Aristotle and the Science of Nature: Unity without Uniformity

Aristotle and the Science of Nature: Unity without Uniformity
Andrea Falcon | 2005-10-31 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 160 | Greece
Aristotelian scholars have argued that he regarded the natural world, and its study, as possessing a unique structure. This book examines Aristotle's philosophy of nature in this light. Claiming that the natural world exhibits unity without uniformity, it demonstrates that although he systematically investigated nature, Aristotle never forgot to recognize the limitations of natural science. Arguing that his claim led to the conviction that the heavens are made of a unique body, Andrea Falcon's book is essential reading for all students of Aristotle's philosophy of nature.

The Cuban Revolution: Origins, Course and Legacy, 2nd edition

The Cuban Revolution: Origins, Course and Legacy, 2nd edition
Marifeli Perez-Stable | 1999-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press | 288 | Misc
Nearly twenty years passed from the time of this book's first incarnation as a doctoral dissertation to its appearance in 1993. Were I faced with the task of writing The Cuban Revolution again, tabula rasa, I might approach it somewhat differently. Yet I take some satisfaction in the fact that I have had to make only minor changes in this edition to update the original content, while adding a new chapter to broach more fully the developments of the 1990s. In 1998, Madrid's Editorial Coli-bri published the updated book in Spanish. For me, Cuba has never been an emotionally neutral topic. I repeat what I expressed in the first preface: this work is more than a scholarly endeavor; it is a charge from the heart. Readers should know the wellspring of my voice: from the early 1970s until the late 1980s, I supported the Cuban Revolution.

User review
Unbelievable!
I've read through many of the reviews on this site, both positive and negative. The main point is that if you are a beginner to ASP.NET, C#, or both then this book is NOT for you. However, if you have some experience with ASP.NET and C#.NET and would like to learn more about an N-Tier approach (essentially programming in .NET the RIGHT way) then this book is a MUST. I can't understand why anyone would give this book less than a 5 star rating that meet the authors' intended audience criteria (which, by the way, is stated in the book). I have read the book cover to cover several times and constantly use it as a resource. The book is a series of examples leading up to one project, but I don't think the authors' main intentions were for us to try and build ThePhile.com. From this book I took away the understanding of how to build a scalable, portable, professional Web site having 100% control over it.

If you build web sites with ASP.NET as a novice or hobbyist and want to get to the next level, this book is for you! I own both the VB.NET and C#.NET versions and I highly recommend either one.

Outstanding ASP.NET Case Study
ASP.NET Website Programming: Problem - Design - Solution, C# Edition by Marco Bellinaso & Kevin Hoffman is one of the most USABLE books I have seen. I stress the word USABLE because most books are either reference manuals or just teaching tools. Either one need is hit upon or the other, whereas with this book you get to have your cake and eat it too!

The whole design of this book revolves around designing a web site from the ground up, all using ASP.NET with C# as the programming language of choice. The authors assume that you begin with nothing and you need to have all the parts of your web site hit upon to get this up and running for corporate or personal use. Since .NET is still a very new tool, this book is a very helpful resource to have for any and all web developers.

The Authors break the book up into the following parts:

Design of the overall layout, database, look and feel

Setting up basic foundations like CSS, navigation, etc

Editing and viewing all files that make up the site hierarchy

A look at managing news (information displayed to the user)

How advertising can be set up to bring in revenue

Creating and displaying polls on your site

Working with Mailing Lists

Managing a Forum

Deploying the site to the world

A discussion of different data stores that can be used

The writing in this book is very clear-cut and easy to follow. Using the code supplied in this book, the user can modify as they see fit and get their own site up and running in no time.

As an ASP.NET case study, this is the best book that I have seen to follow a site from birth to adulthood. This is a fantastic book for all C#, ASP.NET, web developers and it's a great addition to your current staple of related programming books.

***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

A reference book for developing a commercial web site
I did not like the layout of the matiral, a bit clombsy but as a refernce book for finding out how to develop a commercial web site it sure does the work.

User review
Great book,,. but definitely not for beginners
This book is supposed to be used by intermediate-to-experienced .NET programmers. If you have known almost everything about .NET and had some experience developing real-life web application, you see this book worth reading.

It covers a lot of matters in developing a typical ASP.NET web site. The book goes from module to module, and in each module the approach is problem-design-solution. I dont think I saw much use of design patterns, which is something I desparately want to know how to apply, but the design is generally good and specific to ASP.NET. In other words, it takes advantage of ASP.NET in terms of event models, code behind, custom controls, configuration settings, and ADO.NET of course,,. About using ADO.NET, it is not just simply and directly binding database to DataGrid, DataList. Instead, the authors did a good job in deciding where to use ADO.NET features and where to use object-oriented features.

The book also covers data modeling to the level of stored procedure, triggers, relationships, transactions,,. This makes the development process look more professional and integrated.

