Reviews
Although I haven't read this book in print form, I have read it online for free. It's very authoritative and full of information. The only problem I have is that it lacks subjectivity: doesn't tell you the "problems" a certain career might have or its workload.

In conclusion, every student or non-student who's just looking for a different career path will benefit from the info in this book.

Great kid's book - purchased it for a company event as a prize to the employee's kids that participated.
Reviews
This cookbook has lots of pictures and very descriptive. The first few pages discuss the basics of nutrition. One the of the more healthier choices when it comes to cookbooks. Some of the recipes call for ingredients and cookware that not everyday people have or purchase.
Reviews
Love this book!! My 9 year old took out this book at her school library on her own. She decided she wanted to help out with cooking and making good food choices. After looking through the book I understood why she got inspired, So did I!! We decided just having the book for a couple of weeks was not good enough & we bought it for our home!!! This is a FANTASTIC Easy step by step picture book for our 3 girls!! Highly recommend this book!!!
Reviews
I bought this for my soon to be 9 year old granddaughter who has just gotten interested in cooking. Which is my passion. Thought it was a good book and hope she enjoys it.
Reviews
While educational for children, I wouldn't want anyone younger than 12 or 13 doing some of these recipes without a lot of hands-on help from adults (e.g., the roasted vegetables recipe was delicious but often dangerous re: cutting and oven use). However, I'm new to cooking "real meals" and it's been great for me!

The Endless Web: Fascial Anatomy and Physical Reality

The Endless Web: Fascial Anatomy and Physical Reality
R. Louis Schultz,Rosemary Feitis | 1996-11-11 00:00:00 | North Atlantic Books | 144 | Alternative Medicine
The result of more than two decades of research and practice, The Endless Web presents in clear, readable language a comprehensive guide to understanding and working effectively with the myofascial system, the 'packing material' of the body. Myofascia is a flexible network of tissue that surrounds, cushions, and supports muscles, bones, and organs. It also acts as a riverbed containing the flow of interstitial fluid, and is a critical influence on the immune and hormonal systems. In daily life, this connective tissue is an underlying determinant of movement quality, modd, alertness, and general well-being. The Endless Web is a fully illustrated guide to understanding how myofascia works, it supportive role within the body's anatomy, and how gentle manipulation of the myofascial tissue is central to lasting therapeutic intervention and how it can be integrated into any bodywork practice.
Reviews
I have been teaching massage for over 20 years and I think this is an excellent text. I prefer it to Anatomy Trains, although that is also an excellent text. Beginning massage therapists tend to look at the body as muscle and bone, but there are more connections in the body than that. The Endless Web looks at fascial binding in a very understandable way, which adds a new and powerful dimension to a massage therapist's work.
Reviews
I am very interested in connective tissue and myofascia and how it works in the body ... but I am finding this book a difficult read.

Reviews
I just got this book and have reccommended it to a friend LMT and she also bought the book recently. If your wanting to read more on Myofascial and its effects on the body this book will be a good read
Reviews
Before I read this book I had never really considered the functioning of connective tissue as a "web-like" structure within which bone and muscle articulate. The authors contend, starting with embrionic anatomy and onward, that the c.t. forms a bed within which cells differentiate. From this view point of c.t. being a primary base for physical form, we are shown how all parts of the web are connected, and create "bands" that ideally are nether too tight or too loose. I didn't know much about Rolfing either, but apparently this bodywork deals specificly with c.t. Good book, great publishing company.

How Fra Angelico and Signorelli Saw the End of the World

How Fra Angelico and Signorelli Saw the End of the World
Creighton Gilbert | 2002-01-01 00:00:00 | | 200 | History
The frescoes of the Cappella Nuova in the cathedral of Orvieto have fascinated visitors from Michelangelo to Freud and Czelow Milosz because of their dramatic portrayal of the end of the world and the Last Judgement. Creighton Gilbert's study draws on previously overlooked documents to explain the commissioning of this extraordinary cycle of paintings, begun by Fra Angelico in the early 1400s and completed a half-century later by Luca Signorelli. In contrast to most other art historians, who ascribe the iconographic and formal structure of the paintings to Signorelli, Gilbert contends that his predecessor, Fra Angelico, devised the entire programme of decoration. Gilbert also situates the cycle in the contexts of liturgical practice, humanistic studies and the rich body of texts and images shaping the Renaissance conception of the coming of the Antichrist and the world's final moments. "How Fra Angelico and Signorelli Saw the End of the World" examines every element in the Cappella Nuova's architecture and complex decoration, which not only represents the coming of the Antichrist, the end of the world and the Last Judgement but also, on a high dado, features portraits of Dante and other poets, scenes from their texts and sinuous, grotesque ornament. Although Dante's likeness has long been recognized, Gilbert establishes that his great epic, "The Divine Comedy", exerted a profound influence on the chapel's iconographic programme.

