Reviews
This book is an adequate representation of Dylan material, with many songs missing that one might want (forcing the purchase of a second book).

I didn't like this book for several reasons:
1. When I was first learning guitar, I purchased it and was dissapointed by Dylan's complex chord phrasings. I couldn't play them, and at the level of a beginner, there were only a few songs that I could play.

2. As I got better, I yearned to learn how to play the songs like Dylan played them. As this book was written primarily for piano and vocal, it only has the guitar chords, and many of his songs contain wonderfully complex fingerpicking patterns and arpegios. Once I got to the level of playing where I could play the chords appropriately, I wanted more than this book could give. I pulled it off the shelf recently to play a few of the oldies that I remembered from many years ago, but put it back quickly for the same reason.

3. The book has a standard binding, so if you want to lay it reasonably flat on your music stand or piano, you will have to split the spine.
Reviews
This is a wonderful songbook as a companion to the album "Under the Red Sky". The songs pic up where the travelling wilburys left off. Dylan is clearly having fun here. And the songs are as much fun to play as they are to listen to.

Experience and Knowledge Management in Software Engineering

Experience and Knowledge Management in Software Engineering
Kurt Schneider | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer; 1 edition | 270 | Computer Science
Nowadays, there is software everywhere in our life. It controls cars, airplanes, factories, medical implants. Without software, banking, logistics and transportation, media, and even scientific research would not function in the accustomed way. Building and maintaining software is a knowledge-intensive endeavour and requires that specific experiences are handled successfully. However, neither knowledge nor experience can be collected, stored, and shipped like physical goods, instead these delicate resources require dedicated techniques. Knowledge and experience are often called company assets, yet this is only part of the truth: it is only software engineers and other creative employees who will effectively exploit an organisation's knowledge and experience.

Kurt Schneider’s textbook is written for those who want to make better use of their own knowledge and experience – either personally or within their group or company. Everyone related to software development will benefit from his detailed explanations and case studies: project managers, software engineers, quality assurance responsibles, and knowledge managers. His presentation is based on years of both practical experience, with companies such as Boeing, Daimler, and Nokia, and research in renowned environments, such as the Fraunhofer Institute. Each chapter is self-contained, it clearly states its learning objectives, gives in-depth presentations, shows the techniques’ practical relevance in application scenarios, lists detailed references for further reading, and is finally completed by exercises that review the material presented and also challenge further, critical examinations. The overall result is a textbook that is equally suitable as a personal resource for self-directed learning and as the basis for a one-semester course on software engineering and knowledge management.

Reviews
An invaluable source of information, tips and study material to assist in preparing for the PMP exam.
Reviews
I decided to withhold my review of this book until after I had taken (and passed) the PMP exam. For my test prep I used 3 resources:

1) An online SkillSoft PMP preparation course (free for me through the Army e-learning program).

2) Joseph Phillip's PMP Project Management Professional Study Guild (2nd ed).

3) This book, which I actually paid $89.95 for at Barnes&Noble.

I would highly recommend the SkillSoft course and Joseph Phillip's book to anyone studying for the PMP exam (and the SkillSoft course would cover your 35 hours of class time requirement).

This book, however, is useless as a study tool. The coverage of the material is overly verbose and confusing (not to mention the annoyingly arrogant tone of the author), and the questions on the 'bonus' CD are definitely NOT representative of what you will find on the actual exam. The questions (and answer choices) seem deliberately worded to mislead and some of the 'correct' answers are just plain wrong.

Save your money, there are much better resources out there.

Deliberation, Participation and Democracy: Can the People Govern?

Deliberation, Participation and Democracy: Can the People Govern?
Shawn W. Rosenberg | 2007-12-15 00:00:00 | Palgrave Macmillan | 352 | Civics
Political participation is falling and citizen alienation and cynicism is increasing. In response to evidence of this decline in democracy, a growing number of philosophers and political practitioners have advocated a more deliberative form of democracy. This volume brings together the first work of this kind by leading scholars in the US and Europe. The results of this work raise questions regarding the conception and practice of deliberative democracy. To address these questions, four of the leading philosophers of deliberative democracy contribute their commentaries on the groundbreaking empirical research.

