Storming Heaven: Class Composition and Struggle in Italian Autonomi

Storming Heaven: Class Composition and Struggle in Italian Autonomi
Steve Wright | 2002-02-20 00:00:00 | Pluto Press | 272 | Popular Economics
Storming Heaven is the first comprehensive survey of Italian autonomist theory, from its origins in the anti-stalinist and workerist left of the 1950s to its heyday twenty years later. Autonomist marxism was a political tendency which privileged themes--self-organisation, construction of identity, grassroots politics, subjects in struggle--which in many ways can be seen as the precursor of today's debates around direct action protest. Emphasising the dynamic nature of class struggle as the distinguishing feature of autonomist thought, Wright explores how its understanding of class politics developed alongside emerging social movements. Offering a critical and historical exploration of the tendency's emergence in postwar Italy, Storming Heaven moves beyond the crisis of traditional analytical frameworks on the left, and assesses the strengths and limitations of autonomist marxism as first developed by Antonio Negri, Mario Tronti, Sergio Bologna and others.

Reviews
Excepted from "Operaismo, Autonomia, and the Emergence of New Social Subjects," Perspectives on Anarchist Theory Volume 9 Number (Fall 2005): 59-63:

Turning to Storming Heaven: Class Composition and Struggle in Italian Autonomist Marxism by Steve Wright we can contextualize historically and socially many of the concepts of autonomist Marxism / operaismo. Wright traces the emergence and development of operaisti thought and practice from the mid-1940s to its dissolution in the late 1970s. His book serves as a corrective by placing Negri's work in the context of the movements he was involved in, and drawing out underappreciated voices. This is especially important as operaisti concepts did not emerge from the work of isolated theorists but from those engaged in the ongoing processes of organizing.

The neglect of many of the voices from operaismo that Wright draws attention to--such as those of Panzieri, Tronti, Alquati and Bologna---is due to the lack of translation of their materials into English. Wright's book is the first and only text in English to provide an overview of the evolution and development of operaismo, a task that it handles quite successfully. While the detailed history reads at some points like an extended version of a "who's arguing with whom" in the radical left, it is important to be able to trace the development of these ideas. It is the setting of Italy's "economic miracle" in the 1950s and the decisions of the Italian Communist Party to emphasize state capitalist development combined with the ideological fallout from the 1956 Soviet invasion of Hungary and massive immigration from southern Italy that created a grouping of workers who were not willing to work within the confines of existing party and union structures. It is these emergent populations and the industrial unrest they fermented that would congeal the figure of the mass worker in the theorization of the operaistis. The figure of mass worker is characterized by labor which is: (1) massified, or the performance of simple repetitive labor; (2) located in the immediate process of production; and (3) individually interchangeable but collectively indispensable to the workings of capital.

Wright brings together the vast array of operaisti practices by looking at their emergence and development in relation to the concept of class composition. He uses class composition as a unifying focal point for the development of the Italian extraparliamentary left, starting with organizations like Potere Operaio to more dispersed forms of organizing grouped together under the network of Autonomia. The idea of class composition describes the effects, circumstances and behaviors resulting from the development of the working class in specific conditions of labor, and the ways in which the subjective experiences of a population shape and relate to their circumstances. For Italian autonomist Marxists theorizing about their situation the concept of class composition was central because it highlighted what Wright describes as: "the importance it placed upon the relationship between the material structure of the working class, and its behavior as a subject autonomous from the dictates of both the labor movement and capital." While earlier operaisti texts focused exclusively on labor within the factory walls, operaismo's theorization of work broadened beyond this narrow view of the factory itself to the unleashing of new forces of antagonism on the streets in 1968 and the Italian "hot autumn" of 1969, during which students and new social forces emerged into popular consciousness.

It is these newly emerging social forces that worked their way into operaisti theories of the social factory. Tronti described the idea of the social factory as: "At the highest level of capitalist development, the social relation becomes a moment of the relation of production; the whole of society becomes an articulation of production; in other words, the whole of society exists as a function of the factory and the factory extends its domination over the whole of society." Here, the production of surplus value and its extraction no longer occurs only within the factory walls but is diffused through the social milieu. The diffuse nature of production, as described by a concept like the social factory, meant that the privileged revolutionary position of the industrial working class would be ceded to support for all struggles that intervened in broader social reproduction. This means that various forms of social struggle, from student organizing to feminist movements, are not resistance outside of what could be considered class struggle but are all interventions in reclaiming the common resources and social energies that capital is continually trying to siphon off for its own uses.

