Falcon (Reaktion Books - Animal)

Falcon (Reaktion Books - Animal)
Helen Macdonald | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | Reaktion Books | 208 | Biology
The fastest animal on earth, the falcon deserves attention not just for the combination of speed, power, beauty and ferocity that have made it an object of fascination for thousands of years, but for the light it sheds on the cultures through which it has flown. This book, bridging science and cultural history, surveys the practical and symbolic uses of falcons in human culture in new and exciting ways.

Helen Macdonald describes the complete history of the bird, ranging across the globe and over many millennia, as well as incorporating the latest scientific discoveries. There are chapters on falcon natural history; myth and legend; falconry; conservation; falcons in the military, in urban settings and the corporate world. Along the way the reader will discover how falcons were mobilized in secret military projects, their links with espionage, the Third Reich and the space programme, and how they̢۪ve featured in erotic stories. The book explores their veneration as gods in Ancient Egypt, their role as cultural icons in the Middle East, and their recruitment by the advertising industry to promote all manner of products, from photocopiers to jet planes.

Falcon combines in-depth practical, personal and scientific knowledge of falcons with a strong analytical perspective on the place of these birds in human history. It will be enjoyed by specialists and non-specialists alike: lovers of the countryside, birdwatchers or anyone who has ever wondered why falcons are so compelling.

Forest Dynamics and Disturbance Regimes: Studies from Temperate Evergreen-Deciduous Forests (Cambridge Studies in Ecology)

Forest Dynamics and Disturbance Regimes: Studies from Temperate Evergreen-Deciduous Forests (Cambridge Studies in Ecology)
Lee E. Frelich | 2002-02-18 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 280 | Conservation
Lee Frelich provides a major contribution to the study of temperate-zone forest dynamics by considering three important themes: the combined influence of wind, fire, and herbivory on the successional trajectories and structural characteristics of forests; the interaction of deciduous and evergreen tree species to form mosiacs; and the significance of temporal and spatial scale with regard to the overall impact of disturbances. These themes are explored via case studies from the forests in the Lake States of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, where the presence of large primary forest remnants provides a unique opportunity to study the long-term dynamics of near-boreal, pine, and hardwood-hemlock forests.

Reviews
The 'Zohar'is perhaps the most difficult and problematic of all of Jewish religious texts. Rabbi Aryeh Wineman provides a good small introduction to a part of it by selecting eight narratives, translating and annotating them. They are a drop from the sea, but a very precious and sweet drop.

The notes are a major help in understanding the text.

The volume is attractively done.

Leadership Processes and Follower Self-identity (Series in Organization and Management)

Leadership Processes and Follower Self-identity (Series in Organization and Management)
Robert G. Lord,Douglas J. Brown | 2003-07-01 00:00:00 | Psychology Press | 264 | Leadership
Presenting a follower-centered perspective on leadership, this book focuses on followers as the direct determinant of leadership effects because it is generally through follower reactions and behaviors that leadership attempts succeed or fail. Therefore, leadership theory needs to be articulated with a theory of how followers create meaning from leadership acts and how this meaning helps followers self-regulate in specific contexts. In this book, an attempt is made to develop such a theory, maintaining that the central construct in this process is the self-identity of followers. In developing this theoretical perspective, the authors draw heavily from several areas of research and theory. The most critical constructs do not come directly from the leadership literature, but from social and cognitive theory pertaining to follower's self-identity, self-regulatory processes, motivation, values, cognitions, and emotions and perceptions of social justice. Leaders may have profound effects on these aspects of followers and it is by analyzing such indirect, follower-mediated leadership effects that most ideas regarding leadership theory and practice are developed.

Due to its broad theoretical focus, this book is relevant to a number of audiences. The authors' principal concern is with the development of leadership theory and the practice of leadership making the book relevant to audiences in management, applied psychology, and social psychology. They have tried to clearly define key constructs and provide practical examples so that the book could be accessible to advanced undergraduate students. However, the diversity of the underlying theoretical literatures and the complexity of the framework developed also make the book appropriate for graduate courses in those disciplines, and for readers with a professional interest in leadership theory or practice.

Reviews
This is a wonderful review of the newer psychological approach to leadership (and "followership"). Much of the previous academic work on this important topic falls short of giving a real explanation of how leadership works--what really makes people follow a leader. The Lord and Brown book integrates their own work, the work of social identity researchers such as Michael Hogg and Daan van Knippenberg, and the work of researchers in related areas (like social cognition and organizational justice)to give an excellent picture of how leadership functions in the behavior of leaders and in the mind of followers.

