It is the essential handbook for all practising GPs, GPs in training, medical students and allied health professions.
Reviews
As Prof Kurt (eminent Brazilian physician) once said: one needs a good book to make sure he isn't missing anything fundamental.

well, this is just such book. In my family practice, whenever i see a patient with something a bit different from the daily business, I turn to this very practicle and tested book.
Reviews
Good all round view of family practice. The initial section is very geared up to the UK but most of the book covers clinical topics relevant anywhere in the world.

Statistics in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))

Statistics in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))
Sarah Boslaugh,Paul Andrew Watters | 2008-07-25 00:00:00 | O'Reilly Media | 480 | Research

Need to learn statistics as part of your job, or want some help passing a statistics course? Statistics in a Nutshell is a clear and concise introduction and reference that's perfect for anyone with no previous background in the subject. This book gives you a solid understanding of statistics without being too simple, yet without the numbing complexity of most college texts.

You get a firm grasp of the fundamentals and a hands-on understanding of how to apply them before moving on to the more advanced material that follows. Each chapter presents you with easy-to-follow descriptions illustrated by graphics, formulas, and plenty of solved examples. Before you know it, you'll learn to apply statistical reasoning and statistical techniques, from basic concepts of probability and hypothesis testing to multivariate analysis.

Organized into four distinct sections, Statistics in a Nutshell offers you:

    Introductory material:
  • Different ways to think about statistics
  • Basic concepts of measurement and probability theory

  • Data management for statistical analysis
  • Research design and experimental design
  • How to critique statistics presented by others

  • Basic inferential statistics:
  • Basic concepts of inferential statistics
  • The concept of correlation, when it is and is not an appropriate measure of association
  • Dichotomous and categorical data
  • The distinction between parametric and nonparametric statistics

  • Advanced inferential techniques:
  • The General Linear Model
  • Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and MANOVA
  • Multiple linear regression

  • Specialized techniques:
  • Business and quality improvement statistics
  • Medical and public health statistics
  • Educational and psychological statistics

Unlike many introductory books on the subject, Statistics in a Nutshell doesn't omit important material in an effort to dumb it down. And this book is far more practical than most college texts, which tend to over-emphasize calculation without teaching you when and how to apply different statistical tests.

With Statistics in a Nutshell, you learn how to perform most common statistical analyses, and understand statistical techniques presented in research articles. If you need to know how to use a wide range of statistical techniques without getting in over your head, this is the book you want.

Reviews
This book has so many mistakes that it becomes difficult to interpret what the authors meant. Incorrect conclusions are drawn from the examples given. I would be ashamed to put my name on this work, especially as a proofreader or editor. Totally unacceptable for a mathematical text. I wouldn't trust the results of the author's statistical work, even though she enjoys belittling other people's work throughout.
Reviews
I have read many popular statistics books and textbooks. This is quite possibly the best-written book of it's type, a concise introduction/review, and introductory (first-year stats) reference. I'm writing this because I don't think the existing reviews generally give this book enough credit. What's so good about it?

(1) The writing: very clear and concise. But not so concise so as to be difficult or "mysterious." When reading the book, there there several times when I read something, didn't quite understand the point, was certain that the author had too quickly skimmed over the topic, only to turn the page and see a clear two or three paragraph explanation of the point I was trying to understand. The level at which the material is covered is just perfect for this sort of use: not too short so as to leave something out; not too long so as to make topics too complicated. The questions at the end of chapters are "just right" too. They are well chosen, clear, not superficial, but not too difficult.

(2) The organization of topics is very well done. The flow is very natural, and lends itself to effective and efficient coverage of the material.

This may not be the best book to learn statistics from scratch (perhaps a bit too concise, but actually still not too bad), and certainly not a good choice if you are looking for coverage or a reference for advanced topics. But if you are looking for a review, and perhaps an easy to read basic statistics reference, it can't be beat. Quite possibly the best book for this purpose available.

Hope this helps...
Reviews
I recently received this book and immediately went to the O'Reilly errata [...]There was an extensive list, but after going through it I found that about 80% of the errors noted on it had already been corrected despite the fact that the book I received is still marked "First Edition".

