Ancient Letters: Classical and Late Antique Epistolography

Ancient Letters: Classical and Late Antique Epistolography
Ruth Morello,A. D. Morrison | 2007-07-26 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 350 | Classics
The surviving body of ancient letters offers the reader a stunning variety of material, ranging from the everyday letters preserved among the Oxyrhynchus papyri to imperial rescripts, New Testament Epistles, fictional or pseudepigraphical letters and a wealth of missives on almost every conceivable subject. They offer us a unique insight into ancient practices in the fields of politics, literature, philosophy, medicine and many other areas. This collection presents a series of case studies in ancient letters, asking how each letter writer manipulates the epistolary tradition, why he chose the letter form over any other, and what effect the publication of volumes of collected letters might have had upon a reader's engagement with epistolary works. This volume is the first of its kind on ancient letters in any language, and it brings together both well-established and promising young scholars currently working in the fields of ancient literature, history, philosophy and medicine to engage in a shared debate about this most adaptable and 'interdisciplinary' of genres.

Stuck in Neutral

Stuck in Neutral
Cathie Jo Martin | 1999-11-08 00:00:00 | Princeton Univ Pr | 264 | Economics
According to conventional wisdom, big business wields enormous influence over America's political agenda and is responsible for the relatively limited scale of the country's social policies. In Stuck in Neutral, however, Cathie Jo Martin challenges that view, arguing that big business has limited involvement in social policy and in many instances desires broader social interventions.

Combining hundreds of in-depth interviews with careful quantitative analysis, Martin shows that there is strong support among managers for government-sponsored training, health, work, and family initiatives to enhance workers' skills and productivity. This support does not translate into political action, surprisingly, because big firms are not organized to intervene effectively. Every large company has its own staff to deal with government affairs, but overarching organizations for the most part lobby ineffectively for the collective interests of big business in the social realm. By contrast, small firms, which cannot afford to lobby the government directly, rely on representative associations to speak for them. The unified voice of small business comes through much more clearly in policy circles than the diverse messages presented by individual corporations, ensuring that the small-business agenda of limited social policy prevails.

A vivid portrayal of the interplay between business and politics, Stuck in Neutral offers a fresh take on some of the most controversial issues of our day. It is a must read for anyone interested in the past, present, and future of the American welfare state and political economy.

I thought this book was a great way to show kids our age how hard it was to live in the situation that he was. I recomend that all students should read this book if look down on other people.

I thought this book is awesome a very entertaining! I kept interested in the events and the plot. A sumary of the book is about a boy, Shawn, with crebral pralsie and he thinks his father is trying to kill him. He trys to figure out if his father really wants to "end his pain". Shawn knows that if his father doea try to kill him his brother and sister will do their best to try and protect him. I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars because it catches your attention and keeps you interested.

I thought this book was okay. It was very interesting trying to figure out if Shawn's dad was really going to kill him or not. But I didn't think that it was a book that most teenagers would like to read. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes adventure and a little mystery

Das Unendliche: Mathematiker ringen um einen Begriff [GERMAN]
Rudolf Taschner | 2005-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 141 | Mathematics

Anatomy of a Typeface

Anatomy of a Typeface
Alexander Lawson | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Hamish Hamilton Ltd | 432 | Graphic Design
Reviews
I bought this because I was told it was one of the three best books for studying typography (the others being "The Elements of Typographic Style" and "Letters of Credit"). Based on the title, I was hoping this would give me a better sense of the visual/technical vocabulary and structure of typefaces in general. Instead it is basically a history of the important type faces and designers, tracing the reasons why different styles moved in and out of fashion/use as printing technology and publishing in general progressed. I found it very dry, and less useful than the other two books, but I can see where any designer should have at least a passing understanding of the content of this book. I just think it should have a different title. "Letters of Credit" talks more about the "anatomy" of typefaces, so I might recommend starting there.
Reviews
While this is not a bad book, I don't think it deserves the five-star reviews it got above.

Each chapter is an article (or perhaps adapted from an article) originally for a magazine called Printing Impressions. As a result they stand alone better than they fit together: some stories are duplicated or unnecessarily scattered over several chapters, while others seem more compressed than they had to be (such as his discussions of sans-serif typefaces.) The type samples are good, often original, which is wonderful for history (but will be a disappointment if you wanted side-by-side comparisons.)

The discussion of the workshop process of making metal type is tantalising but not all that helpful to understanding. And while it has pretty old engravings, they aren't labled or explained to help distinguish essential parts from workshop quirks.

I'd certainly recommend reading Robert Bringhurst's Elements of Typographic Style first. I've not yet read James Felici's Complete Manual of Typography but people say good things. From browsing it seems to be more specific than Bringhurst, with more focus on technology, and less on timelessness. (It's hard to tell but I doubt it has his wonderful prose.)
Reviews
Lawson has created a wonderful, readable historical account. The first 30 chapters each present one typeface ('font' for computer folk). A typeface's chapter analyzes the structural features of the sorts ('glyphs'), noting how the typeface fits into the usual bins labelled 'black letter', or 'modern', etc. That discussion tends to be spotty, though, and the successful reader already knows a few different ways for serifs to differ from each other, for line weight to vary, and lots more.

