The Chronicles of Riddick

The Chronicles of Riddick
Alan Dean Foster | 2004-04-27 00:00:00 | Del Rey | 352 | Movie Tie-Ins
Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.INo matter how long or how hard they strive, no matter how extensive their education as a species, no matter what they experience of the small heavens and larger hells they create for themselves, it seems that humans are destined to see their technological accomplishments always exceed their ability to understand themselves.Certainly there was no understanding, no meeting of the minds, on the world called Aquila Major. There was only the devastation of one mind-set by another. Proof of it took the form of a statue fashioned of advanced, reinforced preformata resin. It was an imposing piece of work, for all that it had been reproduced by its originators on many other worlds. Too many other worlds, according to some. Not nearly enough, according to those who had put it in place, its massive footing firmly rammed into the resistant soil of Aquila Major. It was a Conquest Icon of the Necromongers. Over five hundred meters tall, it gaped openmouthed at the utter desolation and wreckage that spread outward from its base. Whether it was seen as wailing in despair at its surroundings or moaning in triumph depended on whether one was a surviving citizen of that world's once-splendid capital city, now reduced to waste and ruin, or a member of that peculiar space-dwelling group who called themselves followers of the faith known as Necroism. They had been preparing for such moments for a very long time. They had burst out of the great darkness to impose themselves on the civilized worlds with a forcefulness and cool brutality that was as stunning in its single-mindedness as it was in its efficiency. Aquila Major was not the first of their conquests, nor would it be the last. As long as there were worlds to be freed, as long as humans lived who dwelled in ignorance of their true destiny, the Necromongers would continue with their work.Unlike so much of the humankind who had spread explosively throughout the galaxy, the Necromongers were driven by genuine purpose beyond the need to merely exist. They believed fervently in their work, and went about it with a determination and competence that was breathtaking to behold. In the majority of cases, literally breathtaking. Furthermore, there was no meanness in them, no suggestion of brutality for its own sake or of sadism. Like all true believers since the beginning of time, they saw only good arising out of the destruction they inflicted. Everything they did was for the benefit of the destroyed, they knew. Nor was their great work devoid of irony. For it was the dead who triumphed by passing on, while only the most dedicated forced themselves to carry on the work by continuing to live until due time.

Several of Alan Dean Foster's books number among my all-time favorites, but this book won't be one of them. Little to no effort was put into expanding the original screenplay, which is unfortunate, as the screenplay was awful. Foster would have done better had he not only expanded on the original screenplay, but deviated from it as much as possible. This is "paint-by-the-numbers" fiction, the author could have written it in his sleep.

This book was written for a quick paycheck. I found it a waste of both my time and money.

Avoid this book unless you're a rabid, rabid, rabid Riddick fan.
Reviews
Having seen the movie this book brought the memories to life.

Alan Dean Foster writes his own best selling sci fi space operas,

so David Twohy should be happy with this conversion of his script.

It is nice that they can't get any Riddick II or III out of this,

but there are two pre-Cronicles movies that are pretty good too:

one an animation.

At one point Kyra says: "I hate not being the bad guy."

That sort of sums up Riddick stories:

he hates not being the villain...

they have hunted him his whole life

and he has survived.
Reviews
Personally, I loved the films, even if the movie adaptation of this book was a little on the, if slightly, cheezy side. It was still a good film for what it was, and the characters are enough to make you want to watch it over and over.

What the book succeeds in however, is being infinately more brutal, more in depth, and more explanative of the characters you come to know. It is graphic in it's explanation, and if you can just picture Vin Diesels voice in your own head while reading, it's like an uncut version of the film. It's very much an enjoyable read, and if you love the universe of Riddick as I do, this is a must have next to the films and games, it will help add in those little pieces that were always missing from this film for you.

Reviews
This is actually a very well written book. I'm not saying it wins any awards or anything like that.

I might be a little bias cuz I do like the Riddick charcter, though. I was hoping this book might shed more light on the history of Riddick or tell us something new. But, unlike other books, this book is based off the movie. Pretty much the movie written scene for scene into a book. A nice read all the same.
Reviews
I read this book because I wanted to know more about what was behind the characters and concepts in the film. What was beneath those awe-inspiring visuals?

In the case of the Necromongers there was a wealth of information provided. Their entire history from the first Lord Marshal was laid bare- how Covu the scientist-philosopher founded the order based on the teaching that there was more than One God. It is told how he was tortured to the point that he could no longer feel pain- so his persecutors turned their attentions on his family... His escape and flight is told- and how at last he came to the Threshold of the glorious place that he called the UnderVerse. Here he found the new, almost magical strength to spread his crusade across the galaxy. The single goal of which was to bestow the blessing of death to all that lived in the universe. When the last living being was harvested then the Necromongers themselves would be promoted from quasi-dead to full dead...