I have yet to read the book, so please take my 4 star rating with a grain of salt, but I had to include that to publish this review. That being said, the fear of excessive typos and errors should no longer deter you from considering this book.
Reviews
For a very long time I had been looking for a basic book--a sort of map if you will--to the myriad number of statistical tests available for conducting research. After speaking to multiple people and reviewing many books, I finally stumbled into two gems. The first one is Learning to use statistical tests in psychology by Judith Greene and Manuela D'Oliveira (209 pp.) Learning to Use Statistical Tests in Psychology. I loved the second edition but bought the third edition, which follows a similar line. In the third edition, however, the most important feature of the book, a set of decision charts fell off. The third edition only includes one chart and so you better make sure it is included before you buy, or write to Open University Press and they will send you a PDF you can print and paste in the back cover. The book is interesting and reads like a page turning novel. The focus is on helping you decide which of the many statistical tests should be selected when conducting a research study. I was looking for a book that spoke about Likert-type questions and the analysis required (answer = Chi-square) and was surprised that Likert scales are not mentioned. The advantage of the Greene-D'Oliveira book is that it has the decision chart and is translated into Spanish (which is important for me). A week later I found the second book, Statistics in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference by Sarah Boslaugh and Paul Andrew Watters (O'Reilly, 452 pp.) that had everything I was looking for and more. The book is also very well written and entertaining. It has a better index and includes a discussion of Likert scales and the Chi-square. Besides being more thorough, Boslaugh-Watters provide a better discussion of statistical packages. If I could only choose one of the two books, I would purchase Boslaugh-Watters, but I am thrilled to have found both of these superb reference books.
Reviews
I purchased this book to brush up on some of the more advanced topics in statistics. As I remembered my undergrad stats experience to be a lot of proofs, I was drawn in by the "solid understanding without the numbing complexity of most textbooks" on the back cover.

There are just too many errors to be useful. I found myself going back more and more to my old statistics textbook from college. The examples are clearer and there are better problems to work through. And guess what? You can skip over the "numbing complexity" and still get more from a textbook than you will from "Statistics in a Nutshell."

Furthermore, I don't trust this title as a reference, as I typically have to validate what I'm researching with another textbook. It's quicker and easier to go to a source you know is correct from the start.

O'Reilly really needs to step up for this sloppy book: correct the mistakes and offer those of us with the first versions a free trade-in to the corrected version.

Science Has No Sex: The Life of Marie Zakrzewska, M.D. (Studies in Social Medicine)

Science Has No Sex: The Life of Marie Zakrzewska, M.D. (Studies in Social Medicine)
Arleen Marcia Tuchman | 2006-05-29 00:00:00 | The University of North Carolina Press | 352 | Medical
German-born Marie Zakrzewska (1829-1902) was one of the most prominent female physicians of nineteenth-century America. Best known for creating a modern hospital and medical education program for women, Zakrzewska battled against the gendering of science and the restrictive definitions of her sex. In Science Has No Sex, Arleen Tuchman examines the life and work of a woman who continues to challenge historians of gender to this day.

At a time when most women physicians laid claim to "female" qualities of care and nurturance to justify their professional choice, Zakrzewska insisted that all physicians, regardless of gender, should depend upon the rational faculties developed through training in the natural sciences. She viewed science as a democratizing tool-anyone could master science, she asserted, and therefore the doors to the elite profession of medicine should be opened to all.

Shedding light on the changes that radically transformed medicine in the late nineteenth century, Tuchman's analysis also demonstrates how Zakrzewska's activism is important to the ongoing debate over the relationship between science and sex.

The Dynamics of Persuasion: Communication and Attitudes in the 21st Century (Routledge Communication Series)

The Dynamics of Persuasion: Communication and Attitudes in the 21st Century (Routledge Communication Series)
Richard M. Perloff | 2002-12-01 00:00:00 | Routledge | 424 | Mental Health
This completely revised second edition of the best-selling text presents an up-to-date, comprehensive introduction to persuasive communication and attitude change. Employing the same organizational strategy he used in the first edition but offering more applications and fresh examples, Richard Perloff systematically explores the impact of persuasive communications on attitudes toward a host of topics spanning health, politics, and racial prejudice.

This text will:
*enhance students' understanding of persuasion theories and research;
*introduce readers to the social science perspective on persuasion;
*expose students to major issues discussed in the field of persuasion research;
*help students appreciate complexities and subtleties in the dynamics of everyday persuasion; and
*raise consciousness about the ethics of contemporary persuasion.

Part I introduces students to the ubiquity of persuasion, how it is defined and differentiated from related terms, and the meaning of core concepts like attitude, belief, and value. Perloff combines a discussion of major concepts, such as balance theory, accessibility, and the theory of reasoned action with application of these concepts to numerous situations in everyday life, including the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, body art, religion, abortion, and AIDS prevention.

Part II of the book explores communication and attitude change. Contemporary theories, such as the Elaboration Likelihood Model, the Extended Parallel Process Model, and Cognitive Dissonance Theory are discussed in detail. Students and professors will find an up-to-date discussion of research generated by these theories, coupled with criticisms of theoretical perspectives.

Part III of the book examines advertising and communication campaigns. After introducing students to advertising--using well-known advertising slogans and motifs--Perloff debunks subliminal advertising and describes major theories of advertising effects.

Written for the upper-undergraduate level, The Dynamics of Persuasion is appropriate for courses in the social sciences, notably communication, speech, journalism, psychology, marketing, and sociology.