Spycraft: The Secret History of the CIA's Spytechs, from Communism to Al-Qaeda

Spycraft: The Secret History of the CIA's Spytechs, from Communism to Al-Qaeda
Robert Wallace,H. Keith Melton,Henry R. Schlesinger | 2009-05-26 00:00:00 | Plume | 576 | United States
In this the first book ever written about the CIA's Office of Technical Service, former director Robert Wallace (a real-life Q, straight out of the James Bond films) and internationally renowned intelligence historian H. Keith Melton offer an unprecedented look at the CIA's most secretive operations and the devices that made them possible. Against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions- including the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the current War on Terror-the authors show how the CIA carries out its missions employing amazingly inventive tools. Illustrated with images never before seen by the public-and featuring everything from micro cameras to wired kitties to exploding pancakes-Spycraft is both a fantastic encyclopedia of gadgetry and a revealing primer on the fundamentals of high-tech espionage.
Reviews
Interesting book covering (or recovering) some good details - but like many books of its ilk it expands the CIA element at the expense of the truth. The Penkovsky story while a great story is misleading. Penkovsky is as important as stated in the story except the Brits led that op and while he states that quickly he goes on to talk abou the involved individuals as if they were CIA when in fact they were Brits for the most part. As for the 64 find the CIA did not go looking for it and Navy CBs did not find it. It was discovered by three State Department engineers based on information from a defector that the CIA did not believe and kept locked in isolation for 2 years. I am sure there are other details that I am unaware of that are similar. But overall the book is a good read and covers a lot of bases in the tech world. i would recommend it but like all things intel - with a grain of salt.
Reviews
If you're unable to visit the Spy Museum in Washington, DC then this is the book for you. Filled with back-stories, techniques, and history this book takes you from the heady days of the beginning of the Cold War to the present day. Too, you'll learn just how valuable the the CIA has been in developing and implementing technologies that allowed the US to 'compete' in global clandestine information business. We're lucky that there were so many talented individuals willing to make such sacrifices for their country. Some lost their lives and are honored with a star at CIA HQ. A fine read for anyone.
Reviews
Lots of info in an easy to read, comprehend and remember format. Go for it!
Reviews
This is written by insiders and they had trouble getting permission from the CIA to publish it. It's a thick book, reasonably well written, but most compelling for the real inside view of the real world version of James Bond's Q. But stepping away from the fictional versions, you really understand the years of work it took, for example, to understand the Soviet Russian mail censorship and examination process, or the years of duty in Moscow for a handful of document passes. Dead drops, brush passes, the evolution of electronic bugs, the Leo Theremin-designed "Beast" in the US embassy in Moscow, the life of a tech bugging offices worldwide, and the history of document cameras are all well covered. Many topics are in this book and nowhere else.
Reviews
I can't believe they were allowed to write this book and reveal all those secrets.

Can you imagine all those secret weopons that we have that they're not authorized to reveal?

Policing Space: Territoriality and the Los Angeles Police Department

Policing Space: Territoriality and the Los Angeles Police Department
Steve Herbert | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | University of Minnesota Press | 194 | United States
Reviews
As a police officer, this book was disgusting. Obviously written by someone who hasn't seen a metropolitan city's guts for the last 20 years.

Written by somebody safe in the halls of academia, safe behind their computer screen. Try doing it longer than a "ride along", and see how your viewpoint is then.
Reviews
This work was insightful but it suffers from its largely anecdotal structure. Through the entire work, the author employs a "present a short scenario - analyze the short scenario" method. Though the author's analysis is commendable, his technique is rather tiring after a few chapters. However, if you are patient and seriously interested in the aspects of police patrol and territoriality, you should enjoy it... just be prepared for minor de ja vu.
Reviews
All I can say is that this is a wonderful book. I had to read it for his class (A fantastic professor as well) and it ended up being a pleasure to read. I couldn't put it down. It ia facinating and truthful look at the LAPD! I would recomend it to anyone who is interested in policing!
Reviews
Herbert, Steve. (1997). Policing Space. Territoriality and the Los Angeles Police Department. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press.
Here is a terrific book. I picked it up at Urban Center Books, started to read it on
the subway home, and couldn't put it down. It is pretty rare that I feel this about
any book in our field. Much of what I read seems an obligation rather than a
chosen pleasure. So I am writing this e-mail "Sounding" to encourage others to
get familiar with this book.

This is a short, intense book, probably Steve Herbert's dissertation rewritten into
this popular (but informing) version. It consists of a minimal amount of
introductory material, an exposition of "six `normative orders' central to the
structure of police organizations," and a brief coda titled "Making and Marking
Space with the LAPD." The interesting thing is that each of the six normative
orders" is elaborately played out in physical space.

You can imagine where Herbert is coming from given that an early subheading is
titled, "Weber, Foucault, and the Microgeopolitics of State Power." (13.) I'm not
even going to attempt to summarize his theoretical position in this brief Sounding,
but I will write out the following quotation (which I won't indent, because it would
probably get screwed up in an e-mail):

"Society, Culture, and Space"

"Just as social-structural works often neglect the shaping influence of culture,
they also regularly overlook the spatial embeddeness of social action...Analysis of
everyday police behavior, in other words, must pay attention not only to its social
and cultural construction, but also to its intractable spatiality; in working to uphold
socially constructed notions of public order, officers seek to control the spaces
they patrol." (20-21.)

Well, isn't that something that you would want to read on about? It was so for
me.

The body of the book has six chapters, each describing and complexifying the six
spatially expressed "normative orders." These are; [1] "...law, which by legislative
fiat defines the permissible parameters of police action [rooted in, among other
things, what space is public and what space is private]; [2] bureaucratic
regulations, which seek to determine police procedures more finely through a set
of rules that establish a chain of command [and which ascribe control of
particular spaces to particular--sometimes competing--subdivisions of the
bureaucracy]; [3] adventure/machismo, which constitutes the police as
courageous individuals who embrace danger as a test of individual ability [and
who choose to be or not be in particular places at particular times]; [4] safety,
which establishes a set of practices to protect the police from undue harm [and
which means that police are trained to walk close to buildings (so they may
surprise whomever is inside), keep their cruiser windows rolled down (to be able
to hear shots being fired) and their seat belts unfastened (to get out fast) in
`dangerous' neighborhoods]; [5] competence, which suggests that police should
be able to control the public areas for which they are responsible; and [6]
morality, which infuses police practice with a sense of right and goodness, in
essence because it helps protect society from `bad guys' [who are located in
particular places]."