Paramhansa Swami Yogananda: Life-portrait and Reminiscences

Paramhansa Swami Yogananda: Life-portrait and Reminiscences
Sri Sailendra Bejoy Dasgupta | 2006-06-05 00:00:00 | iUniverse, Inc. | 148 | Religious
"The writer of this book gathered most of the material for this book directly from his personal talks with Swami Yoganandaji himself, as well as from personal talks with Yoganandaji's childhood companion Satyanandaji and Swamiji's relatives, friends and students. But most importantly, this writer was made aware of many hitherto unknown things via three particularly essential ways. First: this writer was blessed with Yoganandaji's affection and trust. Second: this writer was directly initiated by Swamiji's guru Sriyukteshvarji and he was regularly in Sriyukteshvarji's physical company. During this time, this writer was privileged to hear his Gurudev speak descriptively about Yoganandaji carrying out his duties when he was still living in India, as well as Sriyukteshvarji's own feelings at the time and the Divine Grace around such activities. And third: this writer was the exceptional recipient of Swami Satyanandaji's great affection and trust. At an incalculably precious moment in a time when the secret methods of Kriya Yoga sadhana were being spread in India and subsequently in the world, the goddess of fate placed upon this writer this undertaking."-From the Dedication
Reviews
I was surprised how much I liked this. Yes, it shows some of Yogananda's short comings but it also shows his greatness. I thought the person who wrote this thought Yogananda was a very great man. He had his faults but all in all I was very impressed with Yogananda as presented in this book.

This is the grown-up version of Yogananda's story. He was human but a really great human.

This is highly recommended. Also, my thanks to the people who made this book possible. It's really, really good.
Reviews
The original Autobiography of a Yogi is uniformly positive and inspiring, with institutions and initiatives simply popping into being.

In this book, written by a close associate and contemporary in India, more insight is given into what it took (warts and all) to make Yogananada's early projects happen on a human level, with the teams of characters assisting, particularly Swamis Dhirananda and Satyananda.

It also sets the context of a Calcutta profoundly influenced by the Babaji line of gurus as well as the Ramakrishna/Vivekananda line.

I do not believe this book diminishes Yoganandaji, quite the opposite it shows his ultimate success with the challenges of team and project building on a human level, as well as the divine level, already so beautifully encapsulated in the Autobiography itself.
Reviews
First of all, I must warn future readers who revere Yogananda and consider him as their guru, would find this book quite difficult to read. The author, who is a disciple of Sri Yukteshvar, presents a very impartial and honest account of Paramhansa Yogananda. This account also includes unflattering behavior of the great guru while he visited India in 1935.

Before I proceed further, one should realize that the author has great reverence for Yogananda and gives him credit where credit is due. However, the author also revels to the reader that Sri Yukteshvar was not always pleased by Yogananda's behavior when he returned to India. Of course, this new information was not available to the public in the "Autobiography of a Yogi" written by Yogananda himself.

This is an important revelation as well. This shows that if a person is Self-Realized and has attained a high spiritual understanding, he/she will still be prone to errors of judgment, behavior and understanding.

In conclusion, the reason why I gave this book a 5 star rating is because of the new and not always positive information about Yogananda. This shows that Yogananda is "human" after all. I would not recommend this book to most SRF members who view Yogananda as their guru as the information would be pretty hard to digest. However, if a person who admires Yogananda and reads this book with a deep sense of understanding and still revers Yogananda, then this book is for them.
Reviews
FOR ANYONE WHO READ YOGANANDA'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND OTHER WRITINGS THIS BOOK GIVES A LOT OF INSIGHT INTO HIS EARLY LIFE IN INDIA AND WHAT HE EXPERIENCED WHEN HE FIRST CAME TO AMERICA. ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK IS BECAUSE IT IS WRITTEN BY SOMEONE WHO KNEW YOGANANDA IN PERSON AND SOME OF THE INFORMATION CONVEYED FALLS OUTSIDE THE "PARTY LINE" PROMULGATED BY SELF REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP; I.E. IT SHOWS THAT YOGANANDA HAD A HUMAN SIDE WITH MANY PROBLEMS AND CONFLICTS TO RESOLVE AND HOW HE HELPED AND WAS HELPED BY OTHER PEOPLE.

Currency Union and Exchange Rate Issues: Lessons for the Gulf States (New Horizons in Money and Finance)

Currency Union and Exchange Rate Issues: Lessons for the Gulf States (New Horizons in Money and Finance)
Ronald MacDonald,Abdulrazak Al Faris | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Edward Elgar Pub | 202 | Economics
This book - written by leading academics and practitioners in the field - brings together cutting edge research on exchange rate regime and monetary union issues. There is a particular focus on the implications for member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) which is itself working towards forming a monetary union for the Gulf States.

The relatively dramatic movements in the US dollar in the recent past, and also in the early 1990s, have called the practice of pegging to the US dollar into question for a group of countries that predominantly rely on hydrocarbons as their primary export. The book considers the key issues which must be addressed by the GCC in trying to form a monetary union for the Gulf countries and also the rigid pegging of member states' currencies to the US dollar. The proposed monetary union raises clear issues in terms of the appropriateness of such a regime for these countries and whether, for example, the necessary institutional mechanisms are in place ahead of the proposed union.

