Black at Heart

Black at Heart
Leslie Parrish | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Signet | 368 | Fiction Other
What would you do if a call made you choose between the career rulebook and your moral one? In Black at Heart the Special Agent in Charge of the Black CAT's must make this decision. Wyatt knows that his own moral code has come at odds with the FBI before and without hesitation, he puts a member of his team ahead of it again. Lily let her emotions blind her and she went semi around her boss in order to capture an obsession. I was so upset when I learned that Lily had died in book two and beyond happy when she was suddenly back in Wyatt's life. I had seen that Wyatt and Lily were heading together in baby steps. I loved how Ms. Parrish tied up loose threads and filled in the blanks in both Wyatt's and Lily's lives. How Wyatt and Lily worked together to solve who was trying to kill a supposedly dead person, kept me up reading until the book was done. The loyalty of the entire team seemed to be the cherry on top as Wyatt and Lily struggled to come to terms with the people they were now, and the passion between them that could not be denied any longer. Outstanding ending to the initial three books in this great new series.

I just have to Joyfully Recommend Black at Heart and in fact, I recommend the entire Black CAT's series so far. I really hope that more books in this series show up soon, as I can just see Wyatt daring the FBI to close down his team, and the team showing up other agents by solving intricate internet crimes.

Hematologic Malignancies: Acute Leukemias

Hematologic Malignancies: Acute Leukemias
Elihu H. Estey,S.H. Faderl,H.M. Kantarjian | 2007-12-10 00:00:00 | Springer | 296 | Internal Medicine

Better therapy of acute leukemias depends ultimately on better understanding of the distinction between leukemic and normal progenitor cells. Thus, several chapters in this volume describe current knowledge of acute leukemia biology and discuss new classification systems that have arisen consequent to emerging insights into pathogenesis. Treatment has also improved for particular types of acute leukemia. Given our intention that the book be useful to clinicians, we pay particular attention to these advances, to management of acute leukemia in general, and to development of new therapies.

Uygur Patronage in Dunhuang: Regional Art Centres on the Northern Silk Road in the Tenth Century (Brill's Inner Asian Library)

Uygur Patronage in Dunhuang: Regional Art Centres on the Northern Silk Road in the Tenth Century (Brill's Inner Asian Library)
Lilla Russell-Smith | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Brill Academic Pub | 364 | Medieval
This volume is about the long-neglected, but decisive influence of Uygur patrons on Dunhuang art in the tenth and eleventh centuries. Through an insightful introduction to the hitherto little-known early history and art of the Uygurs, the author explains the social and political forces that shaped the taste of Uygur patrons. The cultural and political effects of Sino-Uygur political marriages are examined in the larger context of the role of high-ranking women in medieval art patronage.

Careful study of the iconography, technique and style sheds new light on important paintings in the collection of the British Museum in London, and the Musée national des Arts asiatiques-Guimet, in Paris, and through comparative analysis the importance of regional art centres in medieval China and Central Asia is explored. Richly illustrated with line drawings, as well as colour and black-and-white plates.

Environmental Evolution: Effects of the Origin and Evolution of Life on Planet Earth

