Direct from IBM, this comprehensive day-to-day reference for running DB2 UDB in OS/390 environments is also the only book that delivers the depth of knowledge professionals need to pass IBM's challenging DB2 for OS/390 application certification exam (exam 514). Full of useful tips, practical techniques, and expert guidelines, it covers virtually every aspect of working with DB2 UDB in OS/390 and z/OS environments: administration, connectivity, middleware, development, and much more. This book is part of the IBM Toronto Lab's DB2 Certification program. This book and CD-ROM will help candidates prepare for taking Exam 512 and Exam 516 that leads to an IBM Certification in Database Administration for OS/390.
Reviews
This book is quite possibly the worst written technical book I have read in my 18 year career. It seems as if the driest and dullest portions of the DB2 manuals have been extracted and collected together and called a book; without any regard to editing or amending with graphics.

The material in the book may well cover the necessary topics for the certification test, but the stamina necessary to read it makes this choice clearly a poor one. You would be much better off reading Craig Mullins' latest DB2 Developer's Guide and portions of the DB2 Administration Guide to in preparation for the exams.

I give this book 2 stars only because the material covered seems to closely match what is on the test. Extracting the information from this book, however, is another matter.
Reviews
It doesnt give you the indepth details for the 702 certification... All topics are covered as an overview
Reviews
This book is great for DB2 beginners. It has right structure, covers material in sequential order and does not talk much about insignificant matters just to increase the volume, like many other books do. In my view, only one but significant flaw doesn't allow me to call this book exellent - lots of errors and typos in the examples. They are mostly insignificant but very confusing for a novice. I hope the author sorts them out in the second edition which this book definitely deserves.
Reviews
Besides getting you ready for the certification examination this book is an excellent reference source and covers some material far better than other similar books on the market. If you only want to buy a few books on this subject, start with this one. You may find you don't need any others.
Reviews
This is an excellent book that gives an overall picture of what to expect for the z/OS 702 Examination. The certification portions have all been covered well. Except for a few typos in a few places, this book is an excellent material and is a handy book for a DBA. I certainly recommend it to anyone wishing to pursue DB2 702 certification.

The Hundred Languages of Children

The Hundred Languages of Children
C. Edwards, L. Gandini | 1998-01-01 00:00:00 | Elsevier Science | 520 | Psychology
The city-run early childhood program of Reggio Emilia, Italy, has become recognized and acclaimed as one of the best systems of education in the world. Over the past forty years, educators there have evolved a distinctive innovative approach that supports children's well-being and fosters their intellectual development through a systematic focus on symbolic representation. Young children (from birth to age six) are encouraged to explore their environment and express themselves through many "languages," or modes of expression, including words, movement, drawing, painting, sculpture, shadow play, collage, and music. Leading children to surprising levels of symbolic skill and creativity, the system is not private and elite but rather involves full-day child care open to all, including children with disabilities.

This new Second Edition reflects the growing interest and deepening reflection upon the Reggio approach, as well as increasing sophistication in adaptation to the American context. Included are many entirely new chapters and an updated list of resources, along with original chapters revised and extended. The book represents a dialogue between Italian educators who founded and developed the system and North Americans who have considered its implications for their own settings and issues. The book is a comprehensive introduction covering history and philosophy, the parent perspective, curriculum and methods of teaching, school and system organization, the use of space and physical environments, and adult professional roles including special education. The final section describes implications for American policy and professional development and adaptations in United States primary, preschool, and child care classrooms.

Thomas Aquinas (Philosophers in 90 Minutes)