Operaisti, morphing their practices in accordance with the changing nature of social and political production, came to argue that the primary objective of organization is to "maintain the continuity of open struggle." This represents a shifting away from the dead ends created by the constraints of orthodox Marxist theorization, as well as socialist and communist party discipline. However, this does not mean that the new concepts developed by operaisti theorists always found their way into practice immediately. Refocusing away from Marxist orthodoxy and workerism in a negative sense (focus on workplace struggle to the neglect of all others) took some years to be worked out effectively. For example, throughout the 1970s, operaisti theorists often embraced the struggles of others (such as feminist campaigns like Wages for Housework) only to the extent that they agreed with and extended arguments of the operaistis. And as the social antagonisms unleashed in the 1970s were beset by factionalization and disagreement, massive state repression in response to such acts as the kidnapping and murder of Prime Minister Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades would tear apart the project of operaismo for some time.

Recovering the Frontier State: War, Ethnicity, and the State in Afghanistan

Recovering the Frontier State: War, Ethnicity, and the State in Afghanistan
Rasul Bakhsh Rais | 2008-03-20 00:00:00 | Lexington Books | 252 | Afghanistan
The book explores how legacies of internal strife and foreign invasions have altered the balance of social and political forces that provided some measure of stability to Afghanistan. The country faces structural constraints in the way of reviving itself owing to ethnic fragmentation, Taliban insurgency, and shallow social roots of political power. The central argument is that Afghanistan needs positive international engagement to find a new balance among its fractious social groups and build effective state and nationhood.

Eternal Journey

Eternal Journey
Alex Archer | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Gold Eagle | 314 | Fiction Other
Alex Archer and Jean Rabe have given action adventure fans yet another fine entry in the Rogue Angel series. Educational, interesting, and action packed, as always, Eternal Journey takes us Downunder for an archaeological expedition in Australia of artifacts that are surprising and the target of much clandestine interest. Here, our heroine is truly on her own and must cope with a rapidly developing situation on the fly. While I liked the plotline about the artifacts much more than the plotline about the terrorist involved, what makes a continuing series interesting (and what I think most of the other reviewers don't understand), is that each adventure has to remain new and exciting and not simply be a rehash of characters and interactions we have seen before. The publisher, the editors, and the authors all understand the need to vary the mix within the confines of the character and the series and I think more thoughtful readers would agree. In Eternal Journey, we and Annja meet new and interesting characters who get swept into a sinister situation beyond their comprehension, yet meet it with bravery and quick thinking. Isn't that what action adventure is all about?

The Judicial Assessment of Expert Evidence

The Judicial Assessment of Expert Evidence
Deirdre Dwyer | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 368 | Law
Justice systems increasingly rely on expert evidence. We are therefore obliged to justify the courts' ability to assess this evidence, especially when the courts must resolve disagreements between experts or address possible bias. By reintegrating contemporary evidence theory with applied philosophy, Deirdre Dwyer analyses the epistemological basis for the judicial assessment of expert evidence. Reintegrating evidence with procedure, she also examines how we might arrange our legal processes in order to support our epistemological and non-epistemological expectations. Including analysis of the judicial assessment of expert evidence in civil litigation (comparing practice in England and Wales with that in the United States, France, Germany and Italy), the book also provides the first detailed account of the historical development of English civil expert evidence and the first analysis of the use of party experts, single joint experts and assessors under the Civil Procedure Rules.

Redesigning the Financial Aid System: Why Colleges and Universities Should Switch Roles with the Federal Government

Redesigning the Financial Aid System: Why Colleges and Universities Should Switch Roles with the Federal Government
Robert B. Archibald | 2002-11-13 00:00:00 | The Johns Hopkins University Press | 256 | Education
As the cost of higher education continues to rise, students and their families find it increasingly difficult to navigate the financial aid maze. In Redesigning the Financial Aid System, economist Robert Archibald examines the history of the system and its current flaws, and he makes a radical proposal for changing the structure of the system.

