Release your brakes!

Release your brakes!
James W. Newman, Art Linkletter | 1978-01-01 00:00:00 | Warner Books | 331 | Psychology
This is one of my favorite all-time books. I keep going back and back to it. Everyone today seems excited about the book, DVD and CD about "The Secret." This book by James Newman has everything "The Secret" has, but in plain, everyday language with specific steps on how to achieve what you want. And it doesn't have all the glossy PR, Hollywood production promo "The Secret" has. I met James Newman before he passed away, he is an honest, solid, sincere guy...unlike many of the "promo artists" giving their "schpeel" (is that how you spell it?) about "The Secret" on Oprah, Larry King, etc. "Release Your Brakes" is very special. Strongly recommended.

Finite Elements: Theory, Fast Solvers, and Applications in Solid Mechanics

Finite Elements: Theory, Fast Solvers, and Applications in Solid Mechanics
Dietrich Braess | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press; 3 edition | 384 | Mathematics
This definitive introduction to finite element methods has been thoroughly updated for a third edition which features important new material for both research and application of the finite element method. The discussion of saddle-point problems is a highlight of the book and has been elaborated to include many more nonstandard applications. The chapter on applications in elasticity now contains a complete discussion of locking phenomena. The numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations is an important application of finite elements and the author discusses this subject comprehensively. These equations are treated as variational problems for which the Sobolev spaces are the right framework. Graduate students who do not necessarily have any particular background in differential equations, but require an introduction to finite element methods will find this text invaluable. Specifically, the chapter on finite elements in solid mechanics provides a bridge between mathematics and engineering.

Review
'This is a well written book on the mathematical foundation of the finite element method which should appeal to graduate mathematicians and researchers in numerical methods and theoretical mechanics. The coverage of the mathematical theories used in the finite element formulation is comprehensive.' A. A. Becker, Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science

' an excellent book on the subject, with respect to contents, readability as well as presentation highly recommended.' Michael Schafer, Zentralblatt fur Mathematik

' has advanced to be one of the most commonly used textbooks in this area.' Monatshefte fur Mathematik

Carefully written and remarkably error-free, Braess's book introduces partial differential equations (PDEs) and methods used to solve them numerically. It introduces PDEs and their classification, covers (briefly) finite-difference methods, and then offers a thorough treatment of finite-element methods, both conforming and nonconforming. After discussing the conjugate gradient method and multigrid methods, Braess concludes with a chapter on finite elements in solid mechanics. The book is written from a theoretical standpoint, and the standard convergence theorems and error estimates are provided and proved. Although a background in differential equations, analysis, and linear algebra is not necessary to read the book, it would be helpful. The level is that of a graduate course in a mathematics department. Practical considerations for coding the various methods are only occasionally discussed. There are exercises at the end of each section varying from two to six problems, about two-thirds of them theoretical in nature. The book can be used as a resource. Extensive and valuable bibliography. Recommended for graduate students. J. H. Ellison, Grove City College

The Apocalypse Troll

The Apocalypse Troll
David Weber | 2000-01-01 00:00:00 | Baen | 416 | Fiction
There he was in his sailboat in the middle of the Atlantic, all alone and loving it. Well, there was a US Navy carrier group on his southern horizon, but he was a Navy guy himself, so he didn't mind. Then came the UFOs, hurtling in from the Outer Black to overfly the carriers at Mach 17. Their impossible aerobatics were bad enough—but then they started shooting at each other. And at the Navy. With nukes. Little ones at first, but winding up with a 500 megatonner at 90 miles that fried every piece of electronics within line-of-sight....

Imprisoned Intellectuals: America's Political Prisoners Write on Life, Liberation, and Rebellion

