For hundreds of years, ancient Egypt was ruled by kings and queens called pharaohs. Many of Egypt’s pharaohs became famous in history. King Djoser (about 2650–2575 B.C.) built the first pyramids—the enormous stone tombs that rise out of Egypt’s desert sands. Queen Hatshepsut (1479–1458 B.C.) was the first woman pharaoh. She sent expeditions to other countries to open up trade routes. Ramses II (1271–1213 B.C.) was a great military general. Other pharaohs were great thinkers, builders, and warriors.
