Representaions of General Linear Groups (London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series)

Representaions of General Linear Groups (London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series)
G. D. James | 1984-08-31 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 160 | Mathematics
The most important examples of finite groups are the group of permutations of a set of n objects, known as the symmetric group, and the group of non-singular n-by-n matrices over a finite field, which is called the general linear group. This book examines the representation theory of the general linear groups, and reveals that there is a close analogy with that of the symmetric groups. It consists of an essay which was joint winner of the Cambridge University Adams Prize 1981-2, and is intended to be accessible to mathematicians with no previous specialist knowledge of the topics involved. Many people have studied the representations of general linear groups over fields of the natural characteristic, but this volume explores new territory by considering the case where the characteristic of the ground field is not the natural one. Not only are the results in the book elegant and interesting in their own right, but they suggest many lines for further investigation.

Rejecting Rights (Contemporary Political Theory)

Rejecting Rights (Contemporary Political Theory)
Sonu Bedi | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 1 | Law
The language of rights is ubiquitous. It shapes the way we construct our debates over issues such as abortion, affirmative action and sexual freedom. This provocative new study challenges the very concept of rights, arguing that they jeopardize our liberty and undermine democratic debate. By re-conceptualizing our ideas about limited government, it suggests that we can limit the reasons or rationales on which the polity may act. Whereas we once used the language of rights to thwart democratic majorities, Bedi argues that we should now turn our attention to the democratic state's reason for acting. This will permit greater democratic flexibility and discretion while ensuring genuine liberty. Deftly employing political theory and constitutional law to state its case, the study radically rethinks the relationship between liberty and democracy, and will be essential reading for scholars and students of political and legal philosophy.

American Headway 2: Student Book

American Headway 2: Student Book
Liz Soars,John Soars | 2001-12-06 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 160 | Education
American Headway combines the best of traditional methods with more recent approaches to make learning English stimulating, motivating, and effective.

Reviews
It's about time men spoke openly about the male-bashing sexism of the Headway books. It seems the Soars hired a 80s-style Gender mainstreaming consultant to bring these books in line with what was popular at the time, bashing or putting men down at all opportunities and boosting women whenever possible. There is not time for me to highlight all the cases of sexism in these books, but just one will show what I mean. Intended to 'put men in their place', this sexism would be better if it kept to facts, but unfortunately these books spread rumours long-since shown to be untrue, or invent or twist facts when they don't promote women or knock men. On page 57 of the Upper Intermediate book there is an exercise on radio advertisements. One of them is advertising car insurance, and points out that men are responsible for 81% of parking offenses. No arguments there. Most (nearly 100%) of delivery drivers are men, and double parking is a necessary evil of inner city deliveries. Also consider the number of men on the roads. In Germany, 75% of all drivers are men. If Britain has similar statistics, then suddenly the 81% figure doesn't look so bad! But Headway twists this statistic even more. What we hear on the radio is two men trying to park while criticizing a woman, before crashing. Yet this not a parking offense! Parking illegally, overstaying your meter time, double parking, those are parking offenses. Why do woman pay less insurance? NOT because they're better drivers, but because their crashes are cheaper! In Germany 25% of the drivers are women and they're responsible for 31% of all crashes. But because they drive more slowly and carefully, stay off the freeways and in the suburbs, don't work as delivery drivers, and don't drive while intoxicated their many crashes don't cost as much as the fewer accidents that men cause. What is really amazing is that with all their recklessness, speeding, drinking and driving and delivery work men still have fewer accidents than women! Any chance of Headway doing an article using real objective statistics? Not a chance!

But it gets worse. On page 11 exercise 7 number 5 of the B1.2 students book we learn that 'women earn on average 17% less than men for full-time work'. Do a little internet searching for objective information and what we find out is that: 'The sinister male conspiracy insinuated by feminism that keeps women's wages low is revealed to be a fantasy, as what we are looking at is simply a case of economic cause and effect. Don't study those fun and fulfilling courses like History of Art or French Lit. Everyone would love to do a 'hobby degree', especially if you have a partner to pay the bills, but you'll never get one of those jobs which require a real degree, like in Engineering, Science, Architecture or Medicine, which men don't do more often because they enjoy it, but because they know they're not going to find a woman to fund their needs if they do a hobby degree. Work as much overtime as a man. Commute as far as he does. Do a job as dirty, stressful, or dangerous. Do a job with uncomfortable working conditions, preferably working 12 hour shifts outside in winter. Be prepared to face mutilation and permanent disfigurement on a daily basis. Work 84 hour weeks. Then you'll be earning 98% of a man's salary.'