Imprisoned Intellectuals: America's Political Prisoners Write on Life, Liberation, and Rebellion
Joy James | 2003-03-04 00:00:00 | Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc. | 384 | Criminology
"Prisons constitute one of the most controversial and contested sites in a democratic society. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the industrialized world, with over 2 million people in jails, prisons, and detention centers; with over three thousand on death row, it is also one of the few developed countries that continues to deploy the death penalty. International Human Rights Organizations such as Amnesty International have also noted the scores of political prisoners in U.S. detention. This anthology examines a class of intellectuals whose analyses of U.S. society, politics, culture and social justice are rarely referenced in conventional political speech or academic discourse. Yet this body of outlawed public intellectuals" offers some of the most incisive analyses of our society and shared humanity. Focusing on prisons as intellectual and political sites unauthorized by the state, this anthology of writings by imprisoned intellectuals in opposition to state policies that support racism, war, imperialism, corporate capitalism/ globalization, addresses diverse social and political issues. These essays are by writer-activists incarcerated because of their political beliefs and acts (some released by President Bill Clinton on his last day of office, others working as educators and activists behind bars), or politicized while incarcerated for social crimes, offer some controversial and thought-provoking theories of contemporary social change and liberation movements. Here former and current U.S. political prisoners and activists-writers from the civil rights/black power, women's, gay/lesbian, American Indian, Puerto Rican Independence and anti-war movements share varying progressive critiques and theories on radical democracy and revolutionary struggle. This rarely-referenced "resistance literature" reflects the growing public interest in incarceration sites, intellectual and political dissent for social justice, and the possibilities of democratic transformations. Such anthologies also spark new discussions and debates about "reading"; for as Barbara Harlow notes: "Reading prison writing must. . . demand a correspondingly activist counterapproach to that of passivity, aesthetic gratification, and the pleasures of consumption that are traditionally sanctioned by the academic disciplining of literature."--Barbara Harlow [1]"

Low Temperature Electronics: Physics, Devices, Circuits, and Applications

Low Temperature Electronics: Physics, Devices, Circuits, and Applications
Edmundo A. Gutierrez-D, Jamal Deen (Authors), C. Claeys, Jamal Deen (Editors) | 2001-01-01 00:00:00 | Academic Press; 1st edition | 964 | Physics
Low Temperature Electronics: Physics, Devices, Circuits, and Applications summarizes the recent advances in cryoelectronics starting from the fundamentals in physics and semiconductor devices to electronic systems, hybrid superconductor-semiconductor technologies, photonic devices, cryocoolers and thermal management. Furthermore, this book provides an exploration of the currently available theory, research, and technologies related to cryoelectronics, including treatment of the solid state physical properties of the materials used in these systems.

Current applications are found in infrared systems, satellite communications and medical equipment. There are opportunities to expand in newer fields such as wireless and mobile communications, computers, and measurement and scientific equipment. Low temperature operations can offer certain advantages such as higher operational speeds, lower power dissipation, shorter signal transmission times, higher semiconductor and metal thermal conductivities, and improved digital and analog circuit performance.

The computer, telecommunication, and cellular phone market is pushing the semiconductor industry towards the development of very aggressive device and integrated circuit fabrication technologies. This is taking these technologies towards the physical miniaturization limit, where quantum effects and fabrication costs are becoming a technological and economical barrier for further development. In view of these limitations, operation of semiconductor devices and circuits at low temperature (cryogenic temperature) is studied in this book.

* It is a book intended for a wide audience: students, scientists, technology development engineers, private companies, universities, etc.
* It contains information which is for the first time available as an all-in-one source; Interdisciplinary material is arranged and made compatible in this book
* It is a must as reference source

Review

Summary: A seminal work in the field
Rating: 5

This is one of the first books that fully addresses the importance of silicon-based low temperature electronics. As technology evolves, humankind has found more and more applications for electronic systems, operating at evermore higher frequencies. The operation of silicon devices and circuits at cryogenic temperatures allows for "inexpensive" yet high performance electronics. A few years down the road, this book will be recognized as a seminal work in the field.

Central Banking in Theory and Practice (Lionel Robbins Lectures)

Central Banking in Theory and Practice (Lionel Robbins Lectures)
Alan S. Blinder | 1999-01-29 00:00:00 | The MIT Press | 108 | Economics
"This brief exposé of central banking and monetary policy. . . should be required reading for all those, specialists and nonspecialists alike, interested in those subjects." -- Manuel Guitián, Finance and Development

Alan S. Blinder offers the dual perspective of a leading academic macroeconomist who served a stint as Vice-Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board--one who practiced what he had long preached and then returned to academia to write about it. He tells central bankers how they might better incorporate academic knowledge and thinking into the conduct of monetary policy, and he tells scholars how they might reorient their research to be more attuned to reality and thus more useful to central bankers.

Based on the 1996 Lionel Robbins Lectures, this readable book deals succinctly, in a nontechnical manner, with a wide variety of issues in monetary policy. The book also includes the author's suggested solution to an age-old problem in monetary theory: what it means for monetary policy to be "neutral."
Reviews
Easy read, gives some insight to one of the former FED staffers. Proves that there is no magic to our money, just gut reaction and formulas. No one really know's what to do
Reviews
Mr R. S. Ritterman (San Mateo, CA) beat me to it... I had logged on to describe just how clear and understandable (not to mention brilliant and profound) this book is. Case in point: instead of simply telling us in words how central bankers evaluate their objectives before making policy decisions, Mr Blinder uses beautifully contructed clever-clogs math to make his point concise. Greenspan gets all the credit, but I assure you it was Blinder who was the real brains behind the operation. I thought about deducting one star because they didn't get the fed funds rate right - by his own admission - in 1990, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

Students of philosophy will be talking about this gem for hundreds of years.