Environmental Evolution: Effects of the Origin and Evolution of Life on Planet Earth
Lynn Margulis | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | MIT Press | 405 | Biology
This text provides an accessible introduction to critical changes in the biosphere that have occurred since life's origin. Based on a course developed by Lynn Margulis and colleagues over many years, it presents an integrated view of how our planet evolved. "Environmental Evolution" differs from Earth-science textbooks in its consideration of geology as it is shaped by life. Fifteen scientists reflect on major events in the history of life on Earth. Comparisons with the atmospheres of other planets, laboratory studies on the origins of life, and fossil evidence of microbial communities all contribute to the story of early life and its environment. The ability of modern bacteria to trap, bind, and precipitate calcium carbonate explains the presence of stromatolites from the Archean and Proterozoic eons. Evidence from cell biology provides clues to the origin of eukaryotic cells by multiple serial symbiosis. Transcending academic boundaries, the Gaia hypothesis shows how the sensing, growing, excreting, gas-exchanging, sediment-binding biota (plants, animals, and microbes) have irreversibly altered the third planet - from the origin of life some 14 billion years ago to the present. "Environmental Evolution" includes a glossary, charts and tables, lists of recommended readings, and an appendix that offers strategies for teaching, sample syllabuses, and suggestions for assignments and class presentations. Contributors include E.S. Barghorn, R. Buchsbaum, D.Deamer, S. Golubic, A. Knoll, A. Lazcano, J.E. Lovelock, L. Margulis, C. Matthews, M. Mc Elroy, C. Ponnamperuma, R. Siever, P. Strother, T. Reviews
This book is a good value. I was a little unsure about it when I heard it was a leadership book based on acting, but the connections to acting are very well done. It really focuses on the depth and feeling behind acting and genuineness of being a leader. And not in a hokey way. Great stories. Great exercises. Great examples. An easy read and a good one, too.
Reviews
Much more than a book on becoming a "polished" executive. I used this book with a client who is the youngest exec in his high tech firm, and we found the chapters to be helpful in his overall leadership development. I appreciated the author's writing on leadership thinking and outlook as well has the suggestions on external behaviors that communicate "presence". Ultimately, presence comes from within.
Reviews
At weLEAD we naturally receive hundreds of books on the subject of leadership from virtually every perspective and approach. We will give Leadership Presence credit for a truly novel and effective approach. Unlike most leadership authors Belle Linda Halpren and Kathy Lubar do not come from a strictly business school, military or academic background. It may be the very reason why this book is so enjoyable to read! The authors are highly skilled actresses and taught acting skills in Repertory Theater. Many of the students they had were various professionals including teachers, doctors, businesspeople and others. Because these individuals were able to use the theatre skills they acquired effectively in the workplace, the authors founded the Ariel Group in 1992. Since that time the Ariel Group has presented workshops to over 30,000 executives. This book is a result of that effort and the results achieved.

The main theme of Leadership Presence is simple yet profound. The authors define Leadership Presence as the "ability to connect authentically with the thoughts and feelings of others in order to motivate and inspire them to achieve a desired outcome". Throughout the book you will find a special emphasis on the word "authentic". This is not a book about motivating or manipulating others by using acting skills or pretence. It is a book that focuses on learning to authentically connect with the minds and hearts of others to effectively lead. Far too many business leaders conduct themselves in ways they think their executive roles require, rather than being themselves based on their heartfelt values. The result is that they come across as inauthentic and this breeds a lack of trust. The authors spend an admirable amount on the importance of values and introduce the reader to what they call the PRES Model of Leadership Presence.

Leadership Presence was written to teach techniques that will help the leader to motivate, inspire and reach out to others. It will help the reader to enhance relationships, build collaboration and flexibly deal with challenging situations. The book is composed of nine chapters divided into four sections suitably called "Acts". Act I discusses how one can learn to be completely in the moment. Act II analyzes the skills available to build relationships. Act III examines the appropriate way to express emotions and feelings. Act IV focuses on being yourself and reflecting your values in your behavior. Most chapters end with a section on exercises or practice guidelines to cement the information taught in the preceding chapter. Numerous personal stories and examples provided by the authors keep the material interesting and practical.

If you are new to the study of leadership you will enjoy this book. If you have read dozens of books on the study of leadership, you will love this book because it views this complex subject from a truly innovative and helpful angle. Sometimes we can get so immersed in a subject we can't "see the forest for the trees". Leadership Presence is one of those unique books that will help you to step back and see the forest because it gets to the very heart of leadership...authentic behavior and values.
Reviews
Why is it when some actors take the stage they automatically command the attention of the audience? It doesn't matter if they are not the most important part of the scene - they still command the audience's attention even when in the background. These people have a sense of presence; their very being and bearing demands respect. That ability to command respect is what this book is about. How does a real leader create this sense of presence such that he or she automatically has the attention and respect of those they lead?

The authors define presence as "the ability to connect authentically with the thoughts and feelings of others". While business has generally ignored this sense of presence and assumed that people will be led simply because they are employees, the acting profession lives or dies by this sense of presence. Business is now struggling to create loyal employees who think for theirselves and have a sense of being a part of a larger community. Business is looking for great leaders.

