Dynamics of the Mammalian Sperm Head: Modifications and Maturation Events From Spermatogenesis to Egg Activation (Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology)

Dynamics of the Mammalian Sperm Head: Modifications and Maturation Events From Spermatogenesis to Egg Activation (Advances in Anatomy, Embryology and Cell Biology)
Kiyotaka Toshimori | 2009-06-18 00:00:00 | Springer | 98 | Urology

Mammalian spermatozoa have complex structures. The structure-function relationship of sperm has been studied from various viewpoints. Accumulated evidence has shown that the sperm components undergo sequential changes from the beginning of spermatogenesis to the time of fertilization/embryogenesis. Structural analyses have been performed using various new techniques of light and electron microscopy as well as immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry in combination with specific probes such as antibodies against sperm components. Recently developed gene-manipulation techniques have accelerated investigations on the events that govern the relationship between the structure and molecular components of sperm. In addition, animal models with gene manipulations have been shown to exhibit various morphological and functional abnormalities that lead to infertility.

In humans, male infertility is caused by a number of factors such as the external environment, nutrient changes, genotoxins, and mutagens. These factors affect not only the development of germ cells during spermatogenesis but also the functions of mature sperm, ultimately impairing fertilization or embryogenesis. Typical phenotypes of impaired fertilization or embryogenesis are visible in conditions such as azoospermia, oligozoospermia, and teratozoospermia, which have been induced in model animals with gene deficiencies. Thus, comparative analyses of the phenotypes expressed by model animals carrying gene mutations and infertile human patients should be performed in relation to the normal (natural) fertilization process to clarify the etiology of infertility due to male factors.

In this book, I discuss the events that occur in the normal sperm head and govern the structure-function relationship from the time of spermatogenesis to that of fertilization or egg activation. In this regard, I describe dynamic modifications and maturation events occurring in sperm-head components and compare the outcomes of these events with the outcomes of their failure.

he Dialect of the Tribe: Speech and Community in Modern Fiction

he Dialect of the Tribe: Speech and Community in Modern Fiction
Oxford University Press | 1987-01-01 00:00:00 | | 1 | Languages (Other)
The bold careers of Henry James, D.H. Lawrence, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett--writers with profoundly unsettled cultural identities--spark Margery Sabin's investigation of values carried through inherited forms of speech. The Dialect of the Tribe offers fresh readings of such great novels as The Golden Bowl, Women in Love, Ulysses, and the Beckett trilogy which illustrate how complex attitudes toward the speech forms of language inform the most varied social, psychological, and aesthetic structures in modern fiction. Sabin explores the powerful tension in these writers between appreciation for the resources of common speech in English and contrary longings for a freedom associated with abstraction, system, and foreign or private language. Her own critical procedures transcend restrictive and reductive polarizations, as she lucidly analyzes the biases of both the Anglo-American critical tradition and the challenge to that tradition in French literary theory and practice.

Written in a jargon-free, accessible style, The Dialect of the Tribe argues that the ambiguous cultural positions of the great modern novelists in English emerge as a major source of their strength--the rich traditions of the English language give enlivening power to writers also remarkable for their drive toward radical independence and skepticism.

Information Security : Principles and Practice

Information Security : Principles and Practice
| 2005-10-26 00:00:00 | | 0 | Information Security

Your expert guide to information security

As businesses and consumers become more dependent on complex multinational information systems, the need to understand and devise sound information security systems has never been greater. This title takes a practical approach to information security by focusing on real-world examples. While not sidestepping the theory, the emphasis is on developing the skills and knowledge that security and information technology students and professionals need to face their challenges. The book is organized around four major themes:
* Cryptography: classic cryptosystems, symmetric key cryptography, public key cryptography, hash functions, random numbers, information hiding, and cryptanalysis
* Access control: authentication and authorization, password-based security, ACLs and capabilities, multilevel and multilateral security, covert channels and inference control, BLP and Biba's models, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems
* Protocols: simple authentication protocols, session keys, perfect forward secrecy, timestamps, SSL, IPSec, Kerberos, and GSM
* Software: flaws and malware, buffer overflows, viruses and worms, software reverse engineering, digital rights management, secure software development, and operating systems security

Additional features include numerous figures and tables to illustrate and clarify complex topics, as well as problems-ranging from basic to challenging-to help readers apply their newly developed skills. A solutions manual and a set of classroom-tested PowerPoint(r) slides will assist instructors in their course development. Students and professors in information technology, computer science, and engineering, and professionals working in the field will find this reference most useful to solve their information security issues.

An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

An Instructor Support FTP site is also available.

An Excellent Companion to Bishops Book
While Matt Bishop's book (Computer Security, Art and Science) is considered the standard by many professors, I think students will find that Mark Stamp's book provides much more practical utility. Here's what Stamp has that Bishop doesn't:

1.) More readable writing style.