Be advised: This is a technical book that appears to be written for other academics. I think any intelligent layperson could understand the concepts presented here, but it probably would take a fair amount of effort to do so. That said, the understanding would be well worth the effort!

The End of the Bronze Age: Changes in Warfare and the Catastrophe Ca. 1200 B.C.

The End of the Bronze Age: Changes in Warfare and the Catastrophe Ca. 1200 B.C.
Robert Drews | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Princeton University Press | 280 | Ancient
The Bronze Age came to a close early in the twelfth century b.c. with one of the worst calamities in history: over a period of several decades, destruction descended upon key cities throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, bringing to an end the Levantine, Hittite, Trojan, and Mycenaean kingdoms and plunging some lands into a dark age that would last more than four hundred years. In his attempt to account for this destruction, Robert Drews rejects the traditional explanations and proposes a military one instead.
Reviews
It is very rare that I enjoy a book that is so academic: the author has a novel interpretation to make, which he constructs from a combination of written sources, archaeological evidence, and interpretation of art. Unlike many such studies that are exceedingly dry and eccentrically partisan, the author is a truly fine writer. It sustained my interest the whole way through, for a delightful reading experience.

About 1200 BCE, the Bronze Age ended in what the author calls "the Catastrophe". A relatively peaceful and stable way of life, with an extraordinarily rich culture that had lasted for centuries across the entire eastern Mediterranean, was swept away, initiating a dark age of several centuries. The causes of this have never been completely explained, hence the purpose of the book.

First, he eliminates the causes that have been proposed and found wanting: massive earthquake, migration, global draught or climate shift, system failure based on class tensions, and raids. In many ways, this is a wonderful introduction to the way academics think: they find evidence to demolish popular hypotheses, complete with asides on the errors of their authors. TO his credit, the author does so convincingly with humor and without the petty oneupsmanship that plagues the humanities.

Second, he builds a new hypothesis: that it was a change in the nature of warfare: the end of the age of the chariot, as brought down by the re-equipped foot soldier. To prove his point, he offers a dazzling overview of the forces at work during the period, from developments in weaponry to the sociology of elites of the period and commerce. To be sure, there are some points that are too labored, such as the interpretation of relevant examples of political art in Egypt or the archaeology of swords North of the Danube. But his writing is so clear, his ideas so interesting, and his vision so comprehensive that it fascinates from page 1. The entire book unfolds like an intricate tapestry, whose intersections of overlap fit into a coherent interpretation.

In my reading, the cultures of the Mediterranean Bronze Age had reached a kind of apogee. Elites ruled from citadels, engaging with eachother over great distances through rarified and accepted forms of communication and fealty. Controlling resources and the means of warfare, they had far more in common with eachother than with their linguistic and ethnic compatriots. Because of the requirements of bronzemaking (to unite copper and tin), an extensive trade network existed. Warfare, the author argues, had evolved into a somewhat static form: huge arrays of chariots - pulled by two horses and carrying a driver and archer - were the principal weapons of assault, with foot soldiers supporting them and unable alone to oppose them effectively. The apparatus was extremely costly, requiring technology, spare parts, highly specialized training, and craftsmanship. This is similar to the knights of the medieval chivalric age, with their armour, mores, and rituals governing very real armed conflicts. The author makes a solid argument for such an interpretation, which I cannot evaluate but I remain skeptical.

Then about 1200 BCE, the chariot suddenly lost its central place. The means to challenge the chariot came from newly armed foot soliders, who gained specialized javelins to attack chariot horses (stopping them for assault by foot); swords designed for slashing rather than thrusting; and a variety of innovations such as better balanced circular shields and new body armor designs. These soldiers apparently worked first as mercenaries to the chariot-based empires, but learned they could disable their employers and sack their palaces to plunder their wealth; the empires proved largely unable to train their forces to face these new invaders or remained stubbornly reluctant to adapt to new kinds of warfare that were emerging with iron and steel. The foot soldiers then became marauding hordes that destroyed virtually all of the Bronze Age empires, with the exceptions of Egypt and Mesopotamia, which repulsed attacks but were permanently reduced in power and reach.