Verdict: Add to Cart!
Reviews
After having taken Macroeconomic Theory, Alan Blinder's book was extremely clear and understandable. His comments about Central Banking behavior make wonderful sense as he takes into account both academic and real world theaters. He was especially clairvoyant in his reasoning about why a Central Bank needs to establish credibility. A definite recommendation for those interested in the Federal Reserve and what they do.
Reviews
Nothing fancy, but a good testimony from a real central banker about how real central banking has been carried out in recent US history. It is much less glamorous than all the theories, models and arguments would have it. Logical, sensible and even-tempered, like a central banker. A small book easily read in an evening that brings a lot down to earth. Only four stars because nothing this reasonable deserves five.

The American Ballot Box in the Mid-Nineteenth Century

The American Ballot Box in the Mid-Nineteenth Century
Richard Franklin Bensel | 2004-04-26 00:00:00 | Cambridge University Press | 320 | Social Sciences
Unlike modern elections, the American polling place of the mid-nineteenth century was thoroughly endowed with symbolic meaning for individuals who otherwise would not have had the least interest in politics. This made the polls exciting and encouraged men to vote at far higher rates than they do today. Men who approached a polling place were met by agents of the major political parties. They treated the voters with whiskey, gave them petty bribes, and urged that they should be loyal to their ethnic and religious communities. As reported in the eyewitness accounts of ordinary voters, the polls were almost always crowded, noisy, and often, violent.

Cycling Europe: Budget Biking Touring in the Old World (The Active Travel Series)

Cycling Europe: Budget Biking Touring in the Old World (The Active Travel Series)
Nadine Slavinsky | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Motorbooks International | 256 | Cycling
This up-to-date guide features all the information one needs to make a bike tour of the Old World--without spending a great deal of money. Slavinski includes intermediate and challenging rides, accurate, fully researched route descriptions, planning advice, and more.
Reviews
We have found this book quite helpful in planning our cycling trips in Europe, particularly tours of France and Germany. We cannot disagree with comments from the other reviewers. There are indeed some points of misinformation, and we have found better routes in several instances. Cycling the "route du vin" in Alsace was a special treat, yet never mentioned as an option; another route in Germany easily leads onto the Autobahn if not careful! Nonetheless, this book was indispensible in planning our European tours.

The few available cycling guides should be viewed as helpful references/starting points for planning a cycling tour. It is important to be flexible, and open to the many options available - that is half the fun of self-supported bicycle touring! With the caveats above, we do recommend this book.
Reviews
The problem with this book, as well as many others that descirbe biking in Europe, is that is doesn't truly focus on how you could do it. Rather, it tells you how they did it. They provide very basic information on trip planning and focus mainly on where they went. It's good for people searching for a preset tour with maps, but it's not for people who wish to make their own trip. The book breifly talks about accomadations, transport, and problems one may encounter. I would apperciate some specific information on which airline does the best job of transporting bikes and which hostels welcome bikers.
Reviews
There was a famous competition in the UK once of misleading tips for foreign tourists. Try the echo in the Reading Room of the British Museum, double yellow lines by the side of the road mean double parking allowed etc. This books perpetrates another, which if you followed it would cause intense irritation. The statement that British shops (repeated more than once) are closed all weekend. Simply rubbish. You can food shop anywhere all day Saturday, and on part of Sunday, in all but the smallest villages, and even some of them. Its recommendation on maps is poor. I could go on with other inaccuracies. The book is not all bad, but a guide to cycling Europe? No way.

A plea to all guide book writers - get your facts carefully checked by a well-informed native.