For each of the six "normative orders," Herbert writes a multifaceted analysis
based on his eight months of participant observation field notes.

Herbert's work was done as a participant observer in The Wilshire Division of the
LAPD. His opportunity to do this research was because of efforts to reform the
"overly professionalized" LAPD, an effort resulting largely from the brutal beating
of Rodney King. Thus, Herbert was in a rare historical situation where he had
access that would ordinarily be denied. His challenge was to make useful sense
of what he observed in a manner that would explain police behavior in ways that
even the police might find enlightening. Thus, this is not an "expose" of police
behavior. Reading this book makes it clearer why cops become so righteously
incensed at people who try to run away from them or angry at gangs who tag
neighborhoods with graffiti or even dismissive of their fellow police who choose
not to go for the most arrests in the most dangerous areas. (These latter cops
are called "Station Queens." How homophobic!)

Over the past six years I've tried to march with ILGO (Irish Lesbian and Gay
Organization) in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. (I really don't want to be
associated with that awful display, but I express my right to march in a public
event regardless of my sexuality.) Every year, despite the fact that the protest
has been peaceful the previous year, the police bring up the most awesome array
of artillery that you can imagine. There are literally blocks lined with vans and
communication units and equipment of unimaginable uses. There are hundreds
of police dressed up in riot gear. It has always seemed a bit of a mystery to me
just why it is so important to the police that they display this kind of out of whack
response to a few hundred peaceful protesters. After all, there are real problems
in New York that could be attended to. This book helps me understand their
need to control space and to deny my challenge to their control.

Dowry Murder: The Imperial Origins of a Cultural Crime

Dowry Murder: The Imperial Origins of a Cultural Crime
Veena Talwar Oldenburg | 2002-07-18 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 288 | History
The Hindu custom of dowry has long been blamed for the murder of wives and female infants in India. In this highly provocative book, Veena Oldenburg argues that these killings are neither about dowry nor reflective of an Indian culture or caste system that encourages violence against women. Rather, such killings can be traced directly to the influences of the British colonial era. In the precolonial period, dowry was an institution managed by women, for women, to enable them to establish their status and have recourse in an emergency. As a consequence of the massive economic and societal upheaval brought on by British rule, womens entitlements to the precious resources obtained from land were erased and their control of the system diminished, ultimately resulting in a devaluing of their very lives. Taking us on a journey into the colonial Punjab, Veena Oldenburg skillfully follows the paper trail left by British bureaucrats to indict them for interpreting these crimes against women as the inherent defects of Hindu caste culture. The British, Oldenburg claims, publicized their "civilizing mission" and blamed the caste system in order to cover up the devastation their own agrarian policies had wrought on the Indian countryside. A forceful demystification of contemporary bride burning concludes this remarkably original book. Deploying her own experiences and memories and her research at a women's shelter with "dowry cases" for almost a year in the mid-eighties, the author looks at the contemporary violence against wives and daughters-in-law in modern India. Oldenburg seamlessly weaves the contemporary with the historical, the personal with the political, and strips the layers of exoticism off an ancient practice to show how an invaluable safety net was twisted into a deadly noose. She brings us startlingly close to the worsening treatment of modern Indian women as she challenges us to rethink basic assumptions about womens human and economic rights. Combining rigorous research with impassioned analysis and a nuanced treatment of a complex, deeply controversial subject, this book critiques colonialism while holding a mirror to gender discrimination in modern India.
Reviews
Can a book be scholastic AND heart-wrenching at the same time? This one is.

I came across Ms. Oldenburg's work while working on a project on the interrelation of the Indian woman's safety and Economic independence, in Grad school.

I love her work for the following reasons:

1. She has extensive bibliography and citations to establish credibility of the statements in the book. It is easy and effortless to read historical work knowing that there is veracity and not just folk-lore in the stories told. This helps readers form a healthy relationship with the issue and gives the society tools to work on an issue in a balanced, effective way.

Those who have done research work on subjects pertaining to India know just how frustrating/close to impossible it is to get cited work - esp. if you are physically not located in India. Most professional publications even, do not feel the need to cite sources. For e.g., you can search on a topic of social interest or the work of an NGO in India and a myriad of results will mushroom regurgitating the same info without any credit to the original source.

2. Not only is her work inundated perfectly, she is capable of juggling objectivity, compassion and empathy in one clean shot in this book. I read a few pages on Goolge books before I bought it. And I am glad I did. It will be something I will pass on to all the children in my family, male and female.

It is to blame current situations, but difficult to decipher the profound impact of several decades of slavery. A slavery of paying unreal taxes - for 100s of years - that robbed an entire nation of its prosperity.

If anyone has doubts about just how damaging the British were to India, they should read this book. It tells a horrific story of indirectly perpetrated crimes with evidential support.

3. The author does not draw any inferences for the user. She presents the facts, a million details that explain what shaped the Indian woman's story, leading to her present day position in modern India.

25,000 a year killed - and counting.

Ms. Oldenburg, you have to write more!!!