While the argument certainly captures some of the truth, he does not explain why it happened at that moment, 1200 BCE. Even the identity of the invaders is uncertain. Finally, I would have liked more on the Iron Age culture that emerged as well as the elements of the Bronze Age cultures.

Warmly recommended. This is one of the best academic studies I have read in years.
Reviews
This book is excellent and should be required reading if you want to understand why the bronze age ended and great civilizations collapsed. The author seems to have an outstanding knowledge of the subject. It also excellent for thosse with an interest in military history.
Reviews
All I have to say is, "Wow!" I am extremely impressed with the author's research behind the decline and fall of the Bronze Age giving the opportunity for the Iron Age and all Iron Age civilization (i.e. the Greeks, the Israelites, etc.) to rise to power. The author debunks all previous assumptions to what brought the Bronze Age to an end and concentrates specifically on the problem from a military standpoint. His hypothesis sound very plausible and his research does all the speaking for him. This is a great wealth of published details concerning the Sea Peoples and more.
Reviews
I had a very hard time getting into Robert Drews' "The End of the Bronze Age." The author's thesis is that changes in warfare resulted in the prolonged "Dark Ages" from roughly 1200 BC to 750 BC in the Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean, though he also goes into several other possibilities. I guess I was hoping for a book that explained the Dark Ages, what existed just prior, the extent of it, and a better understanding for it in general. Instead this is a very narrow book, solely aimed at trying to come up with a reason, to the exclusion of the larger significance of it. If you're writing a PhD thesis on this topic this book may be for you, otherwise you may have a hard time staying interested.
Reviews
This is one of those books that if you are reading you already have a specific interest in the subject matter.

The book is well written and concise and provides information in a very readable and logical format. You will not be disappointed.

The theory of singular perturbations has evolved as a response to the need to find approximate solutions (in an analytical form) to complex problems. Typically, such problems are expressed in terms of differential equations which contain at least one small parameter, and they can arise in many fields: fluid mechanics, particle physics and combustion processes, to name but three.

University of California, Los Angeles

E-mail:

In his latest book, Toward Filipino Self-Determination: Beyond Transnational Globalization, Epifanio San Juan Jr. uncovers the concealed operations of power and the historic inequalities of political economic systems that have impacted Filipinos in an age of globalized crisis and contradiction. While the definition of globalization is often debated, for the majority of people in the Philippines the process of globalization can be more accurately described as "gobble-ization." Similar to the mass destruction caused in the Philippines at the wake of Hurricane Ondoy, the mechanisms of corporate globalization have enabled an international ruling class to pillage the resources of the islands, leaving behind an entire population submerged in the swollen overflows of structural adjustment, debt, and privatization. The rule of the high water is the doctrine of neoliberalism where every layer of the nation's social fabric is a site of looting, as the market has become the organizing logic of an entire social sphere. E. San Juan's book is an important contribution to the fields of globalization, race, and postcolonial studies as he foregrounds the domains of transformative possibility within culture and social life for Filipinos in a global diaspora, a population that has historically been greatly impacted by the tides of capitalist production.

This book, a compilation of essays written after 9/11 serves as a sequel to his influential writings, in particular, From Exile to Diaspora (1998) and After Postcolonialism (2000). Much like these earlier works, E. San Juan's methodology is a method of dissent that captures the complex social relations and constant motion of the Philippine Diaspora. With such a method, tension is present throughout his analysis engaging more commonly accepted theoretical frames promoted by postcolonial, postmodern, and post-Marxist scholars. He explains,

"We are not transmigrants or transnationals, to be sure, despite the theories of academic pundits and exoticizing media. We are Filipinos uprooted and dispersed from hearth and communal habitat. We will find our true home if there is a radical systemic change in the metropole and, more crucially, a popular-democratic transformation in the Philippines" (xvi).

E. San Juan argues that the struggle to end oppression for Filipinos, women, and people of color both within the United States as well as throughout the Diaspora is not simply a discursive or semiotic liberation but a global social relation. For those familiar with San Juan's earlier works there is recognizable overlap in the astute critiques that he makes; however, for a reader not exposed to the conditions and history of the Philippines or to social theory, E. San Juan's reiterations are valuable as he rigorously intervenes in complex arguments.