Thomas Aquinas (Philosophers in 90 Minutes)
Paul Strathern | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Blackstone Audiobooks | 0 | Philosophy
These concise and enlightening explorations of our greatest thinkers bring their ideas to life in an entertaining and accessible fashion. Philosophical thought is deciphered and made comprehensible and interesting to almost everyone. Far from being a novelty, each book is a highly refined appraisal of the philosopher and his work, authoritative and clearly presented.
In yet another of his popular books explaining the ideas of the great philosophers in accessible language, Paul Strathern takes on "a shadowy figure amongst the incense clouds of theology," who also happens to be "the finest philosophical mind in Europe for a thousand years (since St. Augustine)," St. Thomas Aquinas. Strathern applies his trademark humor to the Summa Theologica ("Christianity's answer to the Talmud") and the Summa Contra Gentiles, whose "imaginary reader is generally reckoned to be an intellectual Arab. After being subjected to hundreds of pages demonstrating the incontrovertible truth of the Christian religion, it is assumed that he has no alternative but to forswear Islam and embrace Christianity. How many intellectual Arabs subjected themselves to this grueling experience and reached the same conclusion is unknown." Underneath the gags, however, you'll gain a reasonable summation of Aquinas's impact on the scholasticism of his era and the validity of his continued, if somewhat diminished, relevance to present-day philosophy.
Reviews
St. Thomas Aquinas is one of the greatest thinkers in Church history. More than 25 Popes have lauded Aquinas as the Church's preeminent theologian. His most well-known work is his hefty "Summa Theologica", which includes arguments for the existence of God, his understanding of man's nature, and his writings on virtue and sin.

But while many are familiar with Aquinas the theologian, few people know Aquinas the man. Three of my favorite theologians have written great biographies of Aquinas--G.K. Chesteron, Fr. Robert Barron, and Fr. Aidan Nichols--but each is a more advanced study of Aquinas' life. "Thomas Aquinas In 90 Minutes", however, offers a shorter, more accessible look at this brilliant, holy man. The book begins with a quick overview of Thomas' childhood, then quickly moves into his thought and impact on scholasticism. Written with a light, humorous approach, the book really can be read in 90 minutes.

Read this book for a brisk, easy introduction to Aquinas' life.
Reviews
In Feb., on Maui, my wife found this book in our condo laundry room. and, I read it. I liked it so much, I have not only acquired it, but, most of the 90 Minute series. I keep reading and adding.
Reviews
Assuming good faith, I'm not quite sure why this book was written. There's very little discussion about and explanation of Thomas' philosophy. Filling his book with put-downs from page one, dripping with sarcasm, the author comes across as a stellar example of late 20th century intellectual snobbery. If you're looking for a concise beginner's introduction to Aquinas' influential thought, this is not it. The only practical use I can think of for this book would be as fodder for a study of published modern anti-Catholic "intellectualism."

Reviews
Strathern says Thomas Aquinas was a towering figure of Medieval philosophy. I had to read another book (Aquinas for Armchair Theologians) to find out why.

Strathern is less interested in revealing Aquinas' philosophy than in reviling his theology. Strathern outlines Aquinas' life, discusses Aquinas' philosophical errors, and ridicules Aquinas' theology. Along the way, he succeeds in ignoring almost every important contribution Aquinas made to the history of Western thought. E.g., Aquinas' profound effect on the thought of Martin Luther King, Jr., helped shape the American Civil Rights movement. But why write about that when you can lampoon Aquinas for making philosophical arguments in support of Christianity?

In the last paragraph of his afterword Strathern celebrates Descartes' dictum "cogito ergo sum" because with it, modern philosophy had begun and the cobwebs of Aquinas' teachings were "swept away forever." A reading of Descartes' "Discourse on Method" reveals that Descartes reasoned from "cogito ergo sum" to the existence of God. Far from "sweeping away" Aquinas' cobwebs, Descartes seems to be very much entangled in them. The belief that reason could provide a pathway to God was not original to Descartes, Aquinas thought of it a few centuries before Descartes' time. There are still enough of Aquinas' cobwebs around for Martin Luther King, Jr., to have quoted Aquinas in his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," and for George Bush, Sr., to have patterned his speech justifying Desert Storm after Aquinas' model for the just war.

Almost everything about modern thought is influenced by Thomas Aquinas, from Greenpeace to the World Court. You won't learn how reading this book. Read "Aquinas for Armchair Theologians" instead.
Reviews
I am so glad I was able to obtain this book on loan because I can think of much better ways to spend my money. I was so hopeful when I started this reading that I would get a general idea of the philosophies of Aquinas. Obviously I did not expect to get to know him intimatly. What I got was a sarcastic and condescending review of a man who has greatly impacted the catholic church (the author claims that without Aquinas, the church may not have survived) and thus western civilization. I wish I had read the other reviews here first. The book presents itself as being biographical and unbiased but from page one you learn of the author's obvious distaste for Aquinas. I don't mind this sort of writing, only that I would like to know what I am in for. But worse, the books claims it will help you understand Aquinas but instead the author wanders off on barely related topics leaving me with no more information about Aquinas' philosophies than when I began.

