Beyond Nature-Nurture: Essays in Honor of Elizabeth Bates

Beyond Nature-Nurture: Essays in Honor of Elizabeth Bates
Michael Tomasello,Dan Isaac Slobin | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Psychology Press | 392 | Mental Health
Beyond Nature-Nurture: Essays in Honor of Elizabeth Bates is a very special tribute to the University of California at San Diego psycholinguist, developmental psychologist, and cognitive scientist Elizabeth Ann Bates, who died on December 14, 2003 from pancreatic cancer. Liz was a force of nature; she was also a nurturing force, as is evidenced by this collaborative collection of chapters written by many of her closest colleagues and former students. The book covers a brilliant career of wide-ranging interdisciplinary interests, such as the brain bases of language in children and adults; language and cognitive development in normal and neurologically impaired populations of children; real-time language processing in monolinguals and bilinguals; and crosslinguistic comparisons of language development, language use, and language loss. In this volume the contributors provide up-to-date reviews of these and other areas of research in an attempt to continue in the directions in which she has pointed us.

The genius of Bates is founded on a deep dedication to science, supported by an enduring sense of humor. The volume is introduced by the editors' collection of "Bates's aphorisms," the wisdom of which guide much of the field today: "[T]he human capacity for language could be both innate and species-specific, and yet involve no mechanisms that evolved specifically and uniquely for language itself. Language could be viewed as a new machine constructed entirely out of old parts." (Bates & MacWhinney, 1989) The volume also contains a list of her many important publications, as well as some personal reflections of some of the contributors, noting ways in which she made a difference in their lives.

Beyond Nature-Nurture: Essays in Honor of Elizabeth Bates appeals to international scholars in the fields of developmental psycholinguistics, cognitive science, crosslinguistic research, and both child and adult language disorders. It is a state-of-the-art overview of many areas of cognitive science, and can be used in a graduate-level classroom in courses designed as seminars in any of these topics.

Intersections de deux quadriques et pinceaux de courbes de genre 1: Intersections of two quadrics and pencils of curves of genus 1 (Lecture Notes in Mathematics) (French Edition)
Olivier Wittenberg | 2007-03-22 00:00:00 | Springer | 222 | French

Acad. Sci. Paris 342 (2006), no. 4, 223--227] y sont démontrés.

Community, Conflict and the State: A Manifesto for Community Well-Being

Community, Conflict and the State: A Manifesto for Community Well-Being
Charlie Cooper | 2008-10-15 00:00:00 | Palgrave Macmillan | 224 | Social Policy
Cooper analyzes how notions of "community," "conflict," "dangerousness" and "safety" have been used and understood in British social policy. By offering a conceptually grounded treatment of these themes, the book seeks to encourage the reader to reflect on the practical policy-oriented application of these ideas under New Labour, particularly in relation to "community safety." The final chapter concludes by revisiting theses four core notions, and in doing so, seeks to expose the myths and contradictions that commonly accompany broad-range concepts of this nature.

Last Landscapes: The Architecture of the Cemetery in the West

Last Landscapes: The Architecture of the Cemetery in the West
Ken Worpole | 2003-06-15 00:00:00 | Reaktion Books | 192 | Photo Essays

Last Landscapes explores death and the landscape of the cemetery. The picturesque village churchyard; the tightly packed "historic cities of the dead" such as the Jewish Cemetery in Prague; the war cemeteries of Northern France; the modernism of the Stockholm Woodland Cemetery; the graveyards of North America -- in discussing the history and culture of these architectural expressions of memory and loss, Ken Worpole also -locates the national, religious and romantic attitudes they express. This evocative book, which also examines the contemporary memorialization of artists such as Rachel Whiteread and Ian Hamilton Finlay, contains more than 100 color pictures.

Reviews
For landscape architects, historians and planners, this book is an excellent study of burials and memorials in Western cultures. It helped me see U.S. cemeteries and their art in a greater context. Much of the book discusses how burial/memorial places relate to daily life, and speculates how such places will change along with changes in Western society.

Claude Diderich | 2009-03-23 00:00:00 | Wiley | 364 | Investing
Diderich describes tools and techniques, which can be used to develop quantitative models for actively managing investment products, and focuses on how theoretical models can and should be used in practice. He describes the interaction between different elements of an investment process's value chain in a single and consistent framework. A key focus is placed on illustrating the theory with real world examples. At the end of the book the reader will be capable of designing or enhancing an investment process for an investment or portfolio managers products from start to finish.
* Increased pressure to add value through investments makes this a hot topic in the investment world
* Combined theoretical and practical approach makes this book appealing to a wide audience of quants and investors
* The only book to show how to design and implement quantitative models for gaining positive alpha
Reviews
Think of this book perhaps as providing a meta-alpha framework. It explains an approach that lets you assess and implement different alpha models. Many risk based models are described. The mathematical treatment is rather advanced. By way of example, you are or should already know at a detailed level the ideas behind CAPM (Capital Asset Pricing Model).