In the case of Riddick, there wasn't a great deal more to learn. This was primarily because Riddick did not know all that much about his own origins- or what manner of being he truly was. It was pointed out that when survival called then his higher philosophical functions shut down in favor of instinct and perfect technical/tactical responses. In this, Riddick was the perfect survivor. His philosophy was that life was a bitch, you looked out for yourself or you didn't, and the galaxy was a cold, cold place. And yet there was something more to the man. You saw this in his standing behind his friends. You saw this when he was faced with certain death and something deep within, that even Riddick was unaware of, lashed out to do the impossible.

I don't think that I am spoiling anything here to say that Riddick becomes king, or Lord Marshal, by his own hand. After this could there be another film? I mean what would be left for him to accomplish? I think the answer lies in his first command- to order the fleet to the Threshold. After all, who is more qualified to storm the Gates of Hell than Riddick?

The soul of Kyra- and all the rest- will be rescued.

Equine Reproductive Physiology, Breeding and Stud Management (Cabi)

Equine Reproductive Physiology, Breeding and Stud Management (Cabi)
M. C. G. Davies Morel | 2003-02-20 00:00:00 | CABI | 384 | Horses
This 2nd edition of a popular textbook provides a comprehensive account of how horses can be successfully bred. The aim is to maximize productivity and animal welfare. The first section concentrates on reproductive physiology and is aimed at providing a scientific understanding of reproduction in the mare and stallion. The second section is more applied and demonstrates how this knowledge can be used to optimize breeding and stud management. This book is a proven success as a textbook for degree and diploma courses in equine studies. It has also proved to be a useful supplementary text for veterinary students, as well as valuable for veterinary practitioners and stud managers.
Reviews
Just a note from the author to let you know that a new edition has been produced, published in January 2003 and is now available. The new edition is based on the format of the first edition but has been changed considerably in places to reflect new research and knowledge.

Many people have told me that the old edition is an excellent teaching book for degree students and reference book for practionners and Veterinary surgeons - I am very grateful for their encouraging comments. I hope that this new edition will proove to be just as valuable.

Please note I have also written a more specialist book entitled Equine AI and published by the same publishers CABI.
Reviews
The book has good visual aids and is well written. The only drawback is the British English Terminology. The book is a must have for any breeder and is worth while for the pro and indispensible for the novice.

Accelerated Lotus Script Study Guide (Exam 190-291)

Accelerated Lotus Script Study Guide (Exam 190-291)
William Thompson | 1999-01-19 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill Companies | 345 | Certification Central
Accelerated study guide format--concise, portable, study anywhere--affordable. Only book to cover the Application Developpment exams for both the CLP and CLS. Written by a certified CLP/CLS instructor and well-known consultant. Each chapter ends with questions that cover the stated objectives listed at the beginning. Answers describe why each is correct and what is incorrect about the other answers.
Reviews
I used this book to study for the Lotus exam and found it extremely useful. Yes there were typos, but you could certainly see when they occur in the book if you have some experience already with programming lotusscript. I would buy this book just because it is sufficient to use, learn and study from.
Reviews
I can only agree with the comments below. If you want to study this topic and find something that adds more depth stay away from this awful book. Not only does it say nothing that you can't get from the on line designer help documentation but it actively confuses the entire topic by getting nearly everything wrong including syntax errors and the worst set of exam examples I have ever seen. The person who proof read this appalling "reference" should be shot -its a true disgrace to MH (Who have published some fine books on the Notes certification route)- a true victory for sloppy workmanship and generally lazy publishing. - Spend your money on something better.
Reviews
I just took the LotusScript test and passed with a 74% which isthe minimum score. I studied this book carefully and not much of itwas on the test. I noticed that much of the material is from Notes help. The other material added by the author appeared to be good information until I realized none of it was on the test. As for the errors in the book, there are indeed many. In a preverse sort of way, I enjoyed going through the book and correcting the errors. I thought it might help me on the test, but again, it didn't. I believe you can pass this test by downloading the test objective from the Lotus Web site and writing your own script and studying Notes help...
Reviews
This book provided absolutely nothing that I couldn't have gleaned myself from the Notes Designer Help database. I would think that any book worth publishing would provide some ILLUMINATION, not just rehash what Lotus has already published. Furthermore, this book is worthless as regards testing. Being a CLP myself in both SA and AD, and already possessing LotusScript skills, I was hoping the book would provide some insight into the actual test. Instead, it points out areas the test covers. Big deal--again, Lotus already provides that on their website. This book should have provided me with some greater depth on those subject areas, not just regurgitate the rules & regs. The author and McGraw-Hill should be ashamed.
Reviews
The cover itself has two major errors: the wrong test number (the book covers 190-273 not 190-291) and the target audience are developers not Systems Administrators as stated in the first bullet item. It's hard to believe that a reputable publisher would let this hit the shelves. (Others in this series have similarly egregious errors.)