The chapters "Imperial Terror in the Homeland" and "In the Belly of the Beast" are important historical supplements for youth involved in organizing the popular Philippine Culture Nights (PCN); scholars of Ethnic and Asian American Studies; as well as community organizers interested in furthering political projects that counter the heightened injustices of racism and patriarchy. Throughout these chapters San Juan shows how seemingly disconnected events are linked through systemic exploitation and an international division of labor necessitated by the current global economic order. Such writings serve as a constant reminder that ecological disasters, racist anti-immigrant sentiments, and the escalating violence against women are dialectically related to the motions of capitalist development.

San Juan's chapter "Subaltern Silence" is especially illuminating for university students as they witness the privatization of their public education, the exorbitant increases in tuition fees, and the reduction of courses offered in the humanities and languages. Even though Filipinos have become one the largest Asian American groups in the United States, Filipino language instruction in the academy is sparse. San Juan argues that the struggle over language in our schools is a struggle over Filipino identity - an identity that must be rooted in the ideas of liberation, democracy, and justice for Filipinos throughout the world. He states, "literacy must be based on the reality of the subaltern life if it is to be effective in any strategy of real empowerment, in the decolonization of schooling for a start" (50). However, the struggle for Filipino languages cannot be confined solely within institutions of higher learning. San Juan argues that the struggle for Filipino languages "cannot be achieved except as part of the collective democratic struggles of other people of color and the vast majority of working citizens oppressed by a class-divided, racialized, and gendered order" (51).

It is this social order that Carlos Bulosan confronted in literature and labor organizing at the beginning of the 20th century. The influential writings of Carlos Bulosan are widely available due in large part to the research of E. San Juan. In keeping with this work, San Juan builds upon Bulosan's analysis in an assessment of the irrational conditions that continue to plague Filipinos in America in our present moment. In the chapter titled, "Revisiting Carlos Bulosan" San Juan requests that the reader not examine Bulosan's writing as a sacred or finished text. Rather, he invites us to resume the unfinished project of Bulosan and the countless "others" who have worked to understand the challenges that confront racialized and subjugated peoples of America in order to prepare for a more humane and just tomorrow. E. San Juan's examination of Bulosan's life and legacy is a dialectical endeavor. The author highlights Bulosan's life experiences that undoubtedly have influenced many. And yet, the author reminds us that individuals do not impose such an influence alone but by generations building on the labor of those who have come before.

The last chapter, "Tracking the Exile's Flight: Mapping a Rendezvous" San Juan reproduces a speech he delivered to alumni of the Philippine Studies Program, a program that enabled university students from around the United States to gain college credit for their summer studies in the Philippines. San Juan maintains that through critical travel experiences or "exposure trips" one can gain a critical standpoint of neoliberal globalization not provided by corporate media or by mainstream academic textbooks. The author argues that these personal experiences can provide critical points of analysis, especially when widened and applied to the conditions that entire groups of people (Filipinos) are situated. Throughout this chapter, San Juan's use of historical materialism provides the reader with an important lens to examine the social contradictions of the Philippine Diaspora.

A common theme throughout Toward Filipino Self-Determination is that Filipinos have passed on a rich legacy dedicated to the projects of democracy, liberation, and self-determination. A new generation of culture workers, scholars, activists, and radical feminists is emerging with their own adapted strategies to bring forth a new society from the vestiges of the old. Throughout his book E. San Juan reminds us that we are all located within arenas of battle, "between humanity and barbarism, between oppressed third world peoples fighting for survival and the rule of a dehumanized global capital" (166). He is astute in his analysis that in this historic struggle new ideas, imaginations, and strategies are needed that enables us to transform the world in which we live. This transformation requires understanding and such understanding can be furnished with theory.

Thirty-something rock/country star Hollis, is in bad shape. After a long time of partying and no sleep, his manager thinks it's time to whip him back into shape again. Enter Jeremy, the personal trainer Hollis's manager hires to help him. At first Hollis complains constantly and fights Jeremy on every little thing, but soon Hollis is looking and feeling better. Constantly working together in the close quarters of a tour bus brings out their mutual attraction, leading to an affair. Then a terrible accident separates them. Will their separation be permanent, or can these two find a way to stay together?

Living in Fast Forward did a good job of portraying the tedium, frustration, and loneliness of being on the road constantly and living a lie because of fame. The storyline was interesting, and I enjoyed Hollis and Jeremy's sparring in the beginning, as well as their role reversal after the accident. Their relationship seemed to progress naturally from pure sex to love. With all the good things this book had going for it, I should have loved it. In the end, though, Living in Fast Forward was enjoyable but the story never truly wowed me. The characters didn't have the depth I was hoping for, and the dialogue got a bit repetitive. I also had an issue with the occasional drug use, which is so not hot in my mind. Even so, Living in Fast Forward is an entertaining tale to spend a few hours with.