False statistics like Headway is helping spread only causes anger and frustration amongst women, and guilt amongst men, and certainly works against harmonious relations within a mixed gender class. Motherhood certainly is a hindrance against climbing the career ladder. However, this only applies to a minority of people in the world. Motherhood also prevents women from going down coalmines, etc, thus helping to give them longer lives. You can't have it all unfortunately...

As a final example, I take again the B1.2 students book, page 89 exercise 1 number 3, where students have to comment on a number of statements on daily life. Once again Headway throws in an old feminist chestnut: 'Women have a higher pain threshold than men', and in the teacher's book an 'answer' along the following lines is given (quoting from memory as the book is at work): 'Although some research seems to show that men have a higher pain threshold, many people believe that childbirth has endowed women with a higher pain threshold. We don't know how men would handle childbirth.' What Headway is recommending here is that we ignore scientific research and stick with hearsay, if it's in favour of women. Incredible! I invite all to do a bit of internet searching, and see what research has been carried out in the last years. We now know that women have two-thirds the pain threshold of men. And they make much louder noises when they feel pain. The discussion in the scietific world has now moved on to what we can do to help women to cope with higher pain levels they feel. (While men were believed to have lower pain thresholds this was just seen as a joke. But as soon as it is observed that, as all men already knew, women are the ones with lower pain thresholds, there is a sudden panic to reduce these poor women's pain. These double standards are sexist in the extreme.) The reason why women don't get Singaporean floggings is that their bodies cannot handle the level of neurogens that men's bodies can, just as men handle alcohol and drugs better. In the women's concentration camp Ravensbrück, women used to die from heart failure during floggings which were far milder than what the men were receiving in their camps. All of what I have written can be confirmed by anyone doing a bit of internet research using objective (not feminist) sources.

Another feature common to all the Headway books is their choice of men to illustrate negative adjectives and women the positive ones. In Headway's world, women are perfect and never make mistakes, always the innocent victims who have to put up with silly men. I open the workbook at random, page 8. I see 3 negative comments about men here: (1)He was sarcastic about my house. (2) His comments really hurt my feelings. (3) Q: Why is Terence always so horrible to poor Janine? A: I don't know. But I could see in her face that his criticism really hit home. Perhaps she'll finally leave him this time.

The rest is gender neutral, with nothing criticizing women, who as we know are perfect...

Wake up Headway, and Liz and John Soars! The world has moved on since the male-bashing 80s and 90s. Heard about Warren Farrell? Because of him, books like yours are already under the spotlight as being sexist and misandronistic in the 21st century gender equality scene. Your constant male-bashing and female-boosting smacks of a collective female inferiority complex which is not healthy. REMOVE the bigotry and sexism and stop bashing my male students, and some may come back to using your books. Others like myself consider that the damage you're done is far too great to ever be forgiven, and even a collective apology to all the male students in the world who've used your books. Heavily involved in adult English teaching in Germany, I intend to do all in my power to stop other schools besides my own from using them.

Reviews
American Headway is, as its title suggests, the American version of New Headway, a series written by John and Liz Soars. The original series (New Headway) has been revised in order to provide new features for American people. The greatest change in the series is using compact discs along with cassette tapes. Also, there's a change in the page numbers. Whilst New Headway starts Unit 1 in page six, American Headway starts it on page two. There's also a change in the Tapescripts section: In New Headway it starts in page one hundred fourteen, and in American Headway it starts in page one hundred twenty-four.

For the audio I will get the compact disc version from "Los tres mosqueteros", another local bookstore in Argentina that also sells books in English now.

There are two compact discs in this version: The first contains Units one to eight and the second contains Units nine to fourteen.

I would like to add that is a pleasure for me to review the series. Thanks, Mr. and Ms. Soars.