To help find or create these great leaders there has been a plethora of books about the attributes of great leaders; they communicate well, they treat others as important, etc. The difference between most management or leadership books and this one can best be illustrated by the art of dance. A good dancer can be mechanically perfect. Every twist, every turn, every leap is exactly as it should be, but still the dance is boring. On the other hand a dancer who truly feels and moves to the music as it were a part of their self creates a thing of beauty to see. That is where this book differentiates itself from the other books on leadership. The others are typically descriptions of what makes good leaders - the mechanics of the perfect dance. This book helps the leader to establish a sense of presence that in turn causes a sense of immediate respect in others - the dancer who feels the music.

At the end of each chapter are exercises to help the reader to learn to apply the lessons. The authors fill a deep chasm in management theory with this book. "Leadership Presence: Dramatic Techniques to Reach Out, Motivate and Inspire" is a highly recommended read and required reading for those in leadership positions of any kind.

David's review
Good book if you want a broad overview and outline of the procedures and tools needed to maintain Solaris Servers.

More of a broad overview, you can fill in the blanks elsewhere.

User review
this book is not for the technican
this book describes the areas within Solaris that managers (i.e. non-solaris personnel) would need to highlight important components of a complete solaris system, like SLA's, risks, benefits etc. View this book like this, and it is invaluable as a quick reference on key issues. the previous reviewer obviously just walked into a bookstore and picked up the first book he saw with Solaris in the title. a quick read of the table of contents and editorial comment would have been enough insight. It was for me!

User review
More political BS than technical
You may be very disappointed if you don't have a good look at this book before you buy it. It would be great for a manager in the political (vs. technical sysadmin) sense. But it's short on technical `meat`, and long on general concepts.

Power Quality: VAR Compensation in Power Systems

Power Quality: VAR Compensation in Power Systems
R. Sastry Vedam, Mulukutla S. Sarma | 2008-08-13 00:00:00 | Taylor & Francis Group, LLC | 304 | Electrical Engineering
Both deregulation in the electrical supply industry and the creation of new electricity markets present electric utility companies with the challenge of becoming more efficient without compromising quality of service.

Providing new solutions for this newly deregulated paradigm, Power Quality: VAR Compensation in Power Systems presents comprehensive coverage of power quality, harmonics, and static var compensators in one single volume. The book explains how to ensure that power quality is not affected by the harmonics generated by power electronic equipment and explains how to reduce labor costs and increase reliability of supply by employing a single pole autoreclosing scheme. It also addresses how to analyze frequency response of current transformers and voltage transformers while measuring harmonics.

Based on the authors̢۪ extensive experience in the electric supply industry, Power Quality enables engineers to meet the demands of increased loads, strengthen their transmission systems, and ensure reliable electric supply.

Breathless Koontz

Breathless Koontz
Dean Koontz | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Bantam | 432 | Fiction Other
In the Colorado Rockies, Grady Adams and his Irish wolfhound, Merlin, have just discovered two creatures unlike anything they've ever seen before. As they welcome these mysterious animals into their home, they soon discover that their arrival coincides with a wondrous event that will forever change their lives and millions of other all over the world.

Dean Koontz never seems ceases to astonish me with the amount of tricks up his sleeve. Each installment in his illustrious career is unique and otherworldly, with Breathless being no exception. In recent offerings Koontz has come under fire, unfairly so in my opinion, for not being the same guy who once scared us around every turn with evil characters and harrowing plots. Lately, dogs have become main characters more than usual, and for whatever reason a lot of fans and critics alike have not looked kindly upon his change of style. In a bold and effective move, Koontz sticks it to the doubters and transforms familiar elements in a way we never imagined.

Not only is Man's Best Friend featured in Breathless, but in this story animals play a bigger role than most of, if not all, Koontz's previous works. However, fans who feel like they have been missing out will be pleased to know that this is one of the most suspenseful novels Koontz has written in a while, with a fast paced plot laced with just the right amount of dread, wonder, and redemption. We're even treated to some frightening and disturbing scenes that will have many readers looking under their beds and in their closets long after reading. Once again Koontz`s prose and dialogue are delivered at the highest level as we follow several storylines to a powerful conclusion.

In the end we are left with a poignant glimpse into the beauty of nature and the mystery of life and the wonder that connects them. I love what Koontz has done of late, and I particularly love what he's given us here. Breathless is certainly a different kind of animal, but one that is well worth your time.

Complete Digital Photography
Well written book with explanantions that the beginner can follow and learn from. Excellent book for both the beginner or amateur photographer.

