Breakthrough: Stories and Strategies of Radical Innovation

Breakthrough: Stories and Strategies of Radical Innovation
Mark Stefik,Barbara Stefik | 2004-10-01 00:00:00 | The MIT Press | 308 | Economics
Since the late 1990s, technology markets have declined dramatically. Responding to the changing business climate, companies use strategies of open innovation: acquiring technologies from outside, marketing their technologies to other companies, and outsourcing manufacturing. But open innovation is not enough; it is mainly a way to run a business to its endgame. By itself, open innovation results in razor-thin profits from products that compete as commodities. Businesses also need a path to renewal. No one ever achieved a breakthrough with open innovation.

Our capacity for creating breakthroughs depends on a combination of science, imagination, and business; the next great waves of innovation will come from organizations that get this combination right. During periods of rapid economic growth, companies and investors focus on the short term and forget where breakthroughs come from. Without appropriate engagement and reinvestment, the innovation ecology breaks down. Today, universities, technology companies, government funding agencies, venture capitalists, and corporate research laboratories need to foster the conditions in which breakthroughs arise.

In Breakthrough, Mark and Barbara Stefik show us how innovation works. Drawing on stories from repeat inventors and managers of technology, they uncover the best practices for inventing the future. This book is for readers who want to know how inventors do their work, how people become inventors, and how businesses can create powerful cultures of innovation.

Crossing the Line: Racial Passing in Twentieth-Century U.S. Literature and Culture (New Americanists)

Crossing the Line: Racial Passing in Twentieth-Century U.S. Literature and Culture (New Americanists)
Gayle Wald | 2000-01-01 00:00:00 | Duke University Press Books | 272 | African American
As W. E. B. DuBois famously prophesied in The Souls of Black Folk, the fiction of the color line has been of urgent concern in defining a certain twentieth-century U.S. racial "order." Yet the very arbitrariness of this line also gives rise to opportunities for racial "passing," a practice through which subjects appropriate the terms of racial discourse. To erode race's authority, Gayle Wald argues, we must understand how race defines and yet fails to represent identity. She thus uses cultural narratives of passing to illuminate both the contradictions of race and the deployment of such contradictions for a variety of needs, interests, and desires.

Wald begins her reading of twentieth-century passing narratives by analyzing works by African American writers James Weldon Johnson, Jessie Fauset, and Nella Larsen, showing how they use the "passing plot" to explore the negotiation of identity, agency, and freedom within the context of their protagonists' restricted choices. She then examines the 1946 autobiography Really the Blues, which details the transformation of Milton Mesirow, middle-class son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, into Mezz Mezzrow, jazz musician and self-described "voluntary Negro." Turning to the 1949 films Pinky and

Lost Boundaries, which imagine African American citizenship within class-specific protocols of race and gender, she interrogates the complicated representation of racial passing in a visual medium. Her investigation of "post-passing" testimonials in postwar African American magazines, which strove to foster black consumerism while constructing "positive" images of black achievement and affluence in the postwar years, focuses on neglected texts within the archives of black popular culture. Finally, after a look at liberal contradictions of John Howard Griffin's 1961 auto-ethnography Black Like Me, Wald concludes with an epilogue that considers the idea of passing in the context of the recent discourse of "color blindness."

Wald's analysis of the moral, political, and theoretical dimensions of racial passing makes Crossing the Line important reading as we approach the twenty-first century. Her engaging and dynamic book will be of particular interest to scholars of American studies, African American studies, cultural studies, and literary criticism.
Reviews
As a student of literature, my interest in this book was mainly an attempt to broaden my horizons in the area of cultural study. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I found the book fascinating; particularly the chapter, "Mezz Mezzrow and the Voluntary Negro Blues." This was one of my favorite areas of the book, simply because it was so thought-provoking. Is "passing" possible? Can someone "become" something that they, biologically, are not? The reader will have to read for him or herself and then decide. Wald poses many interesting questions regarding identity -- what makes us who we are?

The question of "passing" can be applied to so many areas of our culture, and this book offers a starting point for anyone interested in cultural studies. The prose, while academic, is not overly dense or intimidating. The examples Wald utilizes cover run from a classic "Saturday Night Live" skit, traveling a wide range of other cultural phenomena from literature to music -- instances accessible and recognizable to the reader.

All in all, a very useful book, and well-written.

Reviews
This is one of the best books in the series. The word myth means legend. The myths here are not of Christian origin. You can take all the myths you want and you won't get any better than the King James Bible. Everything is explained in the Holy Bible. God created Adam & Eve, who had Cain & Abel. The Christian God created this world Earth in 6 days. Noah's Arc gave rise to all living creatures in the world wide flood. Dragons gaurded their treasure and featured in many myths, though still exist it's not an every day thing. Also covered are the cyclops and witch. Still a worthwhile read and exceptional in the series as a whole. I'd recommend it.

Walking in Scotland

Walking in Scotland
Sandra Bardwell | 2007-03-01 00:00:00 | Lonely Planet | 348 | Scotland
Scotland contains some of Britain's finest wilderness, from rushing rivers to the surging seas. Take to the wilds or follow in the footsteps of legend as you make your way across an exhilirating range of landscapes. There are highlands to hike and islands to explore, with castles, cottages, and friendly pubs. Whether you want to climb Bens or wander through glens, ancient Scotland is a land of adventure for every walker.