Bel Canto
Ann Patchett | 2005-01-01 00:00:00 | Harper Perennial | 352 | Fiction Other
In an unnamed South American country, a world-renowned soprano sings at a birthday party in honor of a visiting Japanese industrial titan. His hosts hope that Mr. Hosokawa can be persuaded to build a factory in their Third World backwater. Alas, in the opening sequence, just as the accompanist kisses the soprano, a ragtag band of 18 terrorists enters the vice-presidential mansion through the air conditioning ducts. Their quarry is the president, who has unfortunately stayed home to watch a favorite soap opera. And thus, from the beginning, things go awry.

Among the hostages are not only Hosokawa and Roxane Coss, the American soprano, but an assortment of Russian, Italian, and French diplomatic types. Reuben Iglesias, the diminutive and gracious vice president, quickly gets sideways of the kidnappers, who have no interest in him whatsoever. Meanwhile, a Swiss Red Cross negotiator named Joachim Messner is roped into service while vacationing. He comes and goes, wrangling over terms and demands, and the days stretch into weeks, the weeks into months.

Great Book
The book is just what I needed. I had no troble finding what I needed and it was easy to follow. The condition of the book was excellent. I would buy from this seller again.

User review
Dense but not a good reference
I ordered this book several years ago based partly on the recommendations here. I'm not sure where they went. I have tried to use this book as a reference mainly for Word and Excel and found it not helpful. I know the basics but sometimes I need a little help. There's lots of dense but selective details in the book. However try looking up basic but little used tasks such as strike through and it's not there.

Jagdwaffe: Battle of Britain: Phase One: July-August 1940 (Luftwaffe Colours: Volume Two, Section 1)

Jagdwaffe: Battle of Britain: Phase One: July-August 1940 (Luftwaffe Colours: Volume Two, Section 1)
Eric Mombeek,David Wadman,Eddie J Creek | 2001-12-10 00:00:00 | Classic Publications | 96 | Aviation
This book tells the story of the Martin B-26 Marauder, a much-maligned yet capable aircraft and its performance against one of the most controversial, mysterious and enigmatic units of the Luftwaffe, the Jadverband 44 (JV 44). It is a story that aims to set the record straight about the Marauder's combat performance as well as the desperate efforts of young German airmen to shoot it down in the final days of the war.

This is an in depth look at one of the last and defining air battles that took place at the end of WWII. The Battle over Bavaria took place in April of 1945 and was fought by the JV 44 and the Marauders of the 17th, 323rd , and 344th Bombardment Groups. The JV 44 was in Bavaria to defend the German jet aircraft production centers and the Marauders were there to bomb them.
Reviews
Eric Mombeek wraps up his four-volume coverage of the Battle of Britain for Ian Allan/CLASSIC COLOURS with this well-done volume published in 2002. Like its BoB predecessors, BATTLE OF BRITAIN: PHASE FOUR, NOVEMBER 1940-JUNE 1941 combines first-rate scholarship with numerous illustrations and gorgeous artwork to produce a winning history of this most crucial battle.

The final phase of the BoB was characterized by increasingly strong daylight fighter-bomber attacks and night attacks by bombers on London and other cities. The RAF challenged these raids with kills being scored by both sides. Yet all of the Luftwaffe efforts were pointless; England would never cave into terror attacks, especially the hit-and-miss Bf 109 jabo missions. Likewise Fighter Command was growing in strength now that their bases weren't under attack. Lastly Operation Sea Lion had been cancelled and many Luftwaffe units were being switched eastward for the invasion of Russia. So, while there were many exciting and dramatic aerial combats fought over England in these months, it was all for nought. The new year would see the RAF 'leaning into' France with small formations of bombers heavily protected by escorts; the Battle of Britain was over.

As documented in Mombeek's nicely written book, several interesting developments took place during these months. The changing nature of Luftwaffe attacks, which now utilized Bf 109 fighter-bombers, was one. In late 1940 Italy deployed units equipped with BR.20Ms, Z.1007s, CR.42s and G.50s to the Channel Front. Their subsequent raids on England were disasters. And, in November 1940, the latest Messerschmitt fighter - the Bf 109F - became operational. At least initially it would prove a mixed blessing.