Many of the sample test questions have errors in them which could leave the reader misinformed or confused. Some of the text seems to be blatantly repeated to add bulk.

Much of the good information is taken directly from the Lotus official documentation and Help database (word for word).

This book should never have been published and should not continue to be sold as it is.

Climate Change and Vulnerability

Climate Change and Vulnerability
Neil Leary,Cecelia Conde,Jyoti Kulkarni,Anthony Nyong,Juan Pulhin | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Earthscan Publications Ltd. | 446 | Economics
Many parts of the developing world are subject to variable and extreme climate, the impacts of which impede development and point to the need to improve the understanding and management of climate risks. These needs are being amplified by human-caused climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded in its 2001 report that much of the developing world is highly vulnerable to adverse impacts from climate change. But the IPCC also concluded that the vulnerabilities of developing countries are too little studied and too poorly understood to enable determination of adaptation strategies that would be effective at reducing risks. Climate Change and Adaptation and its companion volume Climate Change and Vulnerability, resulting from the work of the Assessments of Impacts and Adaptations to Climate Change (AIACC) project launched by the IPCC in 2002, are the first to provide a comprehensive investigation of the issues at stake.

Climate Change and Vulnerability discusses who is vulnerable to climate change, the nature of their vulnerability and the causes of their vulnerability for parts of the world that have been poorly researched until now. The book also provides researchers with new examples of applications of vulnerability assessment methods, an approach that is of growing interest in the climate change area but for which there are relatively few applications in the literature.

Foundations for Efficient Web Service Selection (Advances in Database Systems)

Foundations for Efficient Web Service Selection (Advances in Database Systems)
| 2009-09-29 00:00:00 | | 0 | Databases

Foundations for Efficient Web Service Selection describes the foundational framework for efficient Web service selection. It lays out a theoretical underpinning for the design of models and algorithms for searching and optimizing access to Web services.

Excerpts from Prof. Fabio Casati?s foreword:

This excellent book looks at the search problem from a broader perspective. Instead of narrowing down on a specific aspect or subproblem of service search, it dissects and analyzes the fundamental problems in search and presents concrete, applicable solutions as well as the theoretical foundations behind them? One aspect I found particularly significant in the book is the mind shift it generates from thinking about service modeling for the sake of supporting deployment or invocation to modeling for supporting search. This design for search approach is exactly what we do when we design databases because search is what we worry about in that case, and there is no reason why this shouldn?t be the case for services if we want services to be searchable with a similar effectiveness.

Foundations for Efficient Web Service Selection is designed for researchers and practitioners in the service-oriented computing area. This book is also suitable for advanced-level students in computer science.

Worlds of the Federation (Star Trek)

Worlds of the Federation (Star Trek)
Shane Johnson | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Pocket Books | 0 | Television
Reviews
Really the first of the trade paperbacks published in a TNG world. Covers TNG, original series, and movies. Some of the info is now dated or inaccurate as more Trek has come out in the last 20 years, but still a good read, and especially good for those "completists" out there.
Reviews
There are tons of aliens and planets out there in the Star Trek universe that are hardly touched upon by the official resources like the ST Encyclopedia and such. With this book you get details on lots of the more notable races from the original series and the first few seasons of The Next Generation as well. Now the author, Shane Johnson, got as much details as he could from official sources. The thing is there are questions that just aren't answered in other sources that Shane tries to fill the gaps in. How accurate that information is yet to be confirmed (then again ST has a tendency to rewrite its own universe from time to time so will anything ever be canon?).

The book has dozens of entries. There is background on racial traits, culture and even a geographical view of their home planet. The information seems solid, and I haven't found any real contradictions to official sources. Then again I'm not a hard-core Trekker. So take that with the appropriate grain of salt.

The thing is you don't get detailed alien information from other sources. Sure the major races like Vulcans, Romulans and Klingons are covered in great detail elsewhere, but what about the Gorn, Andorians, Binars, Horta and others? That's what this book fills the blanks in. Same goes for various creatures mentioned or shown like tribbles, the mugato and even details on the Denbian slime devil. I think there is also info on various flora from visited planets too.

Alas, until you can get confirmed information on this stuff this book is the only place you can speculate. If you are a do-or-die Star Trek fan that must have canon or nothing I really don't know what to say about this book. The author done his homework, but unless Universal signs off on it who knows? However if you are willing to take the information without Paramount's stamp of approval (and you never know... it might end up accurate in the end) and can find the book at a good price then go for it.

The Female Brain, Second Edition (Conceptual Advances in Brain Research)

The Female Brain, Second Edition (Conceptual Advances in Brain Research)
Cynthia L. Darlington | 2009-04-27 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 266 | Internal Medicine

The first edition of The Female Brain laid the groundwork for gaining a better understanding of the female brain, examining the evidence for structural and functional differences between the brains of males and females. Addressing a wealth of new research, the second edition continues in this vein, leading readers through the basic principles of anatomy and physiology and on to the complex behavioral functions which constitute the workings of the normal and abnormal female brain.