66 detailed trail descriptions for walkers of all levels.

Coasts, Climbs, and Canals color section outlining the variety of Scottish walking.

Two-color contour maps for all featured walks.

Essential accomodation and transport information.

Expert advice on equipment, health, and environmentally responsible walking.
Reviews
I found this book remarkably unhelpful. It was often maddeningly difficult to figure out which map went with which walk, and the walks were not described very clearly. Once I got to Scotland, there was a wealth of great walking books available everywhere, including the wonderful Cicerone guides, and the Pathfinder series published by the Ordinance Survey company, maker of the great topo maps in the UK. I ended up leaving my Lonely Planet guide in a cafe (on purpose), and using my newly purchased local guidebooks instead. The Cicerone and Pathfinder books are available on Amazon, and I highly recommend you skip the Lonely Planet and use these other books.
Reviews
"Walking in Scotland" is like many Lonely Planet guides: packed with useful information in a compact form. Scotland is a superb environment for walking, with a surprising amount of beautiful, even wild areas which offer a huge variety of potential hikes, from easy day hikes to multi-day treks.

"Walking in Scotland" starts with an introduction to Scotland itself, with short descriptions of climate, terrain, and history. This guide includes a run-down on the practicalities of travelling to and around Scotland.

The bulk of the guide covers Scotland by region, with short sections for urban walking in Glasgow and Edinbugh, and much longer sections on the Highlands and Northwest Scotland. The longer routes such as the West Highland Way and the more popular areas such as Glen Coe and the Cairngorms are included. The walking sections include descriptions and diagrams of the more interesting routes, along with tips on local history, transportation, and accomodation. The guide is sprinkled with a few well-chosen photographs that provide a sense of scale for the terrain in Scotland.

This guide provides more than sufficient information for a traveler to plan a walking vacation in Scotland. Walkers are advised to follow the advice of the guide and pick up more detailed maps once in Scotland. Ordnance Survey and other brands are readily available in Information Centers and Sporting Goods stores in Scotland. Weather conditions are highly variable in Scotland and the lack of a detailed map may leave the walker literally stranded in the fog in some areas.

The downside of the compact size of this guide is that some of the maps and diagrams are so small as to be a challenge to read in anything but good light.

This guide is highly recommended to those contemplating a walking vacation in Scotland.
Reviews
For independent walkers planning a trip to Scotland, this book is a portable encyclopaedia. It covers a huge range, from easy walks to exposed ridge-walks and mountain ascents, from a short half-day hike to the Southern Upland Way (two weeks).

As you would expect from Lonely Planet, the authors are strong on environmental issues and thorough on practical information. In 408 pages of densely-packed text they cover the whole of Scotland; the secret of easy access is to use their handy 4-page table of walks organised by region. There is a useful index and glossary, and each walk is supported by a small-scale contour map.

It seems churlish to criticise such a worthy volume for offering too much, but do walkers really need so much detailed data? Price and contact information obsolesce very quickly, as LP clearly knows, and such crowded pages are hard to read in poor light or on a train. You need two strong hands to hold the book open, and even so the gutter is so narrow that you lose the ends of lines of text. As a one-stop resource for walking in Scotland, however, this book is superb value.

I recently ordered this book and was very pleased with the content. Enjoyed the initial section of the book, although I probably knew most of it. Still, it is a great general refresher about rubber stamping. I appreciated the clear, concise directions and photos of the various card projects. Recommend this book to beginners and intermediate stampers alike.
Reviews
I am relly into rubber stamping and this book has wonderful ideas for me. It is very detailed and organized. I have enjoyed first reading it and then putting the ideas into practice.
Reviews
The bulk of the projects are cards that encompass a variety of stamping techniques, some of which are quite unique. There are simple and more complicated projects, including "holiday favor cube", "flip-flop box" and "heart folio." Ms, Seaverns does a fantastic job of explaining the procedures for each project. She shows you how to use some of the most common tools in stamping. The pictures are clear and make completing the design easy.

I've read many card-making and rubber stamping books and skipped quite a few but this is a nice addition to my personal collection. I'd recommend this book for both beginners and seasoned stampers.
Reviews
I had the priviledge to meet the author at Stampfest in Orlando this summer when I took her watercolor class using rubber stamps. Kathie is a wonderful teacher so I was excited to buy her book when it was finally published. I can honestly say it has surpassed my expectations!! I have been addicted to card making and rubber stamping for just over 2 years now so I've read many books and magaiznes on papercrafts and this is by far one of the best books I've come across! The book is full of beautiful projects and full of color photographs with step-by-step instructions that a beginner can easily follow but the book also has projects that will appeal to more experienced stampers as well. This is a great book for both learning and will provide inspiration as well. I'm giving it as a gift to my rubber-stamping friends this holiday season. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in rubber stamping!!