As with previous volumes, BATTLE OF BRITAIN: PHASE FOUR features a number of interesting first-person accounts by Bf 109 pilots. The book is filled to overflowing with color and black & white photographs and 28 great color profiles by Tom Tullis.

All in all, a fitting end to a well-told tale. Recommended.
Reviews
Eric Mombeek continues his four-volume LUFTWAFFE COLOURS history of the Battle of Britain with this 2002 book, covering events in September and October 1940. These two months would see heavy combat and major changes in German tactics yet, at the end of October, Britain will have prevailed.

Just as Luftwaffe pressure on RAF Fighter Command bases and aircrew were having serious effects, Hitler shifted the thrust of the German attack, ordering massive attacks on London. While Londoners were to endure countless day and night attacks in the coming months, Hitler's decision effectively gave breathing space to the RAF and victory to the British. Heavy bomber losses on 15 September brought another change as Goering ordered Bf 109s to mount fighter-bomber strikes against London. And finally Hitler postponed Operation Sealion, the invasion of England. There would be more combats in the coming months but the fat lady had sung!

Mombeek does a nice job of presenting the 'big picture' during those momentous two months but is especially good at portraying the individual Jagflieger experience. Volume three features first-hand accounts by various pilots such as Hans-Ekkehard Bob, Werner Schuller and Fritz Losigkeit, a detailed bio of Franz Von Werra and diary entries from a fifth Bf 109 flier.

Volume three is a visual delight. Over 200 black & white and color photos depict Jagflieger, their aircraft, RAF opponents, air combat scenes, crashlanded Bf 109s, etc. Tom Tullis and Eddie Creek contributed 27 first-rate profiles of Bf 109s as flown by JG 3, 26, 27, 52, 53, 54, 77 and LG 2.

In summary, Mombeek's book is an excellent overview of operations during those two crucial months with lots of "I was there" accounts, tons of pix and great color artwork. A great package...Recommended.
Reviews
Section 2 Vol 2 of the Jagdwaffe series covers Phase 2 of the Battle of Britain. The book largely covers Aldertag and the battle for the airfields up to the period of September 6th. The books includes many magnificent photos (including downed Messerschmitts BF109s over English soil) and colour profiles as well as giving a good brief account of the daily fighting. The section concludes with the Luftwaffe slowing gaing the upper hand with British Fighter Command resources strained to the limit (especially that of its pilots). However this had come at a heavy price and had taken far longer than anticipated due to incorrect German intelligence. The book does show that the battle was furiously and hard fought and at this stage of the battle, victory was perhaps within the Luftwaffe's grasp.

The book also includes some individual pilot accounts of the battle and also includes a brief biography on Adolf Galland. This is yet another excellent book in the excellent Jagdwaffe series.
Reviews
Although the Jagdwaffe series is a detailed examination of Luftwaffe fighter camouflage and markings and pictorial the series also covers the history of the Jagdwaffe. This particular book looks at the German preparation and plan of campaign for the Battle of Britain and covers the opening phase of the battle from 1 July to 12 August 1940. What I particularly like is the separate boxed text of interviews of Luftwaffe fighter pilots giving a brief history of themselves and usually also describing an exciting fighter engagement. Like the previous books in the series this book includes many photographs and colour profiles of Messerschmitt 109s that would prove invaluable to the keen modeling enthusiast. This book explains how and why Messerschmitt 109 E camouflage and markings changed in this period to tone down the colours against the channel and english countryside. Also included in this book is a six page biography on Werner Molders. This is an excellent book and series and is highly recommended to those who have an interest in the Luftwaffe and specifically Volume Two to those who have an interest in the Battle of Britain.
Reviews
I bought this volume on speculation. I am a fan of the Bf 109E and very interested in the Battle of Britain. So this book fed two interests. I found the color profiles to have excellent detail and Mr. Mombeek backs up his schemes with numerous photos, most of excellent quality, some in color. He explains the markings and paint schemes with numerous color diagrames. I think that if you are a student of Luftwaffe markings or the Battle of Britain you will find this book of interest as I did. I am looking forward to obtaining the remaining three volumes of this series.

What this book lacks is text. More of an explanation or background as to why he chose that particular aircraft to depict or if the scheme was typical of that squadron or a unique set of markings.