Reviews
I have used this book and its previous edition in a graduate-level course in strategic communications. It has been a perennial favorite with my students and I have heard from several who I advise for their theses projects that they refer back to it to refresh their memories on relevant theories of persuasion. I have yet to see a text that covers such a range of theories and that presents them (and their critiques) in such a comprehensive way. An appropriate text for upper-level undergrad or grad courses.
Reviews
This book is easy to read and understand. The concepts are backed up with studies and real-world examples, not too much speculation and theorizing. There is so much thought-provoking material, it really stands out for a textbook. In fact, this is one of the best textbooks I have ever seen.

Want to persuade people in everyday life? This isn't a bad place to start learning about it. You'll get an overview of dozens and dozens of ways to become more persuasive, why they work, and examples of how to use them.
Reviews
I teach a course in social influence at a local university, and this is the textbook that I like to use. Some of my students think it is overly dense, but a textbook isn't supposed to read like a novel. It has a great range of information, and is written from a communications, rather than a psychological, perspective. I find it highly readable and accurate, and love the section on propaganda. I hope a second edition will be available soon.
Reviews
I have read this book several times each time found it interesting and challenging. Written in an extravagant manner the book touches upon the main techniques of Persuasion. The book helped me a lot while writing me thesis on Persuasion in Advertising. Hope you'll like it too. It a visa for new territories, vague and yet real. Lilly George Bulgaria

Reviews
This book was useful for finding hotels, but I was extremely frustrated with its maps. Perhaps I shouldn't have relied on them to find my way around Verona on a scorchingly hot day, but then again, I should have been advised to buy a detailed map once I hit the city. Too few streets were marked and the churches were not well identified. I was so angry that I swore never to buy a Frommer's guide again.
Reviews

Ordered and downloaded book through Amazon Kindle to my Ipad, book came over great but the cover is

Frommer's Arizona 2010 not Frommer's Northern Italy. Called Amazon support and reported problem weeks ago.

NEVER HEARD BACK FROM THEM, WON'T BE ORDERING ANY MORE BOOKS!
Reviews
We found this book very useful in our recent travels especially for sights and dining. Did not agree with some of the hotel reviews so consider comparing to another guide book.
Reviews
The book is very informative. A friend and I are going to Milan next March and we are doing research using the book.
Reviews
I've always liked Frommer's, mainly because the books are well-organized and provide a great overview and starting point. The attractions are clearly explained, with hours, admission fees, restrictions, & considerations. The hotel suggestions are generally good, though usually a little on the more expensive end, and in lieu of internet I find them generally reliable.

It can be a little dry and a little mainstream, but their books are usually updated with good regularity & is good for planning your sightseeing and transportation. More detailed information on ferries & hydrofoils (not just from Frommers but guide books in general) would be nice!

Sams Teach Yourself Movable Type in 24 Hours

Sams Teach Yourself Movable Type in 24 Hours
Molly E. Holzschlag,Porter Glendinning | 2004-05-28 00:00:00 | Sams | 576 | Databases

Movable Type, a low-cost, distributed publishing software solution is helping thousands of Web site developers organize and automate the Web content management process.

In 24 well-paced chapters, the authors of Sams Teach Yourself Movable Type in 24 Hours show readers how to install, personalize, and configure Movable Type into an indispensable content management tool.

Features hands-on tutorials for finding Web hosting services, adjusting publishing preferences, customizing page templates, setting up multiple author accounts and extending the program with plug-ins and custom features, the authors show readers how to use everything from the most basic fundamentals of Movable Type to its most powerful features.

Reviews
I'm certain that, like all the books in this series, this was a fine book in its time. But its time is past. There is very little at all in this book that will help any user of the newer version of Moveable Type .
Reviews
If you're wanting to learn Movable Type, this book won't help. All this book tells you is how many other books you need to buy (CSS and HTML).

See, Movable Type is a combination of web-standards HTML and CSS combined with its own proprietary tab system. So, really, it brings THREE different programming languages together (which is what makes MT so powerful). Howver, this book doesn't cover any of them.

What this book does give is a simplistic look at the different areas of MT. However, it doesn't give you enough tools to actually USE MT. For example, one would think the layout of the site would, you know, warrant a significant portion of the book. In actuality, the layout is only covered in chapters 10 and 11 and only the basics: changing colors and adding an image to the banner. That's it.

Sure, there are other issues (such as installation, migration, syndication and publishing) covered in the book but with such a minor look at the fundamentals, this book is near useless.

To put it simply: YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PROGRAM MOVABLE TYPE.

Look at Movable Type's manual, web forums, www.elise.com/mt, movalog.org and other CSS and HTML tutorials (learning CSS and HTML is CRITICAL!) for the real guide to Movable Type.
Reviews
Moveable Type (MT) is a blogging tool that I've been using on my site for several years. This is not a review of which software is the best, but on the book's usefulness in getting a person up to speed on MT. On that note, the authors do a first-rate job of helping the reader learn how to use MT.