2.) Non-essential theory and rigor removed.

3.) Some less traditional but interesting topics (ex: CAPTCHAs, DRM).

A few things that Bishop has that Stamp doesn't:

1.) Broader range of topics covered.

2.) Classic proofs and theory that Stamp omits for succinctness.

Let's be clear though. One text is not better than the other-- the authors simply have different aims. I suggest that a student use Stamp's book to ease into Information Security, and then to go Bishop when more information is required. For example, in my introductory course to Information Assurance, I used Stamp's book to answer 90% of all questions quickly and completely and Bishop's book to tackle the remaining 10%. If I ever get into the theory side of IA, I'll probably have to use Bishop more, but Stamp works great in most situations.

Cryptography
Great buy.

But i must warn you, its very advanced!

I used this as my text, in a graduate class, It was very helpful because my professor was able to explain the `hard stuff` to me.

But its good, it sets the 'motion' for research on topics discussed in the book.

Good, Readable Primer on Information Security
This is a very readable primer on information security that address a number of topics including symmetric key crypto, public key crypto, hash functions, cryptanalysis, authentication, authorization, software anomalies, software insecurity, malware, and operating systems. I recommend this book.

User review
A very well written book!
If I had to have only one book on information security, this would be the book!

Without trying to be encyclopedic, Professor Stamp gives a panoramic view of four key areas in information security: cryptography, access control, protocols, and software. Within each of these four parts, relevant and diverse topics are discussed and studied. The breadth and depth of coverage is appropriate for both the general reader as well as for the expert.

Topics in the book include: symmetric key crypto, public key crypto, hash functions, cryptanalysis, authentication, authorization, authentication protocols, real-world security protocols, software flaws and malware, insecurity in software, operating systems and security.

The book reads well and does not have the `dry flavor`, so often found in other books of this type. I recommend this book, without reservation!

Excellent security text
Dr. Stamp touches many of the widely used and implemented security algorithms and techniques in today's industry. His clear and concise diagrams, examples, and thought provoking questions allow the reader to get a clear overview of the workings (positive and negative) of security technology. Mark Stamp has gathered all relevant information from a wide range of sources to produce an essential guide for information security. totally sweet

The Risk Society at War: Terror, Technology and Strategy in the Twenty-First Century

The Risk Society at War: Terror, Technology and Strategy in the Twenty-First Century
Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen | 2007-01-15 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 232 | Military
In the globalised world of the twenty-first century, security policy in Western societies is driven by a wish to prevent future threats from becoming reality. Applying theories of 'risk society' to the study of strategy, this book analyses the creation of a new approach to strategy. The author demonstrates that this approach creates new choices for policy-makers and challenges well-established truths within the study of security and strategy. He argues that since the seventeenth century the concept of strategy has served to rationalise new technologies, doctrines and agents. By outlining the history of the concept of strategy in terms of rationality, Rasmussen presents a framework for studying strategy in a time of risk and uses this framework to analyse how new technologies of war, pre-emptive doctrines, globalisation and the rise of the 'terrorist approach to warfare' can formulate a new theory of strategy.
Reviews
In the twenty-first century people in Western societies are more secure than ever in history. But the standards by which we measure our safety have changed in a fundamental way. In The Risk Society at War Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen depicts the emerging dangers in a globalising world. New threatening actors are appearing. Non- state acors with a different set of values and a different rationality are the new kids in town. The Cold War was waged in a rational means-end framework. Technological innovations, new actors seem to challenge the traditional strategic environment of the Western powers. Rasmussen explores in a highly theoretical way this change in warfare. But in the end you have got a fairly good impression of the new doctrines governing the use of armed force. Strategy is no longer a question of definitely defeating the enemy, total victory is not possible. Strategy is about managing risks and acknowledging that eliminating one risk can cause other unexpected boomeranging effects. Rasmussen wrote an illuminating theoretical analysis of modern warfare. You better be aware of it!!

Libraries, Translations, and 'Canonic' Texts: The Septuagint, Aquila and Ben Sira in the Jewish and Christian Traditions (Supplements to the Journal for the Study of Judaism)
Giuseppe Veltri | 2006-03-01 00:00:00 | Brill Academic Publishers | 290 | History of Religion
The book deals with the field of decanonization of ancient traditions by the technique of deconstructing their original context; in particular: the process of canonization of the Greek Torah in Jewish-Hellenistic and Christian tradition and its decanonization in Rabbinic literature; the use and abuse of the translation(s) of Aquila in Patristic and Rabbinic literature and the substitution of Aquila by Onkelos in Babylonian academies; the decanonization of the book of Ben Sira in Rabbinic literature. On the basis of his analysis, the author concludes that, if a canon is the ability of a text to produce and authorize commentary deconstructing its original context by generalization, de-canonization is the inverse way of contextualizing a 'canonical' text by reconstructing the supposed original context.