Convex Functions: Constructions, Characterizations and Counterexamples

Convex Functions: Constructions, Characterizations and Counterexamples
Jonathan M. Borwein, Jon D. Vanderwerff | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 532 | Mathematics
Like differentiability, convexity is a natural and powerful property of functions that plays a significant role in many areas of mathematics, both pure and applied. It ties together notions from topology, algebra, geometry and analysis, and is an important tool in optimization, mathematical programming and game theory. This book, which is the product of a collaboration of over 15 years, is unique in that it focuses on convex functions themselves, rather than on convex analysis. The authors explore the various classes and their characteristics and applications, treating convex functions in both Euclidean and Banach spaces. The book can either be read sequentially for a graduate course, or dipped into by researchers and practitioners. Each chapter contains a variety of specific examples, and over 600 exercises are included, ranging in difficulty from early graduate to research level.

Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves (Applied Mathematical Sciences) (v. 21)

Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves (Applied Mathematical Sciences) (v. 21)
Richard Courant,K.O. Friedrichs | 1977-02-03 00:00:00 | Springer | 464 | Mathematics
The Springer edition of this book is an unchanged reprint of Courant and Friedrich's classical treatise which was first published in 1948. The basic research for it took place during World War II, but there are many aspects which still make the book interesting as a text and as a reference. It treats basic aspects of the dynamics of compressible fluids in mathematical form, and attempts to present a systematic theory of nonlinear wave propagation, particularly in relation to gas dynamics. Written in the form of an advanced textbook, it accounts for classical as well as some fairly recent developments. The authors intend their audience to be engineers, physicists and mathematicians alike.
Reviews
Title self-explanatory. This is a standard reference for all of shock wave theory. Many of the mathematical methods in the book are now obsolete. i.e. We do things computationally now. Still worth having on your book shelf. Excellent coverage of characteristic rays. I have made "powerpoint" presentations based on the material in this book, so it must be worth something.

Re-Mapping Exile: Realities and Metaphors in Irish Literature and History (The Dolphin)

Re-Mapping Exile: Realities and Metaphors in Irish Literature and History (The Dolphin)
Michael Boss,Britta Olinder,Irene Gilsenan Nordin | 2006-05-01 00:00:00 | Aarhus University Press | 256 | Ireland
The essays in this collection combine historical, cultural, and literary analyses in their treatment of aspects of exile in Irish writing. Some are 'structuralist' in seeing exile as a physical state of being, often associated with absence, into which an individual willingly or unwillingly enters. Others are 'poststructuralist', considering the narration of exile as a celebration of transgressiveness, hybridity, and otherness. This type of exile moves away from a political, cultural, economic idea of exile to an understanding of exile in a wider existential sense. The volume presents readings of Irish literature, history and culture that reflect some of the historical, sociological, psychological and philosophical dimensions of exile in the 1800s and 1900s. The theme of exile is discussed in a wide range of texts including literature, political writings and song-writing, either in works of Irish writers not normally associated with exile, or in which new aspects of 'exile' can be discerned. The essays cover, among others: Butler, D'Arcy McGee, Mulholland, Joyce, Hewitt, Van Morrison, Ni Chuilleanain, Doyle, and Banville.

How Writing Came About

How Writing Came About
Denise Schmandt-Besserat | 1997-01-01 00:00:00 | University of Texas Press | 207 | Sculpture
In 1992, the University of Texas Press published Before Writing, Volume I: From Counting to Cuneiform and Before Writing, Volume II: A Catalog of Near Eastern Tokens. In these two volumes, Denise Schmandt-Besserat set forth her groundbreaking theory that the cuneiform script invented in the Near East in the late fourth millennium B.C.--the world's oldest known system of writing--derived from an archaic counting device. How Writing Came About draws material from both volumes to present Schmandt-Besserat's theory for a wide public and classroom audience. Based on the analysis and interpretation of a selection of 8,000 tokens or counters from 116 sites in Iran, Iraq, the Levant, and Turkey, it documents the immediate precursor of the cuneiform script.
Reviews
This book will take you through the ruins of an ancient city in Mesopotamia and then will explain the meaning of certain tablets and clay coins found there. The author is very clear in her explanations, there are plenty of pictures and graphics which make your understanding of the text easier. This book is for those who like reading scholarly material because it is very concise and precise on the subject but it could seem dry reading to those who prefer the material to be presented in a more entertaining way.