Examines Questions about Structural and Functional Differences

The book addresses the question of structural and functional differences between the female brain and the male brain. Are there differences? How good is the evidence? Where do the differences lie? Are there differences in the neuroanatomy of females, and if so, where? Do females and males process information differently, and if so, how? The author puts the relative lack of information on the female brain into historical perspective and reviews empirical evidence relevant to the different aspects of brain structure and function. She elucidates laterality, the functional asymmetry of the brain, the left brain-right brain distinctions, and how they differ between females and males.

A Clear Presentation and Evaluation of Medical and Scientific Evidence

Filled with rigorous scientific analysis in an easily accessible format and detailed explanatory diagrams, the book systematically develops the topic from anatomy to behavior. It draws on current research to explain why men and women behave differently and why these differences should be exploited when designing research and clinical studies.

Reviews
Konduru's review is for a different book! There are two books "The Female Brain" - one by prof. Cynthia Darlington from New Zealand, and second by Louann Brizendine M.D. from California. My guess is that Mr. or Ms. Konduru read Brizendine's book and placed his or her review beneath 2nd edition of prof. Darlington's book. Prof. Darlington book has 9 chapters:

1. Introduction

2. A historical pespective

3. Brain structure

4. Functional differences: Neurotransmitters and neuromodulators

5. Perception and cognition

6. Laterality

7. Neurology, psychiatry, and the female brain

8. Drugs, sex, and...

9. Where do we go from here?

It is a scientific book from Conceptual Advances in Brain Research series.
Reviews
I am writing this review to notify those who are contemplating reading this book that only read it if you want to read for fun and entertainment, not for pure knowledge. I purchased and read this book for two reason: 1) I was curious about the neuronal changes between men and women that affects the way they think and act, and (2) because one of my classmates in Introductory Neuroscience class recommended it as an essential look inside the female brain. As I read the book however, I was extremely disappointed in the amount of neuroscience that is actually present in the book and the bias in which the information is presented. Although I found the book to be an easy read with witty anecdotes and minimal use of complicated jargon, I found it to be over simplified to quench my curiosity about the neuroscience behind the clear difference between genders.

Style and Structure:

The book is divided into seven chapters discussing the different stages of a female's life, and topics like sex, love and trust, and emotions in terms of females. The book starts with an introduction section that pretty much covers most of the neuroscience present in the book. In the rest of the chapters, the author uses stories of her patients in the Women's and Teen Girl's Mood and Hormone Clinic, which she founded at University of California, San Francisco, to provide real life examples of emotions and actions of women during various stage of life. In addition, she provides extensive notes and references section for further readings.

Synopsis:

Introduction

Before even starting the book, the author provides a page of neuro-anatomy that is important in causing gender differences though their size and level of activation. This gives a very brief description of the part and how it is different in men and women. The brain parts that are discussed are the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC), Prefrontal Cortex (PFC), Insula, Hypothalamus, Amygdala, Pituitary Gland, and Hippocampus. Next, the author provides a list of hormones that affect the female brain. This section discusses the hormones in a very non-scientific way by describing what emotions these hormones invoke in women. And the last section describes the various phases of a female life, and hormone changes, female specific brain changes, and the reality changes that occur during these phases. Sadly, this section pretty much covers all of the neuroscience that is present in the book.

The Birth of the Female Brain

In this chapter we learn that female is the default brain setup in all fetuses until the eight week of development. During this time, the male fetuses experience a surge of testosterone, which decreases the cell growth in communication center of the brain and increases them in the aggression areas. In addition, she states that "girls arrive already wired as girls, and boys arrive already wired as boys" which means that their mental characteristics are already determined before birth. The author states that these initial changes in the brains cause differences in genders regarding reading emotions, differentiating tone changes in voices, showing empathy towards others, avoiding conflicts, and communicating feelings.

Teen Girl Brain

In this section, the author discusses how the brain changes during puberty and why there is so much drama in a teen girl's life. For example, the author discusses how the estrogen and progesterone waves have a great impact on the emotions and actions of a teenage girl. In addition, the author discusses how hormones in teen girls have increased memory and increased desire to communicate their feelings while the teen boys start becoming recluse.

Love and Trust

In this section, we learn topics such as female mindset on mating and how it has been influenced by the evolution, chemical attraction between genders, how women calculate potential danger, and how love influences and changes neural circuitry. When discussing love, the author writes "it shares brain circuitry with states of obsession, mania, intoxication, thirst, and hunger." In addition, we learn that dopamine and oxytocin play an extremely important role in bond forming in females.

Sex: The Brain below the Belt

This section discusses the various aspects of a female orgasm. She says that "female sexual turn-on begins, ironically, with a brain turn-off." This means that any activation in the amygdala disrupts the female orgasm. In addition, she discusses the evolutionary significance of a female orgasm. This chapter ends with a discussion of what sex means to men vs. what it means to a women.