Currency Union and Exchange Rate Issues brings together the perspectives of a group of experts who focus on these important issues, and provide analysis of the policy options. Academics, policymakers and postgraduates in international finance will find much to consider and learn from in this informative book.

Dr. Orr aims to provoke with this book, and he succeeds. His tone can be off-putting, his assumptions may not be entirely correct. But for anyone who has ever wondered whether business-as-usual is really sustainable in the face of modern problems, he provides an abundance of ideas about how we might order human affairs differently. For those who want to take action against climate change, he provides encouragement and inspiration by example. He makes a case that might lead to despair, but calls us to heed our better angels and overcome the most monumental challenge in history.

The Cambridge Companion to St Paul (Cambridge Companions to Religion)

The Cambridge Companion to St Paul (Cambridge Companions to Religion)
James D. G. Dunn | 2003-11-10 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 324 | Saints
The apostle Paul has been justifiably described as the first and greatest Christian theologian. His letters were among the earliest documents to be included in the New Testament and, as such, they influenced Christian thinking from its very beginning. This Companion provides an important assessment of the apostle as well as a new appreciation of his continuing contemporary significance. With eighteen chapters written by a team of well-known international Pauline specialists, the collection will have wide appeal and be an invaluable point of departure for subsequent studies.
Reviews
The Cambridge Companion To St. Paul is considered to be an authoritative text on the life of the apostle Paul. With detailed analyses on Paul's theology, it is a `must-read' for all wishing to understand the man who, apart from Jesus himself, has influenced and continues to be the foremost influence in Christianity today. Paul was a controversial figure questioned not only by the Jews with whom he originally oppressed the early followers of Christ but also by Christ followers themselves with whom he later worked. While many a writer has portrayed Paul as a `liberator' who allowed the early followers of Christ to `shake the shackles' of Judaic legalism others such as John Dunn, editor and contributor to the book, have focused more on Paul's work as an `integrator' who sought to include gentiles as well as Jews in his doctrine of `justification through faith'.

Biblical scripture shows us that Paul was a Benjamite Jew born in the city of Tarsus and brought up in Jerusalem under the tutelage of a rabbi by the name of Gamaliel. Paul was therefore well-educated and had as one of the strongest convictions before his conversion, to persecute and destroy anyone who professed a faith in Christ. His encounter with Jesus in a vision on the road to Damascus was the watershed event that lead to his transformation. After a subsequent visit to Jerusalem, during which he was despised by the Jewish authorities, Paul returned to Tarsus where, it is speculated, he continued with his education. It was not until sometime later that Barnabas brought Paul to the city of Antioch where, for the first time, he served as a church leader.

Paul's own writings tell of his identity early on in his adult life not only as a Jew but as a pharisee who persecuted Christ followers and placed great importance on his religious zeal. This makes his subsequent conversion to Christianity ever more remarkable. As Stephen Barton points out in one of the early chapters, Paul's vision of Jesus lead him to his calling as an apostle of Christ to the gentiles. Paul thus counteracted the pharisitic tradition of the time by proclaiming that those who were not tied into Jewish law- the gentiles- could be justified through faith because of the, "redemptive death of Christ" (p.167). He recognized that in Jesus his own hope for the Messiah had been fulfilled and that the blessings of that hope should be available to all. In his own summary of Paul's life, Timothy Johnson outlines how he saw himself not only as an ambassador of God, suffering through pain and hardship as Jesus had, but also as an apostle laying down the foundations for the church. He was flogged and beaten by those who despised him. Indeed, much of his teaching would not have been done out in public but more likely in private houses where he could talk in safety, away from his enemies. Paul kept up the hope of his converts not only through his own visits but also through letters, gifts and prayers.

Bruce Longenecker's treatment of Paul's letter to the Galatian church brings to light the encouragement that he frequently offered to his followers through his writing. Perhaps the most outspoken of all his letters, that to the Galatians focused on counteracting the Jewish Christians whose insistence that gentiles maintain Jewish law he found unacceptable. The purpose of the gospel was of course to bring the good news of Christ into the lives of all regardless of their background. Paul's message was clear- reconciliation and justification with God did not come as a result of following the law but through a Christ-centered faith.

The establishment of the church in Corinth would have secured the power that the gospel needed to gain momentum. Corinth had after all become an important trading port between the southern Peloponese and the Greek mainland. Because of the materialistic focus of the Corinthian way of life, Paul's building of the church there could only have been seen as a great victory. But his letters to the Corinthians tell of formidable divisions between its members caused amongst other things by misunderstandings on the importance of sex within marriage, a lack of appreciation of the need to keep away from pagan ritual and a blurring of the differences between men and women. Brian Rosner has emphasized how critical was the need for the church to act corporately in all such matters so as to counter those who sought to adversely influence their teachings.