"One of Dowry Murder's many original contributions is to link the discourses on female infanticide/dowry in the high colonial period with the current discourse on dowry. Oldenburg provides a complex picture of causality."--Barbara Metcalf, Professor of History, University of California, Davis

"A strong, contentious book on an intellectually and socially hot topic, Dowry Murder offers a rich and complex answer to the question: What are the causes of violence against women in India, of female infanticide, 'dowry' deaths, and battering?"
--Susanne Hoeber Rudolph, Proefssor of Political Science, University of Chicago

"With this study, Oldenburg has turned the standard interpretation of both sati and dowry death on its head. Her methodology combines the historian's careful combing of the archives with the anthropologist's use of life histories and interviews. This is a provocative and original work of scholarship. Many will disagree with it, but few will be able to ignore it."

Feint of Art

Feint of Art
Hailey Lind | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | Signet | 336 | Fiction Other
Every chapter begins with an excerpt from a book by grandfather Georges about his life as an art forger. If you want, these can draw you into all kinds of philosophical speculations about the nature of truth and illusion (why artwork created today less valuable than one created centuries ago and why is a forgery from 137BC in the Brock museum while Georges's forgeries aren't?). Or you can just enjoy the suspense and the laugh out loud moments (like when poor Annie gets stuck in a window, which is much funnier in the novel than in a review). And in a postscript you can learn how to try Annie's faux finishing methods at home.

I'd give this six stars if I could and hope there will be many more Annie Kincaid mysteries. If they're anything like this one, they will be fabulous. It would be great if someone makes it into a movie (I vote for Sandra Bullock, or maybe Renee Zellwenger, as Annie).

Nematode worms are among the most ubiquitous organisms on earth. They include free-living forms as well as parasites of plants, insects, humans and other animals. In recent years there has been an explosion of interest in nematode biology, including the area of nematode behaviour. The latter has, however, until now, not been synthesized into a single comprehensive volume.Nematode Behaviour seeks to redress this imbalance by providing the first comprehensive review of current knowledge of the behaviour of nematodes. Key topics including locomotion and orientation, feeding and reproductive behaviour, and biotic and abiotic interactions are reviewed by leading authorities from the USA, UK, India and New Zealand.

Surface Effects and Contact Mechanics IX: Computational Methods and Experiments

Surface Effects and Contact Mechanics IX: Computational Methods and Experiments
WIT Press | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | WIT Press | 288 | Physics
The importance of contact and surface effects in modern engineering and their combined effects led the organisers to reconvene this 9th International Conference, which covers two related topics: Computational Methods and Experiments in Contact Mechanics and Surface Effects. Nowadays the importance of contact and surface problems in many technological fields is well understood. They are complex and inherently non-linear due to the moving boundary and the different properties of materials, particularly along the contact surfaces. Structural components fail by wear, corrosion, high cycle fatigue etc, that is to say they are affected by surface conditions. The use of surface treatments can reduce the cost of components and extend the life of the elements for surfaces undergoing contact, a problem that is specifically addressed by the Conference. This book contains papers from the Ninth International Conference on Surface Effects and Contact Mechanics: Computational Methods and Experiments, and discusses the following topics: Surface treatments; Thick coatings; Thin coatings; Surface problems in contact mechanics; Indentation and hardness; Fatigue; Numerical analysis; Applications and case studies.

Universal Meta Data Models

Universal Meta Data Models
| 2004-04-09 00:00:00 | | 0 | Data Model

* The heart of the book provides the complete set of models that will support most of an organization's core business functions, including universal meta models for enterprise-wide systems, business meta data and data stewardship, portfolio management, business rules, and XML, messaging, and transactions
* Developers can directly adapt these models to their own businesses, saving countless hours of development time
* Building effective meta data repositories is complicated and time-consuming, and few IT departments have the necessary expertise to do it right-which is why this book is sure to find a ready audience
* Begins with a quick overview of the Meta Data Repository Environment and the business uses of meta data, then goes on to describe the technical architecture followed by the detailed models

User review
Rather superficial treatment of metadata management
If you want to know how to model certain types of metadata, this book might be of some help. It didn't help me to understand how to build a metadata management system. The book proposes a metadata management architecture; it describes the obvious parts of this architecture in great detail while the really interesting questions remain open. For instance, the really critical part is metadata integration. The book spends two meager paragraphs for this topic. The book repeatedly refers to metadata integration tools which can be bought or developed. A survey of such tools is however missing; thus if you want to know whether to buy or build a metadata management system, the book won't help you. Another example for missing detail is the statement that many architects treat the metadata management system as a data warehouse, while in Marco's view it is an operational system (which probably means that metadata should be continuously loaded), but the book never explains what an `operational` metadata management system would be (there are still metadata sources which are used in an operational way).

User review
Good reference from a RDBMS perspective
Although this is a well written book, for a book published in 2004 with the word `universal` in the title, I expected a little more modern treatment of metadata. This book begins with the statement that Mr. Marco is the `world's foremost authority on metadata`. And although I agree that the book does have several good points, it does not appear to be a well-rounded textbook on metadata. There are however several well-written sections on the relationship between the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and metadata and the process of creating data stewardship teams. I was disappointed that the book does not even mention ISO/IEC 11179, RDF, OWL or any other modern tuple-based metadata technologies. The book does however mention how to use COBOL REDEFINES, DASD and other mainframe techniques to use metadata. The central thesis of the book is that metadata can and should be stored in a relational databases. The argument is that although relational structure are sometimes limiting, the prevalence of SQL skill sets make it practical to use relational databases to store metadata. The book includes a CD with ERWIN? files and a 30 day evaluation copy of ERWIN. The book also suffers from some formatting omissions such as the fact that most of the data models listed in the appendix lack titles.