The Mommy Brain

This chapter discusses the influence of hormones during the pregnancy and birth of the baby. This chapter mainly focus on the depth of the connection between a mother and a baby. The hormone that are significant during the delivery of the baby is oxytocin. When a woman's water breaks, the progesterone levels in the body collapse, and the oxytocin throughout the body greatly increases. Not only do mothers have increases protective instinct, they also have "better special memory," and "they may be more flexible, adaptive, and courageous." More surprisingly, even if it is not your baby, a person who is around a child a lot will have more oxytocin release than those that are no around children. This chapter also discusses breast feeding and the daddy brain.

Emotion: The Feeling Brain

This chapter discusses the biology of the gut feeling, and how woman are more easily aroused by emotional feeling than men. We learn that it is much easier to activate a woman's amygdala than a male's. Because increased memory is associated with the emotional arousal during the formation of the memory, women tend to have much better memory than men. This chapter also discusses the concept of "mirroring" in women that helps them understand others' emotions better.

The Mature Female Brain

This chapter's main focus is the brain's and body's response to the decline in hormones during menopause for women. It discusses how a woman's mood, personality, and thoughts change during this time, and how the drop in the levels of estrogen and oxytocin in the body affect this. This section also discusses the decrease in the testosterone in females during this time, which decreases the sex drive for women as well. She suggests that hormonal supplements can help a woman get through these years of her life.

Critique:

Initially, I would like to point out the positive aspect of the book. The book was entertaining in its description of how different stages in a woman's life are affected by the hormones. On the other hand, I felt that the book had several short coming that affect my confidence in recommending this book. For example, the way in which the author presented the scientific information in the book. If the author was confident that her claims about the female brain were accurate, she would have provided references where she made claims about various facts. Instead, she writes the book without any references in the text, and provides a 57-page list of references with no explanation of how these references assisted her in her conclusions. If she had provided citations throughout her book of published literature or other scientific sources, it would have greatly increased the credibility of the book.

In addition, the book's major focus is how the levels of hormones in the female have a great impact on a female's emotions, impulses, values, and their perception of reality. In that case, why is the book titled the "Female Brain" when her entire focus is the effect of hormones on a female? This misnomer also decreases my regard for the book as well.

As a person who believes in gender equality regardless of physical changes, it is extremely disappointing at how the author try to emphasize on the factors that make women better than men. She repeatedly compares various aspects of men and women, and she repeatedly presents a conclusion that women are better than men. As an author of a book that is trying to provide scientific information, the author needs to provide information in a objective way such that the reader can form his/her own opinion. In this case however, the author imposes her opinion that women are better than men throughout the book.

I recommend this book to only those who are reading for entertainment more than knowledge. If you are reading for entertainment, however, it is an enjoyable book because the author writes the book in a very novel like fashion. If you are critical reader trying to gather scientific knowledge about the female brain, I would suggest you look elsewhere.

Albert Einstein: Out of My Later Years

Albert Einstein: Out of My Later Years
Albert Einstein | 1993-10-18 00:00:00 | Gramercy | 288 | Einstein, Albert
Albert Einstein, among the greatest scientists of all time, was also a man of profound thought and deeply humane feelings. His collected essays offer a fascinating and moving look at one of the twentieth century's leading minds.

Covering a fifteen year period from 1934 to 1950, the contents of this book have been drawn from Einstein's articles, addresses, letters and assorted papers. Through his words, you can understand the man and gain his insight on social, religious, and educational issues.
Reviews
The book arrived in good condition on a timely manner. Haven't had time to read, ordered lots of books. thanks
Reviews
Considering this book offer insights into the mind of one of history's greatest thinkers, I was slightly disappointed to find Einstein's views outside of science to be somewhat thin. It is natural to not expect great revelation from outside one's specialty, but as a famous intellectual, Einstein's should be the exception.

I do not rate this book poorly because it does offer a wide spectrum of topics which coming from Einstein is appealing. Some of the topics outside of science include politics, religion, and even racism; thus offering an ample range of thought. The section on science is sound as expected and perhaps on this portion alone the book is worthwhile; however, his thoughts on the other topics included offer little revelation or at least nothing new or profound. It is for this reason I do not rate this book highly.

I offer three stars so as not to discount the enjoyable read one might find merely gaining access to Einstein's thoughts on a spectrum of topics. However, on the same account, I do not offer more as I do not feel this book presents the insight one would expect from Einstein and thus it is somewhat disappointing.
Reviews
This volume collects essays of the last fifteen years of his life. The work has sections on 'Convictions and Beliefs' 'Science and Life' ' Public Affairs' ' Personalities' and 'His own people: The Jews"

The work features expositions of some of Einstein's major scientific work.