Inhibitory Regulation of Excitatory Neurotransmission (Results and Problems in Cell Differentiation)

Inhibitory Regulation of Excitatory Neurotransmission (Results and Problems in Cell Differentiation)
Mark G. Darlison | 2007-11-16 00:00:00 | Springer | 248 | Internal Medicine

Within the central and peripheral nervous systems of animals, including man, inhibition is crucial to counterbalance excitatory neurotransmission, which is predominantly mediated by glutamate and its receptors. Although, particularly in brain, much of this inhibition is provided by classical post-synaptic GABAA receptors, many other proteins and mechanisms regulate excitation. These exist both to "fine tune" neurotransmission and to prevent overexcitation that could lead to conditions such as epilepsy and excitotoxicity, which can result in cell death. This book reviews aspects of GABAA receptor function, as well as the properties of a variety of other important inhibitory proteins, such as GABAC receptors, G-protein coupled receptors (specifically, GABAB receptors, metabotropic glutamate receptors and neuropeptide receptors), glycine receptors, GABA transporters and potassium channels. In addition, the consequences of mutations that disrupt the regulation of excitatory neurotransmission, and efforts to target the GABAergic system for therapeutic benefit, are discussed.

Oceanic Migration: Paths, Sequence, Timing and Range of Prehistoric Migration in the Pacific and Indian Oceans

Oceanic Migration: Paths, Sequence, Timing and Range of Prehistoric Migration in the Pacific and Indian Oceans
Charles E.M. Pearce, F. M. Pearce | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | Springer | 438 | History
Oceanic Migration studies the prehistoric peopling of the Pacific. It uses science and mathematics to expand the research base of Pacific prehistory and casts new light on this final human expansion. It explores the fundamental roles of oceanography and of global climate change in determining the paths, sequence, timing and range of Spice Island-based maritime migrations ranging across a quarter of the globe. The book is of interest to Pacific prehistorians, oceanographers and American anthropologists concerned with the diffusionist debate. For oceanographers it presents the new idea of the role of the West Pacific Warm Pool and of three of its four major currents in determining the evolution of voyaging in two oceans. For diffusionists it provides new chronological and technological contexts in which the issue of diffusionism needs to be reconsidered. For prehistorians it creates a paradigmatic shift by establishing a new time depth and mechanism for Polynesian exploration, offers a new view of voyaging and exploration strategies and of economic imperatives and adds a new dimension to the debate on Polynesian origins.

Among the Prophets: Language, Image and Structure in the Prophetic Writings (Jsot Supplement Series)

Among the Prophets: Language, Image and Structure in the Prophetic Writings (Jsot Supplement Series)
Philip R. Davies | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | Sheffield | 252 | Philosophy
Prophetic symbolism is one of the key topics of this volume. On Isaiah, John F.A. Sawyer finds radical images of Yahweh, Kenneth T. Aitken looks at the metamorphosis of the key motif of hearing, seeing and understanding, Michael L. Barre examines lions and birds in 31.4-5, and Marvin A. Sweeney re-examines vmes(tm)s in 8.6. The imagery of Ezekiel is explored by Leslie C. Allen (the 'Death Valley' vision) and M.G. Swanepoel (Ezekiel 16 and female images of Israel), and Alan Cooper and Athalya Brenner write on the book of Jonah. Two essays of more general scope deal with the search for unity in Isaiah (David Carr) and the redactional shape of Nahum 1 (James Nogalski). An attractive and stimulating volume which reflects the liveliness of current research on the prophetic literature.

Breaking the Cycles of Hatred: Memory, Law, and Repair

Breaking the Cycles of Hatred: Memory, Law, and Repair
Martha Minow | 2002-10-28 00:00:00 | Princeton University Press | 264 | Jurisprudence
Violence so often begets violence. Victims respond with revenge only to inspire seemingly endless cycles of retaliation. Conflicts between nations, between ethnic groups, between strangers, and between family members differ in so many ways and yet often share this dynamic. In this powerful and timely book Martha Minow and others ask: What explains these cycles and what can break them? What lessons can we draw from one form of violence that might be relevant to other forms? Can legal responses to violence provide accountability but avoid escalating vengeance? If so, what kinds of legal institutions and practices can make a difference? What kinds risk failure?

Breaking the Cycles of Hatred represents a unique blend of political and legal theory, one that focuses on the double-edged role of memory in fueling cycles of hatred and maintaining justice and personal integrity. Its centerpiece comprises three penetrating essays by Minow. She argues that innovative legal institutions and practices, such as truth commissions and civil damage actions against groups that sponsor hate, often work better than more conventional criminal proceedings and sanctions. Minow also calls for more sustained attention to the underlying dynamics of violence, the connections between intergroup and intrafamily violence, and the wide range of possible responses to violence beyond criminalization.