Paul clearly had a vision that broke the boundaries of his initial Jewish upbringing. Indeed, as Robert Jewett notes in his chapter on Romans, one of his primary purposes for writing to the Romans was to seek help for his plans to open a church in Spain- a plan that was never realized because of his trial and execution. Part of Paul's appeal involved breaking down barriers between the different sections of Roman society declaring that Christ had died that all may live. While the Roman culture tended to focus on social status, with many a Jew placing emphasis on their higher level of spiritual righteousness, Paul once again taught how mere obedience of the law was insufficient. Morna Hooker's own discussion in the book on Paul's letter to the Philippians likewise shows his steadfast focus on Christ even as close as he was to his death.

We are still not certain about the date of Paul's death although, as Paul Haacker indicates in his chronology of Paul's life, it is believed that he died in Rome in approximately 64 AD after being sent there by Festus to face trial in Caesar's court. In his chapter on the early church, Calvin Rotzeil concludes that while the teachings of Paul appear to have had little impact on several of the early church fathers after his death (neither Polycarp nor Ignatius referred to him extensively), others such as Tertullian and Iraeneus rescued his name from obscurity while fighting their war of words against the Gnostic adherent Marcion. Both Marcion and the later Gnostics such as Valentinus misinterpreted and misused Paul's writings, citing statements made by Paul to the flesh and blood as indicative of an earth totally set apart from their `alien god of the heavens'- a claim that was vehemently dismissed by Tertullian and Iraeneus.

The Cambridge Companion To St. Paul is an invaluable resource for those wishing to delve further into these and other aspects of Paul's letters. While a full understanding of the theological principles outlined in several of the chapters may not be possible for those without a formal grounding in Christian theology, the book nevertheless stands out both in its detail and its currency. It is therefore highly recommended for those wishing to read expert opinions on the man who fought for the universal accessibility of Christianity and gave millions across the world the opportunity to experience the power of a Christ-centered faith.

Reviews
The Cambridge Companion Series is designed to provide a solid introduction to a particular topic for new readers and non-specialists. This particular volume provides such a service by acquainting the reader with the current issues being discussed in the area of Pauline Studies. The most appropriate audience for this text would seem to be college or seminary-level students being introduced to the life and letters of St. Paul for the first time. Edited by James D.G. Dunn, this book contains articles about St. Paul from some of the foremost Pauline scholars today.

Beyond simply providing commentary on specific Pauline epistles, this text offers articles which discuss topics of the life of St. Paul himself. The introduction, written by Dunn, provides key information so the beginning student will understand some of the debates in Pauline scholarship over the past two centuries. To this end Dunn briefly surveys F.C. Baur, the History of Religions School and the New Perspective.

After the introduction, the book is divided into four primary sections. The first section which is titled "Paul's life and work" includes the following contributions: "Paul's Life" (Klaus Haacker); "Paul as missionary and pastor" (Stephen C. Barton). This section is primarily designed to show the reader what historical information about the life of the Apostle can be gleaned from biblical texts.

The second section titled "Paul's letters" examines the Pauline epistles themselves with general commentary on the text. This section contains the following articles: "1 and 2 Thessalonians" (Margaret Mitchell); "Galatians" (Bruce Longenecker); "1 and 2 Corinthians" (Jerome Murphy-O'Connor); "Romans" (Robert Jewett); "Philippians" (Morna Hooker); "Colossians" (Loren T. Stuckenbruck); "Ephesians" (Andrew T. Lincoln); "The Pastoral Epistles" (Arland J. Hultgren).

One particular area of this section which will certainly be of interest to the reader just beginning to study the Pauline epistles is the portion which discusses whether or not the Pastoral Epistles were written pseudonymously (142-143). While Hultgren, in the end, concludes that these texts were written pseudonymously, the reader is provided with the arguments, in five clear and simple to understand points, which have caused the author to hold these views. The reader is thus able to see the data supporting both sides of the argument and is able to better understand the dilemma for which there will never be an absolute solution. Rather than simply casting the opposing side in a pejorative light, Hultgren clearly shows why such a belief can be held.

The third section titled "Paul's theology" includes the following contributions: "Paul's Jewish presuppositions" (Alan F. Segal); "Paul's Gospel" (Graham N. Stanton); "Paul's Christology" (L.W. Hurtado); "Paul's Ecclesiology" (Luke Timothy Johnson); "Paul's Ethics" (Brian Rosner). Since many readers of the New Testament are often puzzled by Paul's use of scripture, Segal's article will also likely be of interest to the beginning reader. In this article Segal discusses such topics as Paul's handling of scripture (e.g. Paul's use of midrash in Gal. 3:6-14) and what Paul's presuppositions may have been as a Pharisee (164-71).

The final section which is simply titled "St. Paul" includes the following articles: "Paul in the second century" (Calvin J. Roetzel); "Paul's enduring legacy" (Robert Morgan); "Contemporary perspectives on Paul" (Ben Witherington, III). Witheringon's article which discusses contemporary perspectives has several facets which will be helpful to the unfamiliar reader. One such area is that Witherington juxtaposes Alan Segal's views about Paul's Jewish-ness against opponents of such a view (257-58). The debate which he singles out is the degree to which Paul was a "good Jew" (257). Other sections of Witherington's article provide broad overviews of such topics as feminist and liberationist approaches to the Pauline Epistles as well as a discussion of understanding the corpus through the lens of rhetorical criticism.