Introduction to Product/Service-System Design

Introduction to Product/Service-System Design
Tomohiko Sakao, Mattias Lindahl | 2009-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 279 | Other Engineering
The growing need for companies to address service design, as well as product design, in an integrated manner is becoming increasingly important across a number of industries. Product/Service System (PSS) is a promising business model that companies can use to increase their sustainability in a mature economy. Introduction to Product/Service-System Design contains a collection of practical examples demonstrating how to design a PSS in industry. These recent examples are the results of applying various theories developed in different countries and therefore accommodating diverse cultural differences from throughout Europe and Japan.

Providing a useful overall guide to the state of the art in theory and practice, each chapter covers the cutting edge of a different methodology or practice. As any PSS design should, in principle, address the offering, the customer or user, and the provider, the book is arranged according to these three dimensions, providing detailed information on how to incorporate such themes into a working design. The book̢۪s focus on design is also evident in the discussion of how to anticipate and utilise the various dynamics within each dimension.

Introduction to Product/Service-System Design will help improve working processes and inspire creative thinking for the wide range of people involved in designing a PSS: designers, marketing professionals, sales staff, production engineers, and service engineers. It can also serve as a reference book for university students on advanced courses related to mechanical design, industrial marketing or economics, and production engineering.

Complex manifolds (Athena series; selected topics in mathematics)

Complex manifolds (Athena series; selected topics in mathematics)
James Morrow | 1971-01-01 00:00:00 | Holt, Rinehart and Winston | 192 | Mathematics
This volume serves as an introduction to the Kodaira-Spencer theory of deformations of complex structures. Based on notes taken by James Morrow from lectures given by Kunihiko Kodaira at Stanford University in 1965-1966, the book gives the original proof of the Kodaira embedding theorem, showing that the restricted class of Kähler manifolds called Hodge manifolds is algebraic. Included are the semicontinuity theorems and the local completeness theorem of Kuranishi. Readers are assumed to know some algebraic topology. Complete references are given for the results that are used from elliptic partial differential equations. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in abstract complex manifolds.

Practical Aspects of Trapped Ion Mass Spectrometry, Volume IV: Theory and Instrumentation

Practical Aspects of Trapped Ion Mass Spectrometry, Volume IV: Theory and Instrumentation
Raymond E. March, John F. J. Todd | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | CRC Press | 950 | Physics
Reflecting the substantial increase in popularity of quadrupole ion traps and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometers, Practical Aspects of Trapped Ion Mass Spectrometry, Volume IV: Theory and Instrumentation explores the historical origins of the latest advances in this expanding field. It covers new methods for trapping ions, such as the Orbitrapâ„¢, the digital ion trap (DIT), the rectilinear ion trap (RIT), and the toroidal ion trap; the development and application of the quadrupole ion trap (QIT) and the quadrupole linear ion trap (LIT); and the introduction of high-field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS).

After a combined appreciation and historical survey of mass spectrometry and a discussion of how improved capabilities for microfabrication have led to interest in arrays of ion traps, the book examines the theory and practice of the Orbitrap mass analyzer, the rectangular waveform-driven DIT mass spectrometer, FAIMS, and ion traps with circular geometries. It next discusses ion accumulation for increasing sensitivity in FT-ICR spectrometry, a radio frequency-only-mode event for Penning traps in FT MS, and an FT operating mode applied to a 3D-QIT. The text then presents three behavioral aspects of quadrupole rod sets, before illustrating the development of the 3D-QIT in recent years. The final chapters explore photodissociation in ion traps and the chemical and photochemical studies of metal dication complexes in a 3D-QIT.

In this volume that spans twenty-one chapters, a stellar panel of leading experts and up-and-coming researchers presents a cohesive, global, and up-to-date view of the practical aspects of using trapped ion devices. A companion to Volume V: Applications of Ion Trapping Devices, the book authoritatively covers the theory involved as well as the instrumentation currently used in this dynamic field.

