect for the small office owner wondering about firewalls
What a fascinating idea, a book about personal firewalls. The book tries to do a review TCP, the principles of information security and what firewalls are and by trying to cover too much fails to meet the promise of its title. It doesn't cover personal firewalls in any depth, but it does have an important purpose. There are a number of small business and home office owners that simply do not understand the importance of a firewall or a personal firewall. The language in the book is clear, friendly and approachable. The work is designed to be understood and is a quick read, which is important for a small business owner that will only invest so much time learning about firewalls and security. I learned about a firewall I had never heard of, Kerio, but the book doesn't cover Tiny, one of the most important personal firewalls. For someone in information security already, this is probably two stars, but for someone with a small office wondering what a firewall is and if they need one, I would be very comfortable recommending this book. Lisa Yeo has the potential to be a great writer, she seems to have a knack for covering a topic with just the number of words needed. I would encourage her to try again, personal firewalls is a topic that needs to be covered, but next time do it with a strong technical review team.

The book layout is one of the better jobs I have seen, the font is easy on the eyes and large enough to actually read. They do a fascinating trick where code examples and notes are allowed to extend further into the left margin than the text of the book. This serves to break up the text and draws your attention to the figures, code examples and notes.

Inorganic Chemistry: An Industrial and Environmental Perspective

Inorganic Chemistry: An Industrial and Environmental Perspective
T. W. Swaddle | 1997-03-10 00:00:00 | Academic Press | 482 | Internal Medicine
This book addresses the question, What is inorganic chemistry good for? rather than the more traditional question, How can we develop a theoretical basis for inorganic chemistry from sophisticated theories of bonding? The book prepares students of science or engineering for entry into the multi-billion-dollar inorganic chemical and related industries, and for rational approaches to environmental problems such as pollution abatement, corrosion control, and water treatment. A much expanded and updated revision of the 1990 text, Applied Inorganic Chemistry (University of Calgary Press), Inorganic Chemistry covers topics including atmospheric pollution and its abatement, water conditioning, fertilizers, cement chemistry, extractive metallurgy, metallic corrosion, catalysts, fuel cells and advanced batter technology, pulp and paper production, explosives, supercritical fluids, sol-gel science, materials for electronics, and superconductors. Though the book waswritten as a textbook for undergraduates with a background of freshman chemistry, it will also be a valuable sourcebook for practicing chemists, engineers, environmental scientists, geologists, and educators.

Key Features
* Presents the principles of inorganic chemistry in terms of its relevance to the real world of industry and environmental protection
* Serves as a concise reference for practicing scientists, engineers, and educators
* Emphasizes industrially relevant energetics and kinetics rather than bonding theories
* Features extensive cross-referencing for easy location of supporting material
Reviews
This book is not very recent(I think it was published in '97 or so) but the contents is very complete. I recommend it mainly for chemical engineers who take inorganics course, or to anyone interested in the topics. It views the economic and environmental importance of chemical related industries, and explains in detail structures, processes, bonding, etc. I have not read it all, but so far, so good. Two thumbs up!
Reviews
The price was fair, the book is in really good conditions and I received it within 3 weeks (that's good for this kind of international delivery)

Blueprints Obstetrics and Gynecology (Blueprints Series)

Blueprints Obstetrics and Gynecology (Blueprints Series)
Tamara L. Callahan,Aaron B. Caughey | 2008-12-08 00:00:00 | Lippincott Williams & Wilkins | 368 | Medical Assistants

One of the best selling and highly regarded volumes in the Blueprints series, Blueprints Obstetrics and Gynecology provides students with a concise review of what they need to know in their ob/gyn rotations or the Boards. Each chapter is brief and includes pedagogical features such as bolded key words, tables, figures, and Key Points. A question-and-answer section at the end of the book presents 100 board-format questions with rationales. The newest techniques in contraception and sterilization and hormone replacement therapies are covered, as are contemporary treatment options for uterine fibroids and invasive breast cancer.

A companion Website includes a question bank and fully searchable text.

Reviews
Personally I need books that explain things thoroughly in order for me to understand concepts. That's why I enjoyed Goljian's pathology book over BRS pathology after having used BRS pathology for 2/3 of my pathology course. This Blueprints book lies somewhere between how factual BRS path is and how Goljian's pathology is in terms of level of explanations. It's well written and easy to understand. But, many times it doesn't take the time to explain reasons or concepts behind various pathological findings or testings or why various testing findings are the way they are. That's why I'm not rating it as a 5 star product. Otherwise it's been a pleasure reading this book.
Reviews
This is an excellent source for a beginner learning OB/GYN. It has a good breadth of information from labor and delivery to GYN oncology, and it is well written. It reads like a textbook, but the author does an excellent job keeping important points in without filling the page with extraneous information. I was happy with how simplistic it was to read for a 3rd year med student. It really doesn't require any outside resource to understand, and it has more than enough information to get you through your shelf exam at the end of a clerkship. It does have its downfalls, however. The questions at the end of the book are great, but they don't allow you to practice questions at the end of each chapter. Also, it fails to lack that clinical teaching that helps students recognize the condition when it is presented in a clinical vignette. For these reasons, I recommend using Case Files along with this book, which is an excellent companion.
Reviews
This book is pretty much to the point. If you are looking for more wordy info,...get another book. But it's quick & dirty which is awesome for medical students. It's an easy read for boards!! I like this book so far.
Reviews
This is the first time I've used Blueprints. It is written in textbook format, which I don't like, but it is also terse and only tells you what you need to know. I just outline it and study off my outline.
Reviews
Yes. Awesome. Practically everything you will need to know for your rotation, but definately comprehensive enough to cover your OB/GYN needs outside of OB/GYN and probably 100% of your OB/GYN step material. For sure. Could probably use a little more fetal heart monitor interpretation.