As a person who is experienced in using MT, it provides me with a few tips and tricks I hadn't considered. Since I'm self-taught, I missed a few steps. Besides, there are many things you can do with MT especially when adding plug-ins.

For the person who has never touched a blog or MT in particular, the authors start at the beginning and keep things simple. Realistically, how do you write a book that meets the needs of the experienced while introducing the new users to the software? Experienced users will probably skip the first few chapters where it covers installation and setting up a blog. But the rest covering templates, plug-ins, managing archives, and adding features will more than provide enough to keep anyone busy.

Not only do the authors show how to use MT, but also they offer information on how to write and promote content. The book focuses on v2.x of MT. As I understand it, MT v3.0 doesn't have major changes and much (if not all) of the book is still valuable. You could wait around for a v3.x book, but by the time it comes out the software will have upgraded. Blogging tools upgrade very frequently and I use seldom use the word "very."

The MT online doc is one of the better blogging software documentation I've seen. The book offers accompanying pictures and additional information not found in the help doc. If you like getting all of your information in one place accompanied with visual aids, this is sure to please.

The World Trade Organization Knowledge Agreements (Cambridge Studies in Law and Society)

The World Trade Organization Knowledge Agreements (Cambridge Studies in Law and Society)
Christopher Arup | 2008-06-09 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 546 | Economics
The WTO intellectual property and services agreements (TRIPs and GATS) form the global legal framework in which governments now regulate trade in knowledge. This second edition analyses the provisions of the agreements and examines closely the thirteen years of implementation and revision. Gathering together the interpretations placed on the agreements by the WTO dispute settlement bodies, it reports on the initiatives taken by the members both to liberalise trade in knowledge and to shape international business regulation. Drawing on this, Christopher Arup assesses the future of the WTO as a global law-making institution. Three expanded case studies (legal services, genetic codes/essential medicines, and on-line media) illustrate the impact of the agreements and highlight the challenges faced by the WTO in reconciling free trade with social regulation.

Haynes, Weber, Zenith Stromberg and SU Carburetor Manual (Haynes Manuals)

Haynes, Weber, Zenith Stromberg and SU Carburetor Manual (Haynes Manuals)
John Haynes | 1996-02-19 00:00:00 | Haynes Manuals, Inc. | 350 | Automotive
This series of comprehensive manuals gives the home mechanic an in-depth look at specific areas of auto repair.

Reviews
If you have Zenith-Strombergs and need info this book is ONLY good up to 1974, there are no carb or metering needle part numbers, or any reference numbers after 1974, it's not in this book, even though it was printed in 1995.
Reviews
This manual was OK. It had a lot of information, but it did not have enough specifics on each individual carburetor in the title.
Reviews
This book has some pretty good photos of the carbs and tells how to take them apart and put them back together but doesn't give a clue about how to tune them or list different size jets that are available or anything useful. There's not much information about how they work to help figure it out either. It's so hard to find any concrete information in this book that you'd think it was written by Nostradamus. I have a lot of experience tuning motorcycle carbs that helped me with my Weber but after I got the pilot jet and the main jet tuned as well as possible the mid-range was still off, it was too rich at slower speeds and too lean at faster speeds, and I couldn't find a way to adjust that.

In a book called The Dellorto Superperformance Tech Book there is a section that talks about adjusting the midrange mixture by drilling holes in the emulsion tube, more holes at the top enriches the mixture at full throttle and less holes at the bottom makes slow speeds leaner. That got me to thinking about adjusting the emulsion tube in my Weber.

After reading through the book several times I highlighted everything that I could find about the emulsion tube and put it all together and it doesn't really say this but by reading between the lines I figured out that the diameter of the upper half determines the mixture at slow speeds and the lower half determines the mixture at faster speeds. Weber only supplies 2 emulsion tubes, the F50 and F66, that are fat at the bottom and thin at the top which is just the opposite of what is needed. I turned down the bottom of the tube in a lathe and built up the upper part by coating it with solder but you'd never figure out how to do that just by reading this book.

That got it working pretty well and it runs much better than the stock carb on my Toyota truck.
Reviews
Just about any Weber carb is in this book, plus Zenith Strombergs and SU carburetors ... with four or five pages dedicated to each. In other words, a mile wide and an inch deep. But where else can you find this much information between two covers? Just a shame it's published on newsprint paper...

The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom

The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom
Yochai Benkler | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | Yale University Press | 528 | Internet
With the radical changes in information production that the Internet has introduced, we stand at an important moment of transition, says Yochai Benkler in this thought-provoking book. The phenomenon he describes as social production is reshaping markets, while at the same time offering new opportunities to enhance individual freedom, cultural diversity, political discourse, and justice. But these results are by no means inevitable: a systematic campaign to protect the entrenched industrial information economy of the last century threatens the promise of today’s emerging networked information environment.