User review
An Essential Resource for Managing Complexity
Universal Meta Data Models is filled with practical insights and world-class implementation guidelines gleaned from years of consulting on complex system integration and data warehouse projects. David Marco combines technical information with the bottom-line business case to roll it out.

Do you know where your data is? Meta data is structured knowledge management. It's about keeping track of what's happening in your IT systems -- databases, transformations, process flow, business rules, reporting -- and synchronizing that understanding across systems and teams. If you already know that and want to make it happen, this is the book for you.

If you are new to meta data, you will probably want to read Marco's prior work, Building and Managing the Meta Data Repository, first. Universal Meta Data Models picks up the meta data repository concept and extends it to the whole enterprise, in a Managed Meta Data Environment (MME). The MME has six components:

- Meta Data Sourcing Layer
- Meta Data Integration Layer
- Meta Data Management Layer
- Meta Data Repository
- Meta Data Marts
- Meta Data Delivery Layer

Marco describes each of these layers in detail, along with practical examples of how to roll them out in various industries. And just to spice it up a bit, he includes numerous morbidly humorous case studies illustrating the disasters that happen to companies that fail to properly managing their greatest asset: knowledge.

For everyone who knows economics is important but doesn't really know why, Gittinomics is the indispensable, plain-speaking, entertaining and highly relevant guide to the economics of our everyday lives.
Reviews
Ross Gittins has a mission. He wants to help you, the reader, understand the economy, as you would expect from an economics columnist. But that is not all. He also wants to "do what economics is supposed to do: help you maximize your utility."

This is a bold statement. Economists tend to assume that people know their own business best. Advice to individuals outside the policy arena is usually limited to "there's no such thing as a free lunch".

No longer. Now we have crossed the final frontier: the economics self-help book. Gittins embraces this label, seemingly without realizing how big a change it represents. We already have the `Dear Economist' column in the Financial Times. Are we going to end up with Dr Tim or Dr Ross next to Dr Phil and Oprah?

Or perhaps that should be the Reverend Ross. The son of a preacher man, he is not averse to laying down the law. We spend too much time chasing wealth and status (and watching TV) and too little time with our friends and family. An old message, but one which has been reinforced by the latest wave of happiness research. He is on fairly solid ground here, although the most overworked factoid of this literature - that Americans' self reported happiness has not risen since the 1950s despite a doubling of per capita income - could equally well be used as an argument against desegregation or legalised abortion.

He overreaches, however, when claiming that things are not only bad but getting worse - that we are living in an age of "hyper" or "heightened" materialism. He complains about "how much harder and longer so many of us work these days", even after quoting statistics showing that the longer work week only affects a small minority of workers, most of whom are happy with their hours, and that the trend has leveled off since 2000. His only hard evidence is the work of David Myers, who showed that American students and workers have become more focused on money in their education and career choices. Given increasing inequality, this is perfectly understandable without any change in values (the flower power generation grew up with full employment and rising wages as a rather boring given).

And assuming that people do not always know their own business can lead to some strange positions. Gittins is happy to maintain the most transparent illusions in the tax system - a Medicare levy that does not come close to paying for Medicare, and tax cuts that barely give back bracket creep. The geese do not hiss so loudly that way, as Colbert might have said. But if one believes that the geese are happier with `milkshake and sandwich' tax cuts rather than CPI indexation, it seems rather ambitions to urge the same barnyard fowl to take control of their destiny, throw off their materialist delusions, and embrace the simple life. This is the real dilemma of behavioural economics: Does one educate people to make better decisions, or demand that government policy exploit our cognitive biases (in our own best interests, of course)?

The book does have a wealth of information on recent trends in work, housing, and demography, and some sensible recommendations for both public policy makers and private individuals (unify public health spending in regional authorities, don't pay HECS up front, get a low interest credit card with no frills if you don't pay off your debt each month). In the end, though, I suspect that Gittins is preaching to the choir. Those who do not already share his beliefs are unlikely to be convinced by Gittinomics. They are probably working too much unpaid overtime to even read it.

Economic Record December 2007
Reviews
Ross Gittins has long been one of my "must-read" Sydney Morning Herald columnists, and this gives more of his wise insights into economics. What I love about Gittins is that money is never the be-all-and-end-all: he looks at how decisions made impact society as a whole and people's quality of life. We need more columnists, and particularly economic columnists, like him.

Eyewitness Travel Guide to Great Places to Stay in Europe
DK Publishing | 2000-01-01 00:00:00 | DK Travel | 432 | Europe
The guide that shows you what other travel books only tell you!