Alzheimer's Activities That Stimulate the Mind

Alzheimer's Activities That Stimulate the Mind
Emilia Bazan-Salazar | 2005-02-10 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill | 256 | Nervous System

Based on its author's four-year study and 15 years of experience in Alzheimer's and dementia-related care, Alzheimer's Activities That Stimulate the Mind is the only book offering exercises appropriate to each of the four stages of the disease. It features hundreds of exercises across an array of areas and disciplines, including arts and crafts, community outings, physical activity, religion and spirituality, grooming, gardening, music, and many more.

Reviews
I sent this book back, it could encourage unproductive activity situations. Although there are some good activities mentioned in this book, most of the activities outlined either simply don't work or are, at worst, counter productive for Alzheimer's persons. The author, who appears to lack knowledge of dementia and activities (she is a nurse not a RT) should become acquainted with Reisberg's 7 Stages of Alzheimer's or Johnson and Johnson's Alzheimer's as a 'trip back in time' article (American J. of Alzheimer's Disease, April, 2000). Just because a person works at a facility which cares for demented persons does not mean she knows what she is talking about. I wonder if this person has a degree in Gerontological Nursing or Gerontology? This author ill-advises readers to use activities that aid in "reality orientation" or "24 hour reality orientation" for a person with dementia. That idea is so dated and counter-productive it is ridiculous. The requirement for 24 hour reality orientation in nursing facilities is currently being either changed or questioned by most gerontologists. For example, the trend is for changes in the 24 hour RO requirement written into the policy and procedures for dedicated dementia wings or for nursing facilies (since they are running over 60 percent dementia),where the Activity Director validates the Alzheimer's person's delusions. Why? Because RO simply doesn't work or delievers a bad message for most demented persons. Unlike depression or delirium, demented persons have lost their abilities to think, remember and reason. So instead person-centered activities are the trend, where the activity accomopanies the AD person on his or her "trip back in time" instead of imposing your reality on the different reality of the AD person. When the Alzheimer's person has time-traveled back to age 20 or 30 and she is told she has grandchildren or an 80 year old husband, the only result of this correction will be either an argument or a message to the AD person that she is dumb! In summary, reality orientation does not work for dementia persons and should be restricted to depressed or mildly confused elders only. RO was originally used for Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome men in Alabama and then became a national requirement for all nursing homes. But nursing homes house mainly demented persons now. So this outdated procedure is counter productive for demented persons. Activities focused on person-centered care are the current trend. Person-centered activities do mostly the opposite of what is suggested in this really bad book. Person-centered activities use validation instead of reality orientation and are matched with the 7 stages/sub-stages of AD persons in sink with the person's "trip back in time."
Reviews
this is the best book I have ever ead that explains alzheimers to the lay person. You know how that person feels when you finsih it and also itis obvious that the writer understand how the caregiver feels. It has enhaced the time i spend with my grandmother more than anythinf I have ever found. I would recommend this book to eveyone, it is an invaluable asset.

Trade, Globalization and Sustainability Impact Assessment: A Critical Look at Methods and Outcomes

Trade, Globalization and Sustainability Impact Assessment: A Critical Look at Methods and Outcomes
Paul Ekins,Tancrede Voituriez | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Earthscan Publications Ltd. | 256 | Economics
Trade liberalization, as promoted by the World Trade Organization (WTO) has become one of the dominant drivers and most controversial aspects of globalization. Trade sustainability impact assessments (SIAs) were introduced as a means of generating better understanding of the social and environmental impacts of trade liberalization and of making those impacts more consistent with sustainable development.

This book takes a hard look at the practice of Trade SIAs to date, and the extent to which they have achieved their objectives and improved the outcomes of trade negotiations. It proposes several ways in which Trade SIAs could be made more effective, and illustrates these in respect of controversial sectors in which trade liberalization has been implemented or proposed, including textiles, services and investment. Finally the book makes proposals beyond SIA through which some of the conflicts between trade liberalization and sustainable development could be more effectively addressed.

Written by top researchers and experts on trade SIAs, this book is vital for researchers, academics, post-graduate students and policy makers working on any aspect of impact assessment, international trade or globalization more generally. In addition, the book will provide a particularly useful background for those considering how the environment and trade interrelate at regional level, with some particular insights on climate change and trade policies.