Chemical Thermodynamics: Advanced Applications

Chemical Thermodynamics: Advanced Applications
J.Bevan Ott, Juliana Boerio-Goates | 2000-01-01 00:00:00 | Elsevier Science & Technology Books | 442 | Chemistry
Thermodynamics is, in many ways, much like this modern science building. At the base of the science is a strong foundation. This foundation, which consists of the three laws, has withstood the probing and scrutiny of scientists for over a hundred and fifty years. It is still firm and secure and can be relied upon to support the many applications of the science. Relatively straightforward mathematical relationships based upon these laws tie together a myriad of applications in all branches of science and engineering. In this series, we will focus on chemical applications, but even with this limitation, the list is extensive.

Reviews
This guide got me through organic chem, I only wish I'd bought it earlier in the semester and I might have four-pointed the class. Great idea if you're having a hard time studying by lecture alone. Gives very simple, concise summaries of concepts with lots of examples and diagrams.
Reviews
This book simplifies the many aspects covered in "Fessenden & Fessenden" book, and the rxn's at the end are extremely helpful to study for exams. Unfortunately, this book doesn't really get into nucleic acids, but it does a great job covering all functional groups synthesis & rxns! A key book for reference as well as explanations regarding intermediates for rxns. A+

X-Ray Lasers 2006

X-Ray Lasers 2006
P.V. Nickles | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 600 | Physics
The search for table-top and repetitive pump schemes during the last decade has been the driving force behind the spectacular advances demonstrated during the 10th International Conference on X-Ray Lasers, organized in 2006 in Berlin. Since 1986, international experts have gathered every two years at this established conference to discuss the progress in theory, experiment and application of plasma-based soft X-ray lasers. Traditionally, the conference sessions devoted to complementary and alternative sources of short wavelength radiation, such as high harmonics, XFEL or incoherent X-rays are organized so as to emphasize the role of X-ray laser research in relation to the other short wavelength sources. Grazing incidence pumping (GRIP) and seeding with high harmonics were the dominant topics of the conference. High repetition rate and portable X-ray lasers were reported to have been applied in metrology and photochemistry for the first time.
The proceedings of this series of conferences constitute a comprehensive source of reference of the acknowledged state-of the-art in this specific area of laser and plasma physics.

Index Theory, Determinants and Torsion for Open Manifolds

Index Theory, Determinants and Torsion for Open Manifolds
Jurgen Eichhorn | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 352 | Mathematics
For closed manifolds, there is a highly elaborated theory of number-valued invariants, attached to the underlying manifold, structures and differential operators. On open manifolds, nearly all of this fails, with the exception of some special classes. The goal of this monograph is to establish for open manifolds, structures and differential operators an applicable theory of number-valued relative invariants. This is of great use in the theory of moduli spaces for nonlinear partial differential equations and mathematical physics. The book is self-contained: in particular, it contains an outline of the necessary tools from nonlinear Sobolev analysis.

Stephen King's Danse Macabre

Stephen King's Danse Macabre
Stephen King | 1987-02-15 00:00:00 | Berkley | 464 | Horror
Tour of the whole horror genre in books, film, radio, and TV by the most popluar writer in the genre today.
In the fall of 1978 (between The Stand and The Dead Zone), Stephen King taught a course at the University of Maine on "Themes in Supernatural Literature." As he writes in the foreword to this book, he was nervous at the prospect of "spending a lot of time in front of a lot of people talking about a subject in which I had previously only felt my way instinctively, like a blind man." The course apparently went well, and as with most teaching experiences, it was as instructive, if not more so, to the teacher as it was to the students. Thanks to a suggestion from his former editor at Doubleday, King decided to write Danse Macabre as a personal record of the thoughts about horror that he developed and refined as a result of that course.

The outcome is an utterly charming book that reads as if King were sitting right there with you, shooting the breeze. He starts on October 4, 1957, when he was 10 years old, watching a Saturday matinee of Earth vs. the Flying Saucers. Just as the saucers were mounting their attack on "Our Nation's Capital," the movie was suddenly turned off. The manager of the theater walked out onto the stage and announced, "The Russians have put a space satellite into orbit around the earth. They call it ... Spootnik."

That's how the whole book goes: one simple, yet surprisingly pertinent, anecdote or observation after another. King covers the gamut of horror as he'd experienced it at that point in 1978 (a period of about 30 years): folk tales, literature, radio, good movies, junk movies, and the "glass teat". It's colorful, funny, and nostalgic--and also strikingly intelligent. --Fiona Webster
Reviews
This is a great book, for its time. Just wish he would write a more recent one.
Reviews
This book, written using the author's notes from a college course he taught, explores the techniques that horror writers, filmmakers, and television producers use to scare us, entertain us, and keep us coming back for more. Along the way, King explores the horror genre from the 1950's through the 1980's and traces several key influences on his development as a horror fan, then author.

The author finds the roots of modern horror in three "tarot cards" or character archetypes, each represented by a key literary work. Our expectations about "The Vampire" were formed by Bram Stoker's Dracula; we see the essence of "The Werewolf" in the protagonist of Robert Lewis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde; and experience "The Thing Without a Name" as recurring versions of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein. He traces the influence of these themes in written fiction, radio, movies, television and in popular culture.