In this comprehensive social theory of the Internet and the networked information economy, Benkler describes how patterns of information, knowledge, and cultural production are changing—and shows that the way information and knowledge are made available can either limit or enlarge the ways people can create and express themselves. He describes the range of legal and policy choices that confront us and maintains that there is much to be gained—or lost—by the decisions we make today.

In 1891, newspapers all over the world carried reports of the death of H. P. Blavatsky, the mysterious Russian woman who was the spiritual founder of the Theosophical Society. With the help of the equally mysterious Mahatmas who were her teachers, Blavatsky claimed to have brought the "ancient wisdom of the East" to the rescue of a materialistic West. In England, Blavatsky's earliest followers were mostly men, but a generation later the Theosophical Society was dominated by women, and theosophy had become a crucial part of feminist political culture.

Divine Feminine is the first full-length study of the relationship between alternative or esoteric spirituality and the feminist movement in England. Historian Joy Dixon examines the Theosophical Society's claims that women and the East were the repositories of spiritual forces which English men had forfeited in their scramble for material and imperial power. Theosophists produced arguments that became key tools in many feminist campaigns. Many women of the Theosophical Society became suffragists to promote the spiritualizing of politics, attempting to create a political role for women as a way to "sacralize the public sphere." Dixon also shows that theosophy provides much of the framework and the vocabulary for today's New Age movement. Many of the assumptions about class, race, and gender which marked the emergence of esoteric religions at the end of the nineteenth century continue to shape alternative spiritualities today.
Reviews
I heard about this book from a friend of mine while attending class in UBC. I'm very impressed with Dr. Dixon's arguments and opinions. I must say, I never thought a book on theosophy and feminism in England could be so intriguing. This book is a stunner, I highly recommend it. Hopefully I will be able to study under Dr. Dixon one day.

The Science and Engineering of Cutting: The Mechanics and Processes of Separating, Scratching and Puncturing Biomaterials, Metals and Non-metals

The Science and Engineering of Cutting: The Mechanics and Processes of Separating, Scratching and Puncturing Biomaterials, Metals and Non-metals
Tony Atkins | 2009-07-01 00:00:00 | Butterworth-Heinemann | 432 | Engineering
The materials mechanics of the controlled separation of a body into two or more parts - cutting -- using a blade or tool or other mechanical implement is a ubiquitous process in most engineering disciplines, be it mechanical, civil, medical, food or process based, and a surprising number of engineers are involved in cutting and the design of cutting tools. There are a wide range of books available on the cutting of metals, but no other text is devoted to the cutting of materials generally, the mechanics of which (toughness, fracture, deformation, plasticity, tearing, grating, chewing, etc) have wide ranging implications for engineers, medics, manufacturers, and process engineers, making this text of particular interest to a wide range of engineers and specialists.

* The only book to explain and unify the process and techniques of cutting in metals AND non-metals. The emphasis on biomaterials, plastics and non-metals will be of considerable interest to many, while the transfer of knowledge from non-metals fields offers important benefits to metalcutters.
* Comprehensive, written with this well-known author's lightness of touch, the book will attract the attention of many readers in this under-served subject
* The clarity of the text is further enhanced by detailed examples and case studies, from the grating of cheese on an industrial scale to the design of scalpels

An Introduction to Hankel Operators

An Introduction to Hankel Operators
Jonathan R. Partington | 1989-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 112 | Mathematics
Hankel operators are of wide application in mathematics (functional analysis, operator theory, approximation theory) and engineering (control theory, systems analysis) and this account of them is both elementary and rigorous. The book is based on graduate lectures given to an audience of mathematicians and control engineers, but to make it reasonably self-contained, the author has included several appendices on mathematical topics unlikely to be met by undergraduate engineers. The main prerequisites are basic complex analysis and some functional analysis, but the presentation is kept straightforward, avoiding unnecessary technicalities so that the fundamental results and their applications are evident. Some 45 exercises are included.

Mathematical Logic by Ian Chiswell

Mathematical Logic by Ian Chiswell
Ian Chiswell, Wilfrid Hodges | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press | 296 | Mathematics
Assuming no previous study in logic, this informal yet rigorous text covers the material of a standard undergraduate first course in mathematical logic, using natural deduction and leading up to the completeness theorem for first-order logic. At each stage of the text, the reader is given an intuition based on standard mathematical practice, which is subsequently developed with clean formal mathematics. Alongside the practical examples, readers learn what can and can't be calculated; for example the correctness of a derivation proving a given sequent can be tested mechanically, but there is no general mechanical test for the existence of a derivation proving the given sequent. The undecidability results are proved rigorously in an optional final chapter, assuming Matiyasevich's theorem characterising the computably enumerable relations. Rigorous proofs of the adequacy and completeness proofs of the relevant logics are provided, with careful attention to the languages involved. Optinal sections discuss the classification of mathematical structures by first-order theories; the required theory of cardinality is developed from scratch. Throughout the book there are notes on historical aspects of the material, and connections with linguistics and computer science, and the discussion of syntax and semantics is influenced by modern linguistic approaches. Two basic themes in recent cognitive science studies of actual human reasoning are also introduced. Including extensive exercises and selected solutions, this text is ideal for students in logic, mathematics, philosophy, and computer science.