What this book does well is present specimens of different typefaces within each family, showing how the letterforms drifted through time, or how they evolved to meet specific demands of paper, ink, and press. The typefaces are arranged in a chronological order, of sorts, but one type face's era may overlap another a large margin. Within each chapter, Lawson explores the development of that typeface, from the calligraphy and earlier letterforms that preceded it up through its contemporary appearance and use. The many examples also show the relationships between members of the same evolutionary tree. A few times, though, the samples could have been bigger, e.g. for pointing out differences in bracketing of the serifs.

This is very much a history of the type designers, printers, and other people in the history of type. It also gives some history of printing and typefounding technology. That motivates discussions of typefaces that were created to solve specific problems of paper, ink, and press, as well as esthetics. Historical information about punchcutting technology and modern type creation tools also explains the changing business relationships between font designers, distributors, and users.

Knowledge of history may help the reader in speccing type appropriate to some printing task, but there's very little here that would help in setting up a page of text. It's a book for another purpose, though. It's about the typefaces that are (or should be, or should not be) important to today's typographers, and why.

Reviews
A friend told me about this great book. It is possibly the best book about type and type designers that I have. Alexander Lawson does a superb job telling the history of the designers and the type faces back to the beginning. Excellent illustrated examples of the type faces. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in type and letterforms.
Reviews
Although called "Anatomy of a Typeface," this book actually takes about 20 classic typefaces and analyzes each, discussing its designer, history, and aesthetics in depth. This is an outstandingly thoughtful and well-researched book by a master in the field, potentially of use both to someone with a basic understanding of the topic and to an expert

Information Rules: A Strategic Guide to the Network Economy

Information Rules: A Strategic Guide to the Network Economy
Carl Shapiro,Hal R. Varian | 1998-11-19 00:00:00 | Harvard Business Press | 352 | MIS
In a marketplace that depends so thoroughly on cutting-edge information technology, can classic economic principles still offer any real strategic value? Yes! say Carl Shapiro and Hal Varian. In Information Rules, they reveal that many conventional economic concepts can provide the insight and understanding necessary to succeed in the information age. Shapiro and Varian argue that if managers seriously want to develop effective strategies for competing in the new economy, they must understand the fundamental economics of information technology. Whether information takes the form of software code or recorded music, is published in a book or magazine, or even posted on a website, managers must know how to evaluate the consequences of pricing, protecting, and planning new versions of information products, services, and systems. The first book to distill the economics of information and networks into practical business strategies, Information Rules is a guide to the winning moves that can help business leaders-from writers, lawyers, and finance professionals to executives in the entertainment, publishing, and hardware and software industries--navigate successfully through the information economy.
Chapter 1 of Information Rules begins with a description of the change brought on by technology at the close of the century--but the century described is not this one, it's the late 1800s. One hundred years ago, it was an emerging telephone and electrical network that was transforming business. Today it's the Internet. The point? While the circumstances of a particular era may be unique, the underlying principles that describe the exchange of goods in a free-market economy are the same. And the authors, Carl Shapiro and Hal Varian, should know. Shapiro is Professor of Business Strategy at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and has also served as chief economist at the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department. Varian is the Dean of the School of Information Management and Systems at UC Berkeley. Together they offer a deep knowledge of how economic systems work coupled with first-hand experience of today's network economy. They write:
Sure, today's business world is different in a myriad of ways from that of a century ago. But many of today's managers are so focused on the trees of technological change that they fail to see the forest: the underlying economic forces that determine success and failure.
Shapiro and Varian go to great lengths to purge this book of the technobabble and forecasting of an electronic woo-woo land that's typical in books of this genre. Instead, with their feet on the ground, they consider how to market and distribute goods in the network economy, citing examples from industries as diverse as airlines, software, entertainment, and communications. The authors cover issues such as pricing, intellectual property, versioning, lock-in, compatibility, and standards. Clearly written and presented, Information Rules belongs on the bookshelf of anyone who has an interest in today's network economy--entrepreneurs, managers, investors, students. If there was ever a textbook written on how to do business in the information age, this book is it. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

When I bought this book I really expected it was addressed to a very specific professional area, like Computer Scientists or Economists, or even MBA students. I was completly wrong. In fact, this well-written book clarifies many thinks about the important value of information, concepts, relationshipments and additionally rich samples. Consequently, we start to have a better comprehention about several business involved with "Information" (I mean: nowadays, everything, every commercial and non-commercion relationshipment). It is 100% recommmended, no matter what is your work or your dedicated area of studying. Information really rules...

Information Rules: a strategic guide to the network economy (MONGI SIMELANE)

As a student majoring in MIS (Management Information Systems) I highly recommend that Information Rules: a strategic guide to the network economy by Carl Shapiro and Hal Varian is a good investment which, in my opinion is timeless. Timeless to the extent that it is exploring the culture of this new emerging phase in information technology and firms that are involved within it. At first I was quite sceptical to whether or not the trends and fore-seen issues with the growing technology age would be relevant and of course there were things mentioned that I didn't agree with, but for the most part most of what was written was relevant.