Though there existed some bugs in the code and the book itself takes time and hard to read, i strongly recommend this book to any one who pursues a real good career in .NET.

User review
This book has got me writing a lot of code
This is definitely one of my favorite books. I've read it cover to cover and I'm constantly going back to use the examples as patterns for building web sites and modules. This is an excellent book for intermediate programmers. I read Beginning Visual C# first, and then skipped around through several ASP.NET books. I really can't say enough good things about this book. It's the best programming book I've ever read. If you want to learn how to build solid ASP.NET websites using C#, this is the book you need.

Relationship Enhancement Therapy: Healing Through Deep Empathy and Intimate Dialogue

Relationship Enhancement Therapy: Healing Through Deep Empathy and Intimate Dialogue
Robert F. Scuka | 2005-05-28 00:00:00 | Routledge | 368 | Mental Health
Relationship Enhancement Therapy (RE) is a couples-therapy system conceived of, designed, and first implemented by Bernard Guerney Jr., who integrated the client-centered theory of Carl Rogers, the interpersonal theory of Henry Stack Sullivan, the behavior modification and learning theories of Skinner and Bandura, and the psychodynamic theory of Freud, in formulating RE. In this book Dr. Scuka presents an up-to-date, comprehensive theoretical and practical treatment of RE, in which he gives the reader a guide to implementing the principles of this dynamic theory. The book is written principally with couples therapy in mind, although there is an acknowledged relevance to family therapy, and the author calls attention the many skills and therapy techniques that would be applicable to family therapy. Though designed to allow a therapist of any level of experience to begin working with the RE model, this book is more than a standard cookbook, as it considers a variety of special RE therapy techniques, discusses the entire clinical intake process, the application of the RE model to the treatment of affairs, use with difficult clients, and family therapy issues such as domestic violence and stepfamilies.
Reviews
This book is based on the well researched Relationship Enhancement (RE) model, which has roots in Rogerian, behavioral, psychodynamic and interpersonal studies and theories and which was conceived by psychologist Bernard Guerney.

Books for couples' therapists tend to be one of two varieties: lists of "cookbook" interventions with minimal conceptual or research underpinnings or conceptual treatises which are difficult to translate into actual practice.

Rob Scuka's Relationship Enhancement Therapy manages to articulate both rationale and techniques for interventions in a clear and concise manner. Indeed, Scuka has seemed to anticipate almost any eventuality that can transpire in a couples session and provides guidance as to how to handle each effectively. Clinical vignettes are both illustrative and engaging. Perhaps his most useful skill is his ability to draw the reader into the mind of the strategizing therapist.

As a clinical psychologist and couples therapist with over 20 years experience, I have never found a more useful guide than this.

Reviews
I owned Relationship Enhancement Therapy over a month prior to attending my first RE Therapist's Training conducted by Dr. Scuka. The training is exceptional, and certainly served to reinforce what I had already garnered from his book. Scuka's book presents a review of evaluative research on RE substantiating its effectiveness, and challenges some current arguments questioning the value of communication/conflict skills training in therapy. His work detailing RE applications in cases of domestic violence provides a very thorough and well balanced discussion for assessing the best interests of victims within a couples' intervention model. I found the book to be both very cogent in presenting the RE Therapy Model and very illustrative in its clinical applications, which should be of value for both the novice or experienced clinician. He presents excellent case studies to guide the reader, and tackles in a single chapter what for most clinicians is one of the most complicating of couple traumas, infidelity. Dr. Scuka's writing style and his efforts throughout his multiple case studies, to open his own self-dialogue to the reader, afforded me ample opportunity to feel as if I were in his clinical office working to apply RE right along with him and his clients.
Reviews
An excellent resource book for the mental health practitioner new to Relationship Enhancement Therapy or someone who has had training and needs a refresher or guide. Dr. Scuka presents a thorough, practical, and comprehensive explanation of how to conduct Relationship Enhancement Therapy with chapters describing the underlying philosophy, theory and evidence. Clinical vignettes are also included which bring the material alive.
Reviews
This is a good book for those who are famililar with RE and can use it as an excellent reference. For those wanting to learn RE with couples, take one of Scuka's excellent classes first. This is not an introductory work.

Essential Cell Biology: A Practical Approach Volume 2: Cell Function (Practical Approach Series, 262, etc.)