Contemporary Feminist Historical Crime Fiction

Contemporary Feminist Historical Crime Fiction
Rosemary Erickson Johnsen | 2006-08-20 00:00:00 | Palgrave Macmillan | 192 | Historical
This book is the first scholarly study to focus exclusively on the growing subgenre of historical crime fiction. By examining the feminist interventions of contemporary women writers working in this subgenre, Johnsen advances the existing critical discussion of women's crime fiction. The writers studied here bring research expertise to bear on their chosen historical settings, creating a powerful but widely accessible statement about women in history. Seven history-mystery series provide the main focus; their settings range from twelfth century France to twentieth century Ireland, but all of them feature female investigators, well-constructed mystery plots, and intriguing historical detail.  This study demonstrates how these writers change readers' thinking about women in past and present times through their sophisticated textual practices.

Higher-Order Perl: Transforming Programs with Programs

Higher-Order Perl: Transforming Programs with Programs
| 2005-03-14 00:00:00 | | 600 | Perl

Most Perl programmers were originally trained as C and Unix programmers, so the Perl programs that they write bear a strong resemblance to C programs. However, Perl incorporates many features that have their roots in other languages such as Lisp. These advanced features are not well understood and are rarely used by most Perl programmers, but they are very powerful. They can automate tasks in everyday programming that are difficult to solve in any other way. One of the most powerful of these techniques is writing functions that manufacture or modify other functions. For example, instead of writing ten similar functions, a programmer can write a general pattern or framework that can then create the functions as needed according to the pattern. For several years Mark Jason Dominus has worked to apply functional programming techniques to Perl. Now Mark brings these flexible programming methods that he has successfully taught in numerous tutorials and training sessions to a wider audience.

* Introduces powerful programming methods?new to most Perl programmers?that were previously the domain of computer scientists
* Gradually builds up confidence by describing techniques of progressive sophistication
* Shows how to improve everyday programs and includes numerous engaging code examples to illustrate the methods

Haiku on a typewriter
Non-Lisp programmers, I think, fundamentally misunderstand the appeal of Lisp, and why it is superior to other programming languages. Lisp is not superior because it offers higher order functions or any of the other things, it is superior because it does not get in the way: Lisp meets problems, rather than forcing problems to meet it.

This book serves two purposes: on the one hand it helps Perl programmers to move the center of gravity of their solutions further away from Perl, and a bit closer to their problems (quite a bit closer, actually), and on the other it provides a good introduction to Perl for Lisp programmers, and for that it gets an effortless five stars.

I suspect that it is maybe more successful for the second purpose than the first: a relaxed read for someone who knows what a closure is, but for someone who does not know what a closure is, most likely not a relaxed read. Further, anyone who masters the contents may find that his newly refined coding style is somewhat caviary to the general, something that would be a problem in any IT/ORG that I have experienced.

Small quibbles: A Pratt Precedence parser might have fitted the discussion better than the recursive descent parser that is developed, and a deeper discussion of the ways that Perl nevertheless falls short of Lisp, instead of just a passing reference to Norvig's list, would actually have made the arguement stronger - for instance you cannot add a macro facility similar to that of Lisp to Perl, and you cannot add the general continuations available in Scheme (or the limited continuations that Graham, e.g., shows how to add to Common Lisp).

In short, Higher Order Perl makes a good case for the the aesthetics of haiku, but one should understand that (in spite of what my cousin, Leontia Flynn, thinks) it is haiku written with a typewriter, not with a caligrapher's brush.

P.S. One minor repeated irritation for me was the way the author, in spite of everything, insisted on emphasising how input functions should read input files one line at a time. This is a bizarre mindset holdover from the seventies, that is inconsistent with the general argument of the book: if you have a computer with hundreds of megabytes, or gigabytes, of core, then the efficient way to read a text file is not line by line, but in one go.

Solving Problems using Perl in a Functiona Programming approach
Functional Programming is a programming paradigm that is very useful and must be part of the tool-arsenal of any software engineer and developer along with the well known Object Oriented Programming, the procedural programming approaches and the less known Aspect Oriented programming.

HOP gives an easy access to Functional Programming for Perl developers. The book is written in a personal manner and is fun to read and sometimes even funny. It is definitely not a dry factoid book.