One important section talks about portfolio construction algorithms, and how to get total risk from specific and systematic sources.

For institutional investors, the book recommends the use of benchmarks. Indeed, it is hard to imagine such an investor not using benchmarks these days. Several sources of benchmarks are proferred.

The agency problem is also addressed. Where this distinguishes responsibility for different parts of a portfolio return.

Measuring Risk Aversion (Foundations and Trends(R) in Microeconomics)

Measuring Risk Aversion (Foundations and Trends(R) in Microeconomics)
Donald J Meyer,Jack Meyer | 2006-09-15 00:00:00 | Now Publishers Inc | 112 | Economics
The measurement of the propensity to accept or reject risk is an important and well researched topic. Measuring Risk Aversion summarizes, discusses, and interprets the published research on this topic for decision makers who maximize expected utility. Estimates of the magnitude of relative risk aversion range widely from near zero to values approaching one hundred, and whether the slope of the risk aversion measure is positive, negative or zero is an unsettled question for many measures, including relative risk aversion. Measuring Risk Aversion show that a substantial part of this variation is due to the differences in the outcome variables used in the analysis. Measuring Risk Aversion provides a detailed discussion of the adjustment of risk references and how to go about making such adjustments to a common scale. By adjusting all information to this common scale, results across studies can be easily summarized and compared, and the body of information concerning risk aversion can be examined as a whole rather than as individual parts.

The Theory of Evolution and Dynamical Systems: Mathematical Aspects of Selection (London Mathematical Society Student Texts)
Josef Hofbauer | 1988-10-28 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 352 | Biology
Product Description: This textbook is an introduction to dynamical systems and its applications to evolutionary game theory, mathematical ecology, and population genetics. This first English edition is a translation from the authors' successful German edition which has already made an enormous impact on the teaching and study of mathematical biology. The book's main theme is to discuss the solution of differential equations that arise from examples in evolutionary biology. Topics covered include the Hardy-Weinberg law, the Lotka-Volterra equations for ecological models, genetic evolution, aspects of sociobiology, and mutation and recombination. There are numerous examples and exercises throughout and the reader is led up to some of the most recent developments in the field. Thus the book will make an ideal introduction to the subject for graduate students in mathematics and biology coming to the subject for the first time. Research workers in evolutionary theory will also find much of interest here in the application of powerful mathematical techniques to the subject.

This book was not enough for me. This book offers a basic overview of security and does not prepare for the exam. I wish I had used an additional source for the exam.
Reviews
These other guys wo gave it 5 stars must be smoking something funny.

I think Crayton forgot to include actual information that was relevant to the exam.

The book was a GOOD OVERVIEW of basic securtiy, but it lacked the breadth of information needed to pass the exam.

The sample exams in the at the end of the chapters and on the CD-Rom don't even come close to preparing you for the exam.

Shouldn't followed my heart on a stude guide and gone with Syngress.

PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY WITH THIS ONE.

He doesn't deserver to get paid for writing this guide.
Reviews
After reading this book and completing the Security+ exam, I found out that some material on the test was not covered in the book. While most was, there was also additional information that was not listed as objectives for the Security+ exam.

I would recommend this book to learn more about the Security principles, however to complete the exam do not use just this book. I would also recommend the ExamCram as required reading prior to taking the test.
Reviews
Just past the Security+ test with this guidebook. IT was a great investment and well worth the money compared with the other higher priced books. The information regarding secure ports, protocols and network infrastructure security was on for the test. However, I do have several years of network security experience and do not recommend that anyone take this test without some hands on and class work. I highly advice purchasing this book if you are going to take the test...
Reviews
This book helped me to pass the Security+ test on the first try. The concepts and questions in this book were so close to the ones on the exam it wasn't funny. The authors of this book really know their stuff and have obviously put it into writing.

This book is highly recommended for people who want to really pass the test. If you don't have much experience with network security, you should at least take a course before taking this exam

The Classical and Quantum 6j-symbols. (MN-43)

The Classical and Quantum 6j-symbols. (MN-43)
J. Scott Carter,Daniel E. Flath,Masahico Saito | 1995-12-11 00:00:00 | Princeton University Press | 168 | Mathematics
Addressing physicists and mathematicians alike, this book discusses the finite dimensional representation theory of sl(2), both classical and quantum. Covering representations of U(sl(2)), quantum sl(2), the quantum trace and color representations, and the Turaev-Viro invariant, this work is useful to graduate students and professionals.

