Inequalities from Complex Analysis (Carus Mathematical Monographs)

Inequalities from Complex Analysis (Carus Mathematical Monographs)
John P. D'Angelo | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | The Mathematical Association of America | 280 | Mathematics
Inequalities from Complex Analysis is a careful, friendly exposition of some rather interesting mathematics. The author begins by defining the complex number field; he gives a novel presentation of some standard mathematical analysis in the early chapters. The development culminates with some results from recent research literature. The book provides complete yet comprehensible proofs as well as some surprising consequences of the results. One unifying theme is a complex variables analogue of Hilbert's seventeenth problem. Numerous examples, exercises and discussions of geometric reasoning aid the reader. The book is accessible to undergraduate mathematicians, as well as physicists and engineers.
Reviews
When I took my first course in real analysis as a graduate student, it was painfully, (literally and figuratively) obvious that success in the course was largely due to an ability to understand and manipulate inequalities. Throughout my career in mathematics since then, this opinion has been repeatedly reinforced, as I have often had to rediscover an inequality in order to solve a math problem. Knowledge of inequalities has also been a fundamental part of my work in computer science, especially in the areas of computation theory and algorithm analysis.

Therefore, I can strongly recommend this book for people who either are planning on working in complex analysis or are working in complex analysis. Many of the most widely used inequalities are explained, presented and then proved. The chapter headings are:

*) Complex numbers

*) Complex Euclidean Spaces and Hilbert Spaces

*) Complex Analysis in Several Variables

*) Linear Transformations and Positivity Conditions

*) Compact and Integral Operators

*) Positivity Conditions for Real-Valued Functions

*) Stabilization and Applications

If you are just starting out in complex analysis or need a quick refresher after some time of neglect, this is a book that will serve your needs very well.

Democratic Drift: Majoritarian Modification and Democratic Anomie in the United Kingdom

Democratic Drift: Majoritarian Modification and Democratic Anomie in the United Kingdom
Matthew Flinders | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press | 325 | Non-fiction
Finally, democracy in the United Kingdom is currently drifting. The old rules do not appear to suit the new game, and yet the government continues to insist that the old rules still apply. The critical challenge for any future government, of any political complexion, will be to articulate a new form of constitutional morality with the capacity to clarify exactly what its reforms in the sphere of constitutional reform and democratic renewal are seeking to achieve.

The analysis offered in this book focuses on the evolution of democracy in the United Kingdom since the election of New Labour in 1997. However in order to achieve both depth and breadth this analysis is then located within the contours of much broader longitudinal and comparative analyses. This involves examining the trajectory of democracy in the United Kingdom from 1945 onwards, and then comparing this long-term view within a much broader comparative perspective to examine the degree to which recent developments in the United Kingdom fit within global democratic trends.

Complete Wireless Home Networking

Complete Wireless Home Networking
| 2003-06-12 00:00:00 | | 0 | Wireless Network

This book offers tips and tricks for finding the best equipment for your home networking project and then walks you through the wireless network setup that's right for you. The wireless market is expanding quickly. New standards, including high-speed 802.11a, and the emergence of other `no-new-wires` technologies, such as powerline, are making the home networking market a slightly confusing one for consumers. Connecting and using interoperable equipment from vendors including Linksys, Netgear, Intel, D-Link, and Proxim, among others, can be a genuine plug-and-play experience. Or it can lead to several days, or more, of confusing hang-ups. There are pitfalls to be sure, but they can be avoided with a little planning. This book can help. Looking toward the future, there are a host of new wireless standards coming out in the next two years. Should you wait for faster technology or jump in now? There are some ingenious ways being developed by manufacturers to make interoperable technologies work together (dual-mode wireless access points, for instance, that work with 802.11a and 802.11b), and you can always upgrade later. In a word, `jump.`

User review
Incomplete Wireless Home Networking
I gave this book a 1 star rating because there was no choice for less. I think it deserves no more the 1/2 star.

Lets start with the printing of the book itself. It looks like it was done in the author's basement on a broken down copier about to run out of toner. The printing on some of the pages was so faint that you had to strain your eyes to read it. Also the dozens of screenshots are so faint they are completely unreadable. In some of the shots there was barely any contrast between the shot and the white background of the page. Prentice Hall should be ashamed to put it's name on the covers of this book.