Essential Cell Biology: A Practical Approach Volume 2: Cell Function (Practical Approach Series, 262, etc.)
John Davey,J. Michael Lord | 2003-08-28 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 256 | Cell Biology
Biological and medical research relies upon an integrated understanding of the molecules within cells and of the interactions between cells. This has imposed great demands on investigators. Being an expert in a relatively narrow area is no longer sufficient as many studies now require the use of a wide range of techniques to provide the necessary integration. A lack of familiarity with the experimental possibilities can make such diversification difficult to achieve. This two volume set of Essential Cell Biology is designed to help researchers overcome these problems. It has not been possible to include all of the techniques available in cell biology so the challenge was to identify those that might be most relevant to researchers who are new to this topic. We have tried to cover both traditional and more recent approaches. The theory and basic principles of each technique are described, together with detailed protocols and advice for trouble shooting. Directions to more specialised techniques are also included. We hope the result inspires readers to experience the challenges and rewards of cell biology research for themselves and to contribute to the ongoing task of understanding the life of the cell. Essential Cell Biology volume 2 concentrates on understanding how the cell functions whilst Volume 1 focuses on techniques for studying cell structure. Volume 2 details the essential background information and protocols for investigating cell cell function, including, for example, investigations of cellular transport, receptors and gene expression. This is the essential guide to cell biology for researchers new to the field.

Public Space and the Ideology of Place in American Culture. (Architecture Technology Culture)

Public Space and the Ideology of Place in American Culture. (Architecture Technology Culture)
Miles Orvell,Jeffrey L. Meikle | 2009-05-05 00:00:00 | Rodopi | 464 | Architecture
We typically take public space for granted, as if it has continuously been there, yet public space has always been the expression of the will of some agency (person or institution) who names the space, gives it purpose, and monitors its existence. And often its use has been contested. These new essays, written for this volume, approach public space through several key questions: Who has the right to define public space? How do such places generate and sustain symbolic meaning? Is public space unchanging, or is it subject to our subjective perception? Do we, given the public nature of public space, have the right to subvert it? These eighteen essays, including several case studies, offer convincing evidence of a spatial turn in American studies. They argue for a re-visioning of American culture as a history of place-making and the instantiation of meaning in structures, boundaries, and spatial configurations. Chronologically the subjects range from Pierre L'Enfant's initial majestic conceptualization of Washington, D.C. to the post-modern realization that public space in the U.S. is increasingly a matter of waste. Topics range from parks to cities to small towns, from open-air museums to airports, encompassing the commercial marketing of place as well as the subversion and re-possession of public space by the disenfranchised. Ultimately, public space is variously imagined as the site of social and political contestation and of aesthetic change.

PCs: The Missing Manual Review
PCs: The Missing Manual is written by Andy Rathbone, one of the greatest computer book writer. For me he is. You know what Andy Rathbone, you are right. You should come with that book a long time ago. I was bad at troubleshooting computers. Since I bought that book, I know how to speed up my computer, remove viruses and many other threats. There is another tricks that remained unknown to me: Disk Defragmenter. After I knew how to run the Disk Defragmenter, my computer become as fast as Sonic. I did not finish reading that book yet, but if I finish reading that book, I will be a good computer technician or even a good computer engineer.

Not only tells all, but in user-friendly language
Andy Rathbone's PES: The Missing Manual is another recommended winner, again helping bridge the gap between program and learner with a book which moves quickly from the basics to more advanced computer concepts - all linked to user needs. With its surveys of how software and hardware interact to how to tweak either for maximum performance, and how to troubleshoot common problems including spyware and Internet viruses, PES: The Missing Manual not only tells all, but in user-friendly language.

User review
`Missing Manual` by Andy Rathbone
This is THE book for the novice pc user or even the more experienced user, the Missing Manual truly should have been in the box when your new PC was brought to your door!It covers every subject from setting up your PC to connecting your favorite printer, digital camera, webcam, also, how to connect to the internet, surf the web, set-up e-mail, and so much more.

For the more advanced PC user, in the back of the book,The electronic reference library for programmers and IT professionals.

There is still more to be offered in this book, several useful and informative websites as you read from chapter to chapter, and finally,`as if there could be more to offer` visit [,,.] for a tidy list of the shareware programs described in this book, ready for you to download.

I highly recommend this book for anyone that wants to be as proficent and up-to-date as they can be with their PC.

User review
Takes a Broad Subject and Does It Well
Once upon a time, computers came with big, thick, intimidating manuals filled with every bit of arcane knowledge the designers thought that the user would need. Nobody ever read them, partly because of their size, but mainly because it was tedious, time-consuming work to sift throught the manual to try to find the answer you actually needed.

Eventually, manufacturers stopped making these massive manuals - instead, they printed up short `quick-start guides` to get people started. Unfortunately, these guides served much the same purpose as detour signs do in road construction. They take you just far enough to get you lost and then leave you there with no clue what to do next. Readers end up like drivers: lost, confused, and frustrated.

PCs: The Missing Manual is designed to change that. This book, like each of the other Missing Manuals books, gives users a base of knowledge to build on. Unlike those early computer manuals, the book does it in a way that people can understand and follow, and it doesn't just drop you off in the middle of nowhere. Also unlike the early manuals, it goes beyond the PC itself and covers many popular peripherals and accessories - including scanners, digital cameras, and MP3 players.

When writing a book like this, covering such a broad topic as PCs in general, it's easy to go into information overload. That's something that Rathbone manages to avoid, mainly by offering a lot of content online through O'Reilly's Missing CD web site.