Most interesting is King's three-level taxonomy of fear reactions. The most refined is "terror" as the suspenseful anticipation of fright which can be induced by a skilful writer with the monsters off-stage. He believes that finely-tuned terror is best achieved through books and radio because they require more active engagement by their audiences. "Horror" is secondary, as we recoil from the hidden monster as it is revealed. "Revulsion" is the lowest, most visceral reaction triggered when we are "grossed out" by slime, gore and vomit. King admits that as an author he makes unrestrained use of all three.

This book is recommended for horror fans, Stephen King fans, and all those who work to improve their writing. Readers can learn more about the author's writing style and process in his subsequent nonfiction works On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft and Secret Windows: Essays and Fiction on the Crafts of Writing.
Reviews
Danse Macabre, to me, is the singular book that showcases Stephen King's prowess as a writer, more than the novels and the short stories. It is the singular piece of work that made me sit up and take notice. It showed me what kind of a writer King really is beneath the surface: a complex yet infinitely understandable author with a well honed style which is well liked by both the young and the old, an author with a unique voice, a multifaceted voice that is logical and yet surreal at the same time, an entertaining author capable of hooking us in with a single sentence. In many ways, Danse Macabre is the definitive introduction to King's work as a whole and maybe even to King himself.

He draws us into a journey into a genre and field he so excels in, which is Horror. Just from the two forenotes alone, we can see and feel his passion for Horror: his references to Dracula and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, among many, sets the tone and feel for what's to come next. He starts off introducing us to terror, using the horror movies of the 1950s to explain just what terror means to him, putting it under the microscope, dissecting its pieces. He tells us why we, as a human race, tend to gravitate towards the genre. He then moves on to describing the various archetypes of the genre citing the three important books which have shaped it: Dracula, Frankenstein and Robert Louis Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde. There's even a brief autobiographical chapter explaining how he came to like the genre, which should interest the fans. But, the bulk of the book, the portion of the book I loved the most, is King's thesis on the various conventional mediums Horror appears on: Radio, TV, Movies and literature. That portion of the book fascinated me the most.

King does such a good job, describing every work or example of horror fiction in those chapters with such amazing detail, that I read all of it straight through. It was that engaging, smooth flow of logic in his words that hooked me. The macro-dissection from the earlier chapters had carried into the later ones: he delved into such disparate works as Peter Straub's highly successful Ghost Story and The Exorcist, bringing us all, horror fans and non-fans alike, into an amazing path down the cornerstones of the genre. This thrilled me: I credit this book for renewing my love for the genre to a point where I even started picking up alot of the works King described here.

Which, I think, was King's ultimate motivation for publishing Danse Macabre in the first place. This book overwhelms and exhilarates the reader at the same time, which can be said for the rest of his work in general. And that is why I think you should pick this book up, especially if you are a person who hates Horror to the bone...
Reviews
Stephen King must have gotten tired of answering the question `Why do you write such horrible stuff (and why do we read it)?'

Danse Macabre is sort of a wildly expanded version of the introduction he wrote for his first short story collection: Night Shift. Here, he discusses his love for the horror genre and explains what he finds valuable about it. This leads him to a survey of horror in the source of novels, films, radio and comics from the 1950's through the '80's.

Reading through the book, it is pretty dated. If you're an oldster like me who can remember the seventies and eighties the book ought to give you a heady dose of nostalgia and maybe remind you of some books and movies that should be checked out again, or some books you wanted to read back then, but have forgotten about.

However, if you are younger and can't remember stuff like Dark Shadows then the book's examples could come off as too unfamiliar for enjoyment. He is mainly focused on the years 1950-80 (with detailed side trips to praise the three horror bedrocks Dracula, Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) so depending on your age/interest in what the state of horror was at that time, your mileage may vary.

I enjoy the way the book was written, because even in his non-fiction he still has the gift for the gab and I enjoy his writing persona. Other reviewers that I respect didn't enjoy that so much, so maybe it depends on how much you like King's style.

You'll also get more horror book and movie recommendations than you can shake a stick at. He gives some interesting analysis of The House Next Door, The Haunting of Hill House, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Ghost Story, Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Doll Who Ate His Mother and The Incredible Shrinking Man.

This book also deserves credit for sparking my interest in Richard Matheson. King is fairly generous in recommending other horror writers and gives clear explanations of why he thinks the good ones are good.

I do wish he would do a companion book. Hey, in 2010 he could cover the 80's, '90's and '00's. That would give him another thirty year block. That would be cool.

Written by two of its inventors, Planning Extreme Programming shows you how to implement XP by using a simple, effective process. This remarkably short (yet remarkably useful) title will give any XP manager or programmer a perspective on delivering software that meets the needs of customers better.

Simplicity is the watchword of the XP software process. This book is virtually devoid of traditional software-engineering jargon and design diagrams, and yet does a good job of laying the foundation of how to perform XP--which is all about working with a customer to deliver features incrementally.

The terminology in the book is commonsensical. (In the terms of XP, each iteration adds certain new features, or stories. It's up to the customer to decide what functionality is more important and will be delivered first. By never letting a working build get out of sight, the XP process virtually ensures that software will be close to what the customer wants.)

Early chapters borrow analogies from everyday experience--like planning a trip or driving a car--to set the stage for XP process planning. The book has plenty of advice for dealing with the stakeholders (customers) of a project. Because of confidentiality agreements, however, we don't get many details from the real world, although the discussion is anchored by a hypothetical project for planning the Web site of the future for travel, with some specifics.