China Dawn: The Story of a Technology and Business Revolution

China Dawn: The Story of a Technology and Business Revolution
David Sheff | 2002-03-01 00:00:00 | HarperBusiness | 320 | Business

Imagine living through the breakthrough moments of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and the other icons of today's new economy. The kind of technological revolution that they led in Silicon Valley is now sweeping through China, but with much more dramatic implications. The dynamic entrepreneurs who are using technology to radically transform business and cultural life in China are fighting not only outdated business models and a tumultuous economy but also an unpredictable government that has a love-hate relationship with the Net, at once pushing its expansion at a feverish pace and censoring it. As Duncan Clark, cofounder of BDA, an Internet consulting company in Beijing, told author David Sheff, "This environment -- the regulations, the competition, the political uncertainties -- makes these the fastest, most courageous, nimblest-thinking people globally. To deal with this level of risk and still sleep is no small accomplishment. But they're hooked on it like some Chinese are becoming hooked on Starbucks cappuccino."

In this irresistible, groundbreaking book, Sheff takes us into the trenches of the Chinese technology revolution, introducing the major and minor players who are leading China into the twenty-first century. Players like Bo Feng, the charismatic former sushi chef who is now one of the leading venture capitalists in China. And Edward Tian, a national hero who has been described as China's Steve Jobs and Bill Gates combined, who left his own start-up on the eve of its IPO in order to lead the government's attempt to bring broadband to the entire nation, in the process leapfrogging the United States, Europe, and the rest of Asia with the longest and fastest network in the world.

As the U.S. technological revolution wanes, business leaders will be looking to the billion-plus potential customers in China for new growth. In addition, the world's newest member of the World Trade Organization will no longer be a bystander in the global economy; it will be a fierce competitor. And when hundreds of million Chinese have access to unprecedented information and communication, China itself will be profoundly altered. Jay Chang, an analyst who covers China for Credit Suisse First Boston, sums the seismic nature of the changes: "What happens when China successfully transforms from a mainly agrarian/industrial nation into one that has significant input from the information technology industry? What happens when eighty percent of the state-owned enterprises in China are able to link economically to the global Internet on fast pipes? What happens when China's engineering talent pool is able to gain access to high-end computing resources and exchange ideas and information easily with their global peers? What happens when fifty percent of the Chinese population gets wired in ten years -- six hundred million people, the largest number of Internet users in the world?" With its compelling, character-driven story, researched over the course of three years, China Dawn will be the definitive book on the subject.
"In China, I feel the explosive combination of forces aligning to create the kind of change that alters the course of history," writes David Sheff in the introduction to China Dawn, his book on the entrepreneurs who are trying to spark a social transformation and make a mint as they bring the latest information technology to the planet's most populous country. The idealistic heroes of this story are Bo Feng and Edward Tian, both friends of the author. Feng is a Marin County busboy who becomes one of China's top venture capitalists; Tian is the cofounder of AsiaInfo, the first private Chinese firm to go public in the West. Like so many others, Feng and Tian were deeply affected by the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, and they believe the Internet can set their country on an irreversible course toward freedom. At bottom, though, China Dawn is an engaging business book that chronicles the "unlikely group of revolutionaries" who hope to become the Bill Gates and Andy Groves of their country. It is difficult to know whether they will succeed, but hard not to wish them luck. --John Miller
Reviews
This book gives us an insight into the brave, opportunistic, patriotic entrepeneurs who decided to have a run for their money investing in the IT industry in China. The author happened to be intimate friends to the entrepeneurs (venture capitalists and founders of IT companies) mentioned and suffice to say that this is like a documentary as we were brought into the environment where they sought for opportunities, negotiating and bargaining for their positions, keeping the "ship" afloat by ensuring the new enterprises are making money and ensuring that they are keeping the Chinese Government and shareholders happy at the same time. This is easily said than done as Chinese government is cautious about relinquishing too much contol to the public (stock options to the staff wasn't heard of before) and that opening up China to the world would mean free attainment of information. As Chinese firmly believes, information is power, a power that can change the destiny of a nation. This book is written when China was working hard to be inducted into the WTO and before China was announced to be the country to host the next Olympics. Suffice to say that this book is like a time capsule or a yardstick to see how much China has gone since and asking if China is progressing any further. Whilst this is a business book, it is also a book touching upon issues of self-sacrifice as the entrepeneurs are forever on the road at the expense of spending quality time with their young family and also dwelled upon the past of Cultural Revolution and other presecutions that created or formed the personalities and traits of the present Chinese generations that would move mountain and ocean to do what needs to be done to actualise their vision. The old adage of "if the experience doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger" is very relevant in this instance. A contagious book to read, a book about humanity and a book that reminds us how quick China has grown in so little time. Napoleon was right to say that when the dragon wakes up, the whole world shall shudder. Highly recommended!
Reviews
This book was a fascinating read, and presents a personal take on the growth of technology and the rise of entrepreneurship in China. However, at points in the book, it seemed that the author is a bit too optimistic and overlooks some of the major challenges against China becoming a high-tech superpower.
Reviews
The characters in this book are not what the book described since the author is the personal friend of the characters. This is purely free publicity for them. Search the web and you will find other comments about the auther. The latest story is the VCs have splited since they can't really get along, and the politics in the VC firm was unbearable with just a few people. Most of the portfolio companies are in bad shape. The VC's website has not been updated since 2001, wonder why. If you really want to know about IT in China, then you should learn from other sources. Most of the IT companies in China are not making money. This book only gives you a picture of the early dotcom years and we all know what happened. Don't judge the book by the cover or the content. It is only a perspective from one person.
Reviews
This book was awesome, I highly recommend it as a great introductory book into the business revolution in China, however it does not go too much in depth into the complexities of China's evolution in the past 20 years. But Sheff tells a great story and it is definitly a page turner!
Reviews
One of the best business books I have ever read. It is an inspiring story, written with insight and passion. I'm ready to pack up and head to China.