Understanding Dance

Understanding Dance
Graham McFee | 1992-04-10 00:00:00 | Routledge | 352 | Dance
This important book examines the aesthetics of dance. Philosophically rigorous, appropriately introductory, and genuinely focused, Understanding Dance provides comprehensive coverage of all the main areas surrounding dance. Features include an examination of both U.K. and U.S. ballet companies and a look at the work of critics on both sides of the Atlantic.
Reviews
Graham McFee has written a tremendous book on the aesthetics of dance. His discussion goes on for roughly 350 pages yet rarely becomes repetitive or obtuse. Much has been written on the aesthetics of many other art forms both high and low--music, painting, and architecture, for instance--even though most of us freely acknowledge that what makes these art forms wonderous and human is impossible to explain in plain language. Why are we moved by melody, drawn in my a painting, or surprised by a great building? It's possible to discuss these questions but not to pin down the answers. The wonderful thing is how these discussions become more pleasurable rather than less so because they have no definite end.

In this vein, McFee's lengthy book on the aesthetics of dance is not conclusive. Yet while McFee never pins down exactly why humans dance and enjoy watching others dance, he firmly nails down components of the answer that enrich and enliven thought and discussion on the subject of dance.

"Understanding Dance" is not a practical guide to how to watch and quantify particular dance performances. There is no glossary, and you won't find a chart explaining the differences between jazz, tap, modern, and ballet dance styles. Still, its unique approach makes it a worthwhile and memorable read both for people deep in the world of dance and also for people just getting their feet wet. Rather than being full of jargon and dancing fundamentals, this book takes a broad and high approach to the subject of dance. You won't learn the difference between a pirouette and a grand jeté, but you will understand much more deeply why it is so pleasurable and inspiring to watch a ballet troupe (or any group of dancers) perform.
Reviews
". . . one of a very few comprehensive studies of dance by a serious philosopher, and he explores a wide range of important philosophical issues, from the identity of works of art in dance to the nature of crtitical reasoning." -- from my review for the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Vol. 51 (Fall 1993), pp. 644-666.

Best of Henry Kuttner

Best of Henry Kuttner
Henry Kuttner | 1975-01-01 00:00:00 | | 327 | Fiction
Kuttner is one of the best sci fi writers ever. Died too soon in 1958. He and his wife, CL Moore, colloborated on many great stories, including Mimsy. Check out her stories as well. Too bad he left us so soon, a real tragedy (and unknown) to sci fi literature.

Woth it for Mimsy alone; however the other stories are a bonus. 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wade; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe." Lewis Carroll "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" is on tape and even on vinyl at one time. It can also be found in some of Henry Kuttner books. It is a small sci-fi story about a formula that allows you into an alternate universe that everyone used to have access to. The problem with getting there is that it requires a different paradigm and a formula. The paradigm requires a mindset that diapers as we get older and the formula is in front of us if we know where to look. An added plus is that the tape version is read to us enthusiastically by William Shatner. Playing around with time travel he needed something to put into the cube. He chose some of his old toys. The box never came back. After trying for a second time with no success he gave up and moved on. The Last Mimzy (Widescreen Infinifilm Edition)
Summary: A Forgotten Master Rating: 5

Henry Kuttner was a master of thoughtful, humorous and bitter scifi. He was so prolific that he used at least 5 pen names, including Lewis Padgett. My all time favorite story is "Mimsy Were The Borogroves". If that story doesn't give you shudders, then you are no longer alive. His stuff was well written, well plotted and wonderfully presented. If you have never read Kuttner, I envy you. Reading him for the first time is an amazing experience. Please get this book, in whatever form you can.

If you want the best all-around collection of Henry Kuttner short stories, this is the book for you. This collection includes: "Mimsy Were the Borogroves"; "The Twonky"; "What You Need"; "Two-Handed Engine"; "The Proud Robot"; "The Misguided Halo"; "The Voice of the Lobster"; "Exit the Professor"; "A Gnome There Was"; "The Big Night"; "Nothing but Gingerbread Left"; "The Iron Standard"; "Cold War"; "Or Else"; "Endowment Policy"; "Housing Problem"; and "Absalom." My favorite story was "What You Need" just because the idea behind it was so clever and, too, because I love the classic Twilight Zone episode that was based on it. This collection also includes a very good introduction by Ray Bradbury titled "Henry Kuttner: A Neglected Master" written in 1974, which offers insights as to why Kuttner was not lauded critically the way that Orwell, Vonnegut, Heinlein and Wells were. It also says a lot about Bradbury himself, at a time when he was at the height of his powers. The short stories in this collection first appeared between 1939 and 1955 in magazines like Astounding Science Fiction, Thrilling Wonder Stories, Amazing Stories, Unknown, and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, and as such, they offer a glimpse of what those magazines were like at that time. It was an era when a writer could actually make a living writing short stories. As such, this book is a pearl of wisdom and history, and it should not be forgotten. Stacey