The most valuable resources in the book are the troubleshooting guides. Printer troubles, camera problems, even network difficulties are covered and in enough detail that the average user can solve the most common problems quickly and easily. There's also a section covering security and maintenance, including combating spyware and phishing schemes.

PCs: The Missing Manual is basic enough that average computer users can read it and make good use of it. If you are looking for something that will teach you details about modifying and upgrading your system, this isn't the book for you - you'll want to get a different O'Reilly book - Repairing and Upgrading Your PC (review forthcoming).

The EU and the Economies of the Eastern European Enlargement

The EU and the Economies of the Eastern European Enlargement
Alberto Quadrio Curzio,Marco Fortis | 2008-05-29 00:00:00 | Physica-Verlag HD | 202 | Economics

The enlargement of the European Union towards the East from May 2004 has generated an increase of about 100 million inhabitants in the EU population, and has especially brought along major challenges and important opportunities both for the "new" countries and for the "old" member states. That is the main focus of this volume, which is divided into three sections. The first analyses the effects of the enlargement on the functioning of Community institutions, on the relations with the other Eastern European countries, and finally on regional and global economic dynamics; the second section analyses in detail the role of the monetary politics of the European Central Bank and the activities of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development; and the third deals with the importance of the entrepreneurial class in ensuring the success of the transition process of the Eastern European economies.

We chose this book for our weekly lab meetings. While we didn't get to all chapters, we concentrated on ones that would be more useful for our research.

This is an okay text but works better as a simple holder for specific chapters. It would be an excellent book for each chapter but to read the whole book it gets a little redundant at points. I will reference it, I'm sure, but doubt I'll go back to reading the other chapters.

Magic Words That Bring You Riches

Magic Words That Bring You Riches
Ted Nicholas | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Access Publishers Network | 322 | Motivational
Reviews
Hello!

I bought this book back in 1995.

Inside the book is a script that you can use to negotiate the Exclusive Rights to a product.

I did not believe it would work, but I put my ego aside and tried it.

It worked like a charm and for 3 years, I made $80,000 or so a year just selling that one product outside of the basement of my waterfront home.

I have also used other strategies in this book and have encouraged others to do the same.

For example, Ted tells you how to get the best table at any restaurant...Does it work?

You absolutely bet it does. I have done it 5-6 times when it really matters to me and I always get the very best seat in the house.

IF you do what he tells you -- it works.

If you buy it and read it and no nothing...Guess what?

Anyway..it is a light and easy read and it does work.

Best to you,

This book tries perhaps to do too much but

it represents the author's vaules well. You

cannot argue with his success - Ted Nicholas

does mail order that works!

What comes through most of all is his enthusiasm

and eagerness to sweat the details of good

marketing. Nicholas is concerned primarily with

perfecting the headline, the order form, and

the lift letter. If these things are well-done

then the body copy is perhaps not so hard to

do well with his system.

Nicholas is mostly a publisher of how-to information

so this will be of interest to marketers who want

to sell info-products. His examples are directly

pertinent to how you would sell many downloadable

products online.

There is a lot of pithy wisdom here for both copywriters

and direct mail marketers. No book covers all the

bases though. First rate book on direct mail.

I came here to buy this highly recommended book, but was a little surprised at the cost. Since the person who recommended it is someone I admire and trust, I was going to buy it anyway, but then my eye was drawn to the section on the page "Customers interested in Magic Words That Bring You Riches may also be interested in:" Look there, and you'll see an offer to download this book for free. I did it, and sure enough, it's the same book in PDF format, direct from the author's publishing company. Maybe you don't love ebooks, but in any event, how can you beat an offer to see the entire book for free? If you find it worthwhile and want a hard copy, you can return to Amazon.com and buy it! If not, nothing is lost! Also, when reading reviews, beware anyone who says anything is a complete waste of time or money. In my experience, such negative people are not useful to your success. There is clearly much valuable information in this book, and if someone wants to write a negative review worthy of your attention, it should include solid examples so you can draw your own conclusions about the content, rather than simply whether some unknown person "liked" it or not.

This is a must read by anyone in direct sales and marketing industry.

Ted has done amazing things using the written word. Now he shows you how he did it. I have see eBooks like this one being sold on the internet for hundreds of dollars. Compared to those this book is a real bargain. Highly recommended.

The Red Limit: The Search for the Edge of the Universe

The Red Limit: The Search for the Edge of the Universe
Timothy Ferris | 2000-10-20 00:00:00 | New Millennium Audio | 0 | Nonfiction
Hailed by critics as a classic of modern science writing, this is the tumultuous tale of groundbreaking discoveries by a group of scientists whose rivalries and emotions played as important a role as their intellectual brilliance. Awarded the American Institute of Physics Prize, The Red Limit is "an enthralling account....Ferris unfolds the story with skill and suspense uncommon in science writing." (Baltimore Sun)
Reviews
This book is not so much a science book as it is a history of science. Ferris tells the story of the development of the various theories surrounding cosmology the development of the universe. As such he does spend a lot of time talking about theories which were later proved incorrect. Periodically while reading the book I did find myself checking out various things on the internet in order to see what the final result would be.