Truly the guide that shows you what others only tell you, DK's Eyewitness Travel Guide: Great Places to Stay in Europe features detailed street maps, cutaways of important attractions, a handy phrasebook, and advice on the best places to eat, shop and sleep. Wake to the sounds of cocks crowing at the Quinta Nova da Conceicao in Lisbon, enjoy opera brunches at the Pulitzer in Amsterdam, spoil yourself at the Principe di Savoia in Milan, or experience the 600-year old Zum Rebstock while in Lucerne, Switzerland. With more than 1,000 full-color photographs detailing hotel interiors and exteriors and lists of regional cuisine and beverages, there is no better way to locate some of the most charming and distinctive places to stay while in Europe.
Reviews

Beautiful DK book, printed in Italy. Glossy pages with hotels, inns, chalets, and castles across Europe. Reinforced covers.

We used this travel guide to plan an extended trip across Italy from Venice to Piedmont, and into Switzerland. The information provided was accurate, and we were pleased with every stay, from a monastery-turned-Napoleonic fort in the hills overlooking Turin, to a 400-year-old hotel in the Principality of Liechtenstein. Anyone want to send me on a second honeymoon? LOL

Great Places to Stay in Europe also includes some brief in-country tips, but you will probably want a true sightseeing guidebook for any particular region(s) you visit. I cannot speak to the revised (2003) edition, but if it is anything like the original (First American Edition, 2000), you are good to go. Oddly, Amazon shows the same number of pages (432) for both.

Reviews
This book has been a lifesaver. Although there is plenty of hotel information available on the internet, this would require some pre-planning. There is no substitute for simply having the addresses and phone numbers available in a book when travelling by car. The book lists quality places in the various touristic areas of Europe. When traveling in the off-season, you can simply rely on the book for last minute reservation while in the area.

Reviews
Another wonderful travel guide from Dorling Kindersley, this one covering accommodations in fifteen European countries Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece.

Great Places to Stay in Europe entices readers with stunning double-page photos prefacing each country introduction, which is an overview of the different types of accommodations, highlights of some of the most interesting places to see, food and drink suggestions, bedrooms and bathroom arrangements, and pertinent practical information such as tipping, telephoning, and currency.

Country sections are easy to spot: each is identified by its own colored thumb tab, and favorite places to stay are designated with a photo, while short entries offer excellent amenities but are rated slightly lower. Nonetheless, they are still "great places to stay." Photo listings have a description of the premises, telephone number and address, email address, map location, number of rooms, and other amenities, all designated by a symbol for easy usage. Price bands and a country map are also included as is a comprehensive index of hotels listed by name and by area. (Check for prices in Euros.)

As with DK's Eyewitness Travel Guides, Great Places to Stay in Europe is an ideal size for travel. Highly recommended.
Reviews
If I were to have a few select books on travel, this would be one of them. It is an indispensible tool for finding enjoyable places to stay. It has maps of specific countries with the locations of the hotels it describes on the map. This is really useful when you are travelling (in a car) around as opposed to just staying in one city or two. I agree with another reveiwer that the hotels/inns/palaces with pictures are generally better than entries without a picture. Sometimes the website for the establishment will be listed. One caveat... as many countries in Europe now use the euro for currency, you may have to do some math as the prices listed are in former currencies... but the "star rating" system will give you a rough idea.
Reviews
Truly outstanding publication. Perfectly organized, realistic photogrtaphs help readers select unique, charming, and exclusive inns of character. My wife wanted to stay in a castle with a moat in France. We used the book to find the perfect inn. A memorable chateau (de Boussec) in the quiet countryside, surrounded by fresh flowers, and fields of cattle. Just perfect. The Marquis (de Boussec) greeted us at the door and entertained us for dinner with his lovely wife. Our mouths watered at the homemade tenderloin and fresh berries (from the garden) served in the formal dining room. Our eyes watered when we realized we ate at a 400 year old table, where French nobility dined before us. All the hosts spoke English, all recommended unique sights. Great inns in Provence, and elsewhere. Get this book, and see a side of Europe once reserved for the aristocracy.

IBS Relief: A Complete Approach to Managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBS Relief: A Complete Approach to Managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Dawn Burstall,T. Michael Vallis,Geoffrey K. Turnbull | 2006-07-28 00:00:00 | Wiley | 224 | Alternative Medicine
Take control of IBS so

IBS doesn't take control of your life

IBS Relief, Second Edition is an extensively updated, hands-on guide to help you manage your symptoms and limit the frequency, intensity, and duration of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) episodes. Written by a doctor, a dietitian, and a psychologist, this guide gives you a multidisciplinary approach encompassing every proven strategy for managing IBS, including new drug therapies and stress management techniques.

This book won't confuse you with medical terminology--IBS is confounding enough. Instead, the book contains questionnaires, lists, diaries, stress and food tolerance tests, and other tools to help you determine the pattern of your symptoms, identify triggers, and take appropriate action. You'll learn how to manage your problem based on your specific symptoms. Approaches include:
* A three-step process for managing irritable bowel through healthy eating
* Recommended diet adjustments for the six most common IBS symptoms
* Three stress-management strategies, including specific techniques for calming the body, calming the mind, and confronting stress
* Three steps to controlling pain

This book gives you the tools, the techniques, and the information you need to make specific lifestyle and diet changes that can bring real relief.
Reviews
This is the second edition of the same named book first published in 1999. The book seems to be written primarily from a dietitian's and psychologist's perspective so there are at times what I consider murky medical advice given, such as Healthy Eating and the concept of MyPyramid. The concept is that if you "stick" to your diet then you will be in control of your symptoms. I only wish! There are some good insights as to how powerful cognitive restructuring can be. One statement that made the book for me was "We recently did a study of the pain experienced by IBS sufferers versus Crohn's sufferers. We found that the pain of those with IBS was every bit as severe as the pain experienced by those with Crohn's disease. The difference between the two groups is: social support. Crohn's disease has more social support". This tells the authors and the readers that suffering with IBS can actually be greater than Crohn's because of the lack of support. To this end, the book does offer some valuable advice to talking to your doctor and learning to take control of your own health.