The classic subject of representations of U(sl(2)) is equivalent to the physicists' theory of quantum angular momentum. This material is developed in an elementary way using spin-networks and the Temperley-Lieb algebra to organize computations that have posed difficulties in earlier treatments of the subject. The emphasis is on the 6j-symbols and the identities among them, especially the Biedenharn-Elliott and orthogonality identities. The chapter on the quantum group Uq(sl(2)) develops the representation theory in strict analogy with the classical case, wherein the authors interpret the Kauffman bracket and the associated quantum spin-networks algebraically. The authors then explore instances where the quantum parameter q is a root of unity, which calls for a representation theory of a decidedly different flavor. The theory in this case is developed, modulo the trace zero representations, in order to arrive at a finite theory suitable for topological applications. The Turaev-Viro invariant for 3-manifolds is defined combinatorially using the theory developed in the preceding chapters. Since the background from the classical, quantum, and quantum root of unity cases has been explained thoroughly, the definition of this invariant is completely contained and justified within the text.
Reviews
This book arrived from the book seller extremely fast. I ordered it at the end of a trip to visit a colleague, and it was in my mailbox by the time I got home. The trip took a few days. I'm a fan of Amazon's used book service. The book is very nice. It is a nice supplement to Kaufman and Lins's book about Temperley-Lieb Recoupling Theory and Invariants of 3-Manifolds. It is also nice to read in conjunction with Frenkel and Khovanov's Duke paper on the graphical representation of the dual canonical basis. I particularly like this book's pictures, such as the movie/cartoon type picture of moving 2-complexes to explain the 6j symbols as relating to the skeleton of the tetrahedron. I also like the graphical proof of the Elliott-Biedenharn identity. I have a few questions about all these things that do not appear in the books. For example, in Theorem 3.12(1) they state an identity for a sum with an alternating sign. Is this also related to Rota's q-analogue of the principal of inclusion, exclusion? It would be nice if there was a book that reviewed this topic from all the different perspectives: quantum spin systems, quantum invariants for geometry, quantum algebra, combinatorics and quantum information theory. But this book is a classic and I'm very glad I bought it.
Reviews
This book is an excellent introduction to the concepts and techniques used to define invariants of closed 3-dimensional manifolds using the representation theory of U(sl(2)). Starting with the well-known results in the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of SL(2) via the Clebsch-Gordan theory, one can decompose the tensor product of these representations in two ways. The two decompositions can be compared using recoupling theory, with the coefficients being the ubiquitous 6j-symbols, so familiar to physicists in the theory of angular momentum. The orthogonality and Elliott-Biedenharn identities of the 6j-symbols have a geometric interpretation as the union of two tetrahedra. The quantum analog of these results for sl(2) leads to the Turaev-Vivo invariants of 3-manifolds, with the Elliott-Biedenharn identity corresponding to an Alexander move on a triangulation of a 3-manifold and the orthogonality condition corresponding to a Matveev move on the dual 2-skeleton of a triangulation.

The book could thus be considered an introduction to the theory of "quantum topology". The authors employ many diagrams to illustrate the beautiful connections between topology and algebra using the reprensentations of U(sl(2)) and the "quantized" version where the representation spaces are homogeneous polynomials in two variables that commute modulo a parameter. These constructions are generalizations of the ones that are employed in studying exactly solved models in statistical mechanics using the Yang-Baxter equation. This theory is now called quantum groups, even though strictly speaking, the objects dealt with are more general than groups and the adjective "quantum" means only a lack of commutation up to a parameter (usually called q). Very interesting is the way in which braid groups appear as realizations of quantum representation spaces. Quotient representations have to be considered since in general the representations of the braid group are not semi-simple.

For a representation of Uq(sl(2)) the authors define trace, called the "quantum trace", in this representation which gives the required invariants. These invariants however are not finer than other 3-manifold invariants unfortunately. The authors do show to what extent two 3-manifolds with the same Turaev-Viro invariants are similar, and show the equivalence between the Turaev-Viro and Kauffman-Lins invariants. These invariants are examples of topological quantum field theories, which have grown out of considerations from high energy physics, and which will no doubt continue to be of considerable interest in the future.

Did My Neurons Make Me Do It?: Philosophical and Neurobiological Perspectives on Moral Responsibility and Free Will

Did My Neurons Make Me Do It?: Philosophical and Neurobiological Perspectives on Moral Responsibility and Free Will
Nancey Murphy | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press | 352 | Psychology
A Brilliant Resource!

As part of a solid and well thought through academic review, Murphy and Brown suggest that popularizations of recent developments in neuroscience and philosophy have begun to stimulate public discussion. However, they suggest that many popularizers are not only physicalists but also ardent reductionists. Essentially the main theme of their argument seems to be to counter the position that all physicalist accounts of the human condition need necessarily be reductive.