There is plenty of advice for planning projects, based on individual and team `velocity` (a measure of productivity) and the like--practical suggestions for running daily, short status meetings (in which all of the participants stand up, to keep them short). Clearly, there's a culture that surrounds many XP teams, and this text does a good job of conveying some of this to the reader.

At fewer than 150 pages, Planning Extreme Programming is notably concise, and that's probably the whole point. Most shops today work on Internet time, which doesn't wait for extensive project analysis and design documents. In XP, you create working software from the very start. This book is an essential guide to anyone who's working in XP shops or who might be interested in what this innovative, iterative software process can offer. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered:Introduction to planning Risk management in software `Driving` as a metaphor for software development Roles for software development: business vs. technical people Four variables for project planning: cost, quality, time, and scope Predicting future programmer productivity, based on past performance Project scope and estimation The XP process: software releases, iterations, stories, collecting, and writing stories (features) Hints for ordering features Tips on planning and status meetings Using visual graphs to monitor project progress Tracking and fixing bugs Project red flags

Objective overview of XP planning
Using a very objective and simple approach, the book presents the xp way of planning in a very easy and enjoyable way. It does not contain much practical advice, but it is an excellent starting point for someone who is not familiar with xp and its practices. After reading this book one should definitely look for `Agile Estimating And Planning` from Mike Cohn. It contains a more thorough approach on the subject.

Begin Your XP Journey Here
Well, I had been tentative about spending time investigating the meaning of `Extreme Programming`, based primarily on what I consider to be a name that smacks of jargon, and because I thought that the audience for this development approach was young hip gamer-types who wanted to develop business applications! I now appologize to those who synthesized the techniques (although I still consider the name to be unfortunate, sorry). I am optimistic that this approach to development will solve many of the problems that I have faced over the years, and that this solution is much simpler than I could have dreamed of! This book is just 130 pages, and the techniques are clearly, succinctly, and I think expertly described by Kent and Martin. The level of humor is good, and the practicality of the solution is clear.

crackles with ideas and fleshes out more of XP
Kent Beck and Martin Fowler have to be something of a `dream team` for a computer book. Not only was this book informative and interesting, but I actually enjoyed reading it. The book crackles with ideas and sparkles with a subtle wit.

The content of the book covers all aspects of planning, managing and tracking progress on an XP (Extreme Programming) project and is a worthy companion to Kent Beck's anthemic XP Explained. Hard stuff missed out from the earlier work such as how to estimate how long things will take, how to write user stories and how to organize the details of iterations and releases is explained in a straightforward way. It also introduces a few new key XP concepts, showing that this radical methodology didn't spring fully formed into the mind of Beck, but is still evolving. One such key is `Yesterdays Weather`, the idea that you can't go far wrong by using past performance as an initial guess for future results.

If you are at all intrigued by the new `agile` methodologies, read XP Explained and then this one. Then buy a few more copies for your management.

Excellent book
This book lays out the point of planning, the approach taken, and the steps to do.

This book has a lot of content not found in any other XP book that I own. The gold nuggets in here are useful for project management for years to come. It's a 5 star for sure.

How exactly to plan XP?
This book is very valuable if you already started to practice Extreme Programming. It contains a very encouraging foreword by Tom DeMarco. The first nine chapters are introductory, and you may skip them if you read the XP Manifesto `Extreme Programming Explained` by Kent Beck. Chapters from ten to twenty three contain valuable information not found in any other XP-related book.

- How exactly to plan releases? What if frequent releases aren't appropriate and marketing demands to release once a year?

- How exactly to write user stories, and how to handle them? Although the reader may find some sample stories in `Extreme Programming Installed` by Ron Jeffries, Ann Anderson and Chet Hendrickson, the stories in the `Planning Extreme Programming` are used as core elements in the whole planning process, shown as example.

- How exactly to build the iteration plan and the release plan? How to track an iteration?

I would also like to recommend `Extreme Programming Applied: Playing to Win` by Ken Auer, Roy Miller, Ward Cunningham. I think this is the most practical book on XP ever written.

I would also like to recommend the titles about individual XP aspects:
- Design Improvement: `Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code ` by Martin Fowler;
- Test-Driven Development: `Test Driven Development: By Example ` by Kent Beck;
- Sustainable Pace: `Slack: Getting Past Burnout, Busywork, and the Myth of Total Efficiency` by Tom DeMarco;
- Pair Programming: `Pair Programming Illuminated` by Laurie Williams and Robert Kessler;
- Whole Team: `Agile Software Development` by Alistair Cockburn;
- Planning Game: `Planning Extreme Programming` by Kent Beck, Martin Fowler;
- Small Releases: `Software Project Survival Guide` by Steve C McConnell.

