Mastering the Art of French Cooking Vol. 2

Mastering the Art of French Cooking Vol. 2
Julia Child, Simone Beck | 1964-01-01 00:00:00 | Knopf | 735 | Other Engineering
Here is the sequel to the great cooking classic. Each of the new recipes is worked out step-by-step, with the clarity and precision that are the essence of the first volume. 5 times as many drawings as in Vol. I make the clear instructions even more so.

Average Customer Review: based on 4 reviews.

Julia Child's 1961 Mastering the Art of French Cooking, followed by her television series The French Chef, brought continental cuisine to suburban American kitchens, and home cooking has never been quite the same. (Who hasn't, at least once, made their chickens dance before roasting them?) The book, coauthored with French colleagues Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, explains both the whys and the hows of French cuisine, giving explicit instruction in everything from the perfect bA©chamel sauce to airy and crispy profiteroles. That the book has remained in print is a testament to its clarity and usefulness. Today's health-conscious home cooks can simply go a bit easier on the butter and still benefit from Child's Cordon Bleu experience.

A Political Economy of Health Care in Senegal (African Social Studies Series)

A Political Economy of Health Care in Senegal (African Social Studies Series)
Maghan Keita | 2006-12-01 00:00:00 | Brill | 212 | Economics
This work is a political economic history that analyzes approximately 350 years of rivalry between traditional, Islamic, and European systems of health in the Senegambian region of West Africa.

The work is divided into three parts. Part I focuses on the theoretical parameters of a political economy of health care. Part II addresses the historical nature of health care rivalries in the Senegambian region from the mid-seventeenth century through independence. And Part III looks at contemporary contention concerning health care delivery and the ways in which 'average' people craft alternative health care mechanisms while bringing pressure to bear on national and international bodies as well. A Political Economy of Health Care in Senegal should prove useful as a critical indicator of the ways in which historical agency is manifested historically and in contemporary health policy; policy that is often initiated outside of the "official" sector.

Forecasting Financial Markets: The Psychology of Successful Investing, Sixth Edition

Forecasting Financial Markets: The Psychology of Successful Investing, Sixth Edition
Tony Plummer | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Kogan Page | 425 | Finances and Money
Forecasting Financial Markets provides a compelling insight into the psychology of trading behavior and shows how "following the herd" can have disastrous results. It demonstrates how one's ability to make money in the world's financial markets depends critically on an ability to make decisions independently of the crowd.

Tony Plummer details the three dimensions essential to achieve successful trading, including an ability to understand the forces at work in logical terms, recognize (and neutralize) any emotional responses to market fluctuations, and design an investment process or trading system that generates objective "buy" or "sell" signals.

Taking the author's latest research into account, this book provides an in-depth assessment of the phenomenon of cycles, patterns of economic and financial activity, and how to use cycles as a forecasting tool. It includes Plummer's forecasts for when the global economy will emerge from its current downturn.

Is Democracy Exportable?

Is Democracy Exportable?
Zoltan Barany,Robert G. Moser | 2009-07-06 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 316 | Democracy
Can democratic states transplant the seeds of democracy into developing countries? What have political thinkers going back to the Greek city-states thought about their capacity to promote democracy? How can democracy be established in divided societies? In this timely volume a distinguished group of political scientists seeks answers to these and other fundamental questions behind the concept known as "democracy promotion." Following an illuminating concise discussion of what political philosophers from Plato to Montesquieu thought about the issue, the authors explore the structural preconditions (culture, divided societies, civil society) as well as the institutions and processes of democracy building (constitutions, elections, security sector reform, conflict, and trade). Along the way they share insights about what policies have worked, which ones need to be improved or discarded, and, more generally, what advanced democracies can do to further the cause of democratization in a globalizing world. In other words, they seek answers to the question, Is democracy exportable?