Readers unfamiliar with the technical terminology used in biblical studies will greatly appreciate the glossary provided at the beginning of the text. While this text is certainly broad in focus it provides a solid foundation from which the reader is able to venture out into the larger world of Pauline studies. It seems this book would be helpful in an introductory course and would aptly serve as a supplement to a New Testament introduction text book.
Reviews
This collection of essays is a fine collection, offering challenges to interpretations of Paul that have dominated Western Protestant Christendom since the Reformation. I only have one caveat to offer. Many seem to have as a particular, though implicit, target the so-called 'Lutheran Paul.' The previous reviewer writes, in a concise precis of this critique, 'Rather than preach a reductive "doctrine of justification", Paul emerges from his letters (via this book) as being someone who has a rather mystical understanding of the eucharist as union, sees salvation as pertaining to a particular community (not merely individuals), and preaches "justification" as being far more than a type of legal status: it is being brought into the family of God (via baptism) as a child of God, participating now in God's new work in the world.' There is only one problem - with a little nuance here and there, that is precisely the Lutheran understanding of Justification in its relation to the Incarnate Christ's Person and Work. In short, we would look at all that and say, yes, that's justification all right. So let this book enlighten you as to the many fresh readings of Paul that you can find out there, but realize that the putative target of many critical challenges is in fact a straw man. In fact, if you're not careful it just might make you a Lutheran.
Reviews
I have never taken the time to study St. Paul; having read both the letters of Paul and the deutero-Pauline letters in the New Testament, this book comes as a welcome next step in understanding him. As those who have read him know, Paul is not always the easiest to follow, especially given his intricate weaving together of different styles of thought within his letters: Pharisaic/Rabbinic, Hellenistic, apocalyptic and early Christian.

This book covers what you would expect a "companion" to cover: Paul's life and context, historiographical issues, his letters and his purported letters (the "deutero-Pauline epistles": those letters in the New Testament that most scholars do not believe were written by Paul). However, several other essays whose topics might be unexpected - such as interpretations of Paul in the second century (the most enjoyable and fascinating essay in the book for this particular reader) - also find their way into the book.

While many simply see Paul as some sort of proto-Reformation-era de-/re-former (a la Luther), this book moves beyond these tired (and, it would seem at this point, largely incorrect) interpretations of Paul. Paul is not so easily reduced to a late-Medieval Roman Catholic reformer; he stands - however ambiguously and uncomfortably (for us no less than him!) - without such hermeneutical concealing. Rather than preach a reductive "doctrine of justification", Paul emerges from his letters (via this book) as being someone who has a rather mystical understanding of the eucharist as union, sees salvation as pertaining to a particular community (not merely individuals), and preaches "justification" as being far more than a type of legal status: it is being brought into the family of God (via baptism) as a child of God, participating now in God's new work in the world. The reduction of Paul to legal[-istic?] terminology fails to see him as a member of a community who preached to and from that community; it ignores the fundamentally relational element of Paul's thought.

This book is well worth the read. It is not difficult reading, but having read Paul first will greatly increase what you pull from this book. While it may be true that Paul has managed to upset just about everyone since the time of his writing, these essays are highly informative and helpful "for those with ears to hear". The Cambridge Companion to St. Paul engages and mediates him well.

In the Midst of Wars: An American's Mission to Southeast Asia

In the Midst of Wars: An American's Mission to Southeast Asia
Edward G. Lansdale | 1991-01-01 00:00:00 | Fordham University Press | 385 | 20th Century
Edward Geary Lansdale truly became a legend in his own time. His mission to the Philippines in the early 1950s resulted in the defeat of the communist-led Hukbalahap movement and the subsequent election of Ramon Magsaysay, arguably the most popular president that the people of the Philippines have known. In 1954, Lansdale was sent to Vietnam where he hoped to repeat the program of counterinsurgency that was so successful in the Philippines. His ideas of land redistribution, grassroots village democracy, and elimination of corruption in the South Vietnamese government and army were gradually superseded by massive air and ground operations. When Lansdale returned to the United States for duty in Washington, he never ceased to promote the advancement of deomocratic ideology as the key tool to "win the hearts and minds of the people of Asia." This book is history as Edward Lansdale saw it.