On this basis, they move toward the development of a theory that avoids the hangovers of Cartesian materialism and causal reductionism by viewing the human condition as part of a self directed, self causing system. They achieve this by drawing on the seminal work of leading thinkers likes Juarrero, Deacon, Ellis, Sperry, Van Gulick, Dennett and Damasio (to name but a few). Of central importance to Murphy and Brown's argument appear to be concepts like emergence, supervenience and downward causation, all of which enable the possibility of higher and lower ordering principles, interlevel causality and dynamic processes.

Even if you don't agree with the final conclusions or ultimate positions of these authors; the book is a brilliant resource for anyone wanting to understand more about current scientific and philisophical debates underpinning contemporary neuroscientific research. Highly recommended!

Commutative Algebra: with a View Toward Algebraic Geometry (Graduate Texts in Mathematics)

Commutative Algebra: with a View Toward Algebraic Geometry (Graduate Texts in Mathematics)
David Eisenbud | 1995-03-30 00:00:00 | Springer | 797 | Mathematics
Commutative Algebra is best understood with knowledge of the geometric ideas that have played a great role in its formation, in short, with a view towards algebraic geometry. The author presents a comprehensive view of commutative algebra, from basics, such as localization and primary decomposition, through dimension theory, differentials, homological methods, free resolutions and duality, emphasizing the origins of the ideas and their connections with other parts of mathematics. Many exercises illustrate and sharpen the theory and extended exercises give the reader an active part in complementing the material presented in the text. One novel feature is a chapter devoted to a quick but thorough treatment of Grobner basis theory and the constructive methods in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry that flow from it. Applications of the theory and even suggestions for computer algebra projects are included. This book will appeal to readers from beginners to advanced students of commutative algebra or algebraic geometry. To help beginners, the essential ideals from algebraic geometry are treated from scratch. Appendices on homological algebra, multilinear algebra and several other useful topics help to make the book relatively self- contained. Novel results and presentations are scattered throughout the text.
Reviews
People tend to have strong feelings about this book. In my opinion, the people who dislike it are those who expect it to be like a typical graduate-level math book. This book is extremely atypical for a math book; it's not meant to be read linearly, and the topics in it do not follow a typical logical dependency. Personally, I find it to be outstanding; my only complaint about it is that I wish there were more books like it!

Commutative algebra and algebraic geometry are extremely difficult subjects requiring a great deal of background. This book is written as a sort of intermediary text between introductory abstract algebra books with a full and exposition of algebraic structures, and advanced, highly technical texts that can be difficult to follow and grasp on a technical level. As such, this book focuses on developing intuition, and discussing the history and motivation behind the various mathematical structures presented. It assumes that most of the other aspects of the subject, including both the elementary expositions, and the more advanced technical details, can be found elsewhere (although, believe me, this book certainly has its share of both elementary expositions and advanced technical details!)

I think this book is actually better for self-study than for use as a textbook. Most of the people I have known who have used it as a textbook have been frustrated with it. Either way, it needs to be supplemented by other books. Personally, on algebra, I like the Dummit and Foote, Isaacs, and Lang books. Those three books have very little overlap with each other, and very little overlap with this book, and they offer a very useful difference of perspectives where they do overlap! I also would recommend reading the more elementary book by Cox, Little, and O'Shea, which can help you get a feel for the subject of algebraic geometry. Many people see this book's primary purpose as preparation for Robin Hartshorne's "Algebraic Geometry". I can't say, however, how effective it is at that purpose, as no matter how far I get in this book, all but a few sections from that book still remain quite far beyond my grasp.
Reviews
Well, the strength of this book lies in where it takes you. There is so much material here that when finished, you'll be prepared for a lot. Personally I think it is too wordy (my preferance is Atiyah & MacDonald) and the typesetting overall isn't all that impressive, so read up or consult other texts before/during your first encounter. M.Reids book is a better place to start.
Reviews
I purchased this as a book of reference. When I want to know something about Commutative Algebra (while reading Hartshorne's Algebraic Geometrry), I like a standard book of reference. But it seems a good book to learn commutative algebra aswell.
Reviews
Some proofs are somewhat abstract to the beginner. Although you are forced to check them on the paper, I think it is very good for the study. Also, you need a professor to instruct you, because in math, any language could only express the part of the oringins. Anyway, algebraic geometry is the course that you have to have a good professor to help you, otherwise stop study this field. In one word, it is a very very good book, so read it slowly!!!!!!
Reviews
If one is interested in taking on a thorough study of algebraic geometry, this book is a perfect starting point. The writing is excellent, and the student will find many exercises that illustrate and extend the results in each chapter. Readers are expected to have an undergraduate background in algebra, and maybe some analysis and elementary notions from differential geometry. Space does not permit a thorough review here, so just a brief summary of the places where the author has done an exceptional job of explaining or motivating a particular concept:

(1) The history of commutative algebra and its connection with algebraic geometry, for example the origin of the concept of an "ideal" of a ring as generalizing unique factorization.