Among the personalities written about are Gandhi who Einstein greatly admires, Newton, Kepler, Planck, Madame Curie, Langevin, and lesser known figures Paul Ehrenfest,Carl von Ossietsky.

Einstein writes much about the terrible changes in Germany he saw in his own lifetime, the rise of Nazism and Anti- Semitism.

He writes about the creation of a national homeland for the Jews, his own Zionism, and his own connection with the Jewish people.

He writes too about his conception of world- peace, about the threat to the world brought about something he is no small part a contributor to, the harnessing of the atom.

In writing about himself in the opening section of the work he says, "I do the thing which my own nature drives me to do. It is embarassing to earn so much love and respect for it."

He celebrates the life of thought , of the solitary individual .

Einstein is the greatest modern example of Keynes dictum of how it is 'ideas' that change the world. He is the example of how one man alone , thinking, transformed our understanding of nature, and our power to change it.

In these essays the main interests of Einstein's life are touched upon. He writes with clarity and modesty.

An invaluable opportunity to be in touch with ' the Mind that defined an Age'.
Reviews
Out of my Later Years is a collection of Einstein's speeches and articles covering not just physics but his thoughts on the social condition of man, of Jews, and of war as well as several speeches about the likes of Max Planck, Mahatma Gandhi, and Marie Curie.

As letters and speeches, these are written as the ordinary man that Einstein once was - very easy to read and understand. Even some of the physics lectures are understandable. Each is relatively short making this perfect for when you want to read something of substance but don't have much time.

The sections on Public Affairs are especially haunting as Einstein presents his arguments for the "global village" and advocated someting akin to the current U.N. - things that began to come into their own after his passing. In particular, there is an interchange between him and a group of Communist scientists that underlines the Cold War tension in its height and is a chilling read now in the Post Soviet Union age.
Reviews
I found Einstein's desire to start a rock band at such an early age very surprising. A man before his time for sure. Singing about relativity while distancing himself from the groupies must have been difficult. The book reads like a good guitar riff, jolting one's mind from time to time. Excellent!

Dracula in Love

Dracula in Love
Karen Essex | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Doubleday | 384 | Romance Novels
As a lover of creatures of the night, I thouroughly enjoyed the brimming vampire mythology contained in this book. There's an entire underlayer to this dark world that I wasn't aware existed. Any true vampire fan will appreciate the stones that have been unturned by Essex.

I also appreciate the author's take on Stoker's original story, despite the generous dose of romance inevitably geared at female readers. Not being a female reader, I was drawn to the darker parts of Victorian London and the rich history provided, not to mention the chilling hallways and rooms in the asylum.

Overall, I found the book engaging and a good read. With elements for vampire fans, literature lovers, history fanatics, there is plenty to sink your teeth into.

To Wear the Dust of War: From Bialystok to Shanghai to the Promised Land, an Oral History (Palgrave Studies in Oral History)

To Wear the Dust of War: From Bialystok to Shanghai to the Promised Land, an Oral History (Palgrave Studies in Oral History)
Samuel Iwry | 2004-08-21 00:00:00 | Palgrave Macmillan | 256 | Jewish
On the eve of World War I, ten-year-old Samuel Iwry and his family joined other Jewish refugees in fleeing Poland for Russia. At age twenty-nine, Iwry was forced to flee again--this time from the Soviets--and ended up in Shanghai, joining 20,000 Jewish refugees already there. The story of the diaspora caused by the Holocaust is well-known, but the Far Eastern dimension has come to light only very recently. Iwry's story unfolds in his own compelling words, conveying the harrowing details of flight and survival into vivid detail. Leslie Kelly suceeds in placing Iwry's experiences into much wider historical context. This oral history sheds light on Jewish life in eastern Europe during the inter-war period, the search for a safe haven from Nazis and Soviets, daily life in the Shanghai ghetto, and emigration to America. Iwry's story is representative of the Jewish experience but also completely unique.

Reviews
The book reads like your grandpa talking directly to you, so it is realling interesting although it rambles a bit. But this man had an incredible life and it is a fascinating window on the plight of Jews who escaped the holocaust through Shanghai. DEspite all he and his family went through, he can still spike the story with humor. It's hard to put it down and it really makes you think. Highly recommended!
Reviews
Samuel Iwry, a Jewish scholar, gives a remarkable first person account of his experiences fleeing Poland, going across Russia to Japan, then to Shanghai, and ultimately to America, in flight from the Nazis, beginning in 1939. Examples are use of forged documents, crossing a border surreptitiously, waiting in Vilnius for opportunity, detention in Shanghai (with 20,000 other Jewish refugees), and travel to the U.S. (where he settled in Baltimore and became a professor at Johns Hopkins). Highly readable and suitable for adults and young adults.

Karate Kata and Applications: v. 3

...This book is a good resource if you're just beginning to see some of the other combat applications of kata outside of the strikes. Good joint locks for the Heian/Tekki forms, but as the forms get more advanced, the locks do not. A few interesting throws I might not have figured out without the book.