Lansdale became romanticized in The Quiet American by Graham Greene, The Ugly American by William Lederer and Eugene Burdick, and Le Mal Jaune by Jean Larteguy. His biographer, Cecil Currey (Edward Lansdale: The Unquiet American), considers Lansdale an all-too-human figure who was a maverick military thinker and a skeptic about conventional U.S. policy in Asia.
Reviews
Lansdale's book is one of those forgotten treasures for those studying insurgent warfare strategy. General Lansdale had an enormous fund of experience, contacts, and cultural knowledge of the Phillipines and his memoir about his role in defeating the Huk insurgency in 1950 tells us a lot about all the RIGHT things to do. Small footprint, work with and cultivate local leaders, disingage the population from the insurgents...all of this takes enormous personal communication skill and rapport along with the common sense of a beat cop. If anything, you'll learn that not everyone in the military is cut out for fighting insurgent warfare. After his success in in the Phillipines he was sent to Vietnam while the French were getting ready to pull out in 1954-1955. He details what the French had done wrong and how some of the French officers "got it" but unfortunately didn't have the support of superiors...something important to remember. Landsdale outlines the situation so that you can tell without his saying so, just when the point of no return for the French had been reached. This is not only a great book about insurgent warfare strategy but just a great read as well. No long drawn out tales of "there I was facing 50 insurgents armed with just my pocket knife" just a recitation of real events as he experienced them, including the not so exciting but essential grunt work insurgent warfare calls for. If you can find a copy...get it.
Reviews
This book is one of the best I have read so far. The first half of the book was about Lansdale in Philippine as an advisor to Phillipine's president at the time. I have been researching a lot into the period that the second half of this particular book covered. The author (Lansdale) had been very honest when he wrote this book, a must read for anyone with questions about what happpened in Vietnam in the time period from 1954 to 1960. I finally read something that had something positive about President Ngo Dinh Diem. This book tell the truth about Ngo Dinh Diem from someone who know him best because Lansdale had acted as Diem's political advisor and best friend. The book is a first hand account (sort of like a memoir) of someone who were actually there, and witnessed every ordeal that had happened. A fine book if you wanted to read something truthful. You don't have to believe me, so I will stop now so you can go ahead and read this wonderful book. By the way, have fun reading :) :) Gwynevere

Fires in the Mind: What Kids Can Tell Us About Motivation and Mastery

Fires in the Mind: What Kids Can Tell Us About Motivation and Mastery
Kathleen Cushman | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Jossey-Bass | 208 | Non-fiction
In Fires in the Mind: What Kids Can Tell Us About Motivation and Mastery, Kathleen Cushman reveals that kids have lots to tell us about motivation and mastery. She skillfully draws on the collective wisdom of 160 young people, weaving together their words and insights into a vivid exploration of "what it takes to get really good at something." It's impossible to choose just a few highlights from this book because it's filled with over 200 quotes from the students who participated in the Practice Project, each one contributing a valuable perspective on the journey towards expertise.

As one of the teachers who participated in the Practice Project, I was captivated by Kathleen's approach to this collaborative meaning-making process. She spent two intensive days and two follow-up days with 20 twelfth-graders and me at The International School of the Americas in San Antonio, Texas. She interviewed the students, had them interview each other, coached them in interviewing the adult experts they knew, and facilitated rich, thought-provoking discussions about the essential questions that inspired Fires in the Mind: What Kids Can Tell Us About Motivation and Mastery.

Listening intently and gently prompting students to "tell me more," Kathleen drew them deeper and deeper into the examination of their own experiences, as well as their observations of adult experts and teachers. Through these conversations about the development of expertise, Kathleen guided the students to uncover rich insights into the process of learning and shed new light on what teachers can do to facilitate that process.

Kathleen's gift to us in Fires in the Mind: What Kids Can Tell Us About Motivation and Mastery is her thoughtful analysis of what these 160 students' comments, taken together, tell us about motivation, practice, learning, and achievement. Throughout the book, she offers reflection questions, checklists, and activities for teachers and students to connect their own experiences to the ideas being discussed. This book brings student's voices into an important conversation about motivation and mastery, and invites educators to join the conversation by asking themselves and their students "what does it take?"

delivered in a timely manner. would buy from this seller again. book was in awesome condition.
Reviews
This book is a fabulous resource for anyone who wants a better understanding or really any decent understanding of biochemistry. What I liked most about this text is that each section starts generally (ie: purpose of the process, how it ties in as a whole, key steps and enzymes/products) then moves to the specifics (ie: all the steps, enzymes, products, and other details that are nice to know but not likely to be tested on). The book also constantly incorporates links between different processes/cycles and reminds you of where certain products are used, things that interfere with enzymes/products, etc. I will give the disclaimer that this book is a bit more prose versus quick bullet point review, although it is informative without being overly detailed, yet is rich in information. It is an easy read though. I'd recommend this book, it helped me out alot my first year of med school.
Reviews
I purchased this as a gift for an outstanding student to use at college. It is colorful, concise and speaks well to the the reader who has to master a difficult subject.

It's imperative that students of science understand how pervasive chemistry is - not just a course to "get through" - a body of knowledge which gives insight into how their science "works".

Well-organised and well-written!