Effective XML: 50 Specific Ways To Improve Your XML

Effective XML: 50 Specific Ways To Improve Your XML
| 2003-09-22 00:00:00 | | 336 | XML

Learning the fundamentals of XML might take a programmer a week. Learning how to use XML effectively might take a lifetime. While many books have been written that teach developers how to use the basic syntax of XML, this is the first one that really focuses on how to use XML well. This book is not a tutorial. It is not going to teach you what a tag is or how to write a DTD (Document Type Definition). Instead it's going to tell you when, why, where, and how to use such tools effectively (and equally important when not to use them).Since XML has become a fundamental underpinning of new software systems, it becomes important to ask new questions, not just what XML is, but how does one use it effectively? Which techniques work and which don't? Perhaps most importantly, which techniques appear to work at first but fail to scale as systems are further developed? This book answers these questions. It is not enough to write programs that compile and produce the expected results. It is important to write code that is extensible, legible, and maintainable. XML can be used to produce robust, extensible, maintainable systems.

User review
Pass On This One
I've been using XML for about six years and found this book to repeat the common already understood best practices. I was expecting this book to bring new ideas to light but instead it focused on common design practices already understood within the XML community (i.e. do I make a piece of data an element or a attribute?). To the authors credit he does give very thorough explainations and he knows XML well. I guess more than anything this book didn't match my expectations, however it is a well written and would work for folks new to the XML community.

User review
Excellent resource for both quality control and ideas
I bought this book quite a while ago and I absolutely the format. It's a great resource to just pick up and get great ideas, verify that you are on/off the right track and generally learn how to get to the next level with XML. Highly recommended

User review
How to Effectively Use XML
Elliotte Rusty Harold states in the introduction of Effective XML that the book is neither an introductory book nor an XML tutorial. Rather, it is a distillation of the author's experience using and teaching XML and how to use it effectively. The book does a great job of explaining how to use XML and its related technologies.

The book is divided into four major sections: Syntax, Structure, Semantics, and Implementation. Each of the fifty Items packs a lot of information into a few pages. The Items span topics such as why you should Include an XML Declaration (Item 1), Make Structure Explicit through Markup (Item 11), Program to Standard APIs (Item 31), and Write in Unicode (Item 38). Even the Introduction is valuable because it sets the definitions for XML-related terms used in the rest of the book that the author has found to be used interchangeably or inconsistently.

Item 24, Choose the Right Schema Language for the Job, provides a typical example of the great information contained in Effective XML. This Item discusses the strengths and weaknesses of four schema languages: W3C XML Schema Language, DTDs, RELAX NG, and Schematron. The use of programming languages to handle situations that the schema languages can't handle is also discussed. The Item ends with a set of questions to think about when selecting the schema language to use.

I found the book very readable and like that the information is presented in digestible chunks. Effective XML isn't meant to hype XML but to identify what the actual capabilities of XML and its related technologies are and how best to use them. The book does an outstanding job at this task.

Full disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the book for review.

User review
I wish the XML Schema working group had a copy per member
This is not a book explaining XML. This is not a book that goes into any depth on XML APIs. It is not a book explaining any one XML format like XSLT, RSS, or XSD.

Instead it is a book on how to work with XML. How to design an XML application to take full advantage of the facilties of XML: schemas, processing instructions, XSL transforms, namespaces. It is all structured to slowly introduce you into the complexities, and deserves to sit up on the bookshelf with Effective C++, Java and Enterprise Java.

If you already know the basics of XML, it is actually quite a good way to learn about some of the more esoteric concepts -from the pragmatic perspective. Too many XML books rant about how wonderful some feature like XML schema's extension stuff is, why XML is the most universal format ever, SOAP and WS-* the best protocol for distributed systems ever, and XQuery everything you need for an XML database.

This book bursts the bubble of hype with rational analysis of what makes sense, and what doesn't. Item 28: Use only what you need, is my favourite: A review of the main XML specs and analysis of what really matters, which comes down to #35, navigate with XPath.

If you are designing an XML schema/system/application, you need this book. If you have to put up with architects telling you about WS-MetadataExchange, WS-Transfer and RDF, you need a copy to roll up and hit them over the head. And, if like me, you are involved in standards bodies that produce XML related things, you need to buy a copy for all the other participants, so that what you produce will actually work.

Remember that XML is a language designed for use by people and machines. The machines have the upper hand. But with this book, and some thinking, you can design XML applications that people can use.

User review
Great gap between book knowledge and effective use,,.
The flexibility of XML can often mean that there's a gap between using XML and using XML effectively. Elliotte Rusty Harold's book Effective XML - 50 Specific Ways to Improve Your XML (Addison Wesley) is an excellent way to move towards the latter condition.

Chapter List: Syntax; Structure; Semantics; Implementation; Recommended Reading; Index

There are obviously a large number of books that will teach you the semantics of writing and using XML. But just because you can create an XML file doesn't mean that you've done it well or effectively. Harold's book provides a bridge to being able to create XML files that will be usable in nearly all situations. The book starts out in the introduction with explanations of terms that are often confused (element vs. tag, text vs. character data vs. markup, etc.). Then there are four parts of the book that include a total of 50 tips that will improve the quality of your XML usage. Some tips are pretty basic, like `Include an XML Declaration`. Others are more complex like `Verify Documents with XML Digital Signatures`. But every one is practical and useful for making sure that your XML is widely useable by all potential applications.