The examples in the book are useful not only as they demonstrate nicely the need and power of functional programming but also due to their practicality for seasoned programmers.

I felt the influence of books such as `Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs` by Abelson and the Sussmans` on HOP, and it was very nice and helpful to read MJD's recommendations for other good readings on the subject.

I got to reading HOP cover to cover, several times. I attempted to solve myself the problems raised in the book and found the process of doing that enjoying and rewarding. Reading on the commentary and approach suggested by MJD was in many ways enlightening. You can find some very amusing footnotes in the book that makes it yet more fun to read.

MJD gives a refreshing view on Perl programming, and shows that tasks that can be very complicated and hard, or computationally intense can be turned `inside out` and handled in a functional programming approach that simplifies understanding, simplifies the solution and also simplifies the implementation.

MJD presents a very useful introduction to functional programming using Perl using practical problems, and the nice thing is that even theoretical problems get practical usages when explained, which makes the reading fun, and worth the while for the non-theoretical people amongst the readers.

Though the book sometimes goes into detail or length too much for my taste, it does do a good job in giving the new view of the capabilities of a Perl programmer and the Perl programming language and how to use them.

I can testify that a lot of code that I got to see, write and maintain got a considerable `lift` and `upgrade` since me and other colleagues of mine read this book and used some of the wisdom that it offers.

There are many good and useful follow-ups to this book in the form of Perl modules on CPAN, articles and posts on the web and some book chapters. Look them up!

Also, if you feel that this functional programming approach is useful to you, you might want to probe further on this by reading Haskell, Lisp, Scheme (and other functional programming languages) literature. There are several `must read!` for these programming languages that will give you a very deep understanding and good skills in this programming paradigm. Also -- you will find, especially after reading HOP, that you now have the tools to easily and practically apply the functional programming principles that you learn in Functional Programming books to Perl and use it in your Perl code.

A few words on MDJ himself: I read a lot of what he wrote for Perl and used some of his modules and code that is available on the web. I had the pleasure of hosting him on the first YAPC in Israel and attend a 3 day course that he gave. He is a very smart person, a very nice person and an excellent teacher and a very good writer. If you don't already know MJD, this book is a very good way of getting access to some of the wisdom that this gut has to offer.

If you don't know which Perl books to buy and/or to read, know this: HOP is one of the books that you should read!

(It is funny that almost 3 years after I read this book for the first time and after reading some of the material before editing, as MJD offered in his private mailing list, I only now get to write a review on it. But still, it surely deserves a book review and a good mark too.)

User review
a must-read book for serious Perl programmers
I had originally planned to read Higher Order Perl and write my review immediately. When it became clear that I wasn't going to read HOP straight through, I figured I'd write a review when I was done. More and more, it looks like my reading of the last two chapters is being indefinitely delayed. I'm going to write what I think so far, while it's still more or less fresh in my mind.

Higher Order Perl was originally going to be given some fairly bland name, like `Handbook of Advancted Perl Techniques.` This would have been a spot-on (but uninteresting) title. HOP provides the reader with explanation and demonstration of techniques for problem-solving that are often overlooked. The examples are complex and detailed, but not byzantine, and they're built up slowly, piece by piece, so that each line of code's meaning and significance are made clear.

The title `Higher Order Perl` refers to the book's most central technique, functional programming. While many programmers understand how to abstract a specific solution into a more general one, Dominus helps the reader learn to push the envelope, abstracing generic solutions into extremely generalized solutions that can be applied to seemingly-unrelated problems. This is frequently done by the construction of functions that build functions that build functions -- and so on, functions all the way down. Instead of solving the problem in base, earthly Perl, the programmer produces Perl elements of a higher order which, operating in harmony, become all things to all people.Well, I'm hyperbolizing, but I think it would be hard for me to over-emphasize the value of techniques like closures, iterators, and currying. They are, in part, what make Lisp so powerful, and the marriage of Lisp's power and Perl's expressivity is a happy one.As for the writing, it is good. The language is clear and the material is well-presented. One should be cautioned, though, that the book is dense. Dominus is constantly pressing onward, explaining new techniques or new ways to apply already-explained techniques. I found myself reading each page carefully and deliberately, only to turn back to it a few pages later, to be sure that I understood how the new material was relying on the old. It made the book a challenge to read, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable challenge. I never felt so frustrated by a bizarre idea that I gave up or so bored with an over-explained one that I skipped ahead.

Finally, while the techniques that Dominus presents are powerful and advanced, the required knowledge of Perl is not particularly great. Because he clearly explains the key Perl concepts that he uses (especially closures and associated scoping issues), any competent programmer with a working knowledge of Perl should be able to put the ideas in Higher Order Perl to work.

For serious Perl programmers, Higher Order Perl is a must-read book.