Theosis in the Theology of Thomas Torrance (Ashgate New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology, and Biblical Studies)

Theosis in the Theology of Thomas Torrance (Ashgate New Critical Thinking in Religion, Theology, and Biblical Studies)
Myk Habets | 2009-08-28 00:00:00 | Ashgate | 224 | Theology
Torrance's vision of Theosis (deification/divinization) is explored through his doctrine of creation and anthropology, his characterization of the incarnation, his accounts of reconciliation and union with Christ, and his theology of church and sacraments. Myk Habets study distinguishes Torrance's vision of theosis from other possible accounts of salvation as divinization, and situates it within Reformed Theology, and informed by patristic thought and opposed to some constructions of the doctrine within Eastern Orthodoxy. This book presents the first critique of the theology of T.F. Torrance to focus on theosis, and presents a model of theosis within the realm of reformed theology built upon Western theology.

Introduction to Statistical Decision Theory

Introduction to Statistical Decision Theory
John W. Pratt,Howard Raiffa,Robert Schlaifer | 1995-03-27 00:00:00 | The MIT Press | 895 | Economics
The Bayesian revolution in statistics - where statistics is integrated with decision making in areas such as management, public policy, engineering, and clinical medicine - is here to stay. Introduction to Statistical Decision Theory states the case and in a self-contained, comprehensive way shows how the approach is operational and relevant for real-world decision making under uncertainty. Starting with an extensive account of the foundations of decision theory, the authors develop the intertwining concepts of subjective probability and utility. They then systematically and comprehensively examine the Bernoulli, Poisson, and Normal (univariate and multivariate) data generating processes. For each process they consider how prior judgments about the uncertain parameters of the process are modified given the results of statistical sampling, and they investigate typical decision problems in which the main sources of uncertainty are the population parameters. They also discuss the value of sampling information and optimal sample sizes given sampling costs and the economics of the terminal decision problems. Unlike most introductory texts in statistics, Introduction to Statistical Decision Theory integrates statistical inference with decision making and discusses real-world actions involving economic payoffs and risks. After developing the rationale and demonstrating the power and relevance of the subjective, decision approach, the text also examines and critiques the limitations of the objective, classical approach.
Reviews
This is a very accessible introduction to Bayesian statistics and its applications in economics and management science. The book would make an interesting and useful two semester course at the sophomore or junior level. The mathematical prerequisites are small - some calculus, but the book manages to introduce basic probability, stochastic processes, statistical inference, large sample theory, the multivariate normal distribution, and topics related to economics such as utility functions, lotteries, decision trees and portfolio theory. These topics are useful to students in a wide variety of disciplines: economics, finance, computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, and students in the sciences which may end up in the bio/health sciences (medial decision making). In addition with the growing prevalence of Bayesian computation across disciplines, it seems like a lost opportunity not to offer such a course.