User review
Good information, but HARD TO READ!
First I want to say that I did not buy this book, but rather checked it out of the library. I am new to doing anything more than taking a small camera out of the case and `pointing and shooting.` I recently decided to really get into photography and buy a Digital SLR camera. I did a lot of research online but decided to get a book on the subject as well. The library here only had this book and I must admit that I learned quite a bit, but I find it very frustrating to read.

The author re-uses sentences and sometimes paragraphs repeatedly throughout the book! I can understand making important points a couple of times, but even minute settings that are common sense to someone with almost no experience such as myself do not need to re addressed multiple times across multiple chapters! It seems as though the author is very well versed in his subject, but is not well versed in how to teach others. The book reads very technically and at times is confusing to follow.

Another problem i noticed is the layout of the book is a bit hap-hazard at times. You are asked to refer to diagrams that are several chapters away on several occasions. If you want me to compare a diagram and discuss it's attributes, I should not have to flip pages (even one page!). I also noticed on occasion that what the author was discussing was not visible in the picture; and it seemed that the picture wasn't the correct one.

I learned a lot from this book, but it is visually unappealing, confusing to follow, and poorly laid out. That is why it gets only 2 stars.

User review
Complete Digital Photography
I have used film cameras for over 50 years and thus come from a back ground of using this media. My reason for purchasing this book was to gain knowledge of the digital photography which I have only experienced with video cameras. I am finding the book very readable and appears to answer many of my questions relating to upgrading to a digital SLR.

Prior to reading the book I was feeling some concern at the thought of spending relatively large sums of money on new digital equipment but now feel much more confident. I like the layout and the order of presentation and would certainly recommend the book to others making the transition from analogue to digital photography.

User review
The best book I've found on the subject
I am not a professional photographer, although I have owned more than one digital camera and recently purchased my first digital SLR. I have acquired several digital photography books over the past few years. No single book can do it all, but if I could have only one this would be my clear choice. The writer is a pro, as one reviewer noted, but his writing style simplifies the subject to the extent possible. If a person only wants to learn the basics for shooting in Auto mode then the camera's user guide will usually suffice and another book probably isn't necessary. I first read this book rather rapidly, start to finish. Since then I use it frequently as a quick reference, picking subjects as needed to refresh my memory or acquire more detail. The book is well organized and it's easy to find particular topics. The author covers pretty much the whole scene including camera selection, digital technology, composition, working with digital files, producing prints, and use of photo editors with emphasis on Adobe products. If you are a reader who truly wants to acquire useful information and who is willing to think, then I recommend this book.

User review
Completely satisfied
I started learning photography 25 years ago, and have spent 15 years as a travel writer/photographer based in Hong Kong, I have only in the past few weeks made the transition to a digital SLR, as I was sceptical about digital cameras over film SLRs. This book has smoothed the way for the switch, and I can't speak highly enough of it. There are many books on photography out there that are superficial - great covers masking a lack of substance. That is why I check out the Amazon book reviews before making a decision on which one to buy. Complete Digital Photography is absolutely thorough, and makes a complex subject easy to understand. No need to say more. The reviewers have said it already. Buy it! You won't be disappointed.

A great physical theory like Schrodinger s wave mechanics, when it is confinned, takes on its own impersonal exitence in the course of time, becomes completely detached from its originator, and is finally received as seH-evident. In this way one forgets how many inner struggles, hopes, and disappointments were bound up with its beginnings and one forgets too all the pros and cons of contemporary reactions to it. This more personal side can be reawakened into life if there are contemporary letters like the ones reproduced here.

The Creature from Jekyll Island : A Second Look at the Federal Reserve

The Creature from Jekyll Island : A Second Look at the Federal Reserve
G. Edward Griffin | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | American Media (CA) | 608 | Economics
Where does money come from? Where does it go? Who makes it? The money magicians' secrets are unveiled. We get a close look at their mirrors and smoke machines, their pulleys, cogs, and wheels that create the grand illusion called money. A dry and boring subject? Just wait!

You'll be hooked in five minutes. Reads like a detective story - which it really is. But it's all true. This book is about the most blatant scam of all history. It's all here: the cause of wars, boom-bust cycles, inflation, depression, prosperity.