Archibald argues that one of the problems with the current model--in which universities are responsible for the majority of grants while the federal government provides student loans--is that a student cannot know the final price of attending a given institution until after he or she has applied, been accepted, and received a financial aid offer. As a result, students remain largely uninformed about the cost of their college educations until very late in the decision-making process and so have difficulty making a timely choice. In addition, financial aid information is kept private, creating confusion over the price of a college education and the role of financial aid.

Under Archibald's proposed reforms, the federal government would assess a student's financial need and provide need-based grants, while institutions would be responsible for guaranteeing student loans. Not only would this new system demystify financial aid and allow students to be better informed about the cost of college earlier in the process, but it would greatly simplify the application procedure and prevent financial aid allocation from contributing to the problem of rising tuition costs. Archibald's clear explanation of the current system--its impact, strengths, and weaknesses--as well as his plans for reform, will be of interest to educators, administrators, students, and parents.
Reviews
This is an excellent book and, along with Ehrenberg's "Tuition Rising," should be a requirement in any Higher Education Finance or Economics class. The author not only discusses financial aid, but also the economics of higher education in an easy to read and clear and precise style.

Barbarossa: Hitler's Invasion of Russia 1941 (Battles & Campaigns)

Barbarossa: Hitler's Invasion of Russia 1941 (Battles & Campaigns)
David M. Glantz | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Tempus Publishing, Limited | 256 | World War II
Reviews
David Glantz achieved in this book perhaps the most complete coverage of the initial six months of Operation "Barbarossa", presenting the reader with a wealth of material that is hard to be found elsewhere. He also has the talent to make overly complicated operational maneuvers to look very simple and clarified and some of the modern maps that are provided are a synopsis of the campaign themselves! It is true that the book has some annoying typos and most of the photos are retouched or with wrong legends, but this does not diminish the excellent quality of the text and the great work done by the author, especially on the issue of the correct military terminology (the German Army didn't have any Panzer Corps in 1941. Most authors mistakenly call Motorized Corps as Panzer Corps, but not David Glantz). There are also extensive orders of battle in the closing pages and many notes for the military history buffs who want to explore the subject further.
Reviews
A great introduction to the Eastern Front. Glantz did a great job with this book, a lot of information and sources (I especially liked the table that had which army was activated when and where it was moved, quite helpful). Glantz addresses Barbarossa and how it came about, he gives a good overall account of the invasion and the encirclement operations by the Germans and at the same time also discusses the 'myths' that have begun to circulate about the Eastern Front of 1941. A great addition to any library on the Eastern front and a source that I come back to time and time again for my needs when it comes to the invasion and Red Army actions in 1941.
Reviews
I don't want to dwell on, so let us consider just illustrations. In the beginning of the book you can find: "All illustrations are from the author's collection." Therefore, photos have been picked up by David Glantz and it is him who is responsible for their accuracy.
#202 (page 196) "Red army machine-gunners..." Excuse me, but on the photo there is an anti-tank rifle, not a machine-gun...

#91 (page 65), #139 (page 129), #147(page 137) #189 (page 178) #198 (page 192) the photos are definitely are not of Barbarossa time. Well, on these photos Soviets wear post-Stalingrad uniform...

How can we take seriously the rest of the book???
Reviews
This is pretty much the shortest and easiest read of all books written by Glantz. It's a great introduction to his more detailled analysis of the major battles of the russian front. The book would have gotten 5 stars if over 20 pages of barbarossa were not copied from his other book "when titans clashed". Or is it the other way around? Needless to say i was dumbfounded to reread the same thesis twice, in two different book. Anyways, it still a fascinating book.
Reviews
Mr. Glantz's book about operation Barbarossa probably has a number of qualities, which will appeal to WW II aficionados or armchair strategists: his a precise description of the orders of battle and of the forces in presence and he clearly spells out the various steps of the campaign. He tells the story clinically, with some maps and some pictures, but I found the book less than compelling reading for three reasons: the prose is, shall I say, uninspiring; there is absolutely no attempt at enlightening the reader as to the geopolitical context, except for a few allusions to Stalin's well known purges of his own army and the like; there is no human dimension whatsoever. A book primarily for readers with an interest in how the various army groups of the Wehrmacht interacted and how many infantry or armour battalions there were in a Panzerdivision, but the epic of this gigantic chapter in human history and tragedy is unfortunately to be found elsewhere.