Now for the contents of the book. Yes, the author does state in the preface that it is not intended to be a wireless networking bible but he went too far in the opposite direction and made it too basic. He covers the hardware and it's installation fairly well but he ignores some of the software issues that can keep a network from working. For example, I could not find the word PING anywhere in the text. This is a very basic command that lets you know that you can communicate with another computer on the network, one of the first things you should try in setting up a network. Also the command IPCONFIG. He does mention this command briefly in it's simplest form but gives no hint of the useful parameters of this command such as IPCONFIG /ALL, /RELEASE, /RENEW and others. These are essential things you must try when things go wrong.

In my opinion, if you get a network working using this book alone it will be either by dumb luck or you have two brand new computers less than two days old. For me, I filed the copy I bought in the trash where it belongs.

I felt like the woman on the cover when I was done
Illustrations are the key! This book is just what I was looking for. The illustrations are the key to the effectiveness of this book - esp. b/c 98 is so hard to set up. Paul Heltzel does an amazing job of making this difficult task easy and - believe it or not - fun to do. If you have 98 and XP and are trying to set up a wireless network at home - THIS IS THE BEST BOOK ON THE MARKET!

Intermediate Accounting book was never delivered correctly. Instead the seller sent a wrong book. I added the complaint to the seller and they sent the same wrong book again. Now I have two books that I do not need.
Reviews
The shipping estimates given were ficticious. The textbook did not arrive timely, even with the "Expedited Mail" option.

I paid extra for quicker shipping and the shipping was still slow.
Reviews
The book was in excellent condition and packaged extremely well. Also, it arrived sooner than promised.
Reviews
This is my go-to financial accounting textbook. I bought it for an Intermediate Accounting class I was taking at a community college. I have since moved on to a Master's degree program where the book has been required several times. It is well-written and easy to read. If I ever have a financial accounting question. This is the book I turn to.
Reviews
I was very pleased with this purchase. There is just very minor highlighting in one chapter but otherwise it looks brand new. I will purchase again from the seller, most definitely should the need arise again.

Commercial Trusts in European Private Law

Commercial Trusts in European Private Law
Michele Graziadei | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 632 | Law
This book examines how fifteen legal systems of the European Union regulate relationships of trust, focusing in particular on asset management. Following the Common Core approach, legal systems are examined primarily through the discussion, by national reporters, of a series of hypothetical cases. The cases raise issues such as what happens to the client when the asset manager becomes bankrupt. There is a special focus on commercial applications such as collective investment, collective secured lending, pension funds, and securitisation.

The Official Patient's Sourcebook on Acne Rosacea: A Revised and Updated Directory for the Internet Age

The Official Patient's Sourcebook on Acne Rosacea: A Revised and Updated Directory for the Internet Age
James N. Parker M.D.,Philip M. Parker Ph.D. | 2002-07-01 00:00:00 | Icon Health Publications | 168 | Skin Ailments
This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to acne rosacea (also Acne Erythematosa; Adult Acne; Hypertrophic Rosacea; Rhinophyma; Rosacea), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on acne rosacea. Given patients' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). Hard-copy users of this sourcebook can type cited Web addresses directly into their browsers to obtain access to the corresponding sites. In addition to extensive references accessible via the Internet, chapters include glossaries of technical or uncommon terms.
Reviews
This book got off on the wrong foot for me on the front cover. Calling the disease Acne Rosacea is a step backwards for all. No one is really calling it acne rosacea anymore. It is different enough from acne that the moniker is just confusing. Further, treating it like acne may just be the worst thing you can do.

The book is more of a template for `generic health researching' than anything specific to rosacea. The information is of such a generic level that a sourcebook on the next medical topic is just a search and replace away.

I thought that I might get to see some new information, but alas I was disappointed. On Page 4 we read
"All too often, patients diagnosed with acne rosacea will log on the the Internet, type words into a search engine, and receive several Web site listings which are mostly irrelevant or redundant"

Sadly this is the opposite of what you find. The National Rosacea Society comes up as a PageRank of 1 on Google. As much as we chastise the NRS, they do provide a very good starting point. If people were to start their search at the #1 rosacea web site then they will be on the right track. I'm not sure the same can be said for this book.

Later they promise "a chapter dedicated to helping you find your peer groups". They end up only mentioning a prescription drug page at rosacea-control.com, CureZone and MedHelp (of which CureZone didn't mention rosacea at all, and MedHelp timed out). Again they never mention the NRS or the Rosacea Support Group. I could keep going - the section on books doesn't mention the best text we have, the pages of links doesn't mention the Open Directory Project Categories ...