Creature from Jekyll Island is a "must read." Your world view will definitely change. You'll never trust a politician again - or a banker.
Reviews
If you know nothing about economics but know something is wrong in America and want to find out what is really going on, read this book. The fundamental problem with our currency, the American dollar, is what is wrong. This book explains why. The Federal Reserve Bank is not federal, not a reserve and not a real bank. It is a partnership between the federal government and some very wealthy people who have rigged the system so that neither partner looses but everybody else does. This is a well written mystery book that explains exactly who the guilty are and how they continue with this scam. MUST READING!
Reviews
An eye-opening expose of the Federal Reserve. The ultra rich of the world maintaining control of the money all over their empires.

The ultimate greed of unscrupulous people who only care about themselves and to hell with humanity.
Reviews
I gave the book 5 stars even though the book is a little too long bc the subject matter far outweighs the execution.

This book will keep you from being deceived from every trick in the book the bankers will try to steal your money. It exposes the corruption of our banking system and therefore opens your eyes to how you can protect your wealth from being stolen.

If you can read this book and not feel compelled to educate people and fight the current banking system, then you're either a zombie or a banker.
Reviews
I used to work in banking 20 years ago. What most people do not understand about the banking system is this... Congress will pass a bill to print more money. When that money is placed into a bank account (i.e.: checking, money market, CD, etc...) the bank can actuall report that they have 90% more money available to loan to customers. (Example: If you open a checking account with $100, then the bank can claim to have $1,000 for the purposes of loans. Where does the extra $900 come from?) The extra 90% is printed by the treasury to allow the banks to perform their loans. When the loan is paid back, the 90% is adjusted (destroyed) to match the balance of the customers on hand. The interest that is paid with the loan is used to pay salary, wages, utilities, etc... So, when a 30 year loan for a $200,000 house is given to a customer, the bank will earn close to $600,000 in interest. The principle $200,000 is backed only by $20,000 worth of deposits. So when the bank receives up to $800,000 for a $200,000 house, the treasury must allow enough cash to be flowing in public to cover this amount. The Federal Reserve Act that was blessed by Congress has allowed the banks to work this way for money. The interest rate is used to control the flow of money. (If the public does not have enough money to cover their loans, the interest rate will then be changed to allow consumer prices to change. Money spent is more money flowing and more loans available to get more money out in public. The opposite is true when too much money is in public and consumer prices are threatening to change. The interest rate is adjust to prevent price changes, but interest rates on loans will eat-up the extra cash that flows throughout the public.) So, Congress and the Federal Reserve is to blame. Plus, interest rates are used to control the accumulation of public wealth, but the banks will always come out ahead. As for this book? The book is actually good. It provides a better history of money from ancient times to the present than anyother book that I have come across. My suggestion? Read this book and then do the necessary research to prove or disprove to yourself the facts therein. One or two minor points from other readers is not enough to condemn a 600 page book.
Reviews
Simply the best review of the genesis of the federal reserve that I have ever read. This is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the fundementals of our failing monetary policy.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga
Theos Bernard | 1968-01-01 00:00:00 | Red Wheel Weiser | 104 | Subjects
Reviews
I first read this extraordinary book in 1974, having obtained a copy from the UCLA library. Upon re-reading the text (this time using a copy from the UC Davis library) I was struck with just how arduous and focused was Bernard's quest.

His intention was "to test by personal experience the techniques of Hatha Yoga." (p. 11) In doing so he traveled to India and ultimately to Tibet when he was 27-years old. Along the way he visited many Indian cities and learned yoga first hand from several teachers. He took notes and used those notes as the basis for a dissertation to obtain a PhD from Columbia University in 1943. This book is based on that dissertation originally published by Columbia University Press in 1944.

At the time Bernard went to India in 1936 little was known in the West about the actual practice of hatha yoga. It was considered a mysterious and secret discipline, characterized by extreme physical practices leading to occult and supernatural powers. Bernard sought to test the truth of such claims. He concluded "...during my studies of the science of Yoga I found that it holds no magic, performs no miracles, and reveals nothing supernatural." He adds, cryptically: "...'by thoroughly practising first the (physical) training, one acquires the Knowledge of the True.' The training I have here communicated faithfully; but the 'Knowledge of the True,' because of its very nature, must remain a mystery." (p. 96)

Bernard was no dilettante or weekend warrior when it came to hatha yoga. He practiced all the regular asanas, mudras, bandhas, and kriyas including many extreme and demanding forms. There are 36 black and white plates in the book showing Bernard demonstrating various poses. Those photos were perhaps the most famous ones seen in the West until B.K.S. Iyengar's Light on Yoga came into print in the 1960s. Bernard once stood on his head for three hours; he learned to swallow a surgeon's gauze, four inches wide by twenty-two and a half feet long, to soak up the contents of his stomach (a kriya--a cleansing practice--called dhauti karma); he actually cut the lower tendons of his tongue (khecari mudra) as well as taught himself to draw up water into his colon and expel it (basti kriya).