Excellent bridge book to read after you've learned the basics of XML. This is a book that, when taken to heart and used, will cause your coworkers to thank you.

Every Dog's Legal Guide is a newly revised, up-to-date practical guide to the legal issues that affect dogs, their owners and their neighbors every day, including:

*dog owners liability for injuries

*dogs that bite or create a nuisance

*animal cruelty

*landlords, tenants and dogs

*guide, signal, service and therapy dogs

The latest edition of Every Dog's Legal Guide is completely updated with the latest laws of your state that affect your canine.
Dog Law offers a comprehensive look at the legal ramifications of dog ownership and functions as a guide to dispute resolution for problematic dog behavior. Well organized by topic, there are answers to just about any question one might have, from dog biting to landlord relationships, from leash laws to dog burials. Dog owners who read this book will save time, money, legal hassles, and possibly even a beloved dog's life.
Reviews
This is a fantastic book that every dog owner should read!! It tells you how to protect yourself and your dog for legal issues, as well as how to find the specific answers in your local city/town/state.
Reviews
I recently took a course on Dog Law and Ethics and I found this book very

useful. It was very informative in itself plus it had great references.

It is written in a very user friendly manner that makes it easy to read.

I think anyone that has a dog or dog business could benefit from reading

this information and having this book on hand as a resource. The edition

I used was the sixth edition which leads me to believe that the author

keeps updated on the material and reprints the book as needed.
Reviews
Dog law is another outstanding legal book by Nolo press. I got the book because I was having problems with my neighbor's five barking dogs. I wanted to be informed of my rights before I confronted my neighbor. Although I had no luck coming to a compromise with my neighbor regarding the dogs (he is a crazy, paranoid, drug-addicted redneck), it was empowering to know my rights. The only small complaint was that it did not include state laws, but that may be beyond the scope of this book.
Reviews
If you are thinking about buying a dog (it explains puppy mills, contracts to consider when you buy a dog and licensing laws); you already have a dog (laws you might want to consider even if you're sure your dog is always well-behaved and how to get dog insurance); you want to provide for your dog after your death (what may or may not work in your will); you hate your neighbor's dog's barking (how to talk to your neighbor or seek mediation, or your liability if you are cruel or provoke the dog) or if you suspect your neighbor's dog is mistreated or are in any other way concerned about dogs: YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK. There is much more covered than what I have put here.

I expected to read a few key chapters, but ended up reading it cover to cover. It contains interesting facts throughout (have you ever thought about the number of dogs injured/killed by riding in the back of a pick-up truck?), history of dog laws, real cases and the rulings in those cases (though obviously missing the recent case of Ms. Whipple's murder); and sound, common-sense advice whether it is written in the law or not.

For the sake of the dogs and the people who own or are around them, I hope everybody will read this book.
Reviews
Now in a revised and updated 4th edition, Dog Law is a straightforward and comprehensive legal guide for dog owners -- and the neighbors of dog owners. Dog Law explains, in plan English terms easily accessible to the lay person, what the laws mandates with regard to barking dogs, dangerous dogs, cruelty to animals, dog bites, if a dog is injured or killed, and much more. Dog Law is a superbly presented, user friendly reference, and a "must" for dog owners, as well as for anyone else who might have a legal bone to pick!

The World Bank: A Critical Primer

The World Bank: A Critical Primer
Eric Toussaint | 2007-12-20 00:00:00 | Pluto Press | 336 | Economics
The World Bank is a controversial organisation. It is widely viewed with suspicion, as the international economic arm of the US, in thrall to the President who is responsible for appointing the head of the Bank. Eric Toussaint gives a highly readable account of just why the World Bank has become so powerful. In short, clear chapters he shows how the bank operates, who funds it, and what it sets out to promote. The Bank's main purpose is to grant loans to all the newly independent states of the developing world, to help them on their journey to recovery after colonial occupation. In reality, the conditions imposed on these states -- including enforced privatisation of all public services, and enforced neo-liberal rules on trade -- mean that the Bank has become the new colonial authority in everything but name. This is a perfect book for anyone looking for a critical introduction to the history of the Bank and its role in world affairs.

Offshore Money Book, The : How to Move Assets Offshore for Privacy, Protection, and Tax Advantage

Offshore Money Book, The : How to Move Assets Offshore for Privacy, Protection, and Tax Advantage
Arnold Cornez | 2000-04-01 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill | 288 | Economics
Here is a timely, comprehensive, and invaluable guide to using offshore investing as a method of asset protection. From evaluating places in which to invest to avoiding offshore scams, this easy-to-understand book provides you with all there is to know about keeping the money you earn.
Reviews
This book covers most of your questions and describes the basics for banking and corporations established outside the US. It tries to give you the pros and cons of each type of company and a list of places to look into. While it may not be the only book you'll ever need, it does a nice job of detailing what you'll need and how to go about the process of offshore management of finances and protecting your assets. It would have gotten 5 stars if it had been more recent. Still, its' quite worthwhile compared to what else is out there.
Reviews
This book lets you understand the fundamentals of offshore investing to protect yourself from lawsuits and avoid unnecessary tax liability. It focuses on the legal way to avoid exposure. This book is worth the money, but nothing outstanding.
Reviews
Famous authors of several other books like this one, for example Jerome Schneider, have already been * convicted * of tax fraud and have handed over their entire client lists to the US Government.