One aspect of the book which I particularly enjoyed were the recommendations for business strategies which firm could adopt. Product differentiation, consumer satisfaction (which leads to consumer loyalty), networking (which could be compared to blogs or viral marketing nowadays) and finally the support and convenience of the product/service, is what we see around us that make a clear distinction between the companies that are successful and those that are not. So therefore many firms that are well known today use some of these strategies in order to not only improve consumer satisfaction but to also gain new consumers in the process.

This just makes it seem as if this book's authors have done a lot of research in order to develop future trends and study aspects of the economy that may indeed change. So from the beginning of the first chapter Carl Shapiro and Hal Varian captivated my curiosity by mentioning the fact that this trend of the world getting "smaller: is one that was noted during the industrial revolutions, the emerging in infrastructure of electricity and telephone networks. This was all a growing trend that seems to have no end.

I highly enjoyed this book, a bit difficult to read at times but it is definitely a good buy.

Reviews
This book is the basis for so much that we already know - or should know. Re-reading it this year (2008) after so long was a shock to my senses. It showed me how on target the economic principles expressed between the covers were.

Of course, that is one of the points of the book: old economic principles still hold in "new" economies. The strategies of the most successful firms today can be held up against the principles of this book as a standard - and they will be in synch.

If you've never read it, I highly recommend it - especially if you are in or planning to enter the tech economy. Do not be fooled by some of the "dated" material, since some time has obviously passed since its first publication. There are comments about technological developments held in suspense for the authors at that time - the outcome of which we are already well aware. For example, the authors make much of Netscape's stardom of that time. Now, of course, it is a different story. Regardless, such examples do not diminish the fundamental economics lesson in this book.
Reviews
"Information Rules" is easy and very intersting to read.

I recommend it to people who are interested in internet and it's information flows.
Reviews
This book is a brilliant analysis of the information economy. If more business leaders would have picked it up in 1998 when it was published a lot less money would have been invested in internet business schemes that did not work!

HTML Goodies (2nd Edition)

HTML Goodies (2nd Edition)
Joe Burns | 2001-10-19 00:00:00 | Que | 624 | Networking

HTML Goodies, Second Edition is based on the most popular tutorials at HTMLGoodies.com. It starts with a series of short primers teaching the basics of building Web pages, then continues with detailed tutorials covering

  • Linking
  • Adding images
  • Using Tables and Frames
  • Working with Style Sheets

Later chapters move beyond HTML, demonstrating how to add sound or video, JavaScript and CGI programming to Web pages. The book finishes with a series of useful appendices you can refer to for quick reference.

HTML Goodies deserves a place in the ranks of the best Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) books on the market. Not only does Author Joe Burns teach readers how to use HTML (and in such a wonderfully friendly way), he also explains how to create stylish, efficient Web documents that will keep surfers coming back.

Burns has structured the book into a series of brief tutorials, each of which tackles a particular technical challenge that might confront a Webmaster. One chapter explains image maps, another goes into depth on frames, while others explain Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and Java applets. The tutorials consist of a series of experiments--this code yields this result--interspersed with questions and answers. Where it's appropriate, Burns suggests techniques he's found effective in a variety of situations. You'll be astounded by what you can learn from his advice.

HTML Goodies sprang from Burns's Web site of the same name, a popular one with lots of tutorials and downloadable freebies. It features discussions about Web page development, and Burns is always a frequent contributor. The site does a superb job of standing in for the CD-ROM that this book lacks--the site's a better deal, since it's more current and allows interactivity. --David Wall

I ordered this book for a online course that I am taking. The tips, and codes are good, and the author knows his stuff. It just needs to be brought into the Window's XP, Vista, and 7 age. It stills talks Windows 98. I would recommend this book if learning for the first time about creating Web Pages. You always need some HTML.

Now the best part of the book is this, it takes away the frustration of learning something as alien as html. Trust me on this. As a newbie, is either you find some book like htmgoodies that not only teaches you the jargons and simplify your life by gving you a good dose of laughter or you will end up giving up your dreams of learning html by reading all those too-know-it-all,cramped up information on the net or in some books.

I will recomend htmlgoodies anytime, anywhere. Besides, since am already into this, l mean writing this review, l would like to use this opporturnity to ask Joe Burns which of mad house he escaped from since l will like to be his fans. Am just dying of curiosity. Jesus, that's some book

    Getting Things Done
    David Allen | 2002-01-01 00:00:00 | Penguin | 267 | Health and Care
With first-chapter allusions to martial arts, "flow," "mind like water," and other concepts borrowed from the East (and usually mangled), you'd almost think this self-helper from David Allen should have been called Zen and the Art of Schedule Maintenance.

As whole-life-organizing systems go, Allen's is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk, The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket"

That's where the processing and prioritizing begin; in Allen's system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen's ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It's commonsense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment; Allen excels at dispensing such wisdom in this useful, if somewhat belabored, self-improver aimed at everyone from CEOs to soccer moms (who we all know are more organized than most CEOs to start with).

    Theoretical Foundations of Corporate Finance.