User review
Functional programming meets Perl, this is something special
In a book market awash with teach-yourself-in-x-time-units, cookbooks, and API tutorials, Higher-Order Perl is ambitious. It attempts to bring functional techniques to Perl, leaning heavily on two language features: closures, and functions as first-class entities. To enjoy this book you need to be completely comfortable with Perl's syntax, there's lots of code to read and digest, and if you can't follow it, you're going to get lost very quickly, because there are lots of new concepts going to be thrown your way. There's no outlandish symbol table hacking, almost no object orientation, not even much use of modules, but it is in a very different style to most of the Perl you're used to.

If, like me, most of the programming languages you're familiar with are more closely related to C than Lisp, this is going to be a challenging read. It's going to take you a long time to get through this book, and it'll probably require re-reading (more than once) to fully get it all. This is a book bursting at the seams with ideas, beginning with recursion, and then onto caching, iterators, streams and currying. The last two chapters show how to apply these techniques to parsing and declarative programming, and they feel like mini books in themselves. Applications of the code range from classics like Tower of Hanoi, Fibonacci sequences and the Newton Raphson method, to more practical material including databases, tied files, and directory walking.

Part of the reason I enjoyed this book so much may be because I have no formal training in Computer Science, and of course, the likes of SICP and The Little Schemer contain similar concepts. But for someone without functional programming experience it's great to have it in Perl. Lispniks, MLers and Haskellites may well be familiar with these ideas already, but they should consider this an enticing 'gateway book' for Perl programmers. And Introduction to Functional Programming using Haskell just isn't as well-written as HOP. There's no hiding from the fact that if you want to fully appreciate the material here, you're going to have to work hard at it, but Mark Jason Dominus does a great job at stopping things from feeling like a textbook, and knows how to inject some wit into the proceedings without being distracting. Full marks to Morgan Kaufmann for the layout and overall production quality, too.

I keep The Camel, Perl Cookbook and Perl Best Practices on my desk when programming Perl. HOP is not going to be joining them (yet), it's not that sort of a book. Instead it's a very different intellectual pleasure and easily one of my favourite and most important Perl books (only PBP edges it out due to the latter's everyday practicality). If you're serious about Perl, you need to read this book. If you're serious about programming, ditto. Hell, this might just be a good enough reason to learn Perl if you don't already (admittedly, the chances of such a person reading this far are small).

HOP has set the bar very high. Python and Ruby authors, please step up!

Dynamics of Knowledge, Corporate Systems and Innovation

Dynamics of Knowledge, Corporate Systems and Innovation
Hiroyuki Itami, Ken Kusunoki, Tsuyoshi Numagami | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 358 | Management
The theme of the book exactly matches the title: the dynamics of knowledge, the corporate system and innovation. Knowledge is created and accumulated in the corporate system, which seeks to utilize it to introduce innovation to the market and society. Corporate organizations generate new knowledge through their in-house R&D activities, and introduce new products and services to the market by combining their own new knowledge and the knowledge generated by others, e.g. universities. Thus, the corporate system is the essential linchpin between knowledge and innovation, and the interactive dynamics between knowledge, the corporate system, and innovation are extremely important. To understand and guide innovative activities in the society, deeper insights into these dynamics are crucial. This book is a step forward in that direction.

Hong Yan | 2002-02-20 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 672 | Engineering
This reference/text contains the latest signal processing techniques in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) for more efficient clinical diagnoses-providing ready-to-use algorithms for image segmentation and analysis, reconstruction and visualization, and removal of distortions and artifacts for increased detection of disease. Detailing cost-effective procedures for improved image and spectrum quality, "Signal Processing for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy" discusses the evaluation of specific shapes and geometric features in MR images; modern strategies for MR data processing; the characterization and analysis of cerebral, muscular, and cardiac tissues; wavelet transform and projection on convex sets (POCS), methods for image reconstruction, restoration, and enhancement; and effective methods for the reduction of ghost artifacts.
Reviews
Its a good book for basic information on various aspects of MRI signal processing. Its main focus is on MRI imaging. It however lacks information on parallel imaging.

Introduction to Radar Systems, 3 Edition

Introduction to Radar Systems, 3 Edition
Merrill I. Skolnik | 2002-01-01 00:00:00 | McGraw-Hill Science/Engineering/Math | 772 | Other Engineering
Since the publication of the second edition of "Introduction to Radar Systems," there has been continual development of new radar capabilities and continual improvements to the technology and practice of radar. This growth has necessitated the addition and updating of the following topics for the third edition: digital technology, automatic detection and tracking, doppler technology, airborne radar, and target recognition. The topic coverage is one of the great strengths of the text. In addition to a thorough revision of topics, and deletion of obsolete material, the author has added end-of-chapter problems to enhance the "teachability" of this classic book in the classroom, as well as for self-study for practicing engineers.