Hollis is a country rock star with an image to preserve. He is thirty something and handsome, and maybe fans, especially women one, like him both for his music than for his look. But years of living on the road, and alone, are leaving him on the brink of alcoholism and poor state of health. So his manager hires for him a personal trainer, Jeremy, who will live with him in the bus during the tour.

Jeremy is young and spirit free. He is openly gay and while days pass on tour, he begins to resent the lack of a sexual life. And maybe Hollis can help him with that problem: cause Hollis ia a gay in the closet, his career will be destroy if someone will unveal his secret. But on the bus, Jeremy and Hollis can have all the privacy they need. But the outside world is awaiting them...

Jeremy is a reckless character, easy and happy. He loves sex and after a time, he begin to love also Hollis. But he is not a selfish person, and doesn't want to ruin Hollis' career. He will content himself being the backdoor lover.

Hollis instead is used to be careful all his life. But he really loves Jeremy, and only Jeremy, and he is not willin to give up Jeremy, neither for his career. He is honest and strong. A very positive character.

The story is build like a collection of single short episodes (I think this is one of the Turn of the Screw by Torquere Press, and you can understand that) and it has a lot of sex, enjoyable and easy. A right dose of drama and some conflicts to give some challenge to the couple. In the end a lightheart reading.

This M/M erotica from Tortuga is one enjoyable read. The sex is sizzling hot yet delightfully loving. The dialogue may has quite a few "f..." but it is engaging, at times humorous but certainly works in this steamy romantic plot between a rock star addicted on junk food and his "health freak" personal trainer. Hollis and Jeremy are such endearing characters, their love credible and is most heartwarming following the accident. If you are looking for a hot steamy romance, this latest from Tortuga is for you.

The central topic of this research monograph is the relation between p-adic modular forms and p-adic Galois representations, and in particular the theory of deformations of Galois representations recently introduced by Mazur. The classical theory of modular forms is assumed known to the reader, but the p-adic theory is reviewed in detail, with ample intuitive and heuristic discussion, so that the book will serve as a convenient point of entry to research in that area. The results on the U operator and on Galois representations are new, and will be of interest even to the experts. A list of further problems in the field is included to guide the beginner in his research. The book will thus be of interest to number theorists who wish to learn about p-adic modular forms, leading them rapidly to interesting research, and also to the specialists in the subject.

Algebras of Linear Transformations

Algebras of Linear Transformations
Douglas R. Farenick | 2000-10-06 00:00:00 | Springer | 248 | Mathematics
This book is concerned with the study of algebras of linear transformation acting on finite-dimensional vector spaces, which in one guise or another arise in various parts of modern mathematics. The book's aims are: (i) to give an exposition of the basic theory of finite-dimensional algebras at a level that is appropriate for senior undergraduate and first-year graduate students, and (ii) to provide the mathematical foundation that prepares the reader for the advanced study of any one of several fields of mathematics. Indeed, the most important features of the book are the novelty of the selection of topics and the level of accessibility in which these topics are treated. The book features a relatively new approach to finite-dimensional operator algebras which is based on algebraic rather than functional-analytic methods. The reader who acquires a good understanding of the basic theory of algebras is well-positioned to appreciate results in operator algebras, representation theory, linear algebra, and ring theory.

An Introduction to Third World Theologies (Introduction to Religion)

An Introduction to Third World Theologies (Introduction to Religion)
John Parratt | 2004-06-21 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 198 | Theology
Providing the first overview of the main trends and contributions to Christian thought of Third World theologies, this book gathers essays from experts on Latin America, India, East Asia, West and East Africa, Southern Africa and the Caribbean. It analyzes the common context of the Third World theologies in their experience of colonialism and Western missions, and suggests that they provide different perspectives on what it means to be a Christian in today's world.
Reviews
The value of this work may not match up to its price-point for many, but I found it to be an invaluable introduction to the various modes of thought and theologizing being done outside of first-world contexts. Aiming to serve as an introduction to an overwhelmingly vast and complex field, (the theologies of the majority of Christianity in less than 200 pages?) this book accomplishes what it sets out to do well, providing concise summaries of the various movers and shakers in their respective continent and general directions of the dialogue and study. The short bibliographies concluding each essay provide the unitiated with a helpful path to follow for more in-depth study if so desired. This Western reader was especially forced to reconsider many aspects of hermeneutics, authority and acculteration regarding theology and the timeless message of the Church. All in all, an excellent, if not too brief work that hopefully will not intimidate too many buyers with its high MSRP.