Spread Spectrum Communications Handbook, Electronic Edition

Spread Spectrum Communications Handbook, Electronic Edition
Marvin Simon,Jim Omura,Robert Scholtz,Barry Levitt,Marvin K. Simon,Jim K. Omura,Robert A. Scholtz | 2001-09-26 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill Professional | 1248 | Engineering
*An exhaustive engineering reference on the workings of spread spectrum--the basis of CDMA (Call Divison Multiple Access) *Covers spread spectrum for wireless LANs *Includes CDMA security issues *Complete with a CD-ROM containing the entire book in a searchable PDF format
Reviews
This book is the master piece in spread spectrum communications. One can find the complete information in this book on the origin of spread spectrum communications, the fundamental knowledge in DS and FH systems, and applications. It gives in-depth knowledge in critical topics, including antijamming, sequences, synchronization and SS system performance analysis, etc. This book has served for a very large number of readers, including undergraduate students, graduate students, engineers and researchers. Many researchers in spread spectrm communication theory started with this book. Many of them have become famous and are leading in communication theory research. The rich figures showing implmentation are very helpful to practitioners.
Reviews
The authors focus primarily on military applications with hostile jammers, rather than commercial applications where co-channel interference is the main concern. The direct-sequence (DS) CDMA parts, however, are neither comprehensive nor up-to-date. This text would not deserve its label of "handbook" in its DS-CDMA coverage.

The frequency-hop (FH) CDMA parts of this text contain much useful and detailed mathematical exposition that I cannot readily find elsewhere in one volume. Quite inconveniently, the FH-CDMA sections are inter-mingled with the DS-CDMA sections. While I find plenty of useful mathematical details on FH-CDMA, those details are presented with little cohesion and offer little qualitative insight. I find myself buried with an avalanche of details with limited perspective.

The technical exposition here is truly terrible. I have just been reading the following sentence for several minutes and am yet to figure out its meaning: "In particular assume the simple repeat m code where for each data bit, m identical BFSK tones are sent where each of these tones are hopped separately." In what sense are these tones "identical" but yet "separate"? A simple equation here would have helped. In fact, I get so irritated by this poor technical writing that I get on the web and write this review to vent my frustration. The authors' aversion to use rigorous mathematics in their exposition does not help. The exposition ends up with very wordy but vague verbal descriptions, in place of concise and exact elucidations.

Vitality: The Best of Living

Vitality: The Best of Living
Richard Esser | 2008-07-01 00:00:00 | Algora Publishing | 252 | Depression
Optimistic and easy to read, this book gives practical new insights into how to get the best out of living and how to cope with the worst.

The author sets out six key elements of the severest desperation that people can experience: rage, panic, violence, hopelessness, and self-destructiveness. The central problem of living, he shows, concerns the need to turn those elements of desperation into their corresponding aspects of vitality. The book sets out six sliding scales that connect craziness with creativity, rage with courage, panic with initiative, and other positive mechanisms that can be harnessed to bring self fulfillment.

With a focus on the fundamental spheres of living: loving, friendship, learning, work, idealism and leisure life, the author makes clear what is the true value that can be gathered in each sphere, what makes things go terribly wrong in each sphere, and how one can deal effectively with such difficulty.

Along the way, he describes and demonstrates how those who would help others can most effectively give them the courage to go ahead and work toward what they want most in life. Personal stories illustrate how rage may be used to fuel courage, panic may generate initiative, and hopelessness can be turned to achievement, bringing a new vitality to life.

Partial Order in Environmental Sciences and Chemistry

Partial Order in Environmental Sciences and Chemistry
Rainer Brüggemann,Lars Carlsen | 2006-08-29 00:00:00 | Springer | 406 | Engineering

The environmental and chemical sciences are ever more reliant on computers. This dependence needs formalization, and the theory of algebraic relations is one possibility. Under algebraic relations, "order" turns out to be of special interest in many applicational fields. Internationally renowned authors explain the theory and practice of order relations in such a way, that no specific mathematical skill is needed to understand the advantages of this algebraization. As the order relations are very general and simple, they can be used quite universally. For example, the structure of chemicals and their properties; evaluation of waste disposal sites, decision support for river management; and the way to measure biodiversity are examples of the broadness of the concept.
This book is recommended to those, who are interested in the interface between sciences and management.

Redox Biochemistry

Redox Biochemistry
Ruma Banerjee,Donald Becker,Martin Dickman,Vadim Gladyshev,Stephen Ragsdale | 2007-12-17 00:00:00 | Wiley | 317 | Biochemistry
This is the premier, single-source reference on redox biochemistry, a rapidly emerging field. This reference presents the basic principles and includes detailed chapters focusing on various aspects of five primary areas of redox biochemistry: antioxidant molecules and redox cofactors; antioxidant enzymes; redox regulation of physiological processes; pathological processes related to redox; and specialized methods. This is a go-to resource for professionals in pharmaceuticals, medicine, immunology, nutrition, and environmental fields and an excellent text for upper-level students.
Reviews
This book is concise and covers wide range of topics. However, the background info is insufficient, and thus, I would not recommend this book for a true beginner. It requires some level of foundational chemical as well as biological knowledge to understand the concepts presented in this book. If you need a superficial reading on various topics on oxidative stress/antioxidant system/redox system, then this book is for you. However, I would rather recommend Free Radicals in Biology and Medicine instead if you need an in-depth understanding of the redox system.
Reviews
I started refering to the book for a redox biochemistry course. During the course realised that the book deals with almost all redox related events in a cell - the redox enzymes & pathways, small molecules, free radicals and pathological consequences.