Usher Syndrome - A Bibliography and Dictionary for Physicians, Patients, and Genome Researchers
Philip M. Parker | 2007-07-19 00:00:00 | ICON Group International, Inc | 156 | Programming
In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: "The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with Usher syndrome is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so.

Who Killed Health Care?: America's $2 Trillion Medical Problem - and the Consumer-Driven Cure

Who Killed Health Care?: America's $2 Trillion Medical Problem - and the Consumer-Driven Cure
Regina Herzlinger | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill; 1 edition | 240 | Medicine
One of the nation̢۪s most respected health care analysts, Regina Herzlinger exposes the motives and methods of those who have crippled America̢۪s health care system-figures in the insurance, hospital, employment, governmental, and academic sectors. She proves how our current system, which is organized around payers and providers rather than the needs of its users, is dangerously eroding patient welfare and is pushing costs out of the reach of millions.

Who Killed Health Care? then outlines Herzlinger̢۪s bold new plan for a consumer-driven system that will deliver affordable, high-quality care to everyone. By putting insurance money in the hands of patients, removing the middleman in the doctor-patient relationship, and giving employers cost relief, consumers and physicians will be empowered to make the system work the way it should. Herzlinger describes in precise detail how her innovative program will provide
* Smaller, disease-focused medical facilities that provide complete care for patients
* A national system of medical records that provides privacy with confidential access by approved practitioners
* Mandatory performance evaluations of all hospitals and all other medical organizations
* Mandatory health insurance with subsidies for those who cannot afford it

Who Killed Health Care? is a call to arms that must be answered; the welfare of every American hangs in the balance.

Subversions (Contemporary Theatre Review)

Subversions (Contemporary Theatre Review)
Griffin | 1998-03-01 00:00:00 | Routledge | 124 | Theater
In pointing to the way in which women have been historically represented (or left out altogether) and the reality of women's lives, feminist performance makes the histories, lives and desires of women visible, as this volume of plays from the 1990s aims to illustrate. Historical focus is shared by all three plays in this volume, as is the stylistic challenge which they offer to the "malestream" version of history. In "Walking on Peas", Erika Bloch takes the "hidden", unknown historical lives of women who cross-dressed and joined the army as its subject. Foursight Theatre has made looking at history through "the eyes of women such as Eva Braun, Pope Joan, Mae West and Ulrike Meinhof" a key focus of their work. Their group devised a one-act play on Mary Tudor and Queen Elizabeth I, "Bloody Mary and the Virgin Queen". Julie Wilkinson's "Mrs. Beeton's History of the World" fuses the "great" and the "ordinary" by representing Mrs Beeton in juxtaposition with the figure of her working-clas maid, Caroline.

Safar Timura, a character modeled on Omar Khayyam, continues his desperate journey in this next volume of the Tales of the Timuras. In attempting to lead his uprooted people to a haven safe from the vengeance-mad Protarus, Safar finds himself rushing towards the volcanic destruction and personal doom he has anticipated in vision. Several excellent new characters are introduced in this volume, including a wonderfully conniving evil queen and her brutal ruler son, who provide even more complications as the hero tries to save not only his people, but ultimately the world. An unexpected ally also joins the group in the quest to stop the rapidly spiralling destruction and bring to consciousness the gods that have abandoned the world. A rousing tale of courage against odds, of desire versus duty, of ambition and corruption - adventure on a grand scale, along with the wonderful characters and interactions we have come to expect from Cole. Adrenalin-rousing episodes lead towards the awe-ful finale at Hadinland, where Safar plays out the final confrontation with fiery forces of evil and a resolution with Protarus. As an aside, I would recommend the British version of this book, which has additional scenes that do not appear in the slightly shorter American edition. An exciting, recommended series.

The Knights Templars

The Knights Templars
Harun Yahaya | 2003-01-01 00:00:00 | | 225 | Occultism
The Templars were a shadowy medieval cult proscribed by a joint decision of the King of France and the Pope. It was originally founded to fight for Christianity, but over time_as the Templars acquired immense power, adopted heretical teachings, and established a capitalist system based on material gain, their order fell afoul of the Church. After being dispersed, the cult survived underground.