A vibrant set of freestanding responses from experts in political theory, psychology, history, and law examines past and potential avenues for breaking cycles of violence and for deepening our capacity to avoid becoming what we hate. The topics include hate crimes and hate-crimes legislation, child sexual abuse and the statute of limitations, and the American kidnapping and internment of Japanese Latin Americans during World War II. Commissioned by Nancy Rosenblum, the essays are by Ross E. Cheit, Marc Galanter, Fredrick C. Harris, Judith Lewis Herman, Carey Jaros, Frederick M. Lawrence, Austin Sarat, Ayelet Shachar, Eric K. Yamamoto, and Iris Marion Young.

Theory Of Regular Economies (Series on Mathematical Economics and Game Theory)
Ryo Nagata | 2004-07-31 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 236 | Economics
This book presents a comprehensive treatment of the theory of regular economies, which is one of the most advanced topics in modern general equilibrium theory, emphasizing the basic ideas, the tools and the important applications. Although many notions and tools of differential topology are required to understand the theory, the author chooses a minimum of them and heuristically arranges them; that is, instead of lumping together all the necessary mathematics, the author puts at the beginning of each chapter the minimum mathematics required for the economic analysis of the chapter, so that the reader will not only save much effort on the mathematics but also directly understand how successfully the mathematics is used for the economic issues.

Diablo: Scales of the Serpent
Richard A. Knaak | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | Pocket Star | 336 | Fiction
Since the beginning of time, the angelic forces of the High Heavens and the demonic hordes of the Burning Hells have been locked in the Eternal Conflict for the fate of all Creation. That struggle has now spilled over into Sanctuary -- the world of men. Determined to win mankind over to their respective causes, the forces of good and evil wage a secret war for mortal souls. This is the tale of the Sin War -- the conflict that would forever change the destiny of man.

Bent on destroying the evil cult of the Triune, Uldyssian does not yet suspect that Inarius -- secret Prophet of the Cathedral of Light -- has been subtly aiding his quest. Obsessed with restoring Sanctuary to its former glory, Inarius has been playing Uldyssian against the two great religions in a reckless attempt to topple them both. But another player has slipped back into the equation. The demon Lilith, once Inarius's lover, seeks to use Uldyssian as her own pawn in a scheme to turn humans into an army of naphalem -- godlike beings, more powerful than any angel or demon, who could overturn all Creation and elevate Lilith to supreme being.

Getting off to a good start
From what I have read thus far, I like the author's style. I showed my copy to a JAVA programmer and he felt that the table of contents covers an excellent introduction to JAVA. It was recommended that I take advantage of one of the several IDE available on the web. I did and together with the book, I have an excellent learning environment.

Five star for content - 0 stars for quality control - average rounded down to 2.

I bought this book last November and am just now getting around to using it.

Up through hour 12 and very happy with the material, the way it is presented, the workshops.

Highlighting, taking notes, flagging pages,,. all good

All is fine until page 310--- where 319 should be I find page 271 again ,,,, up to 318 again and then jump to 367. Missing 319 through 366.

First, I don't know if I can get a refund after 10 months and second - I don't want to give up all my annotations from the first 12 hours if they do let me return it. :-( Unhappy either way.

So - if you buy this book (Five Stars) make sure you check the pagination throughout when it arrives.

Best Java Book For Beginners!
This book has everything a beginner needs to learn to program with Java. The explanations are clear with examples. Teaches everything step by step. Recommend it to everyone who's a beginner and having trouble programming with Java. Probably the best book out there.

User review
Great,,.
It's great! I was able to (in everyone else's opinion) master Java within 2 days!

User review
Excellent book, even for XP users
I am just finishing this book, and it is one of the best programming books I have ever worked with. The author has a sense of humor that completely complements the work. I usually find humor in a programming book cheesy and distracting, but Cadenhead's humor is informative and fun at heart, and makes the work go more quickly and make more sense.

The DOS issues mentioned in another review are not a problem with this book. Learning any powerful programming language these days does involve understanding a little bit of what's going on under the hood in your computer. That learning curve exists in almost any language, and each book needs to include it. There is extensive coverage in this book for the difficulties that may arise in this stage, and help for getting around those issues. Once you get your particular system set up properly, you will enjoy playing with the language. There is also extensive online support for these issues.

I am also sticking with the Sams 24 Hour series for other languages, because they are very well done for a wide range of readers.