I found it very interesting, and it helped me understand the transition from letters to numbers. I loved it!
Reviews
Holy Moley! By Internet standards, the first (and only, until mine) review of this book is of a seemingly archaeological date, seven years ago, that is. Well, I suppose this review won't make much difference when (if) it's read seven years from now! This book is, obviously, a work by a scholar, which is an entirely different category of "being smart." We don't call upon scholars to fix our plugged-up toilets or change the flat tire on our car or restore the electricity, but, if you know just enough history to be grateful to live in our consumer-friendly epoch, you'll be grateful that some out there have dedicated their lives to recording and analyzing the long process of human growth, and the growth of civilization. You can have your Back To Nature fantasies--I'll take the hot shower and electric coffee maker, thank you very much. This particular work, apparently, is a condensation of a two-volume scholarly work, one which, I am sure, that I will never read. But the current volume (the second half of which I read last night, while eating fancy crackers and drinking humble red wine--giving me a connection, I felt, to the agrarian Past of Sumer and Uruk, etc.) is about as good as it gets for laymen (me). For me, it's almost like a religious text, transcending race, language, skin color, nationalism; it's like a Time Machine that takes you back within the range of a subtle sniff of our "egalitarian" prehistoric ancestors; "egalitarian" meaning a small-population culture where you pretty much fed yourself and participated in the group without the framework of authority other than myth and ritutal. A fun read for those who have exhausted the cultural potentialities of SIMPSONS reruns. I wholeheartedly agree with the author's thesis that counting preceded writing. In fact, it was my hunch--from my own reading and thinking--that this was so that prompted me to search for a book with this theory. It just makes sense. I highly doubt that any early resident of a city started the road to high civilization talking about "ennui" or "existentialism." They talked about, "Hey! I paid you this much last month. And you owe me this much tomorrow." Makes sense to me. Just the evidence-supported argument alone that breaking the counting-beyond-three barrier took thousands of years was worth the cover price to me. The single concept (and revelation) that in no way is the faculty of counting beyond three inate to brain function and hence, inate to our modern minds, is simply stunning to me, and adds a dose of gratitude to my daily life, a realization that makes it easier to laugh off the troubles of modern life. We owe so much to the hundreds of generations of men and women who have gone before us, most just living day to day. A good read, especially when enjoyed with fancy crackers and red wine...and about forty years' worth of reading, living and reflecting. So far as what the next review will address: I ain't holding my breath--and that is a very archaelogical attitude.
Reviews
Schmandt-Besserat is not only an acknowledged leader in epigraphy, she is one of the only linguists to study the slowly evolving history of the assyro-babylonian literary culture. This book, and any other by this author, is strongly reccommended for any library or archeological department.

Definitions,Protocols and Guidelines in Genetic Hearing Impairments

Definitions,Protocols and Guidelines in Genetic Hearing Impairments
Alessandro Martini,Manuela Mazzoli,Dai Stephens,Andrew P. Read,Andrew Read | 2006-02-24 00:00:00 | Wiley | 250 | Social Sciences
This volume brings together many of the main conclusions of the European Concerted Action Programme on Genetic Hearing Impairment (HEAR). It is split into four sections, covering definitions, protocols, genotype/phenotype relationships and important Web sites.|The section on definitions aims to enable all those approaching the problems of genetic hearing impairment from different backgrounds to communicate in the same language and understand what each is doing more clearly. The definitions are of audiological, vestibulogical, epidemiological and genetic terms, together with specific terms associated with particular craniofacial abnormalities.|The second section comprises protocols for the minimal set investigation of patients and their family members with genetic hearing impairment. Relatively little work has been done in the past on the balance of disorders which may be associated with genetic hearing impairment and a protocol aiming to elucidate some of these factors in a relevant way has been defined. The final chapter in this section deals with how audiologists should relate to genetic laboratories in an attempt to reduce the confusion which has arisen in this field in the past.|The third section is concerned with the relationship between genotypes and phenotypes in non-syndromal hearing impairment in the conditions in which the genes have so far been localised and in many cases identified. The final section deals with the important Web sites within this field, such as the Hereditary Hearing Loss Web site based in Antwerp.