    Theoretical Foundations of Corporate Finance.
    Joao Amaro de Matos | 2001-12-01 00:00:00 | Princeton University Press | 320 | Economics
Corporate finance is the area of finance that studies the determinants of firms' values, including capital structure, financing, and investment decisions. Although there are several excellent texts in corporate finance, this is the first to focus on the theoretical foundations of the subject in a consistent and integrated way at the Ph.D. level. In addition to a textbook for advanced graduate students, it can also serve as a general reference to researchers and sophisticated practitioners.

The material presented is carefully selected with an eye to what is essential to understanding the underlying theory, ensuring that this text will remain useful for years to come. The book is divided into three parts. The first section presents the basic principles of valuation based on the absence of arbitrage, including a discussion of the determinants of the optimal capital structure based on the seminal results of Modigliani and Miller. The second section discusses the implications of agency problems and information asymmetries to capital structure, giving particular attention to payout policy and to debt contract design. The concluding portion presents different ways of restructuring capital, including going public, going private using stock repurchases or leveraged buyouts, and mergers and acquisitions. Each chapter includes exercises that vary in difficulty, with suggested solutions provided in an appendix.

This book will assuredly be the standard doctoral- and professional-level explication of corporate finance theory and its appropriate applications.
    Reviews
This book is intended for doctoral students, and is one of the better books on the topic. Although admittedly there are only a few books in this category, the advance treatment of the relevant concepts (capital structure, dividend policy, etc.) are done with clarity. You would need a solid background in corporate finance before you are able to tackle this book. On the other hand, the mathematics is not too difficult.

Most academics and certainly most sustainability managers agree that research on the "business case" for sustainability has been very inconclusive. In fact many have simply decided that the business case for sustainability is elusive. This book goes further than ever before in trying to be more specific about the economic rationale for corporate sustainability, by approaching this issue on an industry-specific level. To do this, empirical evidence was gathered from managers in nine industries, along with their stakeholders, during an extensive and ambitious research project. The book gives a detailed and representative insight of the business case in the nine sectors but also a unique cross-industry perspective on this issue.

    Stephen J. McNamee | 2009-07-16 00:00:00 | Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc. | 296 | Social Sciences
The Meritocracy Myth challenges the widely held American belief in meritocracy_that people get out of the system what they put into it based on individual merit. Fully revised and updated throughout, the second edition includes compelling new case studies, such as the impact of social and cultural capital in the cases of George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and new material on current topics such as the impact of the financial and credit crisis, intergenerational mobility, and the impact of racism and sexism.

    An Introduction to Wavelet Analysis

    An Introduction to Wavelet Analysis
    David F. Walnut | 2004-01-01 00:00:00 | Birkhauser Boston; 1 edition | 472 | Mathematics
"D. Walnut's lovely book aims at the upper undergraduate level, and so it includes relatively more preliminary material . . . than is typically the case in a graduate text. It goes from Haar systems to multiresolutions, and then the discrete wavelet transform . . . The applications to image compression are wonderful, and the best I have seen in books at this level. I also found the analysis of the best choice of basis, and wavelet packet, especially attractive. The later chapters include MATLAB codes. Highly recommended!"

    -Bulletin of the AMS

An Introduction to Wavelet Analysis provides a comprehensive presentation of the conceptual basis of wavelet analysis, including the construction and application of wavelet bases.

The book develops the basic theory of wavelet bases and transforms without assuming any knowledge of Lebesgue integration or the theory of abstract Hilbert spaces. The book elucidates the central ideas of wavelet theory by offering a detailed exposition of the Haar series, and then shows how a more abstract approach allows one to generalize and improve upon the Haar series. Once these ideas have been established and explored, variations and extensions of Haar construction are presented. The mathematical prerequisites for the book are a course in advanced calculus, familiarity with the language of formal mathematical proofs, and basic linear algebra concepts.

    Features:

    * Rigorous proofs with consistent assumptions about the mathematical background of the reader (does not assume familiarity with Hilbert spaces or Lebesgue measure).

    * Complete background material on is offered on Fourier analysis topics.

    * Wavelets are presented first on the continuous domain and later restricted to the discrete domain for improved motivation and understanding of discrete wavelet transforms and applications.

    * Special appendix, "Excursions in Wavelet Theory, " provides a guide to current literature on the topic.

    * Over 170 exercises guide the reader through the text.

An Introduction to Wavelet Analysis is an ideal text/reference for a broad audience of advanced students and researchers in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, computational science, and physical sciences. It is also suitable as a self-study reference guide for professionals.

Summary: From Fourier to wavelets to applications.
    Rating: 5

I take it as a healthy sign when there is a burst of new books in a sub-area of math. In wavelet analysis and its applications, we have seen a number of recent books arrive to university bookstores. Surprisingly there doesn't in fact seem to be much of an overlap of subject or scope, from one book to the next. The subject is infinite in many directions, for example the kind of student it is aimed at, the level, the specialized area within math itself, and the kind of application it is stressing. D. Walnut's lovely book aims at the upper undergraduate level, and so it includes relatively more preliminary material, for example Fourier series, than is typically the case in a graduate text. It goes from Haar systems to multirelutions, and then the discrete wavelet transform, starting on page 215. The applications to image compression are wonderful, and the best I have seen in books at this level. I also found the analysis of the best choice of basis, and wavelet packet, especially attractive. The later chapters include MATLAB codes.-- Highly recommended!