Interest Rates, Exchange Rates and World Monetary Policy

Interest Rates, Exchange Rates and World Monetary Policy
John E. Floyd | 2009-12-17 00:00:00 | Springer | 404 | Economics

A careful basic theoretical and econometric analysis of the factors determining the real exchange rates of Canada, the U.K., Japan, France and Germany with respect to the United States is conducted. The resulting conclusion is that real exchange rates are almost entirely determined by real factors relating to growth and technology such as oil and commodity prices, international allocations of world investment across countries, and underlying terms of trade changes. Unanticipated money supply shocks, calculated in five alternative ways have virtually no effects. A Blanchard-Quah VAR analysis also indicates that the effects of real shocks predominate over monetary shocks by a wide margin. The implications of these facts for the conduct of monetary policy in countries outside the U.S. are then explored leading to the conclusion that all countries, to avoid exchange rate overshooting, have tended to automatically follow the same monetary policy as the United States. The history of world monetary policy is reviewed along with the determination of real exchange rates within the Euro Area.

Trade-offs Among Alternative Government Interventions in the Market for Terrorism

Trade-offs Among Alternative Government Interventions in the Market for Terrorism
Rand Corporation | 2007-10-30 00:00:00 | RAND Corporation | 113 | Politics
The Department of Homeland Security is responsible for protecting the United States from terrorism. It does so partly through the Urban Areas Security Initiative, though its distribution has been criticized for not reflecting risk. This monograph offers a practical definition of terrorism risk and a method for estimating it that addresses inherent uncertainties. It also demonstrates a framework for evaluating alternative risk estimates. Finally, it makes five recommendations for improving resource allocation.
Reviews
Since the tragic events of 9/11, a myth has developed that if just the right mixture of counter terrorism strategies can be found, the U.S. can be ensured against another terrorist attack on its soil. Although this is complete nonsense, it is a myth that is embraced by politicians of every stripe and, more frightening, by many in the federal government.

As a result, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues to try to protect everywhere and everyone and so succeeds in not protecting anything. More seriously DHS is unable to allocate funds for emergency responses in the most vulnerable and likely terrorist targets. Indeed because it subscribes to the myth that the U.S. can be made invulnerable to terrorist attacks it does not appear to particularly interested in rational target identification, risk assessments, or creating resilience in those targets. This attitude is both foolish and dangerous.

The Rand Corporation created an aptly named unit: the Center for Terrorism Risk Management Policy (CTRMP) which has a number of functions, but in this monograph specifically attempts to advise DHS on how to first distinguish between more and less vulnerable urban targets and how to use probability theorems to assess risks to the most vulnerable targets. The CTRMP basis this monograph on the assumption that large urban areas will constitute on set of obvious terrorist targets. It is clear however that variances of the same methodology of target identification and risk assessment can be applied to other potential targets as well (i.e. thermal and hydro-electric power plants, petroleum refineries etc.). So if DHS would surprise everybody and actually adopt the CTRMP proposal would this really solve at least one thorny counter-terrorism issue? Well no it would not. There is no substitute rational thought and real knowledge of the types of terrorist enemies that the U.S. is threatened by and there is no evidence that DHS is particularly interested in knowing its terrorist enemies or thinking rationally about the threats those enemies pose.

This monograph is not an enjoyable read, but it is an important one. This reviewer would suggest reading it with Stephan Flynn's book "America the Vulnerable" ([...]) which goes into considerably more detail about the need to be able to have the resiliency to recover quickly from what must be inevitable terrorist attacks as well as natural disasters.

When Children Don't Sleep Well: Interventions for Pediatric Sleep Disorders Therapist Guide Therapist Guide (Treatments That Work)

When Children Don't Sleep Well: Interventions for Pediatric Sleep Disorders Therapist Guide Therapist Guide (Treatments That Work)
V. Mark Durand | 2008-03-10 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 160 | Sleep Disorders
Many children experience sleep problems and their parents often seek help for what can be a nightly disruption to the entire family. Difficulty getting a good night's sleep can also impact a child's functioning during the day. In addition, sleep problems often accompany and can contribute to other disorders. Despite common belief, children do not simply 'grow out of' most sleep problems. While medications are often prescribed, they may have serious side-effects and have not been proven effective in children. However, there is more than twenty years of psychological research supporting non-pharmacological interventions for children's sleep problems.
This comprehensive guide provides intervention options for a wide variety of sleep problems, including bedtime disturbances, night waking, sleep terrors, and nightmares. It also addresses sleep hygiene, bedwetting, and other sleep-related issues. It uses a modular format, starting with a thorough assessment of the child's sleep problems and the family's ability to intervene. Each intervention module outlines how to instruct families in selecting an intervention and carrying it out successfully. A companion workbook for parents includes detailed steps for intervention, as well as recording forms for sleep and behavior.
Used as a stand-alone management program for pediatric sleep problems or as part of treatment for other childhood disorders, this guide is an essential resource for clinicians.