The Fortunate Pilgrim

The Fortunate Pilgrim
Mario Puzo | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Brilliance Audio | 0 | Audio Books
Before The Godfatherand The Last Don, Mario Puzo wrote The Fortunate Pilgrim, a novel many believe to be one of the classics of Italian-American fiction. In this special edition, Mario Puzo's legions of fans will discover a different side of this legendary author, writing for the first time about an Italian family in which a woman holds the power.

Lucia Santa has traveled three thousand miles of dark ocean, from the mountain farms of Italy to the streets of New York, hoping for a better life. Instead, she finds herself in Hell's Kitchen, in a bad marriage, raising six children on her own. As Lucia struggles to hold her family together, her daughter confronts the adult world of work and romance while her eldest son is drawn into the Mafia. Meanwhile, her youngest son aspires to American pursuits she cannot understand.

Mario Puzo wrote this book from his heart. It is based on his mother's stories that she shared with him. He had worked an administrative job for twenty years and wrote this book in his spare time. Although "The Fortunate Pilgrim" was greatly acclaimed, he didn't make any money and couldn't quit his job as he had to support his family. So to make money, he wrote "The Godfather" simply for commercial purposes. He says that even the character of the Godfather is based on traits of his mother.

Application Servers for E-Business

Application Servers for E-Business
| 2001-01-23 00:00:00 | | 0 | Application Servers

The modern application server is a complex platform that is the linchpin of an enterprise environment that includes a very wide range of technologies-web document formatting, web protocols, server-side scripts, servlets, applets, programming languages, distributed object technologies, security capabilities, directory and naming services, load balancing, system management, and others. As such, it can be a daunting task to try to comprehend these systems. Application Servers for E-Business helps you understand the use of application servers in e-business. The book presents a comprehensive overview of the technologies related to application servers in their facilitation of E-business. These technologies include CORBA, Java, Enterprise Java Beans, Java 2, web servers, and legacy systems. It explores the role these servers play in the modern enterprise IT infrastructure and the environment in which they operate. The material also includes implementation considerations for application servers, including security, scalability, load balancing, and fault tolerance.Chapter one provides an overview of application servers, the evolution of computing that took us from hierarchical, mainframe-centric environments to the web model of computing, and the rationale for E-commerce and E-business. Chapters two through five cover specific technologies, from web browsers and servers to applets and servlets. Chapter three provides an overview of Java technologies, and chapter four covers CORBA. Chapter five discusses application servers in detail. Since application servers are increasingly supporting the key mission-critical processes of an enterprise, it is critical that organizations deploying them build in `enterprise-class` facilities for security, scalability, load balancing, fault tolerance, and management. Chapter six discusses these deployment design issues. The book concludes with chapter seven, a chapter that presents several examples of the advantages of application servers in large enterprises. It also presents two case studies that illustrate the decision process, and an overview of seventeen application servers. The chapters are organized in a straightforward manner, with section and subsections clearly indicated so that they can be easily skimmed. The comprehensive coverage offered in this book makes it an ideal reference for IT management and staff responsible for specifying, designing, evaluating, and implementing electronic commerce solutions.

Should have had `dot.com` at the end of the title
This book was like the now rapidly failing `dot.coms`. A title to grab you but no content. This is not a book about e-business despite what it says on the cover! There is hardly anything on e-business let alone how you can use App. Servers to get e-business going. Even the stuff on App. Servers wasn't very detailed. This is like a vanity press book.

User review
Lots of Preamble, Little in the Way of Insights
A great example that having Word 7 on a computer does not automatically qualify you to think you are a writer. This book, despite its promising title, devotes undue space and effort to introduction, upon introduction and does not bother to get into too much details. The title should read `A High Level Overview of App. Servers`. If you know your basic Web stuff (like what Java, HTML, XML is) this book will leave dangling ,,. constantly asking `where is the beef?` Not a book for developers who want to know what they may be getting into.