    Apache Cookbook

    Apache Cookbook
    | 2003-11-01 00:00:00 | | 254 | Apache

The Apache Cookbook is a collection of problems, solutions, and practical examples for webmasters, web administrators, programmers, and everyone else who works with Apache. For every problem addressed in the book, there's a worked-out solution or `recipe`-- short, focused pieces of code that you can use immediately. But this book offers more than cut-and-paste code. You also get explanations of how and why the code works, so you can adapt the problem-solving techniques to similar situations. The recipes in the Apache Cookbook range from simple tasks, such installing the server on Red Hat Linux or Windows, to more complex tasks, such as setting up name-based virtual hosts or securing and managing your proxy server. The impressive collection of useful code in this book is a guaranteed timesaver for all Apache users, from novices to advanced practitioners. Instead of poking around mailing lists, online documentation, and other sources, you can rely on the Apache Cookbook for quick solutions to common problems, and then you can spend your time and energy where it matters most.

    Cooking with Apache
The Apache Cookbook is a must have for anyone considering running their own Apache web server. It covers every major feature of Apache and does so without giving too information to the new user while giving more experienced users the guidance to go off on their own and become Apache power users in their own right.

    User review
    Great Apache Resource
Some of the reviews for 'Apache Cookbook: Solutions and Examples for Apache Administrators' have stated that this book is a little too basic and simple for Apache administrators out in the world, but I would disagree. Apache is a solid technology that has proven it's mettle in the world for many many many years but there aren't a whole lot of books out on the market for it. It is of this reviewers opinion that even if some individuals feel this book is too simplistic that ANY book on the market that covers Apache would have to be pretty poor to get a negative mark. With over 200 tidbits of information that cover the gambit of Installation, Module creation, Logging, Security, Virtual Hosts, Aliases, SSL, Error Handling, Performance, etc. etc. etc. this is a solid text. Unlike other bloated books this one clocks in at under 300 pages and the tidbits are short and to the point. If you are an Apache admin there is definitely something that you can get from this cookbook so get out the bowl, eggs, flour and start cooking!!

    ***** RECOMMENDED

    Great Resource!
Apache Cookbook is a great resource on various best-practice tips and tricks on how to setup and run Apache HTTP server day to day.

    The included HOW-TO recipes are:

    * Extremely practical and relevant

    * Easy to follow and implement

    * Well-explained so that not only do you know what you are doing, but also why you are doing it

    * Neatly categorized and indexed so that they are easy to find when needed

While this book can be very useful to Apache novices, people who would benefit the most from it are the ones who've had some previous exposure to Apache administration and are familiar with the basic concepts behind Apache (configuration files, included programs, modules, directives, sections, and such).

If you are an Apache administrator, this book ought to be on your bookshelf.

    User review
A little too basic for me
Beware that several of the cool sounding recipes you might see in the table of contents are tricks; once you actually turn to the correct page to see how the author has managed to implement something you might have formerly believed to be impossible, you will be greeted only by a placeholder paragraph stating that what you want to do IS in fact impossible. Why on Earth would you waste paper printing this?

The other, less cool, recipes are pretty standard faire, and if you have any experience with Apache whatsoever they will probably not be very useful to you. Complete newcomers however will probably find it somewhat handy, though I'm not sure it's worth the price even for them.

    User review
    Excellent resource for web masters
I read this book about a year ago and recently re-read it. Coar and Bowen provide an excellent pragmatic approach to taking care of common Apache administration tasks. The Apache `recipes` are well organized, and presented with sufficient depth to be understandable for intermedia users.

The tips in the `miscellaneous topics` section and the troubleshooting guidelines are excellent, and will save Apache administrators significant amounts of time and frustration.

    The good:

    * Broad coverage of all tasks that Apache administrators will commonly encounter.

    * Excellent writing style - concise yet sufficiently descriptive.

    * Good organization of topics and very useful book index.

    * Very good coverage of virtual hosts (required in most web hosting environments).

    * Very appropriate `see also` references associated with each recipe.

    The bad:

    * Almost 25% of the book is taken up by installation, loading modules, and logging. These are good topics, but they take up too much of the book in my perspective.

    * No information on the use of mod_python. mod_snake (a dead sourceforge) project is referenced. Blech.

    * No information on co-hosting two versions of PHP (PHP4 and PHP5 on the same server).

Overall, this is a great book. If it had slightly better coverage on mod_python and mod_PHP I would give it five stars for certain.

The Revision Theory of Truth (Bradford Books)

The Revision Theory of Truth (Bradford Books)
    Anil Gupta,Nuel Belnap | 1993-03-18 00:00:00 | The MIT Press | 313 | Philosophy

In this rigorous investigation into the logic of truth Anil Gupta and Nuel Belnap explain how the concept of truth works in both ordinary and pathological contexts. The latter include, for instance, contexts that generate Liar Paradox. Their central claim is that truth is a circular concept. In support of this claim they provide a widely applicable theory (the "revision theory") of circular concepts. Under the revision theory, when truth is seen as circular both its ordinary features and its pathological features fall into a simple understandable pattern.