The Guidelines chapter is too short to contain anything useful. They talk about "another type of rosacea called vascular rosacea" this statement left me wondering if they had any idea what they were saying. Surely just paraphrasing the standard classification for rosacea would have been ideal introduction, especially when you are unsure of the topic you are addressing.

The whole aim of the series of books seems to be to give you information that you can't find on the well known `rosacea internet'. I have to say from my reading of this book there are scant new resources worth noting.

In the end the authors would have done better to embrace what they knocked in the first few pages. A trip to google.com, drop the `acne' bit at from `acne rosacea' and surf the first few sites you find. After that you will be in front of this book, and have something else to do with your $USD 25.

The psychological defenses of man, which prevent him from facing his fears and thus changing his destructive behavior, are also identified and explained. In conclusion, Dr. Marshall maintains that woman's quest must not be for equality with man, but instead for control of his destructive nature if the human species is to avoid extinction.

Metal Forming Analysis

Metal Forming Analysis
R. H. Wagoner,J.-L. Chenot | 2001-05-07 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 390 | Engineering
Numerical methods, particularly finite element (FE) analysis, are being used increasingly to optimize product design and deal with problems in metal forging, rolling, and extrusion processes. Metal Forming Analysis describes the latest and most important numerical techniques for simulating metal-forming operations. The first part of the book describes principles and procedures and includes numerous examples and worked problems. The remaining chapters focus on applications of numerical analysis to specific forming operations. Most of these results are drawn from the authors' research in the areas of metal testing, sheet metal forming, forging, extrusion, and similar operations. Sufficient information is presented so that readers can understand the application of the nonlinear finite element method to forming problems without a prior background in structural finite element analysis.

User review
It is mostly a list of functions with too few examples.
Having used the Mathematica book index for years now,

I know how it should be done. This isn't it,,.

It lists the functions, but gives no example form for them.

If you know MatLab, the help window is more use

than this book. A starter book not really worth

the price.

User review
Quick and compact Matlab book
This is a very good reference. It is also very suitable for people starting in Matlab. Also the book has a very nice format, namely small and thin. In passing, I showed the book to a collegue with a Matlab question and he wanted to have a copy for himself. I can also recommend it for students.

User review
Great for the beginner of MATLAB
Great book at introducing MATLAB. If you are an ABSOLUTE beginner in programming with MATLAB this book is a must. It answers practically all the questions a beginner would have and shows you where to go if you need additional information.

User review
Wonderful matlab reference
Excellent text. Contains nice, brief summaries of matlab functionality, with references on where to go to get more verbose explanations. This book is about the size of a postcard. When I need to locate or discover a new function that I'm sure matlab has somewhere, this Primer is usually more effective than the matlab on-line help. Also good for an overview of functionality, an area where Matlab's on-line help is particularly weak. Assumes no knowledge of matlab.

In MATLAB, really the only thing you need is a list of commands, then you can type 'help command' and be done. Sigmon's book is just this. Good enough to carry me through undergrad to first year grad school. Next year I'll need a reference specializing in the controls toolkit, but this Primer will still be glued to my hand whenever I start Matlab. I'm buying one for each of my students.

Computer Telephony Integration, Second Edition

Computer Telephony Integration, Second Edition
| 2002-12-17 00:00:00 | | 0 | VoIP/IP Telephony

Since the publication of the first edition, the CTI world has changed significantly. Where it was once focused on the integration of voice systems with computers, the focus is now on IP-based voice, or converged networks and services. Today, the telcos are upgrading their systems from circuit-switched to IP-based packet-switched networks. Companies like Cisco Systems and Dow Chemical have installed IP-based phones in their offices worldwide, saving millions of dollars in service fees. Computer Telephony Integration, Second Edition has been updated to reflect these recent changes in the industry and will help managers make the right decisions for their communications infrastructure. It explains the business and economic significance of the major integrated data-voice technologies and highlights the pros and cons of each approach. The text covers convergence, telephony standards, new and powerful tools for call centers, IP telephony(VoIP), infrastructure management tools, and advanced business applications. In addition to the latest developments in standard CTI technologies such as IVR, voicemail, speech recognition, and applications, this edition includes expanded chapters on security, cost management, call center technology, and IP telephony. Case studies provide a real world perspective on many of the newest CTI technologies. Bringing together the author's extensive experience in the field, Computer Telephony Integration, Second Edition will help communications and IT professionals make efficient, cost-effective decisions that will lead to improved customer service, increased productivity, reduced costs, and enhanced workflow automation.