Britain and the Papacy in the Age of Revolution, 1846-1851 (Royal Historical Society Studies in History New Series)

Britain and the Papacy in the Age of Revolution, 1846-1851 (Royal Historical Society Studies in History New Series)
Saho Matsumoto-Best | 2003-09-18 00:00:00 | Royal Historical Society | 210 | England
From the time of the Reformation Anglo-Vatican relations have typically been seen as a long history of unending antagonism and mutual suspicion, but this has not always been the case. This book sheds light on one of the most curious episodes in early Victorian history when, around the time of the 1848 revolutions in Europe, a rapprochement almost developed between Britain and the papacy, and British politicians and writers referred to the new head of the Catholic Church, Pius IX, as 'the good pope'.Integrating diplomatic, political, ecclesiastical and social history, Saho Matsumoto-Best traces the factors that brought these two traditionally hostile powers together and the reasons why this rapprochement was doomed to failure. She demonstrates how the desire to support constitutional government in Italy and to curb the activities of the Irish Catholic church led the government of Lord John Russell to build a close relationship with Pius IX, and how failure to understand the Vatican's priorities and anti-papal and anti-Catholic feeling in Britain, particularly in the context of the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in 1850, eventually destroyed this policy.BR>This study is an important and original contribution to the current debate about the nature of mid nineteenth century-Britain and sheds new light on the British role in Italian unification. It will also be of great interest to students of nineteenth-century European international and ecclesiastical history, and of the 1848 revolutions.

The Architecture of Reason: The Structure and Substance of Rationality

The Architecture of Reason: The Structure and Substance of Rationality
Robert Audi | 2001-03-22 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 304 | Philosophy
The literature on theoretical reason has been dominated by epistemological concerns, treatments of practical reason by ethical concerns. This book overcomes the limitations of dealing with each separately. It sets out a comprehensive theory of rationality applicable to both practical and theoretical reason. In both domains, Audi explains how experience grounds rationality, delineates the structure of central elements, and attacks the egocentric conception of rationality. He establishes the rationality of altruism and thereby supports major moral principles. The concluding part describes the pluralism and relativity his conception of rationality accommodates and, taking the unified account of theoretical and practical rationality in that light, constructs a theory of global rationality--the overall rationality of persons. Rich in narrative examples, intriguing analogies, and intuitively appealing arguments, this beautifully crafted book will spur advances in ethics and epistemology as well in philosophy of mind and action and the theory of rationality itself.
Reviews
"The Architecture of Reason" is a well-respected work that is somewhat unique in the current philosophic literature. Most works on rationality focus on one of two aspects - (a) epistemology and theoretical reason, concerned with justification and its connection to knowledge, or (b) practical reason, largely the subject matter of meta-ethics and moral psychology. Perhaps because of the different natures of the two fields, and the divergence in the literature, relatively few authors write with an appreciation for both.

Robert Audi, who moved from Nebraska to take the Business Ethics chair at Notre Dame shortly after writing this book, is one of the few philosophers with a deep understanding of both fields and the fascinating connections between them. This is a work dedicated to exploring the structural parallels between the theoretical and practical spheres of reason, how they are similar, and how they are different. Audi advocates an internalist view, based in what he calls a moderate, flexible foundationalism.

The work is divided into eight chapters, each roughly 30 pages in length. Chapters 1-2 provide an overview of Audi's view of theoretical reason, while chapters 3-6 detail the structural parallels between theoretical reason and practical reason, as well as the basis of concepts such as reasonableness and altruism. Chapter 7 provides an extremely insightful and detailed discussion of relativity in various forms (a concept to often bandied about without precision, even in philosophy). Chapter 8 concludes with a discussion of the global characteristics of a rational person, and how rationality can be viewed as something like a virtue concept.