There is no legal way of avoiding US Taxes through offshore banks, offshore trusts, or numbered accounts. These things are only good for:

1.) Asset protection

2.) Diversifying investments/access to greater variety of investments

and that's it. Be wary of advice in books like this one if you are using them to avoid taxes.

If you don't like paying high taxes, give up your residency, hand in your passport and get citizenship in a country with lower taxes.
Reviews
If you are looking for a "feel good" book that only gives you the sugar frosting about offshore without warning you about the many pitfalls, then this book isn't for you.

On the one hand, if your interest is learning about the realities of offshore banking and tax reporting for U.S. citizens, etc., the you will find this a good starter guide. It's also chock full of interesting stories based on Mr. Cornez's personal experiences in the offshore havens.
Reviews
This is a good book for teaching newbies the basics of how to go offshore, open bank accounts, and (perhaps most importantly) avoid offshore scams.

The book needs to be read in light of recent revisions to the Patriot Act and new currency transfer reporting requirements. Don't even think of going offshore if your goal is to try to hide money from Uncle Sam, since if your particular plan fails it will probably end up being felony tax evasion.

Acrylamide and other hazardous compounds in heat-treated foods

Acrylamide and other hazardous compounds in heat-treated foods
Kerstin Skog,Jan Alexander | 2006-11-15 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 513 | Food Science
It is now known that heating carbohydrate-rich foods can cause the formation of acrylamide and further research is likely to show that other hazardous compounds are formed during the heat treatment of foods. Therefore assessing the risks posed to consumers by acrylamide and other potentially carcinogenic and genotoxic compounds such as heterocyclic amines and PhIP is a priority for the food industry. This new book presents the latest research in the area, discussing the mechanisms of formation of hazardous compounds during heat treatment, the analysis of hazardous compounds, methods to assess the risks they pose and novel methods to minimize their formation in food products.

The U.S. Congress: A Very Short Introduction

The U.S. Congress: A Very Short Introduction
Donald A. Ritchie | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 168 | History
Many scholars believe that the framers of the Constitution intended Congress to be the preeminent branch of government. Indeed, no other legislature in the world approaches its power. Yet most Americans have only a murky idea of how it works.
In The U.S. Congress, Donald A. Ritchie, a congressional historian for more than thirty years, takes readers on a fascinating, behind-the-scenes tour of Capitol Hill--pointing out the key players, explaining their behavior, and translating parliamentary language into plain English. No mere civics lesson, this eye-opening book provides an insider's perspective on Congress, matched with a professional historian's analytical insight. After a swift survey of the creation of Congress by the constitutional convention, he begins to unscrew the nuts and pull out the bolts. What is it like to campaign for congress? To attract large donors? To enter either house with no seniority? He answers these questions and more, explaining committee assignments (and committee work), the role of staffers and lobbyists, floor proceedings, parliamentary rules, and coalition building. Ritchie explores the great effort put into constituent service--as representatives and senators respond to requests from groups and individuals--as well as media relations and news coverage. He also explores how the grand concepts we all know from civics class--checks and balances, advise and consent, congressional oversight--work in practice, in an age of strong presidents and a muscular Senate minority (no matter which party is in that position).
In this sparkling addition to Oxford's Very Short Introduction series, Donald Ritchie moves beyond the cynicism and the platitudes to provide a gem of a portrait of how Congress really works.

Principles and Methods of Law and Economics: Enhancing Normative Analysis

Principles and Methods of Law and Economics: Enhancing Normative Analysis
Nicholas L. Georgakopoulos | 2005-10-10 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 392 | Economics
This introductory book targets the reader who has the ambition to apply economic analysis but may be missing a technical introduction to its mathematical techniques or seeks a structured elaboration of its philosophical principles. The text juxtaposes economic analysis with moral philosophy, political theory, egalitarianism, and other methodological principles and then progresses to the details of methods such as model-building, derivatives, differential equations, statistical tests, and the use of computer programs.
Reviews
Georgakopoulos's «Principles and Methods of Law and Economics» is very readable introduction to the given subject. Starting with normative reasoning, social welfare and Coase theorem, Georgakopoulos provides an introduction to the mathematical techniques of economic analysis (it is necessary to remember that mathematical modeling is the leading tool of law and economics). But it should not frighten lawyers. The mathematical toolkit is described clearly enough for not well-informed readers. Guides to related reading provided in each chapter encourage further reading and study.

I recommend this book to present and future lawyers (students and working lawyers), which have only base knowledge of economics and its methods. Really, it is a useful reading for beginners. Nicholas Georgakopoulos has thought incisively about how to introduce law and economics to this category of readers. However, familiarity with leading classical authors of law and economics (Gary S. Becker, Richard A. Posner, Ronald Coase, Steven Shavell) is likely a prerequisite to deep understanding and appreciating this text. If you are interested in law and economics, then this book should be on your list.