Toward a Science of Consciousness: The First Tucson Discussions and Debates (Complex Adaptive Systems)

Toward a Science of Consciousness: The First Tucson Discussions and Debates (Complex Adaptive Systems)
Stuart R. Hameroff,Alfred W. Kaszniak,Alwyn C. Scott | 1996-03-26 00:00:00 | The MIT Press | 832 | Mental Health
"The exploration of consciousness is one of the most challenging problems of the human mind, where bold new concepts are required. This book provides the reader with exciting new ideas from a variety of scientific disciplines and thus serves as a highly useful basis for future research in this field." -- Hermann P. J. Haken, Professor of Theoretical Physics and Synergetics, University of Stuttgart

Scientists and philosophers are focusing more intensely than ever on the nature of our human experience, resulting in a newly coalescing field of Consciousness Studies that has become a worldwide and highly interdisciplinary phenomenon. Toward a Science of Consciousness marks the first major gathering -- a landmark event -- devoted entirely to unlocking the mysteries of consciousness. It explores the whole spectrum of approaches from philosophy of mind and dream research, to neuropsychology, pharmacology, and molecular dynamics, to neural networks, phenomenological accounts, and even the physics of reality. The aim is to lay a sound scientific foundation for future research while also reaching consensus on many scattered areas of inquiry. Following an overview, fifty-five chapters are divided into ten sections: philosophy, cognitive science, medicine/pathology, neurology, neural networks, subneural biology, quantum theory, non-locality in space and time, hierarchical organization, and phenomenology. In addition to the editors, who are, respectively, an anesthesiologist, a psychologist, and an applied mathematician, contributors include such luminaries as David Chalmers, Michael Conrad, Avshalom Elitzur, Owen Flanagan, David Galin, John Kihlstrom, Christof Koch, Benjamin Libet, Roger Penrose, Karl Pribram, Gary Schwartz, Petra Stoerig, John Taylor, Andrew Weil, Fred Wolf, and many others.
Reviews
This book is a landmark in consciousness studies. If anyone doubts that consciousness studies are multidiciplinary almost by definition, let him read this book. There is a little bit of everything for everyone. Quantum physics, neurology, cognitive science, psychology, plain out parapsychology. One cannot agree with everything one reads, but as a survey of the field as it stood in the 90's this is a jewel. A must for people interested in the study of consciousness, scientific or otherwise. I generalize these comments to the other 2 books, Towards a Science of Consciouness 2 and 3. This one is the most complete, however, and one can do without them.

Advances in Physical Organic Chemistry. Volume 15

Advances in Physical Organic Chemistry. Volume 15
D. Bethell | 1978-02-11 00:00:00 | Academic Press | 352 | Organic
This is a well-established series for the publication of authoritative reviews on the methods and results of the application of quantitative physical and mathematical methods to organic chemistry. The authors are acknowledged experts in their particular fields, and the contributions give the reader an up-to-date account of different aspects of physical organic chemistry. In the pursuit of challenging problems of organic chemistry, the series encourages forward-looking reviews on a variety of topics, not all of which may as yet conform to conventional notions of the scope of the field.
Reviews
I recently completed my honors project for Dr. Tidwell at University of Toronto, and took two years worth of his organic chemistry courses... I have to say that they were the most enjoyable and understandable courses I have taken in my life, in fact I completed these courses in the top percentile of my class with very little studying on my own- I learned everything in his lectures! He wrote the authoritative book on Ketene chemistry, which all the researchers in that field use, and I used on my honors project. I think that he has a very good skill in presenting concepts in physical organic chemistry that has been honed with hard work over many years, and is also due to an obvious love of chemistry. I can't tell you about this book because I haven't read it yet, but when I can get the money (a little pricey for your average canadian graduate student...), I will hopefully complete my review.

First Look at Rigorous Probability Theory

First Look at Rigorous Probability Theory
First Look at Rigorous Probability Theory | 2006-01-01 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 238 | Mathematics
This textbook is an introduction to probability theory using measure theory. It is designed for graduate students in a variety of fields (mathematics, statistics, economics, management, finance, computer science, and engineering) who require a working knowledge of probability theory that is mathematically precise, but without excessive technicalities. The text provides complete proofs of all the essential introductory results. Nevertheless, the treatment is focused and accessible, with the measure theory and mathematical details presented in terms of intuitive probabilistic concepts, rather than as separate, imposing subjects. In this new edition, many exercises and small additional topics have been added and existing ones expanded. The text strikes an appropriate balance, rigorously developing probability theory while avoiding unnecessary detail.

Neural Network Design (Electrical Engineering)

Neural Network Design (Electrical Engineering)
Martin T. Hagan,Howard B. Demuth,Mark H. Beale | 1995-12-29 00:00:00 | PWS Pub. Co. | 736 | Certification Central
This guide to neural networks includes worked problems in each chapter, and supporting software demonstrations. The authors of this work also developed the neural networks toolbox (for MathWorks) and the fuzzy systems toolbox (for PWS).
Reviews
I had the pleasure of not only using this text for my neural network design graduate course, but also taking the course from one of the authors (Professor Howard Demuth).