User review
Telephony 101
A re-organization in our company placed telecom services under the Administration Department. Not having a technical background, I was a bit concerned about my new operational and technical responsibilities. The world of Communications always seemed so complicated.

I found this book to be right on target. The concepts of CTI, Unified Messaging and especially implementation of telephony systems were clearly explained and logical. An unexpected chapter on cost management was extremely valuable in Operations. This is not a programming book but a very helpful resource to an individual making decisions on CTI/Telephony systems. There are plenty of examples and illustrations from real systems. The best part is that it was written in plain, easy-to-understand English. I tried to read telecommunications books many times but they were so technical they proved to be a great cure for insomnia.

This book covers traditional Telephony basics, security, management tools and even has an outline for an RFP for PBX and Voice Mail systems. It gives a view of tomorrow's technology providing negatives as well as the positives of new technology such as Voice over IP.

The only negative is that I wish the book were a little longer.

User review
Telephony Resources
I found this book to be practical and well written. It had a strong section on IVR, including a good discussion on application generators. CTI was covered, as well as standards and typical business uses. The call center reporting chapter was a little weak but the other chapters on VoIP, telephony implementation, call accounting and security overcame this limitation. Also, I like the author's writing style. He stays focused on the topic and makes good use of the book real estate.

Nicky Barr, an Australian Air Ace: A Story of Courage and Adventure

Nicky Barr, an Australian Air Ace: A Story of Courage and Adventure
Peter Dornan | 2005-10-28 00:00:00 | Allen & Unwin | 312 | Australian
This compelling personal account of an Australian World War II fighter pilot reveals the experiences of a man who earned a reputation among allies and enemies alike for his acts of bravery, his selflessness, his dogged determination, and an infectious sense of humor.

Reviews
Like the previous reviewer, I could hardly put this book down. It is an amazing story told in cinamgraphic detail. It would have been a good book written as fiction, but to know the stories are all true (I confirmed the outline with an RAAF offical obit) brings a part of WWII to life. Well done Peter Dornan, in taking in so much oral history and weaving it into a compelling story.
Reviews
Nicky Barr's life and the courage he showed, were almost too unblieveable to be true. His biography by Peter Dornan is wonderfully written and impossible to put down. Nicky Barr was a quiet, unassuming man, but a fierce, aggressive fighter to his enemy in battle, and a great friend to those who knew him. The reader will come away feeling like the latter.

His wife and true love, Dot, passed away in May 2006 and Nicky joined her in June.

Thanks to Peter Dornan, for allowing me to know them both!

Economy and Nature in the Fourteenth Century : Money, Market Exchange, and the Emergence of Scientific Thought (Cambridge Studies in Medieval Life and Thought)

Economy and Nature in the Fourteenth Century : Money, Market Exchange, and the Emergence of Scientific Thought (Cambridge Studies in Medieval Life and Thought)
Joel Kaye | 1998-02-13 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 285 | Economics
Intellectual developments pioneered by scholastic natural philosophers of the fourteenth century constituted a critical stage in the emergence of scientific thought. Beneath these technical developments lay a profound reconceptualization of nature. The purpose of this book is to analyze the components of this reconceptualization, and to speculate on the influences that shaped it. It argues that the transformation of the conceptual model of the natural world c. 1260-1380 was strongly influenced by the rapid monetization of European society during the same period.
Reviews
A fascinating study of the impact of economic change on medieval natural philosophy and theology. According to Kaye, competing economic models created tensions between a more theocentric world view and one that could accommodate the workings of an independent and self-regulating marketplace. He also provides fascinating insight into the attempts -- chiefly in France -- to revalue and control currency, which provided vivid examples to medieval observers of what can go wrong with misguided efforts to intervene in supply and demand. The Middle Ages appears surprisingly modern in this clearly written study, which should be of interest not only to scholars but to any intelligent reader interested in learning more about the beginnings of economic history.
Reviews
Intellectual historians have traditionally done a bad job at making connections between thinkers' thoughts and thinkers' environments. Kaye succeeds by pointing out economy's influence on philosphy. I am convinced.