The Alzheimer's Answer: Reduce Your Risk and Keep Your Brain Healthy

The Alzheimer's Answer: Reduce Your Risk and Keep Your Brain Healthy
Marwan Sabbagh | 2008-01-01 00:00:00 | Wiley | 320 | Medicine
This sobering review of the current research on and recommendations for Alzheimer's argues for identifying and combating risk factors decades before symptoms appear. Like other major conditions affected by obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, among others, Alzheimer's is growing at a rapidly increasing rate. Neurologist Sabbagh has been involved in many important Alzheimer's research trials and founded the Sun Health Research Institute's Cleo Roberts Center, a facility for studying age-related diseases, located in the geriatric community–dense Sun City area of Phoenix. He explains the mechanisms by which the brain undergoes devastating changes that manifest as Alzheimer's; the differences between age-related memory loss, Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia; and ways to assess genetic liabilities and risk factors from lifestyle choices. Although treatment goals and expectations for those with Alzheimer's are modest, Sabbagh says most risk factors can be offset well before retirement age through diet, physical and mental exercise, brain-specific supplements and, in some cases, medications that lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, manage blood sugar and decrease inflammation. Sabbagh covers such concerns as exposure to toxic substances linked to neurological conditions and suggests many potent weapons to counteract development of brain plaque: omega-3 fatty acids, resveratrol, quercetin, folic acid, huperzine A, green tea and curcumin, among others. A guide to symptoms, diagnosis and treatment will prove helpful to patients and their families, while an overview of new drugs that could halt progression and possibly heal damaged brain cells offers hope for the future.

Reviews
This book is an excellent alternative to Agresti's "Categorical Data Analysis" for the analyzing of categorical data. The book is comprehensive and less mathematically demanding than Agresti. The book does a tremendous amount with contingency tables and epidemiologic types of data and has many good worked out examples.

There are a couple of features that could be improved in the next edition:

1) Give the statistical tests that are presented names.

Often statisitical procedures/tests are given and they are not given an explicit name. I think that this is an intentional practise of the authors, but I found it very confusing. For instance, there are many chi-square tests out there, each of which can be written in different ways. Why not call them "Pearson's chi-square", "Cochrane's chi-square", etc... so that the reader knows what the authors are talking about?

2) Not enough time devoted to the subject of combining simple proportions (i.e. not fourfold tables) from several samples/studies. Only one method is shown when several others exist.

3) ALL the common methods used to transform proportions should be presented and explained. For instance, the arcsine transformation is left for an exercise.

4) The writing was a bit terse and cryptic at times. I wish the authors had opted for a simpler English sentence structure and aimed to write at as low a level as practically possible. This encourages understanding of the topic rather than the development of eloquent prose.

5) The references were good but the way they were cited was not. In line author names is an outdated reference method that bogs down sentences and clutters pages with useless text. Simple numeric citation markers would have been better.

6) Bayesian methods are developed, but not a much as I might otherwise have hoped.

Rebel Daughters: Women and the French Revolution (Publications of the University of California Humanities Research Institute)
Sara E. Melzer,Leslie W. Rabine | 1992-05-21 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 312 | France
This interdisciplinary collection of essays examines the important and paradoxical relation between women and the French Revolution. Although the male leaders of the Revolution depended on the women's active militant participation, they denied to women the rights they helped to establish. At the same time that women were banned from the political sphere, "woman" was transformed into an allegorical figure which became the very symbol of (masculine) Liberty and Equality. This volume analyzes how the revolutionary process constructed a new gender system at the foundation of modern liberal culture.

Bodie, Kane, and Marcus' "Investments" is the leading textbook for the graduate/MBA investments market. It is recognized as the best blend of practical and theoretical coverage, while maintaining an appropriate rigor and clear writing style. Its unifying theme is that security markets are nearly efficient, meaning that most securities are usually priced appropriately given their risk and return attributes. The text places greater emphasis on asset allocation, and offers a much broader and deeper treatment of futures, options, and other derivative security markets than most investment texts.