(2) The discussion of the concept of localization, especially its origins in geometry. A zero dimensional ring (collection of "points") is a ring whose primes are all maximal, as expected.

(3) The theory of prime decomposition as a generalization of unique prime factorization. Primary decomposition is given a nice geometric interpretation in the book.

(4) Five different proofs of the Nullstellensatz discussed, giving the reader good insight on this important result.

(5) The geometric interpretation of an associated graded ring corresponding to the exceptional set in the blowup algebra.

(6) The notion of flatness of a module as a continuity of fibers and a test for this using the Tor functor.

(7) The characterization of Hensel's lemma as a version of Newton's method for solving equations. The geometric interpretation of the completion as representing the properties of a variety in neighborhoods smaller than Zariski open neighborhoods.

(8) The characterization of dimension using the Hilbert polynomial.

(9) The fiber dimension and the proof of its upper semicontinuity.

(10) The discussion of Grobner bases and flat families. Nice examples are given of a flat family connecting a finite set of ideals to their initial ideals.

(11) Computer algebra projects for the reader using the software packages CoCoA and Macaulay.

(12) The theory of differentials in algebraic geometry as a generalization of what is done in differential geometry.

(13) The discussion of how to construct complexes using tensor products and mapping cones in order to study the Koszul complex.

(14) The connection of the Koszul complex to the cotangent bundle of projective space.

(15) The geometric interpretation of the Cohen-Macauley property as a map to a regular variety.

The Multiplicities of Internet Addiction

The Multiplicities of Internet Addiction
Nicola F. Johnson | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Ashgate | 166 | Non-fiction
Overuse of the internet is often characterised as problematic, disruptive, or addictive, with stories frequently claiming that online use interferes with relationships, or that 'excessive' time in front of computer screens is unhealthy. People joke about suffering from withdrawal if they cannot check their emails and some parents worry about their children's use of computers, wondering whether it is to the detriment of other life experiences normally associated with childhood. Is it possible that people, both young and old, are addicted to computers and Internet use?"The Multiplicities of Internet Addiction" contests the claim that computers - specifically internet use - are addictive, arguing that use of the internet is now a form of everyday leisure engaged in by many people in Western society and one which is reflective of the benefits and employment of microcomputers within society. Offering an analysis of the nature of addiction alongside an evaluation of the current day usage of computers, this volume explains how new learning spaces have developed which are also sites of leisure. These sites challenge traditional notions of childhood as the environment in which people are positioned is increasingly digitised. With a discussion of this everyday practice constituting both leisure and learning in this digital age, "The Multiplicities of Internet Addiction" informs our understanding of the discourses surrounding internet addiction and our grasp of the emerging relationships between leisure and our learning, as well as the increasing blur between our private and public spheres. Presenting a detailed empirical study of home computer use, this book will be of interest not only to sociologists of culture and popular culture, but also to scholars of media, ICT and education.

Doing Quantitative Research in Education: with SPSS

Doing Quantitative Research in Education: with SPSS
Dr Daniel Muijs | 2004-05-24 00:00:00 | Sage Publications Ltd | 240 | Education
This book provides an introduction to using quantitative methods in educational research. The author writes for non-mathematical students, avoiding the use of mathematical formulae wherever possible. No prior knowledge of quantitative methods is needed to use this book. The author's approach features

· a realistic approach, using actual databases

· an emphasis on the use of effect sizes

· a user-friendly approach, based on the latest version of SPSS throughout.

The use of two real educational datasets keeps the content relevant, and shows students the imperfections and problems which they will meet in real-life research. The datasets use common international measures and access to the datasets, allowing students to practice and answer the questions that follow each chapter, is available though the book website.

This book is for researchers and students studying research methods in education. It is suitable as a main textbook for quantitative methods courses, as well as a resource for researchers in this field.
Reviews
This book is a lifesaver. I'm working on my doctoral thesis and like the Lone Ranger, this book came to my rescue!
Reviews
This book is a sort of hybrid, crossing a primer on basic stats with an SPSS manual. Having already had a basic introduction to research stats, I would have preferred it if the book would have dispensed with the basic stats and provided more depth and more examples in SPSS, including factor analyses and more information on general linear model calculations. That said, if you're looking for an introduction to or a refresher on research statistics including research design, validity, reliability and generalizability plus some guidance on applying this information to SPSS, this would a good choice.

The general information on statistics is nothing groundbreaking, but it is described in an informal, almost conversational tone with plenty of examples from education research. The book's strength is showing you exactly how to run each test in SPSS, including screen shots. Another plus is the guidance in interpreting SPSS output. In my experience, one of the biggest challenges in interpreting results with SPSS is that more information than you need is provided. The screen shots used in this book help to clarify by circling relevant information and discussing why it is relevant. Those who are more advanced in their understanding of statistics may find this annoying, though, because the author tends to dismiss output as "not important", when it does have an underlying purpose.