Reviews
Are you interested in soccer and think you'd enjoy playing? It's exciting when you learn to play a sport and even more exciting when you get on a team with other kids you'll play with for an entire season. It's Eric's "first day at soccer practice." He's probably a bit nervous, but he is prepared. He put on his special soccer shoes, his shin guards and has pulled up his big socks over the guards. His new coach, Mr. Smith, has gathered his new team around him and told them all three very special and important rules: "Play your best, play fair, and play without using your hands or arms-unless you are the goalie!" All the boys and girls are listening carefully and are excited about the upcoming season.

Coach Smith has all kinds of things to tell them about. He shows them how to warm up in order to get their "muscles ready," he shows them how to stretch to "keep [them] from getting hurt" and then shows them some basic soccer skills. His instruction includes showing them how to properly pass the ball, telling them who they should pass to in a game, showing them how to dribble by using cones and having them try to kick some goals. He also says that "it's more important to try your best and have fun." After the instruction, Eric and his new teammates play a game. Being a team player and learning to play soccer was going to be fun!

This is an excellent introduction not only to the game of soccer, but also to reading. This is a level one, "Beginning to read" book. There are full color photographs illustrating the game and its needed skills, equipment and action shots of a game in action. This book, along with some soccer equipment, would be a perfect gift for a youngster interested in the sport. It won't hurt to nudge him or her into a bit of reading at the same time!

The Art of Scandal: Modernism, Libel Law, and the Roman a Clef (Modernist Literature & Culture)

The Art of Scandal: Modernism, Libel Law, and the Roman a Clef (Modernist Literature & Culture)
Sean Latham | 2009-04-23 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 224 | British
The Art of Scandal advances a relatively simple claim with far-reaching consequences for modernist studies: writers and readers throughout the early twentieth century revived the long-despised codes and habits of the roman à clef as a key part of that larger assault on Victorian realism we now call modernism. In the process, this resurgent genre took on a life of its own, reconfiguring the intricate relationship between literature, celebrity, and the law.

Sean Latham summons cases of the novel's social notoriety-and the numerous legal scandals the form provoked-to articulate the material networks of reception and circulation through which modernism took shape, revealing a little explored popular history within its development. Producers as well as consumers used elements of the controversial roman à clef, a genre that challenges the idea of fiction as autonomous from the social and political world. In turn, this widespread practice provoked not only a generative aesthetic crisis, but also a gradually unfolding legal quandary that led Britain's highest courts to worry that fiction itself might be illegal. Modernism sat squarely, for a time, between literature and the law.

With skillful close readings aided by extensive archival research, Latham illuminates the world of backbiting, gossip, litigation, and sensationalism through chapters on Oscar Wilde's trial, Joyce's Ulysses, celebrity salons, and Parisian bohemia. Original, colorful, and perceptive, The Art of Scandal both salvages the reputation of the roman à clef form and traces its curious itinerary through the early twentieth century.

Seeking out the best new interdisciplinary work, this series explores the cultural bearings of literary modernism across multiple fields, geographies, symbolic forms, and media.

If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways

If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways
Daniel Quinn | 2007-01-02 00:00:00 | Steerforth | 208 | Non-fiction
In Ishmael, Daniel Quinn offered new ways of seeing and understanding human history, and our collective future. His message was transformative for millions of people, and Ishmael continues to attract tens of thousands of new readers each year. Subsequent works, such as The Story of B and My Ishmael, expanded upon his insights and teachings, but only now does he finally tackle the one question he has been asked hundreds of times but has never taken on: "How do you do what you do?" In If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways Quinn elucidates for readers the methods behind his own thought processes, challenging and ultimately empowering them to view the world for themselves in creative, perhaps even revolutionary ways.

If They Give You Lines Paper, Write Sideways also includes Quinn's never-before-published essays "The New Renaissance" and "Our Religions." There is a scientific consensus that global warming is approaching a tipping point beyond no return faster than had previously been predicted. Quinn has long portrayed humans as "a species of beings, which, while supposedly rational, are destroying the very planet they live on." So what are we to do? There has never been a plan for the future - and there never will be. But something extraordinary will happen in the next two or three decades; the people of our culture will learn to live sustainably - or not. Either way, it will be extraordinary. The sooner we understand this reality, the greater the chances that human society will transform itself so that the human race might have a future.