Throughout the book Bernard has reference to the three classic yoga texts from the Middle Ages: Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Geranda Samhita, and Siva Samhita. He quotes from the texts and compares them with each other and with the instructions from his gurus. By the way, relatively new translations of these works are available from YogaVidya. Additionally Bernard has reference to the famous Yoga Sutras of Patanjali which were written some 2,000 years ago (or thereabouts). See my reviews of these four essential texts at Amazon.

In addition to having read and reviewed these books I too have practiced yoga beginning in 1974. Consequently Bernard's personal experiences expressed in such a candid and straight-forward manner have been of enormous interest.

The beginning question for the yogin is what is the purpose of yoga? The answer found as early as the Vedas is liberation from the delusions of this world (moksha). The practice of hatha yoga has long been considered the basis for that liberation. In Bernard's understanding it is through asana (postures), kriya (purifications), pranayama (breathing exercises), and various mudras (seals or restraints) that the practitioner is lead to samadhi (sometimes called trance or simply meditation, but actually samadhi is a state of mind characterized by an alert, fearless blissfulness). Well, that is my description and my experience. Bernard writes that he passes by "the theory of samadhi" to maintain his focus on "the more practical aspects of Yoga." (p. 76) This is no doubt wise since samadhi, like the less esoteric experience of meditation, is preeminently a personal experience that differs with the practitioners.

It is worth noting that Bernard does not report on his personal meditative experiences. He does near the end of the book give a report of a trance experience under the guidance of one of his gurus. In this connection I am reminded of this verse from Fitzgerard's "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam":

"Myself when young did eagerly frequent

Doctor and Saint, and heard great Argument

About it and about: but evermore

Came out by the same Door as in I went."

This is not to disparage Bernard's experience nor mine; it is only to suggest that one should take the ancient texts and their promises of superpowers and everlasting life with that grain of salt that might be delivered into the great ocean of Brahman while understanding that yoga is--as Bernard emphasizes--first and foremost a practice, a physical and mental skill that comes only after a lot of hard and steady work, and that one should have no expectations beyond health and vigor--which indeed are reward enough.

Nonetheless I have learned from yoga not that I might through some esoteric and strange practice achieve eternal life, but instead that I have no reason to fear death. Again that is more than reward enough.

The last printing of this book that I know of is the American Edition of 1968. The copy I have from Davis is the Fourth Impression from 1975. Amazon apparently has only used copies of various editions. It is a shame that no publisher has seen fit to bring this modern classic back into print.

(Since writing the above I have learned that a new edition of this book is available on Amazon's UK site.)
Reviews
Relates the experiences of a Westerner who studied and practiced yoga in India and Tibet, eventually disappearing (possibly killed) in 1947. I appreciate his many many references and footnotes to classic yogic texts, comparing the practices as mentioned in different texts and how it was taught to him. A very authentic and straightforward book of hatha yoga-- a classic.
Reviews
This is one of the best books I found on the subject. The writer is also a practitioner - a rare quality among many so-called writers. From his pictures, he LOOKS like he practices what he teaches (he looks lean, healthy, and clean-shaven). The main text of this book is free of religious symbology; Theos writes his experiences in a very factual, matter-of-fact style. He tells you where he has practical experience, and limits his teaching to that experience. Most other books make pointless excursions into Hindu mythology and Sanskrit, and thereby put off many non-Hindu readers.

His approach is like a breath of fresh air in a subject rampant with unnecessary mystical excursions. He provides an excellent roadmap of how to progress (you can adapt his regimen according to your needs). Reading the book, you are struck by a fresh viewpoint: Yoga is not just about flexibility, but more importantly, of strength and power.

If you are tired of books by bearded holy men with potbellies, who don't look like they are capable of picking up a winning lottery ticket off the street, then do try this book.