This book is extremely well written. Being a PhD student in computer engineering, I have read many math books and advanced engineering books. Most of these books are informative, but difficult to read. Much of this is understandable because the topics are complex and explaining them in a very simple manner requires significantly more time. More diagrams, more examples, rewriting paragraphs to improve clarity, etc. This book tackles all of those issues perfectly!

Right now I am reading one of the other "classic" math texts and while I am already familiar with the topic, the reading is extremely difficult. Due to this, I recalled how easy it was to understand the neural network design text and wished my current author wrote more like them.

If you are interested in machine learning, in particular, neural networks, this is a superb book to get you started. Even the most complex mathematical topics in linear algebra and network design are explained so almost anyone can understand. Even if you do not have a strong mathematical background, you'll be able to understand almost all of the math.

Excellent book - (5/5 stars)!
Reviews
Very useful book to have if you plan to use NN (specially in matlab environment). The theory is very well covered and explained, along with graphical examples. The book lacks however, more insight into how to implemen NN in real world problems (for that, I would suggest seeing Fundamentals of NN by Laurene V. Fausett).
Reviews
I knew the very poor Matlab Neural Network Toolbox User's Guide by the same authors and I was kind of expecting the same, and boy was I wrong!

This book is simply brilliant, a miracle of pedagogy. It is intended for undergrad classes, but it is so clear that graduate students will benefit enormously from reading it before any other material. Plainly put, this book makes you UNDERSTAND this difficult topic, more than any other book that I know of (Zurada, Smith, Hassoun, Haykin, Duda-Hart, Caudill, etc)

A selection of worked out problems are included at the end of each chapter, a practice that is highly beneficial but alas too rare in books of the kind.

I very much appreciated the very clear exposition of backpropagation, and optimization methods such as Levenberg-Marquardt.

A note to Matlab users: funky demos are available for free and illustrate the main points of the book.
Reviews
I have been studying neural network design for almost 30 years now and I have never found a more enchanting text book than this one. From day one I could not put it down. In fact, I bought a copy for each member of my extended family. Beale is brilliant in the way he demostrates the design and capability of neural network systems. No one has ever captured the public's imagination and heart the way he does in this compelling work. He has taken the study of neural networks to the next level. Hence, the world will be a better place. H2BurBabes4Ever.
Reviews
I purchased this book while looking for an appropriate textbook for use in my class on neural networks. This book is excellent for both beginners and experts. It is a rare book in that it demonstrates complex mathematical manipulations and principles (that are difficult to grasp and visualize - and explain) using examples. The review on mathematical principles is very useful. The book makes it easier to teach the subject now. Given the way everything is presented, this book will also help those that want to code their own networks. I recommend this book to everyone.

Introduction to the Principles of Medical Imaging

Introduction to the Principles of Medical Imaging
Chris Guy,Dominic Ffytche | 1900-01-01 00:00:00 | World Scientific Publishing Company | 420 | Engineering
The introduction of X-ray computed tomography (CT) 25 years ago revolutionized medical imaging; X-ray CT itself provided the first clear cross-sectional images of the human body, with substantial contrast between different types of soft tissue. The enduring legacy of CT is, however, the spur that it gave to the subsequent introduction of tomographic imaging techniques into diagnostic nuclear medicine and the extraordinarily rapid development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) over this period.

This book is a non-mathematical introduction to the principles underlying modern medical imaging, taking tomography as its central theme. The first three chapters cover the general principles of tomography, a survey of the atomic and nuclear physics which underpins modern imaging, and a review of the key issues involved in radiation protection. The subsequent chapters deal in turn with X-ray radiography, gamma imaging, MRI and ultrasound. The clinical role of diagnostic imaging is illustrated in the final chapter through the use of fictional clinical histories. Three appendices provide a more mathematical background to the tomographic method, the principles of mathematical Fourier methods, and the mathematics of MRI.

This revised edition includes new introductory sections on the relevant physics of molecules in general, and water, in particular. Every chapter now has a table of key points with cross-references to other sections. Several figures have also been revised.

The book is intended to provide a broad introductory background to tomographic imaging for two groups of readers: the physics or engineering undergraduate thinking of specializing in medical physics, and the medical student or clinician using tomographic techniques in research and clinical practice.