He covers things like the debates on whether the universe contains one galaxy or many, how the big bang theory was developed, the discoveries of things like cephiad variable stars, the galactic red shift, and background microwave radiation that led to a better understanding of the universe. He also covers some of the great scientific debates, like the one about uncertainty between Einstein and Heisenberg.

I found the book to be very readable and informative. The only reason it's not 5 stars is that it is somewhat dated. However, as it is not really a book about science, but a book about the history of science, its dated nature doesn't detract from its overall narrative. As I mentioned above, anyone wanting to know the modern spin on things which might not have been available when the book was written can simply google things as he reads.
Reviews
A great review of the discovery of the expanding universe; the science is interesting and understandable for the lay person. Even more compelling is the drama of the scientists themselves, there life, personalities, strengths, foibles and their wonderful discoveries. It is science and history of science combined in an easy to read 250 page book that helps us all comprehend just a grasp of the incomprehensable nature of our existence in this universe.

Reviews
The Red Limit is another of Timothy's Ferris excellent distilliations of astrophysics for public consumption. As usual, he is skilled not only in making science concepts comprehensible but bringing into vivid detail the *story* of science -- how we know what we know. It even includes the occasional philosophical discussion.

So why the low rating? Because this book is twenty years old. I had assumed that the reprint would maybe have some updated material, but it doesn't. This is effectively a book on the State of Cosmology circa 1983.

Don't waste your money on this. Ferris's own Whole Shebang is better written and more up to date. You might also check out Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos, which is a very similar book but far better and has been updatee for the most recent discoveries. Bill Bryson's Brief History of Nearly Everything only covers cosmology in basic detail, but is also far more up-to-date.

August 2, 1999

I would like to take a minute to thank Timothy Ferris for abridging, The Red Limit: The Search for the Edge of the Universe, to audio. Shortly after my son was born I began looking for audio novels which would allow me to share my passion of astronomy, physics and astrophysics with my then six month old son, The Red Limit: The Search for the Edge of the Universe, was perfect meeting all the criteria. Timothy Ferris also gets top marks for announciation, his speaking is very clear and easy to understand. It is because of his outstanding work that I decided to purchase his other audio novels, The Whole Shebang and Coming of Age in the Milky Way.

That was 11 months ago. All of Timothy Ferris audio novels turned out to be excellent with a high standard of quality in production. What started off as a casual experiment with audio bedtime stories for my son has now become firmly entrenched as a nightly event. My son now 18 months old, has moved onto the Richard Feyman Physics audio lectures which are also carried by Amazon.

I would like to encourage Timothy Ferris to continue produce more of these types of edutainment audio programs on tape or CD. I love listening to scientific books on my way to work and also love to share them with my 18 month old son as his bedtime stories. In addition to the content, the high level of clear announciation in the Timothy Ferris work is great, it really helps my son to learn new words, concepts and the organization of the english language. More than he would ever obtain in normal everyday speech.

I would love to see the following subjects abrigded to audio for distribution through Amazon.com. Maths, sciences, physics, astrophysics, geology, any and all space related topics, gravity, unified field theory, electromagnetics, electronics, microproccessor design, optics, micro-optics, electro-optics, light and the theory there of, satellites, satellite orbital mechanics and related theory, engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering.

I do not have time in my busy daily schedule to read very much, but do I have five hours a day to listen and learn.

If you make it I will support it.

The Phonology of Catalan (The Phonology of the World's Languages)

The Phonology of Catalan (The Phonology of the World's Languages)
Max W. Wheeler | 2005-11-17 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 400 | Foreign Languages
This is the most comprehensive account of Catalan phonology ever published. Catalan is a Romance language, occupying a position somewhere between French, Spanish, and Italian. It is the first language of six and a half million people in the northeastern Spain and of the peoples of Andorra, French Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and a small region of Sardinia. Dr Wheeler describes Barcelona pronunciation and the major varieties of western Catalonia, Valencia, and Majorca, and considers social and stylistic variation. The author's approach is through a clear, pragmatic version of orthodox Optimality Theory and is informed by close attention to articulatory phonetics. He includes a substantial account of post-lexical (phrasal) phonology and has designed his approach to be of maximum use to those seeking either to understand the phonology and morphology of Catalan and its varieties or to set these within a comparative or typological perspective. After an introduction to the varieties of Catalan the author devotes chapters to segment inventories; syllable structure; phrasal phonology; coda voicing; coda place; cluster reduction; epenthesis; stress and prosody; word phonology and allomorphy; and the syllabification of pronominal clitics. The book is fully referenced and contains a comprehensive bibliography. It is likely to be the standard account of its subject for many years.