The Revision Theory of Truth is unique in placing truth in the context of a general theory of definitions. This theory makes sense of arbitrary systems of mutually interdependent concepts, of which circular concepts, such as truth, are but a special case.

Anil Gupta is Professor of Philosophy at Indiana University. Nuel Belnap is Alan Ross Anderson Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh.
    Reviews
or those without a background in formal logic. Gupta and Belnap expand their revision theory of truth, available scattered in various papers and referenced by others, in this book.

The book begins with a relatively straight-forward explanation of why they feel the theory is needed and they provide some layman's explanations for the theory. Most of the remainder of the book will be incomprehensible to those without a good background in formal logic. Belnap and Gupta delve deeply into the theoretical framework of their theory and some of its implications.

Although this book is good for those interested in the theory a reader more interested in the general concepts of truth being pursued within the philosophical community will be better served by borrowing a copy of Kirkham's excellent "Theories of Truth" from a local library. Also recommended are some of Varzi and Casati's papers, notably "True and False: an Exchange", available on-line from their websites.

Good reference for a graduate studying theories of truth and logic; not much use for anyone else.

Just Another Major Crisis?: The United States and Europe Since 2000
    Geir Lundestad | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press | 338 | Non-fiction
In this book some of the world's leading academic experts on American-European relations provide the most up to date presentations of the topic available today. The Iraq War represented a most serious challenge to American-European relations. Some of the contributors argue that NATO, the key of the Atlantic relationship, has been harmed beyond repair. The Cold War is over; America has become more nationalist than it used to be; Europe has become more independent-minded vis-a-vis the United States. Others argue that the war was just another major crisis, like the many crises that had affected NATO even in its golden years during the Cold War. Recently the relationship has already improved a great deal; it is likely to improve even further. The editor attempts to strike a balance between different interpretations.

Adaptive Perspectives on Human-Technology Interaction: Methods and Models for Cognitive Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction

Adaptive Perspectives on Human-Technology Interaction: Methods and Models for Cognitive Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction
    Alex Kirlik | 2006-05-04 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 336 | Web Design
In everyday life, and particularly in the modern workplace, information technology and automation increasingly mediate, augment, and sometimes even interfere with how humans interact with their environment. How to understand and support cognition in human-technology interaction is both a practically and socially relevant problem. The chapters in this volume frame this problem in adaptive terms: How are behavior and cognition adapted, or perhaps ill-adapted, to the demands and opportunities of an environment where interaction is mediated by tools and technology? The authors draw heavily on the work of Egon Brunswik, a pioneer in ecological and cognitive psychology, as well as on modern refinements and extensions of Brunswikian ideas, including Hammond's Social Judgment Theory, Gigerenzer's Ecological Rationality and Anderson's Rational Analysis. Inspired by Brunswik's view of cognition as "coming to terms" with the "casual texture" of the external world, the chapters in this volume provide quantitative and computational models and measures for studying how people come to terms with an increasingly technological ecology, and provide insights for supporting cognition and performance through design, training, and other interventions. The methods, models, and measures presented in this book provide timely and important resources for addressing problems in the rapidly growing field of human-technology interaction. The book will be of interest to researchers, students, and practitioners in human factors, cognitive engineering, human-computer interaction, judgment and decision making, and cognitive science.

Religious Experience Reconsidered: A Building-Block Approach to the Study of Religion and Other Special Things

Religious Experience Reconsidered: A Building-Block Approach to the Study of Religion and Other Special Things
    Ann Taves | 2009-09-28 00:00:00 | Princeton University Press | 240 | Philosophy

The essence of religion was once widely thought to be a unique form of experience that could not be explained in neurological, psychological, or sociological terms. In recent decades scholars have questioned the privileging of the idea of religious experience in the study of religion, an approach that effectively isolated the study of religion from the social and natural sciences. Religious Experience Reconsidered lays out a framework for research into religious phenomena that reclaims experience as a central concept while bridging the divide between religious studies and the sciences.

Ann Taves shifts the focus from "religious experience," conceived as a fixed and stable thing, to an examination of the processes by which people attribute meaning to their experiences. She proposes a new approach that unites the study of religion with fields as diverse as neuroscience, anthropology, sociology, and psychology to better understand how these processes are incorporated into the broader cultural formations we think of as religious or spiritual. Taves addresses a series of key questions: how can we set up studies without obscuring contestations over meaning and value? What is the relationship between experience and consciousness? How can research into consciousness help us access and interpret the experiences of others? Why do people individually or collectively explain their experiences in religious terms? How can we set up studies that allow us to compare experiences across times and cultures?

Religious Experience Reconsidered demonstrates how methods from the sciences can be combined with those from the humanities to advance a naturalistic understanding of the experiences that people deem religious.