Reviews
Outstanding work by a prominent commentator in the law and economics. Georgakopoulos is one of the real leaders in this area, and I've used his work in a number of my own studies and research. I strongly recommend this book for any students of government, law, economics (especially social or welfare economics), and related areas. This puts a whole new spin on the discipline.

Writing Solid Code (Microsoft Programming Series)

Writing Solid Code (Microsoft Programming Series)
Steve Maguire | 1993-01-01 00:00:00 | Microsoft Press | 256 | Microsoft
"This book has useful things to say and an engaging way of saying them...a worthwhile addition to the shelves of any full-time programmer." - PC Week. Here, from a former Microsoft developer, are super secrets for developing bug-free C programs. Maguire provides examples of how bugs are caught at Microsoft (using actual case histories) and shows how readers can use these proven programming techniques to get products to market faster.
Any programmer worth their silicon knows that it is wiser to invest time preventing bugs from hatching than to try to exterminate them afterwards. And this is one of the best books for developing a proactive attitude towards electronic entomology. Follow Maguire's advice, and your testers, supervisors and customers will love you. Recommended.
Reviews
A classic that is dated in some respects (C language?) but still has much to offer. Should have a spot on every developer's and project manager's book shelf.

Deserves an update.
Reviews
"Writing Solid Code" contains a creative list of excellent ways to improve your software coding ability, with an emphasis on techniques that simplify and speed up the debugging process. The book is written toward the C language, but most of the advice can be generally applied to any language. I have both a Bachleors and a Masters Degree in Computer Science, and very few of these valuable techniques were mentioned anywhere in my undergraduate or graduate degree courses.

I strongly disagree with boastful reviewers who poo-poo the advice as "obvious." Most good advice is obvious once you have heard it. I highly doubt that these reviewers knew all or even most of these tricks before reading, or could enunciate supporting reasons for doing each. Likewise, sure, a rare few pieces of advice are outdated, and you probably hate Microsoft. So what? Avoiding this book for those reasons is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater -- short sighted.

This is an excellent book. I highly recommend it.
Reviews
Certainly no book can cover all the best practices to write best code but this book has done good attempt. Must read for all the fresh grads and developers before they start writing production code!
Reviews
This book quickly reminded me that the "old school" rules to software development will always apply, no matter how many new labels you put on it (e.g. Agile). It was recommended to me by a college professor aside from the regular classroom reading we had to complete. And I was more than happy I purchased it and added it to my bookshelf.
Reviews
This book has been recently recommended to me by Amazon based on my previous purchase habits and I decided to go take a look at its description. At first, I was little bit skeptic about the value of a book published in 1993 and prepared with Word for Windows 2.0 because software programming has changed a lot since then! However, it was a very low risk purchase because of its very low price tag so I decided to give it a try and I have been pleasantly surprised!

This book is the proof that that there are few things in programming that are timeless. Errors of the past still occur today. The programming language used for the examples is C but what is taught is also applicable to C++ programming as well. Topics discussed in the book are: assertions, integrity checks, stepping through code with a debugger, how to not design interfaces that are error prone, avoid language features that are error prone and finally the author conclude his book by describing the attitude that a programmer should have. Among other things, a programmer should prioritize safe code before micro-optimizations. All these concepts are written in a style easy to understand filled with anecdotes that make this book a pleasant read.

To conclude, I have not been blown away by the content of this book but I have learn one thing or two and I am glad that I have read it especially with its very low price tag.

Missing Pieces: My Life As a Child Survivor of the Holocaust (Legacies Shared)

Missing Pieces: My Life As a Child Survivor of the Holocaust (Legacies Shared)
Olga Verrall | 2007-07-30 00:00:00 | University of Calgary Press | 244 | Jewish
Until the age of seven, Olga Barsony lived an idyllic life in Szarvas, a small town in Hungary, surrounded by her doting, observant Jewish family. In spring 1944, Olga and most of her family were interned in the Auspitz labour camp shortly after the Nazi occupation of Hungary. Eventually reunited after the war, the family moved back to Szarvas, only to face harsh repression at the hands of the Communists a few short years later. In 1957, the Barsonys immigrated to Winnipeg, where Olga met and married her husband Orland Verrall, the cantor at the local synagogue. Olga and Orland's love for each other, the birth of their two daughters, and the promise of a peaceful, contented life together helped to build the foundation of a new start in Canada - a seemingly happy ending to an otherwise traumatic number of years.Sadly for Olga Verral, she would have to endure many more tribulations as she undertook the painful process of re-living the horror of the Holocaust as a child, while at the same time wrestling with the ghosts that had been haunting her life ever since. Anger, sadness, and a deep sense of emptiness would be a recurring theme and source of frustration as Olga undertook rebuilding her life in the aftermath of such intensely excruciating events. After the death of her husband and subsequent emotional breakdown, doctors encouraged her to write her memoirs as a form of therapy. In this way Olga Verral takes her first steps on the long journey towards recovery and tries finally to write a genuinely triumphant ending to her life story. "Missing Pieces" makes a significant contribution to the growing genre of writing by child survivors of the Holocaust, and is the first Holocaust memoir to expose the little-known Auspitz labour camp.