A review article can be referred if more information is needed about a specific system. But overall this book is a great resource to learn & integrate redox systems.

Reviews
I found this book very helpful in looking at different antioxidants, enzymes and pathways involved in redox. The information is very concise and for someone just starting out in this field this book is much better than reading as many review articles. Mainly, because the descriptions give just enough information to understand the mechanism and relevance of each compound/pathway. There are not many references given so if you need more specific information about a topic this isn't the right book.

Theoretical Foundations of Law and Economics

Theoretical Foundations of Law and Economics
Mark D. White | 2008-12-22 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 302 | Economics
The economic approach to law, or "law and economics," is by far the most successful application of basic economic principles to another scholarly field, but most of the critical appraisal of the field has been scattered among law reviews and economics journals. Theoretical Foundations of Law and Economics is the first original, book-length examination of the methodology and philosophy of law and economics, featuring new essays written by leading legal scholars, philosophers, and economists. The contributors take issue with many of the key tenets of the economic approach to law, such as its assumption of rational behavior, its reliance on market analogies, and its adoption of efficiency as the primary goal of legal decision-making. They discuss the relevance of economics to the law in general, as well as to substantive areas of the law, such as contracts, torts, and crime.

Strategic Intelligence: Business Intelligence, Competitive Intelligence, and Knowledge Management

Strategic Intelligence: Business Intelligence, Competitive Intelligence, and Knowledge Management
Jay Liebowitz | 2006-03-27 00:00:00 | Auerbach Publications | 248 | MIS
Strategic intelligence (SI) has mostly been used in military settings, but its worth goes well beyond that limited role. It has become invaluable for improving any organization's strategic decision making process. The author of Strategic Intelligence: Business Intelligence, Competitive Intelligence, and Knowledge Management recognizes synergies among component pieces of strategic intelligence, and demonstrates how executives can best use this internal and external information toward making better decisions.

Divided into two major parts, the book first discusses the convergence of knowledge management (KM), business intelligence (BI), and competitive intelligence (CI) into what the author defines as strategic intelligence. The second part of the volume describes case studies written by recognized experts in the fields of KM, BI, and CI. The case studies include strategic scenarios at Motorola, AARP, Northrop Grumman, and other market leaders.

About the Editor
Jay Liebowitz, D.Sc., is a full professor in the Graduate Division of Business and Management and program director for the Graduate Certificate in Competitive Intelligence at Johns Hopkins University.
The first knowledge management officer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, he also served as the Robert W. Deutsch Distinguished Professor of Information Systems at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, professor of Management Science at George Washington University, and Chaired Professor of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the U.S. Army War College. Dictionary of Mining, Mineral, and Related Terms

Dictionary of Mining, Mineral, and Related Terms
American Geological Institute,U S Bureau of Mines | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Amer Geological Institute | 646 | Engineering
This new edition, containing 28,500 terms, incorporates the technological developments and environmental regulations that have changed the minerals industry so dramatically. It is the culmination of a 5-year effort incorporating not only standard mining-related terms but also terms in peripheral areas, such as the environment, marine mining, leaching, pollution, automation, health and safety. Many of these terms now have a legal definition based on law or regulation.
Reviews
This is an essential reference for any budding mining engineer or geologist and even for experienced professionals.

There is no better reference available that I am aware of.

The only minor criticism that I have is that it is biassed towards USA terminology rather than adopting global terminology, but that is quite understandable.

Smoothing and Decay Estimates for Nonlinear Diffusion Equations: Equations of Porous Medium Type (Oxford Lecture Series in Mathematics and Its Applications)

Smoothing and Decay Estimates for Nonlinear Diffusion Equations: Equations of Porous Medium Type (Oxford Lecture Series in Mathematics and Its Applications)
Juan Luis Vázquez | 2006-10-12 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 248 | Mathematics
This text is concerned with the quantitative aspects of the theory of nonlinear diffusion equations; equations which can be seen as nonlinear variations of the classical heat equation. They appear as mathematical models in different branches of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Engineering, and are also relevant in differential geometry and relativistic physics. Much of the modern theory of such equations is based on estimates and functional analysis.

Concentrating on a class of equations with nonlinearities of power type that lead to degenerate or singular parabolicity ("equations of porous medium type"), the aim of this text is to obtain sharp a priori estimates and decay rates for general classes of solutions in terms of estimates of particular problems. These estimates are the building blocks in understanding the qualitative theory, and the decay rates pave the way to the fine study of asymptotics. Many technically relevant questions are presented and analyzed in detail. A systematic picture of the most relevant phenomena is obtained for the equations under study, including time decay, smoothing, extinction in finite time, and delayed regularity.

Multivariate Statistics: A Vector Space Approach

Multivariate Statistics: A Vector Space Approach
Morris L. Eaton | 2007-12-31 00:00:00 | Inst of Mathematical Statistic | 512 | Mathematics
Reviews
Eaton provides a well-written treatment of multivariate analysis but with the geometric rather than the algebraic approach. For those who are better at geometry than algebra this approach that involves Euclidean spaces may be easier to understand than the algebraic approach that is common in many leading texts including Anderson. I find this approach to be a little more natural. It is much like the Hilbert space approach to stochastic processes where orthogonality equates to zero correlation or independence in the Gaussian case.