The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (Routledge Classics)

The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (Routledge Classics)
Max Weber | 2001-05-23 00:00:00 | Routledge | 320 | Social Sciences
Max Weber's best-known and most controversial work, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, first published in 1904, remains to this day a powerful and fascinating read. Weber's highly accessible style is just one of many reasons for his continuing popularity. The book contends that the Protestant ethic made possible and encouraged the development of capitalism in the West.
Reviews
In Weber's classic work, he connects the Protestant Reformation with the rise in modern-day capitalism - the two, according to Weber, are essentially linked together. The Reformation introduced core elements upon which capitalism is built. For example the idea that the individual has rights associated with responsibility is a fundamental element of the Reformation - no longer is the Catholic Church solely responsible for the spiritual development of an individual, he must be responsible himself...every member a minister concept. Well, that's essential for the promulgation of capitalism as well - it's not the responsibility of the state, it's the reasonability of the individual to make a profit or lose capital in the process. The individual was kept stable and protected under the thumb of the Catholic Church, according to Weber, and the Reformation has freed the individual to take risks and stake their claim in life. Weber also notes that the Catholic Church promoted religious piety, a quiet and subdued worship within the walls of the sanctuary while the Reformation released people to worship with zeal and passion in the fields and through his labors.
Reviews
Max Weber's seminal articles on the spirit (if not the origin) of capitalism, first issued in 1904 and 1905 and then jointly published around 1920, have stirred as much debate as any other sociological texts save Marx. Indeed, this is a work weighted with rep, not all of it deserved. In and of itself, "Protestant Ethic" perhaps does not date undamaged, but it does retain considerable power, conceptually and theoretically if not statistically. Of greatest concern to many readers today, particularly students caught in the web of a professor assigning the text, is the ability of the steward of a given edition to craft a package that can be readily assimilated.

I give you: Talcott Parsons. Not only is Mr. Parsons a gifted translator (for this is a work which has frequently lost much in translation), he also has the presence of mind to give over the introduction to an equally gifted Weberian scholar. Mr. Anthony Giddens beautifully sets the table for the main course, the taste of which is much more pleasant (and identifiable) in the light of his prefacing. Now, scholars may wage wars over whether he sets the table correctly, but that's a debate for another forum. For our purposes here, this is as well-translated and accessible a package of this work as you're going to find. I certainly grasped it, well and enjoyably. And if I can, lord knows anyone can!
Reviews
Max Weber contends that the spirit of capitalism is not greed and consumption, but the creation of order and the best use of resources. He further discovered that in his country (Germany), Protestants tend to be wealthier and better educated than the Catholics because Protestants showed a special tendency to develop "economic rationalism"; that is, a particular approach to creating wealth that was less focused on the gain of comfort than on the pursuit of profit itself. The general outlook on life and work that the early protestants sects drew from their belief made them singularly well adapted to modern capitalism. They brought to it: (1). A desire for progress; (2). A love of hard work for its own sake; (3). Orderliness, punctuality and honesty; (4). Belief in a calling on proving one's faith in worldly activity; etc. In sum, Weber showed how character traits, strongly shaped by religion, could play a massive role in the creation of wealth.
Reviews
When feudalism broke down in the Late Middle Ages, Weber argues, the capitalism that emerged in its place was an entirely new ethos, accompanied by a peculiar Puritan ethic that dignified the accumulation of wealth as a sign of divine favor. The "spirit" of capitalism was distinct from the impulse to acquisition, which was nothing new in the 16th century. It was the pursuit of perpetually-renewed profit, for its own sake, above and beyond the satisfaction of traditional human needs. But what was driving this pursuit of perpetual profits? The religious concept of "calling," says Weber, the idea that worldly activity is morally good if it is what God has called us to do. This concept contrasted with earlier Christian renunciation of worldly affairs in favor of monastic contemplation of God.

Just as worldly wealth was a sign of God's favor, poverty became shameful, indicating rejection of God's calling. The unequal distribution of the goods of this world was ordained by God's inscrutable Providence, said Calvinists. Therefore charity became meaningless, in sharp contrast to the teachings of St. Paul, who called it the greatest of virtues. Said John Wesley, "We must exhort all Christians to gain all they can, and to save all they can; that is, in effect, to grow rich." Said Jesus, "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven." Is there a disconnect between Calvinist Protestantism and the teachings of Jesus? You decide.