Einstein Manifolds (Classics in Mathematics)

Einstein Manifolds (Classics in Mathematics)
Arthur L. Besse | 2007-12-18 00:00:00 | Springer | 516 | Mathematics

Einstein's equations stem from General Relativity. In the context of Riemannian manifolds, an independent mathematical theory has developed around them. Recently, it has produced several striking results, which have been of great interest also to physicists. This Ergebnisse volume is the first book which presents an up-to-date overview of the state of the art in this field. "Einstein Manifold"s is a successful attempt to organize the abundant literature, with emphasis on examples. Parts of it can be used separately as introduction to modern Riemannian geometry through topics like homogeneous spaces, submersions, or Riemannian functionals.

You're NOT Lifting Your Head

You're NOT Lifting Your Head
Charlie King | 2000-05-29 00:00:00 | UnCommon Golf, Inc. | 188 | Golf
This book, which is sure to become a golf instruction classic, takes a "novel" approach to teaching golf's key concepts. From the opening line of the book "I hate this game", you will relate to the lead character J.B. Hawkins and his plight. There are 5 or 6 key points that will change your mind about golf and put you on a path to enjoying this great game for a lifetime. PGA Teaching Professional/ Author Charlie King has written the first book in a series that exposes the "real" problem in golf and gives the solution. You, your family and friends will benefit greatly from the wisdom of You're NOT Lifting Head.
Reviews
In this simply written tale of the golf woes of J.B., Charlie King gives us a largely self-taught golfer whose handicap has remained the same for more than ten years. Although his frustration has recently increased, he has been reluctant to take lessons from a pro, having previously had a bad experience with one who tried to change too many things too fast and "ruined his game." Now, ready to give up the game completely, he finally finds the perfect teacher--and the reader is able to go along and share his lessons and, presumably, apply some of the same helpful principles to his or her own game.

If you have ever had someone tell you that "you lifted your head" when you've stubbed the ball and/or left all your weight on your back foot and failed to follow through, this is the book for you. Harry Wilkinson, the pro in this book, says he has videotaped hundreds of golfers, and not one of them has actually lifted his head at the time the club face contacts the ball. It is other parts of the swing (sometimes a "reverse pivot," for example) that need to be corrected--and when they are, you'll never have to think about your head again.

With relatively simple explanations and a few (unfortunately, too few!) drawings to illustrate the basic principles of driving, pitching, chipping, and putting, King aims to correct the many misconceptions about how the golf swing works, reducing it to its most basic elements and explaining why mistakes occur and how to correct them. He addresses the everyday concerns of the weekend golfer and provides the important learning tools which can make a good golf swing more accessible and help lessons to "take." Whether you are a 35-handicap beginner reading about the golf swing for the first time or a 3-handicap expert who just needs a tune-up, you'll find much to enjoy--and apply--in this short book. Mary Whipple
Reviews
Golf expert Charlie King draws upon his years of experience and uses the unique approach of a fictional account of one golfer's journey to refute several golf instruction myths and promote the importance of each golfer finding his or her coach. As with learning any other athletic or creative skills, the first step is to find a teacher or mentor that is right for you -- and no where is this truer than in learning how to play the game of golf. You're Not Lifting Your Head is a lively, fun, informative, and highly recommended book for any golfer who has ever been told to "keep your head down", who chronically slices the ball, mis-hits the ball without knowing why, or is thinking of quitting the game in frustration.

Thelma & Louise Live!: The Cultural Afterlife of an American Film

Thelma & Louise Live!: The Cultural Afterlife of an American Film
Bernie Cook | 2007-10-15 00:00:00 | University of Texas Press | 240 | Movies
When they floored their Thunderbird off a cliff rather than surrender to the law, Thelma and Louise became icons of female rebellion, provoking strong reactions from viewers who felt either empowered or outraged by the duo's transgressions of women's traditional roles. The 1991 film quickly became--and continues to be--a potent cultural reference point, even inspiring a bumper sticker that declares, "Thelma & Louise Live!" In this insightful study of Thelma & Louise, six noted film scholars investigate the initial reception and ongoing impact of this landmark film. The writers consider Thelma & Louise from a variety of perspectives, turning attention to the film's promotion and audience response over time; to theories of comedy and the role of laughter in the film; to the film's soundtrack and score; to the performances of stars Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis; to the emergence of Brad Pitt as a star and male sex object; and to the film's place in the history of road and crime film genres. Complementing the scholarly analysis is an in-depth interview of screenwriter Callie Khouri by editor Bernie Cook, as well as reviews of Thelma & Louise that appeared in U.S. News & World Report and Time. Offering myriad new ways of understanding the complex interrelations of gender, identity, and violence, Thelma & Louise Live! attests to the ongoing life and still-evolving meanings of this now-classic film.