The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction (Cambridge Companions to Literature)

The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction (Cambridge Companions to Literature)
Edward James,Farah Mendlesohn | 2003-12-08 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 328 | British
Science fiction is at the intersection of numerous fields. It is literature which draws on popular culture, and engages in speculation about science, history, and all varieties of social relations. This volume brings together essays by scholars and practitioners of science fiction, which look at the genre from different angles. It examines science fiction from Thomas More to the present day; and introduces important critical approaches (including Marxism, postmodernism, feminism and queer theory).
Reviews
This is truly a fine volume, highly recommended to anyone who wants a broad sampling of the academic thought that has been applied to the genre. Although it's a collection of chapters by many different authors, I thought the quality was uniformly excellent. The structure of the book results in some overlap of themes, for example with a chapter on "Feminist theory and science Fiction" appearing in "Part 2. Critical approaches" and a chapter on "Gender in science Fiction" in "Part 3. Sub-genres and themes". However, I didn't find this to be a flaw; it gives the reader the opportunity to read different authors approaching related topics from different angles.

My favorite authors and chapters included Ken Macleod's "Politics and science Fiction" and Edward James' "Utopias and anti-utopias". Farah Mendelsohn's chapter "Religion and science Fiction" was a real eye-opener for me, examining a side of science fiction that I'd been pretty dismissive towards.

Not cheap, but well worth it.
Reviews
Anthologies are notoriously inconsistent. Most contain several essays considerably below the level of the best pieces and many contain a few utterly miserable ones. On the downside, no essay in this collection truly stands out; on the upside, there really isn't a weak entry in the volume. I honestly cannot think of another collection of which I can make that statement.

Whether you are a serious fan of Sci-fi or a casual reader seeking an introduction to the field, this collection will prove invaluable. I fall somewhere between those two categories. Over the years I've read a few hundred Sci-fi novels and seen most Sci-fi films that have been made, but it has never been my main source of reading or film viewing. I've read rather a lot of the historically important works such as Mary Shelly, Henry Kuttner, H. G. Wells, Olaf Stapleton, and David Lindsay, but I've never attempted anything like a comprehensive reading of the classics. And I have ready very little that has been published in the past fifteen years. Still, I found that I learned an enormous amount about the field from this book. I learned about several historical works I had not previously known of, got a better understanding of the state of the genre from one decade to another, and learned a great deal about trends in the field in the past couple of decades. I also learned something about the various literary critical reactions to the genre. For those in the academy, it is a helpful introduction to the scholarly take on things.

The book is also great at pointing the way to other books. I kept a sheet of paper beside me as I read. I have already bought a few critical books on Sci-fi based on mentions of them in this volume, while I also have compiled a list of a number of novels that I plan on reading.

The essays in the book are broken down into three separate sections. The first section deals with the history of Sci-fi, from precursor works to the magazine age to various decades after. The second and most academic section deals with various academic approaches to Sci-fi, including Marxist, feminist, postmodernist, and queer theory. The final and most wide-ranging section covers a variety of themes such as gender, race, hard science fiction, alternate history, space opera, film and TV, and religion. The writers are mainly English and mostly academic, though several are also writers of Sci-fi. Even the writers, however, are fully qualified academics. For instance, one of the more scholarly entries is that by Brian Stableford. Though most of the essayists are British, American Sci-fi has so completely dominated the genre that it automatically demands priority. If anything, I was somewhat surprised by the absence of some European writers. There is, for instance, very little discussion of Stanislaw Lem, though several deserving British writers do receive attention.

In addition to the very good essays there is also a very interesting (though certainly not exhaustive) list of chronology listing some significant novels, short stories, movies, and television series. There is also a good bibliography at the end of the book, though I wish it had been annotated.

I highly recommend this collection to anyone interested in Sci-fi either in a casual or more dedicated fashion. In all honestly I have to say it is one of the most successful volumes in the Cambridge Companions series that I have read.

The chapters are written by leading experts in the field and are designed to provide the reader with the necessary background to evaluate critically the potential of DNA methylation in cancer therapy. Key features of this book include discussions of the following topics: The molecular machinery responsible for DNA methylation and their impact on gene expression and tumorigenesis. The emerging relation between DNA methylation and chromatin modifying proteins. How the relationship between DNA methylation and chromatin modifying proteins might clarify the mechanisms and therapeutic implications of aberrant DNA methylation in cancer. Illustrations of the diagnostic potential of methylation in cancer and novel tools for using methylation profiling of cancers. The therapeutic potential of the DNA methylation machinery and novel attempts to target the DNA methylation enzymes in anticancer therapy. This book will be of interest to a wide audience, including oncologists, researchers and clinicians, and graduate students in the fields of oncology, molecular biology, and cancer therapy, as well as researchers and decision-makers in industry focusing on anticancer drugs and diagnosis.