The socio-economic preconditions for capitalism existed in other parts of the world, argues Weber; why did it arise only in the Protestant West? His thesis has long been controversial, but its relevance to current events makes it worthy of consideration.
Reviews
There are already many good reviews to this book, so I will only suggest reading the following books in addition to Weber's work: 1) "The passions and the interests" by Albert Hirschman; 2) "The mind and the market: capitalism in Western thought" by Jerry Muller; 3) "The Spirit of Capitalism: Nationalism and Economic Growth" by Liah Greenfeld; 4) 4.1. and 4.2: "The world economy. A millennial perspective" (2001) plus "The world economy: Historical Statistics" (2003) by Angus Maddison; 5) "The Churching Of America, 1776-2005: Winners And Losers In Our Religious Economy" by Roger Finke and Rodney Stark ; and 6) "Power and Plenty: Trade, War, and the World Economy in the Second Millennium" by Ronald Findlay and Kevin H. O'Rourke.

Capillary Electrophoresis: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Biology)

Capillary Electrophoresis: Methods and Protocols (Methods in Molecular Biology)
Philippe Schmitt-Kopplin | 2008-02-25 00:00:00 | Humana Press | 832 | Biochemistry

Capillary Electrophoresis: Methods and Protocols presents a selection of current capillary electrophoresis methods used to separate representative types of molecules and particles and in combination with different detection techniques. The volume is intended for beginners in the field and provides overviews of each technique and a starting point for the exploration of the defined literature on the different application topics. As a beginning text, each technique is explained in simple terms, assuming only minimal previous knowledge of the methods. A Notes section accompanies each chapter and addresses problems that may occur and how to overcome them.

In Part I, Analyte-Oriented, contributors present methods and protocols based on sample type and size for inorganic and organic small ions, anionic, cationic, and neutral pollutants and pharmaceuticals, sugars, amino acids, nucleotides and DNA, and synthetic copolymers up to microorganisms. In Part II, Methods-Oriented, authors present the more methodological descriptions of particular and new CE techniques including CZE, MEKC/MECC, CEC, affinity CE, coating and online concentration techniques, single-cell analysis, and multidimensional techniques. Comprehensive and timely, Capillary Electrophoresis: Methods and Protocols is ideal for researchers looking for a beginning text on capillary electrophoresis methods.

Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Control: A Lyapunov-Based Approach

Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Control: A Lyapunov-Based Approach
Wassim M. Haddad | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Princeton University Press | 976 | Control Theory
Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Control presents and develops an extensive treatment of stability analysis and control design of nonlinear dynamical systems, with an emphasis on Lyapunov-based methods. Dynamical system theory lies at the heart of mathematical sciences and engineering. The application of dynamical systems has crossed interdisciplinary boundaries from chemistry to biochemistry to chemical kinetics, from medicine to biology to population genetics, from economics to sociology to psychology, and from physics to mechanics to engineering. The increasingly complex nature of engineering systems requiring feedback control to obtain a desired system behavior also gives rise to dynamical systems.

Wassim Haddad and VijaySekhar Chellaboina provide an exhaustive treatment of nonlinear systems theory and control using the highest standards of exposition and rigor. This graduate-level textbook goes well beyond standard treatments by developing Lyapunov stability theory, partial stability, boundedness, input-to-state stability, input-output stability, finite-time stability, semistability, stability of sets and periodic orbits, and stability theorems via vector Lyapunov functions. A complete and thorough treatment of dissipativity theory, absolute stability theory, stability of feedback systems, optimal control, disturbance rejection control, and robust control for nonlinear dynamical systems is also given. This book is an indispensable resource for applied mathematicians, dynamical systems theorists, control theorists, and engineers.

Why People Die by Suicide

Why People Die by Suicide
By Thomas Joiner

* Publisher: Harvard University Press
* Number Of Pages: 288
* Publication Date: 2007-09-30
* ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0674025490
* ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780674025493

Product Description:

In the wake of a suicide, the most troubling questions are invariably the most difficult to answer: How could we have known? What could we have done? And always, unremittingly: Why? Written by a clinical psychologist whose own life has been touched by suicide, this book offers the clearest account ever given of why some people choose to die.

Drawing on extensive clinical and epidemiological evidence, as well as personal experience, Thomas Joiner brings a comprehensive understanding to seemingly incomprehensible behavior. Among the many people who have considered, attempted, or died by suicide, he finds three factors that mark those most at risk of death: the feeling of being a burden on loved ones; the sense of isolation; and, chillingly, the learned ability to hurt oneself. Joiner tests his theory against diverse facts taken from clinical anecdotes, history, literature, popular culture, anthropology, epidemiology, genetics, and neurobiology--facts about suicide rates among men and women; white and African-American men; anorexics, athletes, prostitutes, and physicians; members of cults, sports fans, and citizens of nations in crisis.

The result is the most coherent and persuasive explanation ever given of why and how people overcome life's strongest instinct, self-preservation. Joiner's is a work that makes sense of the bewildering array of statistics and stories surrounding suicidal behavior; at the same time, it offers insight, guidance, and essential information to clinicians, scientists, and health practitioners, and to anyone whose life has been affected by suicide.