    Reviews
As a category of study, religious experience has long been a contentious domain. Ann Taves's recent book, Religious Experience Reconsidered, traces the history of these debates and takes bold steps towards reconciling them.

A focus on experience in religion arose particularly in 19th century culture and philosophy. It was during this time that theorists began to put forth their ideas about the nature and significance of religious experience (and experience more generally). In 1799, the Protestant theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher described religion as a 'feeling of absolute dependence.' This move supported the shift away from religious institutions, doctrines, and practices while highlighting subjectivity and experience as the ultimate arbiters of the person's relationship with God. By the early 20th century, religious experience had been thoroughly integrated as a legitimate category into academic and theological discourse. Rudolf Otto, for instance, found the highest expression of piety in the sense of the mysterium tremendum, describing a feeling "sweeping like a gentle tide, pervading the mind with a tranquil mood of deepest worship...it may burst in sudden eruption up from the depths of the soul with spasms and convulsions, or lead to the strangest excitements, to intoxicated frenzy, to transport, and to ecstasy." He defined religious experience as a 'sui generis' phenomenon "irreducible to any other; and therefore, like every absolutely primary and elementary datum, while it admits of being discussed, it cannot be strictly defined." Many scholars of religion followed this move, essentially setting religious experience aside as an 'irreducible, primary datum.' But, as Taves notes, "...for most scholars, the claim that religion is sui generis is simply another way of saying that religion cannot or should not be explained in anything other than religious terms" (18). This attitude has undoubtedly slowed progress in the understanding of such experiences and prevented the kind of cross-disciplinary work that might shed further light on them. The assertion that religion is a sui generis, irreducible phenomenon has exacerbated the disciplinary turf wars endemic to the modern academy.

In Religious Experience Reconsidered, Taves makes efforts to patch up some of these divisions. In the preface she writes, "This book is devoted to building some usable, albeit imperfect, bridges linking the study of experience in religious studies, the social-psychological study of the mind, and neuroscientific study of the brain" (xiii). A key tool here is the use of attribution theory. Between an experience and subsequent interpretations of that experience lie the dynamic, culturally specific processes of meaning making. In social psychology, attribution theory often refers to the way in which people make use of folk psychology to understand goals, desires, and intentions in human behavior. In short, attribution theory focuses on explanation of causes, especially causes of human behavior. Attribution theory is to human behavior what hermeneutics is to textual analysis.

Wayne Proudfoot and Phillip Shaver comment that "attribution theory would suggest that labelling and interpretation are fundamental to religious experience." According to their notions, religious experience consists in having an experience and attributing religious significance to it. Experience is deemed as religious due to complex factors of attribution and ascription, not because of any quality unique unto itself (e.g. Otto's numinous), though they may seem that way to subjects.

Another noteworthy contribution made in this book is Taves's discussion of 'special things.' Like many contemporary scholars of religion, she believes the division of the sacred and profane to be a once useful heuristic that has been too thoroughly reified. Additionally, the dichotomy of sacred and profane does not work especially well in the study of religion cross culturally. Even if it is a relevant notion in certain contexts specific to the European tradition, it does not 'translate well' to other traditions. Taves believes that "Focusing our attention on 'special things' takes our attention away from 'religion' in the abstract and refocuses it on the component parts or building blocks that can be assembled in various ways to create more complex socio-cultural formations, some of which people characterize as 'religions' or 'spiritualities' or 'paths'" (162). Moreover, by getting away from the sacred/profane dichotomy and grounding discussions in 'special things' and 'things set apart,' religious studies will also move away from the circumscription of religion as a sui generis phenomenon. Whereas sacred/profane language is only useful in the discussion of religion, the notion of 'special things' can apply to all sorts of cultural phenomena that convey a similar 'specialness' but are not otherwise 'religious.' For example, art often has this characteristic as do certain speech practices, sporting events, and military customs.

Taves has concluded that religious experience should not be treated, or studied, as something unique and privileged unto itself. All human experience, religious or otherwise, should be studied by whatever tools, methods, and theories may shed light upon it. It is no longer legitimate to insulate experience from scientific study nor to assign it sui generis status. To set aside religious experience is to handicap the possible understandings scholars may reach. Privileging subjective experience and describing it as a phenomenon knowable only on its own terms is a fallacy. A similar fallacy was committed by those 19th century theorists who asserted that life derives from an élan vital, or some other irreducible essence. The 20th century would bring us a refined understanding of the numerous processes that undergird life: DNA, protein transcription, the Kreb's cycle, and all the rest. The 'problem of life,' it would seem, was no single problem after all. Rather, it was composed of many lesser, more tractable phenomena. Similarly, there is probably no unassailable wall between science and human experience. Decomposing the phenomena and studying the 'building blocks' that make up 'religious experience' will surely permit innovations in our understanding. A more encompassing approach may finally allow a set of bridges to be built between these often divided spheres of human inquiry.