Basic Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy, (Tutorial Chemistry Texts)

Basic Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy, (Tutorial Chemistry Texts)
J. Michael Hollas | 2002-08-30 00:00:00 | Royal Society of Chemistry | 192 | Chemistry
The main aim of this unique book is to introduce the student to spectroscopy in a clear manner which avoids, as far as possible, the mathematical aspects of the subject. It is thus intended for first or second year undergraduates, particularly those with minimal mathematics qualifications. After explaining the theory behind spectroscopy, the book then goes on to look at the different techniques, such as rotational, vibrational and electronic spectroscopy. It encompasses both high resolution (structural) and low resolution (analytical) spectroscopy, demonstrating their close interrelationship. The many worked problems make this book particularly appealing for independent study. Ideal for the needs of undergraduate chemistry students, Tutorial Chemistry Texts is a major new series consisting of short, single topic or modular texts concentrating on the fundamental areas of chemistry taught in undergraduate science courses. Each book provides a concise account of the basic principles underlying a given subject, embodying an independent-learning philosophy and including worked examples.

Understanding the Universe: From Quarks to the Cosmos

Understanding the Universe: From Quarks to the Cosmos
Don Lincoln | 2004-01-01 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 592 | Astronomy and Cosmology
The Big Bang, the birth of the universe, was a singular event. All of the matter of the universe was concentrated at a single point, with temperatures so high that even the familiar protons and neutrons of atoms did not yet exist, but rather were replaced by a swirling maelstrom of energy, matter and antimatter. Exotic quarks and leptons flickered briefly into existence, before merging back into the energy sea.
This book explains the fascinating world of quarks and leptons and the forces that govern their behavior. Told from an experimental physicist's perspective, it forgoes mathematical complexity, using instead particularly accessible figures and apt analogies. In addition to the story of quarks and leptons, which are regarded as well-accepted fact, the author who is a leading researcher at the world's highest energy particle physics laboratory also discusses mysteries on both the experimental and theoretical frontier, before tying it all together with the exciting field of cosmology and indeed the birth of the universe itself.

The text spans the tiny world of the quark to the depths of the universe with exceptional clarity. The casual student of science will appreciate the careful distinction between what is known (quarks, leptons and antimatter), what is suspected (Higgs bosons, neutrino oscillations and the reason why the universe has so little antimatter) and what is merely dreamed (supersymmetry, superstrings and extra dimensions). Included is an unprecedented chapter explaining the accelerators and detectors of modern particle physics experiments. The chapter discussing the hunt for the Higgs boson, currently consuming the efforts of nearly 1000 physicists, lends drama that only big-stakes science can give. Understanding the Universe leaves the reader with a deep appreciation of the fascinating particle realm and just how much it determines the rich beauty of our universe.

From Publishers Weekly
Lincoln, a high energy physicist at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), has an infectious love for physics. He also occasionally demonstrates a humorous writing style that successfully engages the reader. On the whole, however, his efforts to explain the basics of quantum physics to the lay reader do not succeed because the material he covers is often too complex to be presented in such a superficial manner, despite the book's 600-plus pages. Readers will be lost in a sea of subatomic particles-bosons, leptons, fermions, hadrons, gluons, baryons- and they'll be frustrated by the constant refrain that the material is complicated, but they can turn to the works in the bibliography for more detail. Lincoln does do a credible job of explaining some of the early history of physics, and he brings to life some of the excitement associated with multimillion-dollar physics experiments being done worldwide. He also touches on many of the unresolved mysteries of physics: why there appears to be so much more matter than antimatter, whether there are many more than three spatial dimensions and what constitutes the "missing" matter in the universe, to name just a few. By attempting to cover it all, Lincoln produces a very large but largely unsatisfying volume.

User review
Inaccuracies mar and otherwise fine book.
Although the sequence of information presented in this text is good, as a beginner to the peculiarities of PL/SQL I found that due to several inaccuries within the example code in the text made it much more difficult than it needed to be. I found at least two substantial chunks of code that failed to compile due to errors. I was able to download the sample code from the Apress website and see where the author had corrected the issues, but it was frustrating when I encountered this twice inside the first 100 pages!

Good organization and relatively good presentation although the humor probably doesn't come through in writing as well as it would in a classroom. All this being said - I'm using it daily right now as a reference source. It was worth purchasing!