Wireless Sensor Networks : An Information Processing Approach (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Networking)

Wireless Sensor Networks : An Information Processing Approach (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Networking)
| 2004-07-06 00:00:00 | | 0 | Wireless Network

Designing, implementing, and operating a wireless sensor network involves a wide range of disciplines and many application-specific constraints. To make sense of and take advantage of these systems, a holistic approach is needed-and this is precisely what Wireless Sensor Networks delivers.

Inside, two eminent researchers review the diverse technologies and techniques that interact in today's wireless sensor networks. At every step, they are guided by the high-level information-processing tasks that determine how these networks are architected and administered. Zhao and Guibas begin with the canonical problem of localizing and tracking moving objects, then systematically examine the many fundamental sensor network issues that spring from it, including network discovery, service establishment, data routing and aggregation, query processing, programming models, and system organization. The understanding gained as a result-how different layers support the needs of different applications, and how a wireless sensor network should be built to optimize performance and economy-is sure to endure as individual component technologies come and go.

·Written for practitioners, researchers, and students and relevant to all application areas, including environmental monitoring, industrial sensing and diagnostics, automotive and transportation, security and surveillance, military and battlefield uses, and large-scale infrastructural maintenance.
·Skillfully integrates the many disciplines at work in wireless sensor network design: signal processing and estimation, communication theory and protocols, distributed algorithms and databases, probabilistic reasoning, energy-aware computing, design methodologies, evaluation metrics, and more.
·Demonstrates how querying, data routing, and network self-organization can support high-level information-processing tasks.

Radiation Protection: A Guide for Scientists, Regulators and Physicians

Radiation Protection: A Guide for Scientists, Regulators and Physicians
Jacob Shapiro | 2002-06-15 00:00:00 | Harvard University Press | 688 | Engineering
This highly successful manual has served for nearly three decades as the definitive guide to the safe use of radioactive materials. Completely revised and updated, the fourth edition presents a new dimension by adding coverage of nonionizing radiation, and is thus concerned with the entire field of radiation protection. The author takes the novel approach of introducing the whole range of energies possessed by particles and electromagnetic waves at the beginning of the text, thus integrating coverage of ionizing and nonionizing radiation rather than considering them as two separate disciplines. He goes on to cover the entire spectrum of radiation sources, including radionuclides, x-ray machines, accelerators, nuclear reactors, power lines, microwave towers, and cellular phones. With its expanded coverage, including a broader focus on public health issues, this new volume will serve as an important training and reference resource, not only for research scientists, physicians, and engineers, but for regulatory officials, attorneys, engineers, and environmental health and safety professionals. The breadth of citations alone makes this resource invaluable.
Reviews
I am a Medical Physicist and I found this book to be an excellent review and have recommended it to our Cheif Radiology Resident for the Radioloy Residents for Physics review. This would be an excellent addition to any Health, Medical Physicists resources as well as the mentioned Scientist, Regulators and Physicians of the title.

This is a nice light read but I wish it had more or it had been cheaper. In these ways, I would have been just as happy reading this information in a magazine article (if I read magazines.)
Reviews
Bob Flaws is a prolific writer in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In this book he imparts the wisdom of a Chinese emperor on longevity, interpreting how it can be adapted to contemporary life. This wisdom includes: appreciating different body needs for different stages of our life from childhood to old age; a regular lifestyle; modifying one's eating habits to include more grains, fruit and vegetables, and less meat; moderation in sex; ensuring sufficient but not too much rest and relaxation; self-massage exercises; good types of exercise; and the benefits of qi gong. The book is interspersed with excerpts from classical TCM literature as well as anecdotes from Bob Flaws personal clinical experience as an acupuncturist and herbalist. Readers new to TCM may find some of the terminology in the book a bit strange, but all readers will undoubtedly want to make some changes to their lifestyle after reading it. A few suggestions on further reading would have brought this up to five stars.

The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Shadow Souls
L. J. Smith | 2010-01-01 00:00:00 | HarperTeen | 608 | Fiction Other
LJ is a great writer, who's talent has grown with her many published works, and Shadow Souls was no exception. The description is so vivid, that you can imagine every little detail at any given time. Her style is also really unique and fluid. One thing I am sure of, however is that the editors of this book need to be fired immediately. I found so many errors and even a typo, which probably wouldn't bother the average reader, but as a writer, it caught me off gaurd.

I was told that the ending would throw me for a loop, which it did. Never saw that coming. But I feel that the problem could be fixed so easily that it isn't really a big deal.

A must read for fans of the series, especially if you are on Team Damon with me, Shadow Souls is sure to please. If you haven't read this series, or any by LJ Smith, I advise that you do immediately. In fact, I demand it!