America's First Women Philosophers: Transplanting Hegel, 1860-1925 (Continuum Studies in American Philosophy)
Dorothy G. Rogers | 2005-04-16 00:00:00 | Continuum | 192 | Philosophy
This is the first book about the women of the early American Idealist movement in philosophy. The movement started in St. Louis, Missouri in 1858, becoming more influential as women joined and influenced its development. Many of these women were pioneers in feminist thought, in the expansion of education, and of the woman's role in it as teachers and scholars. Chief among them were Susan E. Blow, Anna C. Brackett, Grace C. Bibb, Ellen M. Mitchell, and Marietta Kies. This book devotes a chapter to the life, practical work, and philosophical ideas of each of them. These were the first American women as a group to plunge into philosophy proper, bridging those years between the amateur, paraprofessional, and professional academic philosopher. Dorothy Rogers' new book at last gives them the attention they deserve.

Adapting Cities to Climate Change: Understanding and Addressing the Development Challenges

Adapting Cities to Climate Change: Understanding and Addressing the Development Challenges
Jane Bicknell,David Dodman,David Satterthwaite | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Earthscan Publications Ltd. | 384 | Economics
Climate change is one of the most pressing issues affecting the world today. Although half of the world's population lives in urban areas, little consideration has been given to the effects that climate change will have on urban dwellers, especially in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Yet these regions have most of the world's urban population, including most of its largest cities. Their urban centers already face a wide variety of environmental and development challenges, including large sections of their populations living in informal settlements, often on sites at risk from extreme weather, with large deficits in provision for water, sanitation and drainage.

As noted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Fourth Assessment, these are likely to exacerbate vulnerability to climate change. Even more importantly, very little attention has been paid to the issue of adaptation, preventing the loss of lives, livelihoods and assets in urban centres as temperatures and sea levels rise and as extreme events become more frequent and more intense. Yet while the concentration of people and economic activities in towns and cities can intensify their vulnerability, this same concentration provides the opportunity to build safe housing and protective infrastructure, create resilient livelihoods and develop urban systems that reduce risks.

This volume brings together, for the first time, a wide-ranging and detailed body of information identifying and assessing risk, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change in urban centers in low- and middle-income countries. Framed by an overview of the main possibilities and constraints for adaptation, the contributors examine the implications of climate change for cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and propose innovative agendas for adaptation. The book should be of interest to policy makers, practitioners and academics who face the challenge of addressing climate change vulnerability and adaptation in urban centers throughout the global South.

Inside the Windows 95 Registry: A Guide for Programmers, System Administrators, and Users

Inside the Windows 95 Registry: A Guide for Programmers, System Administrators, and Users
Ron Petrusha | 1996-08-01 00:00:00 | O'Reilly Media | 594 | Windows OS
What Windows 95 developers have been looking for! An in-depth examination of the Windows 95 registry, the new central "storage facility" for settings that replaces most of the old SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI settings found in Windows 3.x. This book covers remote registry access, differences between the Win95 and NT registries, and registry backup. You'll also find a thorough examination of the role that the registry plays in OLE, coverage of undocumented registry services, and more. Petrusha shows programmers how to access the Win95 registry from Win32, Win16, and DOS programs in C and Visual Basic. VxD sample code is also included. The book includes a diskette with registry tools such as REGSPY, a program that shows exactly how Windows applications, libraries, and drivers use settings in the registry.
To take full advantage of 32-bit Windows, programmers need to know their way around the Registry, the centralized repository for information about the PC, operating system, and applications. With sample code in both C and Visual Basic, Inside the Windows 95 Registry explains how you can use the Registry to store application-specific data, add options to the File/New menu in the Windows Explorer, register OLE components, and support dynamic changes to hardware configuration via Plug and Play--and much more.
Reviews
I needed to find a book that delved into the Win9x registry in the same amount of depth as this one, but this book is almost totally VB & C oriented. I bought it looking for a tools I could use within the command shell that's native to Win9x, but even though it didn't have what I was looking for, it's still a great book, but it's definitely a programmers guide, not an administrative tool. Since I got it, some friends have told me how a combo of Kix & Rexx scriptinig is actually what I'm looking for.

I still give it four stars because I can't knock it for not having what I want, because what it has is very, very good.
Reviews
If you are going to program with registry, this one is your must have. There are in-depth explanations of backing up, restoring and accessing to the registry, plenty of examples in the book. The author also address the registry(key)difference between WindowsNT and Windows95, though not very thorough. Except some functions are "obsolete" (i.e. getwinflags()) and all of them are used "old fashioned" c, the codes in those examples are well tested. More over, there are two charpters are dedicated to "VB" programers and whenever possible, the author tries to show the example in both "C" and "VB". I would like to see the second version of this book explaining more about WindowsNT registry and using MFC.
Reviews
This was the first "registry" book that I bought and I measure all of the others by it. If you are a programmer, this is *the bible* of registry programming as far as I am concerned. My only disappointment was the lack of a "reference" to most common registry entries. There are a number to be found, but they are scattered through-out the book and there aren't enough.