This volume in the NATO Science for Peace and Security Series contains the papers of the Advanced Training Course (ATC) 'Legal Aspects of Combating Terrorism'. The purpose of this course was to support NATO on defence issues related to terrorism and united experts from various disciplines to give participants an understanding of how the various dimensions of the laws and their application fit together. In addition to the lectures that can be found in this book, the course was divided into three modules: the legal response to terrorism in general terms; combating terrorism using lawful means; and harmonizing the Law of Armed Conflict (LAC), national laws and NATO in the fight against terrorism. One of the main questions dealt with in this work is whether, in the face of the new threat, terrorism should still be countered through the ordinary means of criminal law, or whether there should be a significant shift in enforcement methods, including a less multilateral approach to decision-making and an increased use of military force.

    Programming Atlas
    | 2006-10-08 00:00:00 | | 0 | ASP.NET

Learn how to deliver richer, more interactive web experiences to your users using ASP.NET Atlas, Microsoft's new framework for building Ajax-savvy web sites. Web developers of all persuasions have embraced the Ajax suite of technologies (JavaScript, HTTP, XML and more) as a way to implement pages that are faster, livelier and more desktop-like in their behavior. Now Atlas brings the power of Ajax to ASP.NET 2.0 developers with controls, script libraries and server support that delivers engaging results without the pain that writing complex JavaScript can entail. Better yet, Atlas web pages are standards based and even run cross-browser.

`Programming Atlas` is not just another `drag and drop` ASP.NET 2.0 book, but dives into the technologies that make it work. You'll begin with a tour of the technologies most often associated with Ajax, from JavaScript and XMLHttpRequest to JSON and the DOM. With the fundamentals in place, author JavaScript expert Christian Wenz unpacks the Atlas framework and shows you how to put its tools to work. You'll learn to:

Understand the architecture of Atlas and the role played by server conrols, such as ScriptManager and UpdatePanel Use core Atlas controls and extenders to build more interactive pages with text fields that autocomplete, user input that is validated, controls that can be dragged and dropped, and much more Bind, display, and update data without causing the entire page to refresh and use the Atlas web services bridge to consume third-party services beyond the domain of your application Incorporate Microsoft Virtual Earth into an application, use Atlas with Web Parts, and create a Windows Live Gadget Use Atlas with PHP and explore othernon-Microsoft Ajax tools for ASP.NET

    User review
    Good But Outdated
This book is outdated. Being fair it is 3 years old, covering a technology that seems to change significantly almost every 3 months. The author has an updated book on the subject -`Programming ASP.NET AJAX: Build rich, Web 2.0-style UI with ASP.NET AJAX`

Microsoft doesn't even use the term Atlas anymore, preferring Ajax like the rest of the industry. The book is so far out of date it has a major chapter on installing the Ajax toolkit with Visual Studio 2005. We now have Visual Studio 2008 and Ajax toolkit comes install with the program.

The parts of the book that explains AJAX, its background are still useful and reading this book would still impart information that would be relevant today. Still, forgo this book and get the updated book - `Programming ASP.NET AJAX: Build rich, Web 2.0-style UI with ASP.NET AJAX`

    User review
OK, but could have had more info on UpdatePanel
I found this book to be OK as an introduction, but not very deep on the UpdatePanel, which is one of the core components for Microsoft's AJAX solution. Also, the book is based on the earlier Atlas CTPs, and the newer [,,.] Betas have drastically changed some things. Worthwhile, but I'm not finding it a reference that I have by my side all the time. Probably should be updated when GA comes out.

With these basics in hand programmers will find Atlas a snap to master - thanks to PROGRAMMING ATLAS.
If you're not already using Microsoft's new framework for building Ajax-savvy web sites, you should be - and PROGRAMMING ATLAS is the perfect vehicle to take you there. It may look like a 'cookbook' of recipes, but it's not - it's a survey of the underlying technology concepts that make Ajax work, from those most often associated with Ajax to understanding its design and tool intentions. With these basics in hand programmers will find Atlas a snap to master - thanks to PROGRAMMING ATLAS.

Programming Atlas, by Christian Wenz, is a good treatment of the upcoming ASP.NET Ajax release. Microsoft decided to change the name of the product from Atlas to ASP.NET 2.0 Ajax after more than two years in development. Even though the name may be out of date, the material in this book is not.

Wenz does a great job explaning how Ajax works and the role of JavaScript in it. He quickly covers basic JavaScript syntax and moves quickly into client side programming using Atlas. His methods of presenting segmented and documented code examples followed by the complete example is very reinforcing.

The topics covered are broad, including:

    Client Side Ajax

    Server Side Programming for Ajax

    Atlas Controls

    Databinding with Atlas

    Creating custom components

    XML-Script

    Ajax.NET

I was confused when I saw the chapter on Ajax.NET. I wouldn't expect to see a chapter on Castle if I bought a book on Spring.NET, or IBatis.NET in a book on NHibernate. It seems the space could have been used for a deeper treatment of other topics.

The book is well written, with very few errors. I would recommend this for anyone who has some development skill, works in .NET 2.0, and does web-client development.

    Good background but already outdated
This book rovides a good background for understanding what Atlas is, however, since the release of Web Extentions (formerly Atlas) Beta 1.0 it is severly outdated. Most examples no longer work and some discribed features have been eliminated.

Recommendation is to pass on this title and wait for a release version.