Encyclopedia of Junk Food and Fast Food

Encyclopedia of Junk Food and Fast Food
Andrew F. Smith | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | Greenwood Press | 368 | Encyclopedias
From Booklist
As noted in the preface, the McDonald's sign proudly proclaiming "over 99 billion hamburgers sold" is emblematic of the proliferation of fast food. Author Smith explains that his motivation in producing this volume was "based on a deep concern with the effects fast food and junk food have upon the United States and the world." The encyclopedia is aimed at a general audience and intended to be "the primary balanced source for information about fast food and junk food."

Junk food is defined as commercial products "which have little or no nutritional value but do have plenty of calories, salt, and fats." Fast food is "ready-to-eat foods served promptly after ordering." Alphabetically arranged entries cover the types of junk food (Extruded snacks, Ginger ale, Hot dogs); specific brands (Moon Pie, Mounds Bar, Mountain Dew); companies (Frito-Lay, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Panda Express); health issues (Diabetes, Foodborne illnesses); and a variety of other related topics, from Animal rights movement, Anti-unionization, and Architecture and design to Sports sponsorships, Vending machines, and Waste. In addition to an alphabetical list of entries, there is a list of entries by topic (for example, "Bakery Goods," "Beverages"). A chronology highlights milestones in the fast-food and junk-food industry. Entries that are more specific in nature, such as Nachos and Nathan's Famous, range from a couple of paragraphs to about a page and a half, while entries covering general concepts, such as Advertising, run two to three pages. Each entry lists one or more suggested readings. Some black-and-white photographs illustrate the text.

The volume concludes with a glossary, selected bibliography, resource guide, and an index. This would be ideal for public libraries as well as undergraduate and high-school libraries. Jennifer Dawson

Review
The entries are alphabetically starting with "A&W Root Beer" (A&W was the first fast food franchise) and ending with "Yum! Brands, Inc." (the world's largest fast food company). Most entries are a couple paragraphs in length, and suggested readings follow each one. Boldface terms within an entry have their own entries within the encyclopedia. The volume begins with an alphabetical list of all the entries, followed by a list of entries by topic, and an introduction to the origin of fast food and junk food. A chronology starts with the founding of the Schweppes Company in 1783, and ends with the three major soft drink companies that agreed to a ban on selling sweetened sodas in schools in 2006. Includes a glossary. Highly recommended. All collections; all levels.Choice

In approximately 250 A-to-Z entries, each ranging from several paragraphs to several pages in length, Smith covers specific junk and fast foods (e.g., Snickers, M&Ms) and companies (e.g., Mars, McDonald's) as well as broader topics, such as the environmental and nutritional effects of these industries. Each entry includes at least one suggestion for further reading; a glossary of terms and a chronology of important events are a nice touch. Smaller libraries and libraries on a budget will find that information on some of the subjects here can also be found in other sources, e.g., Smith's Oxford work, but those needing a source focusing solely on the topic of junk food will find this fun and fascinating encyclopedia very useful. For academic and public libraries.Library Journal

[T]his volume provides a valuable record of the decline of the American diet over the twentieth century, with the transition from junk food as an occasional treat to junk food as a replacement for real food. There is a fine entry on gross-out candy, a new phenomenon of deliberately revolting confectionary; and a coolly disturbing account of hamburgers....Smith confirms that, with junk food, the joy and the horror are never far apart.Times Literary Supplement

From uniforms and conformity to packaging and pricing, common business practices are explained. Articles on automobiles, drive-ins, films and toys explore the impact of fast food chains on popular culture. Growing health issues are examined in essays on cholesterol, diabetes, nutritional guidelines and obesity. Other concerns include factory farming, globalization and genetically modified foods. Boycotts, lawsuits, protests and politics are just a few of the issues examined. This concise guide is suitable for high school, public and academic libraries.Lawrence Looks at Books

[A] fascinating examination of food culture in America....Readers will experience a variety of emotions while perusing this book -- nostalgia for the early days of the hamburger and childhood candy favorites as well as abhorrence at the descriptions of factory farming and the negative health effects of a super size-me mentality. The sheer scope of information available here makes this book a must-have resource. The extensive bibliography and suggested readings will be invaluable tools for further research.VOYA
