Zakk Wylde - Special Guitar Lecture Pentatonic Speedballer

Zakk Wylde - Special Guitar Lecture Pentatonic Speedballer
Zakk Wylde | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Black Label Society | 11 | Video (tutorials, how-to, etc.)
Speaking of Zakk Wylde, you know, "Hey, kids, this is Zakk Wylde of Hootie and the Blowfish fame, Ozzie Osbourne, Blue Cheer, Black Label Society [pauses] and a Lawrence Welk man" [I loved that line in the GW "Guitar Heroes" DVD], anyway, back to the 2006 issued Euro-invasion "Doom Troopin" DVD [double disk] and Zakk and the band are doing "Genocide Junkies" -- now Just as Zakk is known to hurl 'whatever' into the audience, he's also known to pull members of the audience up on the stage. In this case, a guy is plucked from the audience [the guy is wearing a black T-shirt but I can't quite make out what it says although it's not the BLS logo or BLS 'colors' thing], so Zakk hands the guy his guitar and the guy begins jamming with the band! For anyone in the know -- was this someone known to Zakk or just an audience member who simply began jamming with the band and did rather well to boot! As for Zakk himself, what can I say, I like the guy's humor when the expectation is that he'll be on the more serious side as when asked in that last GW video to make with the guitar lesson and Zakk botches [but not on purpose] the A minor pentatonic scale demonstration but, as could have been predicted, simply keeps going, smiles, finishes up and declares, "Yes, my name is Mookey Fish" [pauses] "Kids, practice it enough and 'you' can get it as clean as that ... I've done it like that for many years, decades actually ... that is pure clarity." I loved it! That segment, BTW, is presently making the rounds on Youtube-com and approaching 7 thousand hits! Hey! I'm always in favor of a sense of humor versus those who seem to be perpetually standing under a cloud and/or forever sucking on lemons!

Single-Camera Video Production, Fourth Edition (Media Manuals)

Single-Camera Video Production, Fourth Edition (Media Manuals)
Robert B. Musburger PhD | 2005-03-16 00:00:00 | Focal Press | 232 | How-to
Single-camera Video Production, Fourth Edition clearly explains the technology and the equipment of video production and details step-by-step the professional-level techniques that can be applied to any type of production or budget. In addition, this manual will train you to integrate technique, equipment, and creative concerns within the production process-from preproduction planning through final editing.

This new edition contains more in-depth information about the transition from analog to digital video production and includes the latest information on digital video and HD. It includes expanded coverage of nonlinear editing techniques and features a new organization that follows the actual shooting process more closely.

Single-camera Video Production, Fourth Edition is a comprehensive yet succinct guide to single-camera video production. Written as part of the Focal Press Media Manual series, each page of this helpful guide covers a specific issue in video production and is accompanied by at least one illustration or diagram to further develop the your understanding of the topic.

* Learn about the latest changes to video production technology and the industry
* Find new information about digital production techniques and HD video production
* Acquire the basic knowledge needed to plan, shoot, and edit most field and in-studio video productions
Reviews
Musberger is a great book if you're serious about the craft of shooting. The book is written by a pro for pros and those who would like to be. The style is spare, precise, and clear. There is little flair in the book, but if you want to get better at shooting the information is here and well-explained. While the title is "single-camera", most of the information applies in almost any video shooting situation.
Reviews
The fact that a book has reached its fourth edition usually means it has some merit that readers have found useful. If that's the case with this book, it's a mystery to me how the book ever got out of the first edition.

First of all, the title "Single-Camera Video Production" led me to believe that the book's focus is on how to do everything for a video production using a single camera. For the bulk of the book, that's not what it's about. It's really a general book about using a video camera. (One section even illustrates using 5 cameras--rehearsing and preparing talent!)

Second, the illustrations are terrible. They look like they were done by a non-designer using Etch-a-sketch. Further, the drawings of the complex video cameras were so generic and seemingly dated that they were totally useless. However, that didn't matter because I didn't buy the book to learn about video cameras (that keep changing regularly), but rather some wisdom on the production process where the videographer is trying to produce using a single camera.

The reason that this book is rated two-stars instead of 1 (or 0) is because there were some materials on lighting with a single camera that were useful. (However, there was nothing unique and that I couldn't find on the Web for free.)

All in all, this book is a poorly crafted one, and one that I could cobble together with a topic search on the Web. Unfortunately, I think that a good book on Single-Camera Video Production is something that would be very useful. This just isn't it.
Reviews
Mr. Musburger tackles a very wide range of information in a comfortable and easy to read style. He peppers his text with interesting tidbits about TV production and technology and covers a lot of ground.

There are some unfortunate factual errors in this edition (I have not read earlier editions). Focal Press should improve their editing process and attempt to have more industry experts read books like this before going to press.

All in all this is a good overview for someone starting out in video production as long as they continue to seek out other information from various sources. Instructors in the field can furnish errata for their students that will greatly increase the value of this book.