PC Underground: Unconventional Programming Topics

PC Underground: Unconventional Programming Topics
M. Rasch | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Abacus Software | 547 | PCs
Here's a book for intermediate to advanced programmers that covers techniques normally left out of other programming books. PC Underground is not a criminal's handbook; instead it's an in-depth programmer's guide to system level programming. It covers a diverse range of unconventional programming topics and includes extensive coverage of graphics.
Reviews
When I first started reading this book, I thought it was really great, because it told me how to do things I had never heard of before. But after some time, when I got further in programming, I discovered that most of the information in it is rather useless nowadays. Also, there are (in my Dutch copy of the book) many, many spelling mistakes, and errors in the layout, too. (Tables missing, empty pages where there should have been sourcecode). Overall, this is not a bad book, it's just outdated, and alot of the information just isn't correct.
Reviews
Well its the only book I've ever seen on demo coding. It may have been valid around 4 years ago but things have changed since then. The first mistake of this book is using pascal for a majority of the source code. Pascal was used only as a shell for Assembly, and treated like a high-level assembly language. But has very little use today. The second mistake is the graphical content of the book is very weak. It doesn't explain nor supply source code for any decent effect; and nothing new to speek of, even considering when the book was released. The 3d engine is useless. The only strong point is it has lengthy descriptions to several MOD based music file formats, and a decent explanation on how to code a mod player.
Reviews
Pc Underground is a very intense programming tutor dealing with many special effects seen in "demos" or cutting edge computer games. The information is given in such a manner that your preferred programming language does not matter. This book also contains essential sound card information not published by other sources on making "module" players that support SB and GUS cards. Simply put, if you are at all interested in game programming or demos, this is a must have!

Miracle Cure: How to Solve America's Health-Care Crisis and Why Canada Isn't the Answer

Miracle Cure: How to Solve America's Health-Care Crisis and Why Canada Isn't the Answer
Sally C. Pipes | 2004-09-01 00:00:00 | Pacific Research Institute | 219 | Personal Health
America has wealth, innovation, and access to the best of everything. So why is our health-care system so broken? Why does it cost more than ever and deliver less? How do we solve the problems of the uninsured and seniors who lack drug coverage?

And equally important, why is the Canadian system, widely touted as a sparkling example of compassion and universal access, actually a disastrous model to be avoided?

This book cuts through the fear and confusion surrounding health-care policy. It explains in clear and simple terms why the system is broken and how to fix it.
Reviews
As an American who now lives in Canada, Sally Pipes is not at all correct. There are NO waiting lists and I call my doctor and I get in that day. I LOVE the health care system here. I used to pay for my health insurance before I moved to canada and now I don't and I get the same care for free!! Plus I get all the name brand drugs if I need them. When I was living in the US, my health insurance turned me down for pre-natal vitimans, which I thought was ridiculious. I don't know where sally gets her facts from.
Reviews
Interesting that the One-Star reviews below are from people who did not read the book and do not comment on its actual contents.

If the writer has a particular viewpoint -- golly, maybe that's what motivated her to WRITE A BOOK. Duh. It would be a pretty bleak literary world if writers were not allowed to have opinions, or to write as a response to their own intellectual motivations.

Those of you who'd slam her simply becuase you can verify that her political and economic opinions vary from yours, might actually learn something from considering another viewpoint and indulging in the information that supports that viewpoint. If you read her book, and can spar with its content, fine, knock youself out.
Reviews
If you Google for Pacific Research Institute (Sally Pipes is President and CEO) and browse their offerings, you'll see strong evidence that this organization exists to promote conservative ideas and 'debunk' progressive 'myths' about women's issues, the environment, fairness, health care, globalization, drug importation, etc etc.

Here's a blurb from the "About" section of the PRI site:

_______________

The mission of the Pacific Research Institute (PRI) is to champion freedom, opportunity, and personal responsibility for all individuals by advancing free-market policy solutions.

Since its founding in 1979, PRI has remained steadfast to the vision of a free and civil society where individuals can achieve their full potential.

Put simply, public policy is too important to be left just to the experts. Individuals are the real decision makers when it comes to their schools, health care, and environment.

_______________

So take Sally's book with a boulder-sized grain of salt and find other sources of info about Canada's system to supplement your education on the issue. I'm sure it's not perfect (Canadian system), but Sally Pipes has a strong idealogical bent (and conservative connections) that call into question her severe condemnation of the Canadian system.

Disclaimer: I have not read the book, but have just heard portions of her lecture at the Commonwealth Club on public radio and was alarmed enough at her horror stories about waiting lists to want to find out more about her background.

Oh, and Google Sally Pipes too! You'll turn up plenty of conservative links as well as some links that vigorously contest her characterizations of the Canadian system.

Thank goodness for Google and for Amazon comments!
Reviews
People who write books like this get invited to all the right places in this country. The reason is simple. Our system is is only possible medical system. It's not that other systems do not exist - it is that people in our system cannot even IMAGINE that other viable systems exist, must less that they function quite well. We never hear about them except in the negative. Sally Pipes would never be allowed to speak in our system unless she came with a satchel of critcisms of her own system. That was her ticket - that's how she got on stage. There's a pervasive sort of censorship going on here made all the worse because people in this country don't know how pervasive that censorhsip is. We are a free and open and intellectually closed shop.

Sally Pipes will hit the forum circuit down here and get invited to all the interview shows. This is because she criticizes the Canadian system. Were she to praise it, she might as well be sitting in an igloo.

Reviews
I love when a writer nails a problem and also recognizes the political and social difficulties we will face in trying to effect the solution. This Pipes has done well. As a young physician, I soon realized that the health of my community depended more on how I VOTED than how well I was trained. Now as a physician of 20 years, I have seen first hand how the current health care system fosters a sense of entitlement to "free" care with no accountability or responsibility on the part of the consumer(patients): here in the US not Canada! The solution is NOT more of the same government intervention and insulation of patients from their health care decisions. But try telling this to the media, academia or even politicos who are either ignorant of the facts or fearful of their constituents.