The Templars developed a fierce opposition to the Church and the divine religions in general, and eventually turned into the organization we know as the Freemasons. The Masons̢۪ antireligious philosophy and involvement in revolutions and political movements is a consequence of their Templars ancestry. This book examines the secret history of this Templar/Masonic organization and some of its influences on recent world and Turkish history.

Proof and Disproof in Formal Logic is a lively and entertaining introduction to formal logic providing an excellent insight into how a simple logic works. Formal logic allows you to check a logical claim without considering what the claim means. This highly abstracted idea is an essential and practical part of computer science. The idea of a formal system-a collection of rules and axioms, which define a universe of logical proofs-is what gives us programming languages and modern-day programming. This book concentrates on using logic as a tool: making and using formal proofs and disproofs of particular logical claims. The logic it uses-natural deduction-is very small and very simple; working with it helps you see how large mathematical universes can be built on small foundations. The book is divided into four parts: Part I "Basics" gives an introduction to formal logic with a short history of logic and explanations of some technical words. Part II "Formal Syntactic Proof" show you how to do calculations in a formal system where you are guided by shapes and never need to think about meaning. Your experiments are aided by Jape, which can operate as both inquisitor and oracle. Part III "Formal Semantic Disproof" shows you how to construct mathematical counterexamples to shoe that proof is impossible. Jape can check the counterexamples you build. Part IV " Program Specification and Proof" describes how to apply your logical understanding to a real computer science problem, the accurate description and verification of programs. Jape helps, as far as arithmetic allows. Aimed at undergraduates and graduates in computer science, logic, mathematics and philosophy, the text includes reference to and exercises based on the computer software package Jape, an interactive teaching and research tool designed and hosted by the author that is freely available on the web.

Death Receptors and Cognate Ligands in Cancer (Results and Problems in Cell Differentiation)

Death Receptors and Cognate Ligands in Cancer (Results and Problems in Cell Differentiation)
Holger Kalthoff | 2009-10-02 00:00:00 | Springer | 280 | Internal Medicine

Death receptors play a central role in directing apoptosis in mammalian cells. This process of active cell death is important for a number of biological processes, e.g. for the regulation of the immune system. Death receptors are cell surface receptors that transmit apoptotic signals initiated by corresponding death ligands. Many complex signaling pathways are activated and apoptosis is the final result of a complex biochemical cascade of events.

Besides their role in the induction of cell death, evidence now exists that death receptors are able to activate several non-apoptotic signaling pathways which, depending on cellular context, may lead to apoptosis resistance, secretion of pro-inflammatory proteins, proliferation and invasive growth of cancer cells.

This book looks at the molecular basis of death receptor signaling and the role of death receptors in cancer development.

Graphs & Digraphs, Third Edition

Graphs & Digraphs, Third Edition
Gary Chartrand | 1996-08-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 432 | Algorithms
This is the third edition of the popular text on graph theory. As in previous editions, the text presents graph theory as a mathematical discipline and emphasizes clear exposition and well written proofs. New in this edition are expanded treatments of graph decomposition and external graph theory, a study of graph vulnerability and domination, and introductions to voltage graphs, graph labelings, and the probabilistic method in graph theory.
Reviews
While I won't argue that the book is thorough and professional, I find it lacking enough examples to let me comprehensively understand the material. In many books, the author will introduce a concept and then give examples to cement the application of these concepts within the chapter text and/or figures. Chartrand and Lesniak use such examples very sparingly, and often for the more mundane concepts that need no additional illustration. In the first few chapters, where a great amount of terminology is introduced, these examples would have been extremely useful to ensure that the reader has a firm grasp on the basics. Instead, I found myself confused in later chapters because I had misunderstood one of the more fundamental concepts. I rarely, if ever, have this problem with a book includes sufficient examples.

While those more versed in graph theory might prefer a book with less example "fluff", someone just getting into the topic really should look elsewhere to ensure themselves a more stable and confident foundation.
Reviews
This was the one book assigned for a class where I did NOT have to go out and buy a few other books in order to round out the assigned text. Chartrand has written books on graph theory directed at students of many different levels, and this one is advanced -- but the keynote attribute of this book its thoroughness and accuracy. The proofs depend upon appropriate use of accurate definitions, and here the definitions are VERY clear and specific -- therefore in constructing the proofs in the exercises the student really comes to understand the meaning of the definitions and the concepts they describe. At first I thought this book was going to be unapproachable because it does not kill you with friendly banter, but I have come to appreciate its solid approach and trustworthiness not to lead anyone astray mathematically. By the way, graph theory is really fun. Don't pass us the chance to study it!