Better fact checking would have made this a strong recommendation.
Reviews
Now in a fully updated and expanded third edition, Single-Camera Video Production by Robert B. Musburger (Associate Professor, School of Communication, University of Houston), is a straightforward and highly recommended guide based upon the author's many years of practical field experience to planning, shooting, and editing video productions shot on location with essentially one camera at the filmmaker's disposal. An excellent resource for student filmmakers, Single-Camera Video Production offers a wealth of technical detail on audio signals, the scanning system, digital signal standards, camera controls, microphone types, and more, including sound advice on the social side of shooting film such as directing talent.

Photoshop for the Web: Covers Photoshop 5.5 and ImageReady 2.0

Photoshop for the Web: Covers Photoshop 5.5 and ImageReady 2.0
Mikkel Aaland | 1999-11-01 00:00:00 | O'Reilly Media | 244 | How-to
In this second edition, author Mikkel Aaland updatesPhotoshop for the Web to include important new techniques and workarounds for the latest release of Photoshop--version 5.5. The first edition was loaded with step-by-step examples and real-world solutions from some of the world's hottest Web sites. The second edition adds coverage of Photoshop 5.5's newest features, including a compression tool that ultimately leads to faster download times and higher quality Web graphics. This edition also details features new to version 5.0, including the changeable type tool, color profiling, and the history palette. If that's not enough, Photoshop for the Web, 2nd Edition also covers Adobe's ImageReady 2.0 Web graphics production software, and includes 64 pages of color inserts. Photoshop for the Web, 2nd Edition shows you how to use the latest version of Photoshop to create Web graphics that look great and download blazingly fast.
Photoshop for the Web is the second edition of Mikkel Aaland's excellent instructional text on Adobe's powerful image manipulation program. This time, the book focuses on version 5.5, as well as ImageReady 2, which accompanies it. Aaland's 10 years in new media production, combined with the book's added contributions from different Web designers, results in confident and clear guidance on topics ranging from how to configure Photoshop's preferences specifically for the Web to using ImageReady to create quick rollover buttons.

The opening chapters deal with tuning Photoshop appropriately for Web production (for example, optioning out of image previews for JPEG images) and adjusting photos for the Web (including using the new Web Photo Gallery feature). The middle chapters detail working with GIF and JPEG images. The last section of the book helps resolve specific problems like creating tiled and nontiled background images and navigational icons (for example, beveled buttons and bullet balls with light effects). And there is an excellent chapter on using ImageReady to create GIF animations and rollovers. Black-and-white screen shots and illustrations appear on every page, not to mention 160 color illustrations throughout the text. Appendices discuss the PNG file format and complementary third-party software.

This would be an excellent choice for beginners; a lot of the instruction is very basic. But intermediate-level users and anyone just upgrading to version 5.5 will also find that hopping around within the book can be a fast way to get acquainted with the new features of both applications. --Angelynn Grant

Topics covered: Instruction on using Adobe Photoshop 5.5 and ImageReady 2 for Web image production, including adjusting preferences appropriately, preparing photos for viewing on the Web, saving images as GIFs or JPEGs, creating background images, working with type as image, creating navigational icons, GIF animations, rollovers importing vector files into Photoshop, and using Photoshop to design Web pages.

I noticed that this book was on the Bargain book page. Obviously with the release and already widespread acceptance of Photoshop 7, buying this book which focusses on version 4 is completely out of date. Now that Photoshop has ImageReady, using Photoshop to develop web graphics is easy and intuitive. If you are new to the graphics world, don't let the bargain price trick you.

Simple and Short!

Buy it! Why?

The techniques showed inside will save you tremendous time developing and will help you design better websites and graphics.

I've been doing websites for 5 years, and I found some really nice tricks inside.

Photoshop for the Web is not 'just another Photoshop book of shortcut commands and tool tips. It IS an invaluable collection of insider techniques that the experts use everyday in their combined art and occupation to exploit the usefulness of this truly amazing program. I love how this software has been so widely adopted and used in ways never imagined in its conception. The question rapidly becomes what can't Photoshop do? Mikkel does a great job of showing you this tool's versatility in an easy to follow text.

First of all, this is not a book for beginners. I had to buy a more basic instruction manual to cover the details that this one takes for granted. But once you get past that, there's some great material here. The attention here is not on the mechanics of graphics creation (hence the need for prior knowledge), but on how to make graphics look good. As such, the author uses extensive examples from his own and others' experience. The 160 full-color glossy illustrations are nice, too. And if you don't like the examples themselves, they do provide plenty of ideas for things you can do on your own. There's also a lot of material on how to use graphics to improve Web sites, which was useful as well. My main problem was that it could have been a bit longer.
Reviews
This book has great real world examples. It has easy to follow examples and case studies from real web preofessionals. I found it easy to follow and very helpful in day to day production. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in producing images for the web.