Should be required reading for all MDs in training.

Decentralization Policies in Asian Development

Decentralization Policies in Asian Development
Shinichi Ichimura | 2008-12-29 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 440 | Economics
This book explores the important topic of fiscal decentralization in Asian countries, and focuses on how government finance and administration are being reformed to bring budgetary decisions closer to voters. The focus on Asia is especially important because all countries in this region have been undergoing serious fiscal reforms in the past decade. They include one of the biggest decentralization reforms in Indonesia, significant reforms in democratic Philippines and Vietnam which are in transition, and Japan, whose fiscal reconstruction program is covered extensively. India and China, which are also covered, are very special cases because of their size and because their policies must fit decentralization into a significant economic growth scenario.

Contents: Promise and Reality of Fiscal Decentralization (R Bahl); Political Decentralization in Asia: Case Studies/A Review of Decentralization:; Trinity Reform of Local Fiscal System in Japan (H Ikawa); Political Decentralization and Fiscal Reconstruction in Japan (T Ihori); China's Decentralization and Its Impact on Urbanization (X-J Zuo); Fiscal Federalism in India - Trends and Reform (M G Rao); Administrative Reform in Taiwan - An Uneasy and Unfinished Political Task (J N Shih); Decentralization in the Philippines After Ten Years - What Have We Learned? Imaging of Orbital and Visual Pathway Pathology (Medical Radiology / Diagnostic Imaging)

Imaging of Orbital and Visual Pathway Pathology (Medical Radiology / Diagnostic Imaging)
Wibke S. MĂźller-Forell,N. Pfeiffer,K.. Sartor,E. Boltshauser,S. Kollias,W. Lieb,E. Martin,W.S. MĂźller-Forell,S. Pitz,U. Schwarz,W. Wichmann | 2005-12-20 00:00:00 | Springer | 458 | Internal Medicine

This is one of the first books to deal with imaging of pathology of the entire visual system. It is divided into two parts, general and special. In the general part, the most important basics of modern imaging methods are discussed, but with less emphasis on the physical background than in purely neuro-/radiological textbooks. Chapters are devoted to the meticulous presentation of imaging anatomy of the orbit and intracranial visual pathway. The latest knowledge on the indication, technique, and results of functional MR imaging is presented. Visual system impairment in the pediatric age group is also discussed. The special part of the book provides detailed descriptions of the symptoms and clinical and imaging findings in individual patients with orbital and intracranial pathologies. This book is specifically designed to be of value not only to neuroradiologists but also to ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons, oto-/rhino-laryngologists, and neurologists who require more detailed information on these special diseases.

Storage Networks: The Complete Reference

Storage Networks: The Complete Reference
Robert Spalding | 2003-03-04 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill Osborne Media | 564 | Osborne-McGraw-Hill
Keep tabs on the vast array of storage network technologies, including SAN, NAS, Fibre Channel, file systems, virtualization, database storage, and snapshots. Plus, discover emerging technology standards such as iSCSI, InfiniBand, and storage provisioning. A profoundly useful resource for troubleshooting and coping with legacy issues such as interoperability and storage resource management.
Reviews
I picked this up in a remainder bookshop, and I can see why. The useful content could be summarised in two sheets of A4. It is littered with diagrams, each virtually identical to the last. The text, in explaining diagrams, refers to labels that do not exist. It appears not to have been proof-read (revised paragraphs can appear after the version they were presumably intended to replace). The first 200 pages are irrelevant, offering vague generalisations repeated ad nauseam. Then SANs are introduced and treated dismissively. Altogether the worst book on any topic that I've ever read.
Reviews
The book explains the concept of Storage Network very well.

Firstly, it tells you why the enterprise need a storage network by discussing the current storage problem. Then, it introduces how storage network can help. The explaination is both descriptive and quantitative, which is helpful when you explain to your customer how good storage is.

Next, the components of storage network are introduced. It let you understand the features of the building block of storage network.

SAN and NAS, the two different storage network, are explained in details later. This part tells several userful architecture of using SAN and NAS.

After this, Design of Storage Network is explained to the reader. It tells you how to go through the cycle of capacity planning, performance monitoring, change management and problem handling.

Appendix include several real world case that shows how people analyzed the storage problem, decision they made to use storage network. It's particularly useful for technical consultant.

Diagram of architecture and calculation of storage network performance are always available when they are needed.

Overall, it's a great book that let you understand Storage Network and how to design, implement and maintain it.

Try wrapping your brain around this sentence:

"Unless the hardware and firmware release levels are inventoried and tracked in conjunction with the network, the NAS systems become unassociated storage servers unbound to the confines of the network in which they operate."

Or this:

"The corollary, or trade-off to this condition, is the economics of speed and capacity to price."

I'm sure the contributors worked very hard to fill up the 526 pages of this book, but oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.....