Secret Dead Men

Secret Dead Men
Duane Swierczynski | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | PointBlank | 224 | Fiction Other
"Secret Dead Men" is in a realm by itself.

When I picked up this book, I literally couldn't imagine where the author would take me from one page to the next. Swierczynski creates this odd afterlife (not the kind learned at church) and forces the reader to emotionally invest into the whacky characters and their plights.

Set in Philadelphia in the seventies, I didn't understand any of his cultural allusions. However, by the end of the novel, I was fully familiar with the Brain Hotel, the soul stealing capabilities of the protagonist, and even had a new appreciation of toilets.

This is the kind of book that will make you giddy with the eccentricity of it all... and might make you a tad disappointed in the next book you pick up. But, don't fear... I think the author has another novel coming out soon.

If it's anything like "Secret Dead Men," buy it on a long weekend. You'll want to do nothing else!

Saints (Pocket Essentials)

Saints (Pocket Essentials)
Giles Morgan | 2009-01-28 00:00:00 | Pocket Essentials | 160 | Saints

For millions of people saints provide comfort, hope and inspiration and act as intercessors to God. But whilst the earliest saints and martyrs served an essentially spiritual role within society their impact and influence can also be found today throughout the modern secular world. The term saint comes from the Latin word 'sanctus' meaning Holy. Many of the first saints were Christian martyrs who died for their faith. The original meaning of the accolade of martyr was 'witness'.

The earliest recorded account of the veneration of a Christian martyr relates to St Polycarp who died for his faith in 156 AD. The surviving text recounts that his fellow Christians gathered his bones or 'relics' together and placed them at a site where they could be re-visited on the anniversary of his death.

Initially, Christians prayed for their holy martyrs in memory of their sacrifices but over time began to regard them as intercessors between themselves and God. The sites of their burials became shrines for pilgrims to visit and their feast day's important events. However, it has been observed that many of the aspects of the cults of different saints can be found in pre-Christian traditions. In the ancient Greek world the concept of a patron or localised god or goddess was commonplace. For example the city of Athens was said to be under the protection of Athena whilst the matron goddess of Byzantium was Artemis.

During the Middle Ages the veneration of saints reached an apogee reflected in the popularity of the Golden Legend a written account of the lives of the saints compiled by Jacobus de Voragine. But where in the past individuals had become saints through the popular acclamation of the local community during the middle ages the Holy See itself would take sole responsibility for according that status. Pope Innocent III is now viewed as having established the right of the papacy to canonise individuals.

A study of the lives and values of those individuals who have been accorded the status of saints often reveals wildly differing world-views and philosophical outlooks on the part of those who revere them as such.

In an unexpected and fascinating turn of events slaves in the new world combined elements of their own traditions and spiritual beliefs with the European veneration of saints to produce a unique religious hybrid known as Santeria, a form of Voodoo practised in Cuba. More recently dramatic world events have led to the creation of modern saints such as the Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War and the recognition of the martyrdom of the Romanov family by the Russian church.

The stories of the lives of the saints and the different aspects of their cults underpin many of the fundamental concepts of the modern world. From the little known Christian figure that gave his name to St Valentine's Day to the mysterious St Nicholas or Santa Claus, saints continue to be invoked in the most commercial and arguably spiritually sterile of settings. Saints continue to serve as patrons of countries, professions, and occupations and provide help with medical, personal and spiritual problems. The differing roles of saints ranges from the surprising such as the archangel Gabriel being patron saint of broadcasters to the bizarre with St Quentin serving as the patron saint of Locksmiths.

Research in Labor Economics, Volume 28
Solomon W. Polachek | 2008-10-11 00:00:00 | JAI Press | 250 | Economics
This volume contains 13 new and important never before published chapters covering aspects of the employer-employee relationship. The volume is focused at the academic audience, but is also geared to government and business policy makers worldwide. The chapters use data from the US, Europe, Asia, and the Middle-East to answer a number of vital labor market questions. These include: Why has part-time work increased so dramatically in the 15 European Union countries? What changes in retirement behavior will be expected as countries change pension laws? Why do firms often use fixed-term instead of long-term employment contracts? How do employee work interruptions affect occupational choice? Why do both employers and employees often prefer additional fringe benefits to wage increases? Do academic certifications really signal higher worker quality? How is an individual's work ethic influenced by others in residential neighborhoods? And, why do risky jobs often pay lower wages when one might expect employees need better remuneration to take dangerous jobs?