Large-Eddy Simulation for Acoustics (Cambridge Aerospace Series)

Large-Eddy Simulation for Acoustics (Cambridge Aerospace Series)
Claus Wagner,Thomas Hüttl,Pierre Sagaut | 2007-01-15 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 470 | Engineering
Noise pollution around airports, trains, and industries increasingly attracts environmental concern and regulation. Designers and researchers have intensified the use of large-eddy simulation (LES) for noise reduced industrial design and acoustical research. This book, written by 30 experts, presents the theoretical background of acoustics and of LES, followed by details about numerical methods, e.g. discretization schemes, boundary conditions, coupling aspects. Industrially relevant, hybrid RANS/LES techniques for acoustic source predictions are presented in detail. Many applications are featured ranging from simple geometries for mixing layers and jet flows to complex wing and car geometries. Selected applications include recent scientific investigations at industrial and university research institutions. Presently one can't offer perfect solution methodologies that address all relevant applications, however the book presents a state of the art collection of methods, tools and evaluation methodologies. The advantages and weaknesses of both the commercial and the research methodologies are carefully presented.

The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt

The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt
Richard H. Wilkinson | 2003-05-26 00:00:00 | | 0 | History
I agree with the other reviewers - beautifully illustrated, mostly in full color. It is comprehensive yet particularly the first half of the book is easy to read in it's entirety. The first part of the book covers general concepts of Egyptian Religion and the deities. The second covers individual deities in detail.
I had been looking for a book on Ancient Egyptian religion and deities which was neither outdated in its ideas, nor sterile or boring, nor full of fluff, nor overwhelmed with dense detail, nor assumed detailed prior knowledge of anthropology, archeology or African/Near Eastern history and religion. This book is it. It is beautifully clear and explains how Egyptian views of each deity changed over time. It clearly presents for each deity what syncretism occurred (merging with other gods or the adoption of other gods' attributes) with time. It contains some of the most recent thinking on how the Egyptians might have viewed their own deities. My only minor negative would be that there are no references or footnotes in the text itself for the expert. However, within the body of the text, the author does mention which academics advanced which important concepts and coupled with the extensive and detailed bibliography arranged by subject matter at the end of the book, this minor gripe is assuaged.

Imaging Atlas of the Pelvic Floor and Anorectal Diseases

Imaging Atlas of the Pelvic Floor and Anorectal Diseases
Mario Pescatori,Francisco Sérgio Pinheiro Regadas,Sthela Maria Murad Regadas,Andrew Paul Zbar,Clive I. Bartram,Robert D. Madoff | 2008-09-17 00:00:00 | Springer | 240 | Colorectal

The goal of this atlas, edited and authored by internationally respected experts in the field, is to clearly and precisely present indications, techniques, limitations, sources of errors, and pitfalls of diverse imaging modalities. The text describes the abundant, high-quality images that show the normal anorectal anatomy as well as the pathological appearance of the all-too-common large-bowel and pelvic floor functional diseases. The use of radiopaque markers in diagnosing colonic inertia; defecography, 3D US, and MRI in investigating obstructed defecation; 3D US and MRI in differentiating between benign and malignant anorectal neoplasms; CT and MRI in assessing pelviperineal anatomy and identifying pelvic tumors and inflammatory processes; and 2D-3D US in determining appropriate treatment for fecal incontinence are discussed in depth. This atlas demonstrates the value of a team approach between colorectal surgeons and radiologists for solving complex clinical disorders of the anorectum and PF.

Akhenaten: The Heretic King

Akhenaten: The Heretic King
Donald B. Redford | 1984-01-01 00:00:00 | Princeton University Press | 270 | History
The author portrays Akhenaten more as an atheist than a monotheist. A striking portrait is an outline of this fascinating 'worshiper of the sun', who is also one of the best known pharaohs. A good overview is provided of the Akhenaten Temple Project. Some of the author's comments are amusing which makes the book more enjoyable especially through the 'dry' moments. The book contains a short glossary, suggested readings, and many black and white illustrations and drawings. It is recommended for the open-minded lay person.