Summary: Great book if you have recently lost a loved one to suicide
Rating: 5

My boyfriend committed suicide four months ago. I have been tormented by almost every single bad human emotions you can think of. I have purchased almost every single books here on amazon regarding suicide. Obviously, I am desperately in need of finding answers to comfort me, to help me cope with the incredible loss.
This book is amazing. It answered almost all my questions.
If you are a suicide survivor who lost a loved one to suicide, I highly recommend this book. It will comfort you and perhaps you can finally let go of the unnecessary guilt.

Summary: Useful contribution
Rating: 4

Quote:
"The result is the most coherent and persuasive explanation ever given of why and how people overcome life's strongest instinct, self-preservation."

Life's strongest instinct is not self-preservation, it is reproduction by inclusive fitness mechanisms. The individual doesn't matter, it's their genes. Very important this fact is understood if a comprehensive understanding of suicide behaviour is to be achieved. Hopefully this will be made clearer in future books.

Nonetheless, a good resource for psychologists and others to gain a deeper understanding of patient risk factors.

Summary: A unique blend of professional detachment and personal passion.
Rating: 5

An insightful exploration of the phenomenon of death by suicide. It will help both those who have been bereaved by suicide, and those who wish to understand why their loved one might be at risk.

Be aware, though, that the book doesn't seek to give you a detailed practical plan for intervention.

Summary: Very thought provoking, took guts to write
Rating: 5

It is an interesting subject to broach, much less write about. I was intrested in his observations and conclusions, and I found it very thought provoking and pretty much as I would have guessed, for the most part. Well written and something that people shy away from talking about, but very necessary, as there are too few who endores euthanasia when we totally accept it in animals, and consider it 'humane'. Why not us?? However, some people are just in a place whereby they cannot go on any longer, for whatever the reasons, and it should not be considered a 'sin' in the least, it should be understood. To me the sin is to call it that.

Summary: A mixed bag
Rating: 3

Much of this book is an apology for a proposed model for suicide which is, at best, a stretch. The early secions are repetitive and and an attempt to summon evidence in support of the model. In many cases, correlations are confused with causality.

The middle section which reviews current evidence on genetics, and neurobioloby is well worth reading.

The last sections which deal with prevention and therapy are weak and
mostly a re-hash of Cognitive-Behavioral therapy tenets.

Overall, I was disappointed.

User review
The best reference for ASP.Net Beginners
Great combination and perfect fit of beginning book and tool: ASP.Net Web Matrix. Excellent examples and basic ASP.Net concepts explanation.

User review
Not bad, good examples
This book is a not bad introduction to ASP.NET. The reason I purchased it is I really needed to master Web Matrix ASAP and Mr. Sussman's book was quite helpful in accomplishing that goal. Of course, it is better to begin with Visual Studio since Web Matrix is somewhat limited resemblance of Visual Studuo but Web Matrix has something nobody could resist - it is free.
Make sure you learn as profoundly as possible chapters about datagrids and reusable content; these two are absolutely irreplaceble components of practically any online database application. Also pay attention to inclusion of namespaces at the very top of your code, it is forgetable. The only thing which was not working for me is Web Services. Other code samples work fine.
I would recommend to start with this book to anybody who needs to master ASP.NET.

User review
A Thorough Introduction to Interactive Websites
I am new to programming.

This book starts at the beginning: building a graphical web page in Web Matrix. Following a entertaining blend of practical, funny and insightful steps, in a short period I was using Visual Basic.Net and databases to add dynamic features, controls and web services.

I was amazed at how easy it is to do. This book provides an enjoyable was to grasp a firm foundation in ASP.NET programming.

User review
The best book I found to start ASP .NET
You will be amazed when you read it. It is a step by step guide. I highly recommend this book for ASP .NET so far.

User review
Absolutely great book for beginners (static to dynamic web)
I am a college student having some programming knowledge but totally new in dynamic/ data-driven web creation. I found this book really helpful to get started from static to exciting data-driven stuff with ASP and MSDE. Although WebMatrix has a limitation(which was developed by a team of people from Microsoft at their spare time), it's a real great tool for beginner to get to know how to install database engine, create a data table, link to your web form with drag-n-drop and some hands-on coding (provided in the book). If you need to go on to industrial level, this book or WebMartix won't help.
Chap 1 starts with step by step instructions on how to install .NET framwork, MSDE (you need this if you don't have SQL running), then WebMartix (which has its own web server, you don't need IIS to run samples from the book). One of the great styles of this book is easy-to-follow-and-understand examples which has `Try It Out` & `How it Works` section which explains the code line by line in detail. I found Chap16 and 17 really helpful for general knowledge on `Web Services` and `Beyond WebMatrix,` but make sure you finish this book first, then go on to more exciting Visual Studio .NET (which is a `bigbrother` of WebMatrix)
Oh,,2 case studies at the back of the book, which explains step by step how to make a guestbook, reconizing customer and `log-on` stuff,,and the CD includes some software WebMatrix, MSDE, etc,,
Thanks to David Sussman and Wrox P2P