Same Sex, Different Cultures: Exploring Gay And Lesbian Lives

Same Sex, Different Cultures: Exploring Gay And Lesbian Lives
Gilbert H Herdt | 1998-04-24 00:00:00 | Westview Press | 224 | History
In a definitive account of gay and lesbian practices across ancient and contemporary cultures, within tribal, developing, and modern societies, author Gilbert Herdt reveals a diversity of sexuality and sexual practices that erases the lines between gay and straight love. Herdt shows that what we view as specifically gay and lesbian practice is treated as a natural expression of human nature in many other cultures.
In this wide-ranging and readable book, Gilbert Herdt suggests that field anthropologists have gathered so little information about homoeroticism in non-Western cultures because they are asking the wrong questions--sometimes out of indifference or embarrassment, but often on the shortsighted assumption that same-sex relations will take the same forms that they do in the Western world. Drawing on research into sexual initiation rites and "sexual lifeways" from Africa to the American Southwest, Herdt convincingly demonstrates that many cultures "simply lack categories or general concepts that cover the meanings of the contemporary notion of the homosexual." The Sambia people of New Guinea, for instance, whom Herdt studied for several years, consider a lengthy period of male sexual interaction to be a vital (in fact, mandatory) initiation into manhood, but have no words for a life devoted to a same-sex partner. Although Herdt had explained his own life choices to them many times, his Sambian friends persisted in trying to arrange marriages for him, "feeling sorry" that he had no wife or children. Rich in anecdotes, Herdt's book provides fuel for ongoing dinner party disputes over the nature/nurture question and changing cultural constructions of homosexuality. --Regina Marler
Reviews
Gilbert Herdt is an anthropologist who has studied sexual lifeways in a number of cultures. In this book he explores how homosexual lifeways in different cultures are constructed. Outside of western civilization the idea of a homosexual orientation does not appear in the consciousness of these cultures. Yet there are activities that look to the western mindas being blatantly homosexual. The difference as Herdt tries to point out is that they constitute an integral part of a society. These lifeways are present for a time or during part of a male's life and have a specific social purpose.

Briefly he reviews how the western world develop a sense of an orientation and how western societies have reacted to it. Herdt concludes that one ought not to adapt the constructs of another world, nor should one impose western ideaas in another part of the world. He claims one should acknowledge them with a sense of wonder.

Herdt wants to open debate about homosexual orientation and its place in western society. He observes that a recent study disputes that 10% of men are gay. That study shows it is closer to 2.6%. He shows that surveys that focus on the 12 largest cities in the United States show a much larger percentage of men preferring other men as sexual partners. He points this out because he has been maintaining throughout the book that answers are not simplistic. And that differences need to be explored.

While one might wish for a more comprehensive study of the ideas presented in this volume, Heerdt does indeed open the debate.
Reviews
Although this is a very interesting and readable book, I prefer to read a more comprehensive researched volume.
We can hardly find the new knowledge in the book. In addition, ther are several mistakes or misunderstandings ; e.g. in p.72-73 the author wrote "flower boys of Silla is notable from the Yin dynasty Korea".
If you like to read one more book about "same sex" relationship, you may choose the item, as you like it.

John Calvin's Ideas

John Calvin's Ideas
Paul Helm | 2006-11-23 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 448 | Calvinist
This is a major study of the theological thought of John Calvin, which examines his central theological ideas through a philosophical lens, looking at issues in Metaphysics, Epistemology, and Ethics. The study, the first of its kind, is concerned with how Calvin actually uses philosophical ideas in his work as a theologian and biblical commentator. The book also includes a careful examination of those ideas of Calvin to which the Reformed Epistemologists appeal, to find grounds and precedent for their development of `Reformed Epistemology', notably the sensus divinitatis and the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit.
Reviews
Paul Helm has offered a one-of-a-kind work of scholarship in this book. It is one of the *very* few books that provides an in-depth treatment of John Calvin's ideas in light of contemporary analytic philosophy and philosophical theology. It is an undertaking on par with Eleanore Stump's treatment of St. Thomas in her book "Aquinas".

Calvin is mostly known for his views on predestination, but Helm does him a service by bringing to light Calvin's views on a variety of other topics (for those who are concerned, there is still a chapter on free will). And while Calvin did not often address the writings of other philosophers head-on, Helm points out many instances where Calvin has been influenced by philosophers and theologians, both ancient and contemporary to Calvin.

Helm also gives a critical analysis of contemporary scholarship that relates to Calvin, primarily in what has come to be known as "Reformed Epistemology" headed up by Alvin Plantinga and Nicholas Wolterstorff. His treatment of such topics is spread throughout the book, being addressed in light of the current topic being discussed. For example, in the discussion of epistemology, Helm argues that Calvin should be understood as a sort of evidentialist as opposed to what Reformed epistemologists have attributed to him. Likewise, he offers a compatibilist reading of Calvin on free will, in contrast with the sometimes 'hard determinist' interpretation when it comes to the contemporary debate over free will.

This book is a goldmine for students of philosophy, theology, and John Calvin. The price is a little hefty, but it can be justified considering there is really nothing else out there that even comes close to dealing with these topics the way Helm does.