This detailed study of the interface between psychotherapy and spirituality introduces professionally trained psychotherapists and mental health specialists to the subject of spirituality and the influence it may have in a therapeutic context. The majority of psychotherapists receive no formal training in the psychology of religion, or handle it with insufficient skill, feeling uncomfortable and ill-equipped to deal with the spiritual concerns of patients. Psychotherapy and Spirituality contributes to the development of professional know-how in the field of spirituality in a straightforward and practical way, avoiding complex doctrinal terminology.

Small Objects from the Pnyx I (Hesperia Supplement)

Small Objects from the Pnyx I (Hesperia Supplement)
Gladys R. Davidson,Dorothy Burr Thompson | 1943-11-21 00:00:00 | American School of Classical Studies | 172 | Greece
The range of material discarded by citizens attending the Athenian assembly on the Pnyx hill is hardly notable for its art historical interest. However, this catalogue of different sorts of objects found during excavations between 1931 and 1937 provides interesting insights into the social history of the city, especially ca. 425-325 B.C. when use of the Pnyx was at its height. The catalogue of each class of object is preceded by a short introductory essay. The book includes discussion of inscriptions, Dikasts' name-plates, coins, weights, graffiti and dipinti, sculpture, lamps, loomweights, spindle whorls, implements, fittings and molds, jewelry, seal impressions, votive objects, glass, and figurines.

Mentorship in Community Nursing: Challenges and Opportunities

Mentorship in Community Nursing: Challenges and Opportunities
Judith Canham,Joanne Bennett | 2002-01-03 00:00:00 | Wiley-Blackwell | 240 | Health Policy
The importance of the community practice teacher is increasing with the expansion in primary care. Universities around the country have developed courses for practice educators to provide definitive training for that role - there are currently few texts that support these courses directly.

This book aims to redress this by covering eight specialist areas of community practice: district nursing, health visiting, school nursing, children's community health nursing, community nursing mental health, community nursing learning disability, general practice nursing and occupational health nursing. The emphasis is strongly on practical issues rather than theory and each section considers practice-based dilemmas and offers appropriate debate.

Just What I Needed
As a filmmaking beginning to learn the craft, I found this book very helpful. It lays out all the information anyone needs to know to get started or to improve lighting techniques. It covers everything from the basics to more complex theories and methods. The information is laid out very well, not to become too overwhelming to the reader. The Author draws from his own experience and insights to help guide the reader in the right direction. It is a must have for any filmmakers library.

User review
Great text for beginners and experts alike
This book covers the subject clearly, quickly and without too much technical jargon; it's stuffed with wonderful visual illustrations, exercises and is formatted quite well.

It's (as is any book these days) a bit pricey, but worth every cent if you're serious about improving the quality of your work.

User review
Great information!
I got this book out of the library to read as a preparation for doing lighting on a low-budget movie I'm planning. Long story short, I devoured the book, then had to renew it so I could read it again and again.

People with big expensive lights will love the clear use of big expensive lighting equipment.

People who know nothing about lighting (like I did before I got this book) and have no money (like me) will love the low-budget chapter, and specifically the `spit and gaffer's tape` (author's words) list of equipment for those of us without deep pockets.

User review
Everything You Need To Know, and Interesting Too!
This is an amazing book. The guy is a true pro and explains everything you need to know to get takes that look professional on the first try.

The book is really well written and organized. I blows by while you learn all the hows and whys of lighting video.

I recomend this to anyone who feels that they are not at the professional level with lighting yet. It will change your life.

Enlightening book
Overall, I think this book is very easy to read. The author starts with the basic elements of lighting and builds on that foundation. I am using it with a lighting for video class that I am enrolled in, but would be very helpful by itself. The pictures really help to guide the process and set up your lighting scenerios properly.

How Things Persist

How Things Persist
Katherine Hawley | 2004-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press | 262 | Philosophy
interestingly the book doesn't start very promising, but towards the end it gets better and better. The only weakness is that sometimes she dismisses three-dimensionalist explanations too quickly. Hawley's views are often contraintuitive, but she is smart (in the good sense) in explaining philosophical worries away. I recommend this book for everyone interested in the metaphysics of persistence.