User review
Very Well Written, with a Lot of Advice - Some will Force the DBA to Cringe
This book is very well written, with a couple minor problems which kept it from receiving a five star rating. The book takes the approach of here is how something works (with a detailed code example), here is a problem which needs to be solved using something similar to what you have just learned, and here is how I would write the solution for the problem. The book is easily read from cover to cover through the use of the author's humor, which seemed to dry up a bit half of the way through the book.

Comments about the book which I recorded as I read through, in no particular order:

* Page 282 suggests sticking to a standard set of VARCHAR2 column lengths, such as 2000 for comments (4000 for international). However, doing so may lead to excessive memory consumption problems as variable anchors are used in PL/SQL modules to declare variables.

* Testing and documentation are both demonstrated and stressed as necessary for the developer. The author states that roughly twice as much time should be spent testing a solution as the time required to code the solution.

* The author provides a brief description of basic SQL, just in case the author's advice of being comfortable with SQL was ignored.

* The book provides updated content for developers using Oracle 10g.

* Chapter titles appearing at the top of each page probably should have been labeled a little better to describe the contents of the chapter, rather than attempting to use a bit of witty humor for the chapter titles. This change would have made it easier to find a specific syntax example, although the index at the back of the book eliminates much of this being an issue.

* The author created a PL function in one of the early chapters of the book as a shorthand method of calling DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE, and this PL function was used in many of the later chapters of the book without indicating that PL is not a built-in PL/SQL function. There is a chance that this might cause some confusion for people who attempt to use the book for reference purposes, rather than as a book which should be read cover to cover.

* The author casually demonstrates a lot of good programming practices with Oracle databases, without drawing much attention to some of those good programming practices.

* The author stresses modularization of program processes, if the code will be used in more than one place, that code should be stored in a PL/SQL function or procedure. Unfortunately, without much caution, there is a chance that a developer will take that message to an extreme, coding all kinds of black box type procedures which then might be called in a for loop, repeatedly sending the same query to the database rather than sending the query once and storing the result (yes, this does happen with production code).

* Page 420 suggests creating a temporary table to store an intermediate result, using an example that if the table's average rowsize is 297 bytes, and only 13 bytes per row are needed, that the results should be placed into a temporary table to improve performance. The author stopped short of stating that the temporary tables should be created on the fly as needed, which would definitely not be a good suggestion.

Submitted to the publisher as errata:

The script on page 43, despite the description, the TO_NUMBER_OR_NULL function error handler does not catch errors when non-numeric values are passed into the function (such as the letter A). The author's code is only attempting to catch the exception INVALID_NUMBER, which is apparently insufficient on Oracle 10.2.0.4 - the author later indicated that he did not know why the code did not work when placed into a package, and modified the code to catch the PL/SQL error.

The script on page 94 references the column WORKER_TYPE_T.WORKER_TYPE_ID, but no such column exists when the tables are created using the scripts in the script library. The downloadable script library also contains the same error. The column listed in the script does not match the ERD diagram on page 27, which shows that the script should have referenced WORKER_TYPE_T.ID.

The script on page 119 references the column GENDER_T.GENDER_ID, but no such column exists when the tables are created using the scripts in the script library. The downloadable script library also contains the same error. The column listed in the script does not match the ERD diagram on page 27, which shows that the script should have referenced GENDER_T.ID.

The scripts which create the tables assume that the tablespace `USERS` exists in the database, but the book does not mention that such a tablespace needs to exist. Some of the columns listed in the tables created by the scripts are Oracle reserved words (SELECT * FROM V$RESERVED_WORDS ORDER BY KEYWORD;), which generally should be avoided as column names. The ERD diagram on page 27 shows a couple such reserved words (ID, NAME).

The scripts to create the tables/indexes in the database create the objects with odd extent sizes which will contribute to fragmentation in dictionary managed tablespaces, and poor full tablescan/fast full index scan performance. The scripts on pages 29-36 create objects with 10KB extent sizes, the scripts on pages 188-190 also create objects with 10KB extent sizes, another script created one or more objects with a 100KB extent size, while the script on pages 237-238 creates a table and an index with a 1MB extent size. All objects in a single tablespace should have the same extent size (unless they are in an Oracle controlled ASSM tablespace with auto controlled extent sizes), and the extent size should be a power of 2 - the extent size controls the maximum multi-block read size, so this needs to be considered as well.

