Great Britain: A Reference Guide from the Renaissance to the Present

Great Britain: A Reference Guide from the Renaissance to the Present
Richard S. Tompson | 2003-01-01 00:00:00 | Facts on File | 544 | History
This volume is part of Facts On File's European Nations series, which is aimed predominantly at a high-school and college-student audience and provides concise country-based surveys of European history. The reference guides contain a broad array of political, cultural, social, and other content, and their arrangement facilitates browsing for the casual reader.

Eight chapters provide narrative on British history from pre-1399 to the twenty-first century. The 329-page historical dictionary covers a surprising breadth of content, with entries for British politicians, artists, writers, legal terms, governmental acts, architecture, geography, and more. Additionally, the dictionary includes references to Great Britain's involvement in Africa, India, and Ireland. A chronology is followed by four appendixes: "Maps," "Genealogies," "English Sovereigns from 899," and "United Kingdom Prime Ministers from 1721." The bibliography is substantial. Text is complemented by black-and-white photographs and illustrations.

Although not inexpensive for a one-volume reference book, this title is a worthy addition to most university and public library collections because it contains such expansive material in compact form. RBB