The book does lose a few points for the numerous spelling errors the editor let get through (a typical example is in the Table of contents : "Want is ANOVA?").

If you're looking for more in-depth information on research statistics that's also understandable to novices as well as those with additional experience (but no SPSS), I HIGHLY recommend "Your Statistical Consultant" by Newton & Rudestam. For SPSS, I haven't used it myself, but I have had Norusis' "SPSS Guide to Data Analysis" recommended to me by both professors and grad students.
Reviews
At last, a book that not only explains statistics for educational research clearly, accurately and accessibly, but also gives step-by-step instructions - with screen shots - for how to carry out each procedure using SPSS. Muijs' book is a must-have for every education major, as well as for arts graduates doing postgraduate qualifications in education. I will be using it this year to introduce my postgrads, most of whom have backgrounds in the arts, to the stats they need for their courses; and I'll urge them to buy their own copies. This will not only give them a ready reference book, but will also, I'm sure, reduce significantly the numbers of anguished emails and last-minute one-to-one tutorials I succumb to in the frantic fortnight before term papers are due. Bless your heart, Daniel Muijs.

Handbook of Clinical Drug Data

Handbook of Clinical Drug Data
Philip Anderson,James Knoben,William Troutman | 2001-09-11 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill Medical | 1104 | Reference
"...will be useful to all health care professionals in a clinical setting." - Review of the previous edition from the Australian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy
*Comparison charts compare and contrast drugs within the therapeutic classes, enabling readers to decide which is the best drug to use and prescribe
*Written from primary literature, not compiled from drug manufacturers promotional material
*Provides a wealth of clinical information on the use and misuse of drugs not found in any other drug reference
Reviews
I can see that the last edition of this book received poor reviews (even if the sample size was miniscule). But I can say that this has been the most helpful drug reference that a clinician can have, particularly if they are in a position where they are looked at to offer expertise on how to manage drug therapy. The sections on Patient Instructions, Adverse Reactions and monitoring parameters are especially useful, as are the notes and drug class charts.

What makes this such an incredible reference - particularly while participating on rounds - is how concise and informative it is, while putting each monograph into the context of what information is most helpful to your choice of agent and how to manage it. You are not only provided with information that is pertinent to the specific drug, but with information that contextualizes its proper use within each therapeutic category. Some bumpkin in the last edition's comments complained that patients are not prescribed classes of drugs, but individual drugs. That makes me curious as to how he decides to go with one medication over any other in that class. And I can only hope his criteria are as objective, concise and informative as this guide. That's a hard combination of demands to achieve, and yet Handbook of Clinical Drug Data pulls it off admirably, in my estimation.

I'll wait until the newest edition comes out this April to purchase another copy for work. I hope it continues in the tradition of the previous two, and best of luck to the publisher. In a field that is as information-rich as it is constantly changing, Handbook of Clinical Drug Data definitely stands out and deserves recognition among the available guides and texts. There is no better pocket guidebook for a clinical pharmacist to use and I would advise any pharmacy student, both those whom I regularly precept and any others, to set aside their on-line or paperback editions of Lexi-Comp for at least a few months and pick up a copy of this.
Reviews
I started with this book back in approximately 1985 in pharmacy school now I own the 10th version, can't wait for the 11th, it is a very handy quick reference. I highly recommend it for the student as well as the professional.

User review
inexpensive way to learn Linux using free ubuntu distro
excellent book for a low price. I have used it to teach Linux for the past few years - each year upgrading to the current edition

User review
Far better than Ubuntu Linux Secrets
This is the book to buy if you want to learn practical things about how Ubuntu works from a beginners point of view.

I just read Ubuntu Linux Secrets which is far worst, in the sense that it provides more clutter than practical and fun things like the Beginning Ubuntu Linux does.

This books lacks chapters about Programming and Ubuntu Server but overall I think is much better than Ubuntu Linux Secrets.

I'd recommend it over the other book listed in my review.

It's great for beginners, if you want to buy a book to learn about it. :3 Really informative and has a CD as a list of commands on every chapter.

The Great Goddesses of Egypt

The Great Goddesses of Egypt
Barbara S. Lesko | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | University of Oklahoma Press | 319 | Egypt
Reviews
It would have been nice if the seller had said it was an old, discarded library book. The book itself is OK, but I was disappointed to find out that the person selling it didn't disclose the fact that it was a discarded library book. I don't know why, but that bothers me.
Reviews
I bought this book because it was recommended in another book by Geraldine Pinch. I also recognized the author, Barbara Lesko, whose name is also attached to several collaborative works such as _Pharaoh's Workers: The Village of Deir el-Medina_. I was expecting a work of similar caliber, one that would present scholarly conclusions that rested squarely on the evidence presented. Frankly, I was disappointed.

