Japan and East Asia in Transition: Trade Policy, Crisis and Evolution and Regionalism
Hidetaka Yoshimatsu | 2003-11-15 00:00:00 | Palgrave Macmillan | 192 | Economics
This book examines how Japan has changed its economic relationship with East Asia since the mid 1990's by looking at its commitments to import relief, regional financial and industrial transformations, and regionalism. While the Japanese government has taken proactive initiatives to sustain the sound development of the regional economies, it has become more strategic in preserving its interests in the rapid industrial transformation. The book includes valuable information about Japan's trade remedy measures, Sino-Japan relations, and regional integration in East Asia.

Lesbian and Gay Studies

Lesbian and Gay Studies
Jan Willem Duyvendak,Theo Sandfort,Judith Schuyf,Jeffrey Weeks | 2000-09-05 00:00:00 | Sage Publications Ltd | 288 | Coming Out
This timely and thoughtful book seeks to demonstrate the coherence of lesbian and gay studies. It introduces the reader to the principal inter-disciplinary approaches in the field and critically assesses their strengths and weaknesses whilst asking what is lesbian and gay studies? When did it emerge? And what are its achievements and research agenda? The Connections between the academic study of the subject and the lesbian and gay movement are also examined.

Coming out has been one of the most significant social and cultural changes of the postwar period. The gay and lesbian movement has emerged as a major political and cultural force. It poses a series of far reaching questions about the organization of identity, the operation of power and the limits of tolerance. Lesbian and gay studies has emerged as a vital and enriching field. It offers challenges to more traditional disciplines and requires new forms of thought about the connections between academic work and personal politics. This book will generate much interest in academic departments of lesbian and gay studies, gender, sociology, cultural studies and political science.

Principles of Language Learning and Teaching, Fourth Edition

Principles of Language Learning and Teaching, Fourth Edition
H. Douglas Brown | 2000-03-06 00:00:00 | Pearson ESL | 352 | English as a Foreign Language
How do people learn a second language? For almost two decades, Principles of Language Learning and Teaching has been recognized as an exceptional guide to the theoretical foundations of language teaching. This new fourth edition offers an overview of the study of Second Language Acquisition, while acting as a reference for the growing storehouse of research, subfields, and specialization of SLA.
Reviews
I've read this book, and I've taught students French at the University of Santa Barbara, I've taught students English at the University of Bordeaux in France, and I've been teaching students in Korea for four years.

I've also studied 5 languages, and I try to use what I think works for me for my students.

The basic information is fine, but I'm deeply skeptical about whether this guy actually has actually learned and become proficient in foreign languages.

I don't think you can teach a foreign language unless you have learned a foreign language, and at least have tried to learn the foreign language of the students you are teaching.

Unless you're studying Korean, you cannot teach Korean students English properly, because you'll have no idea why they make the mistakes they chronically do.

And, let's be honest: American foreign language teaching has failed epically. Americans don't learn foreign languages. Why should we trust them? Of course ESL is different but it doesn't apply to foreign countries b/c there's enormous motivation for immigrants to learn English.

Brown's book is an excellent, comprehensive resource for TESOL students. It is professionally written and useful for language teachers.
Reviews
Given the heavy-duty subject matter, Brown's "Principles of Language Learning and Teaching" is probably about as good as it gets. It's definitely not a book of general interest, but rather a compendium of the various theories that have influenced and shaped the teaching of second languages in the 20th century. It's slow going, but after a one semester course during which I plowed through and digested the material, I've gained a general understanding of the theory behind the practice. Babyboomers like me who had an unhappy second language experience in school will smile while reading Brown's explanations of the theories of the 50's, 60's and 70's, and why so many of us became discouraged. As a teacher of ESL now, I can only say things have improved a lot. In this new edition, Brown has included a section in the last chapter on current hot topics in the field. But again, this is for professionals or students, not general readers.
Reviews
H Douglas Brown, no stranger to the TESOL community, offers scholarly information about issues in teaching English as Second Language. Scholarly language interspersed with plain English from a real person.

Trauma, Attachment, and Family Permanence: Fear Can Stop You Loving

Trauma, Attachment, and Family Permanence: Fear Can Stop You Loving
Caroline Archer,Alan Burnell,Daniel A. Hughes | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Jessica Kingsley Publishers | 336 | Mental Health
Exploring the complex issues of trauma, attachment and family placement, the contributors to this book provide a variety of complementary perspectives on practice in this area. Focusing on how to integrate attachment theory and developmental psychology in practice with adopted or fostered children, they emphasize the need for understanding of early trauma and its effect on child development.

Examining multiple aspects of work with children who are unable to live with their birth families, the book includes contributions on:

* new approaches to matching children with families

* effective management of contact with birth families

* the neurobiological effects of trauma on children

* problems and developmental challenges in school

* the use of creative arts therapies with children and families.

The book adopts an inclusive approach, valuing the parent as a central member of the therapeutic team. Contributions from user families illustrate the challenges of bringing up fostered or adopted children and show how the attachment-based approach has worked for them.

Bringing together a rich and innovative selection of ideas for adoption and fostering practice, this book will be a valuable resource for all involved with family support in this area

Rezepte aus dem Auenland

Rezepte aus dem Auenland
Beregil von Gondor | 2002-01-01 00:00:00 | Heel | 129 | Cooking
Seit vielen Jahrzehnten entfuhrt J.R.R.