All in all, this is a detailed and well-argued work that can act as an advanced introduction to the topics (especially for those with some background in philosophy, but perhaps only a light background in epistemology), but also is an important original contribution in its own right. It is also the only major work dedicated to a holistic treatment of both sides of rationality in contemporary philosophy, to my knowledge.
Reviews
I am a philosophical layman, but I am skeptical about the customer review of this book. (seller) gives you a look at the back cover. Read for yourself what other philosophers say about Audi's book.
Reviews
Having taken the better part of this last semester reading this book, I find myself with no strong inclination to rate this book in any particular direction.
As far as content goes it's rather thorough, Audi does manage to give a complete bottom up view of rationality. But, as he gets into the later stages of the book where the topic turns to ethical issues he gets a little presumptuous. Another issue I had was with Audi's homemade words. I recognize the fact that certain areas of philosophy have created their own technical nomenclature but some of his words are a bit of a stretch even for my liberal mind. Further, while not as hard to read as many other philosophy texts this was by no means a pleasure read, and if it had not been required reading I would have opted for more pleasurable tasks such as watching paint dry.
If you have a background in philosophy or epistemology (or are disposed to masochistic habits) I suggest you buy this book. After all, Audi does pull together his entire theory of rationality into one book, and this is no easy feat for anyone. But for those of you unaccustomed to technical, poorly written (for most philosophers, not to point a finger solely at Audi) philosophy texts, I say find an easier to read introductory book somewhere else.

Has your child ever wondered about the monster fish that electrocutes its prey with 600 volts? This book will engage any child (and parent) who likes fish, who is curious about nature, or who is obsessed with charismatic electrogenic fauna of the Neotropics. The opening page ("fish have fins") irked my daughter, but the next page picked up the pace and the book held her interest to the end. The photos are superb, the text is clear and engaging, and the science is 100% accurate - the author consulted experts to get every detail just right.

Computational Fluid Dynamics for Engineers: From Panel to Navier-Stokes Methods with Computer Programs

Computational Fluid Dynamics for Engineers: From Panel to Navier-Stokes Methods with Computer Programs
Tuncer Cebeci,Jian P. Shao,Fassi Kafyeke,Eric Laurendeau | 2005-06-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 396 | Engineering

This introduction to computational fluid dynamics serves as a unique advanced-undergraduate text that brings together Cebeci's lifelong experience as a teacher at the University of California and a senior scientist for Boeing Company. Conservation equations for compressible and incompressible flows are the prime theme. The text concentrates on finite difference and finite volume methods and mostly treats two-dimensional flows, while it also keeps key arguments general enough to apply to the three-dimensional case as well. It also provides methods for solving model parabolic, elliptic and hyperbolic equations, and two chapters address boundary-layer equations. The treatment of the transition from laminar to turbulent flow makes use of the en method. Further topics are grid generation methods and extensive discussions of the Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations. The book is accompanied by a CD including computer programs that have been tested in many practical applications in industrial fluid mechanics engineering.

Reviews
This is a well written book. The only problem I have with it is that it has a misleading title: Computational Fluid Dynamics for Engineers: From Panel to Navier-Stokes Methods WITH COMPUTER PROGRAMS. While the book does come with SOME computer programs (ie, FORTRAN source), there are many chapters that don't contain the source code with the included CD. This is pretty bad, especially if you'd like to write your own code. At first I thought that the publisher somehow forgot to write some of the files to the CD, so I contacted one the authors asking if he could send me some of the missing source files. It turns out that I would have to pay an extra $90 to have access to the remaining source code! No way, I'm not doing it (I'm a poor student). This was definitely a frustrating. With $50 you can get yourself a copy of the Fluent student version to validate you're own code!
Reviews
I am an aerospace engineer but have been working in experimental research for the last year when my interest in CFD came along.

This book was my first book ever bought in CFD; I went through many others from the library, but I bought this one because of its practical, and still precise and in-depth analysis of numerical methods applied to fluid dynamics.

It also dedicate a chapter to the Hess-Smith panel method applied to 2D aerodynamic bodies and it clearely gives enough details and practical steps to develop and write your own panel method code.

Every chapter has excercices at the end, but mostly, the author accompanies the expemples with codes written in fortran and reported in the CD.

The only thing that sometimes might be noticed (very lightly), are some typos or missing explanations on how he changed the notation.

A book to have for a beginner who is willing to intensevly learn CFD and computation.