Polymer Tribology

Polymer Tribology
Sujeet K. Sinha (Author, Editor), Brian J Briscoe (Editor) | 2009-03-25 00:00:00 | Imperial College Press | 724 | Chemical Engineering
This book deals with the new and now-expanding field of friction, wear, and other surface-related mechanical phenomena for polymers. Polymers have been used in various forms such as bulk, films, and composites in applications where their friction, wear resistance, and other surface-related properties have been effectively utilized. There are also many examples in which polymers have performed extremely well, such as in tyres, shoes, brakes, gears, bearings, small moving parts in electronics and MEMS, cosmetics/hair products, and artificial human joints. Around the world, much research is currently being undertaken to develop new polymers, in different forms, for further enhancing tribological performance and for finding novel applications. Keeping in view the importance of tribology of polymers for research and technology as well as the vast literature that is now available in research papers and review articles, this timely book brings together a wealth of research data for an understanding of the basic principles of the subject.

It?s all there in the unique Murach style that has been training professional programmers for more than 25 years.

User review
Great Java Book for IBM mainframers
I have many of Mike Murach's books and I like the way they are organized. I would recommend this for any IBM mainframe programmers trying to learn Java (like me). I am still reading it, but am positive this is the one of many Java books you need to have.

User review
a very easy way to learn java
simple step by step instructions. very easy to follow

User review
The best book to start in java
When I began studying Java, a friend of mine recommended me this book and it was perfect because I could learned the essential Java skills, object-oriented programming, Swing and so on. Besides, I could understand how to work with float values in my business application by using the class Big Decimal in order not to lose precision and digits.

Therefore, I can confidently say that this book is an excellent choice for learning Java and developing high quality software.

User review
Good textbook with minor errors and not very consistent structure
I am taking my Begining Java Class now and we use this textbook. Overall book is good although with some errors in text and some of the code is hard to understand without whole program code. My instructor studied on previous edition and said that previous edition was better structured.

User review
Mainframers, this is your book!
As a mainframe software engineer with over twenty years in the business, I have for several years now seen the need and have endeavored to learn some Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) language such as C++ or Java. Until recently, though, all I have had to show for my efforts is a stack of highly-rated but little-read books on the subject. The reason they are little-read is I would get about 4 chapters in to the book, only to get utterly lost and give up, and toss the C++ or Java book onto a stack of similar books in the corner of my home office, fighting the despair that I would ever learn any of this stuff.

Eventually, I got hold of Beginning Java2 (JDK 5) by Lowe, Murach, and Steelman; published by Murach and Associates. As a result of working through this book, I am glad to report that I am finally successfully writing programs using weird and bizarre (to us mainframers) things such as Classes, Objects, Constructors, Methods, Inheritance, and Polymorphism; and I am actually understanding what is going on. Even more shocking, it is fun!

I think the problem with all those other books was that they assumed the reader either knew something about Object Oriented programming, or knew nothing about any kind of programming. However, I think for some of us, when approaching OOP, knowing mainframe programming is worse than knowing nothing. This Java book clearly explains things in ways that we mainframe people can easily latch onto.

If you want to finally, successfully make the jump from legacy work to Object Oriented, this is your book.

A comprehensive examination consisting of USMLE-style questions appears at the end of the book.

Reviews
Traditional BRS books. They're great. Not much more can be said about them.
Reviews
This is not for board review and not exactly high yield for finals either. It has way too many mistakes for being the fifth edition. The ANS section is by far the most unwell written chapter.
Reviews
This is a good supplement to class notes and First Aid for pharm if you need to go above and beyond. However, it is very detailed compared with other titles in the BRS series. I found it too detailed for my pharmacology class and too time consuming for board prep.
Reviews
This is a new edition. Disregard the other reviews about the older, outdated edition.
Reviews
I was one of the few people in my medical school class that liked this book. I used it as a supplement to my class notes and pharmcards to study for pharmacology. I used it in addition to FirstAid to study for the boards. I found it to be excellent. I like the outline format. I found that it hit upon the pertain side effects and interactions, and I liked the organization. Mechanism of action descriptions were adequate for nearly all questions I was asked. Most in my class used the Lippicontt Illustrated Reviews Pharmacology book. But, they weren't #1 in their class for both Pharm I and Pharm II in medical school. I was. It is a good book. It is a little old now, and is certainly over-due for a new edition. I hope they come out with one. This book presents the facts concisely without a lot of fluff. Give it a shot. And, its cheaper.

El Lenguaje del cine (Spanish Edition)

El Lenguaje del cine (Spanish Edition)
Marcel Martin | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Gedisa Editorial | 272 | Movies
--- from book's back cover