The script on pages 159-160 is described as a plain old SQL solution, which was created in an effort to show that an all SQL solution (no PL/SQL) would out perform a PL/SQL solution. It did that, but just barely. The problem is that the plain old SQL solution calls 2 PL/SQL functions for each row inserted into the WORKER_T table. A pure SQL solution could have been constructed for this particular insert which would have better demonstrated the author's point.

On pages 266-268 the author attempts to force the Oracle optimizer to use an index access for a SQL statement containing `WHERE NAME LIKE '%DOE%'. The author stated that `the Optimizer is wrong` for selecting to use a full tablescan rather than an index type access, citing that the index type access would require the retrieval of about 1,080 4KB blocks to determine which table blocks to access, compared to the 5,500 4KB blocks during a full tablescan. On page 266 the author stated `Instead, it resorted to the worst of all options: a full table scan. Ouch!`. On page 268 the author stated `On the other hand, you're an intelligent programmer who is much more knowledgeable and can therefore consider things like physics.` The author fails to recognize that if the table's extent size were set at 1MB, with a 4KB block size, Oracle 10g R2 would have auto-set the db_file_multiblock_read_count to 256 (on earlier versions of Oracle the DBA could have set the same value). While the author's forced INDEX FULL SCAN was reading the 4KB blocks one at a time, the full tablescan would have been reading up to 256 blocks at a time, in roughly the same amount of time that it would have taken to fetch a couple blocks of the index from disk. The author's advice could put the developer reading this book at odds with a DBA who has read a couple performance tuning books and articles written by Oaktable Network members.

Buy It, I am not kidding
This is really a good book to learn PL/SQL. I had intermediate skills on SQL and was able to grasp the Pl/Sql quickly reading the book. The author explains the sample Pl / Sql code in nice, relaxed and organized way. I have one small advice for the author as well, `If possible please give the chapter name related to the contents'. After reading the book I was able to write some good Pl / Sql code with Package, Body and Stored Procedures. Author was successful to communicate with the reader in `Easy Mode'. I highly recommend this book if you some knowledge of SQL and 0 knowledge on Pl / Sql. Currently I am reading a book `SOA Using Java Web Services` by Mark D Hansen, which is completely opposite style of writing, I feel like author Hansen is dropping me off of an airplane without a parachute when its flying 50,000 feet above the ground.

A deep, thorough and quite enjoyable book on PL/SQL,,.
As an Oracle developer for over 10 years, I have read many Oracle books on a variety of topics, and this book is definitely one of those that stands heads above the others. As the title suggests, Beginning PL/SQL: From Novice to Professional covers a range of PL/SQL topics, both foundational and advanced. From the fundamentals such as triggers, procedures, packages, the book moves into the more advanced operations of Bulk Collection, Objects and even one of the more neglected but no less important areas in PL/SQL, unit testing. The topics in this book are delivered to the reader from a professional point of view in that all examples of the PL/SQL in the book are approached and designed as quality, production ready code. Topics such as design patterns, best practices and even some of the more insidious Oracle `gotchas` are discussed in this book, making it a wealth of information available to both the new as well as seasoned developer looking to update their PL/SQL knowledge. As a final bonus, this book packs all of this pertinent information in an refreshingly compact size with a breezy, fresh writing style. As one who has many a weighty computer tome where maybe 50% of the book has pertinent information and the rest is fluff, finding books where the fluff is removed are books to be treasured. If you are a PL/SQL developer of any level, beginner or veteran, this book is definitely one that should be turned to for information.

Law in Medieval Russia (Law in Eastern Europe)

Law in Medieval Russia (Law in Eastern Europe)
Ferdinand Feldbrugge | 2008-11-15 00:00:00 | Hotei Publishing | 334 | Russia
Much of what we know about the colourful Russian middle ages comes from legal sources: the treaties of Russian-Scandinavian warlords with the Byzantine emperors, the gradual penetration of Christianity and Byzantine institutions, the endless game of war and peace among the numerous regional princes, the activities of Hanseatic merchants in the wealthy city-republic of Novgorod, the curious relationships between the Mongol conquerors and Russian rulers and church dignitaries, etc. And, at the even further fringes of medieval Europe, there were the Christian kingdoms of Armenia and Georgia, squeezed between the Islamic empires of Iran and Turkey, but each possessing their elaborate and original legal systems. A discussion of more general questions of legal history and legal anthropology precedes the treatment of these various topics.