Rocketeers: How a Visionary Band of Business Leaders, Engineers, and Pilots is Boldly Privatizing Space

Rocketeers: How a Visionary Band of Business Leaders, Engineers, and Pilots is Boldly Privatizing Space
Michael Belfiore | 2008-08-01 00:00:00 | Harper Paperbacks | 320 | Transportation

On June 21, 2004, SpaceShipOne, built by aircraft designer Burt Rutan, entered space and ushered in the commercial space age. Investment capital began to pour into the new commercial spaceflight industry. Richard Branson's VirginGalactic will begin ferrying space tourists out of the atmosphere in 2010. Las Vegas hotelier Robert Bigelow is developing the world's first commercial space station (i.e., space hotel). These space entrepreneurs, including Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen and Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, now see space as the next big thing.

In Rocketeers, Michael Belfiore goes behind the scenes of this nascent industry, capturing its wild-west, anything-goes flavor. Likening his research to "hanging out in the Wright brothers' barn," Belfiore offers an inspiring and entertaining look at the people who are not afraid to make their bold dreams a reality.

Reviews
I found the book informative and the topic definitely interesting, but the way the story is told leaves me with an oddly disjointed feeling which I suppose reflects the state of the private space industry. There is no denying the author's interest and enthusiasm, but the book tries to navigate a middle path between detail and characters, and ends up slighting both.

Reviews
This book is a rather basic introduction to NewSpace ideas and people. Private space flight is an exciting subject and if you are new to it, you will probably enjoy the book. Covered in some depth are: the history of XPrize and Peter Diamandis, SpaceShipOne / Scaled Composites / Burt Rutan, Richard Branson / Virgin Galactic, NASA and private spaceflight, SpaceX / Falcon / Elon Musk, Rocketplane, XCOR, Bigelow's orbital hotels, commercial spaceports. However, the author seems to be more interested in telling amusing stories ("...Suddenly Burt Rutan was wide awake, staring into the blackness of his bedroom ceiling. Out of the blackness came a spaceship in free fall... "I've got it" he said aloud...") than in the technical/scientific aspects of spaceflight. It was also disappointing to me that there are very few pictures in the book and those present are not very relevant (e.g. I'd prefer a cross-section drawing of a hybrid rocket motor to the photo of Tim Pickens riding his rocket bicycle). The book was written in 2007, so naturally you won't find there any of the newest advances in the field: the Lunar Landing Challenge (and its participants), the Space Elevator games, the first successful flight of SpaceX's Falcon 1, SpaceX's Dragon capsule, Google's Lunar Challenge. You will find much more detailed and up-to-date information just reading various NewSpace-related news sites, blogs and Wikipedia articles.
Reviews
As someone who works for one of the companies highlighted in "Rockeeteers" I find that it's not always easy explaining what we are doing to privatize Space. Michael has accurately captured the entire New Space Industry with this book. The following sentences sum up the efforts of those of us working in this field, "I could think of few things more satisfying in an uncertain world than the whoosh-BOOM! of an igniting rocket engine pouring out enough power to hurl a payload into outer space. In sharp contrast to so much of life, no hedging, equivocating, or hand-waving was possible. Rocket engineering worked or it didn't, and the mere talkers go separated from the doers in that split second between spark and fire." I frequently reference Michael's book whenever I need to portray what we do in brief.
Reviews
Michael's overview provides a sound foundation on the beginnings of the NewSpace movement. Required reading for anyone that dreams of space exploration!
Reviews

Rocketeers provides a quick introduction to the people making the current boom in private space flight happen. It is a well written book that covers the people involved in an accessible way. The advent of private space flight that may be available to ordinary people makes this an exciting time for anyone interested in space.

The author is a journalist and writer, not an engineer or technologist. This shows in the writing of Rocketeers. It is a smooth flowing easy read that focuses on personalities with only the briefest mention of the technology involved and little discussion of the economics. This makes the book entertaining and approachable, but it leaves much of the story untold. I would have liked to read more about the competing technologies and how the different companies have chosen them. The whole topic of whether these companies can possibly be economically viable is not really examined at all. That left the book feeling a little light weight to me.

Rocketeers does succeed in providing a snap shot of an interesting time. Its broad overview and focus on the personalities will be helpful to readers who have not been following these events.

Concrete folded plate roofs used to cover large open expanses of space can pose complex design problems soluble only through detailed mathematical analysis. This book introduces the engineer to practical schemes and practicalities, and goes on to provide multitudes of useful design tables, which allow linear interpolation, for a large range of various schemes of folded plate roofs to help the engineer with his designs. Design examples using both SI and USA (British Imperial) units are provided using these tables.