Dan level readers may find this book a bit basic, though it may unlock your training if you've never thought of forms in this way.

Whether it's a novel, memoir, diary, poem, or drama, a common thread runs through the literature of the Nazi Holocaust--a "motif of personal testimony to the dearness of humanity." With that perspective the expert authors of Encyclopedia of Holocaust Literature undertake profiling 128 of the most influential first generation authors who either survived, perished, or were closely connected to the Holocaust. Arranged alphabetically by author, the entries are organized into three primary divisions: (1) an opening section on why the author's work is significant or distinctive; (2) a section containing biographical information, followed by (3) a critical examination of the highlights of the author's work. The Encyclopedia is intended for all students and teachers of the Holocaust, regardless of their levels of learning.

Hitchhiker's Guide to Visual Studio and SQL Server: Best Practice Architectures and Examples (Microsoft Windows Server System Series)

Hitchhiker's Guide to Visual Studio and SQL Server: Best Practice Architectures and Examples (Microsoft Windows Server System Series)
| 2006-11-02 00:00:00 | | 0 | Visual Studio

Since 1994 when he wrote his first ?Hitchhiker?s Guide?, William Vaughn has been providing developers all over the world the intimate details of how SQL Server can be accessed and managed from RAD languages like Visual Basic and Visual Basic .NET. With the 7th Edition, Bill has completely rewritten this encyclopedic work from cover to cover?giving readers his insightful views on how applications should be built to maximize both developer and code performance. Visual Studio and the languages it hosts have never been as sophisticated as they are today?the same can be said for SQL Server. This makes it even more important for developers to understand how to best leverage their features without being held back by their complexity. That?s what this book is all about?making it easier for developers regardless of their know-how.

The 7th edition is unique in that it?s designed to provide not only up-to-date tutorials on the latest development tools provided by Visual Studio and SQL Server, but also a solid platform of architectural advice and rich examples for developers trying to choose between the myriad of platform options. Beginners and experts alike will find comprehensive step-by-step instructions that can make the reader?s introduction to the latest versions of Visual Studio and SQL Server far easier.

Key topic coverage includes:

?  Data access architectures and how to choose the best strategy for Windows Forms, ASP.NET, XML Web Services, and SQL Server CLR executables. Where

do these make sense and how much will they cost to build and maintain?

?  SQL Server and relational database fundamentals and inner-machinery.

How does SQL Server work and why is it important that developers know?

?  Making the development experience more productive through judicious use of the Visual Studio toolset, and how to know when the wizards can help.

?  Using the latest ADO.NET data provider efficiently and safely.

?  How to protect the security of your database?and your job?by avoiding common mistakes.

?  How to build secure, efficient, scalable applications in less time with fewer resources?how to create faster code faster.

?  How to leverage the potential of SQL Server CLR executables and knowing

when these features make sense.

?  How to work with your DBA to maintain database integrity and security.

?  Working with the new Visual Studio report controls to expose your

organization?s data safely and easily with or without leveraging existing

SQL Server Reporting Services technology.

William R. Vaughn is the President of Beta V Corporation and a Microsoft MVP. In 2000 he retired from Microsoft after 14 years to focus on mentoring, speaking, and writing. His specialty is data access application design especially when connecting to SQL Server?over the years he?s written 12 books on the subject. He?s a popular speaker at technical conferences all over the world where his wit and no-holds-barred technical insights win him rave reviews. William is also a member of the prestigious INETA Speaker?s Bureau. His works include articles for SQL Server Magazine and a bi-weekly editorial for Processor Magazine as well as books published by Microsoft Press and Apress.

The book includes a DVD that contains a wealth of examples as well as several sample databases used to illustrate points discussed in the book. Authenticated readers will also have unrestricted access to the book?s supporting web site, www.hitchhikerguides.net, where additional examples, online forums, and other supplementary materials are available.

Simply put: This guy talks too much. I want a book that can show me how to do things and move along. This author likes using acronyms in his writings (LOL, FWIW, AFAIC, etc.) without providing a glossary for them. Some I know, but not all. I'm sure there is good information in it, but I just don't have a year to read this. I need to develop now! Does anyone want to buy my copy of this book? I'll be happy to sell it to you!

Great Book for Understanding SQL Sever and ADO
I have been programming for years and didn't really realize how much I didn't know.

Mr. Vaughn has been building databases and writing code against them since the beginning. His explanations of DB and ADO evolution is something that every webApp/dba should know.

The book is a fast read, imformative with lots of .Net examples.

Thanks for writing such a great book. I am excited to get the next version.

I am very inmpressed with this book! This is one that will be dog earred.

User review
A must own for DBAs and Developers
This is truly an outstanding book. Not only is it extremely well written and `readable` (unfortunately many a tech book is not these days), I feel it begins a dialog of sorts between the developer side of the fence and the database side of the fence (were that there were no fences, alas).