This book does present some interesting bits of historical trivia, I will give it that. I could tell where Pinch got her citations from Lesko's information. There's also a bit of information on festivals toward the end of _Goddesses_ that I found new and illuminating. But to get to these juicy tidbits, I had to slog through what essentially amounted to academic bra-burning. After first contending that, just because neighboring civilizations also had primitive Mother Goddess creatrix-figures, prehistoric Egypt just HAD to have them as well, Lesko then goes on to paint Hathor as an 'invention' of the 'male-dominated' Heliopolitan clergy and Mut as a 'wise crone' whose union to Amun was a political convenience. Then she spent a chapter of glowing review on Isis, ending on the statement that "she was salvation". By the end of it, I found myself wondering if this author is a closet Dianic Wiccan, and that is not the sort of impression I need to come away with after reading what's supposed to be an scholarly work.

So readers, take this book with a grain of salt. She does dig up some little-known information on several goddesses, but the info is best taken separately from her overtly gender-biased assertions.
Reviews
Written by an egyptologist, this book is well-researched and yet at the same time easy to read and provides information lots of information in one book that I have only been able to glean from many different texts. It includes info on how the goddesses were viewed over time in relation to the culture and to the male gods. I thoroughly enjoyed it.The Great Goddesses of Egypt
Reviews
Basically, an adequate book for beginners, but nothing original or new. Ms. Lesko takes other scholars' ideas, most notably Dr. Jan Assman and waters them down for popular consumption. This is acceptable for an amateur egyptologist like Ms. Lesko to do as long as the original work is cited. Fortunately, she uses good judgement in choosing scholarly works that are exceptional. Serious students of Egyptology, however, should go right to the source and forego this book.
Reviews
This is a great reference and in depth exploration into the many goddesses of a land I love....Egypt. It is not a picture book of any sort, it's power is in it's informational material.I found this book on my quest for knowledge of Hathor. This book gave me more then enough...and opened my eyes to interest in other deities of Egypt. I highly recommend it!

Payment for Environmental Services in Agricultural Landscapes: Economic Policies and Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries (Natural Resource Management and Policy)

Payment for Environmental Services in Agricultural Landscapes: Economic Policies and Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries (Natural Resource Management and Policy)
Leslie Lipper,Takumi Sakuyama,Randy Stringer,David Zilberman | 2009-01-13 00:00:00 | Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FA | 283 | Economics
In recent years, development policy has responded to an increasing concern about natural resource degradation by setting up innovative payment for environmental services (PES) programs in developing countries. PES programs use market and institutional incentives in order to meet both environmental and poverty alleviation objectives. However, their optimal design, implications for the rural poor, and how these initiatives integrate into international treaties on global warming and biodiversity loss are still being discussed. This book addresses these issues by scrutinising analytical tools, providing policy insights and stimulating debate on linkages between poverty alleviation and environmental protection. In particular, it turns attention towards the role of environmental services in agricultural landscapes as they provide a living for many poor in developing countries.

Multicultural Jurisprudence: Comparative Perspectives on the Cultural Defense (Onati International Series in Law and Society)

Multicultural Jurisprudence: Comparative Perspectives on the Cultural Defense (Onati International Series in Law and Society)
Marie-Claire Foblets,Alison Dundes Renteln | 2009-01-16 00:00:00 | Hart Publishing | 394 | Criminal Law
As individuals travel across borders, societies have become more and more pluralistic. The result of increased migration is the interaction among cultural communities and inevitably clashes between state law and customary law. These cultural conflicts have given rise to a new multicultural jurisprudence. In this volume scholars grapple with the immense challenges judges are currently experiencing everywhere. To what extent can and should courts accommodate litigants' requests by taking their cultural backgrounds into account? This collection brings together powerful examples of the cultural defense in many countries in Western Europe, North America, and elsewhere. It shows the ubiquity of this defense, contrary to the mistaken impression that it has been invoked principally in the United States. This book makes the case for undertaking studies of the use of the cultural defense in jurisdictions all over the world where this has not been previously documented. Many of the chapters concentrate on criminal cases including homicide in the context of honour crimes, provocation based on 'loss of face' or witchcraft killings. Some deal with other areas of law such as asylum jurisprudence, family law and housing policy. They show in concrete cases how cultural claims have arisen and how legal systems wrestle with these arguments. It is clear that judges have had considerable difficulty handling many of the cultural claims. The authors demonstrate persuasively the need to reconsider the proper use of cultural evidence in legal proceedings. Those interested in the ways in which expertise influences the disposition of cases will find this book compelling.

