Grabbing Lightning: Building a Capability for Breakthrough Innovation
G. Colarelli O'Connor | 2008-02-25 00:00:00 | Jossey-Bass | 368 | Management
Established companies are clamoring for breakthrough innovation, but are often hamstrung by the highly reliable, repeatable processes of their management systems. Based on years of research, Grabbing Lightning shows how twelve companies have tried to develop a capability for sustainable breakthrough innovation and outlines best practices for your organization.
The authors show how the management system for innovation is different from the traditional one in that it allows?and even encourages?mistakes and failures in order to promote learning. Grabbing Lightning outlines the three building blocks of breakthrough innovation (BI) and shows what it takes to become an organization that values the BI management system.

Ordered a book, second handed but was in great shape. The book was shipped the very next day and was received in approximately 2 weeks (in Europe). Recommended seller!

Building on the insightful foundation of Radical Innovation, the authors go from "innovating successfully" to "innovating sustainably, reliably, predictably". Far from a dry, academic set of theories and observations, Grabbing Lightning is very actionable in your organization. A key task is enlisting support at several levels, this book is approachable and understandable, providing a common language to foster alignment. It's hard to imagine that not too many years ago, most companies didn't have a dedicated marketing function. I believe not too many years from now, intentional innovation will be as intrinsic to the enterprise as many functions we now take for granted. Grabbing Lightning can help you get ther sooner.

Innovation has been a buzzword in business circles for years, but few have taken the steps Gina O'Connor and her colleagues have to understand the process and share with the reader how successful companies embed BREAKTHROUGH INNOVATION into their daily activities. This book is a must read for those who want to use Innovation for competitive advantage.