I've visited far too many organizations that work in near complete isolation when developing applications. For those types of organizations, no tool like Team System will improve things: if they don't collaborate already, a tool won't get them to do so.

We need more books like this in the market. Today's technology is so complex you simply can not perform your role properly without understanding the larger picture.

User review
Excellent Book
I'm a C programmer, new to SQL and Windows programming.

Bill's book has gotten me up to speed on SQL Server and Visual Studio in record time.

I looked at a number of books on these subjects and this one definitely stands out as being the most comprehensive. At the same time, it is easy to follow.

I highly recommend the book.

This book does a good job of doing exactly what the title says it would do. I bought this because at work our company has always lived in a Wintel World. But we acquired another company that was Linux centric and it was clear that us Windows people needed a crash course of Linux. I needed some quick exposure to Linux and a way to cut my learning curve by being able to understand how to transfer tasks in Windows over to Linux. This book shortened my learning curve because as good as the net is about giving information to us for free. Sometimes I just like curling up with a good book.

It is a book, explaining Linux in a simple,

clear manner. Best for a reader with some

Windows skills.

It was my old dream to learn Linux. I had heard that it

is a stable, free operation system. Having little

understanding about Linux before, I read the book,

installed Linux and now feel comfortable with it.

I found this particular book to be remarkably easy to follow, accurate, informative, and generally a great help. I am not a computer professional by trade, and my only experience has been with Windows. But like many people I have been quite frustrated with Windows and wished to try Linux. With this book I was able to install Linux and to use it to do all the things I had previously done with Windows.

Now she examines the case histories of twelve of the most notorious serial killers of the last one hundred years, and answers the questions: What clues did they leave behind? How were they eventually caught? How was each twist and turn of their crimes matched by the equally compelling weapons of science and logic?

From exploring the nineteenth century's earliest investigative tools to remarkable twenty-first century CSI advances, The Devil's Dozen provides a fascinating window into the world of those who kill-and those who dedicate their lives to bringing them to justice.
Reviews
This is a fascinating book about very cunning serial killer monsters and heroic efforts of detectives and forensic scientists working together to stop a killing machine and bring him to justice. Dr. Ramsland has carefully selected serial killers that are not household names, like "The Red Spider, who left a note in red ink near one of his victims in a brazen and brutal Christmas Eve killing and then later sent alarming notes to newspaper editors written in blood-colored ink.

Ramsland's expertise in selecting the terrifying killers is only part of the equation. These twelve cases are dramatic examples of how police and forensic experts brought these killing machines to justice. She captures the fear, excitment and revulsion of the people who are working crazy hours for days, months and even years trying to prevent these killers from killing again. Each of the twelve cases is the makings of a movie.

It's a great read, especially for audiences of CSI and the other forensics TV series. Highly recommended.

Review
[An] immensely stimulating book...Herlihy has a rare talent for incorporating lively narrative evidence into the context suggested by quantifiable data and writing about it with grace and verve.
--David Nicholas (American Historical Review )

Herlihy's excellent work makes accessible persuasive counterarguments against the theory that affection for children developed only recently. Herlihy...demonstrates how modern society moved toward its definition of 'family' and shows its emergence in the medieval period. He uses scattered and diverse source material to trace the development of the family from Roman times to the medieval development of common expectations of family life applicable to all classes. The sources, ranging from well-known classical and medieval writers such as Aristotle, Tacitus, Aquinas, and Augustine to monastic archives, sermons, lives of saints, and civil archives, provide models and reflections of family life, including the church's use of scripture to establish marital and family standards applicable to ruler and serf alike...This book will become the standard source for family history in cultural context. In spite of its erudition, it is accessible to undergraduates...[A] fascinating, readable, and scholarly work. (Choice )

Here is a happy marriage: a preeminent historian tackling the thorniest of problems, household and family in medieval Europe. The result is altogether felicitous, a rich, detailed, well-written, and fascinating book of extraordinary range, one designed for students and general readers that will also be invaluable to specialists.
--Robert S. Gottfried (Speculum: A Journal of Medieval Studies )

Summary: Excellent overview, but a bit narrow
Rating: 4

Herlihy has done a masterful job of detaling the daily life of most Europeans during the middle ages, exploring gender roles and the various "chores" a household had to tend to as the seasons changed. It provides an outstanding overview of the complex and labor intensive work of survival during this period of time. However, I found it a bit narrow in terms of the time period it covered. The "middle ages" last over 1000 years - from around 500 AD (the "early middle ages") to the "late middle ages" (ending around 1450). In the course of such a long period of time, even in the middle ages, tasks, roles and habits change. This is not fully addressed, as the majority of the book discusses households in the "high" (800 - 1200) middle ages. Nonetheless, an excellent introduction to the subject.