MIS Techniques in Orthopedics

MIS Techniques in Orthopedics
Giles R. Scuderi, Alfred J. Tria, Richard A. Berger | 2005-01-01 00:00:00 | | 433 | Medicine
The technique-based text is geared for the orthopedic surgeon who is familiar with the features of MIS and now wants to master the approach. The book covers the shoulder and elbow, the hip, unicondylar knee arthroplasty, and MIS total knee arthroplasty, which are the four main focus areas for MIS joint replacement surgery. Chapters written by leading authorities in the field include usage techniques for the latest instrumentation, and they guide surgeons step-by-step through procedures. In addition, a section is devoted to computer-guided total hip and knee arthroplasty. More than 300 detailed line drawings and photographs supplement the discussion by clearly illustrating how the techniques are performed.

This practical resource is a great tool for orthopedic surgeons, residents, and fellows who want to confidently learn and apply cutting-edge MIS techniques. Although the text has value as a stand-alone reference, it also complements Drs. Scuderi and Tria’s MIS of the Hip and Knee: A Clinical Perspective.

One common misconception about this book might be "I don't have a family business; therefore this book may not be for me." Well after reading this book, I can tell you that that statement is false. I am not from a family business, although I have definitely recommended this text to those families in all stages of business and transition. This book will give you a new outlook on a way you can transform your business as well as your life. If you follow all the exercises and look into topics discussed in the book, such as the life plan and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, your professional life will improve greatly. The life plan that Dr. Greg McCann has you do in a latter chapter of the book is the best exercise I have ever done in my life.

As a young man still trying to figure things out, I have found this book to be a guideline for me. This guideline has really helped me bring my parents back into my life, not only by me being able to be myself but also in discussing my plan with them. The book also showed me ways and habits of communication within my close network of friends and family which has helped me in countless situations. The amount of self-assurance that I received after reading this was priceless and really put things into prospective for me.

Lastly I would like to comment on the way the book is written. Not only was it a compelling read, it challenged me to look back at myself and see the big picture. While I was reading it, I really felt like I had a life coach talking to me. The book's layout is well structured too; with key definitions and charts laid out to help you truly understand the material. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to get serious about their life - for parents and students of all ages.

I'm approaching my one-year anniversary working for a medium-sized, but growing, family business. The majority of my career - nearly 20 years, however, has been spent moving up the corporate ladder. Greg's book was an invaluable guide to exploiting the opportunities, and avoiding the pitfalls, of such a business. Thanks to reading it, I hit the ground running, with eyes wide open!

As a professional with one of the world's top firms serving the next generation of families who own businesses and families of wealth,I found this book to be the best resource I have found to assist young people in their career quest. The author articulates the issues I hear about from my clients every day in his description of the "eight challenges". These challenges face anyone considering working with their family business. This structure provides a systematic, step-by-step process that has never before been available. The best part is that it goes beyond just talking about it in terms of a career decision and goes deeper helping individuals assess their passions and thinking in terms of what is best for them, their family and the business.

It is about self development and awareness for individuals and includes tools that can help a family get along better and have a more successful business. At its core it helps young people take ownership for their lives, a core issue at this life stage, especially when your family owns a business and/or has great wealth.

The book is written in a voice that makes it accessible for an audience of teenagers but in my opinion it is extremely useful for all ages including parents and advisors working with family owned businesses. It even comes with a Parents Guide to coach the senior generation how to best be a productive part of their child's use of this book.

In my experience I have never read a book that has given me so much insight into how to advise members of the next generation and I would recommend this book to anyone considering working with their family, parents who own a family business and advisors who work with families in business.

Fantastic and fun read!

Most family businesses don't survive the next generation of family members. "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks: Finding Career Success Inside Or Outside The Family Business" by Greg McCann (Founder of the Family Business Center, Stetson University and the family business consulting firm of McCann & Associates ) offers a comprehensive and superbly organized guide to having a career within or without the family business. Professor McCann teaches the reader how to create and evaluate an education and career plan where decisions are made for the right reason instead of by default; develop 'marketability' for themselves instead of merely feeling entitled to a position through nepotism; build a career portfolio, obtain work experience outside their family business, and recruit objective mentors for themselves. Of special note is what Professor McCann has to say about preserving relationships while dealing with family expectations with respect to entering the family business; the importance of attitude and communication styles; and avoiding the downside of undeserved pay and benefits arising from participation in a family business. Using examples of three young people with family businesses, "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks" deals with 'the amateur', 'the semipro', and 'the professional'. If you have a family business that you'd like to see your children take on, of if you are the child of a parent with a family business expecting you to take over, you need to give Professor McCann's "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks" a close and careful reading. This is a unique and seminal work that should be a part of every college and community library's Jobs & Careers reference collection.
